If you are born and bred in the UK (or have lived here for a long time) you sort of get used to the weather (although it Tania Houston doesn’t stop us moaning about it). But if you are a visitor it must be quite hard to understand how we tolerate it. We hosted a student - Tsuyoshi - from the south of Japan this summer, and he was actually quite surprised to hear that this is summer; he thought perhaps it was another time of year! But when the sun does come out – as it did on a day trip - it’s simply glorious. Not so hot you have to find shade or keep retreating to air conditioned buildings, and everywhere so picturesque and green. So I’d say our good days are some of the best in the world, just not quite enough of them. Our student had fun practising his pronunciation particularly with some of our town names. Bournemouth took many attempts to get right and his first attempt at Beaulieu had us in stitches (he guessed it would be something like Bowleeoo). And when I tried to explain the identical suffixes but different ways of saying ‘though, thorough, bough, cough and rough’ I think he was on the verge of giving up and going home. Despite our tricky language and unreliable weather, he really enjoyed England. And showing the best of the area to someone else really makes you appreciate what we have in Hampshire and Dorset. Two great days out this month are The Romsey Show (12th, page 8) and The Hiltingbury Extravaganza (20th, page 12). Just don’t forget your woolly jumper, brolly...and suncream. You could need all in the same day. Until next time.

INTERVIEW
Mika After a worldwide hit with ‘Grace Kelly’ back in 2007, Mika is back with a brand new album. Lucy Ambache caught up with him on the Evening Breeze and talked about everything from speed dating to opera.
Great to have you back. You have a voice that you recognise straight away. It’s that high singing thing that you do. How did that come about? Did you study operatics? I did! I studied classical music and I went to music college - I wanted to be an opera singer. So when you sing classically, you aren’t afraid of using all those different parts of your voice. But also I write at the piano but I’m a really simplistic piano player - I kind of use it as a percussion instrument. So to tell a story I had to use my voice - and that’s why I use those different areas. So the new album is called ‘No Place In Heaven’. What’s happening? Are we all going to hell here? No! But you know what they say. Paradise is good for the view. Is there room for you in heaven? The company’s better in hell! But why is it called that!
Mika’s new single is ‘All She Wants’ and is out on the 4th of September. 6
When you’re thirty years old, you have to take hold of your life. But before you’re thirty, things are kind of written for you - you go to school and then you work. But from the age of thirty everyone looks at you and goes “now it’s time for you to completely write it yourself”. Nothing’s decided for you and you need to work out what kind
of adult you hope and wish to become in the future. But the title is just a provocation. If there’s no place in heaven, it forces me to take account for my present life and to live every day as if it’s my last. It’s a coming of age thing, in a way. Tell us about the single ‘Talk About You’ You know when everyone says “oh it’s a really happy love song”. It doesn’t exist. There are no happy love songs. They’re always complicated. Love is complicated. Talk About You is joyful because it’s about a crush! Have you ever done speed dating? No. Well. Unintentionally. Because you think you’re going out on a normal date, but it’s really short - and people just leave! But normal speaking - I think it would be a disaster. Are you single? No I’m not so it’s not really on the cards. I had to go speed dating once with a couple of male friends and they met women they really liked. And the last scene of the night is me sitting between them and they are with their new women. How long did those relationships last? Are we talking months, weeks or hours? Probably the latter!

MOTORING
BMW X1 By James Baggott
What is it? This is the totally revised BMW X1. Gone are the weird looks of the last model and in comes a fresh, chunky design that makes it look like a shrink-wrapped X5, but in a good way. One in 10 BMWs sold was an X1 at the height of its success and it was continually in the top three most popular cars sold by the manufacturer, so this new model has a lot to live up to. Aimed at “young, sporty” buyers, the maker believes this is a lifestyle vehicle that can be used every day.
What’s under the bonnet? There is one petrol engine and three diesel options. The former xDrive20i has 190bhp, 280Nm of torque and can hit 62mph in 7.4 seconds. Diesels come in 18d, 20d and 25d variants. The sDrive18d is front wheel drive only, the latter two four-wheel drive like the petrol. We’d pick the £30,630-priced xDrive20d, though. Why? Well it comes with four-wheel drive, is £6k cheaper than the top-of-the-range model and still performs well.
What’s the spec like? Standard equipment is plentiful. Navigation, DAB radio, 40:20:40 split rear seat (with handy buttons to fold them flat from the boot), alloys and an automatic opening and closing boot that you can 18
operate with a wave of your foot, are all included. As you move up the range, larger alloys, different trims and LED headlights are added, while the M Sport adds a smart styling pack too. On the options list is a heated steering wheel, Harman Kardon speakers and a head-up display, plus lots more.
What’s it like to drive? Frankly, quite brilliant. For what is essentially a small SUV it belies its size on the road. Bumps are soaked up beautifully and the ride is plush. The high seating position is excellent and commanding and the diesel engine and automatic gearbox work seamlessly. It’s a very competent package and feels decidedly premium. BMW has worked hard on the chassis for this new X1 and it shows.
Any rivals? Plenty. Direct rivals come in the shape of the Audi Q3 and Mercedes GLA, although we’d argue not quite as good looking as the Beemer. But then cast your net further afield and you could include the Nissan Qashqai, Kia Sportage and recently launched Renault Kadjar in the same bracket. Those latter options lack the cache of the BMW’s premium badge, but offer considerably better value for money.
The verdict We loved the BMW X1. The last one passed us by somewhat – we felt the looks were strange and out of proportion, and it seemed to lack the style we’d come to expect from BMW. This new model is much better, though. The chunky looks make it really stand out on the road – even if it does look like a miniature X5 (but that’s no bad thing) – and the interior is a lovely place to spend time. As you’d expect it feels premium, rides beautifully and has an impressive amount of standard kit. We’d go as far to say that if you’re looking for a premium SUV with diminutive dimensions, this should be at the top of your shopping list.
The Knowledge Model: BMW X1 xDrive20d Price: £30,630 Engine: 2.0-litre diesel Power: 188bhp, 400Nm Max speed: 136mph 0-62mph: 7.4 MPG: 57.6 Emissions: 128g/km

Car Traffic Control fix my garage door.co.uk Iain Betson thinks if airports were like our car parks, we’d never get on a plane.
On my return flight from holiday I spent time, prior to boarding, watching the preceding flights being prepared for take-off. I was struck by the care the ground and air crew took when moving the aircraft from the jet bridge to the taxiway. Each person knew their job and checks were made prior to each manoeuvre. I particularly noted that an aircraft, ready to push back from the gate, was not allowed to start its engines as a second aircraft was taxiing immediately behind it. When it was clear, the tractor carefully pushed the jet backwards onto the taxiway. Only then did the dispatcher give the signal for the pilot to start up. I contrast this with the actions of drivers in multistorey car parks. Most have speed limit signs and bumps, and give way markings on the road. Yet the driving attitude of more than a few motorists is just breathtaking: speeding around corners, narrowly missing pedestrians or not checking properly when reversing out of spaces. If a pilot acted in a similar fashion, throwing the jet out of the gate and speeding along the taxiway, we would surely shout about airline safety. Contrasting this with the free-for-all car parks and the same high potential for an accident, there really is no difference.

And Another Thing... by Tom Hughes Last Tuesday morning I drew back our bedroom curtains and watched bleary-eyed as the autumn wind sent plastic bottles, newspapers and Dominos pizza cartons swirling into my neighbour’s gardens. Cursing the litter louts who had blighted The Avenue, I turned to my slumbering beloved and said, “Sarah, what’s with all the rubbish outside? Should I ring the council?” From under the duvet came the muffled reply, “What day is it?” “Tuesday. Why?” My Dearly Beloved suddenly sprang from the matrimonial divan and stood frozen on our 80% wool twist, deep in thought. “Yesterday was a bank holiday... Tom, is Mrs Murphy out the front?” “Yes, why?” The look of horror on Sarah’s face said it all. Clasping our hands to our faces, we both screamed together: “The bins!” Time was of the absolute essence. “Tom, what are you doing?” “I’m er, looking for my other sock.” “Never mind socks, just go down as you are! There isn’t time!” “In my jimjams? Why can’t I get 24
dressed?” “Because... you are a man, you don’t care what people think. Now go! And don’t wake your little nephew.” Heartened that my sartorial insouciance gave me licence to roam the streets half naked, I leapt quietly down the stairs, through the kitchen and out onto the patio where lay the dreaded recycling receptacles. Dropping the waste food bin (eugh) onto the cardboard bin, I stuck the one for plastic bottles under my arm and ran towards the front door. I made it just in time to see the pink recycling lorry meandering away down The Avenue. Oh well, maybe we could just wait until next week? The bang from the window above told me that wasn’t an option.
and out of the open-sided van. Eventually, I caught up with the happy band of council employees at the end of The Avenue. Triumphantly, I dropped my containers at one of the Recycle Operative’s feet. Ignoring me completely, he joined up with his pals as the lorry trundled out of my road. And there I remained, standing in my pyjamas on the corner of The Avenue and Harrington Drive, smelling of stale milk. Undeterred I pressed on, managing to barge my way past the lorry to dump my bins at the feet of a tattooed Hell’s Angel in a hi-viz vest. “Can you empty my bins, please?”
Along the road I limped, hitching the boxes up onto my shoulders as bottles and tins clattered down around me.
Giant Haystack’s surly half-brother gave me a stare and then with his massive paw began lifting up my receptacles. Thank goodness for that, now I could end this nightmare, go home and tweezer the gravel out of my feet. Wrong!
“Mr Hughes? You’ve dropped something!”
The black bin crashed an inch away from my foot, un-emptied.
Mrs Murphy, aggressively sweeping her designated part of the pavement, shook her head as I staggered on, cursing my burden of domestic detritus.
“What’s the matter?”
Up ahead, a swarm of tattooed bin men swung plastic boxes in
“There’s a tin can in your cardboard box bin.” “Did you know that in China, a new coal-fired power station comes online every six months, so I don’t think one tin…”
“Sorry sir, I can’t take your bin now, I’ve put a sticker on it.”
First Choice
I looked down. On the side of the container was now stuck a bright yellow note – “Incorrectly Packed Bin”. Giant Haystacks shrugged his shoulders as he and his lorry rolled down Harrington Drive.
Rubbish Clearance Specialists
The sky darkened, commuters stared. There was nothing left for it. The walk of shame awaited. I carried my still-full bins back home. Mrs Murphy shook her head as Sarah opened the door, took one look at my burden, then turned on her heel and went back inside. We didn’t speak until lunch. Billy, my little nephew, was sat at the kitchen table mashing his eggy soldiers as I shuffled mournfully towards the patio. “Uncle Tom, when I grow up I want to be a bin man.” “Why on earth would you want to be a bin man?” “Well, you get to wear a cool hi-viz jacket, you get a good pension, and you only have to work one day a week....”

My, how you’ve grown! Will Bellows launched his business in 2004. Initially it was just Will on his own, but when the business started to grow through repeat calls and word of mouth, he relaunched Will Bellows as Home Computer Help. Eleven years later he has six employees with two new technicians starting soon. In 2004 technology at home was in its infancy. Broadband had just started to be widely available and affordable; tablets and smartphones were unheard of. But it’s difficult to live without some sort of computer now and for those not online – or online but struggling – it can be really frustrating. For Will and his team, getting the elderly online for the first time is something they love doing. Hearing from happy customers when they are able to order home deliveries during winter and connecting with family members is a very satisfying part of the job. From new users to family networks and home businesses, Will and the team are here to help.

What is a Dental Implant? a dental implant is an artificial replacement for a tooth root, usually made from titanium. there are many different implant systems available and when competently used they all deliver a highly reliable form of treatment. the main aim during the placement of any implant is to achieve immediate close contact with the surrounding bone. over time further growth of bone onto the implant surface enhances the stability of the implant. Frequently AskeD questIons Will I be able to eat what I like afterwards? Once completed, patients should be able to eat a normal, healthy diet with little or no difficulty. What Costs are involved in implant treatment? The cost can vary, depending on the degree and extent of treatment required. The full cost is therefore explained and confirmed in a written treatment plan from your implant dentist.
How long will it take? Implant treatment usually requires a number of appointments over a period of months. In some cases, however, implant work can be completed in a much shorter period. How long will it last? Once treatment s completed a regular routine of dental hygiene and regular check-ups should ensure that implants last for many years. Am I too old for implant treatment? There is no upper age limit for patients to undergo implant treatment, provided they continue to enjoy reasonably good health. Is the treatment painful? Patients are often surprised at how little discomfort they experience during and after implant procedures.

BEAUTY
Tresses That Impress By Kate Duggan Whether long, short or inbetween, afro, curly, wavy or straight, our hair is one of the first things people notice about us. The right style can detract from imperfections, and tells the world a little something about our personality. It can make us more self-assured; more confident in the workplace and social situations. And, of course, it’s not just about the cut; having the right tools in your arsenal at home can make all the difference.
Aveda Be Curly Co-Wash
I have a confession – until recently I didn’t own a hairbrush. I just used my daughter’s, which is shaped like Hello Kitty, but does the job. Thankfully, now I am the proud owner of a Wet Brush, the US’s bestselling hairbrush, which detangles wet or dry hair like a dream. My daughter is also a fan, as it doesn’t pull as much, which is making mornings rather more pleasant. The Wet Brush costs £11.99 from www. cultbeauty.co.uk. If you only make one change to your haircare regime, swap to a gentler, more natural shampoo. Most high street shampoos contain Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, which can strip your hair of essential oils, leaving it limp and lifeless. A gentler alternative is Green People Quinoa & Artichoke Shampoo and Conditioner (£9.95 each), which are designed to nourish and protect damaged hair. The quinoa and artichoke leaf work together to condition, minimise
frizz, strengthen and protect from UV radiation. Curly and coily haired women have cause to celebrate, with the release of Aveda Be Curly Co-Wash, £17.50, which cleanses hair, while preserving moisture and minimising frizz. The key ingredients are organic babassu oil and baobab oil. Subrina Kidd, Aveda UK’s Textured Hair Specialist, explains, “Regular cleansing shampoos can often leave hair looking and feeling dry and brittle – this low-lather, sulfate-free formula will refresh and revive the hair texture or curl pattern without removing necessary moisture. To avoid tangling, sub-divide the hair into four sections, massage the Co-Wash into each section, comb through and then rinse thoroughly.” ...Continued on page 18

Looking for a salon-style deep conditioning treatment? Try Philip Kingsley Geranium & Neroli Elasticizer, £31.50, a pre-shampoo conditioning treatment that contains neroli, geranium, lavender, rose and orange oils. The Elasticizer has been around for a few years now, and has won numerous awards and accolades. This new version looks set to be just as successful, as it leaves hair soft, bouncy and easier to style. While you can just apply it a few minutes before showering, for best results lather it on before bed. It may seem pricey, but a little goes a long way, so you’ll get a fair few weekly treatments from each jar. Intensive conditioning treatments tend to work best if you cover up with a shower cap. Of course, you could just pick up a simple see-through one for a couple of pounds, but how much more fun is this one from The Vintage Cosmetic Company?

HOME INTERIORS
Eco Home By Katherine Sorrell
A few simple measures to update your property can make an enormous difference.
Step One - Get to know your home Knowing what your home is made from, how was it originally built, and what changes have been made will make it easier to work out how you can ecoimprove it. Step Two What are its weak points? Obvious problems are rattling, draughty windows, gaps around the edges of the front door and heat escaping through the roof. To help target improvements where they are most needed, commission a professional test for air tightness and heat loss. Best done on a cold, clear winter’s night, it is non-invasive and should cost around £300. Step Three - The loft A top priority for ecoimprovement, with 300mm of quilt insulation recommended, though there should be some ventilation in the loft to avoid condensation. There is a range of insulation materials, but natural materials, such as sheep’s wool or hemp, tend to be better for older properties, as they absorb water vapour and release it. Check your 38
Seagrass is durable, breathable and environmentally friendly, while wall-towall carpeting helps prevent heat loss and draughts. Seagrass Natural, £16.26 per square metre, Urbane Living, 020 7138 38 38; www.urbaneliving.co.uk.
loft regularly for signs of condensation, mould and small animals. Step Four - Windows Windows can leak a lot of heat, especially if they are old and single glazed, and short of double glazing, draught proofing is the answer. For a longerterm solution you will need to cut in a rebate and fit either compression seals (hinged windows) or wipers (sashes). Alternatively, secondary glazing will dramatically improve both air tightness and heat loss, and there are clear panels that fix to the window frame with a magnetic strip. Alternatively, use thick, lined curtains, hung close to the wall, or timber shutters - which are more effective than double glazing. Step Five - Doors To make external doors airtight, adjust as necessary for a good fit, add draught proofing (as for windows) and cover keyholes, letter slots and cat flaps. Use a ‘sausage dog’ at the bottom or hang a long, thick curtain from a hinged rod.
Step Six - Floors Ventilation below your suspended timber floor evaporates moisture from the timber and supporting
Original timber sash windows and doors add character and appeal and, if fully functional and well maintained, can also enhance a property’s value. They do need regular maintenance, of course, and if you run into trouble try to renovate rather than replace if possible, adding draught proofing to improve energy efficiency. This elegant window has been renovated by specialists Ventrolla, 0800 0277 454; www.ventrolla.co.uk.
structures, so don’t block up external air grilles. To make the floor itself airtight, a fitted carpet with a thermal underlay is perfect, or for timber boards seal gaps around skirting boards with foam strips, silicon mastic or slivers of matching timber. If the boards have gaps, use fillets of balsa wood or lengths of string, which you can stain, glue and push into place. If you can get below the boards or are planning to lift them, consider adding insulation underneath. Step Seven - Walls It is usually straightforward to insulate modern cavity walls but older, solid walls are more of a problem. Modern systems may trap moisture and cause damp, but one option is to add timber panelling inside, leaving an air gap behind. It may also be possible to add external or internal insulation, but be sure to get impartial advice.
QUICK TIPS • Installing shutters can reduce heat loss by 60%. For efficiency, they should meet with a rebated edge and include a brush strip or rubber seal. • A thick rug helps to reduce draughts through gaps in floorboards. • Adding a pelmet to a window treatment helps to reduce draughts and stop warm air disappearing behind your curtains or blind. • Place radiators on internal walls rather than below windows, where their heat can disappear more easily.
Adding a portiere rod is a great way to insulate a draughty exterior door. Hang heavy, floorlength curtains, ensuring that there is enough stack-back space for the door to be opened easily. If possible, use an insulating lining and heavy fleece interlining – bearing in mind that the pole will need to be able to support the weight. 12mm self-closing button portiere in beeswax, from £44.10, Jim Lawrence, 01473 826685; www.jim-lawrence.co.uk.

. Convenience . Choice . Service
You’ve all seen the advertisements for ½ price kitchens, free appliances and all the extra “Bells and Whistles” some companies offer. Well don’t believe everything you see, as they say… If it’s too good to be true then it probably isn’t true!
And that’s because the installation costs they charge can almost double the price of your kitchen. We at Ashmore Kitchens, being a small independent family run business, do not make such claims, nor do we charge extortionate prices to install your kitchen. Our small team of designers and installers offer a complete design, supply and installation service at a fraction of the price of other companies. We do not compromise on quality either, all our kitchens are manufactured in the UK, using only the very best components and suppliers. CENTENARY CELEBRATIONS
Centenary Celebrations The WI Turns 100
This month marks one hundred years since the first UK Women’s Institute (WI) meeting. As the WI celebrates its centenary, we look at its history and its role today.

A Slow Start
magazine in 1919.
As the twentieth century began, few branches of the new AOS (Agricultural Organisation Society) welcomed women, and female attendees were often too afraid of ridicule to speak. Yet in Canada, the Farmer’s Institutes had inspired women to found WIs to share knowledge on farming and raising a family. The movement spread throughout Canada and to the USA, Poland and Belgium.
With WW1 over, the WI urged members to become active citizens and stand for election at local and parliamentary level. In 1921 WI member Mrs Margaret Winteringham became the first English born female MP and the second woman in Parliament.
However, in the UK, WIs weren’t established until the arrival of Madge Watt, a founder member of British Columbia’s first WI. Her speech about the vital contribution women could make to the war effort through working the land to grow food helped persuade the AOS to appoint her as founder of WIs in the UK. WIs would provide a hub for sharing knowledge about agriculture and home industries, and for social activities, but would initially focus on increasing food production to counter WW1 shortages. The first UK WI meeting was held on 16th September 1915 in Llanfair PG, and by 1918 there were 99 WIs. Soon the WI became independent from the Board of Agriculture; the National Federation of Women’s Institutes (NFWI) was formed in October 1917 and began publishing its Home and Country
44
By 1924, when Jerusalem was adopted as the WI song, there were 3,223 WIs.
World War Two to Diamond Jubilee The WI had continued to support the League of Nations, and was preparing for war once again. Lady Denman, the WI chair, became Director of the Women’s Land Army in 1938 and WI Preservation Centres played a vital role, canning produce and making jam to turn over 5,300 tons of potential waste into food for the nation. Meanwhile, the NWFI’s 1941 report on evacuees, Town Children through Country Eyes, stimulated debate about families that ultimately resulted in the family allowances after the war. Queen Mary had become President of the Sandringham WI in 1919, and in 1943 her daughter Elizabeth joined the WI too. In 1945, the WI founded Denman College. With the war over, the WI spread its wings, beginning the fifties with a national music festival.

The rule prohibiting the founding of WIs in places with populations over 4,000 was abolished, and representatives from 8,700 WIs celebrated the WI’s Golden Jubilee at a special garden party at Buckingham Palace. WIs also compiled Scrapbooks of the Countryside, now held in Local Record Office archives. The sixties ended with performances of The Brilliant and the Dark, an NFWIcommissioned musical following women’s lives throughout the centuries. In 1974 the number of WIs reached an all-time high of 9,309, just in time to celebrate the institution’s Diamond Jubilee in 1975. At the AGM that year, the NFWI confirmed its belief in ‘the principle of equality of opportunity
and of legal status for men and women’ and pledged it would continue to work towards it.
A Thoroughly Modern Institution
In the 1980s, the WI made its first appearance at the Chelsea Flower Show and launched a three year campaign to raise the profile of the WI, culminating in the WI Life and Leisure Exhibition at Olympia in 1984, opened by the Queen. There was a growing awareness of modern technology and current concerns as the WI moved into the 1990s and it campaigned with partners on several issues, including a project to promote sport as part of a healthy lifestyle. Significantly, in 1999 the WI joined with the National Farmers’ Union to hold A Women in Farming conference, with an address given by The Princess Royal, but perhaps what most overthrew its ‘jam and Jerusalem image’ was the widely reported response
of many members to the Prime Minister’s address at their Triennial General Meeting in 2000. Feeling his speech was becoming a party political broadcast, they rewarded him with a slow handclap. However, the WI is still just as committed to preserving traditional skills as it is to addressing the issues of the day, as demonstrated by their Craft Spectacular exhibition in 2000. Today, the WI is the largest voluntary women’s organisation in the UK, with 212,000 members and 6,600 WIs. It still strives to provide women with educational opportunities and campaigns on issues that affect all women and their communities, from equal pay and better midwifery to climate change and the plight of the honey bee, and over the last 100 years it has effected genuine change. So happy birthday, WI; thank you for all you have done, and long may you continue. By Alison Runham 45

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Justin Friel feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving
people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Chandlers Ford & Eastleigh areas and Justin is finding that his
approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve
done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Justin a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

HOBBIES
Fishing: The Hobby That’s Just On The Tip Of Your Tongue! “Hook, line and sinker”, “Cold fish”, “something fishy”, “fishing for compliments”: the British language is peppered with colourful expressions that celebrate our traditional love of fishing. Catching fish with a rod and line may have been a matter of survival for our ancestors, but these days it’s simply regarded as an enjoyable hobby or sport.
By Kate McLelland
Angling generates a staggering £3.5 billion a year for the economy, employing 37,000 people across the UK. In a recent report the Angling Trust estimated that over the last two years four million people have gone fishing, and numbers are growing all the time. So if you’ve longed to try your hand at angling, here’s a quick guide to get you started:
What is angling? By definition “angling” is any kind of fishing that uses an “angle” or fish-hook. Over time this activity has evolved into three different types: coarse fishing, game fishing and sea fishing. “Game fishing” is limited to catching trout and salmon, while “Sea fishing” applies to any species of fish that lives in the sea. The term “Coarse fishing” is used for catching any freshwater fish apart from salmon or trout.
What’s it like to go fishing? Angling can be a hobby, a competitive sport or the focus of a relaxing holiday (87% of respondents in a recent survey said that their main reason for fishing was for “rest and relaxation”). While some anglers enjoy getting away from it all, others prefer to go fishing with friends, or chat to fellow fishermen. Angling can also be a gateway to learning about, and caring for, the environment. 58
What does it cost? Fishing can be expensive if you allow yourself to get carried away, buying expensive equipment and accessories. However it’s possible to start out on a relatively modest budget and upgrade over time. You can buy a basic coarse fishing kit, with nets, rods and accessories, for about £60.
What do I need? You will need a rod and reel, a line, hooks, bobbers, weights, pliers, a landing net, a small tackle box, a scale and tape measure and perhaps a few lures (unless you are going to use live or prepared baits at first).
Do I need permission to go fishing? Over the age of 12 you will need a licence to fish with a rod and line for salmon, trout, freshwater fish, smelt and eel in England (except the River Tweed), in Wales and the Border Esk region of Scotland. You can buy your rod licence at Post Offices: over the phone (telephone 0844 800 5386) or online. Licences can be arranged for short periods of time or for as long as a year. An annual licence currently costs £27 (or £72 if you want to fish for salmon and sea trout). If you are unsure about taking up fishing in the long term, you should probably choose a one day or an eight day licence. However, don’t be tempted to try
fishing without a licence: if you are caught, you may face a fine of up to £2,500.
When can I fish? The “close season” for fishing is between 15th March and 15th June each year and during that period you are not allowed to fish. The coarse fishing close season applies to all rivers, streams and drains in England and Wales but not most stillwaters (although there are exceptions). Some clubs and fisheries introduce their own close season rules, so check before you fish.
Where can I fish? There are thousands of rivers, streams, lakes, piers and waterways in urban and rural locations where you can gain some experience. You will find information online at www.rodand-line.co.uk and www.fish-uk. com or join the Environment Agency’s page on Facebook to
discover waterways that have recently been cleared for fishing. If you prefer to wait till the summer you can follow www. nationalfishingmonth.co.uk: a site created to encourage more people to go fishing. Either visit their website or phone (during office hours) on 0333 577 9970.
What do I do once I’ve caught a fish? The anglers’ website www.fish-uk. com states that anglers should always return a fish to the water after it has been caught. It recommends laying the fish on an unhooking mat and gently removing the hook (barbless hooks make removal much easier). Fish should be handled as little as possible or they will lose their protective, slimy coating. Never throw one back into the water: instead you should slowly immerse the net and let the fish swim away. Many anglers

like to measure their catches, weigh them or take photographs before putting them back. Anyone who has listened to anglers’ tales about “The one that got away” will know that patience and skill plays a large part in fishing and it may be helpful to learn from an experienced angler when you are starting out: a list of instructors is available at www.fish-uk.com. As an island nation, it’s hardly surprising that fishing has become embedded in our language and our culture. Angling is growing in popularity, so don’t be a fish out of water: it won’t be long before you are well and truly hooked!

GARDENING
Leaf Litter by Pippa Greenwood www.pippagreenwood.com
Are you surrounded, engulfed and swamped with huge quantities of fallen leaves? Whether they come from trees in your own garden or from a neighbour, the deluge of leaves that falls in autumn is often enough to get level headed, tree-loving gardeners eyeing up chainsaws! Leaves that are allowed to build up can cause problems - on the lawn they smother the turf grasses, often causing patches of die back, largely due to lack of light and oxygen. If the crowns of the less tough herbaceous perennials or alpines are covered in leaves, they too start to deteriorate. So, like it or not, you need to do something - the sooner the better! A spring-tined rake is perfect for raking leaves off the lawn, and can even work quite well on a gravel drive. If you have a lot of lawn or a lot of leaves then the easiest way to deal with them is to mow the lawn. Provided you keep the hopper or grass-collector on the mower, when you empty it out you’ll have a fantastic mix of grass 66
clippings and chopped leaves. On beds and borders you can pick by hand, or you could invest in a leaf vacuum or a leaf blower (and this can be used on most drives and paths, and lawns too). After collecting the leaves, make leaf mould. It is easy and makes a fantastic soil mulch or conditioner…for free! Leaves are best rotted down on their own (they take longer to decompose than the rest of the stuff in your compost heap and need less air and warmth), so make yourself a simple and inexpensive leaf mould bin. Just drive four stakes into the ground to make the corners of a square, and then attach chicken mesh around the outside to make a cage. Stack the leaves in, tread or firm them, add some water if they are dry, then more water if the weather remains dry… and then leave them be. Chop up larger or tougher leaves (like horse chestnut) first so they rot down much faster - either mow them with the lawnmower or ‘chop’ them with a sharp spade. Avoid very spiky leaves, and those that are very leathery and tough mainly evergreens such as holly, laurel and camellia, or those from sycamore and plane. You can speed the process up by adding a leaf mould activator, which is available from garden centres.
You can also make leaf mould in a bin liner or other bag. Choose a good quality bin liner and cram it full of leaves, again adding water and/or activator if you wish. Then stab a few holes in the bag with a garden fork, loosely fold over the top and weigh it down with a brick. Bin liners full of leaves can be hidden anywhere that you have the space - perhaps behind the shed, garage or greenhouse. If you don’t like the idea of black plastic, then there are now some lovely jute mesh bags which can be crammed full of leaves and act as a perfect container whilst the leaf mould is forming, but will eventually rot down and add to the useful material you produce. You can see these on my website www.pippagreenwood.com/ products. Whichever method you use you should have a useable product in 12-18 months, but leave it a bit longer and it will be even better! Visit Pippa’s website www. pippagreenwood.com for gorgeous gardening things including the unique ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ - you choose the vegetables you’d like to grow and Pippa sends garden-ready plants as well as weekly advice and tips emails to you. Plus Nemaslug, signed books, jute composting bags and lots more besides.

RECIPE
Halloween Macaroons
For the ultimate Halloween sweet treat why not have a go at making a batch of French Macaroons? Makes 16 Ready in 1 hour, plus cooling 230g icing sugar, sifted 75g ground almonds 2 large egg whites 50g caster sugar Orange and black food colouring gel 55g unsalted butter, softened ½ tsp vanilla extract TIP The filled macaroons will keep in an airtight box in the fridge for 2-3 days. Stand at room temperature for 30 minutes before serving.
1. Place half the icing sugar and all the ground almonds in a food processor and process for 30 seconds, or until fine and powdery. Sift the mixture into a mixing bowl, discarding any tiny pieces of almonds left in the sieve. Set aside. 2. Whisk the egg whites in a large bowl until softly peaking. Gradually whisk in the caster sugar, to make a firm and glossy meringue. Whisk in enough of the orange food colouring gel to colour the meringue deep orange. 3. Fold one third of the icing sugar mixture into the meringue using a spatula. Repeat with another third of the mixture. Finally add the last third and continue to cut and fold the mixture until it forms a shiny and thick batter that falls in a slow ribbon when the spatula is lifted. 4. Line 2 large baking sheets with baking paper. Spoon the mixture into a large piping bag fitted with a 1cm plain piping nozzle. Pipe 32 discs of the mixture onto the baking sheets, each with a diameter of 3cm. Lift the nozzle at the
74
top of half the piped discs to create a small point. Leave for 30 minutes to allow the macaroons to dry and form a slight crust. Preheat the oven to 160°C / Fan 140°C / Gas Mark 3. 5. Bake, one sheet at a time for 10-15 minutes, or until the macaroons have a crisp shell and the frilly bases don’t stick when gently lifted from the paper. Leave on the baking sheets for 10 minutes, then carefully transfer to a wire cooling rack to cool completely. 6. To decorate, dip the tip of a fine paintbrush into the black food colouring gel and paint pumpkin faces on the 16 pointed macaroons. 7. To make the filling, beat the butter, remaining icing sugar and vanilla extract in a bowl until smooth and creamy. Place all the undecorated macaroon shells flat-side up on a board. Pipe a small mound of the buttercream onto each shell then gently sandwich together with a decorated shell, pressing down gently.

Work Starts On New Lakeside Centre Mayor of Eastleigh Cllr Jane Welsh visited Lakeside Country Park to see the start of the construction of the new Eastleigh Lakeside community buildings by the Construction Partnership, who are based in Hamble.
Mayor of Eastleigh Cllr Jane Welsh with Cllr Paul Bicknell and Darren Hancock from the Contruction Partnership
The Council’s Eastleigh Local Area Committee approved plans to replace the existing buildings with a new watersports and storage building, which includes new changing facilities, offices and a multi-use room developed on the site - enabling improved use of the lakes by the local community, voluntary groups and the education sector. The multi-use room will also include a kitchen area and serving hatch to provide an opportunity to use the facilities in this great location. Three offices will also be provided that could be used by local organisations or businesses, together with new office facilities for Council staff. The popular Lakeside facility
is currently used by a range of local groups and organisations for canoeing, kayaking, open water swimming and other activities including fishing, model boating and dog training with around 10,000 users and 700 sessions on the water last year. Use of the lakes and the country park will continue throughout the build as temporary showers and other facilities have been provided. Residents are reminded however that this is a construction site and that care and attention must be taken when visiting the park. Your Legal Options For Divorce
would be awarded both residence and primary care of her children. After years of petitioning from groups such as the prolific ‘Fathers 4 Justice’ representing fathers who often felt, at best, of secondary importance and, at worst, completely side-lined from their children’s lives, times have changed.
Courts these days are more inclined to give ‘Shared Residence Orders’ in recognition of the rights of both parents to play an active part in their children’s lives. Indeed, there has been shared parenting legislation put forward by My wife and I are government ministers aimed about to begin divorce at strengthening relationships proceedings. I intend to seek between children and their parents after separation. joint custody of our three
Q:
children aged between 6 and 13 years old and I have been told to expect a 50/50 split of time between myself and their mother. Is this right?
The assumption is often made, and this seems to be supported by your particular source of information, that shared residence means an even division of time between two parents, but Ben, Chandlers Ford so far in my answer you may have noticed one important view has I know it is one of the most not been addressed – that of the frustrating answers you can get, children. but ‘yes and no’, The subject of There are many people in my shared parenting after a marriage profession who are raising or relationship breaks up is a concerns that the wellbeing of very difficult issue and one that the children themselves is being depends entirely on individual overlooked. How close do you circumstances. intend to live to the mother of Several years ago, it was fairly your children? Will there be the standard practice and pretty same number of bedrooms and much expected that a mother facilities in both parental homes?
A:
Is it good for children to spend a lot of time shuttling between parents, often more than once a week, running the risk of them feeling that they don’t properly live in either household? For a lot of fathers having children for half the time can present quite a challenge. What if a father has a full time job and the mother doesn’t? In that case, the default position of equal shared parenting could an unrealistic expectation. Also, if fathers start to believe they get an automatic 50/50 shared residence order from the Courts, it could undermine the Government’s drive towards mediation and out of court settlements. I believe the primary focus of any divorce proceedings should be on the rights and welfare of the children and current legislation does seek to ensure that arrangements following breakdown are based on the best interests of the child. In most cases, that is maintaining a meaningful relationship with both parents whenever possible. So, yes, you have every right to have access to your children and unless there is good reason, you should expect just that. However, regarding the 50/50 even split, that will depend on a number of factors including those I have mentioned above. By Emma Cole

FINANCE
What You Need To Know About NS&I Premium Bonds By Ann Haldon
Premium Bonds were first introduced in 1956 by Harold MacMillan as a way to reduce inflation, and they remain a popular savings choice today. It is estimated that over £50 billion is held in the Premium Bond ‘pot,’ making them the largest savings product in the UK. Not a ‘standard’ savings option, bonds pay no interest and never expire. They can make you a millionaire though, if you are lucky enough to win one of the two £1 million draws each month. How do they work? Bonds up to the value of £50,000 can now be bought following a recent rise in the maximum limit. At the other end of the scale the minimum purchase is £100 which buys you 100 £1 bonds, with all bonds being entered into a monthly prize draw. Premium Bond numbers are picked at random by ERNIE (Electronic Random Number Indicator Equipment), and you can check whether you’re a winner via the NS&I website from the third day of each month. The government funds the prize money by calculating a rate of interest as if the bonds were ‘standard’ government bonds, rather than using money from the sale of new Premium Bonds. You can buy them from a post office, or directly from NS&I by phone or online. How much can you win? Winnings range from £25 to the 82
£1 million jackpot, with prizes also including a percentage of £25,000, £50,000 and £100,000 wins each month. Returns average the equivalent of around 1.3% according to Moneywise, who also state that the chance of winning from a single bond are approximately 1 in 26,000. You can be lucky though – the Guardian recently reported a £1 million jackpot winner who held just £400 worth of bonds. For those wanting a reliable income from savings, however, other products would be more suitable if they are willing to forego instant access in favour of higher interest rates. If you bought Premium Bonds in the dim and distant past, it might be worthwhile looking on the NS&I website where there’s an ‘unclaimed prizes’ finder. Should you choose Premium Bonds over traditional savings accounts? The problem with Premium Bonds is that because you are not guaranteed a return on your money, the investment could reduce in value over time due to inflation. Other savings accounts, even though their interest rate may be low, offset this issue a little. If you are a higher rate tax payer, you may find investing in Premium Bonds useful if you have exhausted other tax-free options. People often buy bonds after inheriting money, or when they need to ‘store’ a lump sum temporarily – a deposit on a property or an inheritance, for example.
So in general terms, Premium Bonds should probably not be the first choice for savings – the main attraction for many is the potential chance of a big win. Government’s wishes for Premium Bonds Economic Secretary to the Treasury, Harriet Baldwin, explained the government’s goals regarding Premium Bonds, “Our long-term plan is all about supporting savers and boosting working people’s financial security at all stages of life..... That’s why we have increased the amount people can invest in premium bonds for the second time in two years.” Although not suitable for savers looking for a guaranteed regular income, Premium Bonds offer a way to boost a nest egg. They hold a special place in the nation’s heart – along with ERNIE of course. http://www.moneywise.co.uk/ banking-saving/savings-accountsisas/premium-bonds-what-youneed-to-know http://www.theguardian.com/ money/2015/may/30/premiumbonds-safe-savings-waste-time http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/ personalfinance/savings/11245455/ How-to-claim-forgotten-PremiumBonds-and-the-last-known-locationsof-the-lost-100k-winners.html http://www.nsandi.com/ernie http://www.nsandi.com/do-i-haveany-unclaimed-prizes

Which are the Main Vaccines Available for my Cat? Vaccinations and boosters are part and parcel of owning any pet. Here are some of the diseases posing the greatest risk to your cat’s health.
Cat Flu The existence of many different strains of flu means that it will never be completely wiped out, but a cat flu vaccine provides a degree of protection against this disease, which can spread rapidly between cats.
The Village VeTerinary CenTre 5 Pilgrims Close, Chandlers Ford SO53 4ST
Friendly & Caring Experienced Team All family pets including tortoises and chickens Free insurance claim administration save up to 40% on the routine health care costs of your pet – call us for more information.
Infectious Enteritis A widespread virus, Feline Infectious Enteritis can be fatal. It is a severe infection of the gut caused by the feline parvovirus, which can be picked up from infected animals and equipment, including bedding and food dishes.
Feline Leukaemia Feline Leukaemia is transmitted via saliva, and can be deadly if not overcome by the cat’s own immune system. The vaccine offers some protection for outdoor cats. Indoor cats may not need it due to their low exposure to risk.
Feline Chlamydia Cats between the ages of five weeks and nine months are said to be at particular risk of Feline Chlamydia, a disease characterised by conjunctivitis and sneezing. The vaccine does not protect against the infection, but helps to reduce its effects.
Which vaccines should you give your cat? This depends on several factors: • • •
Its age and general health Reactions to any previous vaccinations Its risk of exposure to disease
An initial course of vaccines may be given to kittens as young as seven weeks old, with regular annual boosters needed throughout life in order to maintain immunity. http://www.rspca.org.uk/ adviceandwelfare/pets/general/ vaccinating http://www.pdsa.org. uk/pet-health-advice/ kittens-and-cats/ health#vaccinations By Ann Haldon 94
