In the last few years there has been a lot Melanie Tinson & Tania Houston of ‘chatter’ about how printed material is dying, and how the internet has taken over the information world. Yet this Discover magazine is not only still here, but in fact doing rather well. We still have people telling us they like it, and advertisers receiving calls from local residents. I work all day on my PC and have my smartphone with me the rest of the time. But if I want the number to call the doctors, I reach for the magazine, it’s much quicker. When I want to see what group to join or what event I could go to, it’s easier to scan down a couple of printed pages. When I want to find a local plumber, electrician or beautician, I’d rather get a quick summary of what they do from an advert. Yes, I’ll often look at their website before I call, but my starting point is from paper.

There has to be a reason for you to open the magazine each month (as well as looking for a local business) Valley y eItchen Locks Hea Meon Vall th and for you to want to keep hold of it. Choosing A Sixth Form That’s Right For You Barton Peveril Science Centre - south elevation showing brise soleil and new courtyard area

Your choice of sixth form college will have a direct impact on your chances of success when the time comes to move on to higher education or employment, both in terms of the subjects you study and the projects and activities you involve yourself in outside the classroom. A good sixth form education is about much more than consistently strong exam results. It’s about finding a place that takes an equal interest in the aspirations and achievements of each individual student and nurtures a diverse, vibrant and positive learning community. The end of Year 10 is the ideal time to start researching your options. Use the summer term to start looking into what the different colleges can offer, where they are located and if they do the courses that you are interested in. Find out when applications open, what the process is and whether you need to meet specific deadlines. It’s really important to visit as many colleges as possible before deciding which ones to apply to. Take a look at their websites and make sure you have a copy of the latest prospectus – most colleges send supplies to schools in early September. 6

Colleges tend to hold open days/ evenings in early summer and again in the autumn, so keep an eye out for dates and start planning! These events are really important because they give you the opportunity to talk to teachers and current students about what courses and college life are really like. Each college will have a different atmosphere and ethos so don’t think that after visiting one they are all going to be same. It’s not until you step through the door that you get a real sense of the ‘wow’ factor and whether a place is right for you as an individual. Below is a checklist to help you decide which college is best for you academically and personally in order to tick the right boxes for university entry and job applications. The advice will also give you an idea of the sorts of questions you should be asking at open events. • Do plenty of background research on careers that interest you • If you already know your ideal career path, the best thing to do is to work backwards by checking out the entry criteria for higher education courses at www.ucas.com This will give you a clearer picture of which

subjects you need to take at A-level and whether vocational courses such as BTEC and Cambridge Technicals are also accepted • Unsure about what you want to do after college? Then the general advice is to take a broad base of subjects that you are interested in or have enjoyed at school. If you didn’t like a subject at GCSE level you are not likely to enjoy it at college and that will affect your chances of success. • Ensure that the colleges you’re considering offer all the subjects you’re keen to do, then check out the entry requirements and differences between the syllabus, facilities and additional activities that support your studies. • Look at how the courses are assessed; are they all exam based, all coursework based or a mixture of the two? The balance will vary between colleges and exam boards so don’t assume it is the same at every college or for every subject. • How flexible are the different colleges with regard to subject combinations and mixing academic and vocational courses?

• Check out the support, guidance and facilities available at each college – things like careers advice, help with time management, library facilities and learning support, if appropriate.

solving and many other skills.

• Is there specialist advice for Gifted & Talented students? What about bespoke programmes for entry to Oxford and Cambridge universities and high-flying performers and sportspeople?

• Think about transport. How will you get to college? Are there buses from where you live? What do they cost?

• Are there opportunities to get involved in lots of clubs and activities and go on trips? Ditto work experience and volunteering? All these things are an important part of a rounded education and really help with university and job applications because they broaden the mind and develop creative, communication, problem-

10 Highlights of a Holiday in Croatia Relax on the beach

View from Rozac

apartment balcon

y

Just a week or two in the unspoilt Dalmatian Coast gives you a taste of what Croatia has to offer; history, sun, sea and lots to do. If you haven’t booked your summer holiday yet here’s ten tempting reasons to choose Croatia this year.

1 Historical town of Trogir;

Wind your way round the narrow, cobbled streets, wine and dine under the palms of the “riva” in view of the super yachts berthed nearby.

2 3

Hire a speedboat for the day.

Swim in the falls of the Krk National Park.

4

Visit Split by boat from Trogir. Walk amongst the Diocletian’s Palace, set within the centre of Split itself

5 Okrug Gornji beach, Ciovo.

Be served drinks while you soak up the sun.

6 From dolphin watching to

spearfishing, bike tours and island hops to Hvar; excursions all start from Trogir so take your pick.

Krk Falls

8

7 Laganini Beach Club... heaven.

8

A day trip to Mostar, Bosnia & Herzegovina.

9

Ride the Cetina River in many ways; by raft, canoe, kayak, abseil or just in a wetsuit and drift downstream.

10 Relax by the pool at

Rozac, a luxury 3 bedroom apartment with two balconies, air conditioning and private pool. Located in the heart of Ciovo island, walking distance to Trogir and five minutes stroll to the beach. When’s the best time to go? Peak season is July and August so it’s bustling and weather is beautifully hot. June and September is quieter and a little cooler.

Some excursions might not operate in May and past 15 September. What’s the currency? Kuna and good value for money at current exchange rates. Do they drive on the left or right? On the right but with the network of water buses and boats you don’t need to hire a car. Rozac apartment is available for rent from May to September. Low cost flights from Gatwick and Heathrow to Split. Call Melanie Tinson on 023 8027 6396 or 07900 307636 for availability and costs. Prices from £450 per week.

Care Options Making The Right Choice Three Oaks Residential Care Home

Solitary confinement is a harsh punishment, but it is also the day to day reality for thousands of elderly people. Home care services can ensure that the basics are covered, but a quick care visit does not begin to counter the loneliness and isolation that many people experience. Admission to a care home can bring an immediate improvement in quality of life but without any significant loss of independence.

That’s what Three Oaks, near Wickham, has done for more than twenty years. It’s a familyowned home, renowned for its beautiful grounds and freshlycooked food. Manager Julie Jacobs says, “Our residents have more social interaction by 10am than many people get in a fortnight. We’re a small team of familiar faces, one of whom might bring a morning drink before another helps with breakfast and personal care.”

Three Oaks’ large conservatory is the venue for a midmorning coffee break, followed by organised activities for those who want them. Then lunchtime, always one of the day’s highlights. With a constant stream of visitors, there’s always something going on. As well as permanent placements, Three Oaks also offers short respite stays and day care. For more information, just drop in or call Julie on 01329 833412.

monthly basis to companies with a weekly payroll for many employees. Processing includes inputting of all data including starters, leavers, P45s, SSP, SMP, SPP, P60sholiday pay etc. They also produce required reports including PAYE payments due, payroll journals to name a few as well as taking care of Year End. GARDENING

Grow Your Own by Pippa Greenwood www.pippagreenwood.com I’m a great fan of home grown vegetables, particularly as growing my own allows me to choose to eat only organically grown fruit and vegetables, which are free from chemical pesticides. Even if you only have a tiny patio garden or backyard, you can brighten up your supper table with some good looking vegetables, home grown in containers. It is important to use large containers. Smaller ones may look fine but most vegetables need an evenly moist compost around their roots at all times, and so a larger volume of compost is much easier to look after. They will need to be positioned in a sunny spot as vegetables won’t crop well in a gloomy position. Growing bags will do but they don’t exactly look good. In addition, they often seem to contain pretty poor compost and, when it comes to keeping growing bags adequately 16

watered, they are nothing short of a nightmare. Large flower pots or planters are the best bet, and you can use terracotta, plastic or glazed pots. Make sure that the containers are well supplied with drainage holes, and that you have a layer of broken pots on top. I suggest using either a standard multi-purpose or a multi-purpose compost mixed with a loam based compost – both produce good crops and are fairly easy to maintain. You can incorporate some controlled release fertiliser granules or feed regularly with a liquid feed.

Provided you have a large and deep container then courgettes are also worth a try, and do remember to keep them well fed. If you like hot pepper and have a sheltered, warm spot then try the crazy looking, heavy cropping ‘Medusa’ or the pretty but hot ‘Etna’. Salad crops can all be grown in a growing bag or other container, and are guaranteed to look good. For some really wacky colour try growing the rich-red stemmed Ruby Chard or ‘Bright Lights’ chard with stems in pink, orange, red, yellow and white.

There are lots of different vegetables that can be grown in containers but sometimes getting the right variety can make all the difference to how well they perform. Check labels or seed catalogues as those particularly well suited to life in a pot are described as so. If you like home grown beans you can use any variety of dwarf French bean, or if you prefer, a runner. The miniature runner, ‘Hestia’, has pretty red and white flowers and doesn’t need a support to climb.

When it comes to maintenance, remember that anything growing in a pot needs more TLC as its roots will not be able to tap into the further reaches of the soil to find moisture and nutrients. Plenty of food and water is a must, and I tend to use a high potash liquid tomato feed, which works a treat. To keep your pots free from slug and snail attacks, try using sticky-backed copper tape stuck in a complete ring around the top of the pot or planter.

Cucumbers can be grown in pots; choose a variety such as ‘Patio Pick’ which should manage to crop well despite its small size.

Once everything is growing well and cropping, don’t forget to pick patio veg regularly if you want the plants to keep cropping.

The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Justin Friel feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving

people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Meon Valley area and Justin is finding that his approach is

a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done

work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Justin a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Local Solicitor Now Has Dream Job Mandy Tourle worked as a Solicitor at Eric Robinson Hedge End until earlier this year, specialising in Probate law, Lasting Powers of Attorney, Wills and Trust, and qualified as a member of the Society for Trust and Estate Practitioners. But when she decided on a change of direction, she thought of her dream job and created her own business. Mandy set up Paperwise Solutions to help people cope with paperwork, after she

experienced first-hand what tackling a mountain of red tape is like after losing a loved one. Mandy, from Hedge End, said, “When Grandad died I helped my mother and my aunt with all the paperwork, as it was a lot for them to cope with. I already dealt with this type of work in my job and understood the bureaucracy that surrounded it, but until you are faced with losing a loved one you cannot appreciate the emotional turmoil that comes with it. As time went on, I realised there was a need for someone like me to help people become more organised, especially older people, whether they have lost a partner or not.” She said, “People may be facing life on their own, or

they may have a life partner who is ailing and they want to get on top of things. They may just want to learn to be more organised or to learn new skills such as mastering the internet to be able to do online shopping – I can help with all that.” Mandy’s services are available to all, not just older people, and include helping people organise and de-clutter their homes. She is also available to give free talks to groups of people – offering tips on how to become more organised. Mandy’s new business does not provide legal services and is not regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority. For more information see advert above. 27

And Another Thing... by Tom Hughes “Tom, I’m sick of wearing glasses, I want my eyes lasered. You should get them done too”.

“Very well sir, have you an appointment?”

“Listen, the nearest I’ll get to a laser is watching Star Wars. Have you seen how much they charge? It’s eye watering”. Pleased with my little joke, I returned to my copy of Ford Mondeo Monthly. Sarah however, was not for dissuading.

“One moment please. I’ll go and speak to our Optician”. Sarah took her seat while I went to examine some frames. “What do you think of these darling?”

“OK then, what about contact lenses?”

A chubby little man with a built up shoe limped into reception “Mr Hughes?”

“No. I’m happy with my glasses. I like looking over them at people. It makes me feel superior”. “Well you can feel superior tomorrow, we’ve got a double appointment at the Opticians”. I hate Opticians, it’s the fear of getting the test wrong and feeling stupid. I usually end up guessing. And I don’t like sitting in the dark either. The sliding doors swished open and we were greeted by a nice young man who I guessed from the green name badge went by the name of Adam. I thought I’d put him at his ease. “Hello. I’ve just been next door to Co-Op Travel asking about an eye test and they told me to come in here”. “Tom stop it, he won’t get your silly joke”, Sarah said. 28

“Yes. Mr and Mrs Hughes”.

“Put them back, you look like Michael Gove”.

I nodded, gulping nervously. A fat index finger beckoned me inside. “Come with me dear”. Dear? I looked at Sarah, who urged me to follow saying, “Go on, we haven’t got all day.... dear”. He paused at the door to his torture chamber, looked me up and down and said, “I’ve not.... tested you before, have I?” “I don’t think so”. “No. I’d have remembered. Come in then”. Through his enormous lenses his big saucer eyes bored into me. Sat in the hot seat, I watched as he removed his glasses and began cleaning them with his tie. He looked up at me once more. His eyes had disappeared! Then back on went the glasses and...

zoom! The huge pupils returned. “Now relax while I dim the lights”. If I wasn’t nervous beforehand, I was now. Letters appeared on the whiteboard opposite. My torturer settled in besides me, a little too close for comfort for my liking. “Now can you read left to right, top to bottom”. “K no er, Y? “Now Tom, don’t guess”. The letter business over, the Optician then did something really weird. Grabbing a torch, he put his face right next to mine, as in right next, and shone it into my eyes. All I could hear and feel was his breath on my cheek. When, for a second, our noses touched, it was all I could do to stay seated. Outside in reception I found Sarah, relaxing after her examination. “Well I won’t be going in there again. I nearly chinned him. I thought he was going to throw the lips on me”. “Tom, he uses an ophthalmoscope to test for high blood pressure, you dope”. “Oh, well he could have told me”. Then it was time for our contact lenses. Adam demonstrated

the technique for putting them in. We followed suit. After handing over a small fortune we both stumbled outside, now with our twenty twenty vision supposedly restored.

Head To Toe Pilates

Building strength from the inside out

As we groped our way to the car park, I could hear people tutting and oh-dearing as we passed. One elderly lady stopped me and taking hold of my hand said, “Whatever tragedy has happened my loves, remember, time is a great healer”. I looked at Sarah, she looked at me. Our eyes were both red and streaming.

“I can’t see a blooming thing”. “Neither can I”. “Look this is ridiculous, let’s go back”. We retraced our steps down the high street, doing our best to avoid the lamp posts. Eventually we made it back to the shop. “Listen, can we change our minds? We just need to buy some normal glasses”. “That’s no problem sir, but I think you’ll have to try next door. This is Co-Op Travel”.

Spring Motoring Winter driving is well behind us, but spring brings its hazards too. Iain Betson offers these driving tips to get you safely to summer. 1. Run your AC at least once a week, even in winter. Remember, you don’t have to turn it down to a chill level that a penguin would love; just make sure all is working OK. So it will work when you really need it. 2. Check the fluid levels and, perhaps while you’re at it, give the bodywork a good wash too. Get all the salt deposits off from the wheel arches and underneath. 3. In these months the sun is still quite low in the sky but the glare will be getting stronger.

Don’t just rely on the sun-visor; take a pair of sunglasses with you. 4. April showers will lift all the rubber and other muck out of the tarmac, causing the road surface to be slippery for a time – extra care will be needed when cornering or braking. 5. In springtime, we all like to get out pursuing our pastimes after the dark winter months. For many, this will mean using the roads, but not as motorists. Be aware of extra walkers, joggers, cyclists, horses and riders 6. Winter takes its toll on road surfaces and traffic makes a small pothole bigger. It doesn’t just make for a bumpy ride; hitting a pothole can throw the steering out of alignment and, if you have alloy wheels, crack the spokes. Do your best to avoid potholes, but not at the expense of swerving dangerously to avoid them.

Bishops Waltham Rotary Club Carnival and Show The carnival and show this year will be on the 13th June 2015 with the theme Knights and Princesses. The format will be the Motorcade leaving Elizabeth Way then through the town at 12pm followed by the Carnival procession. This all leads to the Show Ground at Hoe Road Recreation Ground. This year we would like to build the Carnival up to how it used to be, so think of Rio or Notting Hall with all those exotic displays and get together a group and have a go yourselves!

If you would like to join us either as a full member or friend, helping out with events, then please contact us

www.bishopswalthamrotary.org.uk/contact.html This month saw us lose Keith Henderson, a long standing member, he lost his battle with illness and will be sadly missed. 36
