Hello again Older generations enjoy entertaining the youngsters with stories of their world without computers and mobile phones, the first computer games, the VHS vs Beta battle and yes, I even remember music on 8 track cassettes! They claim it was a simpler world then, but technology has brought the freedom to work from home, to stay in touch with friends and family, to shop online and to find out almost anything I want to instantly - fantastic. Our Discover team, too is very much in “the cloud”; that is we have people working on the magazines remotely; Allison our designer in Derbyshire, our administrator Lauren lives in Kent and Marina, our short story illustrator, lives in Serbia. However, technology doesn’t stop us needing local tradespeople, gardeners, hairdressers, garages and – of course – someone to fix our computers when they go wrong! And that’s what this magazine is all about. A choice of services in one handy guide and two pages this month of events, for the days when you feel like interacting with the real world rather than just the virtual one! Best wishes,
Melanie
p.s My apologies for the absence of the Directory of Independent Retailers this month. With the unexpected acquisition of a local Winchester magazine and launching our 8th title Discover Winchester, I simply ran out of time, hands and energy. But it’s coming, I promise! Distribution - Discover Southampton West is published every month and distributed by your postman to two alternating areas. In January, March etc it goes to homes and businesses in SO40 postcode sectors 7, 8 & 9. In February, April etc it goes to SO40 sectors 2 & 3. Each distribution is around 8,000 homes, meaning over the two month distribution we reach 16,000 homes. Advertising - We understand that the needs of a small business are quite different to those of a big company, and our advertising service is very much targeted at independent and local businesses. Views sought on preserving the character of Ashurst and Colbury LINKS to 13th century monks, a speech from a future prime minister at the local railway station, and a hospital for wounded soldiers are part of the fascinating village facts unearthed by Ashurst and Colbury residents in the New Forest. Now residents working with the New Forest National Park Authority are asking people for their views on a draft Village Design Statement which they hope will help keep the character of their parish special. The Statement has taken two years to produce in consultation with local residents and has been prepared by a steering group from the local community which is keen to ensure that the design of any new development in the parish respects the distinctive local character of the area.
When the National Park Authority planning committee considers any applications for the area, the Statement will provide them with more detailed design guidance as a supplement to the Authority’s planning policies. Pat Wyeth, Chair of the New Forest National Park Authority planning committee said: ‘A great deal of work has gone into the preparation of this document and it shows how important the area’s character is to the local community.’ People are asked to give their views on the draft Ashurst and Colbury Village Design Statement during a six-week public consultation which starts on Monday 25 March. You can view the VDS on the National Park Authority website and download a consultation
form at www.newforestnpa. gov.uk Please send your completed response form to: Policy Team, New Forest National Park Authority, Town Hall, Avenue Road, Lymington, SO41 9ZG; or policy@newforestnpa.gov.uk. All comments will be made publically available. The closing date for the consultation is 5pm on Monday 6 May 2013. The draft Ashurst and Colbury VDS will then go to the full National Park Authority meeting on 27 June 2013 to be considered for formal adoption.
Have your say and help shape the New Forest landscape
THE landscape of the New Forest National Park is a mosaic of ancient and ornamental woodland, heaths, rivers and valley mires, a coastline of mudflats and saltmarshes and pretty historic villages; it is also the most densely populated national park in England. To help protect this landscape the New Forest National Park Authority has worked with a host of Forest organisations to create a Landscape Action Plan, which sets out proposals on how look after its landscape, conserve its history and wildlife and help plan for its future, alongside the Landscape Character Assessment that identifies its special qualities. The plans look at key themes that may affect the New Forest landscape and suggests ways of managing them. Issues such as conserving tranquillity and dark night skies, flooding and drought and invasive pests and diseases are looked at, as well as the impact the modern world; such as how a growing population could affect the landscape of the Forest. The plans also look at what has defined the historic character of the New Forest landscapes and villages, in order to better preserve their qualities, and the features that make them unique. You can view the Landscape Action Plan and Landscape Character Assessment on the National Park Authority website and download a consultation form at www.newforestnpa.gov.uk/consultations. Please send your completed response form to: Landscape Action Plan, New Forest National Park Authority, Town Hall, Avenue Road, Lymington, SO41 9ZG; or email landscape@newforestnpa.gov.uk. The closing date for the consultation is 5pm on Monday 6 May 2013. The draft Landscape Action Plan and Landscape Character Assessment will then go to the full National Park Authority meeting on 27 June 2013 to be considered for formal adoption.

Professional Tree Surgery & Hedge Trimming Sound advice from Josh Laurence of J L Tree Care IT is the time of year when we turn our attention once more to our gardens and trees. But does your tree have a TPO? WHAT IS A TREE PRESERVATION ORDER? Tree Preservation Orders , also known Josh laurence of J.l Tree Care as TPO’s were introduced in the late 1940s to enable Local Planning Authorities to protect important trees. TPOs can be made on single trees, groups of trees, areas of trees or whole woodlands. TPOs are commonly imposed on trees in cities and towns. TPO laws prohibit the cutting down, uprooting, topping, lopping, wilful damage or wilful destruction of trees without prior consent from your Local Planning Authority. WHY YOU SHOULD CHECK IF YOUR TREE HAS A TPO? It is an offence to prune or fell TPO or Conservation Area protected trees without first notifying or seeking consent from the appropriate Local Authority. Therefore if you are unsure if your tree has a TPO or if you are living in a Conservation Area, always check first with your local council. Pruning or cutting down protected trees without prior consent can result in prosecution and a maximum fine of £20,000 for each offence.
within 6-8 weeks, informing you what work is permitted or not. A good Arborist will guide you through the process of TPO applications, advising on the correct terms and tree surgery methods required, increasing the likelihood of you receiving prompt permission from your local authority. CHOOSING A PROFESSIONAL TREE SURGEON Tree surgery is a highly skilled and dangerous operation, don’t be tempted to do the work yourself, invest in employing a professional Arborist (Tree Surgeon). Ensure you choose an experienced and insured contractor that is fully qualified in Arboriculture, holding a NPTC (National Proficiency Test Council Certificate). You could even ask to see the Contractors NPTC card which is proof of competency in a range of skills, including the safe use of chainsaws, chippers, stump grinders, tree climbing and aerial rescue. Choosing a Tree Surgeon wisely will result in your trees being safely and expertly kept in top condition.
Josh Laurence, J.L Tree Care ‘Professional Tree Surgery & Hedge Trimming’ Tel: 02380 862975 / 07919886166
WHAT TO DO IF YOUR TREE DOES HAVE A TPO? Don’t despair, you can usually still carry out work to your tree as long as you first submit a written application to the Authority. These application forms, along with helpful guides are found on your local council’s websites. After you have submitted your application the council will view the tree and make a decision

Veteran pilot and singer help launch World War II exhibition A veteran pilot and a singer who entertained the troops during World War II have helped launch a special exhibition, shedding new light on the New Forest’s pivotal role during the war. A treasure trove of unseen photos and stories has been unearthed from people’s attics and cupboards for display at the New Forest Remembers exhibition at the New Forest Centre in Lyndhurst.

the Exbury estate since 1912, was at the exhibition opening and said: ‘I think it’s a wonderful exhibition. I spent some time recording the people at HMS Mastodon telling their stories. I know why it’s so important to keep them. That’s why this project is such a tremendous achievement.’
The display was officially opened by Julian Johnson, chairman of the New Forest National Park Authority, and New Forest East MP Julian Lewis. The exhibition reveals how Allied servicemen based in the Forest prepared for D-Day, how German and Italian prisoners of war were kept and how local residents did their bit for the war effort. The free exhibition is part of the New Forest Remembers: untold stories of World War II Project run by the New Forest National Park Authority, and funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and ExxonMobil at the Fawley Refinery. The two-year project aims to bring the war years alive through archaeological surveys and digitally capturing the memories of those who lived through the war. Two of the special guests at the exhibition launch were veteran pilot Arthur Poore (corr) DFC and former singer Brenda Logie (corr). Mr Poore flew in several bombing raids over German cities, whilst Ms Logie entertained thousands of Allied troops stationed in the New Forest. Both have shared their photos and memories, along with dozens of others, illuminating how ordinary people lived and fought through the conflict. Ms Logie said: ‘I think it’s marvellous that they’ve got so much material together. I don’t think the younger generations know enough about this period and the stories which are jolly interesting.’ The display also includes a previously unseen diary entry from His Majesty King George VI, detailing how in the run up to the Normandy landings he paid a secret visit to the Exbury Estate which was requisitioned as a naval training base, HMS Mastodon. In a diary made available by the Royal Archives, the King revealed how he sailed down the Beaulieu River to the Solent and saw a fleet of more than 300 landing craft and ships from the deck of the command ship HMS Bulolo, just days before the start of Operation Overlord. Nicholas de Rothschild, whose family have lived at
Enjoying the exhibition at the New Forest Centre
Julian Johnson, chairman of the New Forest National Park Authority, said: ‘It never ceases to amaze me how much long-forgotten material is in people’s attics and hidden away in cupboards. So much of this material has been thrown away in the past and it is refreshing seeing so many old photographs, diaries and recorded reminiscences being exhibited. It is important that we retrieve as much of this historic information as we can and to ensure that it is kept for future generations. I am proud that the National Park Authority has been closely involved with this project.’ New Forest East MP Julian Lewis said: ‘What this exhibit has managed to achieve is bringing together local memories and records with parts of the national collection that people will normally never be able to see unless they’re a specialist researcher. What’s so particularly striking about this project is that people can continue to add their own memories and tributes long after the exhibit has finished.’ The New Forest Remembers exhibit will run at the New Forest Centre in Lyndhurst until 28 April. The exhibits will also be available online on a digital portal full of recorded interviews, photos, letters, diaries, film footage and animated 3D reconstructions. Members of the public can also add their stories and memories to the portal. For more information about the New Forest Remembers Project go to www.newforestnpa. gov.uk/wwii

Rambles without barriers!
We ramble all over Hampshire and fringes of neighbouring counties, three or four a month in the summer and one or two in the winter, and welcome those who are mobility challenged, as well as anyone able bodied and family members. We plan rambles that are free of stiles, kissing gates and other obstructions. The New Forest, in particular, is one of our favourite destinations as well as many coastal rambles. It is a lifeline for those of us who are unable to walk very well; it means being able to get out into the countryside and offers the chance to meet new friends and see interesting places. We also campaign for better access to the countryside and work with other access groups to get difficult barriers and gates replaced.

If this is of interest to you, please contact The Secretary, Hampshire RoamAbility on 02380 293156 and we will be pleased to give you much more information.
