Moyles Court School is within reach for hard working families A new affordable price structure and door to door service means many more families can consider an independent education. Moyles Court School near Ringwood in the New Forest is totally in touch with the families it is looking to attract. With an excellent reputation for education and learning tailored to the individual, Moyles Court has looked at other critical considerations – fees and accessibility to take account of busy parents juggling work commitments. Headmaster Mr Richard Milner-Smith said: “Independent education is sometimes thought of as exclusive, the preserve of the very rich only. Our aim is to overcome that prejudice and to convince many more parents that it is the right choice for their children.” At a time when most independent school parents will be contemplating another above-inflation annual rise in fees, most families at Moyles Court School will be paying an average of 15% LESS next school year than they are this year. Mr Milner-Smith added: “What Moyles Court has to offer is, in a sense, beyond price: an education, tailored to the individual needs of each child, in an idyllic setting. As well as our listed main building, we have enviable modern facilities including a new library, modern sports hall, outdoor multi-sports courts, extensive playing fields and art and ICT studios” “By reducing the financial cost very substantially we intend to show many families that they can in fact afford the undoubted benefits of an independent education for their children.” www.moylescourt.co.uk/join-us

Hello Again Main: 023 8026 6388 www.discovermagazines.co.uk

In the last few years there has been a lot of ‘chatter’ Melanie Tinson & Tania Houston about how printed material is dying, and how the internet has taken over the information world. Yet this Discover magazine is not only still here, but this is our biggest issue to date. You are telling us that you like receiving it, and in turn are using the super advertisers who make the magazine possible.

So why is there still a place for print? Well, speaking personally, I work all day on my PC and have my smartphone with me the rest of the time. But if I want the number to call the doctors, I reach for the magazine, it’s much quicker. When I want to see what group to join or what event I could go to, it’s easier to scan down a couple of printed pages.

ADVERTISER FEATURE

Choosing A Sixth Form That’s Right For You Barton Peveril Science Centre - south elevation showing brise soleil and new courtyard area

Your choice of sixth form college will have a direct impact on your chances of success when the time comes to move on to higher education or employment, both in terms of the subjects you study and the projects and activities you involve yourself in outside the classroom. Carol Geddes, Director of Communications at Barton Peveril College, offers this objective guide to choosing your college. A good sixth form education is about much more than consistently strong exam results. It’s about finding a place that takes an equal interest in the aspirations and achievements of each individual student and nurtures a diverse, vibrant and positive learning community. The end of Year 10 is the ideal time to start researching your options. Use the summer term to start looking into what the different colleges can offer, where they are located and if they do the courses that you are interested in. Find out when applications open, what the process is and whether you need to meet specific deadlines. It’s really important to visit as many colleges as possible before deciding which ones to apply to. Take a look at their websites and 6

make sure you have a copy of the latest prospectus – most colleges send supplies to schools in early September. Colleges tend to hold open days/ evenings in early summer and again in the autumn, so keep an eye out for dates and start planning! These events are really important because they give you the opportunity to talk to teachers and current students about what courses and college life are really like. Each college will have a different atmosphere and ethos so don’t think that after visiting one they are all going to be same. It’s not until you step through the door that you get a real sense of the ‘wow’ factor and whether a place is right for you as an individual. Below is a checklist to help you decide which college is best for you academically and personally in order to tick the right boxes for university entry and job applications. The advice will also give you an idea of the sorts of questions you should be asking at open events. • Do plenty of background research on careers that interest you • If you already know your ideal career path, the best thing to do is to work backwards by

checking out the entry criteria for higher education courses at www.ucas.com This will give you a clearer picture of which subjects you need to take at A-level and whether vocational courses such as BTEC and Cambridge Technicals are also accepted • Unsure about what you want to do after college? Then the general advice is to take a broad base of subjects that you are interested in or have enjoyed at school. If you didn’t like a subject at GCSE level you are not likely to enjoy it at college and that will affect your chances of success. • Ensure that the colleges you’re considering offer all the subjects you’re keen to do, then check out the entry requirements and differences between the syllabus, facilities and additional activities that support your studies. • Look at how the courses are assessed; are they all exam based, all coursework based or a mixture of the two? The balance will vary between colleges and exam boards so don’t assume it is the same at every college or for every subject. • How flexible are the different colleges with regard to subject

combinations and mixing academic and vocational courses? • Check out the support, guidance and facilities available at each college – things like careers advice, help with time management, library facilities and learning support, if appropriate. • Is there specialist advice for Gifted & Talented students? What about bespoke programmes for entry to Oxford and Cambridge universities and high-flying performers and sportspeople? • Are there opportunities to get involved in lots of clubs and activities and go on trips? Ditto work experience and volunteering? All these things are an important part of a rounded education and really help with university and job applications because

they broaden the mind and develop creative, communication, problem-solving and many other skills. • Think about transport. How will you get to college? Are there buses from where you live? What do they cost?

Barton Peveril director of science Nathan Cheung and Amiri construction director Neil Cole with students on site of new science centre

• Try not to be too swayed by your friends when you make your decision. People need different things from their college experience. • Talk to your parents! They may have different views about the best choices for you so try to have a positive discussion

about it. • Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Colleges will be keen to ensure you are enrolled on the best combination of courses based on your academic ability, preferred learning style and career aspirations.

GARDENING

Grow Your Own by Pippa Greenwood www.pippagreenwood.com I’m a great fan of home grown vegetables, particularly as growing my own allows me to choose to eat only organically grown fruit and vegetables, which are free from chemical pesticides. Even if you only have a tiny patio garden or backyard, you can brighten up your supper table with some good looking vegetables, home grown in containers. It is important to use large containers. Smaller ones may look fine but most vegetables need an evenly moist compost around their roots at all times, and so a larger volume of compost is much easier to look after. They will need to be positioned in a sunny spot as vegetables won’t crop well in a gloomy position. Growing bags will do but they don’t exactly look good. In addition, they often seem to contain pretty poor compost and, when it comes to keeping growing bags adequately watered, they are nothing short of a nightmare. Large flower pots or planters are the best bet, and you can use terracotta, plastic or glazed pots. Make sure that the containers are well supplied with drainage holes, and that you have a layer of broken pots on top. I suggest using either a standard multi-purpose or a multi-purpose compost mixed with a loam based compost – both produce good crops and are fairly easy to 10

maintain. You can incorporate some controlled release fertiliser granules or feed regularly with a liquid feed. There are lots of different vegetables that can be grown in containers but sometimes getting the right variety can make all the difference to how well they perform. Check labels or seed catalogues as those particularly well suited to life in a pot are described as so. If you like home grown beans you can use any variety of dwarf French bean, or if you prefer, a runner. The miniature runner, ‘Hestia’, has pretty red and white flowers and doesn’t need a support to climb. Cucumbers can be grown in pots; choose a variety such as ‘Patio Pick’ which should manage to crop well despite its small size. Provided you have a large and deep container then courgettes are also worth a try, and do remember to keep them well fed. If you like hot pepper and have a sheltered, warm spot then try the crazy looking, heavy cropping ‘Medusa’ or the pretty but hot ‘Etna’. Salad crops can all be grown in

a growing bag or other container, and are guaranteed to look good. For some really wacky colour try growing the rich-red stemmed Ruby Chard or ‘Bright Lights’ chard with stems in pink, orange, red, yellow and white. When it comes to maintenance, remember that anything growing in a pot needs more TLC as its roots will not be able to tap into the further reaches of the soil to find moisture and nutrients. Plenty of food and water is a must, and I tend to use a high potash liquid tomato feed, which works a treat. To keep your pots free from slug and snail attacks, try using sticky-backed copper tape stuck in a complete ring around the top of the pot or planter. Once everything is growing well and cropping, don’t forget to pick patio veg regularly if you want the plants to keep cropping.

Your Local Experienced Locksmith (est 2000)

Experienced local locksmith service

Spring Motoring Winter driving is well behind us, but spring brings its hazards too. Iain Betson offers these driving tips to get you safely to summer. 1. Run your AC at least once a week, even in winter. Remember, you don’t have to turn it down to a chill level that a penguin would love; just make sure all is working OK. So it will work when you really need it. 2. Check the fluid levels and, perhaps while you’re at it, give the bodywork a good wash too. Get all the salt deposits off from the wheel arches and underneath. 3. In these months the sun is still quite low in the sky but the glare will be getting stronger. Don’t just rely on the sun-visor; take a pair of sunglasses with you. 4. April showers will lift all the rubber and other muck out of the tarmac, causing the road surface to be slippery for a time – extra care will be needed when cornering or braking. 5. In springtime, we all like to get out pursuing our pastimes after the dark winter months. For many, this will mean using the roads, but not as motorists. Be aware of extra walkers, joggers, cyclists, horses and riders 6. Winter takes its toll on road surfaces and traffic makes a small pothole bigger. It doesn’t just make for a bumpy ride; hitting a pothole can throw the steering out of alignment and, if you have alloy wheels, crack the spokes. Do your best to avoid potholes, but not at the expense of swerving dangerously to avoid them.

TECHNOLOGY

The Best Car Gadgets For 2015 We’ve come a long way from the days when the most interesting accessory you could get for your car was a set of fluffy dice. There are all kinds of useful accessories for in-car entertainment, navigation and safety, and you can even get gadgets that can help you hang on to your driving licence.

about damage occurring when you’re parked, such as people shunting you in a supermarket and fleeing the scene while you’re still shopping, look for one with a Park Mode to catch the culprits.

If you’ve ever worried that you might be over the drink driving limit (which has just been lowered in Scotland), a portable breathalyser is a good investment. The well regarded Alcosense range starts at £25 and rises to £60 for the Elite model, which knows about the lower limits in Scotland, Ireland and much of Europe. If that’s too pricey Alcosense makes disposable tubes at £4.99 for two.

If entertainment is your thing you’ll be spoilt for choice. You can pick up an in-car DVD player for £70 or a twin pack for £120, or you could invest in a cheap Android tablet and let the kids watch movies on that: headrest holders are widely available.

Garmin’s £120 Dash Cam 10HD also has safety on its mind. It is a video camera that sits on your windscreen and continually records what’s in front of you, eliminating any doubt about who’s to blame in the event of an accident. The camera uses microSD memory cards and it does everything automatically so you don’t even need to remember to turn it on. If you’re worried 16

Pioneer CarPlay Stereo

If your car stereo is showing its age, you can replace it with an all-singing, all-dancing model for as little as £43, although if you want the ultimate in audio you’ll pay a bit more than that: for example, Pioneer’s SPHDA120 car stereo, which uses Apple’s CarPlay technology to work with an iPhone, is currently £339. You don’t need to spend that much for a smartphone connection, though: there is a wide range of good quality car stereos for around £50 to £70 with connections for smartphones and/or USB flash drives. If you’d rather go wireless, gadgets can help with that

too. Parrot’s MKi9200 adds Bluetooth wireless technology to your existing car stereo, enabling you to stream music (or audiobooks, or podcasts) from your phone. It also adds hands-free calling and voice control, meaning you can navigate your music library without taking your eyes off the road. It’s currently £139.99, and (optional) installation is around £50. One of the most useful in-car gadgets may be EE’s Buzzard 2, which provides a Wi-Fi hotspot in your car via the magic of 4G mobile broadband. That’s brilliant if you tend to have a carful of smartphone or tablet-wielding children, or if you need to get online with your laptop when you’re out and about. You can pick one up for free if you sign up for a two-year, £10 per month contract, but keep an eye on the data limits: that £10 gets you 1GB of data transfer per month, so it’s not a great idea to let the kids stream endless Netflix programs when you’re on the road.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Justin Friel feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving

people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Romsey & North Baddesley area and Justin is finding that his

approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve

done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Justin a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Thinking of Outsourcing Your Payroll? A Payroll Bureau takes care of all payroll requirements for a number of businesses rather than the job being done in-house. A bureau will service any requirement from a company with one employee paid on a

monthly basis to companies with a weekly payroll for many employees. Processing includes inputting of all data including starters, leavers, P45s, SSP, SMP, SPP, P60sholiday pay etc. They also produce required reports including PAYE payments due, payroll journals to name a few as well as taking care of Year End. There are many reasons why switching to a Payroll Bureau is a good idea; saving on software costs, staff training/ recruitment, having cover for sickness or holidays, holding sensitive payroll data off site, reports to suit your needs and Auto Enrolment pension administration services.

HOME COMPUTER HELP We come to you! Low Cost • Laptops/PCs Repairs • No Jargon Virus/Spyware • Tuition On-Site • Local • Friendly Free Home Callout

Just one of our many happy customers on Checkatrade “This is the second time I have used Will. First class service again, helped me understand the laptop and installed printer and antivirus.”

With increasingly complex compliance legislation and amendments, such as the new holiday regulations and auto enrolment, could your company afford ‘late payment’ charges if you forget to file a return on time? Unfortunately negligence is not an option! Poppie Consultancy offers a professional and friendly service, giving its clients peace of mind knowing that payroll requirements are being met leaving them to focus on more of the important day to day business issues. For further details and/ or a free quote, please feel free to call Denise on 07774849116 or visit website ww.poppieconsultancy.co.uk

TRAVEL

10 Highlights of a Holiday in Croatia Relax on the beach

View from Rozac

apartment balcon

y

Just a week or two in the unspoilt Dalmatian Coast gives you a taste of what Croatia has to offer; history, sun, sea and lots to do. If you haven’t booked your summer holiday yet here’s ten tempting reasons to choose Croatia this year.

1 Historical town of Trogir;

Wind your way round the narrow, cobbled streets, wine and dine under the palms of the “riva” in view of the super yachts berthed nearby.

2 3

Hire a speedboat for the day.

Swim in the falls of the Krk National Park.

4

Visit Split by boat from Trogir. Walk amongst the Diocletian’s Palace, set within the centre of Split itself

5 Okrug Gornji beach, Ciovo.

Be served drinks while you soak up the sun.

6 From dolphin watching to

spearfishing, bike tours and island hops to Hvar; excursions all start from Trogir so take your pick.

Krk Falls

34

7 Laganini Beach Club... heaven.

8

A day trip to Mostar, Bosnia & Herzegovina.

9

Ride the Cetina River in many ways; by raft, canoe, kayak, abseil or just in a wetsuit and drift downstream.

10 Relax by the pool at

Rozac, a luxury 3 bedroom apartment with two balconies, air conditioning and private pool. Located in the heart of Ciovo island, walking distance to Trogir and five minutes stroll to the beach. When’s the best time to go? Peak season is July and August so it’s bustling and weather is beautifully hot. June and September is quieter and a little cooler.

Some excursions might not operate in May and past 15 September. What’s the currency? Kuna and good value for money at current exchange rates. Do they drive on the left or right? On the right but with the network of water buses and boats you don’t need to hire a car. Rozac apartment is available for rent from May to September. Low cost flights from Gatwick and Heathrow to Split. Call Melanie Tinson on 023 8027 6396 or 07900 307636 for availability and costs. Prices from £450 per week.

And Another Thing... by Tom Hughes Where to take my beloved for a much needed break? Tenerife for some early sun? Or how about springtime in Paris? Or maybe somewhere nearer home....? “Southport? In March? But Tom, I thought we were going to Paris?” “Did you know Southport’s Lord Street is the inspiration for the boulevards of most romantic city in the world?” “Oh, for a horrible minute I thought you meant we were going to -” “Southport, that’s right. We can take Olly on the beach. Go for a stroll along Southport Pier?” “You know how to spoil a girl, don’t you?” “Come on, grab your coat, better take an extra layer, best take an umbrella too.” “Anything else?” “A flask of Bovril? Oh and a woolly hat.” In no time at all the Mondeo Ghia was within striking distance of the classiest seaside town north of Liverpool (and south of Blackpool). I parked up on the coast road and after leaping acrobatically to catch my airborne umbrella, shouted over to Sarah. “Have you got any change for the machine?” “What!? The wind, I can’t-” She shook her head, no change. No matter we could pay via mobile phone. Thirty minutes later I was 40

in the newsagents changing a five pound note. “You can pay by mobile mate.” “Unfortunately I failed my computer programming A-level, so can I have five pound coins please?” At last, we were ready to explore. “So you see, the design of this street, with its wide thoroughfare, is just like the boulevards of Paris. It is said that Napoleon III lodged just off Lord Street, in 1834 I believe, and that gave him the idea-” “Tom, as fascinating as this is, can we just get out of the rain?” “Here let’s go down this side alley and get our fortune told.” “I’ll tell you what Tom, you go and get your fortune told, I’m going into Russell & Bromleys.” Refusing to be dissuaded, I popped my head through the beads hanging across the door and sat down in Madame Sylvia’s bijou front parlour, with Olly sat quietly on my knee. She took my hand in hers which was of course the signal for me to start giggling. “I would say that you are quite a happy-go-lucky person. Always smiling.” “Well fancy you knowing that?” I beamed. “Now, you haven’t got a younger brother have you?” “No.” “Older sister?”

“No. I have a younger sister and an older brother.” “Yes I thought so.” Well done Madame Sylvia, right on the money again! Leaving Madame Sylvia’s armed with the knowledge that my fortune was on its way, I met Sarah coming out of the shoe shop. Eventually, we battled our way across the coast road and found our way to Southport Pier. “Tom look at it, it’s sheeting down.” “It’s OK darling worry not, we can take the train.” And there, coming into the tiny station on the shortest bit of track known to man, was a real live proper train. “Is this the right train for the end of Southport Pier?” The exhausted driver looked at me like he hadn’t heard that joke for hours. “Ninety pence please.” At the other end of this pile of Victorian Iron we discovered a seedy amusement arcade and tatty cafe which had been refurbished completely and replaced with, er, a tatty cafe and seedy amusement arcade. We decided to sit out the storm with a restorative cuppa. Unfortunately, a stroppy little man in a hi-viz jacket and moustache barred our way. “Sorry sir, no dogs in the cafe.” We all looked down at Olly, now

soaked and shivering with the cold. “It’s OK, he’s a guide dog.” The little Jobsworth’s eyes narrowed. “Well where’s his harness and tunic?” “It’s his day off.” “His day off?” “Yes. Do you wear that tunic on your day off?” “Er, no.” “Well neither does he, now excuse us.” After our greasy Eccles cake and stewed tea we decided to head home. I made a dash for the train but it had already gone. “Blast! What time is the next one?” “I’m not sure but I think I can see it now, you know that one there, at other end of this pier?” We returned to our Mondeo Ghia only to find a nice shiny yellow parking ticket stuck onto the windscreen. “I thought you bought one?” “I thought you paid by mobile?” And the moral of this story? When a fortune teller says it’s your lucky day to go and buy a ticket, always follow her advice.

HOBBIES

The Buzz of Helping Our Natural Environment by Jacob Thorson The buzzing of a honeybee is a familiar, timeless sound that we immediately associate with summer, but sadly 20 bee species are already extinct and time may be running out for some of the remaining 267 species in the UK. This is because changes in farming practices over the years have led to the disappearance of many wild flowers from their natural habitat and this environmental emergency may be one of the reasons why beekeeping has enjoyed a revival. While the UK has its share of commercial bee farms, most beekeepers are dedicated amateurs. There are three main types of bee – bumblebees, honey bees and solitary bees, but it is the honey bee that beekeepers commonly look after in an ‘apiary’ (the name for a place where bees are kept). There are several different strains of honey bee, some of which are more docile – and therefore 48

For the hive it is all about location, location, location!

easier to manage – than others. If you are thinking of starting up as a beekeeper the first consideration should be the location of the hive. Do you have a garden or piece of land nearby where you can easily feed and maintain your bees? Can you place it in a location away from wind and in full or partial sun? Is the presence of the hive likely to disturb your neighbours? Even if the bees pose no direct harm to others, you should bear in mind that their presence may still cause anxiety to people living nearby. Beekeeping is a form of livestock management and looking after an apiary can at times be demanding and heavy work. It’s advisable to consider taking a recognised course such as those offered by the British Beekeepers’ Association (http://www.bbka. org.uk). The Association has branches all over the country, offering introductory sessions designed to tell you everything you need to know about setting up an apiary as well as hands-on contact with a hive. A hive is a miracle of organisation, where bees take on different roles to support their community. Worker bees forage for food, build the honey comb, feed the larvae, keep the nest clean and defend it from

predators, while queen bees mate with drones, producing up to 1,000 eggs per day to form new colonies. It’s important to feel confident about handling bees before you proceed to set up an apiary, as the initial costs can be quite high. The essential purchase is a hive, plus various components and accessories. You’ll need to start out with a five or six frame nucleus and gradually expand your colony as you become more experienced. You should always purchase bees from a reputable bee breeder: it’s better to buy queens that have been bred within the UK as imported queens may carry diseases. If you join your local beekeeping association you may be able to buy your bees locally from a fellow keeper. What you choose to do with the honey from your hive is, of course, up to you. One hive can produce up to 60lb (27kg) in a good season, however an average hive will offer a surplus of around 25lb (11kg). There are other products – such as beeswax and royal jelly – that can also be sold, which goes to show that beekeeping is not only a great hobby: it can be a great business, too!
