Hello Residents It’s good to give; whether it’s your time or money or both as there is always someone less fortunate than us. I’ve been struck this month by the number of letters and emails I’ve had from local charities with updates on their appeals or asking to promote an event in the magazine free of charge (which I do willingly). So I’ve dedicated quite a few community pages to these charitable causes not least my plea for sponsorship to complete the Great South Run this month in aid of the Red & White Appeal (I confess, I had a few too many glasses of wine at a function and won the bid for the place much to my husband’s amusement). It’s a long shot but if every household who receives this magazine (15,500 homes) donates even just £1 on my Virgin MoneyGiving page that would be £15,500 ! (see pg 4) As a last follow up to the Olympics I’ve researched where you can take up on a few of the less promoted sports (see pg 24). My daughter has joined the college

sailing club on the back of the exposure sailing got on tv and our local doctor, who was a Games Maker for two weeks, has taken up archery with his daughter so let’s hope all that money and effort spent on the games leaves a positive legacy after all. I should get her to Eling Sailing Club to try out those new dinghies thanks to a government grant awarded this summer (see pg 18). Next issue will be out late November no doubt with a Christmas theme – cripes!

Cheers

A big slice of support from leukaemia patient & husband

Gill and Ray with their £1,000 cake!

In 2002, Gill Adkins, 53 found that the glands in her neck were swollen and showing no signs of going down. After a visit to her GP she was tested and found to have leukaemia cells. After many difficult years of treatment, recurrences and remissions, Gill, in April this year underwent a Bone Marrow Transplant in Southampton Hospital. Living in Christchurch, she will have to make regular return visits to the hospital, twice a week for check-ups.

Southampton Hospital Charity’s Red & White Appeal aims to raise £1.76million to create a dedicated day treatment unit for patients like Gill. When Gill and husband Ray found out about the Red & White Appeal they were keen to help, having experienced first-hand the need for a new treatment area to enhance patient care. Husband Ray said, “We found out that ward sister Yvonne Lo and the team regularly sell home-made cakes and biscuits to raise money for the appeal and decided to make a bid for a particularly tasty cake.” Reflecting on her treatment so far, Gill said, “I will be eternally grateful for the help, encouragement and high level of professional treatment that I’ve received from all of the team at Southampton. Our donation is just a small token of our appreciation. I just really like home-made cakes!” To find out more or to make a donation to the Red & White Appeal please call 023 8079 8881 or visit www.redandwhiteappeal.org

Would you sponsor me for £1? It’s nearly 10 years since I ran 10 miles but I couldn’t turn down the opportunity to help raise the remaining £300,000 of Southampton Hospital’s Red & White Appeal by running the Great South Run in October.

Just finished! After a half marathon in 2004.

I publish your Discover Totton magazine and if every house that gets a copy donates just £1, I’d raise £15,500! Wouldn’t that be fantastic? Please help and visit http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/DiscoverSouthampton and make a small donation to this worthy cause. Thank you.

Lahna’s Fund reaches £20,000 milestone SInCe the last Discover Totton issue was published, we’re proud to report that Asda Totton’s Charity Token Scheme awarded £200 for The Lahna Appeal and a cheque was presented in August to natasha Ings and Lance Beatty by ASDA community colleague Julie Motherwell. Lahna’s Fund was created in Summer 2009 in memory of Lahna Beatty. Little Lahna tragically died suddenly and unexpectedly at five months old, from heart failure caused by two viruses, one being the common cold. Lahna’s parents Lance and Natasha along with their friends, family and local supporters have organised numerous fundraising activities and raised over £20,000 to date. Community First New Forest ...building relationships, enabling action! Could you use a team of willing volunteers to give your organisation a boost? Totton & Eling Carnival Committee held its first Royal Pageant and Crowning ceremony at the Totton Sports Club on Sunday, 27th May. Over 80 people, mostly family and friends of the 18 selected entries attended the Royal Pageant and watched Casey Natt, aged 21, become Totton and Eling Carnival Queen 2012. Casey’s two Princesses are Emma Harbottle, chosen from the 12-15 year old category along with Jessica Tillyer from the 8-11 year old category. Michael Johnstone, aged 11 years was chosen as the Totton & Eling Carnival Prince. All the winners were chosen by a panel of judges who scored each of them on the answers they gave to a series of questions they were asked and one was picked from each of the four categories. Organiser, Blanche Moore, said all of the entries were winners; “it was a very difficult decision to make, this year we decided to have four in the royalty party. As this is the Jubilee year, the committee decided that the royalty party needed a Prince as well as the Queen & two Princesses.”

DISCOVER HISTORy

Suited & Booted A snapshot of pre-war Southampton OTTeRBOuRne resident Duncan Holley, has been collecting memorabilia and photos of Southampton FC for 40 odd years. This has been done by going to post-card fairs, internet, agencies etc - all the usual places - but also spending many hours driving around the country visiting old players and their families to beg, steal or borrow their photographs or take photos of their medals and caps.

Most of us are fascinated to see images from so many years ago whether football related or not. Every single man in the crowd (it would be easier to find the eponymous character in Where’s Wally, than to spot a woman in this crowd) is wearing a white shirt, a tie, a jacket and a hat. Many are smoking cigarettes or pipes. And it’s unlikely that any of them are still alive today.

The club gave him official historian status in 1998 which was a great help when resourcing these photos and the club's history but still, sometimes he had to pay up to £300 to acquire an image. As the club's post war history had already been comprehensively covered by Duncan’s previous book "In that Number" in 2003, he thought it was time to do something for the pre-war period and so he has released “Suited and Booted”. Because the history was comparatively ancient (no one alive who remembers it) he had to include a potted abridged script to accompany the photos, but he realised it would be the photos that would make the book attractive as you can see above.

makes this beautifully illustrated and designed book a must-have for Southampton supporters, especially with the team’s higher profile now they have returned to the Premier League.

12

But of course it’s the history of the club itself that

Local centre offers hearing hope for British Troops leading Hampshire A hearing centre has joined a scheme run in conjunction with Help for Heroes to offer free, state-of-the art hearing instruments to veteran British Servicemen and women who have been discharged from the army due to damaged hearing in recent conflicts. The Hampshire Hearing Centre, which is part of the Association of Independent Hearing Healthcare Professionals (AIHHP), has teamed up with the charity and Phonak, the world’s leading manufacturer of hearing instruments, to help those who have suffered a hearing impairment in Britain’s current conflicts and have been discharged as a result. Former troops who have served in recent conflicts and fit the above criteria will be eligible to benefit from this scheme. As well as a choice of cutting edge hearing instruments, eligible veteran Servicemen and women will be given freeinstrument fitting and a series of follow up appointments from members of AIHHP.

14

The 9,500 British troops currently stationed in Afghanistan are regularly exposed to the blast of guns or ‘medium’ explosions measuring 140 decibels (dB) – far exceeding the noise level of 85 dB at which hearing damage can occur. As a result of this noise exposure, troops are at a high risk of suffering severe and even permanent hearing damage. Head of Welfare at Help for Heroes, Kathy Knell MBE said: “The new partnership with Phonak and AIHHP is a very positive step which will help a lot of returning troops. Addressing hearing loss gives people the ability and confidence to hear clearly and improve their overall quality of life.” Mr Gary Whettingsteel from the Hampshire Hearing Centre in Chandlers Ford said: “It is a privilege to have this opportunity to make a positive impact on the lives of our brave Service men and women and we welcome them to our centre.” For more detailsabout the programme, please visit www.hearingadvisor.co.uk or www.aihhp.org

DISCOVER SHORT STORy

Things that go bump in…Totton AS we approach Halloween, it would seem like an appropriate time to explore a strange and mysterious piece of local history that has passed into folklore. This intriguing 300 year old story, based around Testwood House, has all the elements of an episode of Midsomer Murders, which has lead to it being featured in a number of well-known ghostly publications, including The A-Z of British Ghosts, Haunted Places in Hampshire and Haunted Southampton. Originally built in the fifteenth century, the property, which at the time was known as Little Testwood House, was a hunting lodge and was reportedly frequented by Royalty. The house, situated just off of Salisbury Road, has had a rich and varied past having also been used as a private residence, a club and more recently has been let to local business. So the story goes…some time back in the eighteenth century the resident cook was tragically murdered in the servants’ quarters at the property, possibly as a part of a love triangle. The killer was a male member of staff – most likely a coachman or butler. The body was subsequently dragged down the driveway, across Salisbury Road and disposed of in nearby Cooks Lane. Although there appears to be no factual record of this event, other than local folklore, it is likely that there is some basis for the story for it to have survived for such a

16

long time. Furthermore, there may be other evidence in support of this event, things that may keep you awake at night, so read on if you dare… Among the strange goings on in Testwood House are the frequent reports of the unmistakable sound of a coach and horses in the drive way at night.

with his head tilted back, as if laughing. On this occasion the person made a drawing of what she had witnessed and, with no prior knowledge of the previous reports, apparently drew a tall man, with top hat and cape. The image was consistent with those previously reported; a spooky coincidence? In addition to the sightings of the strange figure with top hat and cape, there have also been sightings of a female figure in the loft bedroom window, when there were no women in the building. With each sighting there was a report of a terrible chilling atmosphere too, something synonymous with ghost stories.

Furthermore, on more than one occasion, the caretaker has noted hearing heavy footsteps in the property, that sound as if someone or something is walking on bare floorboards – when the premises is in fact carpeted. More eerie still, a man who appeared to be trying to enter the building was spotted – yet vanished into thin air when challenged. Another report was of a man that appeared silently beside the chef, but then again disappeared as soon as the chef saw him. The same chef made another sighting, this time of the same man but approaching the front of the house at night. His description was of a tall man wearing a top hat with a long coat and cape. A few years later, a ghostly figure was once again sighted, sitting in the reception of the building

Were these mysterious hauntings some sort of link to the murder? They certainly have the elements of a of a real life horror movie! Perhaps the man in the top hat is the murderer whose soul is unable to rest; the sound of the coach a reference to his role as coachman? Was the female apparition the face of the poor victim of this terrible crime, cursed to relive the fateful night over and over? The terrible cold, the hauntings of the chef, are these all a figment of the imagination or perhaps the restless spirits of those involved? One thing is for sure; if you get trick-or-treaters coming to the door this Halloween, keep one eye out for the any that are wearing a top hat and cape – as he may be after something more than just sweets…Don’t have nightmares!

DISCOVER BUSINESS

Sexism in the Workplace by Alan Price Peninsula Group Director

££ £

£

IT may seem old fashioned but sexism in the workplace is still an issue that needs to be addressed. Acts of sexism are liable to be punished under the equality Act 2010, legislation put in place to clamp down on any form of sexist discrimination in workplace. The most common form of sexism in the workplace is whereby a member of one sex is treated less favourably than a member of the other sex simply due to their gender; this is known as direct discrimination. Indirect discrimination occurs where a rule or criterion in a workplace puts a particular gender at a disadvantage. Peninsula Business Services state that sexual harassment is the most frequently occurring type of sexist discrimination, with many people not realising the possible consequences to what they think of as a joke. Said consequences can take the form of a sex discrimination claim thus Peninsula Business Services state that it is essential to create a workplace in which it is clear that such behaviour will not be tolerated and that any abuse of anti-discrimination policy will be consistently punished. The procedure for reporting harassment is set out by Peninsula whereby an employee should raise a grievance which would need to be dealt with under an organisations grievance procedure or personal harassment procedure where there is one. It is important to note that where a sex discrimination claim is made to a tribunal, there is no upper cap on the amount of compensation that can be awarded for a successful claim. Under the vicarious liability provisions, where an employer cannot show that it took measures to ensure discrimination does not occur in their workplace, the employer will also be held responsible for compensation for discrimination in respect of a matter of which he had no control or knowledge. For more information on sexism in the workplace please contact Peninsula’s 24/7 Advice Service on 0844 892 2772.

A message

from your local Councillor RePReSenTATIveS from Marchwood Parish Council and Hampshire County Councillor David Harrison, met with Simon Barker, Managing Director of Longdown Management Ltd, representing the Barker Mill estates, today to discuss plans for building a safe pedestrian and cycle route that will link the village to Totton. The meeting had a positive outcome with the agreed preferred route being one that runs off road, close and adjacent to Bury Road. Mr Barnes has agreed to ask the Barker Mill Trust to release the land so that construction of the cycle route can proceed. Marchwood Parish Council will liaise with various utility companies who have cables and pipes running under the ground. There is also likely to be some technical engineering solutions required to overcome the problem of an area of land on the route that is often flooded. It was suggested that

26

the locally based military engineers be asked to help overcome this. The quarry operators are going to be asked if they will supply the necessary aggregate and loan of machinery needed for construction. Funding is likely to come from a variety of sources, including some commercial sponsorship. Speaking after the meeting, County Councillor David Harrison said “It was a productive meeting and I am encouraged, but still a bit daunted by the challenges that we face. If we can pull this off, it will be a great example joint working towards a positive outcome. All the surveys I have carried out confirm that Marchwood residents would greatly value a safe pedestrian and cycle route.”

Testwood Walk

Historical note... The 150 acre Testwood Lakes site was formed by gravel extraction in the 1980’s and 90’s. It now forms a working reservoir for water supplies to parts of Southampton, Totton and the Isle of Wight. The site is managed as a Nature Reserve. During gravel extraction, part of a Bronze Age boat was found dating from around 1500BC.

Walk Distance 4.6 miles From the A326 Ower to Totton road, turn left on the roundabout into the Calmore Industrial Estate. Follow the road through the estate and soon after it bears right, look for a concrete drive on the left signed as ‘Testwood Lakes Nature Reserve’. Turn left into the reserve and follow the road around to a gravel car park. From the car park, bear right along a gravel track following the edge of Testwood Lake. At a ‘T’ junction of paths, turn left to walk between the two lakes. At a fork in the path, turn left and go through a kissing gate to follow the left hand lakeside.

Go past a metal gate. A few yards further on is a second gate into Test Valley Angling Club’s fishing lake. Turn right onto the footpath entering woodland then turn immediately left. Walk a short distance through the woods then pass a wooden barrier to emerge into a field. Walk across the field keeping the boundary fence to your right. At the end of the fence, Testwood School Playing Field is diagonally right. Turn left along the fence line, this time keeping the fence to your left.

through the reserve. Leave the reserve through a metal gate, cross a bridge then turn right along a track. On reaching the Southampton to Salisbury railway line, do not cross the tracks, but turn left through a kissing gate to walk along the trackside footpath signed as the TestWay. Follow the hedge bordered path alongside of the rail track. Go past a wooden barrier and follow the path as it bears left away from the railway line.

At a fork in the path, bear right to leave the lake and go through a kissing gate. Cross over the bridge.

Go through a wooden gate to emerge onto a lane.

Ignore the stile on the right, keep straight ahead along a narrow path with wire fences either side. As the path opens out to a track, turn right across a stile to enter a meadow. Follow the grass path diagonally right through the field following the red topped marker posts. Cross a stile and the bridge to cross the river once more. Keep straight ahead through woodland to reach a road through the industrial estate. Cross the road onto the pavement opposite and turn left. Walk to the end of the road ignoring the turning into Sunset Business Park.

Turn left along lane. Continue past the road joining from the right following the road signed as Mill Lane to its extremity at Nursling Mill. The path meanders through scrub land to a kissing gate. Go through the gate onto a track and turn left. Go past a metal gate to follow the track right then left past a brick tower. Cross the bridges over the mill race and river then turn left through a kissing gate to enter the Lower Test Nature Reserve. Follow the path along the boardwalk as it meanders

As the lane turns right to enter Nursling Mill, cross the stile straight ahead onto a gravel track. Follow the track as it bears right across a bridge then keep straight on following part of your outward journey back to Testwood Lakes. At a ‘T’ junction of gravel paths at the lakeside, turn right and follow the footpath right around the lake to arrive back at the car park and your car.

Thanks to local resident Mrs J Brace for this walk. We were pleased to donate to her requested charity for this feature. If you have anything you’d like to contribute you could raise money for your charity of choice, too. Email it to melanie@discovermagazines.co.uk
