Hello and Welcome We often entertain our teenage children with stories of how life was when we grew up. Their favourite topic is tales of the world without computers and mobile phones, and of great amusement is the thought that the phone wouldn’t fit in your pocket. If you remember, because of the power they used, all mobile phones were fitted into cars. The first one I used which was truly mobile had a battery pack which was the size and weight of a large shoebox filled with lead. And the first laptop computer I was given by my employers wasn’t really portable…so heavy, it was at best ‘transportable’. So many people do say that it was a simpler world then, but having the ability to work from home, to stay in touch with friends and family, to buy online and have it delivered to my door and to find out almost anything I want to instantly is fantastic. One of the other things I love about the internet is that we can have a team of people working on the magazines and it doesn’t matter where they live. Our designer Heather is in Scotland, our
administrator Lauren lives in Kent and Marina, our short story illustrator, lives in Serbia. Still there is a limit. We all still need local tradespeople, gardeners, hairdressers, garages and – of course – someone to fix our computers when they go wrong. And that’s what this magazine is all about. A choice of services in one handy guide and two pages this month of events, for the days when you feel like interacting with the real world rather than just the virtual one! Tania PS: Following on from my article in your last magazine, I have added more updates to my weight loss blog at www.discoveryourtoes.co.uk. Town Planning By Ted Bruning Come April, the start of the new financial year, and everything goes up. Including, in many towns across the country, the price of parking. Well, you may say, these are hard times and local councils have to fund their activities somehow. But the cost of town-centre parking is more than just a nuisance: it’s slow poison for high street retailers whether they’re independent or branches of national chains. Town-centre planning is an incredibly abstruse art with an infinite number of variables and nobody, not even the professionals, really knows what works and what doesn’t. A new supermarket in a Hampshire high street – was it responsible for killing off the independent traders, or did it increase footfall and keep them on life-support, allowing them to absorb high rents for a few years longer? A new Waitrose in a Cambridgeshire town centre: yes, the butcher and the greengrocer couldn’t compete, but on the other hand an independent wine merchant set up shop directly opposite because Waitrose people are his people too, and as a specialist he feels he can do the job better. These two examples give just a hint of the complexities involved. But there’s one constant that separates all high street retailers whether chain or independent from all out-of-town retailers: free parking. And it’s not just Tesco and B&Q that have moved out of town centres and settled in car parks the size of small farms: why are franchises like Fired Earth and Cotton Traders generally sited in garden centres and farmyard malls? Plenty of free parking! A case in point: Beers of Europe is located in an old grainstore down a track outside King’s Lynn. It has unlimited parking. Shoppers can, and do, fill the boots of their cars with beer, and Beers of Europe is
6
thriving. But town-centre beer shops in Bury St Edmunds and Lincoln went under because the most a customer could physically carry away was five or six bottles. And it’s worth remarking that nearly all of the spectacular retail collapses of recent years – Woolworth’s, HMV, Clinton Cards – were primarily high street operators. Campaigns to ‘shop local’ are commonplace, but convenience is the order of the day. If in-town parking has limited availability and means shoppers must carry loose change, and may have to cut their shopping trip short for fear of a hefty fine, they will vote with their tyres and head straight to the big free car parks. Persuading local councillors who need income that providing plentiful free parking is in their interest is a very hard sell. But a high street populated with charity shops isn’t good for the council either. Charity shops don’t pay business rates and they rely on volunteers: they don’t hire unemployed people whose housing benefit is funded by the council. Surely carting all the unpopular and inconvenient pay-and-display meters off to the scrapyard is a measure that would encourage local shopping. The trouble is that so many town-centre independents have already gone to the wall that their political voice is very feeble. Many towns no longer even have a chamber of trade. One answer to that would be to persuade the high street chains – Iceland, Boots, M&S Food, Costa etc – to permit and indeed encourage their store managers to get involved. A chamber of trade that represented more than just the last independent optician and the last independent jeweller would be an energetic and influential lobby group that local councils would have to listen to.

Don’t lose those precious memories It used to be that the data held on our computers was fairly unimportant. If a disaster occurred and our hard disk failed or was wiped out by a virus, then we normally had a ‘hard copy’ or could re-create our address book and it didn’t matter that much. Today though things are very different and the majority of us have a great deal more to lose should the worst happen and our letters, photos, e-mails and music library were to disappear. It is often the case that our data is more valuable than the hardware it resides upon – we can purchase a new laptop or desktop computer for a few hundred pounds but our data (particularly for businesses) and memories are quite simply priceless. Although we will probably never be 100% secure against data loss, we can certainly minimise the risk by being disciplined enough to keep our files in well-ordered and maintained folders and by making sure that we back them up. Some people sign up for low cost or ‘free with your broadband’ data backup facilities. All well and good but did you know that many of these services offer limited recovery, with no ability to roll back to previous file versions if corruption or deletion occurs. Think about that for a moment – you might have been backing up your files online for months but then your computer and files get corrupted and the backup simply backs up the corruption for you. Online data backup is a good way to help
10
protect yourself but you need to choose the right kind of package to ensure maximum protection. CD’s and DVD’s have a limited life, USB sticks and external drives can fail as well. The answer is probably to spread the risk and maximise the chances of recovery by backing up and then backing up your backup! If you are worried about the implications of losing your data then why not talk to one of the Widenet team. We can’t give you a 100% guarantee that you will never lose another file again but we can give you impartial and practical advice to at least reduce the risk. If the worst comes to the worst though, we would send your failed drive away to our specialist partners who can retrieve a lot of the data by disassembling the drive. But prevention is a lot less expensive than cure and a little bit of safeguarding could save a lot of worry and heartache. By Widenet Computer Services Ltd

Big Ben cast at Whitechapel Foundry, London
What could be more British than Big Ben? You hear the bong of the 13-ton bell every time you watch ITN’s evening news or listen to the 6pm and midnight news on Radio 4. And even if you very sensibly try to avoid the news you’ll have heard the Westminster Chimes – played on the four quarter-bells that live with Big Ben in the Elizabeth Tower at the Houses of Parliament – probably more than any other piece of music. Distantly descended from a tune in Handel’s Messiah, they’re in alarm clocks, doorbells, ice cream vans, possibly even ringtones wherever you go. When you finally arrive at the Pearly Gates and ring for admission, you’ll probably hear them then. But there’s more to Big Ben’s Britishness than mere ubiquity. Because there’s nothing more British than a right old foul-up, and Big Ben started its career with not one foul-up but two. One night in October 1834 the Houses of Parliament were burnt to the ground. Next day some fool decided to rebuild them and – shazzam! – a mere 24 years later they were rebuilt. The project was masterminded by Sir Charles Barry but the design of the Great Tower (only re-named last year to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee) was assigned to the great Gothic revivalist Augustus Pugin. Looks like stone, doesn’t it? Looks can be deceiving, though – the shaft of the tower is brick, and the bell chamber and spire are cast iron. The stone is only cladding, like Jack and Vera’s house in Coronation Street. Naturally a great bell had been commissioned. The 16-ton monster was cast in a foundry in Stockton-on-Tees and named after Sir Benjamin Hall, the worthy who supervised the rebuilding. In 1856, before the Great Tower had been topped out, Big Ben was hung up in New Palace Yard and tested. It promptly broke. Whoops! Just time to order a new one, from the Whitechapel Foundry just across the City. Smaller this time, at a mere 13 tons; but still called Big Ben.
12
It was cast on 10 April 1858 and took 18 hours to haul the 200 feet up to the bell chamber to be tested. And guess what? Yes – it broke too. The clapper, it turned out, was twice the recommended weight. It took three years to repair and, apart from 1916-18 when people thought Zeppelins might hear it, it’s been bonging almost uninterrupted ever since. It didn’t even stop during the blitz, when the Luftwaffe totalled the chamber of the House of Commons but spared the Great Tower. The Britishness doesn’t stop there, though. The design of the clock itself, a prestige project if ever there was one, was entrusted to a couple of amateurs. Edmund Denison was actually a lawyer, while George Airey was the Astronomer Royal. Theirs was a completely new and quite revolutionary design, which I’d explain to you if I understood it; but it was such a good one that the clock is accurate to a second a day and is regulated by a pile of pre-decimal pennies – adding a penny advances the clock by 0.4 of a second a day. The movement, being more than 150 years old, has been a wee bit stop-start since the 1970s, but Big Ben itself, complete with the original crack, bongs on. It did chime 30 once – but that was deliberate, to announce last year’s opening of the 30th Olympiad. Either an inspired departure from convention or a shallow piece of political gimmickry, depending on your persuasion; but at least nothing broke this time. DISCOVER SHORT STORY
Short Story The Easter Egg Hunt Valerie waved as her daughter’s car pulled off the drive, leaving her with two pink overnight bags and a list of instructions which she knew she would ignore. In the lounge her granddaughters were pulling cushions off the sofa in search of the remote control. “Margot, Bonny”, she called, “Mummy said no TV”. The girls drooped visibly. “Well, maybe later, but first”, she clapped her hands, “how about an Easter egg hunt?” No chocolate had been second on the list. The girls excitedly pulled on their coats. “Here’s a basket each”. She opened the back door. “Let’s see what we can find”. Les, Valerie’s neighbour, appeared at the fence wearing a monocle and a fez. “Hello Uncle Les”, Margot called. “Like your funny glasses”. “I have a wobbly tooth”, Bonny added. “Excellent.” Les replied. “Enjoy the hunt”. The girls had keen eyes and soon found all the chocolate eggs hidden in the flower beds. “Look Grandma”, Margot called from the vegetable patch. Valerie was just as amazed as her granddaughters to see a giant bean stalk. It was eight feet tall and made out of papier-mâché. “I wonder how that got there?” Valerie asked. “This must be where Jack planted his magic beans”, Margot said with authority. “Look!” Bonny pointed under the rhubarb leaves. “A golden egg.” “The giant’s goose laid it”, Margot announced as the girls rolled the egg onto the path. Something else glinted in the soil. The girls knelt down and began to dig, unearthing a pile of golden chocolate coins. “The giant’s treasure”, Margot whispered. The girls hurriedly filled their baskets, concerned that the giant might make an appearance. “Can we go inside and eat our chocolate Grandma?” The girls chimed together. “Pretty please?” “Of course”, Valerie laughed. “Make sure you wipe the soil off first”. “Thanks Grandma”. Bonny popped a coin into
16
Valerie’s pocket and dashed after Margot into the house. In the kitchen Valerie switched the kettle on. Summoned by the sound like a genie in a lamp, Les appeared at the back door. “East egg hunt was a success I take it?” he asked, settling himself down at the kitchen table and removing his fez. “Thanks to you”, Valerie smiled. “You’re welcome darling”. Les made a bow. “Those props from the pantomime were just gathering dust in my shed. I thought they might spice things up”. Valerie put two mugs of coffee on the table. “They certainly did. Your beanstalk, golden egg and coins mixed with a child’s imagination; what could be better?” Les’s monocle popped out. “I didn’t plant any coins”. They exchanged quizzical glances and Valerie fished the coin out of her pocket. Les wiped the soil from it. “My dear”, he held it up to the light. “This is a real gold coin, possibly Roman”. Valerie took the coin. It was heavy and gleamed as though it had been minted yesterday. “How many did the girls find?” Les asked. “I don’t know”, Valerie said feeling excited. “A dozen?” “And where are they now?” A sharp cry of pain shook the walls and made Valerie and Les jump. They searched for the girls and found them behind the sofa with their baskets. Margot had her arm around Bonny who had tears rolling down her cheeks. In her palm Bonny held something tiny and white. “She couldn’t get the foil off the coin so she bit it”, Margot explained calmly. “And now her wobbly tooth’s fallen out”. “Do you think the tooth fairy will come to your house Grandma?” Bonny sobbed. “My dear”, Les exclaimed. “I’d say she’s already been”. "It's magic" says Harry Potter actor
Michael Henbury - Britain’s smallest man and actor as Ewok in Star Wars has at last with the help of Hampshire Hearing broken through his own sound barrier. At the age of 51 Michael found he was not hearing as well as he needed to and searched for a solution from his Doctor and after a year of treatment was eventually offered an operation to help his hearing loss. Not wanting to go down the surgical route, Michael sought advice from Gary Whettingsteel at the Hampshire Hearing Centre “they were incredibly helpful and it was fantastic to talk to people who understood the challenges I was living with”. Gary immediately lent Michael a hearing aid whilst he sought the best solution for him – when Gary turned the hearing aid on " it was a revelation" said Michael "I had not heard this well for years - if ever" and realised how much I was missing out Gary contacted Starkey UK Ltd the manufacturers of the World’s smallest hearing aids for their expertise in such rare fittings. Hearing of Michaels plight Starkey arranged for a pair of their new "Soundlens" hearing aids the world’s first invisible-in-the-canal hearing instrument to be made. Michael was indeed a challenge because of the size of his ear canals but if anyone could help then " I knew it would be Starkey" said Gary. Michael had recently been in a Harry Potter production and Starkey have certainly worked big the of star a Michael is UK. there magic for screen....... smallest man in the him.

If you want to hear out of this world like Micha el then visit the Hampshire Hearing Centre in Chandlers Ford for an unbeatable experience .
Michael has now been wearing a pair of the latest Starkey hearing aids for a year and is over the moon with the results. He says "thanks to the Hampshire Hearing Centre I can now live my life normally and continue my career without having to worry about not being able to hear properly" he continues – “it’s like they were designed especially for me” Above everything else Michael has said it’s his quality of life that has improved the most: “Without the hearing aids my life would be so different”.

DISCOVER MOTORING
Porsche Cayenne GTS You want a 911, but need more space and would rather have the commanding view of the road a 4x4 offers. Is the Porsche Cayenne the answer? We find out… What is it?
It’s a Cayenne – Porsche’s roughty toughty off-roader – but one that’s had a dose of steroids and some glitter liberally applied to its bodywork. Slotting into the range between the V8 S and the Turbo, the GTS comes with more focus and power and some distinctive styling options.
What’s under the bonnet?
A rather raucous 4.8-litre V8 that’s been uprated from 394bhp to 414bhp and boasts 515Nm of torque. Performance is far from the Turbo’s though; the GTS will hit 60mph in 5.7s and go on to 162mph. It sounds pretty special getting there though! Everything else has been on the sharpening block – the steering is crisper, the eight-speed gearbox shifts quicker, and the lowered ride height gives it an added edge on the road.
What’s the kit like?
Is it any good?
Although it’s incredibly quick and sounds tremendous, it can feel a little bit stressed out at times. By that we mean it feels on edge, twitchy even – perhaps the added sharpness has given it a little too much bite. However, there’s no doubting it has real presence on the road – it’s just the styling might not suit all tastes.
The verdict
We like the GTS treatment given to most Porsches. The 997 911 really benefitted from the work over, and the Panamera GTS we tried after this Cayenne worked fantastically well too. However, the off-roader doesn’t feel quite right in this guise. It’s quick and sounds incredible, but feels like it’s pretending to be something that it’s not.
The Knowledge
Pretty impressive, but like all Porsches you’ll soon rack up Ford Fiesta-sized bills on the options. A communications pack costs £2,157, 21-inch black alloys are £1,513 and even the red paint will set you back £1,619. Our test car had a total of £13,760 worth of goodies…ouch.
Model: Porsche Cayenne GTS
Any rivals?
Max speed: 162mph
The ageing Range Rover Sport puts up a pretty good fight, but we’ve never tried a Rangie that sounds as good as this GTS. Audi will soon be at the party with its SQ models, but that’s yet to be applied to its Q7. For a left field there’s always the Infiniti Vettel Edition, but that’s very expensive in comparison. So, not much choice out there at the moment.

Rescue Your Lawn
This will increase the resistance to fungal diseases and with a regular program of feeding turn your lawn into a healthy green sward also tolerant in longer dry spells. If you haven’t done your first cut, keep the blades high until the weather warms up and then reduce the height of cut accordingly.
The arrival of March means that – at last – spring is just around the corner. With a long grey and very wet winter behind us (hopefully!) it’s time to survey the effects of those months on our garden. As the lawn is the biggest feature in our gardens, it is this area that is likely to need the most immediate work to make it into the longed for ‘bowling green’. Green Keeper have had over 13 years of bringing their client’s lawns back to their summer glory and business owner Rob Wiffen tells us:
At Green Keeper Lawns we use the very best professional products and encourage the use of organic alternatives. We have a wide range of fertilisers and treatments available. Our existing customers are delighted with the way their lawns have been transformed over a relatively short time. We tailor a treatment program specific to a lawn’s individual requirement and monitor it throughout the seasons. This reduces the long term impact on your pocket and by using organic alternatives also the environment.
“Your lawns will benefit from a scarification, hollow tine aeration and good quality top dressing. Top dressing while the grass is actively growing will help increase the microbial and bacteria content of your lawn.
Please call us for tips and advice or visit our website www. greenkeeperlawns.co.uk. Professional lawn care is cheaper than doing it yourself so give us an opportunity to do a free lawn analysis.”

DIS COV ER LO C AL WALK
Horsebridge & Kings Somborne Walk Walk Distance 4.7 miles A downloadable pdf of the walk and enlarged map is availabe at www.discovercommunity.co.uk
Historical Notes Horsebridge is situated on the old ‘Sprat & Winkle’ railway line that ran from Andover to Kimbridge junction in the south. Royal Assent was granted in July 1858 for the line to be built by converting a canal built earlier in 1792. The route was to run parallel to the rivers Test and Anton. A 14-gun salute celebrated the cutting of the first sod by Lord Palmerston in a field near his home at Broadlands, Romsey. The line opened to traffic in 1865 but was not a commercial success, closing in 1964. The name Kings Somborne is probably derived from Saxon times in that the area was a ‘kings’ possession. Somborne relates to a stream associated with pigs. Remains of large stone buildings to the south of the churchyard are presumed to be the remains of a Saxon royal palace. The Doomsday book records the village as Somborne Regis. • Horsebridge is situated just a short distance away from the main A3057 Romsey to Stockbridge road South West of Kings Somborne. On entering the hamlet, park on the grass verge at opposite the junction with the Broughton road, by the John O’Gaunt pub (SO20 6PU). Alternatively, turn into the Broughton Road and turn left opposite the pub onto a gravel track leading to the ‘Test Way’ public car park.. • Walk along the road in the direction of Romsey. Follow the road as it bends around a large barn on your left and at the end of the barn turn left onto a signed bridleway. • Climb slowly uphill along the boundary between two fields. At the top of the rise, pass to the right of a farm gate and emerge onto the main A3057 road. • Cross the road diagonally left onto a lay-by. At the left hand side of a metal farm gate join a
30
footpath running parallel to the main road. • Continue straight ahead following the left hand fence-line heading towards Kings Somborne. • Emerge into Palace Close and walk along the road straight ahead to a ‘T’ junction. • Turn left along the road then walk through a cut-way into a close. Follow the road left to another ‘T’ junction. • Turn right then left onto Furzedown Road. Walk down this road then turn right along the road signposted to the Sombornes. • With Nutchers Drove opposite, cross the footbridge over a stream and turn left back towards the main A3057. • As you near the main road, turn right to reach the main road. Cross the road and into Cow Drove Hill road. • Walk uphill to a bungalow on your right named ‘Sunrise’. Turn left up some wooden steps onto the signed Clarendon Way. • Turn right and walk uphill following the field right-hand boundary. Near the top of the hill, emerge onto a metalled lane and turn left. • Walk along the lane ignoring the path joining from your left. As the lane bears right, continue straight ahead along a tarmac and gravel track. • At a crossing of tracks, continue straight ahead along a signed ‘Private Road’. • Continue along the track as it passes through water meadows and over the various branches of the River Test. Walk to the left of a metal gate to emerge onto a road. • Turn left and walk along the roadside verge ignoring the Clarendon Way turning on your right. • Walk past Faithfulls Drove on your right to a ‘T’ junction. Turn right onto the Dunbridge road. Continue along the road past the Broughton turning on your right.

• Pass the shared entrance drive to Bossington Estate and its attendant lodge house on your left and the entrance lane to St James’ Church. • As you reach some farm cottages on your right, turn left onto a signed track crossing the road and walk between two fields. Continue along the remains of this Roman Road that at onetime ran from Sarum to Winchester. • Continue along this path as it crosses over the various branches of the river once more. At a stile, cross into a field. • The path here is indistinct, but walk straight across the centre of the field bearing slightly diagonally left towards a hedgerow. Cross a stile to join the track bed of the redundant railway. • Turn left and pass Horsebridge station to your right. At a fork in the path, bear left to continue along the track bed passing once more over the river. • On joining the road, turn right to rejoin your car.
Thanks to local resident Mrs J Brace for this walk. We were pleased to donate to her requested charity for this feature. If you have anything you’d like to contribute you could raise money for your charity of choice too. Send to tania@discovermagazines.co.uk.
