What’s in a Name You may notice the front cover of Discover has changed this month with a new name. Why the change? We’ve been using Discover as the title for all our editions to reinforce the brand awareness of the name and it’s been successful. It’s still Discover and nothing else has changed but it’s time for Phase 2. Discover is still the magazine’s name but each edition will have the area it covers as the main heading; Winchester, Totton & Eling, Chandlers Ford, Romsey, Southamtpon, Meon Valley, Locks Heath, Bitterne & West End, Itchen Valley and, of course, Fareham. We hope you continue to enjoy the articles, local editorial and of course the advertisers want to hear from you, too! Please support your local businesses and Live Local, Think Local, Buy Local.

FREE COFFEE Talking of brands, Costa has put Stubbington on the map by opening its latest coffee shop on Stubbington Green (see page 16 for full story). Costa recently opened in Chandlers Ford, where Tania and I live, and it’s been lovely to see so many young people sitting outside chatting over a frappuccino, bringing a buzz to the sleepy parade of shops. The other independent coffee shops nearby have not been affected badly as feared as it’s bringing more people, especially the youngsters, to the area and success breeds success for everyone in the end. Don’t forget to use the FREE coffee voucher on this issue’s back cover. We welcome any input to the magazine; local news, what’s on, charity events etc so please use the free editorial submission form on our website dedicated to our readers www.discovercommunity.co.uk

A Feast of a Festival Jam Making

Every July Hampshire celebrates its abundance of food and drink through the Hampshire Food Festival, a delicious month-long diary of events for everyone to enjoy. This popular festival is organised by the county’s food group, Hampshire Fare, with events throughout the county held by local producers, farmers, pubs and restaurants. Popular events include brewery, farm and vineyard tours, cookery classes and demonstrations, produce markets and tastings, picnics, barbecues and cream teas, jam-making and cheesemaking, and special Festival menus showcasing local ingredients plus much more. Tracy Nash, Commercial Manager, Hampshire Fare, describes it as the foodie event of the year, “ I’m really excited as the Festival has moved up a gear this year. The quality, variety and geographical spread is brilliant. There’s something for everyone. We’ve seen a lot of our members getting

involved for the first time and quite a few businesses who aren’t Hampshire Fare members coming on board, too. This year is really shaping up to be the best Festival yet!” There’s much to be excited about. Highlights include an invitation from Lord and Lady Wakeham and Hampshire Fare to a special Local Food Shopping Experience Evening on Friday, 11 July, to be held in the magnificent surroundings of Pinglestone Barn, a 15th century monastic aisled barn. Tickets are £10 and include a glass of Hattingley Valley fizz with all profits going to Age UK Winchester. There is also a Vineyards of Hampshire Wine Festival at Jenkyn’s Place Vineyard on Sunday, 13 July and Sparsholt’s, ‘A Taste Of Hampshire’ on Saturday, 19 July with eight leading Hampshire chefs in the

Hampshire Fare Cookery Theatre, including James Durrant (seen on Great British Menu) and Luke Holder (from Lime Wood) plus Kids’ Kitchen and Cake-Off competition judged by Harry the Junior Bake-Off winner. The Festival starts from 25 June with a theatre menu and performances in the gardens of The Thomas Lord, West Meon and runs until 3 August with Trout ‘n About Stockbridge market-style food festival. Discovering the stories behind the producers is a great way to explore the county with its varied landscape of lush farmland, downland, woodland, chalk stream valleys and coast. Pick up a free copy of the Hampshire Food Festival programme from Southern Co-operative stores or download the programme from www.hampshirefare.co.uk. 9

Fashionable at Fifty by Jackie Brewster

“Girls. Who can tell me the difference between leggings, jeggings and treggings?” Felicity smiled, hiding her disappointment that only two people, Edna Flewit and Doris Cartwright, had turned up for her ‘Fashionable at Fifty’ workshop at Buckledon Village Hall. Neither of them were a day under seventy five. Only Ted, who was there to lock up, raised his hand and replied, “I couldn’t say to be honest, but my wife makes me wear them sometimes”. Ted had been loitering at the back, listening and jangling his keys, until he finally pulled up a chair. It aggrieved Felicity that he was getting a free workshop but at least he interacted. Unlike Edna, whose chin had sunk into her bosom. Either she was snoring or had a chainsaw in her handbag. Handyman Ted, was a regular fixture in the village, yet his interest in fashion came as a surprise. When Felicity commented that pop socks were a wardrobe essential, Ted had nodded sagely, announcing he preferred ten denier. Glancing discreetly at his ankles, Felicity saw no sign of hosiery - only thick woollen socks that would benefit from either a darning needle or the dustbin.

She moved swiftly on to ‘Capsule Wardrobes for a Weekend Away’. Doris became suddenly animated about a night she’d spent at a hotel by the motorway services, after Mr Cartwright had hammered through a hot water pipe. Felicity worried they were heading off the subject. She decided to wrestle back control of the room with ‘Ten Ways to Wear a Pashmina’. “Who’d like to volunteer?” she asked, and was about to whisk out her expensive pashmina when she saw Doris wipe her fingers down her slacks. Luckily she had a good polyester substitute, with none of the drape but washable at 40 degrees. No hands went up but Ted stood up and walked to the front. Ted allowed Felicity to demonstrate a style of wrap she was rather proud of – the Parisian Twist. It was her own invention. “I wouldn’t tie it like this”, Ted said when she finished. “Really?” She was slightly offended. “How would you do it?” “I like to tie a scarf with more swish to it”, he said, untangling himself. “Do demonstrate”. She stood back, trying not to smile. Who would have guessed that Ted was such an expert on ladies wear? He seemed very open about it – leggings, pop socks, and now pashminas, what else did he have in his repertoire? Whatever people get up to in the comfort of their own home is entirely their own business, Felicity reminded herself liberally. Yet, she couldn’t wait to tell her mother.

Ted meanwhile had re-tied the scarf leaving one long swathe which swung like a pendulum, and woke poor Edna up with a start. “That’ll scare the birds”, he grinned. “I beg your pardon?” Felicity objected to her girls being called ‘birds’. “The pigeons”, Ted said, “this is how I tie my scarecrow’s scarf”. “Scarecrow?” Felicity was confused. “You don’t wear them yourself?” “Why would I wear a lady’s scarf?” from the man who was clearly wearing a lady’s scarf. “What about leggings?” “My long johns?” He patted his thighs, “the missus insists on them when I’m at the allotment”. “Pop socks?” Felicity raised her eyebrow. “To support my prize-winning cucumbers”, he said, “what on earth did you think I do with them?” Felicity decided it was best not to say. “Thank you Ted”, she smiled, “it’s been enlightening”.

New Costa in Stubbington to be at heart of Local Community thanks to youth FC sponsorship Stubbington Football Club has a brand new Costa store in its home town to thank for sponsorship of its popular under sevens team – including new kits - for the 2014/15 season. The new 1300 sq ft Costa store which officially opened on 31st May in Stubbington Green promises to be the hub of the local community, demonstrated by its decision to sponsor the junior team of the town’s main football club. The outlet will create 8 new jobs in the area and provide much needed training and apprenticeship opportunities for young people. Premier Coffee, the Southamptonbased franchise company behind the new store, is a strong supporter of helping young people from across the South get back into employment, offering them training and apprenticeship opportunities both in-store and at its dedicated Costa Training Academy which opened in 2012 in Southampton City Centre. The company has already trained more than 100 apprentices to date across the South. Craig Fenton from Stubbington FC says: “We’re delighted Stubbington’s new Costa store has decided to sponsor our under sevens team. It not only demonstrates huge support for

Stubbington Football Club but also for the young people of our community. We wish the Costa team much success with their new store.” Matt Coulthard, Costa’s Operations Manager added: “We want to imbed ourselves as part of the community and what better way to do that than involve ourselves with Stubbington Football Club and the young people of the town. “We’re delighted many of the Club’s young players will be at the official opening of our new store and we look forward to welcoming the local community to enjoy the Costa experience with us.” So, what can Stubbington residents look forward to from their new favourite coffee shop? Local man Tom Dollamore will manage the new store having started as an apprentice in Costa’s Gosport store just two years ago. Now a store manager, Tom can’t wait to bring the nation’s favourite coffee and the customer service that goes with it to Stubbington. Costa is creating employment for 8 local residents, all of whom have been provided with comprehensive barista training to be able to serve customers with Costa’s full range of delicious coffees, using the Ferrari of coffee machines that Costa employs throughout all its stores.

So, whether you have time to relax and enjoy your cup or you are grabbing a take out, fabulous coffee is to be expected. Costa welcomes everyone. Think of the new Costa as your own sitting room, toddler group or office away from your office, making use of the free wi-fi in our wheelchair friendly cafe. Come and relax and let Costa take care of the coffee. Don’t forget your ‘Buy One Get One Free’ vouchers which have been distributed to over 6000 households around Stubbington. About Costa Costa was founded by Italian brothers Sergio and Bruno Costa in 1971. Just 1% of the world’s production of coffee is good enough for us to choose from. Only the very best 100% RFA certified coffee available can go into creating the unique taste and aroma of our Mocha Italia blend. The Costa Foundation was set up in 2006 to give something back to the communities within the countries from which Costa sources its coffee beans. The Costa Foundation works with an independent charity partner, Charities Trust, and is operating under the auspices of Charities Trust’s registered charity number 327489. Costa Ltd is part of the Whitbread Group PLC.

RECIPE

Lemon Curd Cookies Crisp and buttery with a tangy lemon flavour these delicious home-made cookies taste divine. You can change the flavourings if liked, try orange zest with fine shred marmalade or replace 1tbsp of the flour with cocoa powder and fill with chocolate and hazelnut spread for a moreish choc and nut version!

Ingredients:

Now get started...

• 50g butter, softened

1.

Place the butter and sugar in a large bowl and beat together until light and fluffy. Beat in the lemon zest and egg then sift over the flour and mix to a crumbly dough.

2.

Gather the mixture together with your hands and knead on a floured surface until smooth. Flatten to a disc shape, wrap in cling film and chill in the fridge for about 45 minutes.

3.

Preheat the oven to 180°C/160°F/gas mark 4. Line two baking sheets with baking parchment.

4.

Roll the dough out on a lightly floured surface to a 5mm thickness and using a 6cm round cookie cutter stamp out 16 circles, re-rolling the dough as necessary.

5.

Place the circles of dough on the baking sheets. Spoon about ½ teaspoon of lemon curd in the centre of each circle then pull up two sides of the each circle and pinch together tightly to seal. Chill in the fridge for a further 30 minutes.

6.

Bake in the preheated oven for 12-14 minutes until pale golden. Cool for 5 minutes then transfer to a wire cooling rack and leave to cool completely. Serve dusted with icing sugar.

• 1 tsp finely grated lemon zest • 85g caster sugar • 1 medium egg, beaten • 175g plain flour, plus extra for dusting • 4 tbsp good quality lemon curd • Icing sugar, for dusting

TIP The chilled dough will keep in the fridge for 2-3 days. Leave at room temperature for about 20 minutes to allow the dough to soften a little before rolling out otherwise it may crack.

Makes 16 - Ready in 30 minutes plus chilling

Charity of the Month - RSPCA RSPCA Stubbington Ark Animal Shelter The Stubbington Ark is the focus for local animal welfare services covering 400 sq.miles including the Portsmouth and Southampton area. It provides shelter for all manner of animals, domestic, wildlife, farm stock and exotics and there are usually more than 500 animals on site at any one time. As you can imagine our running costs are extremely high and we have to raise over £3,400 per day to keep the shelter running. One of the largest RSPCA animal shelters in the country, operating the Stubbington Ark Animal Shelter, the Stubbington Ark Charity Shop in Fareham, as well as the Veterinary Clinic and Swaythling Centre in Southampton. We are an independent, self funding charity that receives NO Government or Lottery funding. Less then 3% of our £1.4 million a year running costs comes from the RSPCA.

To keep the Ark afloat we rely on donations and the generosity of our supporters, volunteers and the business community. Can you help? BEDDING APPEAL We urgently need old blankets, sheets, pillow cases and duvet covers. Sorry we cannot accept Duvets or Pillows TOYS WANTED Supplies of toys for our animals to play with are running low, so if you have any new or pre-loved toys (good condition please) Bring them along to the shelter. Rubber rings, tug chews, cat toys all gratefully received. CAT FOOD WANTED Due to the high increase in our cat intake we desperately need donations of cat food. All brands but especially Whiskas and Felix (all varieties) THANK YOU The Stubbington Ark (RSPCA Solent Branch) Animal Shelter 174-176 Ranvilles Lane PO14 3EZ Fareham, Hants GB Tel 01329 667541
