Spring Into Action

Melanie Tinson & Tania Houston

As I write this month’s letter, the sun is shining and there’s definitely a feeling that spring is on its way. It’s still freezing out, but it’s such a feeling of hope when the sun gets a bit brighter. Interestingly many of our advertisers tell us that business picks up at this time of year. Not just the gardeners – you’d expect that – but it seems that the sunlight streaming into our homes shows up wear and tear and more than a few days of dust too (and I’m not just talking about my face in front of the mirror, hah!). ‘Book early’ is the lesson if you want to get home and garden improvements underway. It wasn’t much of a winter to speak of, but still dark and damp enough to discourage going out in the evenings. So now is the time to review the magazine to see our events features and pages to top up the diary for the next couple of months. In my last note I mentioned trying to tackle my procrastination problem. I’m not an awful procrastinator, but like many of you I do avoid the tricky and boring tasks. But once you start, you do get momentum and it makes it easier to move onto the next job. I keep reminding myself of that, knowing that if I say to myself ‘there’s no rush’ I’ll get out of the habit and I’ll be back at the beginning, feeling like I’m pushing water uphill. No excuses Tania – just do it!

And Another Thing... Where Tom Stops Commuting by Tom Hughes My Dearly Beloved’s face fell as the true horror of my announcement sunk in. “So what you’re saying is that from now on, you’ll be working from home?” “Yes. Nigel is cutting costs. It’s actually great news because they are paying for a broadband upgrade, and I get a desk.” “You’ve got a desk.” “And no more commuting hurrah! I thought I could move into Evan’s old room.” “Well I’m not getting rid of that divan, it’s never been slept in.” Monday morning 7am. I leapt into my work trousers and after slurping my coffee was on the drive, keys in hand before I realised. Of course, I don’t have to do this anymore! So, sitting at my new desk an hour early, I took the first conference call of the morning: a very important discussion about our national marketing strategy. “Hi Tom, Nigel in Basingstoke here and Marty in Seattle, what’s your take on this? I was just about to launch into my best corporate blather when – MMMMNNNMMNNNNN! “Sorry Tom, there seems to be some interference on the line?” Apologising, I opened Evan’s 6

bedroom door (sorry, branch office door) and was promptly bashed on the big toe by the Hoover. “Darling - I’m in a meeting!” I hissed. The Henry fell silent. “Well this house won’t clean itself - darling. Anyway that’s me done, I’m going out.” So while Marty droned on about performance indicators, I looked down from the bedroom (branch) window as Sarah, Bags for Life in hand, set off for Tesco and the dreaded Big Shop. At last some peace! Or so I thought. I was in the middle of composing my umpteenth electronic missive of the day when I heard a scratching at the door. It was Ollie, demanding to know what I was doing at home this time of the morning. To stop the whining I relented and in two bounds he was over the desk and onto the window sill, where he settled down for a mid morning snooze. So, with my best friend asleep next to me, I beavered away at my spreadsheets. The new phone buzzed once more and, as Ollie raised an inquisitive eyebrow, I took my second conference call of the day. I was just about to set out in no uncertain terms why Basingstoke couldn’t escape restructuring when next door’s cat

decided to run across the porch roof. “So, Tom what you are saying is…” “Grrrrrrr…” “Oh, sorry Tom, don’t you like Marty’s idea?” “Woof! Bark! Woof!” “Tom, is that a dog I can hear?” I heaved Ollie out onto the landing, nearly strangling myself with my headset in the process. I coughed. “Sorry guys. New ring tone.” After ending the call I spotted Sarah returning from the Big Shop. “I thought you were ‘at work’?” “I can’t just sit up there watching you struggling. Here, let me.” “Look I’m perfectly capable of putting away the shopping - no Tom, the bleach doesn’t live in there! Just go back upstairs and leave me to it.” As Sarah unpacked everything my stomach reminded me that lunch time was almost upon us. So, nestled on the sofa next to Sarah with my bag of Quavers and my ham bloomer, something told me that turning the TV channel over to check on England’s progress at Trent Bridge was not a good idea. I decided instead to join in with

the catch up.

“No, he’s dead.” “Hasn’t anyone noticed?” “He’s encased in concrete.” “I see...” Finally it was time to return to work. But I shouldn’t have had that second Eccles cake because around three forty five both Olly and I began to flag. The phone rang, the computer bleeped, my mobile buzzed. Eventually the racket drew Sarah to see what was happening inside Tom Hughes Towers. “Hello, Tom’s phone? I’m sorry, he can’t come to the phone right now he’s…in a meeting with Oliver. Of course you can’t hear snoring, that’s…his new ring tone.” Follow Tom @groomsdaybook groomsdaybook.com

GARDENING

The Grass Can Be Greener by Pippa Greenwood www.pippagreenwood.com Blue Clematis

It’s the time of year when things are starting to look lush and green, and beds and borders are beginning to come into their own. But does your lawn spoil it all by looking like a rather moth-eaten patchwork quilt? Or maybe you don’t have a lawn but think it would be great to possess one of those beautiful green surfaces in the centre of your garden?

Whether you have decided your old lawn is well past its best or you want to create one from scratch, it is the perfect time to get started, and turf should still be available from specialist suppliers or garden centres.

Preparing the site If you want a new lawn, it is essential to get the site properly prepared. It takes time and effort, but every moment you spend is well worthwhile. Start by removing all weeds, large stones, debris and any old grass or lawn, then dig or fork over thoroughly to remove all taproots of weeds. If the area is really weed infested or covered with old lawn, then most people opt to kill this off with a weedkiller based on glyphosate. Then, once all the plant matter has died off, you can strip it away or dig it in. On sandy soils, incorporate some organic matter to improve moisture retention, while on very heavy soils it is often worth digging in grit and organic matter to improve drainage. Next, firm the whole area by treading it over evenly - walking over the site

12

with fairly flat-soled boots is all you need to do. Once done, rake thoroughly with a garden rake and remove any stones or other debris which comes to the surface. Gently tread down the area again if raking makes it uneven.

Buying turf Always choose a reputable supplier and make sure that the turf you buy is suitable for the use you have in mind – some, especially those including lots of dwarf ryegrass, are much tougher than others, while some contain a seed mixture especially put together to make it suitable for use in shade. Others produce a ‘bowling green’ effect, which may look superb but will take an awful lot more maintenance and be a good deal less hardwearing. Spending that little bit extra usually pays - cheaper turf often contains weeds and sometimes pests or diseases, or simply does not contain a good grass mixture in the first place. Always buy the turf or arrange to have it delivered just when you need it, as storage never does it any good. If you do need to store it however, you can usually

do this for a couple of days. The turves can remain rolled up for up to 24 hours, but for any longer than this unroll as soon as they are delivered and lay them out flat, grass side upwards, preferably on paving or plastic sheeting. Make sure that you keep them regularly watered and lay them as soon as possible.

Lay the next row of turves, again ensuring that the long edges of each abut onto the long edges of the previous row. To avoid damaging the first row lay a plank over it which you can kneel on to lay the second row. Continue like this over the whole area until your new lawn is in position.

Laying the turf

Of course no lawn is ever exactly the right size to fit the turf length, so if you need a small section of turf to complete a row, add this in the middle of a row rather than at the end, as this will make it less likely to be dislodged or to dry out. If you want a curved edge to your lawn, lay the turves so that they overlap the new lawn edge and then cut them to shape using a half moon edger or a sharp border spade.

It is essential that you lay your turves closely together and do not allow the edges to overlap. Make sure that the joins on each row are staggered (like bricks in a wall), as this will give an even finish. Starting at one side, lay the first row of turf using the adjacent path or lawn edging to form a straight line which you can work to. Roll out each turf carefully so that the edge of one abuts onto its neighbour.

When finished, gently tamp the area over using the back of a

rake and if any turves sink in then carefully lift them and place some extra soil underneath until they are level. Finally, brush in a mixture of horticultural sand and finely sieved soil over the surface, taking care to ensure that any tiny gaps between the turves are filled in.

Care and maintenance As soon as the turf is in position, gently water it using a sprinkler, ensuring that this first watering allows the water to penetrate right down to the root level. If it doesn’t rain frequently then you will need to water your lawn on a regular basis, particularly for the first couple of months whilst the roots are getting established. In the meantime try to avoid walking on it too much and in no time at all you will have a gorgeous lawn to be proud of.

RECIPE

Pork Jambalaya serves 4 ready in 55 minutes Cooked in just one pan and on the table in less than an hour this is a great midweek family supper. Serve with garlic bread or a mixed green salad, if liked.

Ingredients: • • • • • • • • • • • •

1 tbsp groundnut oil 100g chorizo sausage, sliced 350g pork loin steaks, cut into chunks 1 onion, peeled and chopped 3 celery stalks, trimmed and chopped 1 garlic clove, peeled and crushed 2 tsp smoked paprika, plus extra for sprinkling 2 tsp Cajun seasoning 225g easy-cook long grain rice 700ml vegetable stock 100g fine green beans, chopped 1 large yellow pepper, deseeded and diced

You can replace the pork in this recipe with diced chicken breast fillet or boneless thigh fillets. Alternatively use large raw king prawns and add them to the pan in step 4 and cook until pink.

TIP

1. Heat 1 tsp of the oil in a large deep frying pan and fry the chorizo over a high heat until golden and the fat starts to run. Remove from the pan with a slotted spoon and drain on kitchen paper. 2. Add the diced pork to the pan and fry for 2-3 minutes, stirring all the time until browned. Remove and set aside with the chorizo. Add the rest of the oil to the pan and fry the onion, celery and garlic for 5 minutes until beginning to soften. 3. Stir in the spices and rice and cook, stirring, over a medium heat for 2 minutes then pour in the stock and bring to the boil. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Return the pork to the pan and cover and simmer gently for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally. 4. Stir in the chorizo, green beans and yellow pepper into the pan and cook, uncovered, for a further 6-7 minutes until the rice and vegetables are tender, adding a little more stock if necessary. Serve sprinkled with a little more smoked paprika and freshly ground black pepper.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Justin Friel feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving

people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Meon Valley area and Justin is finding that his approach is

a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done

work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Justin a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Help I Haven’t Got A Will! One of the most important documents you will sign is your will and making a will should not be overlooked or avoided. Why use a solicitor? Using an unregulated and uninsured will writer may result in a badly drafted will, with hidden charges, poor tax planning, estates being subject to the rigid rules of intestacy and vulnerable beneficiaries at risk of financial abuse, loss of benefits or without adequate provision from their parents’ estate. Solicitors are regulated and act in accordance with their professional rules. You need to know what to expect when using the services of a solicitor which

is why we will provide you with accurate information about what we will do for you and how much you will pay for our services. Our fees must be agreed with you before any work is carried out on your behalf. At Driver Belcher Solicitors we have a specialist team who are highly qualified in the preparation of wills and all other aspects of your personal legal affairs. Why should i make a Will? • you decide who benefits from your money and possessions after your death • you avoid the Rules of Intestacy • you choose who you want to administer your estate i.e. your Executors • you can avoid family arguments

and expense by making everything clear • you can maximise any reliefs from Inheritance Tax that are available to you • peace of mind What should i do if i already have a Will? You ought to review your will every three to five years. Simple changes like a change of address do not mean you have to rewrite your will. Significant events for example getting married, starting a family or inheriting money ought to prompt you to review or rewrite your will.

BEAUTY

Spring Is In The Air By Kate Duggan

Spring is a great time to clear out the makeup bag (or overflowing cupboard in my case) and treat yourself to a few new goodies.

How pretty is this new palette from Paul & Joe? Teaming an eye shadow duo with a powder blush, the palette is available in two shades: Papillons de Printemps and Floral Nectar (pictured). Retailing at £28 each, they’re not cheap, but the colours are easy to apply and you’ll be the envy of the other bathroom mirror hoggers on a night out. If you really want to splash out, Paul & Joe have also released some new lipsticks, in three vibrant spring shades. Many people find that they need to buy a new foundation for spring/summer, as their skin loses its winter hibernation paleness. (Or that’s my excuse anyway.) The new Aqua Glow Serum Foundation by Stila combines foundation with a treatment serum. It gives great, natural looking coverage, while hydrating and softening skin. 94% of testers

28

reported dramatically improved skin tone. If you can’t wait to take your makeup off at the end of the day because your face feels dry and uncomfortable, you need to try this foundation. It contains hyaluronic acid and other ingredients that help to keep skin hydrated for up to 12 hours after applying it. Available in 10 shades, the Aqua Glow Serum Foundation retails at £34.50. If your hair is looking a little ‘meh’, but there’s still weeks to go until your next trip to the salon, try a KC Color Mask. Available in 14 shades,

Pro-Vitamin B5 and keratin derivative, to help repair the cuticle. Prices start from under £5. including platinum, golden copper, plum and coffee, these masks revitalise coloured hair. A small amount helps to maintain the hair colour and add brightness, while a larger amount can deepen the colour intensity. Just apply to freshly washed hair, comb through, leave for up to ten minutes and wash out. They’re particularly useful for toning down brassy tones in blonde hair, and giving depth to darker shades. The masks also contain

Spring demands a lighter, fresher fragrance, and Yardley London has just released the perfect one. English Daisy is reminiscent of a wildflower meadow – floral, but not too sweet. It’s unashamedly girly, with notes including hyacinth and white rose, warmed with sandalwood and musk. And, at just £19.99 for 50ml, it’s a bit of a bargain. Team it with the English Daisy body lotion, £6.50 and embrace the warmer weather.

I’m finding that the sun’s reappearance means it’s a lot easier to drag the kids out for a walk (although it’ll be a while before we’re out of our wellies I reckon). Along with wet wipes and plasters, the one thing I always take with me is Pure & Light Organic’s Essential Family on-the-Go Cream. It’s packed with plant-derived vitamins, and helps to treat everything from insect bites and bruises to eczema. The 18 natural active ingredients include soothing calendula, hydrating shea butter and nourishing avocado. Priced at £15, it’s available from www.pureandlightorganic. eu and www.lovelula. co.uk.

COR MEIBION PONTYPRIDD!

“For as long as you both shall live....” But get your ducks in a row first.

Getting married? So you’ve chosen your venue, booked a caterer, decided on a colour scheme, contemplated killing the mother-in-law or mother or both....... But have you considered a Pre-Nup? A Pre-Nuptial Agreement is a written contract created by two individuals before they are married. It typically lists all of the property each person owns, as well as any debts, and specifies the rights of each individual in the event of the marriage breaking down. In short, a PreNup allows you to plan for the future in the unfortunate event that wedded bliss is short lived. That said, modern agreements will record that “the purpose is to promote and encourage the marriage “the purpose is to promote and encourage the marriage rather than to facilitate its breakdown”. For example, a Pre-Nup can incorporate: •

The ring fencing of assets acquired before the marriage, property and business interests being the more obvious examples, or unmatched contributions towards the purchase of the family home;

• • •

Pre-Nuptial Agreements

Consideration of foreign property; Agreements as to the ongoing financing of the family home and any debts; Provisions detailing financial provision on the death of either spouse; Careful planning as to the division of capital (property and pensions) and income (wages) on divorce.

Please bear in mind that, at the time of drafting, the PreNup is likely to be fair. It would be for your lawyer however to advise as to the assessment of fairness in the future. For example, a PreNup cannot prejudice the reasonable requirements of any children of the family. PreNups must be signed at least twenty eight days before your wedding, so do consider, in between the cake testing, invitation writing and dress fitting, an appointment with a solicitor. Kate Stovold is a Solicitor at Trethowans LLP. She specialises in Family Law and would be very happy to assist with any queries, whether in relation to PreNuptial Agreements or other financial issues. TRAVEL

All the way to Memphis, Nashville and New Orleans New Orleans to Nashville; this classic US road trip should be on the bucket list of all 20th century music fans. It takes around 10 days at a leisurely stroll to wind your way along the Mississippi, before finally heading eastwards and on to Nashville. New Orleans is a great starting point, famous for its French Quarter and the birthplace of Dixie Jazz. You could easily spend your time just taking in all that the music scene has to offer or try a tour. There are many motel options along the route that allow you to free-wheel your way to Nashville, should you wish. If you are looking for stopovers with a little more character, then pre-booking is the way to go. One such place you may like to consider is the wonderfully bizarre Houmas House on Louisiana’s River Road, boasting a room where Bette Davis once stayed. Your next stop should be Lafayette, the main city of the Cajun population, descendants of the exiled French Acadians who moved to Louisiana in the 1700s. As you head north you will arrive at Natchez, home to some of the finest antebellum era plantation homes and mansions, built by the wealthy plantation owners of the 18th century. These beautiful homes are set in large gardens and showcase the wealth of the early years of the United States. 34

Memphis is looming large on the map by now. Before you get there you should definitely spend some time in Vicksburg. Driving into Vicksburg, you immediately feel the Southern tradition that flows through the city’s veins. The city is rich in history, but especially Civil War history. You will find tours of graceful antebellum homes that stood proudly through the siege of Vicksburg, to reenactments at landmarks and cemeteries that honour the men from both the North and the South that fell during the war. Just south of Memphis in the town of Clarksdale you will find another great little Inn, Clark House, which is well worth considering for a stopover before finally arriving in Memphis. The town that gave birth to rock ‘n’ roll still throws a daily party on famous Beale Street, where bands play Buddy Holly and Jerry Lee Lewis to excitable tourists. It’s a city whose dramatic past feels eerily present. At the Lorraine Motel, now a wonderful civil rights museum, you can stand on the very spot where Martin Luther King Jr was assassinated. At Graceland, you can follow in the footsteps of Elvis, take a mansion tour, and enjoy live presentations showcasing artefacts from the Graceland archives. Last stop Nashville, Home of the Grand Ole Opry and the fabulous Country Music Hall of Fame -

Nashville doesn’t call itself Music City for nothing. Musicians still come to the city to be discovered. At RCA Studio B you can sit at the Steinway at which Elvis composed Are You Lonesome Tonight and see where Dolly Parton once drove into a wall. Planning a road trip such as New Orleans to Nashville is never easy and it pays to speak with the experts. INTERVIEW

All Saints Fans of the nineties band All Saints, are celebrating their return – with a new single and album. Melanie and Natalie, who make up half of the group, caught up with The Breeze’s Lucy Ambache and talked reunions, families and reality TV. You are the band I wish I was a member of. Both: Oh thank you! You started out as an unmanufactured band. Did that just happen? Mel: Yes it did. We’d been going for years under different set ups and stuff like that. By the time the public were aware of us and we had ‘You Know Where It’s At’ out, we already felt like we’d been doing this for years. Are you enjoying being back together? Nat: We’re having so much fun. We spend more time laughing than anything. For me this reunion came a bit out of the blue. Who was the one who put in all the calls? Mel: Shaz always begged us to come back <laughs>. She actually got a call from Backstreet Boys asking whether we would support them on their UK tour a couple of years back and we all said yes. She was 38

inspired, started writing for us, and we all thought what she was doing was amazing. We got in the studio and had the best time ever. It’s a bit daunting that we’ve only got ourselves to blame! Do you feel that? Do you feel nervous with such a gap between your last work? Nat: It’s not even about that. It’s about enjoying what we have there’s no point worrying. Enjoy the moment, have fun and whatever happens, happens! Either way we’re happy and proud with what we’ve done. Mel: At our nice ripe old age, we know what our weaknesses and strengths are, we know who we are as people and we know and appreciate the love we have for each other as well. Let’s talk about the new song ‘One Strike’. For me, it’s All Saints but All Saints 2016. Is that what you intended because it works! Mel: I think it was just done naturally. There was no plan and no agenda – not even what style of music we should do for the album. We had one meeting at the beginning saying it just had to be good – and that was pretty much all we spoke about. Shaz picked the producers she wanted to work with and the feedback has been great. Is the single a good example of what the rest of the album sounds like? Mel: Definitely. I think if you’re

a fan of us, you will love this album as much as we do. Are you getting on the road with the album? Because you guys are internationally successful. Do you want to do the whole global thing again? Mel: If someone goes “hey guys do you want to perform over here” and we can be bothered, because we’re really lazy <laughs>, then we’ll go! So what have you been doing in the meantime? Mel: I was being a judge in New Zealand <on the New Zealand X-Factor> What kind of judge were you? Mel: Obviously a horrible one! I was very honest because I can’t help it. I was a really bad mentor but a really good judge. Nat, what have you been up to? Nat: Being really involved in my son’s life, growing up in school, and enjoying it and appreciating every second. I love my life and I’m very blessed with the family I have.

TECHNOLOGY

Gadgets for the Indoor Gardener You don’t need to get dirty to grow great things Indoor Allotment

Spring has spring and it’s gardening season. But not everybody has a garden or access to decent growing space - and even if you do have the space, the recent stormy weather has been enough to keep all but the most determined gardener indoors. Don’t despair, though: there are plenty of gadgets that enable you to grow great things indoors or when you have limited space for green things. There are even tools to design gardens that don’t exist. If you’re also a keen cook, you’ll like the Indoor Allotment (£24.99, currently on pre-order at Firebox. com): it’s a miniature herb garden complete with picket fence and storage shed. It includes basil, coriander and oregano along with everything you need to get your herbs growing - and it’s small enough to fit in the corner of a windowsill. If you fancy something a little bit more ambitious, IKEA’s Socker miniature greenhouse is just £12 with an assembled size of 45cm wide, 22cm deep and 35cm high, which is more than enough for all kinds of plants. You can also keep the roof vents partly open to improve air circulation for plants that don’t like it too hot. While you’re in IKEA, it’s worth checking out their self-watering 40

plant pots too. The Sötcitron and PS Fejö pots (from £6 to £16) are designed for those of us who don’t always remember to water our plants, and do a superb job for very little money. Fancy something a little more hightech? The Click and Grow (¤59.95 from clickandgrow. com) describes itself as a “smart garden” and uses a NASA-inspired combination of hydroponics and electronics to ensure that your plants get the right combination of water, oxygen and nutrients without you doing anything. It includes a LED lamp for maximum germination, and because it’s LED the running costs are microscopic. The creators suggest growing petunias, tomatoes, chillies, basil or thyme but it should be able to handle anything that isn’t too large. If you’ve got green fingered children, the Chuppon self-watering animal planter (£9.99) should delight them: it’s a ceramic animal with a herb basket on its back and a straw that sips from any glass or mug. There are four animals and four

herbs to choose from, although of course you can put your own herbs in instead. Even the smartphone has made its presence felt in the world of gardening, and there are lots of apps and devices for indoor and outdoor gardening. One of the cleverest devices is the Parrot Flower Power, a wireless device that sits in your plant pot and monitors the plant’s health, sending alerts to your phone. It’s available for Apple and Android phones, measures sunlight, temperature, fertiliser and moisture, and it currently costs £42. That’s probably a bit steep if you’re growing cress, but if you’ve got something exotic or temperamental it could be a very wise investment indeed. There’s another type of digital gardening you can do, and that’s to create a virtual one in your computer - something you can do just for fun, or to plan what you’ll do to a real garden space. There are many garden planning apps to choose from, including My Garden (free from www. gardena.com/uk) and Marshalls Garden Visualiser (free from www.marshalls. co.uk). Happy gardening!

Just The Ticket For The Gateway Club!

Photograph: Brian Loveday, Chairman, Bishops Waltham Gateway Club, (left) receives a cheque for £610 from Lion President Roger Morfill.

Lion President Roger Morfill recently attended Bishop’s Waltham Gateway Club to learn more about this very special group, that meets on the first and third Monday of each month at St. Peter's church hall. The Gateway Club is a social club for people over 16 with learning disabilities and does a super job providing a full programme of fun activities for its members, including discos, games, group outings and Christmas dinners. The Lions were delighted to help with one of these events, by funding a pantomime trip for some 46 club members to see Dick Whittington at Ferneham Hall in Fareham. Roger was delighted to present a cheque for £610, covering the cost of the tickets, to Jan Chamberlain and Brian Loveday, who do such a great job running this club on a totally voluntary basis.

Gotta Get A Witness Iain Betson conducts enquires into a useful new website Come-on, ‘fess up. I know it’s happened to you because it’s happened to me. How many times have you seen, or been the victim of, down-right dangerous driving by another and wished that a policemen had also seen what you had experienced and nabbed the perpetrator? Well now your wish can come true. It takes a little forethought and effort on your part, but if it helps to get numpty drivers and, frankly, those who seem to have little regard for human life when driving off the road and given their just desserts, then I think it’s time and money well spent. The use of the dash-board mounted camera is comparatively recent in the UK, although it is rising. This is in contrast to Russia, where, judging from the hours of Youtube dash-cam uploads, its use seems universal.

Your own insurance protection Fitting one to your car is quite simple and reasonably inexpensive to do, certainly when you consider that the material it captures could save you a fortune in insurance. But what do you do with that footage if you do record bad, dangerous or illegal driving? You could contact the police directly and show them the evidence, but your camera may not have recorded enough material for charges to be brought. Alternatively, you could consider submitting it to the PoliceWitness.com website. The aim of the site is to highlight dangerous driving and that those responsible are now having their actions recorded. They also act as a conduit to the police and insurance companies when claims or charges are brought. You may not have been the only one recording an incident, so the site can act as a collection point for other footage of the same incident, thereby increasing the chances of a prosecution. An additional incentive for getting a dash-cam is that, to help insurance companies prove liability, they may also pay for your footage, meaning it could pay for itself.

MOTORING

Range Rover On Test It’s the dreaded question that anyone even remotely connected to cars fears more than any other: what’s your favourite car? But finally I might have the answer: the Range Rover. Not the Sport or Evoque but the good old fashioned, full fat Rangie. A looming family holiday looming involving a 1,500-mile trip gave the perfect excuse to borrow the car, and after two 13-hour shifts behind the wheel I can honestly say there’s nothing else I’d rather have been in. Here’s why. First, it’s super comfortable. The front seats in our Range Rover were heated and cooled and had more adjustments than a home hi-fi amplifier from the 1980s. The huge armchair like seats with cushioned headrests never dulled a muscle and left us with no aches and pains. With a five-year-old on board, the £7,300 entertainment pack (yes, you read that right) was a blessing. Two 10.2-inch rear screens and wireless headphones meant Finding Nemo could work his fishy magic at keeping the Are We Nearly There Yets at bay until at least Dover. The multimedia system might be showing its age a little but it works well. It takes seconds to hook your phone up for music streaming, the satnav might look 46

By James Baggott

a little dated but it got us to France, Switzerland and home without fail and it’s simple to set a DVD running for the rear occupants while listening to Dad FM in the front. Then there’s the size – I know Range Rovers are massive, but when it comes to getting a ski trip’s worth of luggage inside, it coped admirably. Despite using up the entire boot space there was ample room inside – enough to curl up for a snooze in the back and enjoy the equally cosseting rear seats when my wife drove. For its size it’s no slouch. Our test car had the delightful 4.4-litre SDV8. Despite only returning 26mpg, with a top speed of 135mph and a 0-60mph time of 6.8 seconds, it’s brisk enough for French Autoroutes. It piles on speed in a smooth and linear fashion, quietly and without fuss, whilst adding to the feeling of luxury travel. However, what really sets the Range Rover apart are the little touches. Things like the softclose doors, the illuminated logos projected onto the floor by the wing mirrors at night, and the front seat armrests that adjust to the perfect height. I love the fridge in the centre console, the cameras all around the car that make it a doddle to park, and the split tailgate that automatically

opens and closes at the touch of a button. But above all it’s the fact that despite all this luxury and Rolls Royce-rivaling opulence, it’s still so utterly capable off road. As we arrived in Villars, Switzerland, the snow was falling heavily and cars were being abandoned up the mountain as snow chains failed to do their jobs. But not the Range Rover. A flick of the all terrain response button to its Snow & Ice setting and away we went. So there you have it. The one car I would buy if I had to live it with it for the rest of my life. Just as long as I could afford the £109,710 for the pleasure…
