Hello and Welcome At the time of writing my editor's letter this month, spring has - at last - arrived. In reality it’s so late it’s really early summer rather than spring. My apologies if, by the time you read this, it appears to have departed again! I generally don't write about the weather, after all you can see it for yourselves, but having lifted my head above the clouds I now realise that throughout the winter (the loooong winter) people have been out there planning events knowing that the cold couldn't last for ever. So more than usual we have a great selection of outdoor activities to draw your attention to – The Bishop’s Waltham Carnival of course, the Droxford County Fair, fêtes and open days. We have a feature on the National Open Gardens scheme and the dates for this area. We’ve listed all the events we know about even if a little further afield on our website DiscoverCommunity.co.uk. Of course with the warmth and sunshine comes growth in our gardens. Although sitting out in the sun for half an hour in early May was joyous, that was only the case when my eyes were shut. When I opened them I saw a winter of neglect in my garden with some shrubs standing naked of leaf, never to be clothed again, and others

moving into any vacant space they could find at an alarming rate. Initially it was quite satisfying pulling up a few weeds and trimming the odd tree (albeit that kitchen scissors didn't do much of a job, the secateurs being long since lost in the undergrowth somewhere). But once the pile of waste built up, arms were scratched and ankles bitten, my enthusiasm for actually finishing the job disappeared behind a cloud. Yes I admit, I scuttled inside and went straight to the gardening section in here. From a tidy up to a redesign, we really have some great local people to help out. Tania PS: We are now on facebook! Bugs and Beasties

by Pippa Greenwood

Bugs and beasties are really thriving in this warmer weather, so just how should you deal with the most common problems you are likely to encounter at this time of year? Aphids Greenfly and blackfly, also known as aphids, can be a real menace as they suck sap from your plants and can transmit viruses at the same time. Aphids breed incredibly rapidly, so regular control is necessary. • Check plants regularly and either spray with a suitable insecticide or a soap or plant oil based insecticide • Use biological controls – they’re totally safe for all other creatures and of course leave no residues • Use a strong jet of water to blast the aphids off plants, but do a thorough job or else they will soon be back up and causing damage Caterpillars Caterpillars come in all shapes, sizes and colours, but can do a lot of damage as they munch their way through your plants and perhaps even into your vegetables. • Hand pick the pest where possible and either squash or place on the bird table. They’re easiest to spot at dusk or very early in the morning. • Spray with a suitable contact insecticide or better still use the Nemasys Caterpillar biological control. • Some caterpillars, in particular the Tortrix Moth produce quantities of fine webbing which they use to bind leaves or other plant parts together to create particularly safe shelters for themselves. It’s hard for a pesticide to actually reach them so hand picking or squashing is often the best answer. • Cover caterpillar-susceptible crops such as calabrese, broccoli and other brassicas with Envirofleece or Enviromesh. Woodlice Woodlice often cause a lot of concern, however these little creatures are rarely responsible as they simply

6

do not have adequately strong mouthparts. They can cause damage to soft new growth or occasionally to soft-fleshed fruits such as strawberries but can’t tackle tougher plant growth. You may see them at the ‘scene of the crime’ and presume that they have caused the initial damage but they have probably moved in to clean up a lot of the debris created by other creatures. Earwigs Earwigs can cause quite a bit of damage, particularly on the flowers of plants such as clematis and dahlias, where they nibble out large quantities of petal or occasionally leaf. Try trapping them using an inverted flowerpot on top of a bamboo cane. The bamboo cane and pot should be positioned amongst susceptible plants and the pot needs to be stuffed loosely full of hay, straw or similar material. The earwigs climb in there to hide and the pots can them simply be emptied out on a regular basis. Mildew Powdery mildew is also a problem at this time of year; it coats plant leaves, stems, buds and sometimes even petals with a white flowery deposit. Sometimes the mildew can also prevent fruits from swelling normally, cause the leaves to become distorted and even fall early. Prompt action is essential and if you wish you can use a proprietary fungicide but check the label carefully for suitability. Keep the damage to a minimum in the first instance by ensuring that the plants are kept well watered. In addition try to ensure a good flow of air around the plants. A bit of careful pruning or weeding often helps too. Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood.com where you can sign up for Pippa’s free newsletter and receive a free ebook on organic gardening, and buy a great range of gardening products including Nemasys caterpillar, slug, ant and other biological controls, Enviromesh, Envirofleece and a hand-picked selection of garden products

Up to one in two woman and one in five men over the age of 50 will fracture a bone, mainly due to osteoporosis. Awareness of bone health means that people can make simple lifestyle changes to help prevent future deterioration of their bones, and there are specific treatments that have been proved to prevent further fractures for older people. We have a Support Group which meets monthly in Cosham welcoming people with osteoporosis, or anyone who would like to know more. With knowledgeable committee members, regular speakers, including health care professionals, we enjoy a friendly chat over a cup of tea. For more information please contact Margo on 01329 833114. DIS COV ER NATIONAL G ARDEN S CHEME

The National Garden Scheme In 1927 the National Gardens Scheme was founded with the aim of raising money for the nurses of the Queen’s Nursing Institute (QNI). The idea was to ask individuals to open up quality private gardens for ‘a shilling a head’. At that time garden visiting was already a well-established pastime, but only for a privileged few. However in the first year of the NGS over £8,000 was raised from visitors to 609 gardens. A network of volunteer County Organisers was set up and by 1931 over 1,000 private gardens were open. Country Life magazine produced a handbook, known as “The Yellow Book” because of its bright cover. After the Second World War, the National Health Service took on the District Nursing Service, but money was still needed to care for retired nurses and invest in training so the NGS continued as before. Then in 1948 the NGS offered to join forces with the National Trust to restore and preserve important gardens and, in return, the National Trust opened many of its most prestigious gardens. Despite massive inflation in the post-war years, the entrance fee was held at one shilling. More realistic entrance fees were introduced in the 1970s and the gardens began to raise significant donations. In 1980 The National Gardens Scheme Charitable Trust was established as an independent charity, with Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother as Patron and Her Royal Highness Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester as President. In 1984 Macmillan Cancer Relief joined the list of beneficiary charities. In the years that followed other charities joined including Marie Curie Cancer Care, Help the Hospices and Crossroads Caring for Carers. Of the original gardens that were opened, 120 are accessible for the 85th anniversary in 2012. In addition around 3700 more gardens will be open raising around £2.6 million. Originally the gardens were predominantly the large grounds of stately homes with teams of gardeners maintaining them. But now many

more small gardens open, from cottages to terraced houses and in a community effort many neighbouring and nearby properties open their gates on the same day to enable visitors to delight in a range of styles and plants within a few hours. As much part of a day out to see the gardens is the opportunity to buy plants and to enjoy tea and cakes. Around 80% of the funds raised by both entry to the gardens and from the sale of plants and refreshments goes back to the NGS and in turn to their nominated charities. If you are a regular visitor then the NGS still produces its Yellow Book which is a directory of gardens open throughout the UK (available from the website or from bookshops), and county booklets which are available from libraries or can be downloaded from the website. In addition both regular and occasional visitors can benefit from using the excellent NGS website (www.ngs.org.uk) where you can search within a region and even narrow the results down to a specific day. Inspiration for your garden, raising money for charity and cake – it doesn’t get much better than that! (For Scottish Gardens visit www.scotlandsgardens.org)

Painting the The Town Red (and blue and pink and green!) Tucked away in a back street of Bishops Waltham is an interiors shop with a bit of a difference. Amanda Redwin launched rethunk! in Brook Street in March, selling what she describes as ‘rethunk’ furniture, home accessories, gifts and art works. For the previous year Amanda had been hand painting preloved furniture in her studio at home and selling it mainly by word of mouth under the name The Lady Loves to Paint. Now Amanda is still painting as The Lady Loves to Paint but has opened her own shop with an on-site studio where customers can see what she is working on while they browse. Everything in the shop is hand painted, revamped or made from reclaimed materials. The focus is on colour and design and aims to change our perceptions about interiors. “Painting preloved furniture is about so much more than using just one or two pale or neutral colours and distressing back with sandpaper. I like to think of each item as a canvas and piece of art in its own right even if this sometimes means going against the grain and being a bit outrageous - after all I can always re paint it!”. Alongside the hand painted furniture Amanda has a range of revamped home accessories including lampshades which create the most amazing patterns on the ceiling, artworks painted on reclaimed canvases and funky wooden signs with inspiring messages which make original gifts. “We currently have a fantastic stock of reclaimed Edwardian pine floor boards which we are using for all sorts of pieces including mirrors, signs, lighting, and shelving. The natural patina on this wood is so beautiful and

14

where possible I leave this showing to enhance the end result”. Amanda also undertakes comissions so a piece can be customised to fit the personality of the owner, and the decor of their home. Amanda’s view is ‘How we furnish our homes tells a story about us and rethunk! tells a story of individualism, distinction and prestige about my customers.’ In one corner of the shop lies another string to Amanda’s bow in the shape of a colourful tree wall mural surrounded by the letters of the alphabet and made using newspaper, wallpaper and paint. “Murals are something I adore doing as they give me an opportunity to be really creative on a large scale. I like to use a variety of media to create texture and interest and when I am doing this for a child’s room especially it gives them an opportunity to be involved in the whole process from design to creation”. rethunk! is already proving a destination for shoppers in Bishops Waltham with comments like ‘just what the village needs, quirky and unique items at affordable prices’ and ‘what a lovely addition to BW, it's wonderful to have such an original shop here’. The shop is open Tuesday to Saturday. “On Sunday and Monday I am most likely to be found scouring the local tips, bootsales and charity shops for new finds and customer pre-orders”. You can find out more about rethunk! and see more of Amanda’s work at www.facebook.com/ theladylovestopaint or by telephone on 01489 891325 / 07961729708. Hampshire RoamAbility If you have a mobility scooter and the means to transport it, why not join Hampshire RoamAbility? We ramble all over Hampshire and fringes of neighbouring counties, three or four a month in the summer and one or two in the winter, and welcome those who are mobility challenged, as well as anyone able bodied and family members. We plan rambles that are free of stiles, kissing gates and other obstructions. The New Forest, in particular, is one of our favourite destinations as well as many coastal rambles. It is a lifeline for those of us who are unable to walk very well; it means being able to get out into the countryside and offers the chance to

18

meet new friends and see interesting places. We also campaign for better access to the countryside and work with other access groups to get difficult barriers and gates replaced. If this is of interest to you, please contact The Secretary, HRA on 02380 293156 and we will be pleased to give you much more information.

DISCOVER LOCAL NEWS

Local Community Champions on The One Show BBC’s The One Show Comes to Wickham As part of BBC’s The One Show Community Champions series, two special people, Barry and Chris Samways were nominated by 1st Wickham Scout Group as Champions of Wickham community. Barry is Group Scout Leader and Chris is Beaver Scout Leader to the members of the 1st Wickham Scout Group all aged between 6 and 18 who selflessly give time and energy to Wickham’s community through their scouting. TV Chef and presenter, Ainsley Harriott got the show on the road on 1st May by helping all members of 1st Wickham Scout Group to arrange a surprise meal around the campfire to honour Chris and Barry. Firstly, under the guise of a school project, Maria Ackland, Head Teacher of Wickham Church of England Primary School fooled the guests of honour into erecting a marquee in the school grounds, not letting on it was to be used as shelter during the day of filming. Teams of Scouts and Beavers then spent the morning with Ainsley working for food, grafting for grub in and around Wickham. It’s was a bit like the old bob-a-job which is now refreshed as Scout Community Week.

More Than A Baker’s Dozen from Stainers Bakery

Stainers Bakery provided bread rolls for a cleaned oven. Stewart’s Butchers gave 100 burgers and sausages for clean windows. McCarthy’s Super Stall gifted vegetables and charcoal for shelf stacking and pricing. Westlands Farm Shop offered further burgers and sausages for a clean tractor and plough and the Wickham Co-operative Shop donated all that was left to be required to host such an

20

event for helping customers with bag packing. The Co-operative had already generously granted £10,000 to the Wickham Scout Group to help build their new headquarters. The young people spent the afternoon preparing and cooking the food in the school kitchens and on BBQ fires under Ainsley’s direction and with the support of dinner ladies, kindly provided by Hampshire County Council Catering Services. With everything ready, Barry and Chris were escorted to the new Scout headquarters site ready to take part in what they thought was a local TV interview about the new building. They certainly didn’t expect to see Ainsley and the crew from The One Show with the Scout’s big surprise! The icing on the cake was the cheering crowd of over one hundred young Scouts smiling and waving from the Conservation area campfire. Wiping away the tears of joy, Barry and Chris and all their friends ended the day with fabulous feast and a campfire sing song. Ashley Wilson email: aandl.wilson@btinternet.com 07725478919

Townhill Park House home of The Gregg School

A seat of learning, a testament to timeless British architecture, a sanitary sanctuary for injured servicemen and women and, of course, a family home.

Townhill Park House has transcended time in numerous guises but through all has retained a certain proud and majestic heritage. The use of this grand and prestigious house has changed many times and yet unlike many of its contemporary buildings, Townhill Park House remains a building of generous proportions and designed beauty. The house itself has undergone many changes but nothing can take

26

away the heritage and deep history that lies behind the heavy oak doors that guard, retain and hide the identity of the house. In its formative days, Townhill Park House was part of the original manor farm and later during the late 1700s it was converted to become a gentleman’s residence. By 1897 Townhill Park House was acquired by the first Lord Swaythling, Ivor Montagu for his eldest son and heir, Louis Montagu, for the impending marriage of Louis to Lady Gladys Goldsmid. On the death of his father, Louis became the second Lord Swaythling. In 1911 Louis Montagu started a programme of improvement and renovation for Townhill Park House. Louis employed the eminent young architect, Leonard Rome Guthrie who oversaw improvements and renovations to the building. Louis also employed the famous garden designer and horticulturalist of the time, Gertrude Jekyll, to establish the detailed gardens, designing framed views, yew hedging, dry stone walling and the magnificent sunken garden. they planned, built and created the gardens that surrounded the house. In 1927 the house was occupied by the third Lord Swaythling, Stuart - son of Lord Louis - after his father’s death. Lord Stuart moved into the house with his wife Lady Mary. When the Second World War broke out in 1939, Lord Stuart loaned the house to the Red Cross, where it became a convalescent home for soldiers. After the war in 1948, Lord and Lady Swaythling divorced and Townhill Park House and the estates were sold. The estates were divided into lots and most were bought for housing development. However, the house and 30 acres were bought by Middlesex County Council. Under the ownership of Middlesex County Council, the House was used as a residential

boarding school for girls; the use remained unchanged until 1970. In the years from 1970-85, Townhill Park House afforded yet another use as it provided a suitable location for a hostel for Merchant Navy cadets. After the Cadets left occupation in 1984, the hostel closed and the estate ownership changed again, this time being acquired by Hampshire County Council. The House was then briefly used as a conference centre until 1994, when the expanding Gregg School acquired the house and grounds to provide a facility of education and learning. Today Townhill Park House is flourishing under the ownership of ‘The Gregg’ and is benefiting from the school’s efforts to regenerate the property to its former glory. DISCOVER THE BETTER LIFE

The Better Life Man V Slug

The late poet Dorothy Frances Gurney wrote that: One is nearer God’s Heart in a garden than anywhere else on Earth. That may be true, but preparing the garden, for growing vegetables, is its own special form of purgatory. Nature conspires to make the task as difficult as possible, so we took it in stages. Step One – Peat-less pots are go. We chose green bean and mange tout seeds, and filled the little pots from our compost bin. I soon discovered that it’s a fine line between moist and soggy. And that the ‘which plant comes up first’ sweepstake may be subject to tampering. Anne knows who I mean, so we’ll say no more... Step Two - Mark out the plot, somewhere beyond the cypress tree’s reach to allow for the possibility of direct sunlight. That’s the easy part - it makes you feel like you’re retracing the first, tentative steps of our hunter-gatherer ancestors when they realised that a little porridge might be nice for a change. Step Three - Dig for Pyrrhic victory, trusting that the veg will subsequently be worthy of your muscles’ sacrifice. Once the soil has been dug, it’s time to remove the grass and weeds. The chickens loved some of the grass, but the worms received a reprieve, as they were on active service. Step Four - A ginger beer and a bag of crisps for me. Then the soil needs to be turned over and broken up, to help aerate it (a Scrabble word if ever I heard one). I also removed the stones, which is especially important if you’re planting from seeds. Step Five - Dig in the pots when the little plants look old enough to fend for themselves. Once they were installed, I added enough bamboo

30

canes and netting to deter any opportunistic gastropod-about-garden. Or so I thought. Within a day of completing our defences we were invaded, in a flagrant act of mollusc aggression. We employed slug pellets; we - that is, I - made random security patrols. Enemy snails were sent to the chickens for summary execution, also known by the chooks as ‘snack time’. I did try and reason with the slugs, principally because the chickens weren’t keen on them, but settled for either eviction into the back lane or incarceration in the garden waste bin. But still they came. My vigilance gradually paid off and our plant casualties decreased. Then came that magical day when the first veg flowers appeared. We weren’t out of the woods (or slugs) yet though and you’d be surprised by the amount of slug pellets we used. Honestly, I don’t know where they put it all. Having freshly picked beans, from garden to plate in a matter of minutes, is one of life’s little pleasures. Having to play nettle roulette, when picking the mange tout, because I couldn’t be bothered to keep up with the weeding, was less of a joy. The mange tout still tasted great though and it has me thinking about nettle soup. Next time I’ll let the beanlings grow taller before I plant them in, to give them more of a fighting chance. I’ll also make my own peat-less pots out of old newspaper. It’s the Blue Peter approach to green living. Derek Thompson is a writer and humorist based in the West Country.
