Discover Totton March 2013

Page 1

Hello again I'm not surprised, but I am disappointed by the recent demise of stores like Comet and HMV which is blamed on shoppers choosing to buy white goods and music online (or not buy at all but download for free – illegally). These stories hit our newspapers and TV channels but little is reported on the independent retailers that are also suffering similar fates such as the hardware store, Holt’s in Water Lane. The advantages of the internet are known but independent retailers deserve to be supported. In many cases their products are better value but you just don’t know that until you shop there, not to mention the personal service. But I believe retailers could do more to help themselves with innovative promotional ideas, creative window displays, e-marketing and in some cases modernisation. Discover Totton is all about connecting the local community to local businesses and services and retail is very much part of that. So we are planning an new feature for inclusion in the magazine. Directory of Independent Retailers In your next issue you’ll see a new directory of shops in and around Southampton and local high streets. If you are a retailer, please contact me for details and look out for details in the post or by email. Or better still visit www.discover magazines.co.uk and apply online to be included. Please support your local businesses. You’ll be sorry when they’ve gone.

DISCOVER MOTHER’S DAy

Don’t forget to Treat Mum this Mother’s Day During the sixteenth century, people returned to their mother church, for a service to be held on Laetare Sunday. Anyone who did this was commonly said to have gone "a-mothering", although whether this preceded the term Mothering Sunday is unclear. In later times, Mothering Sunday became a day when domestic servants were given a day off to visit their mother church. It was often the only time that whole families could gather together, since on other days they were prevented by conflicting working hours. Eventually, the religious tradition evolved into the Mothering Sunday secular tradition of giving gifts to mother. People started celebrating Mother's Day, but on the same day that Mothering Sunday was celebrated, the fourth Sunday in Lent. The two celebrations have now been mixed up, and many people think that they are the same thing. However, Mother’s Day, rather than Mothering Sunday, is an American invention when, in 1908, Anna Jarvis held a memorial for her mother and succeeded making it recognised holiday in 1914 in US.

don’t lose those precious memories by Widenet Computer Services Ltd • 01794 521100

it used to be that the data held on our computers was fairly unimportant. if a disaster occurred and our hard disk failed or was wiped out by a virus, then we normally had a ‘hard copy’ or could recreate our address book and it didn’t matter that much. Today though things are very different and the majority of us have a great deal more to lose should the worst happen and our letters, photos, e-mails and music library were to disappear. It is often the case that our data is more valuable than the hardware it resides upon – we can purchase a new laptop or desktop computer for a few hundred pounds but our data (particularly for businesses) and memories are quite simply priceless. Although we will probably never be 100% secure against data loss, we can certainly minimise the risk by being disciplined enough to keep our files in well-ordered and maintained folders and by making sure that we back them up. Some people sign up for low cost or ‘free with your broadband’ data backup facilities. All well and good but did you know that many of these services offer limited recovery, with no ability to roll back to previous file versions if corruption or deletion occurs. Think about that for a moment – you might have been backing up your files online for months but then your computer and files get corrupted and the backup simply backs up the corruption for you. Online data backup is a good way to help protect yourself but you need to choose the right kind of package to ensure maximum protection. CD’s and DVD’s have a limited life, USB sticks and external drives can fail as well. The answer is probably to spread the risk and maximise the chances of recovery by backing up and then backing up your backup! If you are worried about the implications of losing your data then why not talk to one of the Widenet team. We can’t give you a 100% guarantee that you will never lose another file again but we can give you impartial and practical advice to at least reduce the risk. If the worst comes to the worst though, we would send your failed drive away to our specialist partners who can retrieve a lot of the data by disassembling the drive. But prevention is a lot less expensive than cure and a little bit of safeguarding could save a lot of worry and heartache.

DISCOvER HERITAGE

Air Raid Shelter Alert do you have something of historical interest in your rear garden ? Totton Councillor, David Harrison, is asking everyone in the town to notify him of the presence of any remaining World War II Air Raid Shelters. The concrete structures were quite a familiar feature, to be found in many rear gardens back in the 1950's and 60's. However, over the years, most have been demolished. Councillor Harrison wants a record kept of any remaining ones with a view to preserving at least some of them for future generations to see.

A now demolished WWII shelter photographed in Totton

He says “During the war, my Father slept overnight in one of these shelters. On emerging the next morning, he found that his home had been completely demolished by a German bomb. All he had left was blankets and the clothes he was wearing. The remaining shelters left today are increasingly important as part of our heritage.” Contact Councillor Harrison by telephone number 02380 864500, e-mail : dharrison100@aol.com or Facebook Page ‘Councillor David Harrison’.

DISCOVER HAMpSHIRE WALKS

Horsebridge & Kings Sombourne Walk distance 4.7 miles A downloadable pdf of the walk and enlarged map is available online at www.discovercommunity.co.uk

Historical note... Horsebridge is situated on the old ‘Sprat & Winkle’ railway line that ran from Andover to Kimbridge junction in the south. Royal Assent was granted in July 1858 for the line to be built by converting a canal built earlier in 1792. The route was to run parallel to the rivers Test and Anton. A 14-gun salute celebrated the cutting of the first sod by Lord Palmerston in a field near his home at Broadlands, Romsey. The line opened to traffic in 1865 but was not a commercial success, closing in 1964. The name Kings Sombourne is probably derived from Saxon times in that the area was a ‘kings’ possession. Sombourne relates to a stream associated with pigs. Remains of large stone buildings to the south of the churchyard are presumed to be the remains of a Saxon royal palace. The Doomsday book records the village as Sombourne Regis.

Horsebridge is situated just a short distance away from the main A3057 Romsey to Stockbridge road South West of Kings Sombourne. On entering the hamlet, park on the grass verge at opposite the junction with the Broughton road, by the John O’Gaunt pub (SO20 6PU). Alternatively, turn into the Broughton Road and turn left opposite the pub onto a gravel track leading to the ‘Test Way’ public car park.. Walk along the road in the direction of Romsey. Follow the road as it bends around a large barn on your left and at the end of the barn turn left onto a signed bridleway. Climb slowly uphill along the boundary between two fields. At the top of the rise, pass to the right of a farm gate and emerge onto the main A3057 road. Cross the road diagonally left onto a lay-by. At the left hand side of a metal farm gate join a footpath running parallel to the main road. Continue straight ahead following the left hand fence-line heading towards Kings Sombourne. Emerge into Palace Close and walk along the road straight ahead to a ‘T’ junction. Turn left along the road then walk through a cut-way into a close. Follow the road left to another ‘T’ junction. Turn right then left onto Furzedown Road. Walk down this road then turn right along the road signposted to the Sombournes. With Nutchers Drove opposite, cross the footbridge over a stream and turn left back towards the main A3057. As you near the main road, turn right to reach the main road. Cross the road and into Cow Drove Hill road. Walk uphill to a bungalow on your right named ‘Sunrise’. Turn left up some wooden steps onto the signed Clarendon Way. Turn right and walk uphill following the field right-hand boundary. Near the top of the hill, emerge onto a metalled lane and turn left. Walk along the lane ignoring the path joining from your left. As the lane bears right, continue straight ahead along a tarmac and gravel track. At a crossing of tracks, continue straight ahead along a signed ‘Private Road’. Continue along the track as it passes through water meadows and over the various branches of the River Test. Walk to the left of a metal gate to emerge onto a road. Turn left and walk along the roadside verge ignoring the Clarendon Way turning on your right. Walk past Faithfulls Drove on your right to a ‘T’ junction. Turn right onto the Dunbridge road. Continue along the road past the Broughton turning on your right. Pass the shared entrance drive to Bossington Estate and its attendant lodge house on your left and the entrance lane to St James’ Church. As you reach some farm cottages on your right, turn left onto a signed track crossing the road and walk between two fields. Continue along the remains of this Roman Road that at onetime ran from Sarum to Winchester. Continue along this path as it crosses over the various branches of the river once more. At a stile, cross into a field. The path here is indistinct, but walk straight across the centre of the field bearing slightly diagonally left towards a hedgerow. Cross a stile to join the track bed of the redundant railway. Turn left and pass Horsebridge station to your right. At a fork in the path, bear left to continue along the track bed passing once more over the river. On joining the road, turn right to rejoin your car.
