Have you heard? I’m sort of giving my age away here, but I remember the first “hole in the wall” opening in town. I also remember the battle between VHS and BetaMax, BSB and Sky and getting broadband (unbelievably just 10 years ago). The world has changed yet many “old” products and technologies have survived including books, newspapers and magazines. But what used to be the authoritative business guide, the Yellow Pages, has shrunk as homeowners want a choice of people they know are local and as businesses choose more cost effective ways of advertising including magazines like Discover. Interestingly, we are seeing a battle between online “recommendation” services such as Checkatrade, Rated People and a new one I heard advertising on the radio, Unique Tradesmen. These new services are helpful but I believe only one will survive, if at all, as the many tradesfolk I speak to are increasingly finding fault with them. Fortunately, our advertisers tell us that local advertising in good old fashioned magazines like Discover works well. You don’t need to go to the internet to find a plumber, electrician or gardener. They are all wrapped up in Discover, ready to be called to serve you. Talking of radio, you may have heard our advertising campaign on The Breeze. Our “Read it. Keep it. Use it.” slogan is designed to remind listeners to look out for their copy of Discover coming through their door. As always, if you contact one of our advertisers, please tell him or her they were “discovered” in Discover.

SHORT STORY
Parma Violets by Jackie Brewster “Can you be trusted to mind the café while I nip next door?” Aunt Carol asked solemnly as though she was leaving Becky in charge of the country. It was a big responsibility, and this was only Becky’s third day. The lunchtime rush was over, and there had been no customers for nearly an hour. While Becky was grateful to Carol for giving her a holiday job, she found that buttering cobs was not as easy as they made it look on television. She suspected Carol wasn’t convinced she had what it took to be a success in catering. “Whatever you do,” Carol warned her, ”don’t let that rat chap in.” Which seemed both a strange and reasonable request. Left alone, Becky practised folding napkins until she heard the café door open. An elderly gentleman, smartly dressed, sat down at the table by the window. Becky took a deep breath, picked up her order pad and walked briskly over to him. “What can I get you, sir?” she asked. He was wearing a jacket which appeared to be wriggling. A small furry nose popped up between the lapels. Becky nearly dropped her pencil. “Oh, don’t worry about him,” the man said. “He’s fine.” “Pets aren’t allowed in the café,” Becky said nervously. She was almost certain this was true because she’d read a sign in the window. “Roland’s not a pet,” the man replied, browsing the menu. 6
“He’s a guide dog, and they’re perfectly welcome everywhere.” “But you’re not blind,” Becky said, a little embarrassed. “Of course everyone immediately thinks of guide dogs for the blind.” He closed the menu as though he found nothing appetising within it. “Roland’s an allergy guide dog. Have you heard of that?” Becky confessed she had not. “I am allergic to parma violets,” the man continued confidentially. “Roland has to sniff my food to confirm it’s safe to eat.” “Allergic to parma violets?” Becky repeated blankly. “Dangerously.” The man nodded sagely and tapped the menu. “Can you recommend anything that doesn’t include parma violets?” Becky was confused. Parma violets were little purple sweets she had no idea they were also a cooking ingredient. “I don’t think there’s any in the tea,” Becky said hopefully. The man frowned, “Can you guarantee it?” She shook her head. “In that case, it’s a good job I have Roland here.” He pulled Roland out of his jacket and sat him in his lap. He was a funny looking dog, with short legs, a pointy nose and a long body. “What type of dog is he?” Becky asked. “He’s an allergy dog, we’ve been
through this.” The man waved his hand dismissively. “Be quick with the tea dear, I’ve a plane to catch.” Becky hurried back behind the counter. Something didn’t feel right about the man and his allergy dog. She hoped he would drink up and go before her aunt returned. After all, the nearest airport was a two hour drive. She was not in luck. Carol bustled into the café carrying a box of crisps. “Any customers?” she asked. “Not really,” Becky lied as she overflowed the teacup. “So who’s that for?” Carol asked dubiously. “The gentleman over there.” Carol turned round and almost exploded. “Not you again,” she screamed. “Get that rat out of here!” The man scooped up Roland protectively. “He’s not a rat,” he said indignantly. “He’s a ferret, and they’re very clever animals.” “He sniffs parma violets,” Becky added to explain the situation. And with that, her fate in the world of catering was sealed.

HISTORY
What happened in... March 1994? Average cost of a house was about £70,000 Petrol cost about 49p per litre
©Eurofighter Geoffrey Lee
During joint operations between the US Army and Air Force on the 24th March, two planes collided over a military airfield. A twoseater Fighting Falcon struck a Hercules transporter at an altitude of about 300 feet. The damaged Hercules managed to land safely and the fighter pilots ejected from their doomed aircraft, which crashed onto the runway causing massive damage, including the destruction of another transport plane. Twenty four men on the ground were killed and over eighty were injured. 4th: Nearly eight years before the Twin Towers were destroyed, four Muslim terrorists were convicted of bombing the World Trade Center. A truck bomb was detonated beneath the North Tower, with the intention of causing it to fall into the South Tower. This failed to happen but six people were killed and over 1,000 injured.
Three of the bestselling singles this year were: The Sign - Ace Of Base Bump N’ Grind - R. Kelly Without You/Never Forget You - Mariah Carey 12
9th: The IRA fired five mortar bombs from a car in the car park of the Excelsior Hotel at Heathrow. Two of them landed on the northern runway, which was closed for ninety minutes. None of the bombs exploded. 12th: A photograph claimed by Marmaduke Wetherell to be proof of the existence of the Loch Ness Monster was proved to be a hoax. 23rd: Whilst flying a Russian Airbus over Siberia, pilot Yoroslav Kudrinsky thought it would be
a good idea to let his twelveyear-old daughter have a drive, according to taped conversations on the flight deck. He then handed over the controls to his sixteen-year-old son, who accidentally turned off the automatic pilot and the plane crashed, killing all 75 people on board. 27th: The Eurofighter, named Typhoon, made its first flight in Manching, Germany. Development of this aircraft began in 1983 and it was designed to be in service until the mid-twenty-first century. Initially a collaboration between the UK, Germany, France, Spain and Italy production was delayed by political issues and eventually France withdrew from the project. It was not used in combat until the intervention in the Libyan conflict in 2011. Controversial TV tycoon Silvio Berlusconi’s right-wing coalition won the Italian general election and he began the first of four terms as Prime Minister. 28th: A church in Alabama was hit by a tornado, killing 22 people. BBC Radio Five Live made its first broadcast. Patrick D Cousins is the author of Rainbows, Dreams and Angels, available from Amazon. This is a double novella with both stories set in east London, mainly during the 50s and 60s.

Titchfield Remembers A group of Titchfield residents are researching local WWI servicemen who have a connection to the Parish of Titchfield and their families and including anything about the Parish during the war years 1914-1918. They are looking for help from the descendants of service men, those on the war memorial and others who were born or brought up in the Parish. “Of course the original Titchfield Parish spread across from Warsash to Wickham and down to Crofton” says local historian Amanda Laws, “and we want anyone with family stories or photographs of the area during the war or family images of the servicemen to get in touch and help us gather as much information as we can”. The group have plans to exhibit their findings, contribute to the Titchfield Carnival 2014 and make their research available on the Internet. If you would like to contribute to the project or get involved please contact titchfieldremembers@gmail. com or send to 8A High St, Titchfield PO144AF 14

Put Your Shirt On Waltham In 2014 Hong Kong cricketer Aizaz Khan has taken time out from the ICC World Cup qualifiers in New Zealand to donate an international playing shirt to Bishop’s Waltham Cricket Club. 20 year old Khan, who played for the club in 2013, handed it over to first team captain Dan Wheeler who is playing and coaching in Canterbury over the winter. The shirt, signed by the entire Hong Kong Squad, will take pride of place in the Albany Road pavilion. New faces await the skipper’s return to the UK in March, including all-rounder Andy Wakely and slow bowler Justin Waldron. Hampshire under 16 spinner Robbie Pitts-Mellan moves to Sarisbury Athletic although he remains keen to play for his hometown club on Sundays and midweeks. The cricket club will be participating in the Parish Council event “Healthy Start To Summer 2014” on Sunday 30th March at Priory Park, Bishop’s Waltham (11am-2pm). Anyone who completes a contact form will be entered into a prize draw at the event designed to promote a healthy lifestyle across all age ranges. The club’s junior section has been bolstered by a substantial donation of kit for 2014 from Michael Crouch, managing director of Upham-based firm Marquis Motorhomes. Newcomers of all ages and experience are welcome, with all sessions supervised by UKCC2 qualified, Disclosure and Barring Service (formerly CRB) checked coaches. A Garden Built To Last? Homeowners often wish to add value to a property, whilst creating their ideal living space. Understanding the pitfalls of inferior preparation, products and craftsmanship is a must. Mike Warman, Director of Aura Landscapes, is passionate about first-rate standards. “Some companies will take short-cuts, especially in preparation. This is a fundamental area to get right. It’s a huge part of the overall cost and can be the difference between your garden lasting one summer, or decades. “Please don’t assume all landscaping companies install to British Standards, and offer warranty on their products and services. This is simply not the case,” Mike concludes. If you are investing in a landscaped garden, ensure you are working with the best. Check references, guarantees, and their commitment to install to British Standards. If you’d like your outdoor haven for the warmer seasons, contact Aura Landscapes on 02380 434231. www.auralandscapes.co.uk.

GARDENING
A Pet Project By Pippa Greenwood, www.pippagreenwood.com
There’s always a lot to say about small pests such as greenfly, caterpillars, vine-weevil and so forth, but early in the year it’s some of the bigger ‘residents’ which can really drive you around the bend. I’m talking about cats and dogs. What can you do to ensure that you continue to garden happily, successfully and safely, despite the fact the garden is visited by cats and dogs… and without harming these lovely creatures either? You may need to consider actively fencing off one part of the garden for your dog, and trying to keep another area completely dog free. If you have problems with dogs coming in from next door, then it’s essential that you make repairs to fences. Now is a good time because there’s relatively little plant foliage to hide holes, gaps or loose panels in fencing. Remember that the dog is also likely to be able to squeeze underneath or around many types of fence, 24
so you may need to use chicken netting or similar. Don’t forget that gates as well as fences need to be dog-proofed, and never left open for the dog to wander through. If you really have a serious problem that this won’t resolve then you can try a fox deterrent such as ‘Fox-Watch’. Sometimes a few strategically planted dense and prickly shrubs such as pyracantha may help to deter digging paws. Obviously you don’t want to cause the animal actual harm, but something sharp, prickly or simply very dense can act as a good deterrent. Next door’s cat or others in the neighbourhood are trickier to deal with as unfortunately they do tend to try and do their ‘toileting’ along the edges of their own territory, making your garden a prime target area. If your cat or a neighbour’s cat is a problem, bear in mind that the more bare soil there is, the more likely that a cat will start to use it as its loo. Ground cover planting is essential and you could always use temporary annual flowers to fill in gaps between longer term planting. If you find that these too are scuffed up shortly after you have planted them, then the best thing to do is cover
newly planted areas of bedding with an arch of chicken mesh or with sticks with taut string tied between them. Obviously this will look a mess but can be removed promptly once the plants have rooted well and started to establish. I have found that the electronic cat deterrent ‘CatWatch’ works very well too. Mulching materials can sometimes cause problems and despite what the label says, many gardeners have told me that they found that the cocoa shell mulches seem to attract cats. Generally speaking soggy mulches like this or anything with a strong smell do tend to deter cats, as they hate digging in moist material. Take extreme care if dogs use the garden as cocoshell mulches can prove fatal to them. Mulches made of large pebbles or stones also tend to keep them at bay, but smaller diameter gravel or shingle seems to be quite attractive to some cats. Areas of freshly sown seed look very attractive to a cat or dog and again are best protected either by chicken mesh or sticks and string. Remember to keep the string taut at all times, as there’s a slight risk that birds could become entangled in it.
