Come out of the Cold with First Call In 1993 James Walker decided to walk away from his job as a service engineer because he realised that he could do a better, more reliable and economical job for people by working on his own. So he set up First Call Heating and 21 years later is still looking for ways to improve his company and help his customers when they realise that their long-serving boiler has given up the ghost. First Call Heating is now a local, well thought of heating company operating from their showroom in Falkland Court, Chandlers Ford. They train and employ local engineers and only cover the SO and PO postal areas so are always ready to respond in that critical situation when the boiler fails and your home is starting to feel like Iceland. When a customer’s boiler breaks down, First Call has always been great at responding to calls, being rated at 9.9 by reviewers on the Checkatrade website. With a competitive hourly rate and a good supply of local parts, boilers are never cold for long. However with a service like this there is always a price to pay and with the average boiler repair 2 ADVERTISING FEATURE

being between £150-£250 it’s sometimes difficult to find that sort of money straight away. With his years of experience and through listening to customers, engineer Ben Rood helped First Call come up with the perfect solution: 3 simple plans that cover the cost of an average breakdown, no matter how any times a year it goes wrong, The top level of cover is ‘Total Care’. As the name suggests it covers all boiler, controls, hot water cylinder, radiators pipe work and everything associated with the heating system, all for just £21.99 per month, and includes a full annual boiler service. Some people only want to cover the boiler and controls, so this is where ‘Boiler Care’ steps in. This covers all the boiler components and associated controls, competitively priced at just £15.99 per month again

including a full annual boiler service. First Call Heating fit around 300 boilers a year all of which come with guarantees of up to 10 years. This is also covered by the Heating Care plan which tops up the boiler guarantee to include the radiators, valves and associated pipework for just £12.99 per month. Again this includes the annual full boiler service as required under the boiler’s guarantee. To find out more about the great boiler cover from First Call Heating visit firstcallheating. co.uk or call today on 02380 262690 and remember their motto: “Relax we have it covered“.

Big Surprises come in Small Packages Not long ago, business success was judged by a swanky office or a shiny showroom. A receptionist would welcome you through the door and the car park was full of company cars with the MD’s Jag in prime position marked “RESERVED”. But welcome to 2014. These days, home based business are often Melanie Tinson just as successful, with highly skilled people able to provide great service but with lower overheads sometimes but not always leading to particularly competitive prices. And we are testament to that. Discover Magazines is the biggest local magazine publisher in this area, but you wouldn’t know it by the size of our office. We have always operated successfully and efficiently from our homes. Clearly premises open to the public can add credibility (and sometimes are necessary – not too many car servicing businesses are run from the spare room!). But Discover is keen to support the good ‘one man band’ businesses that don’t have an office or showroom and are home based. If an advert doesn’t include an address or landline number then it’s likely the business is mobile without a formal office. With modern technology, mobile phones and cloud computing, working remotely, on the move or from home has become a very acceptable way of running a company. So, if you use Discover to find a local company and want to check out their credentials ask for proof of professional memberships, insurance and references rather than what their address is. As you can imagine, we do come across some dodgy, fly-by-night businesses wanting to advertise and disappear without paying. We know the signs; we hear of reputations and we will decline advertising from poor payers or very unreliable communicators. We can’t catch them all though, so if you have a bad experience with any of our advertisers please feel free to inform us. If you’ve had a good one, we’d love to hear it, too.

BAKING

Lamingtons

These scrumptious small Australian cakes are made with a whisked light and buttery sponge which is coated in a quick chocolate icing and desiccated coconut. They may be a little fiddly to make but it’s well worth the effort!

Ingredients: SPONGE • 4 large eggs • 115g caster sugar • 115g plain flour, sifted • 40g unsalted butter, melted and cooled

ICING AND COATING • 450g icing sugar • 50g cocoa powder • 70g unsalted butter, melted • 225g desiccated coconut

1. Preheat the oven to 180°C/160°C fan/gas 4. Grease a

23cm square cake tin and line the base with baking paper.

2. To make the sponge, place the eggs and sugar in a

heatproof bowl set over a pan of simmering water. Whisk together with a hand-held electric whisk until the mixture is very thick and pale and leaves a trail on the surface when the whisk is lifted. Remove the bowl from the saucepan.

3. Sift over the flour and fold in gently then pour over the

melted butter and fold in until just incorporated. Pour the mixture into the prepared cake tin. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until risen, golden and springy to the touch. Cool in the tin for 5 minutes then turn the cake out onto a wire rack and leave to cool completely. Cut the cold cake into 9 squares.

TIP

4. To make the icing, sift the icing sugar and cocoa powder

Pop the sponge squares in the freezer for 10-15 minutes before coating in the icing – they will be a little firmer to handle and the icing will set more quickly.

5. Spread the coconut on a large flat plate. Take each sponge

into a large bowl. Stir in the melted butter and 75ml boiling water and beat with a wooden spoon until smooth. square and dip in the chocolate icing to coat completely, using two forks to gently turn the sponge square. Lift the coated square out of the icing and shake to allow any excess icing to fall back into the bowl.

6. Roll the iced square in the coconut to coat all over. Place on a board lined with baking paper and leave to set. Repeat with the rest of the sponge squares.

Planning for Building Work by Katherine Sorrell

Thinking of getting the builders in? Forward planning is vital. Our expert has some handy advice.

Ready, Steady, Go? It may sound obvious, but do you know exactly what work needs doing to your home? Think structure first, then decoration. Are the walls and roof safe and sound? Is the house warm enough in winter? How good is your boiler – have you got hot water whenever you need it? Do your windows stick; do your stairs creak, do your gutters drip or is your plaster crumbling away? Aim to get all the boring but necessary repairs and renovations out of the way – you might want to look for tradespeople (from builders to carpenters, electricians to plumbers) in the pages of this magazine – before turning your attention to paint colours, floorings and soft furnishings. Then sort out your budget, agree a programme of work and get ready to make a few cups of tea.

DIY SAFETY

Before Work Starts

If you want your project to run as smoothly as possible, make sure you get the following issues sorted in advance: • Hours to be worked • Access to the house (especially if you won’t be living there), and security • Parking • Storage of tools and other equipment • Who is responsible for clearing the working area in advance, and cleaning up afterwards • Use of a WC, and a sink to clean tools • Disposal of rubbish • Use of power points • Potential aggravation to neighbours (anything from loud building noise to playing a radio)

Keep safety first and foremost if you’re doing any building work yourself. Never attempt any work that you are not competent to handle and, if it involves gas or electricity, call in a professional. If necessary, take the time to do a course, read a book or at least watch relevant internet videos. Use the right tool for the job, and ensure it’s in good working order before you start. Make sure you know how to use hire tools properly. Wear appropriate clothing, keep pets and children out of the way, tie long hair back and don’t smoke on the job. Heavy lifting to be done? Get help at the appropriate time. Be especially careful when using a ladder, don’t rush or cut corners, and store tools and equipment safely. Ventilate any areas where there are fumes or a great deal of dust and, last but by no means least, keep a first aid kit handy, just in case. 16

Rules and Regulations

Before you start any building work – and especially if it’s a major change such as an extension or conversion – find out whether or not you need to obtain planning permission from your local authority. Go to planningportal.gov.uk/permission for lots of information. If you live in a listed building, green belt or a conservation area, you should be especially careful to get the necessary consents – it is a criminal offence to fail to apply for listed building consent when required, for example, so it is always worth checking with your local planning authority. You may also be surprised to find that Building Regulations cover most aspects of work to your home, from the energy efficiency of new windows to electrical installations. It is important that you comply with them, because if you don’t you could be asked to alter or remove the work. You would also have problems when you come to sell your property. Confirm with your builder that he is taking responsibility for compliance – and get the necessary documentation to prove it once the work is finished. If you are doing the work yourself, talk to the building control department of your local authority.

18

GOING GREEN? Now is the time to decide on any environmentally friendly features that could save you money (and the planet) in the long run. Some eco measures, such as ground source heat pumps and wind turbines, are best suited for new builds or topto-toe renovations, but others – solar panels and rainwater recycling, for example – are more easily achievable. And don’t overlook the straightforward options, including fitting double or secondary glazing, installing water-saving showerheads and insulating your loft. Even tiny moves such as connecting an energy monitor or switching to energy-saving light bulbs can make a big difference. For more information, go to www. energysavingtrust.org.uk. TECHNOLOGY

Some Like It Hot Technology taking the expense out of heating your home With summer a rapidly fading memory it’s likely that you’ve had the central heating on for weeks or even months. With energy prices constantly increasing, a few simple bits of kit can make a huge difference to your outgoings. One of the simplest changes you can make is to replace your boiler’s old timer with a modern digital programmer, such as Siemens’ RWB29. This £45 device enables you to set different times for weekdays and weekends, and you can set three different heating times per day. Installing it and any similar programmer isn’t a particularly difficult job and the extra control it offers can help reduce your heating bills. Another option is to invest in thermostatic radiator valves, or TRVs for short. With prices starting at around £7, TRVs are simple to fit and enable you to set different temperatures in different rooms, so for example you might set the bedrooms to be several degrees cooler than the living room. You can even get digital ones such as the Terrier i-temp i30, which enables you to set up to 6 different temperature settings per day - handy if the 22

room’s temperature is subject to outside factors such as late afternoon sunshine. For many of us our heating systems are fairly low tech, but that’s changing with the arrival of systems such as British Gas’s Hive. Hive connects your boiler to your broadband, and that means you can control it with a smartphone app. You might override the heating settings because you’re coming home later than expected, keep an eye on your daily energy use, or just show off by turning the heating on and off when you’re at work. British Gas reckons that the £199 Hive will pay for itself very quickly, offering savings of up to £150 a year on your energy bills, and it’s compatible with 99% of the UK’s gas boilers. One of the most advanced home energy gadgets is the Nest learning thermostat, which is now owned by Google. The £249 device isn’t just a good looking thermostat; it’s a computer that learns your everyday activities and sets the heating to suit - and it knows when you’re out, lowering the heating accordingly. Once again the

big selling point here is reduced energy bills, and Nest has proved so successful at doing that in America that some US energy companies are giving them away free to their customers to help keep their bills down (and the customers loyal). A thermostat is hardly the most exciting sounding gadget, but Nest has big ideas: Google has teamed up with the likes of Mercedes-Benz and fitness gadget maker Jawbone, remote control firm Logitech and garage door firm Chamberlain to make Nest compatible with their products. A Mercedes car knows what time you’ll be home and can alert the thermostat accordingly; a Jawbone fitness tracker can tell when you’re waking up and can turn the heating up automatically; all-in-one remotes can get all your entertainment gadgets ready for a movie while dropping the temperature to make the thriller even more chilling. It won’t be long before Google adds voice control to the mix, and it’s clear that it sees Nest as the centre of a much wider home automation system. It’s hot stuff already! By Gary Marshall

Short Story

The Gunpowder Plot by Jackie Brewster

“Is there any chance you could give me a hand?” Carrie looked up from the library photocopier at the young man. It was the same one she’d been discretely watching across the bookshelves as he struggled to finish his essay. “I need to enlarge this picture and I’m not sure how”, he said. Carrie reasoned that she had only been watching him because she thought he might be the poor bloke that Marissa had got her claws into. She could see why; even though he was wearing his jumper inside out, he was rather cute. As well as being a student, Carrie worked evenings at the college library, and had come to notice most things. For example, she’d seen him cast anxious glances at the library clock, and suspected that tonight was the night that Marissa had finally agreed to go on a date with him. there was a big Bonfire Party in town, and she’d overheard Marissa boasting that this guy was so besotted with her he would be buying her entry ticket and her drinks all night. Poor man, what was he letting himself in for? Carrie stared at the book he was holding out to her. “I’m sorry?” she said. “I need to enlarge this”, he said 28

apologetically, “I’m in a bit of a hurry”. If he was hoping to catch the six o’clock bus into town, Carrie thought, he was cutting it rather fine. Slowly, she took the book. “Sure, what do you want enlarging?” “It’s the Palace of Westminster”. he pointed to the page, “I need it blowing up”. She looked at the picture and laughed. “that’s the houses of Parliament isn’t it?” “yes”, he adjusted his glasses, “it’s for an essay”. “you’re asking me to help you blow up the houses of Parliament?” She giggled, “tonight of all nights?” he stared at her blankly. “It’s bonfire night”, she explained. “Course!”, he grinned, “I’m going to a bonfire party”. “Got a hot date lined up?” Carrie said, and laughed at her own joke. “Something like that”. he blushed. “We don’t want you to be late”. Carrie smiled, “I bet she’ll have you hung drawn and quartered”. Knowing Marissa, thought Carrie, that’s the least she would do. he laughed nervously. Carrie placed the book carefully on the photocopier, “Does this make me a coconspirator?” she asked, and

pressed a few buttons. “About what?” he said. “About your gunpowder plot?” “oh yeah”. he glanced at the clock again and winced. Carrie bit her lip and pressed the start button. Nothing happened. “that’s odd”. She gave the machine a kick. It stayed silent. Carrie methodically went through the whole process again, twice; patiently checking everything, but still nothing. “I’m sorry, the machine’s playing up”, she sighed, “our technician will be back in an hour, can you come back then?” the library clock chimed six. the young man slumped against the wall. the bus was leaving without him. “Cheer up”, Carrie said guiltily, “I’m sure she won’t mind waiting”. It was common knowledge that Marissa waited for nobody. She took a deep breath, “I’m finishing work now. Can I buy you a drink in the student bar to help pass the time?” “Why not?” he managed a smile, “you’ve been really helpful”. “I’m Carrie”. She comically held out her hand, “What’s your name?” “It’s Guy”, he smiled and shook it warmly. “Guy Fawkes”. “you’re joking?” “Got you”. he grinned, “It’s tom”. “I’ll get my stuff and meet you there in five”. Carrie waved him off, and, as he walked away, bent down and switched the photocopier back on.
