Lightbulb Moment

About Discover Magazines

When spotlights came in and track lighting all the rage, I was building an extension. On hindsight I overdid it a bit on the lighting front as my husband recently declared in exasperation, “do you know we have 88 bulbs in this house ... 88 !”.

This is all in a bid to reduce our embarrassingly large electricity bill. I began with restricted use of the gas guzzling tumble dryer. I’m now using the Oven feature on my microwave rather than automatically using the main oven simply to warm up plates or cooking a small meal for two. Alas, teenagers leaving the room without turning off lights, the tv, computers and hair straighteners is the last challenge to crack! My husband suggested abandoning the dishwasher .. yeah, right... I promptly showed him where the Marigolds live! There are so many ways to keep the bills in control from changing the settings on your central heating now that it’s warmer to changing light bulbs that your local plumber, electrician, builder can help you with. I’m sure they’d be happy to be asked for their advice.

With old fashioned bulbs as rare as blue Smarties, I tried those long life ones that come to life after you’ve tripped over the wellies in the unlit garage. Not my choice, so I’ve taken advice from my local electrician and switched from 50w spotlights to 5w LED bulbs.

Spend Now, Save Later These days, we’re all being urged to return to ‘make do and mend’; to reduce, reuse and recycle because it’s economical and ‘green’. But sometimes this can be false economy – and false ecology, too. Some things may be worth replacing or investing in. Cars

Ever hung on too long to a car that’s eventually cost more in total repairs than it did to buy? Buying a new (or even relatively new!) car is expensive, but in the long run it may save you money – depending on what car you buy. ECONOMY: A new car should be more fuel efficient, saving you money on petrol or diesel costs. Treat it well and it shouldn’t need major maintenance for years, plus a brand new car won’t need an MOT until it’s three years old. ECOLOGY: Greater fuel efficiency and lower emissions mean newer cars tend to be greener.

Boilers

Once again, we can hang on to boilers too long and they can be expensive to repair, particularly if you need to call someone out overnight or during

By Alison Runham, ww.alison.runham.co.uk

a holiday. Maintenance contracts aren’t always cheap either. ECONOMY: Boilers account for around 55% of your energy costs; replacing your old one with an A-rated condensing boiler and modern heating controls will ensure your home and water are warm when needed but aren’t wasting energy when not, and could save you up to £305 a year on energy bills. ECOLOGY: A new boiler will reduce your energy use and carbon dioxide emissions.

Water softeners

About 60% of UK households have hard water that can damage and lessen the efficiency of appliances and heating systems; just 1.6mm of scale build-up can cause a 12% loss in heating efficiency. Shower heads, toilets, taps, pipes, radiators, boilers, kettles, dishwashers and washing machines will all need more frequent repair and replacement, not to mention the cost of limescale removers for appliances, sinks and toilets, and the greater quantities of detergent, shampoo, shower gel, washing-up liquid and toilet cleaner required. ECONOMY: British Water estimates that a water softener could save the average 4-person household around £200 a year. ECOLOGY: Softened water can remove existing scale deposits over time in heating systems. Fewer chemicals and less energy

are used, and appliances will need less frequent repair or replacement.

Solar Panels

The government’s FIT (feed-intariff) scheme offers 20 years of guaranteed, tax-free, indexlinked payments to households that produce their own electricity from renewable technologies. To make the biggest saving, use as many appliances as possible in the daytime when generating your own power. ECONOMY: You’re paid for every kilowatt of energy you create, and every kilowatt you don’t use, which feeds back into the National Grid; and of course the bills from your supplier will drop dramatically too (solar panels create about two thirds of the energy necessary for a family of four). On average, installation costs around £7000 and you may need to replace the inverter, which links the panels to your domestic supply, once every 20 years. It takes around 10-12 years to get back the cost of installation. Bear in mind that the FIT has dropped dramatically over the past few years, but then installation costs are dropping too. ECOLOGY: Your household will be producing renewable energy and none will be wasted, as it’s fed back into the Grid when unused. Always research any major purchase to ensure you get the best deal for you.

Designer vs. Budget Beauty Buys By Helen Taylor

Do you love designer cosmetics? Or do you much prefer a bargain buy? Whatever your preference, it’s worth checking out our guide to when to splurge and when to save, so that you can get the best value - and results - from the products you spend your hard-earned cash on.

Image: Courtesy of Estee Lauder

Foundation - Splurge

Blusher - Save

Foundation literally provides the foundation for the rest of your make-up. It evens out your natural skin and covers up flaws - like blemishes and scars - to leave you with a perfect finish. So it’s very important to choose the right one for you.

Everyone needs a bit of colour in their cheeks; fortunately you don’t have to spend too much to find the one that’s perfect for you. Blusher is definitely one of those items that you can save on, Image: Courtesy of because high-end products don’t differ too greatly from budget versions. Just make sure that you choose a natural shade, as cheaper colours can be a little more intense and unnatural if applied too heavily.

Cheap products just can’t beat their costly counterparts when it comes to this all-important purchase, because poorer formulations don’t have the staying power and the true-to-skin colour of pricier versions. To find the one that’s ideal for you, head to your nearest department store and take advantage of some expert advice. Find a shade which matches your natural colouring and works best for your requirements - like skin type and coverage. High-end foundations are formulated with all of these things in mind and come in a variety of true-to-life shades. Built to solve the problems presented by cheap foundations, these products really are a cut above the others. Try Estee Lauder Double Wear £28.50.

Try No7 Natural Blush Tint Powder £8.00.

Mascara - Splurge

Full, long lashes really do make your eyes look more beautiful, so it’s worth investing in a quality mascara. Cheap mascara is often disappointing because its consistency doesn’t match that of more expensive products, and so leaves lashes looking sticky, clumpy and undefined. High-end cosmetic companies lead the way in developing the very best formulas and brushes for their mascara, so you can be sure that you’ll see the benefits when you upgrade from a budget brand. Try Givenchy Noir Couture Waterproof Mascara £22.50.

9

Eyeshadow - Save Generally you can opt for wearing cheaper eyeshadow as there isn’t too much difference between budget and more costly versions; as long as you choose neutral shades, as stronger colours can be very harsh and unnatural looking. Cheap eyeshadow does have a tendency to be more glittery and shimmery though, so be careful using it if you’re a more mature lady because it will emphasise every line and crease around your eyes. Try Bourjois Little Round Pot Intense Eyeshadow £6.99.

Powder - Splurge Like foundation, there is a real difference between budget and high-end face powder. Expensive

f Estee Lauder

products are finely milled, making their texture extra soft and natural looking on the skin, whilst cheaper versions won’t last as long or match your skin tone well. A good powder sets your foundation and finishes your make-up look, so make sure you splurge and invest in a quality one. Try Guerlain Les Voilettes Compact Powder £35.

Lip-gloss - Save Lip-gloss formulations are pretty similar, so save some money when you buy yours. There are literally hundreds of colours and flavours to choose from and all of them will instantly serve to plump up your lips. Try those with a brush rather than the

rub on type as these are said to be gentler and less damaging on the lips. Try Barry M Lip-gloss Wand £4.49.

Highlighter - Splurge A good quality highlighter will perk up your complexion, accentuate your favourite features, and even camouflage aging skin. There are many different ones on the market some are in powder form, others liquid – but find the right one and your face will be instantly lifted with a radiant and youthful glow. And if there’s one product that you really should splurge on, it’s YSL’s Touche Eclat Radiant Touch £25.

HEALTH

Sleep: You Can Do It With Your Eyes Closed By Alison Runham www.alison.runham.co.uk

Sleep is supposedly involuntary. So we take it for granted when we can sleep, and often ignore it when we can’t. But we shouldn’t. Research has proved that sleep is as important to our health as diet and exercise. Lack of sleep affects memory, mood, concentration and reaction times, and long-term it can affect language processing, planning abilities and our sense of time. Some sleep disorders can contribute to serious health problems. So what stops us getting the sleep we need, and how can we improve the quantity and quality of our sleep? Our sleep has recurring cycles of around 100 minutes, starting with Non-REM sleep. Non-REM (non rapid eye movement) sleep progresses from Stage One (light sleep), through Stages Two and Three (when heart rate and breathing drop) to Stage Four’s deep sleep (when bed-wetting, night terrors or sleepwalking occurs). REM (rapid eye movement) sleep (dream time) follows. Our brain is active, breathing and blood pressure rise, and our eyes move; but we can’t move our bodies. Afterwards, the cycle restarts. Sweet Dreams aren’t made of this. Enemies of good sleep include pain; the need to urinate; stress or depression; the menstrual

cycle (hormonal changes affect temperature and melatonin production), the menopause and snoring. There are also sleep disorders, including night terrors; sleep walking, talking and paralysis; teeth grinding; restless limb syndrome; and the more serious sleep apnoea (which can starve the brain of oxygen). To help you sleep soundly: • Eliminate Physical Factors Cure snoring with nasal strips, sprays or minor surgery. See your doctor about physical or mental health issues and sleep disorders; they may recommend Cognitive Behaviour Therapy or sleeping tablets. PMS (Pre-Menstrual Syndrome) treatments may help if you sleep badly before a period. • Drink Warm Milk - Eat a carbohydrate-rich snack beforehand to improve the efficacy of the milk’s tryptophan (a raw material for the sleep hormone melatonin). Milk may help by making you feel warm and full too. • Don’t Go to Bed Hungry Avoid large, late meals but have a light snack if you’re hungry. • Avoid Alcohol and Caffeine in the Evening, and Stop Smoking Caffeine is a stimulant and will keep you awake. Alcohol makes you sleepy, but impairs sleep quality – as does nicotine. • Get enough Sunlight and Exercise - Light and exercise help regulate our body clock and mood, so try to spend

time outside and get regular exercise. • Avoid Light in the Evening However, bright light before bedtime will suppress melatonin secretion, so dim the lights. Either avoid TVs, laptops, tablets and smart phones within two hours of bedtime, or turn down their brightness settings (some screens have a night mode). • Establish a Routine -Establish a relaxing routine before bed. Avoid watching TV in the bedroom or reading anything too emotionally charged or terrifying. • Make your Bedroom a Haven Avoid using your bedroom as a work or dump space; clutter will nag to be cleared up. Ensure your bedroom is well ventilated, dark, and not too hot or cold. Consider earplugs to eliminate noise, and invest in a really comfy mattress (try before you buy). • Declutter your Brain Download your brain by jotting down tomorrow’s jobs and any worries (particularly therapeutic if you write a positive action beside them). • Have A Warm Bath Before Bed Add relaxing bath oils, too. • Try not to worry about it Worrying about lack of sleep could start a vicious circle. If you can’t sleep, leave the bedroom and do something absorbing but calm: read a magazine or do a jigsaw until you feel sleepy.

The Green, Green Grass of Home Well, what a winter it has been for our gardens. And your lawn is probably showing the scars of every gale and deluge that has hit us over the last few months. No matter how lovely it was in September, right now it probably looks more like coir matting than a green carpet! What to do then to bring it back to life? Our featured advertiser this month, Greenkeeper Lawncare, have made a very successful business out of proving that using their professional (but very affordable) service is the best solution, with hundreds of happy, repeat customers year after year. So what’s the difference between professional and DIY?

Before the GreenKeeper treatment, our cover picture shows the after

Products Greenkeeper uses professional slow-release fertilizers, which have been developed, tested, and fine-tuned on tens of thousands of lawns, golf courses, sports fields and parks. Furthermore organic summer feeds are applied within your schedule at no extra cost.

Equipment Scarification and aeration are physically demanding procedures and need robust equipment to get good results – a domestic lawn rake isn’t up to scratch. Greenkeeper uses professional machines, clear up ‘arisings’ and dispose of them for you if necessary.

starting from square one. A lawn maintenance service can make a significant difference, giving your grass a regular program of TLC.

Cost Yes there’s a fee to pay to a professional, but you’d still need to pay for equipment and fertilisers if you were doing it yourself. And when you take into account the hidden cost of using your time it’s really great value ‘outsourcing’ this service. You only have to look at this picture – the ‘before’ – then turn to the front cover to see the ‘after’. The results speak for themselves, and with prices starting at just £14 per treatment, what’s not to love? Call Rob at Greenkeeper today for your free lawn analysis.

The Greenkeeper service begins with a complete lawn analysis, evaluating your soil type, and identifying any weeds and pests. Then they develop a programme of treatment that's specific to the needs of your lawn, which is monitored throughout the seasons.

Cake and Bake

Banana, Walnut & Chocolate Cake Bananas ripen so quickly that it’s easy to find yourself with several left over needing to be used up. Many people don’t like the taste or smell of ripe bananas though so they often go to waste. However, when baked in a cake they lose their slightly sour smell and give a subtle taste, which is particularly delicious when combined with chocolate and walnuts.

Ingredients:

1

• 100g butter at room temperature

Preheat the oven to 180C, 160C for fan oven or gas mark 4.

2

Grease a 900g loaf tin and line with greaseproof paper

3

Cream the sugar and butter together until fluffy

4

Add the eggs and the vanilla essence and then the bananas and mix in well

5

Carefully mix in the flower and bicarb, baking powder and cinnamon so there are no lumps, then fold through the dark chocolate and most of the walnuts.

6

Pour the batter into the loaf tin and bake for 45-55 minutes until a skewer through the centre comes out clean.

• 100g Walnuts (Chopped or whole)

7

Leave on a rack until cool before serving to allow time for the chocolate to set.

• 75g Dark chocolate chopped or coarsely grated

8

Sprinkle with icing sugar and a few more chopped walnuts.

• 100g light brown sugar • 25 grams caster sugar (white or golden) • 2 large eggs • 1 tsp vanilla essence • 3-4 ripe bananas (depending on size), mashed • 175g plain flour • 1 tsp baking powder • 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda • tsp cinnamon

Charity of the Month The Rose Road Association supports local young people with disabilities and their families from across Hampshire. We currently support 400 children with a variety of short breaks – ranging from overnight respite in Oaks and Acorns, community outreach which can include day trips and visits, our Take-A-Break service or our wonderful playschemes! Rose Road believes passionately in valuing individuals, respecting choices and the celebrating the achievements of our young people. Hello, my name is Isabel! “I was a little cheeky and was born prematurely in 2005. My Mum and Dad think I’m an absolute superstar as all the doctors and nurses didn’t think I’d be able to walk or talk and I most certainly can! I have two sisters and I certainly do my best to keep up with them! I love being with all my friends at Play PM and having fun with Megs and all the other lovely helpers, I even go for a dip in the pool. We do lots of arts and crafts, going in the soft play room but my favourite thing to do is go ten pin bowling, I am very good at it! As I have got older I have started to use Rose Road for respite. I stay in Oaks and Acorns which is brilliant – I enjoy playing board games, going to the park and we have even been on trips to the farm. As

SHORT STORY

Candles As Cassie walked up College Street she was accompanied by the unsettling feeling she had forgotten something. She was still in a bad mood with Mum for not allowing her to wear high heels, and Bethany for crying because she wasn’t invited to the party. Bethany was a strange kid. Her current obsessions were blowing out birthday candles and answering the phone. Cassie could tolerate the candle blowing, but the phone answering was too much, especially when a boy called for her. Mum encouraged Bethany, saying she was the perfect device for getting rid of both cold callers and boys. So Cassie had told Bethany that once you’re a teenager you don’t have candles anymore and Bethany had cried even louder and vowed never to become a teenager. The last thing Cassie heard as she slammed the front door was Mum saying, “One teenager in the house is quite enough, thank you”. Spots of rain splashed onto the pavement. She’d spent ages straightening her hair and now she was going to arrive at the party looking like an otter. With horror, she remembered what she had forgotten. She had borrowed Mum’s straighteners without asking and left them lying on her bedroom carpet; even

by Jackie Brewster worse, they were still switched on. The carpet would be melted. The straighteners would be ruined. Mum was going to be furious. Her life wouldn’t be worth living. There had to be a way out of this. A devious thought crept into Cassie’s head. She had always forbidden Bethany from going in her bedroom but today she might make an exception. She pulled out her phone and dialled home. As expected, after a few rings, Bethany picked up. “Is Mum there?”. Cassie whispered. “No”. Bethany said. “Can you do me a favour?”. Cassie asked. “Okay”. Her four year old voice sounded even younger on the phone. “Go into my room and very carefully un-plug Mummy’s straighteners”. Even as she spoke Cassie knew this was a terrible idea. “I’ll bring you back some cake if you don’t tell Mum”. This bribe did not make her feel any better. “Mummy said I’ve got to stay in the lounge”. Bethany said. “Where is Mum?”. Cassie asked. “She’s in the loft”. Bethany answered. “What’s she doing up there?”. “She’s gone to get the candles”, Bethany said, “I’m allowed to blow them out later”. “Okay, so while she’s up there, sneak into my room”. Cassie continued. “No. I’m waiting for the candles”.

Bethany insisted and hung up. Cassie stamped her feet in fury. The melting carpet would be beginning to smell. Mum could discover the straighteners at any moment. Cassie looked at her watch. The party was about to start. She should turn off her phone, go to the party, and by the time she got home Mum might have calmed down. She would be grounded forever but at least she wouldn’t miss the party. She groaned, and looked down at her feet. Ten minutes later Cassie burst through her own front door. “Only me!”. She yelled, dashing upstairs, “Forgot something!”. She flicked her bedroom light on. The bulb had gone. Cassie cursed and dropped to her knees, feeling gingerly around on the carpet for the straighteners. When she finally closed her fingers around them they were completely cold. The carpet was undamaged. “The power’s been off since you left”. Mum called, “Do you want a candle?”. “No need!”. Cassie stealthily returned the straighteners to Mum’s dressing table and skipped back downstairs. She was out the front door, on her way to the party once more; grateful she wasn’t wearing high heels.
