Discover Southampton East May 2013

Page 1

Hello again Older generations enjoy entertaining the youngsters with stories of their world without computers and mobile phones, the first computer games, the VHS vs Beta battle and yes, I even remember music on 8 track cassettes! They claim it was a simpler world then, but technology has brought the freedom to work from home, to stay in touch with friends and family, to shop online and to find out almost anything I want to instantly - fantastic. Our Discover team, too is very much in “the cloud”; that is we have people working on the magazines remotely; Allison our designer in Derbyshire, our administrator Lauren lives in Kent and Marina, our short story illustrator, lives in Serbia. However, technology doesn’t stop us needing local tradespeople, gardeners, hairdressers, garages and – of course – someone to fix our computers when they go wrong! And that’s what this magazine is all about. A choice of services in one handy guide and two pages this month of events, for the days when you feel like interacting with the real world rather than just the virtual one! Best wishes,

Melanie

p.s My apologies for the absence of the Directory of Independent Retailers this month. With the unexpected acquisition of a local Winchester magazine and launching our 8th title Discover Winchester, I simply ran out of time, hands and energy. But it’s coming, I promise! Distribution - Discover Southampton East is published every month and distributed by your postman to two alternating areas. In January, March etc it goes to homes and businesses in SO18 postcode sectors 2, 3 & 6. In February, April etc it goes to SO18 sectors 1, 4 & 5. Each distribution is around 7, 100 homes, meaning over the two month distribution we reach 14,200 homes. Advertising - We understand that the needs of a small business are quite different to those of a big company, and our advertising service is very much targeted at independent and local businesses. From advert design to general advice we are here to help you grow. For more details call Melanie 023 8026 6388 or email: melanie@discovermagazines.co.uk

Townhill Park House A seat of learning, a testament to timeless British architecture, a sanitary sanctuary for injured servicemen and women and, of course, a family home.

the heritage and deep history that lies behind the heavy oak doors that guard, retain and hide the identity of the house.

In its formative days, Townhill Park House was part of the original manor farm and later during the late 1700s it was converted to become a gentleman’s residence. By 1897 Townhill Park House was acquired by the ďŹ rst Lord Swaythling, Ivor Montagu for his eldest son and heir, Louis Montagu, for the impending marriage of Louis to Lady Gladys Goldsmid. On the death of his father, Louis became the second Lord Swaythling.

Townhill Park House has transcended time in numerous guises but through all has retained a certain proud and majestic heritage. The use of this grand and prestigious house has changed many times and yet unlike many of its contemporary buildings, Townhill Park House remains a building of generous proportions and designed beauty. The house itself has undergone many changes but nothing can take away

DISCOvER SOUTHAMpTON EAST MAY 2013 In 1911 Louis Montagu started a programme of improvement and renovation for Townhill Park House. Louis employed the eminent young architect, Leonard Rome Guthrie who oversaw improvements and renovations to the building. Louis also employed the famous garden designer and horticulturalist of the time, Gertrude Jekyll, to establish the detailed gardens, designing framed views, yew hedging, dry stone walling and the magnificent sunken garden. Together they planned, built and created the gardens that surrounded the house.

The estates were divided into lots and most were bought for housing development. However, the house and 30 acres were bought by Middlesex County Council.

home of The Gregg School Under the ownership of Middlesex County Council, the House was used as a residential boarding school for girls; the use remained unchanged until 1970. In the years from 1970-85, Townhill Park House afforded yet another use as it provided a suitable location for a hostel for Merchant Navy cadets. After the Cadets left occupation in 1984, the hostel closed and the estate ownership changed again, this time being acquired by Hampshire County Council. The House was then briefly used as a conference centre until 1994, when the expanding Gregg School acquired the house and grounds to provide a facility of education and learning. Today Townhill Park House is flourishing under the ownership of ‘The Gregg’ and is benefiting from the school’s efforts to regenerate the property to its former glory. by Addison Vincent Year 9, The Gregg School

In 1927 the house was occupied by the third Lord Swaythling, Stuart - son of Lord Louis - after his father’s death. Lord Stuart moved into the house with his wife Lady Mary. When the Second World War broke out in 1939, Lord Stuart loaned the house to the Red Cross, where it became a convalescent home for soldiers. After the war in 1948, Lord and Lady Swaythling divorced and Townhill Park House and the estates were sold.

Veteran pilot and singer help launch World War II exhibition A veteran pilot and a singer who entertained the troops during World War II have helped launch a special exhibition, shedding new light on the New Forest’s pivotal role during the war. A treasure trove of unseen photos and stories has been unearthed from people’s attics and cupboards for display at the New Forest Remembers exhibition at the New Forest Centre in Lyndhurst.

the Exbury estate since 1912, was at the exhibition opening and said: ‘I think it’s a wonderful exhibition. I spent some time recording the people at HMS Mastodon telling their stories. I know why it’s so important to keep them. That’s why this project is such a tremendous achievement.’

The display was officially opened by Julian Johnson, chairman of the New Forest National Park Authority, and New Forest East MP Julian Lewis. The exhibition reveals how Allied servicemen based in the Forest prepared for D-Day, how German and Italian prisoners of war were kept and how local residents did their bit for the war effort. The free exhibition is part of the New Forest Remembers: untold stories of World War II Project run by the New Forest National Park Authority, and funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and ExxonMobil at the Fawley Refinery. The two-year project aims to bring the war years alive through archaeological surveys and digitally capturing the memories of those who lived through the war. Two of the special guests at the exhibition launch were veteran pilot Arthur Poore (corr) DFC and former singer Brenda Logie (corr). Mr Poore flew in several bombing raids over German cities, whilst Ms Logie entertained thousands of Allied troops stationed in the New Forest. Both have shared their photos and memories, along with dozens of others, illuminating how ordinary people lived and fought through the conflict. Ms Logie said: ‘I think it’s marvellous that they’ve got so much material together. I don’t think the younger generations know enough about this period and the stories which are jolly interesting.’ The display also includes a previously unseen diary entry from His Majesty King George VI, detailing how in the run up to the Normandy landings he paid a secret visit to the Exbury Estate which was requisitioned as a naval training base, HMS Mastodon. In a diary made available by the Royal Archives, the King revealed how he sailed down the Beaulieu River to the Solent and saw a fleet of more than 300 landing craft and ships from the deck of the command ship HMS Bulolo, just days before the start of Operation Overlord. Julian Johnson, chairman of the New Forest National Park Authority, said: ‘It never ceases to amaze me how much long-forgotten material is in people’s attics and hidden away in cupboards. So much of this material has been thrown away in the past and it is refreshing seeing so many old photographs, diaries and recorded reminiscences being exhibited. It is important that we retrieve as much of this historic information as we can and to ensure that it is kept for future generations. I am proud that the National Park Authority has been closely involved with this project.’ New Forest East MP Julian Lewis said: ‘What this exhibit has managed to achieve is bringing together local memories and records with parts of the national collection that people will normally never be able to see unless they’re a specialist researcher. What’s so particularly striking about this project is that people can continue to add their own memories and tributes long after the exhibit has finished.’ The New Forest Remembers exhibit will run at the New Forest Centre in Lyndhurst until 28 April. The exhibits will also be available online on a digital portal full of recorded interviews, photos, letters, diaries, film footage and animated 3D reconstructions. Members of the public can also add their stories and memories to the portal. For more information about the New Forest Remembers Project go to www.newforestnpa. gov.uk/wwii

Introducting Hampshire RoamAbility www.HampshireRoamAbility.co.uk IF you have a mobility scooter and the means to transport it, why not join Hampshire RoamAbility?

Rambles without barriers!

We ramble all over Hampshire and fringes of neighbouring counties, three or four a month in the summer and one or two in the winter, and welcome those who are mobility challenged, as well as anyone able bodied and family members. We plan rambles that are free of stiles, kissing gates and other obstructions. The New Forest, in particular, is one of our favourite destinations as well as many coastal rambles. It is a lifeline for those of us who are unable to walk very well; it means being able to get out into the countryside and offers the chance to meet new friends and see interesting places. We also campaign for better access to the countryside and work with other access groups to get difficult barriers and gates replaced.

If this is of interest to you, please contact The Secretary, Hampshire RoamAbility on 02380 293156 and we will be pleased to give you much more information.
