I had a fall just before Christmas on a skiing trip and dislocated my shoulder and broke my arm. Five months later and I still have miles to go before I have a complete recovery. Apart from it being a general inconvenience, there were two unbearable things.
Melanie Tinson & Tania Houston
Firstly I couldn’t drive. That only lasted about four weeks but even to catch the train somewhere meant getting a lift, so I really felt imprisoned. Secondly I wasn’t able to dry my hair. You simply can’t do that with one hand and so for the whole of the spring I either looked a mess (half the week) or looked great because I’d been to the hairdressers (the weekends). Still – silver lining and all that – there were a couple of benefits. As I couldn’t do any housework I had to get a cleaner in. Both Kevin and I work from home so I always felt I couldn’t justify it, but now I have someone I’m not about to change. As an aside, having someone coming in to clean means that I make a big effort to tidy up on the night before she arrives. Secondly as I was on painkillers for some months, I hardly drank at all and dry January has become a habit now. I was convinced no alcohol would mean the winter excess weight would fall off; sadly not the case. I couldn’t get to the gym and didn’t want to walk outside because I’d paid for my hair to be done! So I’m now frantically trying to shift the spare tyre before my summer holiday. If you are trying to find a good way to exercise yourself, we are always looking for distributors of the magazine in Marchwood, Dibden Purlieu and Hythe - and you’ll be paid for it too. See page 13 for details.

Fabulous Fifth Folk Festival New Forest Folk Festival, Plaitford, near Romsey, now in its fifth year, can boast a fantastic line-up yet again, with headlining popular folk bands Show of Hands, Feast of Fiddles and Fotheringay. Plus, this year a contemporary folk band Ranagri, who have teamed up with Tony Christie, (believed to be one of the finest singers of our generation), to create some exciting new music. Their joint new album ‘The Great Irish Songbook’, celebrates traditional songs from a shared Irish heritage. The decision was made last year to bring forward the date of the festival to the beginning of the festival season, to avoid clashing with other events in the area. The date for this year’s festival is 6th – 10th July. Nick Curtis, who organises the logistics of the festival says, “We are really excited to have such a great line-up and are already planning for next year’s bands to ensure we can offer our folk fans the best on the circuit. “To have Tony Christie on stage this year too, is a real treat. Ranagri and Tony have recently released a new album giving the folk scene Feast of Fiddles on stage a completely new sound.” Tony commented; “I have always liked the traditional Irish songs and the opportunity for me to perform with Ranagri at the New Forest Festival this year is great. We are playing just before Feast of Fiddles in the line-up and I personally can’t wait to see them in full swing.” Photographs by Keith Curtis 6

GARDENING
Tackling Troublesome Weeds by Pippa Greenwood www.pippagreenwood.com
Why is it that weeds always seem to grow faster and more vigorously than pretty well anything you actually choose to plant in your garden? It’s certainly the case in my garden! In no time at all they come into growth, produce sizeable leaves and stems and quite often seem to be flowering and then seeding in only a few weeks.
Top of my weed hate list is that tiny and innocuous looking one called hairy bittercress (Cardamine hirsuta). It produces a rather attractive little rosette of leaves which in no time at all is topped with a short spike with tiny and indeed pretty white flowers. So why do I despise it? It is simply that it spreads by pinging out its seeds within such a short space of time that if you don’t pull them up very promptly you soon have what amounts to a forest of these plants all over your garden. Weeds are typically described as ‘any plant which is growing in the wrong place’ and this could mean your flowerbeds, your vegetable garden, your shrubbery or even your lawn. So what is it that makes weeds such a nuisance? • They feed and take up moisture in great quantities in order to grow in the way they do, and sometimes compete actively with the nearby garden plants that you are so carefully nurturing. • Some of them grow so rapidly that they can create shade and so stunt the growth of smaller plants nearby. • Those which have an almost ground-cover like effect can soon swamp garden plants and cause their growth to be distorted or held back. • Occasionally weeds may also
8
harbour pests or diseases which can then move on to your garden plants. Everyone has some weeds in their garden, but what can you do to minimise the problems they cause, yet avoid spending hours on end with a hoe in your hand or a sprayer at your fingertips? • Always try and get on top of weeds early in the year removing as many as you can before your garden plants start to grow strongly will make weeding easier and also cut down on the amount of competition the weeds cause. A hoe is one of the quickest ways to effectively kill off most annual weeds, but it needs to be a good one. My favourite is UK designed with a heartshaped head and a blade on all edges, meaning that you are hoeing every time you pull or push the hoe – it also has a relatively small head to making it easier to hoe in confined spaces, between plants and in gaps in between rows without risk of damage to your plants. It is a hoe we fight over at home; find out more on my website. • Disturb the soil as little as possible when you weed, as this often causes more weed seeds to germinate, and even if these have been lying dormant in the soil for some while, as soon as the soil is disturbed
they come to life - so if you are not careful you may make the problem worse. • Some people avoid anything other than an early weeding and a late weeding, as they find that regular weeding seems to bring many more seeds to the surface and encourages weed seed germination; hence it is best to put up with a few weeds during the growing season. • Whatever you do, it is essential to remove your weeds before they set seed – that old saying of ‘one year’s seeds is seven years’ weeds’ really is true in many cases. • Avoid composting any weeds which are setting seed, have set seed or have particularly pernicious and resilient roots (dock and dandelion are classic examples of these). • When removing deep-rooted weeds such as dock and dandelion, always make sure that you take out every
fragment of root, as each piece left behind has the potential to form a new plant. The best tool I know for removing dandelion roots in one go is my little red-handled weeder – small but built out of stern stuff and by tucking the hook-like head beneath the rosette of leaves and close to the centre of the plant, I find it easy to pull out the root in its entirety almost every time. See www.pippagreenwood.com/ products/good-growing for more information. • Don’t take a short cut by rotovating ground which is heavily infested with weeds such as dandelions, docks, nettles or couch grass, as you’ll be chopping up their roots and helping to create more plants! • If you want to sow annuals or vegetable crops directly and minimise later problems with weeds, then try the stale seedbed technique. All this
means is that you get the area in which you intend to sow prepared well in advance of your proposed seed sowing date. This allows dormant weed seeds to germinate so you can then carefully remove the weed seedlings, and then sow or plant up as you wish. Because you have already removed one major flush of weeds, you tend to have fewer problems later. • Don’t forget the importance of a good deep mulch; many weeds can be kept at bay or the seeds prevented from germinating successfully if you cover the soil surface with a mulch which is a minimum of two or preferably three inches (5 – 7.5 cm) deep. • Use weedkillers with caution and ensure you choose one appropriate for the problem you have. Weedkillers are designed to kill off plants and they can do a lot of damage if allowed to contaminate your garden.

But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service the Hythe &

INTERVIEW
Travis
Fran Healy and Andy Dunlop are one half of Travis. They spoke to Lucy Ambache on The Evening Breeze and talked comebacks, making movies and why they might be responsible for Coldplay. Where have you been? What’s been going on? Fran: In the last six weeks I’ve been in Mexico City, Texas, Paris, Tokyo, Berlin, London, Glasgow, Milan and now here. We’re just running around telling everyone we’ve got a record out! We hadn’t been played for a long time on the radio and I think that’s because we’d gone off to be dads. We were putting records out but we weren’t putting the ‘foot down’. Now the kids are 8,9, 10 years old we can really concentrate on getting out there. You scheduled dad time? Blokes do that? Fran: Before you have kids, people tell you that you’ll never get that time back with your kids and if you’re in a band, it’s not a normal job - you’re away for six months or so. So I think for us we were ‘nah, let’s be at home’ and we were lucky enough to be pretty successful 20
so we could buy that time with our kids. A lot of (other) people buy gold racing cars and ridiculous, stupid things but I think it was money well spent. You’re credited for paving the way for the likes of Coldplay and Keane. That’s pretty amazing? Andy: We invented Coldplay in a room. Fran: We constructed them out of foam and bits of wires – and gave them our cast-off songs <laughs>. We were around at the end of the nineties, and we made the ‘Man Who’ album which was pretty incongruous with what was going around at the time and it was very successful – and I think when something like that happens, the record industry goes ‘let’s sign a bunch of this’ so for the next four years that was pretty much what you got. It wasn’t our intention but that’s what happens. A song like ‘Why Does It Always Rain On Me’. Do you still love it?
The simpler the song, the better - so I love it. Your new single ‘Magnificent Time’ is so ‘your sound’. Fran: Interesting story about that track is that it is a co-write between me and Tim from Keane. He sent me a text and said he’d written a song that sounded like him doing a bad impersonation of Travis! You’re on tour throughout May. You’re looking forward to that? Andy: Yeah. We’ve done one proper full show in Japan, and we had eight songs in the set and they sat brilliantly with all the old songs. It’s going to be an exciting show I think Fran: The thing is because we’ve done the album and the movie, we’ve done the visuals so they look great so we were like “we have to bring the live show up to that level as well”. So for the first time ever it’s a ’show’ show!
Andy: We get to play it every night and people still go mad to it so it’s still our touching point. Fran: I like that song because it’s really easy to play – it’s super simple! When you’re playing songs in a gig, the more complicated chord structures and rhythms, and then you have to think about lyrics, they get in the way of enjoying the show.

BEAUTY
A Touch Of Indulgence By Kate Duggan
Work and family demands can make it pretty difficult to find time to treat ourselves. Thankfully, our top picks this month make indulgence easy.
I have very dry skin, so tend to use rich body butters. But sometimes I like something a bit lighter, that doesn’t take half an hour to sink in. Odylique’s Rose Velvet Body Lotion, £29, has proven a godsend. It’s a powerhouse of botanical ingredients, including aloe, avocado, cocoa bean, coconut and rose petals, smells gorgeous and absorbs quickly. My skin just drinks it up, and feels much softer and more hydrated for the rest of the day. Plus, as it’s 100% natural (93% organic), it’s gentle enough to use on even my daughter’s sensitive skin. Continuing on with the rose theme, another of my beauty essentials at the moment is Mixtress’s It’s All Roses Toner, £10.95. I find most toners too drying for my skin, but this one is really hydrating. The main ingredient is rose water, from petals that
22
have been steamed to extract the oil and juice. Unsurprisingly, it smells beautiful and is perfect for freshening up on a hot day. I like to keep it to hand to spritz if my skin feels dried out by central heating or airconditioning. It’s great at removing any last traces of makeup, and leaves skin feeling wonderfully soft. I try a lot of cleansers as a beauty writer, but Akamuti’s Sweet Orange Facial Cleanser, £7, is one of my all-time favourites. The sweet orange oil works as a natural exfoliator, to wipe away dead skin cells and leave me with softer, ‘glowier’ skin. Other natural oils, including sweet
almond and olive oil, ‘feed’ my skin and leave it softer and plumper. It’s effective at removing makeup (including mascara), but gentle enough for even my sensitive skin. Plus, a little goes a long way, so it’s superb value for money. A new lipstick always feels like a real indulgence. More so than a mascara or pretty much any other cosmetic product. A pop of colour and I’m set for whatever lies ahead that day. Clarins’ new Joli Rouge Brilliant Lipsticks, £19.50, are a real treat. Formulated with organic marsh samphire extract and mango oil, they’re very hydrating, so leave lips feeling utterly pampered. With a choice of 12 colours, there’s one to suit any skin tone. Guava gets my vote for daytime wear, though coral tulip comes a very close second.
I’m a bit lazy when it comes to skincare, so I do love a product that makes it easier. Plantscription Powerful Lifting Overnight Mask, £52, by Origins does just that. As implied by the name, you massage it into your skin before bed, then forget about it. It absorbs into your skin, so you don’t need to faff around with cotton wool pads or a muslin cloth to remove it. Natural ingredients sourced from around the globe include Indian Commiphora, a tree resin that works to stimulate skin’s own antiageing Hyaluronic Acid. The mask helps to tighten, lift and plump skin, so you look fresher-faced in the morning, even if the kids/dog/partner woke you up several times in the night.

HOME & INTERIORS
Outdoor Living By Katherine Sorrell Syon relaxer set, £599, Wyevale Garden Centres, 0344 272 3000; www.wyevalegardencentres.co.uk.
Longer days and (fingers crossed) lots of sunshine mean it’s time to head out to the garden. However large or small your outside space, some careful planning will ensure that it is flexible enough for playing games, entertaining or simply putting your feet up and relaxing, writes Katherine Sorrell
Bundle hanging chair, £395, Idyll Home, 01270 812717; www. idyllhome.co.uk 26
The days of formal, look-butdon’t-touch gardens, with manicured lawns and ranks of ordered flowers in borders are – most would say thankfully – long gone. Today’s gardens are more like an outdoor room, used for playing, cooking, socialising and resting; in other words, they are multifunctional spaces that look good but also work hard for every member of the family. It sounds wonderful, but if your garden is in need of an update, just how do you go about achieving this magical blend of practical and pretty? The secret, of course, is in the planning. Look at the bigger picture first. How will you use the space and what do you want from it? To begin with, sketch a plan of your garden on graph paper, and gather samples of the materials you intend to use – such as slate, willow or terracotta – to ensure that they co-ordinate. If in doubt, consider consulting a professional, whose training and experience means they will undoubtedly come up with practical solutions and inspirational ideas you would never have thought of yourself. In a large garden, the ideal
layout includes separate areas for dining, relaxing and playing – perhaps with a ‘secret’ children’s area at the far end, including structures such as a swing, trampoline, climbing frame or tepee. A peaceful area away from both the house and the kids would be the ideal spot for a hammock or a deck chair – perhaps near some scented flowers or under a tree for shade. And the dining area is best set closest to the house, with space nearby for a barbecue or perhaps even an outdoor kitchen. Consider changes in levels – they add interest to a garden and are easier to deal with than slopes – but if you are carrying a tray out from the house, it’s best to avoid lots of steps between the door and the dining table. Flooring is key, too, dramatically affecting both how your garden looks and also how it feels underfoot. Will you choose stone slabs, gravel, bricks, decking, wood chips or perhaps tiles that complement the flooring in your kitchen for an inside-outside look? Just like indoors, where different types of flooring can differentiate, say, a kitchen from a dining room, your choice of garden flooring can signal a change from one area
to another. It is also a question of practicality and cost: specify a few stone slabs for the dining area, for example, and save money with woodchips in the children’s play area. Verticals are just as important, providing privacy, screening and dividing, adding visual interest and offering places for climbers to grow. Think about fences (dull ones can be changed fairly easily, or painted a bright colour for va va voom), hedges, walls, arches, arbours and pergolas – a simple metal archway over a path, for example, entwined with fragrant honeysuckle, would make a lovely focal point, while a small wooden pergola can provide a link between two different areas of the garden as well as offering a shaded spot in which to sit. Finally, furniture. Take the indoors outside with waterproof
upholstery, outdoor sofas and all-weather rattan, choosing designs and colourways that link with the whole space. You can even accessorise outdoor sofas with scatter cushions and interior throws or blankets for when it gets chilly. Meanwhile, if space is restricted, opt for folding furniture and play equipment that can be put away when necessary, or consider building seating into your hard landscaping – an extra-wide low wall makes a great bench seat, for example, and you can even build in hinged storage for cushions. Armed with some basic design principles, the time is right to start planning your stunning summer garden. Before you know it, you’ll be enjoying the sunshine day after day (we live in hope). And who knows, your efforts may also provide a long-term return. Creating more useable space

Courtesy Or Calamity? On today’s crowded roads, driving care, courtesy and politeness go a long way to a calmer motoring experience for everyone. But some drivers let things swing the other way and end up being just as dangerous as the maniacs. Many dual carriageways have a short slip road and it is quite common to have to wait for a safe gap to appear before joining the traffic. I was waiting in exactly that situation recently and an approaching driver slowed down to a crawl and flashed their lights as an indication that they were letting me in. The car behind barrelling along at 60-70+, was
suddenly presented with brake lights and, with traffic to the right of them, nowhere to go. I could see the anchors go on, the rubber smoke from the tyres and the nose pitch down as the driver fought to bring the car to a halt. I was paralysed by the possible ensuing disaster so never did pull out. In fact the Highway Code says the flashing of lights should only be used to warn other drivers of your presence, not as an “Ok, go ahead” message. However, waiting to turn right out of a junction in heavy traffic, someone giving way is often the only way to get out. But if you are the ‘give-wayee’ in this situation, don’t just slow down and flash, come to a safe halt so there can be no misunderstanding of your intention. By all means be courteous, but don’t abandon the basics of safe driving e.g. checking your mirrors, just to help someone else. by Iain Betson

BMW At The Movies By James Baggott The BMW Z8 - on location with James Bond
There’s no greater advert for a car than a starring role in a movie – and for BMW there have been a few!
BMW Z3 Roadster
One of the biggest was when BMW took over the Bond franchise with a centrepiece in 1995 blockbuster GoldenEye. Bond, played by Pierce Brosnan, drives the first generation Z3 with Bond girl Natalya Simonova, played by Izabella Scorupco, in the passenger seat around Cuba before the final mission. As with many Bond cars, the Z3 was kitted out with the latest gadgets, including a parachute braking system, all-point radar, missiles housed behind the headlights, and the iconic ejector seat.
In the famous chase through a multi-storey car park, Bond drives the 750iL from the back seat to remain under cover and thanks to the screen on his phone can see everything. After jumping out of the car, Bond drives the BMW into the assailants before driving off the car park and into a rental car shop several floors below.
With little need for the Z3 in GoldenEye, which involved Bond driving a tank through Moscow, Brosnan returned in Tomorrow Never Dies and this film included one of the most impressive Bond cars, thanks to the amount of tech on-board.
With a modern and stylish roadster to accompany one of the most stylish film characters, the Z8 was met with an unfortunate end when a helicopter wielding a circular saw cut the car in half at a caviar factory. Shame. It was fitted with surface-to-air missiles that had taken out a helicopter previously and it even had six cup holders, so it was very useful.
Bond was given a 750iL that included bulletproof windows, electrified door handles, tear gas, spike dispenser and missiles concealed in the roof. The most impressive feature of the lot, however, was the fact the car could be remote controlled from a touchpad in Bond’s phone. 30
BMW’s most recent appearance in the Bond franchise was in The World Is Not Enough, and to close the century, BMW provided their final car of the 20th century, the Z8 roadster.
As a main character, Jason Statham’s E38 735i in 2002’s The Transporter is pretty key, with much of the early action
involving the 7 Series. One of its best moments is the chase following the bank robbery, where Frank drives superbly around the streets and ends up jumping off a bridge onto a car transporter lorry. Noted for its driving sequences, 1998 film Ronin - set in Paris and Nice - involved plenty of action, and with the film nearing its final act, a BMW E34 M5 took place in one of the best chases in film. With the director wanting realism from every sequence, the Paris chase involved the M5, driven by Natascha McElhone’s Deirdre, with Robert De Niro pursuing in a Peugeot 406. The M5 dances between the traffic on both sides of the road, causing havoc as it drives around the congested city. Through tunnels and against the motorway traffic, the M5’s
sporting pedigree is shown off, with the throaty six-cylinder engine screaming throughout. The only way to take it down was a pot shot from Jean Reno hitting one of the tyres, causing the M5 to flip. We jump forward a little with our final car on the list to 2011, with the fourth instalment of the Mission: Impossible series. Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol involved one of the best concept designs, the Vision EfficientDynamic from 2009, and was the pre-cursor to the i8 electric sports car.
the film’s protagonist and prevent the start of a nuclear war. The V ED swept in and out of the Mumbai traffic and with a special HUD with navigation screen it looked pretty cool too. Other honourable mentions for BMW include the black and orange E24 633 CSi from Back to the Future II, the E28 5 Series from The Bourne Supremacy and Robert De Niro’s E31 850i from heist movie, The Score.
It was involved in the final act where Ethan Hunt, played by Tom Cruise, needed to intercept

TECHNOLOGY
Phone Home Are you ready to control everything in your house with a smartphone app? In the 1930s, magazines predicted a really exciting thing called the smart home - a home where everything was automated and easy to control. It’s taken its time to turn up, but smart home technology is finally here. From your boiler to your light bulbs, there’s an app for almost everything. Most smart home technology is designed to connect to your Wi-Fi network, either directly or via a little box called a hub. Once it’s connected you can then control it from your phone. There are smart thermostats, such as Google’s
Nest and British Gas’s Hive, that can automate your heating and even turn the heater up and down when you’re away from home. There are smart bulbs, such as Philips’ Hue, that can completely change the colour of your room with a single tap of your phone’s screen. There are smart baby monitors such as BabyPing that stream video of your (hopefully!) sleeping child to your phone, and there is a whole selection of smart cameras that you can use to monitor your house. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Both Apple and Google 34
have bet on home automation as one of the next big things, so they’re encouraging firms to make even more smart devices - although inevitably, Apple and Google’s systems aren’t compatible with one another so you need to pick sides. That’ll change in the longer term, because it’s in nobody’s interest to have rival, incompatible systems for such basics as light switches and heating controls, but at the moment it’s really important to check compatibility - so for example if you want to control smart home technology via an Apple iPhone or Apple Watch, you should look for devices that support Apple’s HomeKit. If you don’t, you could end up in a situation where you need a different app for each smart home product you buy, which is hardly making things simple. If you’re wondering what’s so smart about smart home technology, the answer is that by connecting different things together you can make interesting things happen. For example, Philips’ Hue bulbs work with Apple’s Siri voice recognition,
DeLonghi PrimaDonna Elite Wi-Fi coffee machine
so you can say “Hey Siri! Set scene to movie!” and the lights will change. Nest learns your habits to work out the best times and temperatures for heating your home, and can talk to your phone, see that you’re heading home from work and make sure the house is nice and toasty for your arrival. Sky’s latest Sky Q system can send video including your recordings - from your Sky box to any other room in the house, or to your phone or tablet when you’re far from home. There’s a catch, of course. Because this is all brand new technology, it’s quite expensive - so if you fancy a Bluetoothenabled DeLonghi coffee machine that you can command from the sofa, it’ll cost £1,500. Even relatively simple devices can be expensive, so for example smart plugs for remotely turning things on and off cost around £40, while a starter kit of three Philips Hue bulbs and a hub will set you back £149. Upgrading from Sky+HD to Sky Q costs from £99 to £249 and then comes in at £56 per month. As ever, being first on the block with new technology doesn’t come cheap so maybe the really smart homes will wait until the technology gets cheaper before taking the plunge.

RECIPE
Summer Pudding Serves 6 - 8 Ready in 1 hour, plus overnight chilling time This is a classic summer British dessert made with just a few simple ingredients. Make the day before serving to allow plenty of time for the sweet berry juices to soften the bread. Serve with softly whipped cream, Greek style yoghurt or tangy crème fraiche.
Ingredients: • 275g small strawberries, hulled and halved • 275g raspberries • 175g blueberries • 100g black or red currants, removed from stalks • 175g caster sugar • 10 large slices medium-sliced white bread (preferably one day old) • 1 whole strawberry, to decorate
TIP Take care not to overcook the fruit in step one. All the berries should be just softened but still holding their shape. 38
1. Place all the fruit in a large saucepan with the sugar and 3 tbsp cold water. Heat gently, stirring occasionally, until the sugar has dissolved. Simmer gently for 2-3 minutes until the juices begin to run. Remove the pan from the heat and set aside.
2. Cut away the crusts from the slices of bread. Cut a round of bread from one slice to fit the base of a 1.2 litre pudding basin. Cut the rest of the slices in half lengthways.
3. Strain off some of the juice from the fruit into a shallow dish. Line the pudding basin with cling film, allowing it to overhang the sides. Dip the round of bread in the strained juice and use to line the base of the basin. Use most of the slices to line around the sides of the basin, dipping each one in the juice and overlapping the slices as you go, so there are no gaps.
4. Use a slotted spoon to spoon all the fruits into the bread-lined basin, pressing down gently. Cover completely with the rest of the bread slices, trimming them to fit as necessary.
5. Spoon over a little of the remaining juice then cover with a saucer that fits just inside the top of the basin and weigh down with weights or food cans. Chill in the fridge overnight. Reserve the remaining juice.
6. To serve, remove the weights and invert the pudding onto a lipped plate. Remove the cling film. Pour over the reserved juices and decorate with a fresh strawberry.
