We are blessed, in this area, with excellent roads, parks and countryside in which to ride a bike so it’s no surprise that the cycling revolution has taken off in and around Southampton. There’s something Melanie Tinson for every standard from learning to ride (courses provided by Cyclewise see p38), country park trails for kids (see what’s on p2) to triathlons for the more competitive souls (Trytri in Winchester see back cover). Following a disastrous, near-divorce cycling experience on the Isle of Wight, my husband hurriedly replaced the cheap seat for a deluxe model that now allows me to enjoy (well, survive) our cycles in the New Forest. I’ve even signed up for the annual PPP (Pedal, Pound, Paddle) in Winchester (winchesterppp. co.uk) in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support, a very worthy cause to suffer for. So, if you fancy swapping your four wheels for two, the list of Cycle shops on page 36 will direct you to your local specialist shop. Why not combine fun with fitness and cycle to work on Red Nose Day (see p43) and raise a few pounds 13th March and laughs for Comic Relief. And remember, please buy local and support the businesses that have to fight the national retailers and internet sites; if we don’t use them, we’ll lose them.

Health
Quit While You’re Ahead By Alison Runham www.alison.runham.co.uk
March 14th is National No Smoking Day and there is ever increasing evidence about the damage smoking can do to you: • The health problems: cancers (lung, larynx, lips, tongue, throat, oesophagus, stomach, kidneys, bladder, pancreas, testicles, cervix), emphysema, angina, heart attack, heart disease, stroke, bronchitis, pneumonia, asthma, pleurisy, liver damage, high blood pressure, circulation problems and gangrene leading to amputation, hair loss, hearing loss, glue ear, eye irritation, cataracts, gum disease, blindness, loss of sense of smell, osteoporosis, impotence, deformed or low mobility sperm, reduced fertility, miscarriage, low birthweight babies and premature aging. • You risk causing all these diseases in those you love. Smoking around them increases their risk of lung cancer by 24% and heart disease by 25%. Children’s under-developed immune systems and faster breathing make them particularly vulnerable. Smoke toxins linger in a smoker’s breath and for two hours in the air, so smoking in another room doesn’t eliminate risk - and we now know that carcinogens and irritants adhere to hair, clothing, furniture, objects and floors in a room, putting babies at the chewing, crawling stage at risk.
• You’ll save money and smell more pleasant.
Helping You Quit Withdrawal symptoms such as agitation, irritability, insomnia, headache, depression, difficulty concentrating, dizziness and constipation usually peak 24 hours after your last cigarette, before easing off over 2-4 weeks. Ultimately, like any drug addict, smokers smoke not to feel better but to feel normal. That’s why you may need support.
Counselling/Addiction Groups Local advisers from the NHS Stop Smoking Service can offer support, and you’re four times more likely to quit with their help. Visit http://www.nhs.uk/smokefree/ help-and-advice/local-supportservices-helplines or ask your GP.
Nicotine Replacement Therapy NRT can help you defeat nicotine addiction gradually, without those other toxic cigarette ingredients: benzene and acetone (solvents); cadmium (used in batteries); cyanide and arsenic (well-known poisons); formaldehyde (dead body preserver); tar; ammonia; shellac and carbon monoxide (which sticks to your blood, robbing you of oxygen and straining your heart). NRT can greatly increase your chances of quitting smoking successfully and there are a range
of products available on prescription or to buy. Some can be combined for your ideal dose and coverage. • Patches: release a steady dose of nicotine into your bloodstream. They’re very discreet and come in a range of doses and types. • Gum: gives a burst of nicotine when you are craving a cigarette. • Lozenges and soluble sublingual tablets (microtabs which dissolve under the tongue). • Inhalators: Similar to a cigarette, they’re ideal if you find the habit of holding a cigarette hard to break. • Nasal sprays: usually best suited to heavy smokers, they rapidly deliver a strong dose of nicotine. Research suggests they may be the most effective type of NRT.
Other Medication These prescription-only medications are only available to over-18s and aren’t suitable for everyone. Ensure your doctor is aware of your medical history, current mental or physical problems and medications. They don’t contain nicotine but help you overcome addiction. • Zyban (Bupropion Hydrochloride): Taken 1-2 weeks before you plan to quit and continued for around 2 months, it helps to relieve withdrawal symptoms. • Champix (Varenicline): also started 1-2 weeks before your planned quit date and continued for around 10 weeks. It reduces nicotine cravings and also decreases the ‘hit’ when you do have a cigarette.
So now you know your options, why not try to make March 14th YOUR No Smoking Day? Good luck!

GARDENING
Facing North by Pippa Greenwood www.pippagreenwood.com The problem I am asked about most frequently is that of what to do with a north-facing wall. Everyone wants to know what you can plant up it but more importantly, what you can do to increase the chances of your chosen plant not just surviving but also thriving. Getting the right plant for the spot is essential and I’ve listed some great north-facing wall climbers below. But first consider whether you need year round cover (and so something evergreen) or would accept a deciduous climber that will lose its leaves but keep a framework of stems, or if you could live with an herbaceous climber that will die back each year and return again in the spring. If the wall is very shaded it may be worth reducing the
www.pippagreenwood.com
shade if you can. Nearby wallshrubs could be pruned back or overhanging trees crown lifted (the lower branches removed) or crown thinned (the crown’s density reduced).
of potash as this will increase flowering potential. Follow the instructions on the pack, and generally try to apply it to the root area in late summer and then again in spring.
Walls may be a dark grey or brick colour but you can make the spot considerably more plant friendly if you change the colour of the wall before planting. A pale-coloured masonry paint on the wall will cause light to be reflected back to the plant and make it more likely to thrive.
Make sure that the climber goes in at a good distance from the wall up which it is to grow. A minimum of about 45cm (18in) should mean that it can develop a good strong root system and this will help to keep it growing well.
Consider growing more than one climber to increase the season of interest and so the amount of time that the wall looks good. Flowering may be reduced if the site is gloomy and so to maximise your climber’s flower power make sure that you apply sulphate
Self-clinging climbers such as the climbing hydrangea or a variegated ivy can look great and help to provide at least part of the interest you’re after for your north-facing wall, but even these often need a bit of a helping hand to get them started – train the stems on to the wall and protect from wind until they get properly attached.
TOP PLANTS FOR NORTH-FACING WALLS & FENCES Akebia Quinata - Pretty pale green foliage with vanilla perfumed purple-brown flowers in late spring. Berberidopsis Coralline - Prefers acidic soil, clusters of deep red flowers in early autumn. Clematis - Many smaller flowered varieties such as white flowered, rampant C. montana do well. Codonopsis Convolvulacea - Pretty bell or saucer shaped violet coloured flowers in summer. Humulus Lupulus (the hop) - The golden leafed ‘Aurea’ will perform quite well as long as the shade is not too intense or the site windy.
Hydrangea Anomela Petiolaris - A deciduous climber with broad creamy white flowerheads. Lathyrus Latifolius - the everlasting pea. Small clusters of pinky purple flowers throughout the summer and in to early autumn Lonicera x Americana - Classic honeysuckle flowers in yellow flushed red and with a gorgeous perfume during the summer. Lonicera x Tellamanniana - Bright yellowy orange honeysuckle flowers in late spring and summer. Vitis Coignetiae - Renowned for its fabulous autumn colour.

The Grass Is Greener ...Or Is It? You don’t need to be a weatherman (or woman) to know that the UK isn’t blessed with the most desirable of climates. Our weather is unreliable and generally takes the middle ground in terms of heat, cold, sun, cloud, rain and snow. There’s not enough of any one to be worthy of note, except on the odd few days when it veers to an extreme - so unusual it makes headline news. Still, every cloud has a silver lining…literally! This temperate climate means we can have gorgeous gardens during the summer without having the worry of hosepipe bans and scorching heatwaves. And for most of us, the cornerstone of outdoor living is the lawn – the canvas for horticultural artistry. Even if you aren’t green fingered, it is likely that more of your garden will be given over to lawn than any other single feature. Unfortunately, if your grass looks more grazing meadow than bowling green, a beautiful space will elude you until it’s sorted. But where do you start, and what do you need?
Analysis Is your soil chalk, clay or sand? Do you have a problem with any particular types of weeds 24
and pests. Are there any bare patches and what’s causing them (e.g. pets)? Is the lawn type suitable for purpose – the finest blades aren’t going to stand up to footie with the kids.
Equipment If your lawnmower hasn’t had any maintenance in years, the blades are blunt, and the blade height is difficult to adjust, you need to choose between a service or a new model. But lawns also need scarification (removing moss and other debris) and aeration (small holes in the ground to allow air, water and nutrients to circulate) and both of these require specific tools.
Products Plenty of water of course, but no garden reaches its full potential without products to feed the growth and kill the weeds. These are relatively inexpensive and can be purchased at most DIY stores and garden centres. However, if you don’t know what you are doing, you can waste money or worse do damage; many a garden has been scorched by an over enthusiastic application of fertilizer.
Time Oh yes, that elusive element,
lack of which is the enemy of any outdoor plans. If you can’t be consistent with your maintenance, it’s hardly worth starting. It’s all very well being enthusiastic in March and April, but if you’ve lost interest by July, both time and money will be wasted.
The professionals Feeling enthused? Or overwhelmed and resigned to golden yellow thatch instead of a glorious green sward? It is possible with research, time, dedication and money to achieve great results taking the DIY route. But in reality it’s a job many just don’t enjoy doing and consequently the professional lawn treatment market has rocketed over the last few years. Most people do still like to mow their own lawns (although many even outsource that these days), but buying and storing expensive equipment and carrying out lawn work, is a job better left to those that do it all the time . With treatments typically starting at around £14 a visit (4 visits a year), you could spend more on the fuel taking you to and from the garden centre!

TRAVEL
10 Highlights of a Holiday in Croatia Relax on the beach
A week or two in the unspoilt Dalmatian Coast will give you the chance to appreciate all that Croatia has to offer. Whether it’s walking the historical streets of Trogir, tasting the nightlife in Split, sunbathing by the beach, canyoneering down the Cetina River there’s something everyone.
1
Historical town of Trogir; this World Heritage Unesco site has hardly changed in hundreds of years. Wind your way round the narrow, cobbled streets, wine and dine under the palms of the “riva” in view of the super yachts berthed nearby.
2
Hire a speedboat for the day. Pack you snorkel, your shades and a picnic, or head to a nearby island for lunch.
3
Swim in the Krk National Park. Accessible only by river boat the Krk Falls are a must. Feel the spray on your face from the falls and follow the natural trail for stunning views.
4
Visit Split by boat from Trogir. Walk amongst the Diocletian’s Palace, set within the centre of Split itself. Climb the Bell Tower for breathtaking views of the city and surrounding landscape of mountains, islands and rooftops.
5 Okrug Gornji beach, Ciovo.
Krk Falls Unspoilt Dalmatian Coast
From sunrise to sunset hire a sunbed for the day and be served drinks while you soak up the sun.

6 From dolphin watching to
spearfishing, bike tours and island hops to Hvar; excursions all start from Trogir so take your pick.

A day trip to Mostar, Bosnia & Herzegovina. Where two cultures meet, mosques on one side of the dramatic gorge and churches on the other. Bullet riddled buildings still stand bearing the scars of the battle of its Old Bridge during the 1990s conflict.
9
Ride the Cetina River in many ways; by raft, canoe, kayak or just in a wetsuit and drift downstream. For the more daring abseil the last 100ft drop!
10 Relax by the pool at
Rozac, a luxury 3 bedroom apartment with two balconies, air conditioning and private pool. Located in the heart of Ciovo island, walking distance to Trogir and five minutes stroll to the beach. What’s the currency? Although Croatia joined the EU in 2014, local currency is still kuna and at the current exchange rate your spending money goes far. Eating out is not expensive, local wine and beer is cheap. View from apartm

When’s the best time to go? Peak season is July and August so it’s bustling and weather is beautifully hot. June and September is quieter and a little cooler. Some excursions might not operate in May and past 15 September. Do they drive on the left or right? On the right but with the network of water buses and boats you don’t need to hire a car; a great saving.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Justin Friel feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving
people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Southampton area and Justin is finding that his approach is
a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done
work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Justin a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Cake and Bake
Hot Cross Buns Home-made hot cross buns are easy to make so why not give them a go? Serve warm from the oven, split and spread with orange flavoured butter for the ultimate Easter treat!
Ingredients: • 500g strong white plain flour, plus extra for dusting • tsp salt • 2 tsp ground mixed spice • 55g caster sugar • 1 x 7g sachet easy blend or fast action dried yeast • 300ml milk • 55g butter, cubed • 1 large egg • 150g dried mixed fruit
for the crosses and glaze • 3 tbsp plain flour • 1-2 tbsp warmed golden syrup or honey
Serves 12
1. Sift the flour into a large bowl and stir in the salt, mixed spice, sugar and dried yeast. Make a well in the middle. 2. Bring the milk almost to the boil in a small pan then stir in the butter until melted. Leave the liquid to cool until it’s just hand hot. Pour the liquid into the well with the beaten egg and mix with a round- bladed knife to make a soft and slightly sticky dough. 3. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic, adding a little more flour if the dough is too sticky. 4. Place the dough in a clean, lightly greased bowl and cover with oiled cling film. Leave the bowl in a warm place for about 1 hour or until the dough has doubled in size. 5. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead in the dried fruit. Divide and shape the dough into 12 even-sized buns and place on a large greased baking sheet, leaving about 2cm space around each bun. 6. Cover loosely with oiled cling film and leave in a warm place until the buns have risen by at least half again and are almost touching each other. This will take about 45 minutes to an hour. Preheat the oven to 220C, 200C fan, Gas Mark 7. 7. For the crosses, place the flour in a bowl and gradually add enough cold water (about 2 tbsp) to make a thick paste. Spoon into a piping bag fitted with a small plain nozzle and pipe crosses on each of the buns. Bake the buns in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes until risen and golden brown. Leave on the baking sheet for 5 minutes then transfer to a cooking rack. Brush with the warmed golden syrup or honey while the buns are still warm.

Hobbies
Get Ready for the Cycling Revolution By Kate McLelland Graham Flavell from Dorset fondly remembers the bike he owned as teenager:
“I sold it when I learned to drive a car, but I really regretted that later.” As a child growing up in the Midlands he not only used it to cycle to school, but would spend hours roaming the neighbourhood with friends, all of whom owned bikes:
“I remember that in the ‘50s and ‘60s everyone who worked at the factories commuted by bicycle, so for my generation cycling was a way of life.”
Graham says: “We meet twice a week and I enjoy the camaraderie of cycling with other people. It was hard when I started, but I’ve been amazed how my fitness has improved over the last six months.”
So where do you start if you have decided to take up cycling for the first time? It really depends on what kind of cycling appeals to you. Will you be using your bike for transport, for leisure or for competition?
The popularity of cycling has been enhanced by trailblazing athletes such as Sir Bradley Wiggins, who has achieved elite status as a professional cyclist on both track and road, but this new trend is also driven by health concerns: Graham admits that health is “a big topic” amongst his fellow cyclists.
Budget is another important factor. Not everyone can afford to buy models such as the new, lightweight carbon framed bicycles, which can cost up to £1,000. An old bike can fit the bill provided you’re not competing in the Tour de France or planning any off-road trekking, but if you’re buying second hand it’s advisable to get your bike serviced to ensure that it is roadworthy.
After university Graham moved to Dorset to take up a new job and decided to return to cycling as a way of exploring the countryside. For many years he continued to enjoy low-key, leisurely bike journeys: discovering more about the local area and enjoying the occasional family holiday on two wheels.
Sport England claims that over 2.1 million people currently cycle on a weekly basis in the UK, and in the autumn of last year the government published a draft version of its Cycling Delivery Plan for consultation, giving details of a 10-year strategy that includes the ambition to double the amount of cycling activity on Britain’s roads by the year 2025.
In recent months, however, Graham’s commitment to cycling has undergone something of a revolution. He is now one of the many thousands of people in the UK for whom cycling has become a serious hobby, and he currently cycles up to 140 miles each week with a group of like-minded friends.
In the Netherlands cycling has enjoyed popularity for over 100 years and even now nearly 30% of all Dutch journeys are made by bike. The recent government consultation is one of a number of promising signs indicating that the UK is trying to catch up with its Dutch neighbours.
If you’re not sure what type of bike you need - and there are a bewildering variety of models out there - a specialist cycling shop should be able to help. Alternatively Guardian journalist Helen Pidd’s book The Complete Guide to Everyday Cycling (published by Penguin) offers a practical, illustrated guide to buying and riding a bike for the first time. Once you have bought your bicycle, you’ll need to acquire some basic skills. How to signal, how to ride in traffic, how to do an emergency stop and even how to change a tyre: these are all
35 essential things to learn before you before you set out on a busy road. On the British Cycling website (www.britishcycling.org. uk) you can search for a local Bikeability course, designed to teach you the skills you need to ride confidently on today’s roads. Britain’s network of cycle lanes and paths is steadily growing, and cycling is now a much safer activity than it used to be, although urban cyclists often complain of cycle lanes being too narrow, or the layout stopping abruptly. Rural roads offer their own challenges, but after a lifetime’s cycling along country lanes Graham Flavell says that the drivers he has met are
generally respectful. However, he recalls one man who was less than happy to meet a group of cyclists:
“We must have annoyed him, because he waved a tyre lever at us, threatening to ‘get us’ if he saw us again. The next day a policeman knocked at his front door, to warn him about his behaviour. When the driver asked how the officer knew about his ‘road rage’ incident, he replied: ‘Last time you saw me I wasn’t wearing a policeman’s helmet, I was on my bike’.” Cycling is a great leveller and Graham’s anecdote shows that these days you can expect to meet anyone - from your local
bobby to a millionaire pop star - getting around on two wheels. These new converts to the cycling revolution understand that cycling not only benefits their physical and mental health but also helps the environment by cutting carbon emissions. Graham agrees there are no better reasons to get on your bike!

These celebs prove how easy it is to make your face funny for money, and as ever the charity is expecting a fantastic turn out from the generous people of the South. Whether the public paint their face, wear a Red Nose or grow a sponsored comb-over, they’ll be joining millions of people up and down the country as they raise life-changing cash. Comic Relief spends the money raised through Red Nose Day to help poor and vulnerable people living incredibly tough lives both here in the South and the rest of the UK, and across Africa. Since the last Red Nose Day, money raised has funded more than 230 projects right here in the region, like The Bivol Trust, a group that works to build up the confidence and capabilities of young adults and children with learning and physical disabilities. Once members of the public have made their face funny for money, they can take a selfie. They can text funny to 70011 to donate £1. Comic Relief will reply to the text with a link that people can use to send over their photo and they could appear in the Red Nose Day campaign! It really couldn’t be easier for the nation to join in the fundraising fun at work, school or home. Every person who gets involved will help to change lives forever. Texts will cost £1 plus the standard network charge and £1 will go to Comic Relief. Participants must be over 16 and ask the bill payer’s permission. Mother’s Day Around The World By Alison Runham www.alison.runham.co.uk Mothers deserve attention all year round, so as 15th March approaches, we might wonder why we only celebrate mothers on one special day - and if other countries follow suit.
The UK Our Mother’s Day originates from ‘Mothering Sunday’ (the fourth Sunday in Lent) when people returned to their baptismal ‘mother church’. As this was often close to their parents’ home, over time it became a holiday for visiting family. Flowers were gathered for mothers on the way home, and mums received Simnel cakes (giving the day the alternative title of ‘Refreshment Sunday’, as breaking the Lent fast was permitted). However, Mother’s Day had gradually withered until Constance Smith, inspired by Anna Jarvis’ U.S. campaign, revived it in 1920. By 1938 Mothering Sunday was celebrated throughout the Empire, and is now widely known as Mother’s Day.
Around the World Most countries have a Mother’s Day, but origins and traditions vary. Unless stated, the countries below follow U.S. tradition, as most countries do, celebrating on the second Sunday in May. Germany Germany, concerned about its low birth rate, introduced Mother’s Day to celebrate women with large families. In 1938 the government began awarding the Mother’s Cross (Mutterkreuz) in bronze (for 4 children), silver, or gold (for mothers with eight children or more). Today Germans celebrate modern Muttertag with a family day out, often ending with dinner at a restaurant. FRANCE In France, American soldiers introduced their version of Mother’s Day during the First World War, sending so much Mother’s Day mail that a special postcard was created for them. Originally focussed on mothers of large families, today the Fête des Mères on the last Sunday in May celebrates all mothers, who traditionally receive a cake shaped like a bouquet of flowers. Sweden also celebrates on this day. Their Red Cross sells plastic flowers in aid of deprived mothers.
Mother’s Day 15th March ITALY In Italy, mums receive a heartshaped cake while families in Finland go out early to gather flowers for their mums. EGYPT Egypt’s Mother’s Day on 21st March was introduced in 1956, after a journalist heard about a son who abandoned his mother, showing no gratitude for her years of care. It’s now spread throughout the Arab world. Celebrations include songs especially devoted to mothers. NEPAL In Nepal, children return to the family home on Mata Tritha Puja or “Aama ko Mukh Herne Din” (meaning “to see Mother’s face”), on the last day of Baishak dark fortnight (April/May). They make breakfast for their mothers and give them gifts, favourite foods and new clothes. Those who have lost their mother visit Mata Tirtha, a sacred site with a pool in which people can ‘look upon their mother’s face’, or visit a local holy site, offering sweets, fruits and money to commemorate their mother. Legends name Mata Tirtha as the place where a cowherd saw his dead mother’s face in the pool while praying - or as the place where Lord Krishna found his missing mother, Devaki (who declared it a sacred place for children to reunite with departed mothers).
45 USA The USA didn’t keep English Mother’s Day, but Anna Jarvis campaigned for a Mother’s Day in honour of her mother, who had introduced “Mothers’ Friendship Day” after the Civil War. At a church service on the second anniversary of her mother’s death (the second Sunday of May), Anna handed out her mother’s favourite flowers: white carnations. Today a coloured carnation signifies a mother still living while a white carnation honours mothers who have passed away. It became a national holiday in 1914. AUSTRALIA In Australia, Mother’s Day grew from Janet Heyden’s campaign to give gifts to lonely inmates of Newington State Home for
Women. Schoolchildren in Japan draw pictures of their mothers for a nationwide competition and winning pictures travel the country in a mobile exhibition. MEXICO In Mexico, Mother’s Day on 10th May - once a pawn in the battle between government and church on modernisation, women’s roles and U.S. materialist influence – now celebrates both mothers and the Virgin Mary. Children often arrive at their mother’s house the night before. Traditionally the day starts with mass before mothers are presented with a breakfast of tamales and atole, a hot drink made from hominy, but many mothers are now treated to breakfast, flowers and gifts at home, accompanied by a song. PARAGUAY In Paraguay, Mother’s Day is
celebrated on 15th May on Dia de la Patria (Independence Day), to honour Juana María de Lara’s role in winning Paraguay’s independence. Similarly, Bolivia’s Dia de la Madre Boliviana on 27th May commemorates the women killed fighting for independence in the Battle of Coronilla. ETHIOPIA In Ethiopia, their ‘Antrosht’ celebration lasts three days, beginning on a flexible date after the rains have ceased (usually October/November). Traditionally, mothers cook a special meal but daughters provide the dairy products, vegetables and spices while sons must bring the meat. After the meal, there are traditional songs and dances. So why not celebrate Mexican-style this year and sing your Mum a song?
