It’s funny how trends can go full circle. Retail fashions swing from boutiques, to department stores, then department stores with boutiques and now it’s back to boutiques again. Housing estates were replaced by modern high rise flats only to be replaced by housing estates again. And it’s the same with community magazines. Yes, you can pick up local news on Facebook and websites but a quality local magazine is a friendly “face” that’s appreciated and welcomed by its community. I say quality because if a magazine’s just full of adverts it will go in the bin. If it’s too big, it doesn’t fit in the kitchen drawer or looks messy by the phone, it’s binned at clear up time. If it’s full of advertisers and editorial too far from home and it’s not relevant to the reader, it’s binned. You reading this issue is proof enough that Discover passes the “bin” test! We’ve been publishing local magazines for over ten years now and believe we’ve got the formula right; a nice size, a good balance of editorial with advertising, local stories and information and a light entertaining read for all the family. Our radio advert inviting community news is aired on The Breeze and its slogan “Read it. Keep it. Use it.” says it all. Many advertisers come to us as they’ve seen a copy of Discover in the houses they visit; by the phone, by the bed, adverts torn out and on the fridge and yes, many in the downstairs loo (not in the loo!). So, where will you keep yours? A Local Voice for Local People In case you are wondering what happened to the long standing Informer and Solent Life magazines, we’ve got the full story on p9. We’d like to pick up where The Informer left off and make Discover the first point of contact if your group, church, organisation or charity has something you want to share; contact me by email, phone or online!

An Informer-Less Locks Heath As a local resident you may be wondering what happened to the regular delivery of The Informer and Solent Life, two magazines published in Locks Heath. Sadly, after running for 25 years and under a brief spell of new ownership, the publications are unlikely to be seen again. After months of uncertainty the staff and distributors have left, most unpaid and understandably unhappy. After only a few months of owning the publications, the owner, Kevin Dunstall, was declared bankrupt on 16 March 2015. And the businesses in the area – dependent on advertising to keep the calls coming in – were left in the dark. A Facebook Page for advertisers was set up called Informer-Less Locks Heath in a bid to find out if and when their much needed advertising was going to hit the streets. After a series of broken promises and weak management of the situation operations became unrecoverable. So What Went Wrong? In 2013 The Informer, family run for 25 years, went into administration and local 2004 – 2015 Discover’s Story – 2004 – Chandlers Ford – 2007 – Southampton – 2011 – Meon Valley – 2012 – Totton – 2012 – Bitterne – 2012 – Romsey – 2012 – Itchen Valley – 2013 – Winchester – 2013 – Locks Heath – 2014 – Hythe & Lyndhurst – 2015 – SP5 Salisbury & Stockbridge

magazine owners were invited to put in a bid to buy the title. Unfortunately, Discover was outbid by the owner of Solent Life and over the next two years one team ran both titles side by side. Evidently, the formula proved less successful than hoped and its debts were sold in January. Solent Life and Informer were in the hands of a new business but with the same team except Dave Hills, the editor, who left. Understandably, in the hope of continued employment (and payment) staff put on a brave face. However, the advertisers’ patience ran out when a handful of copies appeared and it became apparent that these were passed off as a larger print run that didn’t happen. There is Life beyond “Solent Life”! The success of a local magazine is that it needs to be relevant to the reader so it’s kept, read and used thus benefitting the advertisers who make the free magazine possible. Combine this with a format that’s comfortable to read, a size that’s easy to keep, a healthy balance of interesting editorial with advertising and local information and you will have a well-respected and successful magazine for many years to come. And this is where Discover steps in. Although this edition of the Discover
Magazine started in 2013, being honest, The Informer was a hard competitor to beat. The residents gave them the lion’s share of the local news, and they had a loyal advertising base. Being that we are already ‘up and running’ in the area, we are now taking on the mantle of being Locks Heath’s No.1 community magazine. We’ve taken this opportunity to develop the magazine with a mini design facelift and an increase in page size by 25%. We hope you like it! HEALTH
Top Tips for Healthy Teeth By Alison Runham
18th May marks the start of National Smile Month, a campaign to improve our oral health –something that’s more important than you may think. Research has linked gum disease to serious health problems. But we brush our teeth properly, don’t we? And visit the dentist regularly?
10
If you’re squirming now, then rest assured you’re not alone. Many of us detest visiting the dentist and dodge regular check-ups. As for our toothbrushes; raise your hand if you know when you last changed yours. Maybe a few reminders wouldn’t go amiss.
Brush Properly:
• Look after your toothbrush. Check it regularly for splayed or split bristles, and rinse and dry it after every use to make sure bacteria are removed. Store it somewhere it will stay clean, not on a surface where it’s likely to be smothered in talc or hairspray. • Change your toothbrush or electric toothbrush head every 3 months – even if it looks pristine. • Use the right toothbrush. Don’t presume firm bristles do a better job; they may damage gums, and gums need just as much care as your teeth. Choose a brush with soft to medium round-ended bristles and a small to medium head. Tests have shown that electric toothbrushes are more effective than manual ones, so they’re worth the investment. • Use the right tools. Your standard toothbrush, however good it may be, won’t penetrate all the crevices between your teeth, so use floss or an interdental brush too. If you find it hard to develop a good technique with them, ask your
dentist or hygienist for tips. • Develop a good brushing technique. To remove bacteriaharbouring plaque efficiently, hold your brush so that the bristles are at a 45° angle to the gum line for the outer surfaces of your teeth, and tilt it vertically to reach inner surfaces. Small circular movements are best. Try to vary the place you start brushing, so that the same teeth don’t always suffer the end-ofsession brushing, which may be less enthusiastic and careful.
Keeping Plaque at Bay:
• Brush often. Try to brush at least twice a day to remove food, plaque and bacteria. Don’t overdo it though – brushing more than three times daily may do more harm than good. After every meal is ideal (to feel truly virtuous, take a travel toothbrush to work and brush after lunch). • Follow a teeth-friendly diet. Acidic drinks and foods such as citrus fruit and pure fruit juices are major tooth-damage culprits, as are sugary products and fizzy drinks. Save them for meal times when their effects are reduced. Don’t be fooled into thinking diet fizzy drinks are the answer, as these contain high levels of phosphates that can damage teeth too. Why not try making healthier fizzy drinks by combining sparkling water

and sugar-free squash? If you must drink sugary, fizzy or acidic drinks, use a straw to reduce their contact with your teeth and gums, and don’t be tempted to chew those ice cubes – they can cause invisible cracks which could cause trouble later (see ‘respect your teeth’ below). Carbohydrates can damage teeth too, so think twice before you swap that chocolate bar for a packet of crisps or order the extra large pizza.
Remember: Prevention is better than Cure, so: • Find a dentist you’re happy with. Location is important, but it may be worth travelling further for a dentist you trust. The NHS website lists dentists in your area and indicates which accept NHS patients: http://www.nhs. uk/Service-Search/Dentist/ LocationSearch/3. Private dentists often offer payment
plans, but ensure you’re clear about what’s included. Check their opening hours suit you, read testimonials and ask friends, family and colleagues for opinions and recommendations too. It’s also worth checking their credentials and enquiring if they’re qualified to offer other services such as implants, cosmetic dentistry or orthodontics. The Care Quality Commission is the independent regulator of health and social care in England, and their reports on dentists can be found here: http://www.cqc.org. uk/search/services/dentists. • Visit your dentist regularly. It’s not always pleasant or cheap, but it could save you money (and pain) long-term. • Use good quality dental products approved by a professional dental association (e.g. the British Dental Association). Buy toothpastes and mouthwashes
Locks Heath Swim Squad Locks Heath Swim Squad sent a team of twelve mainly inexperienced swimmers to compete at the Hants and South Coast Invitational meet held at Woking which resulted in 29 Personal bests. Star performer of the evening was 10 year old May Fletcher who came first in her 50 Meter Freestyle and butterfly with her also being on the top of the podium in the 10 year old age group. Isla Croll age 9 managed 9th place in her age group category whilst 11 year old Joseph Ford finished in 6th position in his age group, gaining personal bests in all his events. Ella Richardson Fitt and Joshua Beaudro finished in 6th place in their respective 50 metre backstroke events. Other swimmers on the night were Scott Hutin, Matthew and Taylor Collins, Joshua Norris, Mia Day, Isabel Barbary and Imogen Crowney. This was an extremely well run event and provided valuable experience for the younger swimmers who gained a creditable 4th place in the 10 year olds combined team scores out of the 11 competing teams and winners Haselmere. 12
high in fluoride to keep your tooth enamel healthy and reverse tooth damage. • Respect your teeth. Resist the urge to use them as bottle openers, scissors and extra hands. This can cause tiny invisible cracks that can encourage decay and they may make the tooth splinter later. • Get things straight. Crooked or overlapping teeth can make good oral hygiene difficult. Ask your dentist for advice – it’s no longer unusual for adults to have braces, and some braces are now invisible. • Give up smoking. Smoking stains teeth and reduces blood flow in the gums, making smokers more prone to gum disease and tooth loss. If your teeth are healthy and your breath is fresh every month can be National Smile Month, so grab that brush and make a date with your dentist.

Top 5 Eco Cars
By James Baggott @CarDealerEd
As the costs to run our beloved petrol- and diesel-powered cars increase, it’s no wonder we’re all on the hunt for an alternative solution. With electric and hybrid powertrains driving some of the industry’s most esteemed supercars – the new Honda NSX and BMW i8 – it would appear that there is another way forward. But if eco is at the forefront of your mind, which car should you have on your driveway? Here are our choices. Ford Fiesta The Fiesta is the best selling car on the market – and not without good reason. Although it’s not labelled an official ‘eco’ car, its low running costs make it the ideal cost-effective solution for most buyers. Choose the 1.4-litre TDCi, priced from £13,065, and you can expect an average mileage of 68mpg and emissions of 107g/km. Fiat 500 The Fiat 500 completes the ‘Thee Musketeers’ line-up, alongside the Mini and VW Beetle, as one of today’s most stylish cars. Running a 1.2-litre engine, the 500 TwinAir can achieve 49.6 urban mpg and dodges road tax by emitting just 95g/km of CO2. The TwinAir is priced from £12,715 and is the perfect city run around. BMW i3 BMW’s futuristic i3 is one of just a few cars that has revolutionised the way we view the future of motoring. Not only does it combine eco-friendly driving with premium qualities, it can also reach 93mph, can go from 0-60mph in 7.9 seconds and has a driving range of 106 miles, thanks to its onboard petrol motor, which works alongside a 127kW electric unit. Sadly, its £29,130 price means we don’t see many of them on the road. Volkswagen E-Up! The E-Up! is one of the most practical and reasonably-priced electric cars on the market, with five doors and an estimated driving range of 93 miles. It takes six hours to recharge and has a comfortable top speed of 81mph. The price isn’t so attractive at £19,525, but this electric motor is close to feeling more like the average supermini. Renault Twizy Renault’s Twizy is just as fun as it looks. It may be the slowest of the pack, with a top speed of just 56mph, but it’s guaranteed to provide you with the most entertainment. Priced at £7,795, its 15kW battery takes four hour to charge, it has a driving range of 62 miles and emits zero emissions. And just look at its styling!

GARDENING
Making a pest of
themselves By Pippa Greenwood They might be small but aphids - widely known as greenfly and blackfly - are one of the most common and widespread garden pests, with more than five hundred different species found in the United Kingdom alone. Greenfly and blackfly vary in colour, from green or black to grey, yellow, pink, brown or kaki. The majority are about 2mm long
Most damage is done throughout spring and summer but there are aphids feeding somewhere pretty well throughout the year. In sheltered parts of your garden or in greenhouses and conservatories, some can be found even during the cooler winter months. They can breed rapidly and this is often done asexually or without need of a male. For much of the year females are predominant and give birth to huge numbers of genetically identical offspring. The symptoms they cause include leaf yellowing or other brightly coloured discolouration, puckering, poor growth and stunting. The plant sap on which the aphids feed has an extremely high sugar content; in fact it is so sugary that the aphids cannot digest it all, so their excreta is very sticky and sugary. This is called ‘honeydew’ and you may have noticed it beneath aphidinfested plants. Because it is so sugary, honeydew attracts harmless but unattractive black ‘sooty moulds’. On roses there are several species of aphid which may attack, often forming dense colonies on shoot tips, new leaf growth and flower buds. These aphids are mostly green, pinkish or yellowish in colour
16
and up to 3mm long. If vegetables are more your thing then you may see the black bean aphid as it forms dense colonies especially at the shoot tips and beneath the leaves of broad beans in the spring. If you pinch out the aphid-encrusted shoot tips on beans the problem is often solved. Another common one is the woolly aphid which attacks apple trees and is also often seen on ornamental Malus such as crab apples, pyracantha and cotoneaster. Colonies of the aphid covered with white, waxy, fluffy fibres develop on the bark, especially near pruning cuts on older stems, or on younger stems where they also cause swellings on the stem. It is pretty well impossible to garden without aphids causing some grief – the best you can do is to reduce their numbers. Encouraging naturally occurring predators such as blue tits, ladybirds, hoverflies and lacewings will all help. In some situations it is also worth introducing biological controls and these work especially well in an enclosed area such as a greenhouse or conservatory. Aphid predators such as the larva of the midge Aphidoletes
and even ladybirds, can all be purchased, as can the tiny parasitic wasp Aphidius. Ladybirds (available from my website, www.pippagreenwood. com) are perfect for using on aphid outbreaks anywhere in the garden from pots and borders to hanging baskets and hedges. The great thing with these is that, once established they will start to breed and add to the natural ladybird population. There are a number of different chemicals (including organic or ‘green’ ones such as those based on fatty acids or plant oils) available for controlling aphid pests too, but not all are suitable for use on every plant, so check the label carefully before buying or using, and always follow the instructions carefully. Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood.com for ladybirds and other biocontrols to control greenfly, Nemaslug, brilliant weeders, pop-up crop covers, copper tape and lots more besides.

Tree-mendous fun at the Tree Trail! Lucky youngsters from Locks Heath Junior School got in touch with nature at Warsash Common this Spring. The pupils were able to take part in a range of engaging activities including a Tree Trail talk from one of the Council’s Countryside Officers; pond dipping; looking at animal foot prints and sketching. New to the site, the Tree Trail is an educational path that features twelve native species (including a large apple tree with hanging poems) with individual information sheets containing interesting ecological and botanical facts.

Should I start my business from scratch or buy an existing one? Investing in a “going concern” brings the security of trading history, established customers, suppliers and staff who already have relationships with your customers. On the downside, you have to pay for it. While starting a business from scratch gives the owner a completely blank canvass, there are significant hidden start-up costs not to mention a high degree of risk. Found empty premises of the right size, location, rent and lease terms? Are the premises approved for your intended use? All commercial premises are classified by your local authority’s Planning Department and planning consent will be needed if you want to change the current permitted use. The application process will take at least 8 weeks and you will have to pay £385 just to find out if your proposed use will be permitted. As a rough guide, florist shops, hairdressers and sandwich bars are classified as A1. Restaurants, snack bars and cafés selling hot food for consumption on the premises are A3. Hot food take-aways such as Fish & Chip shops, pizza and burger bars are A5. Will your premises need new flooring, lighting and heating? Have you sourced and worked out the cost of all the essential equipment? There are strict Health & Safety laws protecting staff and customers - non-slip floors, hand wash stations, disabled access and 20
staff rest rooms, for example. Your business plan will identify how long it takes to hit the monthly sales and profit targets needed to cover your monthly rent, rates, insurance, utilities and staff wages. Don’t forget that on top of these fixed monthly costs there is also the question of risk. What guarantee is there that your customers will support your new business within your estimated time scale?

Champion Cheering Earlier this year, Cheer-a-cality entered their first ever cheerleading competition for the Southern division and won! They then had only three weeks to raise £700 to support them through to the next level of the competition. Due to endless efforts the money was raised and so the squad headed to Nottingham’s Capital FM arena. The day was overwhelming, exciting and unforgettable when they were crowned National Champions and 1st place in their division. It has been an exciting first year competing for the squad and they are always looking for more cheerleaders to join in the fun. Cheer-a-cality can be seen at various summer fetes and holiday camps this summer.

Local Solicitor Now Has Dream Job Mandy Tourle worked as a Solicitor at Eric Robinson Hedge End until earlier this year, specialising in Probate law, Lasting Powers of Attorney, Wills and Trust, and qualified as a member of the Society for Trust and Estate Practitioners. But when she decided on a change of direction, she thought of her dream job and created her own business. Mandy set up Paperwise Solutions to help people cope with paperwork, after she
experienced first-hand what tackling a mountain of red tape is like after losing a loved one. Mandy, from Hedge End, said, “When Grandad died I helped my mother and my aunt with all the paperwork, as it was a lot for them to cope with. I already dealt with this type of work in my job and understood the bureaucracy that surrounded it, but until you are faced with losing a loved one you cannot appreciate the emotional turmoil that comes with it. As time went on, I realised there was a need for someone like me to help people become more organised, especially older people, whether they have lost a partner or not.” She said, “People may be facing life on their own, or
they may have a life partner who is ailing and they want to get on top of things. They may just want to learn to be more organised or to learn new skills such as mastering the internet to be able to do online shopping – I can help with all that.” Mandy’s services are available to all, not just older people, and include helping people organise and de-clutter their homes. She is also available to give free talks to groups of people – offering tips on how to become more organised. Mandy’s new business does not provide legal services and is not regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority.

RECIPE
Healthy Herby Stuffed Baked Tomatoes
Serves: 2-4 Ready in: 1 hour
Large and juicy beefsteak tomatoes are the perfect shape and size for stuffing and make an economical midweek supper. Serve hot or cold with a crisp green salad drizzled with a tangy balsamic glaze.
1. Preheat the oven to 190C, 375F, Gas 5.
INGREDIENTS 4 firm beefsteak tomatoes 3 tbsp Virgin olive oil 1 onion, peeled and finely chopped 2 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed 75g fresh white breadcrumbs 2 tbsp fresh chopped parsley 1 tbsp fresh chopped mint 2 tsp capers, drained and rinsed Salt and freshly ground black pepper
3. Use a teaspoon to scoop out the seeds and flesh from each tomato. Finely chop and reserve the flesh but discard the seeds. Place the tomato shells in a shallow ovenproof dish.
24
2. Use a sharp knife to slice the tops off the tomatoes and slice a thin sliver from the base of each tomato to prevent them wobbling in the dish.
4. Heat half the olive oil in a medium-sized frying pan. Add the chopped onion and fry over a medium-high heat
for 5 minutes until beginning to soften. Add the garlic and fry for a further 4-5 minutes until tender and golden. Stir in the chopped tomato flesh, breadcrumbs, parsley, mint and capers and season well with salt and freshly ground black pepper. 5. Spoon the breadcrumb mixture into the tomato shells, pressing it down gently then top with the lids. Drizzle over the rest of the olive oil and bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes until the tomatoes are just tender. Serve hot or cold.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Justin Friel feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving
people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Locks Heath & Whiteley areas and Justin is finding that his
approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve
done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Justin a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Saving for Children – What are the Best Options? By Ann Haldon
Children’s savings accounts provide a great way to build a nest egg for later life, perhaps for driving lessons or to fund a gap year, and are a good way to introduce the subject of money management. We look at three savings options below that could be ideal for your child. These are products that incorporate a range of features and benefits, including tax-free status, instant access, and longer savings terms.
So let’s start with a product that was first introduced in 2011:
own accounts when they reach 16 years of age.
Junior ISAs Junior ISAs are available to children under the age of 18 who don’t already have a Child Trust Fund. New legislation has recently been introduced to allow the transfer of monies from a Child Trust Fund into a Junior ISA, however, and this is due to take effect from April 2015.
The Junior ISA will be in the child’s name, but parents and guardians opening the account are the ‘registered contacts’ as far as the bank or building society is concerned.
The contribution limit for a Junior ISA is £4,000 for the 2014-15 tax year, and there are two types of account available: • Cash Junior ISA: offering tax-free interest and instant access • Stocks and Shares Junior ISA: cash is invested in stocks and shares, with no tax paid on dividends or capital growth Children are entitled to open one of each of these accounts, and although parents or guardians can open and manage them, the money belongs to the child. Withdrawals by children are not allowed until they turn 18, but they can manage their
34
NS&I Children’s Bonds These are tax-free investments that run for a 5-year term. They can be purchased by a parent, guardian, grandparent or great grandparent on behalf of a child, and each ‘issue’ has its own guaranteed rate of interest which is paid at the end of the term. The minimum investment amount for these Bonds is £25, with £3,000 being the maximum amount allowed per issue. Interest is calculated daily and added to the account each year, so that the child also benefits from compound interest. Children’s savings accounts These types of account can be opened with as little as £1, with most bank and building societies offering at least one savings account for children. In most cases money can be withdrawn with no notice.
Once a child reaches the age of seven they may be able to manage the account themselves, which is a great way for them to learn how to deal with their money. There are two different types of children’s savings accounts, and you can open more than one: • Easy access: the interest rate will probably be lower with an easy or instant access account, but money can be withdrawn or deposited with no restrictions. These accounts are popular with children as many of them offer free gifts, including piggy banks and toys. • Regular savings: interest rates will be slightly higher for this type of account, but money is not accessible and you need to make regular monthly deposits into the account. If any payments are missed you may suffer a reduction of interest. Which savings account you choose for your child depends on your own circumstances. The Junior ISA has proven to be very popular, and the new legislation regarding transfer of monies from a Child Trust Fund to a Junior ISA opens up the product to more people.

Solent Branch of the Embroiderers’ Guild The Solent Branch of the Embroiderers’ Guild continues to be a very active group. The panel that is being created as part of the “Embroidery of the Century” for the charity War Child continues to grow and we have started the next round of Travelling Books whereby members create small embroideries in sketch books that get passed around the members. At the end of the six month cycle, the participants will have a book to treasure with lovely examples of work by our members. On Monday 18th May 2015 the Solent Branch of the Embroiderers’ Guild welcome back Arthur Ridley, an amazing textile artist with such enthusiasm for the creation of embroideries. He will be talking about his Life in Embroidery. Visit his website to get a flavour of the variety and beauty of his work: www.arthur-ridley. com. If you would like to join, please come along. You will be made very welcome. The group meets in the Parish Rooms in Titchfield, PO14 4AQ, every third Monday of the month, 7pm for 7.30pm. Visitors £5. For more details please contact Margaret Mainwaring 01329 285825 or Gemma Bridges by email; gemmabridges@gmail.com or visit www.solenteg.blogspot.com to see the full programme of events and workshops throughout 2015.

Solent Coasts Cycling Challenge The 13th Solent Coasts Cycling Challenge will be held on 27th June 2015. The 66 mile circular route follows the Hampshire and Isle of Wight coasts with stunning views over the Solent and especially fine views of the yachts competing in the Round the Island Race. Although there are off road sections, there are alternative routes for “road” bikes. Included within the registration fee are tickets for six cross Solent and local ferries. This fun day out raises money (riders are asked to gain minimum sponsorship of £125) for the UK humanitarian aid charity Hope and Aid Direct. Volunteers within the charity fundraise and collect donated aid which is then taken personally to families living in extreme poverty and to victims of disasters both in the UK and abroad. So why not have a great day out and raise money for a worthwhile cause. More information and online registration can be found at: www.solentchallenge.org.uk
