Having a bad hair day? Don’t worry Helen Taylor offers some words of practical advice.

Q. I spend a lot of money each month on my salon colour but it seems to fade very quickly. I want it to stay looking vibrant for longer; what can I do? A. Check whether your colour is permanent or semi-permanent. Many women visit the salon and don’t know which dye is being applied to their hair. If it is permanent, the colour will stay in until it is cut out or recoloured, however if it is a semi-permanent dye then you should expect it to wash out after approximately 18 to 20 washes – and remember, although permanent colours have a lot more staying power, they are much harsher on your hair, so if it is in bad condition, stick to a semipermanent dye. What colour is your hair? Reds are notoriously difficult to maintain. If you have a red hue then you will have to be prepared to colour your hair more frequently. Reds fade

fast; washing, blow-drying, styling, sunlight and chlorine all contribute to your colour fading quickly. Don’t despair however as there are specialist shampoos designed for red colours that can help. After having your hair coloured wait at least 48 hours before washing to protect your new shade - this extra time will allow the colour to settle. Always wash your locks with water at a cool temperature because hot water opens the cuticles on the hair shaft, allowing dye to escape - cooler water will give your colour more longevity. Avoid clarifying shampoos these are products which are designed to deep clean the hair. Not surprisingly they also strip out colour causing it to fade fast. Always buy shampoo and conditioner which is specifically designed for coloured hair because they are formulated without the harsh chemicals that are responsible for stripping out colour. If you have a holiday in the sun planned, pack hair products

with SPF protection and UV filters to protect against the sun’s rays. If you are in the pool, keep your hair out of the water, or coat it in conditioner before you take a swim. Q. No matter what I do with my hair it always ends up looking flat. How can I inject some volume? A. Use a volumising product on your roots when your hair is damp. Tip your head upside down to blowdry until your hair is nearly dry, then flip your head back and use a round brush with a metal barrel to add lift and volume throughout the top sections. Think carefully about your hair colour as one all-over colour can make your hair look flatter; choose highlights in several shades to create more interest and give the illusion of a thicker, fuller and more voluminous mane. Q. My hair is really frizzy; what can I do to make it look shinier and smoother? A. Fight frizz by using a deep conditioning treatment every time you wash your hair. Remember to apply it to the lengths and ends only to avoid greasylooking roots. Before you dry your locks, apply a serum or oil, section off your locks and direct your

hairdryer’s nozzle downwards as you dry, to create a smooth finish. If you are still finding that your style is frizzy when you have finished, add a little more oil or serum. Q. My hair looks damaged, dry and dull. I have been using straighteners on my long hair every day for some time - are they to blame? A. Yes. Any heat styling - straightening, curling, blow-drying - can have a damaging effect, especially on long hair styles. Heat tools dry out the lengths and ends of hair leaving locks looking frazzled. Although we all depend on them to create the looks we want for our hair, it is important not to over-use them. Always use a good quality heat protection spray before blowdrying, straightening or curling. Try to leave hair to dry naturally when you can and always deepcondition your mane.

The popular saying “whatever floats your boat” is very apt after my recent excursion on SS Shieldhall from Southampton’s Eastern Doc. And the other “Don’t knock it till you’ve tried it.” also applies as it was far more enjoyable than anticipated! On Friday 9 August I boarded this ship with family and my father in law who is a ship and train fanatic, so a day out on this heritage cargo-passenger ship during Cowes Week was his perfect birthday treat.

SS Shieldhall was built in the Clyde Shipyards and launched there 1955. She had a long and successful first career with Glasgow Corporation carrying treated sludge out to sea and, in the summer, taking passengers ‘doon the watter’ on pleasure trips, despite its cargo! Bought in 1977 by Southern Water she was finally withdrawn from commercial service in 1985 but saved and purchased for £20,000 in 1988 by The Solent Steam Packet Ltd that still operates her now. TSSP is a charity, registered as an Industrial and Provident Society, with its main objective being to preserve the SS Shieldhall in operational condition. She is maintained and operated entirely by volunteers and resides in Southampton’s Eastern Docks. TSSP was recently awarded a £1.4 million grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund South East. TSSP MD, Graham Mackenzie said: “This grant means that in addition to her silver anniversary, we can look forward to celebrating her ‘golden anniversary’ too. We look forward

to all the hard work that lies ahead, safe in the knowledge that Shieldhall is, and will continue to be, ‘Alive and Steaming.’ However, Graham points out that the award represents just the start of saving Shieldhall: ‘It is critical that support for the ship continues through our programme involving volunteers, members, donors, events and functions. We’d be delighted to welcome anyone who would like to support and get involved in the project.’ Stuart McLeod, Head of the Heritage Lottery Fund South East, said: “SS Shieldhall is part of the National Historic Fleet and is a fantastic surviving example of its kind. Through helping secure Shieldhall’s future the project will open up opportunities for young people to learn the skills needed to operate a ship of this type, and for the volunteers to reach out into the local community, encouraging engagement with one of the country’s most important maritime heritage assets, such as the Scouts Training Days this summer.” We set “sail” at 11am and

6 Divide a room into two Pros Carving up a large space to add another room is useful and can add value, even though you’re not actually creating any extra space. Cons You’ll need to create a separate doorway for the room, and include an opening window. Regulations Planning permission is

not usually needed, but Building Regulations apply to new walls, doors, windows and electrical work.

7 Put in an ensuite Pros Loved by buyers. Can be fitted into quite a small space. Cons Installing an ensuite at the expense of a bedroom could knock your property’s value. Regulations Planning permission isn’t usually needed, but Building Regulations approval is.

Finding the perfect builder Mr Perfect?

If you’re considering home renovation, extension or even a self-build, Kate McLelland offers some wise words here, that might just save your costs from going through the roof

As I write, I am currently four and a half weeks into a ‘three week’ kitchen renovation project. A thin layer of dust covers everything I own and there is a dent in my new fridge. The workmen have lost their initial enthusiasm and are grumbling about the job, their boss and their working hours. The kitchen unit supplier and the builder are at loggerheads and the constant roar of power tools has begun to drive me crazy (not to mention an unending diet of microwavable meals).

Does the perfect builder exist? If you have ever had building work carried out you might well shrug and say: “Nothing new there”, but in my case I thought – no, I really believed - I had found the Perfect Builder. So, does the perfect builder exist and if so, how can you find this almost mythical creature? Your search will be easier if you follow some basic guidelines. The internet is currently awash with websites bearing such names as www.mytrusted builder.co.uk, but it’s best to take some of their customer comments with a pinch of salt. Unfortunately no review system is foolproof and it’s not impossible to fake feedback. 18

Recommendation There’s no substitute for personal recommendation, so the first rule is to ask locally to see which tradesmen your neighbours would recommend (or not). Looking here in your magazine is a great place to search of course, because the tradespeople are local and the editor is likely to have been forewarned of any true rogues. Look for their accreditation on their adverts e.g. TrustMark (www.trustmark.org.uk) is a not for profit organisation, licensed by the Government and supported by consumer protection groups, that aims to connect members of the public with trustworthy building professionals. Additionally, Hampshire’s Buy with Confidence Scheme is worth looking out for. All the businesses on their scheme have been vetted and approved by Trading Standards to ensure that they operate in a legal, honest and fair way. Watch out for those too-good-to-betrue reviews and compare quotes carefully when recruiting or checking your builder online. Although the feedback is useful to read, membership of some of these organisations involves the barest minimum of checks and it can be fairly easy for a company to fake their credentials. Once you have identified three or four companies to call, the next

stage will be to invite them to your house so they can quote for the work. Take a deep breath before you open the door to your chosen candidates, because you will almost certainly meet some colourful characters, each with a different approach to your job.

Do your home-work It’s useful to start with a list of the things that you want done, so make several copies and give one to each builder. That list will probably change as you discuss the work, but it’s still a good place to start. Ask the builder to quote separately for each item on your list. If you accept a quote for a global amount - “To renovate and fit bathroom, £12,000+VAT” - he may come back to you later, claiming that certain items were not included in the original quote. With no written evidence to the contrary, you’ll have no basis for negotiation. When I invited quotes for my

kitchen, one builder refused point blank to price up the job because “You never know what’s lurking behind them old kitchen units and tiles”. I didn’t give him the job, but he had a fair point – an estimate can only be based on what is visible to the naked eye. You must always allow a contingency for hidden expenses, but no building firm should expect to start work without having provided at least some idea of their charges. You should ask the same questions of each person who comes to quote: “How long will it take?” “Do you have your own team of tradesmen, or do you subcontract?” “Will you provide a contract for the work?” “Have you done any similar jobs locally and can I contact the householder for a reference?” If your builder makes you feel that such questions are inappropriate or unnecessary, show them the door: a

reputable company should be happy to provide evidence of their work. Be aware that a few manipulative individuals may try to strike up a rapport with you, knowing that they’re more likely to pass off sub-standard work if they win your trust. The best builderclient relationships remain on a businesslike footing, so keep your eyes open and don’t be taken in by a charm offensive. The tips described above may make choosing a builder seem straightforward, but in practice I’ve found it’s not that easy. I chose someone who arrived on time, made careful notes, gave positive answers to all my questions and provided an itemised estimate but even the best builder can’t avoid the inevitable disruption and mess. “Trust me, it’ll be worth it,” he persistently reminds me as I watch the project progress. Oh, the power of positive thinking!

Local Film Nights The Titchfield Moviola was begun by a group of residents interested in films and in bringing a monthly cinema to the village for others to enjoy. Their film nights show recent releases as well as some great classics and art-house movies. Weed Attack Weed?

Ask a dictionary the definition of a weed and you’ll read that it’s ‘a plant growing in the wrong place’. Ask a gardener, and they’ll tell you that weeds are often the number one menace in their garden. Some weeds are pretty, some less so, but one thing they all have in common is that they are indeed growing where you don’t want them, and may be causing your garden plants to suffer. So if you want to wage war on those pesky weeds, and stand a chance of winning, take a look at my multi-pronged attack strategy.

Whatever the weed problem, it’s essential to prevent them from setting seed as most weeds are very efficient at building up their numbers by seed. So even if you don’t have the time to sort the weed out properly, make sure you cut off its head before it has a chance to even start to set seed. The old saying that ‘one year’s seed is seven years’ weed’ isn’t far from the truth.

Spaghetti roots Some weeds like couch grass, bindweed and nettles have amazingly resilient and farreaching underground stems or roots. If you’ve just taken on a new plot of land, be it a garden or an allotment, there is a good chance that it’ll be riddled with at least one of these spaghettirooted weeds. Whatever you do, don’t succumb to the temptation to use a powered cultivator or rotovator as this will chop the roots in to little bits and end up spreading and increasing the problem in the process.

Stop Stowaways When you’re next shopping for plants in your local garden centre or nursery make sure that you only bring home what you want, not those pesky weed stowaways that often lurk on the compost surface. I always do a bit of weeding before buying: especially for weeds such as the innocent looking hairy bitter-cress (Card-amine hirsuta) with their tiny rosettes or leaves and pretty little

Lawn Louts Lawn weeds such as dandelions and daisies are difficult to control as unlike the taller weeds, these rosette-forming plants won’t be harmed as you mow the lawn. One of the best methods is to tackle them with a sturdy old kitchen knife or a daisygrubber tool. It may be a slow process but will allow you to dig them out individually.

Deep Rooted Problems Some weeds such as

docks and dandelions have tough and chunky roots that are very difficult to kill. And to make matters worse, if you leave any sizeable bit of the root in the soil, it’s likely to form a new plant. Do everything you can to take out the entire root as you’ll be saving a lot of time in the long run. I have recently discovered a great pocket-sized weeder, originally from New Zealand but now manufactured over here. It’s brilliant for removing this sort of weed and others such as small thistles, creeping buttercups and so forth. Find out more in the ‘products’ section of www.pippagreenwood.com. It is also great for easing weeds out from gravelled areas.

Laying Carpet If large areas are weedy you could try the carpet option; literally covering the surface with a layer or two of carpet, held in place with bricks. If the carpet is placed fluffy side down and left in place for at least 18 months, the weeds will start to die off from lack of light. Make sure that the carpet is made from natural fibres, not synthetic or else you’ll be left with it in the soil, and for allotments, check that there are no restrictions on using carpet.

Time it Right Some weeds such as the purple flowered oxalis spread by forming tiny ‘bulbils’ or miniature bulbs below ground. If you try to dig these weeds out at this time of year, you’ll run in to trouble as the bulbils will be shed into the surrounding soil as you lift the plant out, making matters worse. Wait until next spring when the bulbils will be firmly attached and weed them out then.

They’re readily available at any decent garden centre and are a great way to weed your garden, especially if it’s largely annual weeds such as chickweed or groundsel that invade your plot. Keep the hoe sharp and use it regularly.

It all starts at the Shoe Inn

‘South Downs Way’. Cross a section of wooden duckboards and walk along the narrow footpath between hedge and tree lined fields that narrows down to a gully and climbs steadily for some 600 yards.

Exton lies just off the A32 Droxford to West Meon road in the Meon Valley. Park in the Shoe Inn (SO32 3NT) car park located on Shoe Lane. Authorisation to park is required (01489 877526). Alternatively, drive through the village almost back to the A32 and park in the small lay-by opposite the entrance to Manor Farm. This walk is described from the Shoe Inn. On leaving the pub, turn left towards the church, follow the lane through the village for 200 yards to a ‘T’ junction and turn right. Keep straight on until you join the main A32. Cross the road onto a footpath signed ‘No through road’. Cross a footbridge over the Meon River. Trace this path for around 400 yards and with barns in front of you and a path joining from the left, turn left along the signed 30

***Climb some wooden steps up to the disused railway track bed and turn left; walkers and cyclists can be seen heading up from the right from Wickham. Beacon Hill on your left and Old Winchester Hill on your right are occasionally glimpsed through the trees.*** Keep going straight for approximately 1200 yards ignoring other paths and tracks until you descend onto a minor road. Cross the road and climb the opposite bank to return to the track bed. Continue along the track for a further 1800 yards until it passes Pass under road bridge

under a road bridge. Access to this road is by walking further along to a footpath joining from the left for another 200 yards then turning left back on yourself up the slope to the road above.

Meon River

Turn left and walk along the road past Hayden Barn Cottage on the left. The road climbs steadily uphill for some 600 yards. Approaching the top of the hill, turn right onto a gravel track signed ‘Peake Farm’ and also signed as Monarch’s Way. Follow this track towards the farm for a good 1000 yards. At a left hand bend, ignore the track going straight on into a field. Follow the track around towards the farm, passing some fields with show jumping fences and stables for the local horses. At the farm buildings, turn sharp right onto a waymarked footpath running between fields. The path emerges onto a metalled road to Peakes Farm. Turn left at the road. Walk approximately 50 yards then turn

Historical note... In 940 AD, the village of Exton carried the name of East Seaxnatune meaning the farmstead of the East Saxons. The 13th century church of St Peter and Paul was heavily restored in 1847. In 1801, the population of Exton was 224. By 1901 it had grown slightly to 299 persons but reduced again to 230 in 2001. The Meon Valley railway line was opened in June 1903 to connect Alton to Fareham and Gosport. It was one of Hampshire’s least successful railway enterprises and closed in 1955.

right along the side of a barn. Follow the path around the end of the barn and then along the left hand boundary of a field. Turn left through a gateway at the field boundary to join a concrete and tarmac farm track.

Follow the signed path left along the right-hand boundary of a field, which switches half way up into a field requiring the walk to continue on the left hand edge. The path climbs steadily uphill, but offers some stunning views across mid Hampshire, Old Winchester Hill and surrounding areas. At the top of the rise, turn left along the field fence line and follow the path as it turns right along the left hand side of the field. At the end of the field, turn right onto the South Downs Way footpath leading away from Old Winchester Hill. The path meanders downhill alongside field boundaries with chalky conditions underfoot and some 1500 yards of twisting decent. At the bottom of the hill, turn left

into woodland. Follow the path left ignoring paths merging from the right. ***Climb some wooden steps to the railway track bed. Cross straight over and descend more steps onto the footpath used on your outward journey (as shown in the dialogue marked ***). Follow the footpath back to the A32, cross the road into Church Lane and retrace your steps back to your car. Mediterranean Fish Bake Yum! Serves 4 and ready in 50 minutes

This is a great one-pan dish full of fresh flavour. Monkfish is quite pricey but the meaty flesh is delicious and bakes really well, however you can replace it with cod loin, salmon steaks or thick pieces of haddock fillet if you prefer. Serve with a green salad and warmed ciabatta bread to mop up all the lovely herb and lemon flavoured pan juices. YOU WILL NEED...

NOW GET STARTED...

• 2 tbsp olive oil (choose a good quality fruity one)

1 Preheat the oven to 2000C/4000F/Gas Mark 6. Place the oil in a large non-stick roasting tin and heat in the oven for 5 minutes. Add the potatoes to the tin and toss to coat in the hot oil. Roast for 20 minutes, turning once.

• 350g small new potatoes, halved • 1 red pepper, deseeded and cut into chunks • 1 yellow pepper, deseeded and cut into chunks • 1 green pepper, deseeded and cut into chunks • 225g small plum tomatoes, halved • 4 monkfish fillets (each weighing about 150g) • 50g butter, softened • Pared rind and juice from 1 small lemon, plus extra wedges to serve • 1 tbsp fresh chopped oregano • Salt and freshly ground black pepper

2 Add the peppers and tomatoes to the roasting tin and toss to coat in the hot oil. Make a space in the tin and add the monkfish fillets. Return the roasting tin to the oven for 10 minutes. 3 Dot the butter over the fish fillets and sprinkle over the lemon rind, juice and oregano. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper and roast for a further 5-10 minutes until the fish is just cooked through and the potatoes and peppers are tender. 4 Slice each monkfish fillet and arrange with the potatoes, peppers and tomatoes on four warmed serving plates. Spoon over the pan juices and serve immediately with lemon wedges.

Ken thought they’d finally come to blows when Frank insisted she wear a safety helmet. It was all very well for him but Ken knew how long Cheryl spent on her hair every morning. She gave that mop more attention than she gave him. Reluctantly, she clipped the thing on muttering about health and safety gone mad. Ken didn’t dare let her see him laughing.

“Where’s this idea come from?” She explained that Donna tried it recently and had been raving about it ever since. Cheryl never liked to be outdone by Donna. That’s sisters for you. Ken joked, “Aren’t you worried about breaking a nail?” And she said tartly, “Sometimes, Ken, you’ve just got to get a bit dirty.” He was surprised and said, “Fine, you arrange it.” So he left it with her. They turned up on the day at a car park on the edge of Bower Crags and met the instructor, a nice lad called Frank. There was also a couple from Kidderminster and an older chap who never spoke. Frank took one look at Cheryl’s peep toe mules, and said, ‘You’ll need to change your footwear.” He offered her some battered Wellington boots, which she pulled on most begrudgingly. Then Frank handed them all a set of waterproof overalls. Cheryl turned very sulky. Ken tried cheering her up by pointing out that her linen slacks were dry clean only, and it was better to be safe than sorry. She had to agree with 40

They assembled at the mouth of the cave and Frank gave an introductory talk on potholing. Ken wished Cheryl could have paid more attention but she was texting Donna. She insisted she could text and listen at the same time. ‘Who’s she trying to kid?’ Ken thought, ‘Cheryl can’t listen even when she’s not doing anything at all’. Finally Frank said, “Right we’re ready to go in.” Cheryl looked up from her phone and asked, “Is that where we’re getting the clay from?” He looked surprised and said, “Yes, there’s lots of slippery clay in these caves, so go steady now.” Cheryl nudged Ken gleefully saying,

One by one, crocodile-style, they entered the mouth of the cave. Cheryl did Ken proud. She squeezed through every tight passageway, crawled on her hands and knees, and even dragged herself along on her stomach, getting absolutely filthy with not a peep of complaint. Though Ken was right at the back and couldn’t hear a word anyone was saying anyway. But Cheryl did it, and that’s the main thing. “You’re a star Cheryl!” Ken said, as they emerged, squelching, into the daylight. Yet Cheryl seemed bewildered. “When do we get started on the potter’s wheel?” She frowned, looking around. “Why would we need one of them dear?” Ken asked gently, concerned the darkness had affected her mind. “I thought we were going potholing,” she snapped. “That’s right, and we did,” he said. “Potholing, caving, spelunking – call it what you like.” Her mouth dropped open,

“Donna never got her clay from a cave.”

“I’ve only gone and mistaken potholing for pottery making,” she said, turning pale. “All I wanted was to make a cream jug like the one Donna made.”

Ken had no idea what she was on about, but was pleased that they were finally one up on Donna.

“You could still make a jug,” Ken replied. “After all, you’re wearing enough clay.”

Every year on four days in September, buildings of every age, style and function throw open their doors. It is a oncea-year chance to discover architectural treasures and enjoy a wide range of tours, events and activities that bring local history and culture to life.

So much to see and do Free of charge and right on your doorstep, Heritage Open Days is an event for everyone, whatever their background, age and ability. From castles to city halls, tunnels to tower tops, police cells to private homes, workshops to woodland walks, the variety of places and ways to discover them are endless.

Opening doors, eyes and minds Heritage Open Days celebrates what makes local communities and neighbourhoods special. By stimulating curiosity and discovery, the event connects people with their local places and helps foster a sense of belonging and pride. 42

Roots After a first pilot in Gosport proved a success, the now defunct Civic Trust established Heritage Open Days in 1994 as England’s contribution to the European Heritage Days. Starting out with some 700 sites, Heritage Open Days has since developed into Britain’s largest and most popular grassroots heritage event, with participation more than doubling during the first decade of the millennium. This year the focus is on the people who create history – from lords of the manor to shopkeepers, factory owners, merchants and monarchs. What’s great about Heritage Open Days is that it celebrates everyone equally, from shepherds

to millionaires, and the contributions they have made to our heritage landscape.

Shedfield Old Tower This 184-year old tower is all that remains of the original chapel of ease at Shedfield. The tower has been meticulously restored after many years of fundraising and a Heritage Lottery Fund grant. 14th & 15th September. No Booking required. Townhill Park House and Gardens, The Gregg School, Townhill Park House Cutbush Lane, Southampton, SO18 3RR Townhill Park House, was built in 1856 and extended in 1912. It was previously owned by Lord Swaythling and is now a school. Tours will be conducted by school pupils.
