We are often spoilt for Estate Agents on our High Streets offering the same old thing but when it comes to value for money, good Estate Agents are hard to find. However, you might just find one such agent is at your fingertips - Andrew Ross Property Agents - who are Estate Agents selling and renting a range of properties in the Meon Valley area of Hampshire. Like any established agent they are open long hours, provide highly detailed marketing brochures, which are also available to download, and supply indispensable information during the initial stages of house hunting. Talk to Company founder Andrew Ross and he will tell you that the internet has changed the way most people find a new home with up to 90% of initial enquires starting online. He says that because of the dominance of the internet in marketing all ranges of property, his company is able to provide a high quality service and for a considerably lower cost, charging only 1% including vat, meaning they are hard to beat. The great majority of property-owners recognise the benefits of engaging a local, full-service agent who will work for and with them to manage the transaction end-to-end. When selling what is often their most valuable asset, is it not refreshing to know that someone is bringing down the cost of moving home? If you would like more information you can contact Andrew Ross on 01489 891773 or visit the website andrew-ross.co.uk 2

MOTORING

Mobile Motoring Madness By James Baggott, editor of Car Dealer Magazine

Next time you’re sitting in a traffic jam, or waiting at the lights, or on a motorway even, take a little look around you and – especially if it’s during a dark commute home – I’m willing to wager you’ll be surrounded by countless illuminated, bowed heads of motorists checking their phones. You can spot them easily, like rule-breaking beacons. With music streaming services like Spotify working through car audio systems, social media streams constantly pinging away with notifications, not to mention text messages and emails, the temptation to not touch the phone is too hard for most to resist. Can you honestly say that you’ve never touched your phone while driving? I can’t. British Car Auctions recently quizzed 445 motorists and 95 per cent of them said they’d seen another driver using a mobile phone. Some 82 per cent of them had seen someone texting or emailing 6

too and 42 per cent admitted to doing it themselves. The official advice is to turn it off, but the problem with that is phones have become intrinsically linked to our cars. Most modern models offer Bluetooth connectivity that lets you take calls at the wheel, stream music from your handset, while some even let you access the web from the car using your phone’s signal. While I can’t deny all these features are handy, could it be the case that car manufacturers are sending out the wrong message? Are they condoning the use of a mobile phone behind the wheel by implementing all this technology? A report from Canada found drivers talking on handsfree devices were ‘far more likely to make errors on the road’. And, come on, admit it, when you’re having a conversation on handsfree are you REALLY paying attention properly? I contacted the Association of Chief Police Officers to ask them what would happen to a driver who had an accident while talking, perfectly legally, on a handsfree kit. A spokesman said the likelihood was that the driver would be prosecuted for driving without due care and attention or, in more extreme cases, for

dangerous driving. And it’s already happened. One case in 2008 involved lorry driver Mervyn Richmond, 49, who had been talking to his mother for 23 minutes using Bluetooth in his cab when he ran into back of a Transit van, killing its passenger. He was jailed for four-and-a-half years for dangerous driving. Roger Vincent, of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, told The Daily Mail at the time: ‘When you are using any mobile while driving you are four times more likely to have an accident.’ FOUR times. So here’s my idea. I think it’s time for a manufacturer to introduce a device that stops your phone working when the engine is on. A sort of enforced airplane mode that means no calls, texts, emails or data can be received, but music can still be played if it’s plugged in. It would take a brave manufacturer to make the move, but marketed correctly it could be a winner. With mobile phone use behind the wheel increasing, despite the threats of points and fines, now has to be the time to take drastic measures. But is there a car maker brave enough to make the move first? Who knows… What do you think? Tweet me @ CarDealerEd and let me know.

Your Community Needs You Helping Older People In Rural Hampshire As part of its Older People’s Wellbeing activities, Hampshire County Council’s Village Agent scheme has provided support to more than 3,800 older people in rural areas. The Village Agent provides volunteers who are happy to spare a few hours to visit older and vulnerable residents in their community, to provide advice and information on what’s happening locally as well as give information on support services available. A further 15 volunteers are to be recruited, taking the total up to 60 Village Agents across Hampshire. In particular, Agents are needed in rural communities near Winchester including Owslebury, Crawley, Sparsholt and Hurley as well as parts of the Test Valley, the New Forest and East Hampshire. Village Agents offer support tailored to the needs of individuals, for example, meals on wheels, blue badge applications, community transport, befriending schemes, Better Balance for Life exercise classes, as well as home safety checks thanks to training from Hampshire Fire and Rescue. According to the charity Age UK, a million older people in the UK haven’t spoken to anyone for a month. Village Agents will help them find the support they need and reduce the risk of isolation. To find out more about becoming a Village Agent contact Age Concern on Tel. 01962 892443 or email villageagent@ageconcernhampshire.org.uk 10

ADVERTISER FEATURE

Lasting Powers of Attorney In April 2009, great-grandmother Betty Figg, 86, who was suffering from dementia, was living with her daughter. Social workers arrived at the daughter’s home with police to forcibly remove Betty from the house. Social services did not agree with Betty’s daughter that it was in Betty’s best interests to be cared by her daughter in her daughter’s home. Every day we make decisions about our lives. The ability to make these decisions is called mental capacity. We may not be able to make decisions some or all of the time, perhaps because we have a learning disability, dementia, mental health problem, brain injury or have

had a stroke. In such circumstances doctors and social services have the power to make many decisions based on their view of what is in our best interests. Whilst they should consult with family members, they are not obliged to follow their wishes. Most of us understand the importance of having someone deal with our financial affairs if we are no longer able to ourselves (under a Lasting Power of Attorney for Property and Financial Affairs), but are unaware of the importance of having family members make decisions regarding our health and welfare. If you wish to ensure that such decisions are made by a loved one, rather than by a health or social care professional, you should ensure that you have made a Health and Welfare Lasting Power of Attorney. According to the Alzheimer's Society, 1 in 3 over-65s develop dementia. Thinking and talking about what would happen if our faculties deserted us is uncomfortable. But

it's important to consider how much worse the situation would be if you had a stroke, serious accident or dementia without having created Lasting Powers of Attorney. Younger people also become incapacitated through accident or illness. If you do not have a Lasting Powers of Attorney in place and later become mentally incapacitated, relatives may face long delays and expense in applying to the Court of Protection for authority to make decisions on your behalf. It is crucial for people of all ages, yet very few under 60s have either a Property and Financial Affairs or Health and Welfare Lasting Power of Attorney. It is possible to create both types of Lasting Power of Attorney yourself by visiting www.gov.uk/ power-of-attorney and completing the forms online. You are advised however to seek professional advice as the powers you are granting are far-reaching and careful consideration should be given to your chosen Attorney(s).

Collecting with Roger started early in December and as the club has reduced slightly in size it was decided to only do door to door collections on six nights instead of the usual eight. We still did our static collections at Sainsbury’s and Budgen’s and in Wickham Square and Bishop’s Waltham High Street. Our total collection was around £3.8k. Thank you everyone for your generosity once again. Bishop’s Waltham Carnival and Show will be held on Saturday 13th June 2015. The format will be the same as previous years with a Motorcade followed by the Carnival Procession leading to the Show in Hoe Road Recreation Ground. Theme for this year will be Knights and Princesses. It will be good to see some Floats in the carnival procession with this theme. More details to come in later months. Bishops Waltham Rotary Club

And Another Thing... by Tom Hughes

Spring being just around the corner reminded me of the time last year me and Sarah decided to visit a wedding show to give us some inspiration for our impending Big Day. Who knew that love and happiness was such a serious business?

After filling out our registration form with the usual false name and address, we were allowed inside a vast exhibition hall full of stands dedicated to all things fluffy and amazing.

strip your flesh down to the bone. I whispered to Sarah -

The first stall was selling imitation red Post Boxes. Here was my first conundrum.

“Of course she knows it’s a wedding show.”

“Sarah, what are they for?”

“Then what is she doing here with that owl?”

“Our guests post their cards inside them so they don’t get lost.”

“Well what do you think she’s doing?”

“Well that’s no good for us is it?” “Why?” “We get married at five o’clock and last post on a Saturday is 12.45.” “Tom, if you are going to mess about all day we might as well go home now.” Chastened, we proceeded down the next aisle. Walking past photographers and old men in peaked caps waving pictures of Rolls Royces, I stumbled upon the strangest stall I had ever seen. A woman was sitting behind a counter which contained nothing more than a few photographs. Then I saw it. Behind her, sat on its perch was a real life tawny owl. Yellow and black saucer eyes, a beak designed for eviscerating rodents and claws that could probably

20

“Do you think she’s got her events mixed up? Do you think she knows this is a wedding show?”

Why someone would need an owl to get married I couldn’t begin to fathom. I decided to make some enquiries myself. The lady smiled as I leaned forward and asked, “You haven’t by any chance got a pea green boat and a pussy cat hidden under there have you?” Another sharp dig from Sarah. Through a fixed smiled she explained to me that the owl’s job was to deliver the rings at the ceremony – fly across the venue to the handler who would present them to the best man. “Yes but then who signs for them? Surely the owl can’t – “ I was then dragged away to a tax-dodging generic coffee emporium, where Sarah had to have a little word. So, after a good talking to, we continued with our investigations. But there seemed nothing here

that was of any practical use for the Groom About Town. It was then I chanced upon the kind of stall I had been waiting for all day - the eyebrow stall! I elbowed my way to the front of the queue, muttering something about sorting out the caterpillars above my eyes. “Tom, please don’t.” But it was too late. I presented my eyebrows to the nice lady. She glanced from one fuzzy outcrop to the other, emitting a worrying tut-tut with each inspection. “Well sir, it’s gonna take a lot of hard work, but together, we’ll get there.” She then rolled out a set of miniature tools that were either for repairing the disaster above my eyes, or she had stolen a Lilliputian’s car repair kit. She then produced a tiny comb and proceeded to comb my eyebrows (I’m not making this up by the way). Then suddenly, some powder appeared. Wary of edging into guy-liner territory, I was about to object when she reassured me, “Don’t worry about the powder sir, it’s waterproof.” This confused me further. “Madam, I anticipate my wedding day being emotional. However, I don’t think I’ll be reciting my vows whilst standing on my head. In any case, I thought you might be trimming them, I believe the correct term is shaping?

She stopped in mid-powder. “I’m sorry sir, we don’t do that here. That’s a different stall.” I turned to Sarah who, noting that I appeared to be wearing a slightly more alarmed expression than usual, declared that maybe arranging our wedding was something best left to the experts, which as it transpired, didn’t include me. “Look Tom,” she sighed, “On the day, just turn up and leave the rest to your bride, OK?” I think life goes smoother if we all just play to our strengths, don’t you? GARDENING

Facing North by Pippa Greenwood www.pippagreenwood.com www.pippagreenwood.com

The problem I am asked about most frequently is one that almost all of us have: “What do I do with a north-facing wall?” What everyone wants to know is what you can plant up it but more, what can you do to turn your luck around and increase the chances of your chosen plant not just surviving but also thriving.

Getting the right plant for the spot is essential and I’ve listed some great north-facing wall climbers below. But first consider whether you need year round cover (and so something evergreen) or would accept a deciduous climber that will lose its leaves but keep a framework of stems, or if you could live with an herbaceous climber that will die back each year and return again in the spring. If the wall is very shaded it may be worth reducing the shade somewhat if you can. Nearby wall-shrubs could be pruned back or overhanging trees crown lifted (the lower branches removed) or crown thinned (the crown’s density reduced). Walls may be a dark grey or brick colour but you can make the spot considerably more plant friendly if you change the colour of the wall before planting. Use of a pale-coloured masonry paint on the wall will cause light to be reflected back to the plant and make it more likely to thrive even if conditions are a bit gloomy. Consider growing more than one climber to increase the season of interest and so the amount

26

of time that the wall looks good – perhaps a climber for spring and another for summer. Flowering may be reduced if the site is gloomy and so to maximize your climber’s flower power make sure that you apply sulphate of potash as this will increase flowering potential somewhat. Follow the instructions on the pack, and generally try to apply it to the root area in late summer and then again in spring. Make sure that the climber goes in at a good distance from the wall up which it is to grow. A minimum of about 45cm (18in) should mean that it can develop a good strong root system and this will help to keep it growing well and strongly even in this rather shaded spot. Self-clinging climbers such as the climbing hydrangea or a variegated ivy can look great and help to provide at least part of the interest you’re after for your north-facing wall, but even these often need a bit of a helping hand to get them started – train the stems on to the wall and protect from wind until they get properly attached.

TOP PLANTS FOR NORTH-FACING WALLS & FENCES Akebia Quinata (the chocolate vine). Pretty pale green foliage with vanilla perfumed purple-brown flowers in late spring.

creamy white flowerheads. Lathyrus Latifolius. the everlasting pea. An herbaceous climber with small clusters of pinky purple flowers throughout the summer and in to early autumn

Berberidopsis Coralline, evergreen twining climber. Prefers acidic soil, clusters of deep red flowers in early autumn.

Lonicera x Americana, a deciduous twining climber. Classic honeysuckle flowers in yellow flushed red and with a gorgeous perfume during the summer.

Clematis, twining climber. Many smaller flowered varieties such as white flowered, rampant C. montana do well. Codonopsis Convolvulacea. A herbaceous climber with pretty bell or saucer shaped violet coloured flowers in summer.

Lonicera x Tellamanniana, a deciduous twining climber. Bright yellowy orange honeysuckle flowers in late spring and summer.

Humulus Lupulus, the hop, a twining climber. The golden leafed ‘Aurea’ will perform quite well as long as the shade is not too intense or the site windy.

Vitis coignetiae, a self-clinging, rampant climber. Renowned for its fabulous autumn colour.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Justin Friel feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving

people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Meon Valley area and Justin is finding that his approach is

a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done

work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Justin a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!
