DISTRIBUTION Discover Meon Valley is published every other month and distributed by Royal Mail to two alternating areas. This edition goes to homes in SO32 1 (Bishop’s Waltham) and PO17 5 (Wickham). A few weeks later it will be arriving at homes in SO32 2 (Swanmore, Shedfield & Curdridge). This is around 9200 homes over the two month distribution.

Lightbulb Moment Some years ago when spotlights and track lighting were all the rage, I was a bit of a home fashion victim, and installed them in every room I could. On hindsight I overdid it a bit as my husband recently declared in exasperation, “do you know we have 88 bulbs in this house? 88!” . Each year as the nights start drawing in again and so the lights are on for longer, bulbs going “pop” becomes a daily occurrence. With the old fashioned ones as rare as hen’s teeth, I tried those long life ones that come to life after you’ve tripped over the wellies in the unlit garage. OK plan C, I’ve taken advice from my local electrician and switched from 50w spotlights to 5w LED bulbs. This is all in a bid to reduce our embarrassingly large electricity bill. I began with restricted use of the national-grid-draining tumble dryer. I’m now using the oven feature on my microwave rather than using the main oven simply to warm up plates or cooking a meal just for two. Alas, training teenagers to turn off the lights/TV/computer/hair straighteners before leaving the room is a skill I have yet to master. My husband suggested abandoning the dishwasher but I assured him I’d read somewhere that it is false economy and washing by hand is more wasteful (and if I didn’t read it, I’ll write it myself). There are many ways to keep the bills in control from having a programmable central heating controller to changing light bulbs, and your local plumber, electrician or builder can help you. Until next time...

HOBBIES

Have You Got The Baking Bug? by Kate McLelland Cupcakes make you smile!

In recent years baking has become a bit of a national obsession. With events such as the Sugarcraft, Cake Decorating & Baking Show visiting large conference venues in London, Birmingham and Manchester, new cake-craft shops opening in our high streets and countless community bakeoffs taking place all over the country, it would appear that the UK has been well and truly bitten by the baking bug. Home baking has always featured heavily when it comes to local fundraising events: if you visit any school fete or village fair you are almost certain to find a stall heaving with homemade cakes. But nowadays you won’t just see any old cakes displayed for sale: you’ll find creations made and decorated with real flair and passion. Much of the renewed interest in what can be achieved with butter, sugar, eggs and flour can be ascribed to the BBC’s now legendary TV

6

show, The Great British Bake Off, which features a team of amateur bakers (observed by expert judges Paul Hollywood and Mary Berry) taking part in progressively harder baking challenges over a period of ten weeks. The show promises to attract an audience of over eight million viewers when Series 5 is broadcast later this year. The first episode of GBBO traditionally kicks off with “Cakes” and it’s fitting that this aspect of baking should open the competition, as cake making and decorating has become one of the most popular hobbies in Britain today. Perhaps it is the combination of cookery and artistic skills that has captured the public’s imagination. The current trend is to create specialist cakes that are not only delicious to eat, but beautiful to look at, and bakers are now using a range of specialist tools and equipment to help them achieve stunning effects for their cake creations. A whole industry has sprung up around cake making and decorating and it’s easy to find a vast selection of professional cutters, paper cases, novelty cake tins, sprinkles, icing figures, ribbons, boxes and cake boards, either by shopping at specialist high street outlets or by searching for cake equipment suppliers

online. Cupcakes are especially popular: decorated with butter cream icing, sprinkled with edible glitter and often topped with exotic decorations, they can easily be turned into individual, quirky masterpieces. These little cakes can even be displayed on a multilayered framework (a “cupcake tower”) in place of a traditional wedding cake. The name “cupcake” first appeared in an American cookery book published in 1796. They were so named because they were baked in individual pottery cups, ramekins or moulds, the size of a small teacup. Their popularity was revived in the 2000s thanks to the US TV series “Sex and the City”, when lead characters Carrie and Miranda scoffed cupcakes from New York’s famous Magnolia Bakery as they discussed their love lives. The craze is still going strong today, with UK artisan bakeries getting in on the act, using ever more exotic ingredients and themes to tempt us. These days you can buy special tin moulds for cupcakes and it’s possible to experiment with a huge range of recipes, from the ordinary (Raspberry Swirl Cupcakes) to the bizarre (Pumpkin Spice Cupcakes with Cream Cheese Frosting). Try them out on family and friends, or if you’re feeling ambitious

you can even enter the National Cupcake Championships. You can view the entry guidelines at www. nationalcupcakeweek.co.uk but hurry, as the deadline for entries is 15th August. Although many people enjoy pottering alone in the kitchen, trying out new recipes and finding original ways to decorate their cakes, The Great British Bake Off seems to have inspired a real enthusiasm for communal baking, whether that’s about learning together or indulging in friendly competition. It’s understandable to want to share your baking triumphs – and disasters – with someone else, and participating in a group can encourage you to try out different techniques and develop new skills. You can look up cake decorating courses in your local area by going to www.cakedecoratingcourses. co.uk or alternatively visit your

local library to find out if they hold a list. If you fancy getting away from it all in order to really focus on your art, then there are a number of cake decorating short breaks and holidays available, with one day courses costing from around £100 (not including accommodation). If you want a real holiday experience you could sign up for a cake-making course in France, with accommodation and meals included for £649 per person. See www.frenchcakebreaks.com for more details. For those who simply don’t have the money to spend on courses (having already laid out a small fortune on gourmet sprinkles), there are a number of tutorials on YouTube (www.youtube.com) that will teach you everything you need to know, from creating a basic cake mixture to advanced piping techniques.

If you don’t enjoy learning alone, you can always invite a friend around to experiment with you, or get together with neighbours to create your own version of the Great British Bake Off. One thing’s for certain: there’ll be no lack of volunteers to help when it comes to tasting the results!

GARDENING

Grow Your Own Take-Away By Pippa Greenwood We all know that homecooked food is better for us than a stream of takeaways, but then we all deserve a little self-indulgence from time to time. So why not save yourself the guilt (and some cash) and grow your own Chinese takeaway right here in your own garden? No I haven’t turned cookery writer, but you can easily grow some of those tasty and crunchy vegetables that make the backbone of many a Chinese stir-fry... and the great thing is that oriental vegetables do well from late summer sowings, so it’s off to the garden centre (not the takeaway) you go! Bean sprouts are so easy to grow you could almost do it with your eyes shut. The common types are sprouted mung-beans, and you can either buy packets of seed or a small packet of the beans themselves from your local health food store. They’ll come with easy cultivation instructions and before you know it you’ll have 18

From the garden to the wok

the beginnings of a stir-fry. Mizuna has got to be one of the most attractive leafy vegetables you can grow. Its green leaves appear soon after sowing the seed in a pot or in open ground, and they add a great spicy flavour to your stir-fry and also add a zing to salads and sandwiches. And where would your Chinese meal be without that delicious Oriental veg, pak-choi. It’s another easy vegetable to grow late in the summer: just sow the seeds in a well-forked soil, water, and wait. Thin out as per the instructions of the seed packet (you can eat the thinnings too), then just pinch off the roots and pop the plants into the wok. Pak-choi also grows well in a container of multi-purpose compost. Garlic is another essential ingredient. It’s not really the right time of year to plant garlic, but for an unexpected little extra take a few spare cloves and pot them in trays of compost. Keep the compost slightly moist and in a week or two the cloves will start to sprout. What you’re after here aren’t the sprouts though, but the bright green foliage which adds a definitely garlicy flavour to stir-fries and a touch of colour as well. Radishes add heat as well as crunch, and there are some

lovely oriental varieties such as Mantanhong, which is a British-bred Chinese variety with a superbly crunchy bright redto-pink inner flesh and spherical white roots – great for colour and texture and with a sweet almost nutty flavour. Sow in open ground or pots from now until early September for cropping in a few weeks’ time. Spring onions are another classic stir-fry component. You won’t get a fully mature crop for harvesting this year unless you’re extremely lucky; but what you will get is a super-young onion that will add both colour and intense flavour to the contents of your wok. And finally, mushrooms will add a meaty texture to your homegrown vegetable stir-fry. Kits for growing both oyster and field mushrooms are available in many garden centres or by mail order. It’s not always easy to get right, I know, but the challenge is definitely worth it when you have exotic mushrooms growing in your cellar, garden frame, greenhouse, or shed. Visit Pippa’s website www. pippagreenwood.com for her “Winter thru Spring” vegetable collection, plants for September, regular advice emails from Pippa, and a range of gardening products including Nemasys caterpillar, slug, ant and other biological controls, Enviromesh & Envirofleece

Hambrooks Win Silver Gilt Medal at Hampton Court Flower Show

Hampshire based Hambrooks has won a Silver Gilt medal for its ‘Halo’ show garden at the Hampton Court Palace Flower Show. Sponsored by The Royal Horticulture Society (RHS)and the Association of Professional Landscapers (APL) for the category ‘Your Budget Your Garden’, it is part of a scheme to bring to the general public’s attention what is achievable within particular budgets. Hambrooks Garden Designer Stuart Towner created a Mediterranean themed garden based on the imagery of a classic Greek island with a modern interpretation of the Greek Orthodox Church dome, symbolised by a ring of blue steel. Stuart Towner said, ”It felt wonderful to be awarded a Silver Gilt for my first show garden but the icing on the cake for me is the realisation that I have created something that visitors to the show

love because they feel it is real – something they could have for themselves.” Managing Director Norman Hambrook says it is great to have these opportunities to showcase garden design for small gardens as it will help to boost the landscaping industry. This is because it demonstrates to the general public that well designed gardens are not beyond their reach. Hambrooks, Curdridge Hampshire SO32 2DA 01489 779998 www.hambrooks.co.uk

How does Silhouette Soft work? Applying Silhouette Soft®takes around 30 minutes and is administered by our trained doctor, Dr A NaryanDenning. After a small local anaesthetic, the doctor inserts the threadunder the skin to a depth of about three to five millimetres. The angle and tension of the thread (with its bidirectional cones) is the skill used to determine success.

Why is Silhouette Soft Safe? The development of SILHOUETTE SOFT® is based on six years of experience in suture suspension with cones used in reconstructive surgery and cosmetic surgery in the United States (Silhouette Lift®). It has also been used since 2010 on the Asian market, where it met with great success. • The natural substance of SILHOUETTE SOFT®polylactic acid (or PLA) - has been used for many years in various pharmaceutical and medical applications such as suture thread, orthopaedic pins, screws and nails for bone fractures, etc. It is also used in new biodegradable stent trials.

Before & immediately after treatment (carried out by Dr Denning)

And Another Thing... by Tom Hughes I am getting married. This year. To a woman. Things are being set in motion, heads of steam are building, snowballs are rolling, rabbits are running. You get the picture. Sarah and I (or is it me and Sarah? I never know) met when we were old enough to know better, and fell in love anyway. But what started as a “bit of a do” has morphed into something much, much bigger. Where to start? Shoes, let’s start with the shoes. What is it about shoes and women? I have a pair of black shiny loafers for work. In fact I have three pairs. I also have a pair of brown slip-ons that I step into to go for the milk and the paper. The back of them are squashed down because sometimes I can’t be bothered putting them on properly if I’m say, just putting the bins out. The trainers I wear to go the gym are so tatty I think even the tramp in the precinct would turn his nose up at them. 26

What I’m saying is that the look I strive for daily is shabby chic. Ok, just shabby then. But as I recently discovered, shoes for women are a completely different kettle of battered cod altogether. If weddings send women funny, then wedding shoes send them to planet Giggly Girly. Because I wanted Sarah’s day to be special, I needed to make sure that everything was perfect from the ground up. So we toddle off into Manchester. Ok, so how difficult can it be? You can’t bloomin’ move for shoe shops. We wouldn’t be long surely? Sarah had a spring in her step as we marched determinedly past Clarks, Footlocker and all the other shoe wear emporiums that I have never seen the inside of. Then we stopped outside a posh looking outlet called Selfridges. After dodging the scary looking perfume sprayers prowling the make-up department, we arrived at the shoe concession, where we were suddenly surrounded by gorgeousness. Casually, I turned over one of the stilettoes. Oh, I thought to myself, that must be a European

size….495. I put my glasses on – 495 quid!? The room started to spin. I looked up to see Sarah deep in conversation with a handsome young man who was holding up a pair of sparkly shoes so delicate and strappy that they were almost invisible to the naked eye. Usually, if I see Sarah giggling and smiling with a good looking guy I get jealous. But when he stood up and did a little twirl of delight, I began to relax. I sat down next to a misty eyed Sarah who held up a shiny pink box and said, “Darling, these are the ones.” Do you remember the scene at the end of Pulp Fiction when Tim Roth opens the briefcase and a golden light shines out? A similar thing happened in Selfridges. The lid fell away and there they were, laying together like two perfect sparkly poodles. “Hello Tom, we are the Choo twins. My name is Jimmy and this is my brother - he’s called Jimmy Choo!” Sarah tried them on. She walked up and down, they did look amazing on her. “Can I have them, please?” “If it’s what you want darling, you

can have them.”

“Over here, next to my thumb.”

Sarah hugged me tight. She broke away, I saw tears in her eyes. The handsome guy who sold them to her looked like he was about to sob with joy. They were wrapped and taken to the till where I handed over my card. And then, as the pretty girl keyed in the price, I started crying too.

“Oh that? And how –“

Ok, that was that. The pain was just about bearable. I had survived. Or had I? Imagine a boxer against the ropes, his gum shield is out and the towel is on the canvas. Do the punches stop landing? Not a bit of it. “Tom darling, this is the bag that goes with the shoes, isn’t it lovely?” “Where? Where is this bag?” “Here, here in my hand.” “Where in your hand?”

“Three hundred quid.” “A bargain, I’ll take two.” “Don’t be funny.” My squashed down slip ons didn’t come with a matching flat cap. There isn’t a matching pair of gloves to go with my corduroy trousers. But maybe it’s just because I don’t do co-ordination. Not really what your bride wants to hear when she is planning a wedding, is it? To be honest, I always thought

that me and fashion were strangers. That is until we left the shoe concession and went to choose my outfit. The fabulous gentleman in the menswear department could just see me in a slim fitting Hugo Boss. He picked out my suit, stood me in front of a full length mirror, turned to Sarah and went ‘ooh’. Sarah joined in, “Ooh Tom, that looks absolutely lovely on you, don’t you think?” “Do you know something Sarah? I think I could get used to this twirling business….”

Tom Hughes is a writer from the North of England. Befuddled and bemused by the modern world, Tom, when he has nothing better to do (which is most of the time) likes to commit his musings to paper. Follow Tom and Sarah’s wedding at groomsdaybook.com

Catalyst Therapy Clinic According to the Office of National Statistics, 1 in 4 of us will experience at least one diagnosable mental health problem in any one year. From depression and stress to anxiety and addiction, it can be difficult to know what to do when circumstances such as these arise. Catalyst Therapy is a new, cutting-edge hypno-psychotherapy clinic based in Romsey and is accepting new clients without the need for a GP referral. Catalyst Therapy utilises a wide variety of complimentary therapies, based around Hypnosis and Psychotherapy in order to combat many mental health and habitual issues. This approach is called Hypno-psychotherapy. A typical fifty minute consultation consists of a friendly discussion about the issues that you are facing. The therapist would then discuss the ongoing level of support needed to resolve your difficulties. The client is always in control during the procedure and can decide to stop at any point. Often one or two sessions of hypno-psychotherapy is all that is required for issues such as stopping smoking, reducing nerves or even providing a confidence boost for a critical job interview. All clients are now welcome either at our dedicated premises in Romsey (with free parking) or by telephoning to arrange a home visit.

Five Easy Ways to Save Money on Your Heating Oil With over 22,000 homes off the gas grid in Central South, many families in our community use oil to heat their homes. If you’re on oil and looking to make a saving on your next order, check out our useful tips for smart, simple ways to cut down your costs! 1. Watch the weather Oil prices typically decline during warmer months because temperatures are high and demand is low. By topping-up your tank this summer, you can take advantage of these great prices and stay warm in winter for less. 2. Compare prices By shopping around, or using an instant, impartial comparison service such as BoilerJuice, you’ll always get the best quote for your oil. 3. Order early Set a reminder, mark it on your calendar or simply plan ahead to avoid costly emergency deliveries and take advantage of cheaper delivery options. 4. Group buy Buying as a group is the best way to get a discount on your oil, but did you know that you can do it online? Some websites will automatically group your delivery with others in your area, to help you qualify for group discounts every day of the week. 5. Spread the cost While payment schemes often mean an expensive contract with a specific supplier, signing up for a monthly payment plan with an impartial site gives you the ability to spread your oil costs, while guaranteeing you the best quote from a range of suppliers across the UK.
