Baking...or just cooking? I’m not much of a TV watcher as I rarely find anything that really grabs my attention. However I’ve recently found two programs that have me hooked. The first is The Great British Bake Off. I’m a newcomer to it having only caught the final three episodes of the previous series. But when the current series started, I was there, as were over 7 million other armchair critics. It’s clearly caught the country’s imagination, and one of our advertisers Cakecraft (page 39) who supply a wonderful range of baking tools, are seeing a significant upturn in the number of people coming through their doors, wanting to join in the fun. The second program couldn’t be more different: it’s Breaking Bad. This is no Cath Kidston, flowery (or floury) aprons set. Rather it’s shocking, nervewracking, at times harrowing and completely compelling. It’s a show which the expression ‘Binge TV’ is made for, although it’s quite definitely not family viewing. If you’ve seen Breaking Bad by the way, you could say that it does have something in common with The Great British Bake Off …they’re both about cooking. Hah! Student Success Congratulations to Barton Peveril Sixth Form College students on their excellent results announced in August (see page 27). My son goes there so I am a bit biased, but I think it’s an excellent college not only for their academic success and lovely campus, but also for their nurturing of the students’ personalities. As us ‘grown-ups’ know, good grades alone are not enough to make you excel in the real world. Barton has some open evenings for students in October, and also have a range of evening courses for adults about to start. As diverse as learning Japanese or Tap Dancing!

GARDENING
A Fresh Look at Conifers By Pippa Greenwood All year round colour in your garden
As the planting season is very much upon us, it is time to take a fresh look at conifers, they’re a lot more versatile and considerably more attractive than you may have realised, and a great way to add colour, texture and living sculpture to your garden 365 days of the year.
Yes, these evergreen plants have great garden potential so take a look at some of the great ways that conifers can be used in gardens, with several hundred different cultivars of conifer to choose from in the UK, there really is one to suit every situation!
Dwarf Conifers There are lots of conifers which really are dwarf, and reach a maximum height of 1m (3ft). These are obviously particularly useful for small gardens and backyards and will often add a great extra dimension to a rock garden or a small-scale border. They may need an occasional trimming, but generally hold their shape well. Recommended: Picea abies ‘Little Gem’, Chamaecyparis lawsoniana ‘Gnome’ , Chamaecyparis lawsoniana ‘Minima Aurea’, Cryptomeria japonica ‘Vilmoriniana’, Picea abies ‘Nidiformis’
Tall and Narrow Blessed with serious style many of the columnar or tall, slim conifers look especially stunning when used to create a screen, or to add height to a mixed border or a shrub 6
border. Being rather like a living sculpture they are also good grown as a single specimen tree in a lawn. Use these as a splendid evergreen focal point at the end of a path. Recommended: Taxus baccata ‘Fastigiata Aurea’, Juniperus scopulorum ‘Skyrocket’, Thuja plicata ‘Fastigiata’.
Pyramid-shaped Conifers With their relatively wide bases and narrow tops, pyramidal conifers can bring welcome shape, texture and evergreen colour to your garden and look lovely grown as a single, specimen tree in the lawn, and are often useful if carefully positioned to hide an eyesore. Recommended: Picea albertiana ‘Conica’, Chamaecyparis lawsoniana ‘Yvonne’ or Thymus occidentalis ‘Yellow Ribbon’
Spherical Conifers With their prominently rounded shape these conifers naturally produce a sculptured look and are perfect for growing either side of a gateway or house entrance. They also look stunning in a mixed border, adding colour, texture and interest when many of the other border ingredients are below ground.
Recommended: Chamaecyparis pisifera ‘Sunset’, Chamaecyparis lawsoniana ‘Minima Glauca’, Thuja occidentalis ‘Danice’
to bring structure, texture and offseason colour, or a backdrop for the flowers of other plants in the container.
Ground-Cover Conifers
Recommended: Juniperus compressa ‘Compressa’, Chamaecyparis lawsoniana ‘Ellwood’s Gold’, Cryptomeria japonica ‘Sekkan-Sugi’ , Chamaecyparis lawsoniana ‘Springtime’, Pinus leucodermis ‘Schmidtii’
Ground cover is great for hiding low-lying eyesores, such as manhole covers an evergreen groundcover hides them all year long. Low growing conifers also work well for covering steep slopes and edging paths and beds. They will help to keep weeds at bay and are extremely low maintenance. Recommended: Juniperus squamata ‘Blue Coat’, Juniperus conferata, Juniperus communis ‘Compressa’.
Conifers for Containers Conifers can look great either on their own (especially when planted with a few small bulbs around their roots, to add splashes of seasonal colour) or in a mixed planting where they help
Conifer Planting & Growing Tips Make the planting hole a minimum of 1m wide by 30cm deep and incorporate plenty of bulky organic matter such as garden compost, proprietary planting mix or well-rotted manure. Tease or spread out the roots well and backfill the hole with garden soil mixed with planting compost. Make sure that only the roots are below the soil surface, water in well.
Keep the soil moist at all times, especially during late spring and summer when drought is likely. Feed in April using a proprietary fertiliser to keep the growth good and ensure it is a good colour. Trim conifers regularly but remember if you cut back into old or brown growth you’ll run in to trouble as they don’t produce dormant buds and you’ll end up exposing all the old growth. Visit Pippa’s website www. pippagreenwood.com for a great range of gardeningrelated items including stylish ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ Gift Cards, Handmade pottery herb planters, Pippa’s favourite weeding tool, signed books and lots of seriously useful garden items.

ADVERTISER FEATURE
Real Life Therapeutic Parenting Foster Carers and adopters usually trudge in to our training, feeling worn out, drained and rather like they would prefer to be spending this precious free time relaxing instead! When they leave they are inspired, enthusiastic and say; 'It’s like the lights have gone on! I now believe I can really do this'! 'Everything now makes sense. I feel truly inspired'. 'I wish I had had this training years ago. It will make such a difference to me'. The reason? I adopted 5 siblings with attachment difficulties, 17 years ago. Once the children were all reunited and placed with me, traumatic issues from their birth family began to resurface more, and I found myself on a crash course about Attachment, Trauma and Therapeutic Re-parenting. With shame I remembered all the adoptive and foster families I had inadvertently patronised as a well-meaning Social Worker. Now I understood what it was like to live with children with Attachment Disorder! They taught me how to be a 12
therapeutic parent, and what attachment disorder meant. I then took all the strategies I had learned and opened my own fostering agency, Fostering Together Ltd. (Ofsted 'Outstanding 2013-2014). Within the agency, our Foster Carers became high level specialists in therapeutic parenting through our training. We knew that we needed to give more carers the tools they really needed to heal children, so I then started Inspire Training Group, and began delivering training to lots of fostering agencies and local authorities. As a Therapeutic Parent I learned the importance of routines and boundaries, never being vague, being 100% reliable, as well as the necessity to always be thinking outside the box and about the effects of the children's early missed nurture. I also learnt, and now teach all about how the children need a different kind of parenting. Take all the star charts and throw them away! It has been extremely tough to try to get all the children to where they need to be, and there have been many days where it
all seemed too much. I have learned about secondary trauma, or 'compassion fatigue'. This is when the carer literally 'runs out of care'. I now help foster carers and adopters to recognise this and give them strategies to overcome it. The most important thing was to break the 'cycle of abuse' and to help my children to form reciprocal relationships. I became a Granny three months ago and my daughter, aged 20 is an absolutely fantastic mum. My main motivation now, is to help as many foster carers and adopters as I can to achieve the same, or better, feel inspired to make a real difference and to become dedicated therapeutic foster carers and adopters themselves. Inspire Training Group are running a free workshop for foster carers, those who would like to foster, and adopters at Hilton Hotel, Chilworth, Southampton on 29th September 2014 10am – 2.30pm. To book on this free course call 03301 222062 and ask for Miranda or text ‘Fostering’ to 88802. Places are very limited.

Therapeutic Parenting (P.A.C.E) in Real Life uses the T.R.U.E ® model of care developed (and implemented) by the trainers. Inspire Training will share strategies THAT WORK, and interventions they have employed to great effect in making REAL and life changing difference to relationships in caring for traumatised children.
SoMe CarerS Say: “Sometimes I really don’t like him” “Our Social Worker does not understand us and does not listen” “We feel unsupported, alone, blamed and criticised” “We need real practical help!” Does this sound familiar?
Why Attend? • To get practical real life strategies to apply P.A.C.E and gain inspiration. • To be given the tools to solve complex relationship issues between carers and other professionals around the children we care for. • To improve the quality of family life, break negative cycles and sustain placement longevity. Training Workshop includes tea, coffee and lunch Places are limited so contact us to register now!

TECHNOLOGY
Pick A Side Apple or Android? Is Apple where it’s at, or are Android gadgets better buys?
Apple is due to launch the latest, greatest iPhone this September along with iOS 8, the latest version of its smartphone and tablet software. The phone will have a bigger screen and a better camera, but one thing won’t change: like all Apple gadgets, it won’t be cheap. Apple isn’t the only game in town, though. Google’s Android system has been updated too, and Android phones and tablets from the likes of Samsung, HTC, LG and Sony are often just as pretty and just as powerful as anything Apple makes - and in many cases they’re a good bit cheaper too. Android isn’t quite as simple or as elegant as Apple’s iOS, but there’s not much in it - and where Apple only makes a handful of devices, with Android there are dozens of phones and tablets to choose from. Unless you’re a big Apple fan then, is Android the smarter choice? Unfortunately it’s a bit more complicated than that. Apple and Google don’t just want to be your friend when you buy a phone or a tablet. They want to be part of your entire life. They want to be the companies you from whom you buy your music, movies, TV programmes 20
and books, the companies who provide your in-car entertainment and navigation systems, the companies who handle all your messages, voice and video calls, the companies who connect all of the appliances in your home and who track your health and fitness.
you fancy Apple’s clever Apple TV system, you won’t get the best from it unless you also have an Apple phone or tablet; if you want to use an Android smart watch, it’ll work best with an Android phone; if you’re a fan of iTunes Match you can’t use it on Android, and so on.
By the end of this year both firms will have smart watches or wristbands that monitor your vital signs, set-top boxes that stream music and video to your TV, software that connects to cars from the likes of Volvo, Nissan, Audi and Mercedes, music and movie streaming services and home automation systems - and that’s just the stuff we know about.
Consider what your friends, family and colleagues use. Apple’s iMessage offers free SMS and MMS messages (and soon, voice messages too), but only to other iMessage users - and iMessage isn’t available on Android. FaceTime offers free video calling, but it can’t call Android users (although Google’s alternative, Hangouts, does work on Apple devices. As a rule of thumb Google services work on Apple kit but not vice-versa.
This means you need to consider the bigger picture. It’s not just about the particular phone or tablet you want to buy, but what techy types call the ecosystem: the various things that the phone or tablet connects to and gets content from. For example, if
Increasingly, then, choosing a phone or tablet is more like picking a football team to support or voting for a political party: the available choices all do essentially the same thing, but they do it in very different ways - and your choice might colour your life for many years to come.

LIFE BEGINS
To Many Phish In The Sea... By Kate McLelland Looking at my inbox, it’s a wonder that I’m not in serious trouble with a lot of people. “HM Revenue and Customs” emailed me several months ago and asked me to go through my tax return - attached to the email - and reply immediately. I ignored them. Then I received two further emails, one about a tax rebate and one confessing to an “operational error” that meant I had overpaid my tax and was due a refund. I deleted them. It’s the same with my friends. They email me in crisis from various holiday locations in Fiji, Barcelona or Rio de Janeiro, but I turn my back on their desperate pleas for help: “We were mugged in an alley by a gang of thugs on our way back from shopping. All our money, phones and credit cards were stolen,
24
including our jewellery. We’re financially strapped and I’ll be grateful if I can get a loan of £1,750.” “International bank transactions take 7 working days to be effective and I can’t wait. I need you to help me with £2,550 to pay my hotel bills and get home.” All emails originate from my friends’ actual addresses and are signed with heartbreaking messages such as: “All hopes on you, Joanna” or “Our lives are in your hands, John.” After reading this, you’d be justified in imagining me as an unscrupulous multi-millionaire – careless of personal relationships and too rich to bother with a tax rebate. Let me put your mind at rest: all these emails have been sent by criminals trying to get my money or steal my identity (or both). It’s easy to laugh at the more extreme examples – for instance, when “the Chief Executive of Facebook” sends you an email that includes the immortal line: “You where picked by an Advanced automated random computer search from the Facebook in other to claim your £1,000,000.00 GBP”, or when a strangely-coloured bank logo
appears to have been pasted onto a standard email document by a five-year-old. The generic term for these attempts at online extortion is “phishing”, but if all fraudsters were that easy to detect, there would be very little internet fraud. Unfortunately many internet “phishers” are considerably more skillful in their approach. One recent scam uses a sign-in page that is identical to the one used by Google Drive to request your password. You’ll receive an innocent-looking email entitled “Documents” with a link that will take you to a page that is identical in every way to the one you use to access your Google Docs. Only the most eagle-eyed user would spot the fact that there are tell-tale typographical errors in the drop-down menu in the corner – a small mistake the fraudsters failed to pick up and the only one that suggests something is wrong with the page. We’re all so busy these days that it’s easy to assume the officiallooking communication that arrives in your inbox is the real thing, but there are a few rules you can follow to make sure that you don’t become a victim.
1. Never respond to emails requesting personal financial information. Reputable organisations don’t ask for passwords or account details in an email. Don’t be fooled by messages such as “Urgent – your account details may have been stolen” or “Your account has been frozen”. 2. Always visit a bank’s website by typing the bank’s URL into the address bar Phishers try to lure people to link to a fake site (“myonlinebank.co.uk” rather than the correct site “myonlinebank.com”) by asking them to click on a link in an email. It’s always safer to type in the bank’s address yourself. 3. Keep a regular check on your online accounts. Make sure you check your
statements frequently. If you spot any suspicious transactions, report them to the bank immediately. 4. Check that the website you are visiting is a secure one You can tell that you are dealing with a secure site if the start of the address “http://“ includes an “s” for “secure”, as in “https://“. You should also check whether a little lock icon appears on your browser’s status bar. These signs indicate that the site is using encryption to hide your data, but you should continue to exercise caution - just because a site uses encryption it doesn’t guarantee that it’s legitimate. 5. Be careful with emails and personal data Don’t give away PINS or passwords or any personal information. Don’t ever
write down your passwords or use the same password for multiple accounts. 6. Keep your computer secure by setting up a firewall and installing and updating antivirus protection software. Don’t be tempted to open suspicious-looking emails. 7. Report suspicious activity Crimestoppers has a site where you can learn about different types of fraud and find out how to report them: http://gameoffraud. crimestoppers-uk.org These are general guidelines but remember that just as technology continues to develop and improve, so will the skills of the phishers. That leaves you with one golden rule: if an online communication arouses even the slightest suspicion, don’t open it.

The college’s vocational pass rate for courses including Business, Media, Sport, IT, Health & Social Care and Performing Arts remains outstanding at 99.4% with distinction grades equivalent to A* -B at A Level achieved by 84% of students. And Another Thing... by Tom Hughes
I have a blended family. I don’t mean one night I went mad, chopped them all to bits with an axe then heaved their dismembered corpses into a giant Moulinex. What I actually mean is Sarah and I have four kids between us. And no, it’s not Piccadilly Circus in our house, it’s Grand Central Station. “Dad, I’m just going out.” “But Rob, you’ve just come in.” “Yes I know, I’ve come in to say I’m going out. Bye.” (slam). “Dad, will you take me to the cinema?” “Emma, what are we going to see?” “I’m going to watch The Hunger Games.” “Half way through the movie, will I feel like a Lyons hot dog?”
Eyebrows up, chin down, “So… that’s a no?”
Don’t think door banging is confined to the entrance to our castle; all the internal doors take a hammering. I am an expert in counting down the slams.
Amateur. And so another week begins - football, gymnastics, swimming, cinema, proms, cheerleading, sleepovers, horseriding.
“Dad! That’s so unfair! Right! Fine.”
Have you ever tried to organise a parent’s lift rota on Facebook? It’d be easier to start a protest flash mob outside a G8 summit.
“Three, two, one …(slam!) Ooh, right on the money.” Sarah was impressed. “You’ve got that down to a tee.” “Here, do you want a go?” “OK”
“A what? Dad you’re not coming, you’re just giving us a lift.”
Right on cue, Evan popped his head round.
I get ready to take Emma to the cinema in my trusty Mondeo Ghia (half leather trim, heated seats). Now, do I have everything? Keys, coat, shoes, glasses….ready. Beep! Beep! Hang on, who is that outside sounding their horn?
“Dad, can I have a lift on Friday?”
“It’s OK, Rebecca’s Mum’s here, she’s taking us now, mix up, bye!” (slam). 30
I sit back down in my coat. Ollie (the dog) sees that I am now wearing my anorak and trots off to retrieve his lead. He drops it at my feet and gives me his, “Well, come on!” look. We make it to the front porch just as the heavens open. “I’m taking Ollie out, bye!” (slam).
“No problem, where to, your girlfriend’s? The cinema?” “Brighton.” “Brighton?” “I’ve got tickets to see The Sausage Knotters.” “Brighton?”
“I’m not entirely sure the Mondeo is up to it.” “Fine!” Sarah delayed her countdown just a touch too long - “Three…..two (slam), oh damn!”
No one tells me who is picking up who. Emma was in the back seat ready to go to Duke of Edinburgh (It was a meeting about his Award, he hadn’t called round to see if she was playing out) and I was just about to set off when a Chelsea tractor with blacked out windows skidded to a halt on the pavement in front of us. A strange creature with Gucci bug eyes and a mouth like a salmon was at the wheel. I shrugged. The creature shrugged back. Emma looked at me and shrugged. We all shrugged. Then the creature sped off, beeping her horn and pouting rude words
at me. “Who was that?” “Rebecca’s Mum, I think she was supposed to take.” “Well nobody told me.” Then, a miracle, a gift from the gods. Rob passed his test. We were so proud, his Mother was overjoyed. A whole new world opened up. Lifts to the pub, lifts to the game, lifts to the pub; my life was coming back to say hello! Delirious, I rang my insurance company. “Good morning, I’d like to add an additional driver to my policy.” “Additional driver’s age?”
“That will be an additional premium of one hundred and thirty pounds.” “Really? That’s very reasonable.” Long summer nights at our local watching other couples throw car keys at each other filtered into my mind. “Yes, that additional premium takes you to your renewal date which is next Saturday.” “Ok, and how much is it for the year? “One moment please…five thousand eight hundred and fifty nine pounds, and thirty one pence.” “You what?! Five thousand – “
“Seventeen.” “Two hours.”
“..Eight hundred and fifty nine pounds thirty one pence. With a nine hundred pounds excess.”
“One moment please”. A pause while the computer flicked over into improbability mode.
“But….the car is only worth eight hundred quid. So, what am I actually paying for?”
“How long licence held?”
“…Peace of mind?” It was my birthday last week. I came home and everyone was in the front room grinning. I sat down, Rob pushed Olly off my lap and handed me my present. A pair of driver’s gloves and some furry dice. Everyone fell about. A car horn blared outside. “That’s not that Rebecca’s scary Mum again is it?” “No. Come on Dad, we’re taking you to dinner.” Outside, a minibus. We all piled in. What’s this - free food and a lift home? Priceless. You see, it doesn’t take much…. Follow Tom’s family life at groomsdaybook.com

RECIPE
Dutch Apple Pie The buttery pastry for this deep dish pie is made with a mix of selfraising and plain flours which gives it a soft and cake-like texture. If you prefer a crisper pastry use all plain flour. Choose crisp sweet dessert apples such as Cox’s Orange Pippins or Discovery.
Ingredients:
Now get started...
• • • •
1. To make the pastry, sift the plain and self- raising flours into a large bowl and add the diced butter. Using your fingertips, rub the butter into the flour to make fine breadcrumbs. Stir in the sugar and beaten eggs and mix to a soft dough. Knead very lightly until smooth then wrap in cling film and chill in the fridge for 1 hour.
• • • • • • • •
200g plain flour 150g self raising flour 175 g unsalted butter, diced 150g caster sugar plus 1 tbsp for sprinkling 2 medium eggs, beaten 400g dessert apples, peeled, cored and sliced 75g raisins 75g light soft brown sugar 1 tbsp corn flour 1 tsp ground cinnamon 2 tbsp milk Whipped cream, to serve
TIP Replace the apples with sliced pears or a mixture of summer berries such as blackberries, raspberries and blueberries.
Serves 8 38
2. Preheat the oven to 190°C/170°C fan/gas 5. Place a baking sheet in the oven to pre-heat. 3. Roll out two-thirds of the pastry on a lightly floured surface and use to line the base of a 23 cm round loose-based fluted flan tin. 4. Toss the apple slices in a bowl with the raisins, brown sugar, cornflour and cinnamon then layer in the pastry case, pressing down gently. Roll out the remaining pastry and cut into strips. Arrange in a lattice pattern over the apples. Dab the edges of the strips with a little water and press firmly to seal. 5. Brush the top of the pie with milk and sprinkle over caster sugar. Place the flan case on the preheated baking sheet and bake for 35-40 minutes until the pastry is crisp and golden. Serve warm or cold with whipped cream.
