Hello and Welcome We often entertain our teenage children with stories of how life was when we grew up. Their favourite topic is tales of the world without computers and mobile phones, and of great amusement is the thought that the phone wouldn’t fit in your pocket. If you remember, because of the power they used, all mobile phones were fitted into cars. The first one I used which was truly mobile had a battery pack which was the size and weight of a large shoebox filled with lead. And the first laptop computer I was given by my employers wasn’t really portable…so heavy, it was at best ‘transportable’. So many people do say that it was a simpler world then, but having the ability to work from home, to stay in touch with friends and family, to buy online and have it delivered to my door and to find out almost anything I want to instantly is fantastic. One of the other things I love about the internet is that we can have a team of people working on the magazines and it doesn’t matter where they live. Our designer Heather is in Scotland, our administrator Lauren lives
in Kent and Marina, our website manager, lives in Serbia. Still there is a limit. We all still need local tradespeople, gardeners, hairdressers, garages and – of course – someone to fix our computers when they go wrong. And that’s what this magazine is all about. A choice of services in one handy guide and two pages this month of events, for the days when you feel like interacting with the real world rather than just the virtual one! Tania PS: Following on from my article in your last magazine, I have added more updates to my weight loss blog at www.discoveryourtoes.co.uk. DISCOVER GARDENING
Garden Hide and Seek by Pippa Greenwood However much effort you make with your garden, you can be sure that there will still be a few things that look awful. You may have made (or hope to make) beautiful borders, sensational shrubbery and lots more besides, but how do you cope with those things you just cannot seem to hide? A washing line may be essential but rarely adds to the appeal of the garden. If yours consists of two large poles with a line in between, try growing a pretty climber up the poles. If you use a self-clinging plant such as variegated ivy it won’t need any additional support. Alternatively make a chicken wire, trellis ‘box’ or frame around the posts and then allow the climber to scramble up, using plant ties if necessary. Summer flowering clematis or sweet pea will look great too. If you do use a more vigorous climber then be prepared to do some intermittent pruning. Decrepit sheds or moth-eaten garages can be a real eyesore. Sometimes a thorough scrub of the walls will do the trick, or why not make a feature out of the shed or garage and re-paint it. Consider erecting a trellis on one or more of the vertical surfaces and grow a selection of favourite climbers up it to make an even more attractive feature. If the garden can be a little gloomy then it helps if you paint any surfaces such as garage or shed walls with a paler colour. If your heating is fuelled by gas from an unattractive and enormous cylinder or oil from a large green tank, you will know that they have to be sited in an accessible position. You can use hazel wattle hurdles to hide them which are perfect as they also match with the adjacent boundary fence. Try using standard
6
fence panels in the same way and again planting them with climbers or scramblers will help. Whatever you do, make sure that you check on it from time to time and remove excessive climber growth so that the tank remains accessible. Is it the neighbouring garden that harbours the eye sore which makes you want to retreat back into your house? Something nasty next door is of course even harder to conceal but why not add a layer of trellis to the top of your existing fence and then use climbers once it is in position. Hold the trellis in position using batons of wood attached to the existing fence posts or special post-joining metal sleeves that you can buy from your fencing supplier or garden centre. Trellis is available in a range of shapes and need not be straight edged so you can create a range of different looks to suit your gardening style. Another option is to erect a pergola or arch to obscure or break up an unsightly view or the eyesore in the neighbour’s garden and adding plants will help to add a bit more height and soften the outline. If you combine some of your favourite flowering climbers with some evergreen planting too, you should even achieve good effects during the seasons when the leaves have fallen from many plants. Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood.com and sign up for Pippa’s free newsletter packed full of gardening hints, happenings, advice and offers and you will also receive a free ebook on organic gardening. Don’t forget that you can buy Nemaslug and other biological controls, antislug matting and tape, Enviromesh and signed books, autumn vegetable packs and a hand-picked selection of garden products from the website too.

DISCOVER LOCAL HISTORY
Southampton Maritime Festival The Hampshire and Wight Trust for Maritime Archaeology on behalf of the Southampton Heritage Federation is delighted to announce the Southampton Maritime Festival, taking place on Sunday 5th and Monday 6th May 2013 at the Ocean Cruise Terminal, Southampton. This exciting new event promises to celebrate the long and proud maritime heritage of Southampton in style. Never before has an event of this scale been seen in Southampton! The Festival will be taking over the docks and water within Dock Gate 4 to bring you a whole host of activities and attractions that hark back to the Second World War with a 1940s theme. There will be a wide range of historic vessels in attendance, including a flotilla of Dunkirk Little ships, numerous displays and demonstrations and even a Lancaster bomber fly over. With so much going on, it’ll be sure to keep the whole family entertained! A highlight of the festival will be the arrival of the Steam Tug Challenge as she returns to Southampton, fresh from her recent Heritage Lottery Funded refit. Challenge, a veteran of the Second World War, will be accompanied by a flotilla of Dunkirk Little Ships. His Royal Highness Prince Michael of Kent, patron of the Dunkirk Little Ships Restoration Trust, will also attend. Heritages buses will provide a park and ride service to the docks from the city centre throughout the event and the SS Shieldhall will offer cruises up and down Southampton Water. Amongst the numerous displays and demonstrations over the course of two days will
12
be Second World War re-enactors, vintage Rolls Royce cars, and the Historical Diving Society demonstrating ‘Hard Hat’ or Standard Diving Gear. Visitors will be able to try their hand at controlling Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs), see the Pufferspheres from the National Oceanography Centre, and learn more about Southampton’s historic trams. They can explore the various exhibits and stalls of heritage organisations and traders or take a pit-stop at one of many eateries while enjoying the live music and entertainment. The fleet of historic vessels will be moored alongside the terminal, waiting to tell their colourful stories. As well as being a fantastic day out for all the family, Southampton Maritime Festival will raise awareness of the city’s rich seafaring traditions. The Hampshire and Wight Trust for Maritime Archaeology is urging local residents in particular to get involved; whether people wish to enjoy the attractions or join in as a valued volunteer, they can help make the festival an event for Southampton to be proud of. The Festival is sponsored by Associated British Ports, Southampton and Williams Shipping. It is supported by Southampton City Council and the National Oceanography Centre. More information and updates can be found at: www.southamptonmaritimefestival.com https://twitter/SotonSeaFest http://www.facebook.com/ SouthamptonMaritimeFestival

Painting the The Town Red (and blue and pink and green!) Tucked away in a back street of Bishops Waltham is an interiors shop with a bit of a difference. Amanda Redwin launched rethunk! in Brook Street in March, selling what she describes as ‘rethunk’ furniture, home accessories, gifts and art works. For the previous year Amanda had been hand painting preloved furniture in her studio at home and selling it mainly by word of mouth under the name The Lady Loves to Paint. Now Amanda is still painting as The Lady Loves to Paint but has opened her own shop with an on-site studio where customers can see what she is working on while they browse. Everything in the shop is hand painted, revamped or made from reclaimed materials. The focus is on colour and design and aims to change our perceptions about interiors. “Painting preloved furniture is about so much more than using just one or two pale or neutral colours and distressing back with sandpaper. I like to think of each item as a canvas and piece of art in its own right even if this sometimes means going against the grain and being a bit outrageous - after all I can always re paint it!”. Alongside the hand painted furniture Amanda has a range of revamped home accessories including lampshades which create the most amazing patterns on the ceiling, artworks painted on reclaimed canvases and funky wooden signs with inspiring messages which make original gifts. “We currently have a fantastic stock of reclaimed Edwardian pine floor boards which we are using for all sorts of pieces including mirrors, signs, lighting, and shelving. The natural patina on this wood is so beautiful and
14
where possible I leave this showing to enhance the end result”. Amanda also undertakes comissions so a piece can be customised to fit the personality of the owner, and the decor of their home. Amanda’s view is ‘How we furnish our homes tells a story about us and rethunk! tells a story of individualism, distinction and prestige about my customers.’ In one corner of the shop lies another string to Amanda’s bow in the shape of a colourful tree wall mural surrounded by the letters of the alphabet and made using newspaper, wallpaper and paint. “Murals are something I adore doing as they give me an opportunity to be really creative on a large scale. I like to use a variety of media to create texture and interest and when I am doing this for a child’s room especially it gives them an opportunity to be involved in the whole process from design to creation”. rethunk! is already proving a destination for shoppers in Bishops Waltham with comments like ‘just what the village needs, quirky and unique items at affordable prices’ and ‘what a lovely addition to BW, it's wonderful to have such an original shop here’. The shop is open Tuesday to Saturday. “On Sunday and Monday I am most likely to be found scouring the local tips, bootsales and charity shops for new finds and customer pre-orders”. You can find out more about rethunk! and see more of Amanda’s work at www.facebook.com/ theladylovestopaint or by telephone on 01489 891325 / 07961729708. Better still pop in and see Amanda at work at

Hampshire RoamAbility If you have a mobility scooter and the means to transport it, why not join Hampshire RoamAbility? We ramble all over Hampshire and fringes of neighbouring counties, three or four a month in the summer and one or two in the winter, and welcome those who are mobility challenged, as well as anyone able bodied and family members. We plan rambles that are free of stiles, kissing gates and other obstructions. The New Forest, in particular, is one of our favourite destinations as well as many coastal rambles. It is a lifeline for those of us who are unable to walk very well; it means being able to get out into the countryside and offers the chance to
18
meet new friends and see interesting places. We also campaign for better access to the countryside and work with other access groups to get difficult barriers and gates replaced. If this is of interest to you, please contact The Secretary, HRA on 02380 293156 and we will be pleased to give you much more information.

Townhill Park House home of The Gregg School
A seat of learning, a testament to timeless British architecture, a sanitary sanctuary for injured servicemen and women and, of course, a family home.
Townhill Park House has transcended time in numerous guises but through all has retained a certain proud and majestic heritage. The use of this grand and prestigious house has changed many times and yet unlike many of its contemporary buildings, Townhill Park House remains a building of generous proportions and designed beauty. The house itself has undergone many changes but nothing can take
26
away the heritage and deep history that lies behind the heavy oak doors that guard, retain and hide the identity of the house. In its formative days, Townhill Park House was part of the original manor farm and later during the late 1700s it was converted to become a gentleman’s residence. By 1897 Townhill Park House was acquired by the first Lord Swaythling, Ivor Montagu for his eldest son and heir, Louis Montagu, for the impending marriage of Louis to Lady Gladys Goldsmid. On the death of his father, Louis became the second Lord Swaythling. In 1911 Louis Montagu started a programme of improvement and renovation for Townhill Park House. Louis employed the eminent young architect, Leonard Rome Guthrie who oversaw improvements and renovations to the building. Louis also employed the famous garden designer and horticulturalist of the time, Gertrude Jekyll, to establish the detailed gardens, designing framed views, yew hedging, dry stone walling and the magnificent sunken garden. Together

they planned, built and created the gardens that surrounded the house. In 1927 the house was occupied by the third Lord Swaythling, Stuart - son of Lord Louis - after his father’s death. Lord Stuart moved into the house with his wife Lady Mary. When the Second World War broke out in 1939, Lord Stuart loaned the house to the Red Cross, where it became a convalescent home for soldiers. After the war in 1948, Lord and Lady Swaythling divorced and Townhill Park House and the estates were sold. The estates were divided into lots and most were bought for housing development. However, the house and 30 acres were bought by Middlesex County Council. Under the ownership of Middlesex County Council, the House was used as a residential
boarding school for girls; the use remained unchanged until 1970. In the years from 1970-85, Townhill Park House afforded yet another use as it provided a suitable location for a hostel for Merchant Navy cadets. After the Cadets left occupation in 1984, the hostel closed and the estate ownership changed again, this time being acquired by Hampshire County Council. The House was then briefly used as a conference centre until 1994, when the expanding Gregg School acquired the house and grounds to provide a facility of education and learning. Today Townhill Park House is flourishing under the ownership of ‘The Gregg’ and is benefiting from the school’s efforts to regenerate the property to its former glory.
