Hello again Older generations enjoy entertaining the youngsters with stories of their world without computers and mobile phones, the first computer games, the VHS vs Beta battle and yes, I even remember music on 8 track cassettes! They claim it was a simpler world then but technology has brought the freedom to work from home, to stay in touch with friends and family, to shop online and to find out almost anything I want to instantly - fantastic. However, technology doesn’t stop us needing local businesses including someone to fix our computers when they go wrong! And that’s what this magazine is all about; a choice of local businesses in one handy guide. This a community magazine, too so when you feel like interacting with the real world rather than just the virtual one there’s lists of hobbies, clubs, local events and restaurants to help you choose where to go. www.discovercommunity.co.uk There’s too much to practically print in a magazine about all the local areas we cover so our new website is a great source of community stuff including a directory of local businesses which advertise in all our Discover editions. If you are involved in anything that you’d like your community to know about please tell me about it by using the Editorial Request form under Contact us or feel free to call me. Best wishes,
Melanie
p.s My apologies for the absence of the Directory of Independent Retailers this month. With the unexpected acquisition of a local Winchester magazine and launching our 8th title Discover Winchester, I simply ran out of time, hands and energy. But it’s coming, I promise! Distribution - Discover Southampton is published every month and distributed by local distributors to two alternating areas. In January, March etc it goes to homes in the west side of Southampton In February, April etc it goes to the east side. Each distribution is around 7,500 homes, meaning over the two month distribution we reach 15,000 homes. Advertising - We understand that the needs of a small business are quite different to those of a big company, and our advertising service is very much targeted at independent and local businesses. From advert design to general advice we are here to help you grow. For more details call Melanie 023 8026 6388 or email: melanie@discovermagazines.co.uk

WITH the Southampton Maritime Festival on the 5th and 6th May, the line-up of confirmed amazing displays, wonderful exhibitions and exciting stalls is set to make for a truly sensational day out!
Southampton Maritime Festival New additions that will be joining the S.T. Challenge, the S.S. Shieldhall and the flotilla of Dunkirk Little Ships around the Ocean Terminal include a food village of continental menus, an ice rink and an octopus inflatable play park to keep the young (and not so young) ones happy. The not so young audience might also wish to inspect the collection of steam engines of which the HMS Sultan’s Super Sentinel Steam Lorry DX 9048 is a particular master-piece of pre-petrol engineering. This is not to mention the Rolls Royce Silver Ghosts, Aston Martins, Vintage AA vehicles and other classic cars. Meanwhile, in the dry dock, remotely operated boats will be joining the ‘hard hat’ divers as they demonstrate changes in diving practices which can be compared with modern day techniques that can be seen in the Hampshire and Wight Trust for Maritime Archaeology’s Maritime Bus. And with the Lancaster bomber flyover above, you won’t know which way to look! Explore the inside of the state of the art Ocean Cruise Terminal where you will discover a globe of the ocean floor alongside stunning models from the Jubilee Sailing Trust and Medway Queen along with stories of ships that sailed the high seas. All this is nestled amongst dozens of maritime heritage exhibitors and traditional stalls. Perhaps you would like to join in the fun with the war time theme; help and advice on how to create your 1940s look is being provided, and you will be able to get the perfect 1940s style from the hair salon demonstrating in the Terminal. Throughout the day and into the evening, dozens of live performances will be provided by a wide range of music from brass bands and 1940s swing to rock bands. The day long flow of music will be interspersed with the melodic tones of choirs, sea shanties and the occasional celebratory blast from the whistles of S.S. Shieldhall and S.T. Challenge.

The Mayor’s Maritime Art Competition for under 18’s has recently been announced to provide a stage for local talent with artistic or photographic flare. Entries of artwork or photographs on the theme of the South’s maritime heritage are being called for. Southampton’s Mayor and dignitaries will judge the finalists who will have their artwork displayed in the Ocean Terminal over the Festival weekend. Winners will receive a trophy and a prize, with the overall winner having their art work made into a mural inside the Terminal itself. This event is only being made possible with the kind support of ABP Southampton who are hosting the Southampton Maritime Festival in their Ocean Cruise Terminal and with the help of Williams Shipping Holdings Ltd., the National Oceanography Centre, the AA and the Southampton City Council. The AA will be providing the road signs for the Festival so there will be no excuse to get lost. Access will be made trouble free with a park and ride service between central Southampton car parks and the docks. A regular bus service, onboard rarely released Heritage Buses, will be provided free of charge by the Southampton & District Transport Heritage Trust (www.sadtht.co.uk/main/mbr). It is a day to step into the past and see Southampton’s docklands come alive.

eXHiBitions & tHe arts soutHaMPton city art gallery uncommon ground: land art in Britain 1966 – 1979 10 May - 4 august 2013
The opening venue for the tour of Uncommon Ground; a touring exhibition from the Arts council collectio featuring work by some of the most important British artists of the last 50 years including Tony cragg, Hamish Fulton, Antony Gormley, richard Long and Anthony Mccall. In the late 1960s artists on both sides of the Atlantic turned away from the enclosed space of the gallery and went out into the landscape to forge a new form of art. This art was made in radically new ways often using earth, water, sun and even fire as raw materials, and went under several names: Land Art, earth art, process art, and conceptual art. This exhibition takes a fresh look at the art of this period and considers what was particular about the way Land Art developed in Britain.

rambles without barriers!
We ramble all over Hampshire and fringes of neighbouring counties, three or four a month in the summer and one or two in the winter, and welcome those who are mobility challenged, as well as anyone able bodied and family members. We plan rambles that are free of stiles, kissing gates and other obstructions. The New Forest, in particular, is one of our favourite destinations as well as many coastal rambles. It is a lifeline for those of us who are unable to walk very well; it means being able to get out into the countryside and offers the chance to meet new friends and see interesting places. We also campaign for better access to the countryside and work with other access groups to get difficult barriers and gates replaced.

Townhill Park House A seat of learning, a testament to timeless British architecture, a sanitary sanctuary for injured servicemen and women and, of course, a family home.
the heritage and deep history that lies behind the heavy oak doors that guard, retain and hide the identity of the house.
In its formative days, Townhill Park House was part of the original manor farm and later during the late 1700s it was converted to become a gentleman’s residence. By 1897 Townhill Park House was acquired by the ďŹ rst Lord Swaythling, Ivor Montagu for his eldest son and heir, Louis Montagu, for the impending marriage of Louis to Lady Gladys Goldsmid. On the death of his father, Louis became the second Lord Swaythling.
Townhill Park House has transcended time in numerous guises but through all has retained a certain proud and majestic heritage. The use of this grand and prestigious house has changed many times and yet unlike many of its contemporary buildings, Townhill Park House remains a building of generous proportions and designed beauty. The house itself has undergone many changes but nothing can take away

discover soutHaMPton MAy 2013 In 1911 Louis Montagu started a programme of improvement and renovation for Townhill Park House. Louis employed the eminent young architect, Leonard Rome Guthrie who oversaw improvements and renovations to the building. Louis also employed the famous garden designer and horticulturalist of the time, Gertrude Jekyll, to establish the detailed gardens, designing framed views, yew hedging, dry stone walling and the magnificent sunken garden. Together they planned, built and created the gardens that surrounded the house.
The estates were divided into lots and most were bought for housing development. However, the house and 30 acres were bought by Middlesex County Council.
home of The Gregg School Under the ownership of Middlesex County Council, the House was used as a residential boarding school for girls; the use remained unchanged until 1970. In the years from 1970-85, Townhill Park House afforded yet another use as it provided a suitable location for a hostel for Merchant Navy cadets. After the Cadets left occupation in 1984, the hostel closed and the estate ownership changed again, this time being acquired by Hampshire County Council. The House was then briefly used as a conference centre until 1994, when the expanding Gregg School acquired the house and grounds to provide a facility of education and learning. Today Townhill Park House is flourishing under the ownership of ‘The Gregg’ and is benefiting from the school’s efforts to regenerate the property to its former glory. by Addison Vincent Year 9, The Gregg School
In 1927 the house was occupied by the third Lord Swaythling, Stuart - son of Lord Louis - after his father’s death. Lord Stuart moved into the house with his wife Lady Mary. When the Second World War broke out in 1939, Lord Stuart loaned the house to the Red Cross, where it became a convalescent home for soldiers. After the war in 1948, Lord and Lady Swaythling divorced and Townhill Park House and the estates were sold.

Awbridge, Dunbridge & Mottisfont Walk Walk distance 4.2 miles A downloadable pdf of the walk and enlarged map is available online at www.discovercommunity.co.uk
Park in the lay-by adjacent to Awbridge School in Danes Road. Alternatively, park on the road side to the right of the war memorial in Lockerley Road just past the school.
Continue straight on through woodland on a gravel track. At a track crossroads, keep straight on. Cross the bridge over the railway line and bear left along a signed path with the railway to your left. Cross a footbridge over the River Dun and turn through a kissing gate. Walk through a field with woodland to your left. Cross a stile at the field boundary and keep straight on. With a cemetery on your right, follow a gravel track onto tarmac bearing left with the church on your right. Either walk though the cemetery to visit the church, or walk round the cemetery to the main road. If visiting the church, exit through the main entrance gate and turn right into the main road. At the main road, turn left into Mottisfont village. At a sharp bend in the road, follow the sign for the “Millennium Walk” along Hatt Lane. Turn left off the millennium walk metalled pathway at a footpath sign into a field.
Walk down Saunders Lane to the ‘T’ junction and turn left towards Mottisfont on the B3084. Almost immediately, turn right onto a way marked path over a stile. Cross the field diagonally towards a 5-bar gate and cross over a stile.
36
Cross the field diagonally, pass through a kissing gate and across a second field diagonally towards the road. At the road, turn left towards the level crossing and the Mill Arms public house.

discover discover soutHaMPton soutHaMPton SEPTEMBEr MAy 2012 2013 Just past the pub, turn up Russell Drive and walk into woodland. Bear right at a 5-bar gate along a gravel track. As track bears left, keep straight on down a footpath. Enter a field and cross diagonally left, following a low bank on your left. The path is not clearly defined at this point. Cross a stile into a second field and onto a farm track. Turn right and then left across the field with copse to your right and left. Head for the gap between the two woodlands in the distance as again the footpath is not clearly marked. At the right hand side of the field, cross a stile into a further field. bear left and then right along the field boundary. Go straight on to emerge onto a hilltop overlooking Carters Clay hamlet. Bear left and then right along the field boundary to emerge into Lockerley Road. Turn left into the road and walk back to Awbridge and your car.
Historical note... The lake at Awbridge Danes was excavated in the 1920s to provide work for the local unemployed, each man being paid one shilling (10p) a day and a loaf of bread. Roman occupation of the area is confirmed by tiles, pottery and coins being found at Awbridge House, dating from the late roman period of AD 307. The names Danes Road and Awbridge Danes record the presence of Danish occupation of the area, possibly from the 11th or 12th centuries. Mottisfont church is a Grade I listed building originally of 12th century origin that initially claimed pastoral responsibility for Mottisfont, Lockerley and Broughton. Its earliest parts predate Mottisfont Abbey. Among its artefacts, the church contains a 17th century clock which has no face and no pendulum. Its movement derives its energy solely from hung weights and a bell is rung on the hour. Which hour is of course anybodies guess. The modern road that runs between Awbridge, Lockerley, the Tytherleys, Broughton and the A30 was originally a turnpike {toll) road in the mid 18th century. Similarly, the short stretch of road from East Dean joining this road was also a toll road.
