When you work from home, as the Discover team do, the lines Melanie Tinson & Tania Houston between work time and leisure time can easily blur. Mel and I both have two children each, all about to go back to university and all able to drive when they are at home. So those days of being on call and having a set time to stop are behind us. But as the saying goes ‘all work and no play…’, and rather than being prompted to stop work by an interruption, a plan is needed to pull us away from the desk. First in my plan is getting a ‘habit’ – e.g. going for a walk on Monday evenings, doing a quiz night once a month; secondly being disciplined about ensuring that the diary is booked well ahead with interesting events to go to. On the regular activities, September is a great month to start. With most holidays well behind us it should be easy to make a regular commitment. Colleges start their evening courses, local groups see their new membership increase, and it’s still mild enough for a month or so to start an outside exercise. On the diary planning, our editorial coordinator Izzy puts a big effort into our what’s on pages and she is approached regularly to include community events, and much of what we include is free or very low cost. So have a look through the mag if you are looking for something to do, and if you have any ideas or run events yourself, contact Izzy on editorial@discovermagazines.co.uk. Until next time.

INTERVIEW
John
Newman John Newman is one of the big break through names of the last couple of years. With record sales into the millions and a handful of Brit Awards nominations, Newman is back with a new single ‘Come And Get It’ and an upcoming studio album. Lucy Ambache caught up with him on the Evening Breeze.
My kids love your music - we’re always singing to it out loud in the car. Do you get a lot of people saying that? Yeah and I always intend it to be a bit that way - I always want big choruses so people can sing the lyrics. You’ve got fans that are 2 and 4 years old in my house! I love that. I get that a lot actually. I like to study my audience before they come in and it’s amazing to see the eclectic age range. It means that my records are going out to anyone who appreciates it and likes it. The new single ‘Come And Get It’. Where did you write it? I wrote it in Los Angeles, where I wrote most of the record this time. I was there for six or seven months and it was incredible. I wanted to make a record that felt good in the sun in your car.
So the people who are name dropping. Are they the big names? No. It’s the flock of sheep that are running around searching for those people. And you realise “where are all the successful people who’ve done very well with their lives” are working hard and being successful! You’re a Yorkshire boy. Did you enjoy growing up there? It was alright. To the age of sixteen, it’s all well and good running around and making bonfires and building dens. That’s fun right? That’s the great bit! Until you get to sixteen when you’re a bit like “I’ll be judged if I carry on doing that” and then every day becomes a cycle. So it’s quite nice to break away and do something different.
What was it like living in LA?
I’m going to get out of here and be famous guys. I’m going to hit rock and roll. Just watch me!
It’s good if you take it with a pinch of salt.
Oh I’d never have the ego to say that.
Did you? Yes. I think it’s important to remember my stern northern mother! People would tell me how many celebrities they’d bumped into. Is it very ‘name droppy out there’? It’s SO name-droppy. Can you get away with not being like that? Yes. You just can’t get involved in it. 10

The Seasons Art Class Hampshire held its end of term exhibition at The Hilt, Chandlers Ford, on 21st May. The event was attended by students, visitors and guests from the Winchester, Southampton, Romsey, Itchen Valley and surrounding areas. The work on display included pencil drawings, oil pastel paintings covering a selection of different projects, watercolour landscapes and birds, and everything from abstract art to landscapes and trees in acrylic paint. The students produced all the exceptionally high standard of work on display which went from strength to strength as the course progressed. Some of the visitors were so impressed that they booked onto future drawing and painting classes with Seasons. All courses are designed to be fun for absolute beginners, who have never picked up a brush before, through to intermediate students. Courses are open to adults of all ages, and are geared to provide students all the help they require to develop their artistic skills. The curriculum is fun, comprehensive and interesting. Students are made to feel very welcome, with refreshments provided. The class is informal and fun, but is very much a teaching class, and the tutor goes through the techniques of each medium and project step by step. Take a look at some of the exhibition photos - these are all beginner students, look what they've achieved!! The next course starts on Thursday 10th September 2015 at The Hilt, Hiltingbury Road, Chandlers Ford. Do get in touch if you are interested, on 01962 676360.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Justin Friel feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving
people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Romsey & North Baddesley area and Justin is finding that his
approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve
done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Justin a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Right Side of the Road Taking your car on a holiday to Europe is a great way to avoid exorbitant airfares, hidden airport and airline costs and rip-off duty-free. And don’t get me started on airport crowds and stress. However, before setting off for the continent in your car, there are a number of boxes you should tick before you get behind the wheel. Here’s a very simple checklist… • Prepare the proper documents: Ensure all car documents are up to date, including the insurance papers and V5c ownership document. Take both parts of drivers’ licences for all appointed drivers. • Preparing the car for driving on the continent: Book an off-schedule MoT, it will throw up any mechanical or electrical
problems to be attended to. In many European countries, it is illegal to drive with a broken exterior light for instance. Packing a full replacement bulb kit is worthwhile, too. • Take an emergency warning triangle (two in Spain) and a hi-vis jacket (some countries require a vest for each passenger, too, so check before you go). If you are driving in France, breathalysers are still on the legal list of items that you are required to have in the car, but there is NO FINE for not having them. • British cars should wear a GB sticker on the back to identify their country of origin, OR have Europlates bearing the blue GB symbol. • Headlights: You will also need to adapt your headlights to avoid dazzling oncoming vehicles. You can buy conversion kits, or your main dealer may be able to adjust the beam. Drive safely, have a wonderful time and remember – never drive faster than your guardian angel can fly. GARDENING
Tropical Paradise by Pippa Greenwood www.pippagreenwood.com
Have you missed out on a summer holiday again this year, or do you still think longingly of that fabulous tropical trip you had a few years back?
This time of year, as the summer’s end is not too far away, is when so many of us wish for that exotic holiday we never quite had! So why not try to recreate that Typically Tropical Feel in your own garden instead? The temperatures may not be quite what they might be on a real exotic holiday, but it’ll certainly help to make your garden feel warmer and more appealing …..and you can be sure that it’ll last a lot longer than the classic two week long trip. A tropical oasis might be particularly well suited to an urban garden, where temperatures are often warmer and conditions more sheltered and protected, but even if your garden gets its fair share of frosts you can still make an impact using a mixture of tender and hardy plants all of which have that exotic feel to them. Plant closely or fill ‘gaps’ with temporary plantings of the less hardy tropical look plants and you will create that dense, lush looks which spells tropical paradise. Keep plants well watered and fed and they should be full of vigour too.
22
Lush, large leaves will always help to create a rainforest or exotic atmosphere and you could even grow a miniature banana called Musa ‘Basjoo’, which shows a good degree of hardiness. Ok, so it won’t yield a crop of bananas but it’ll provide a tropical look and a good deal of comment too. Indian shot plants, also known as the cannas are great and fast growing too. For very bold, colourfully striped foliage and screaming orange flowers try Canna ‘Tropicana’, or for a larger than life effect try the banana Ensetes ventricosum ‘Maurelii’ which grows very fast and has wonderfully rich purplegreen leaves. If you want more than just foliage (and who doesn’t?) then you might like the idea of some tropical effect flowers added in to the mix. If so, try the bulbous Eucomis bicolour with out-of-this world greenish yellow flowerheads which give it the common name of ‘pineapple plant’. Another favourite of mine is the Angel’s trumpet. These gorgeous looking plants may be very poisonous but the flowers of Brugmansia (previously known as Datura) as
angel’s trumpet is also known, take some beating – choose white, yellow or cream and enjoy their perfume and elegant good looks. Although not hardy if you grow it in a pot it can be kept in the garden during all but the worst weather and then brought out again once it has started to warm up the following spring. Don’t forget the vertical surfaces such as trellis, walls and fences as they too can be given a floral and foliage makeover. These may look boring now, but will look great when covered with passion flowers, ornamental vines or the pretty Cobea scandens commonly known as the cup and saucer plant. Then add to the ‘action’ using a few dramatic features whether living – perhaps a Trachycarpus
fortunei palm in open ground or a pot, or in the form of a sculpture or statue. It is well worth checking what is available in local garden centres and junk shops or maybe even the local council recycling centre. Even if you go to the garden centre, statues and garden ornaments are very variable in price and there are now many available which are much more affordable than you might think. Partially hidden with some lush foliage they help to add to the jungle like atmosphere you are creating.
ferns, phoenix palms, yuccas, cordylines, Rodgersia pinnata, Gunnera manicata, Rheum palmatum, cycads (again great in a pot), citrus (including lemons, calamondin orange and other fruiting varieties) which are not always reliably hardy but can be used throughout the summer and then overwintered in a suitable greenhouse, conservatory or window sill and bamboos (including the dramatic blackstemmed ‘nigra’, Filipendula rubra, Ligularia, gloriosa lily and Fatsia japonica).
It is always worth visiting local nurseries and garden centres for more ideas and to find your own personal favourite tropical-effect plants to add to the mix. There are plenty to choose from and other plants to consider could include : tree
So, you see, the potential is there to create a holiday paradise without having to leave home, brave delays at the airport, find a house or pet-sitter…..all you need now is a deck chair and maybe, just maybe a cocktail or two, delivered on a tray!

Spot Deer at Bolderwood Bolderwood is situated in the heart of the New Forest along the Ornamental Drive. Here you have a car park which is free of charge (although there is donation box) where you can park your car and go off and experience some of the great sites the New Forest has to offer. It is one of the best places to see the deer as there is a purpose built platform which overlooks a large meadow. The platform is just a short walk from the car park. The deer get fed every day throughout the months of April and September and it is here that you will find herds of fallow deer regularly gathering around as they wait for a Forestry Commission Ranger to come and feed them. If you are lucky and time it right you can watch them being fed from the viewing platform. The feeding takes place anytime (when a ranger is free) between 12.30 and 2.30pm.

Will Bellows launched his business in 2004. Initially it was just Will on his own, but when the business started to grow through repeat calls and word of mouth, he relaunched Will Bellows as Home Computer Help. Eleven years later he has six employees with two new technicians starting soon. In 2004 technology at home was in its infancy. Broadband had just started to be widely available and affordable; tablets and smartphones were unheard of. But it’s difficult to live without some sort of computer now and for those not online – or online but struggling – it can be really frustrating. For Will and his team, getting the elderly online for the first time is something they love doing. Hearing from happy customers when they are able to order home deliveries during winter and connecting with family members is a very satisfying part of the job. From new users to family networks and home businesses, Will and the team are here to help.

Music to Charity’s Ears The Hampshire Flute and Fife Picnic, organised by local flautist Carrie Hensel, brought together over 35 young flautists on 11th July in the rural setting of Wellow Primary School. The children played lots of different music, ranging from 'Yellow Bird' to 'Brian Boru's March' throughout the morning, both in smaller and larger flute ensembles. Everyone brought along a plate of food to share in the picnic feast, and the day was completed with a fantastic concert alongside the Hampshire Flute Choir. Thanks to Just Flutes for providing all the children with goody bags and to Liz Goodwin, the founder of charity Flutewise. The aim of the concert was to raise money and awareness for charities, Naomi House and Flutewise. Carrie Hensel said, "I am very happy to say that we managed to raise over £100 for the charities" For future flute days please see www.fluteday.co.uk

And Another Thing... by Tom Hughes
My Sunday morning began like any other. Settled into my favourite chair with my brew, a slice of freshly buttered toast and two episodes of Broadchurch on catch-up, I was just about to take my first sip of tea when in walked Sarah, closely followed by Hannah and Emily.
The three women in my life all stared at each other. Chocolate Eggs it seemed, were not the issue. Sarah pressed on.
Now, grab your coat and let’s go shopping! Err, on second thoughts, leave the coat, let’s just go.”
“We are gathered here today Tom to tell you that, well, you are a bit of a scruff.”
Sarah, wearing a benevolent, concerned expression on her face gently relieved me of my steaming mug, sat me down and said,
Next to pipe up was Hannah.
In the vast outlet clothes store I wandered aimlessly around, fingering the rails without a clue what I was doing. Eventually I held up a pair of jeans with the very pleasing price tag of £24.99.
“Tom, What we are about to say is said out of love and concern, nothing else.” Then I realised what was happening, it was a family intervention! But an intervention about what? Was my customary Friday night pint of mild down the Paraffin Lamp getting out of hand? Was my chocolate habit becoming a cause for concern? What could it be? I decided to confront the issue head on. “Listen, if anyone is wondering why all the cream eggs keep disappearing, I want you all to know that from now on I promise to share the value pack with everyone else.” A confused silence descended. 40
“A what?” “Yes Dad, look at that jumper, look at those jeans?”
“Sarah, what about these?”
“What’s wrong with them?”
Sarah examined my choice.
“Dad, who wears hiking socks, walking shoes and a snood to the gym?”
“You haven’t just grabbed the cheapest have you?”
“Yes Tom, the girls are embarrassed. Their friends are talking about you. You need a new wardrobe, urgently”, said Sarah.
“Right put them back and go try on these.”
“Well ok, I’ll go through my stuff and - “ “Too late, we’ve done it for you.” Then Sarah, much to my dismay, produced a black bin liner full of my precious old clothes. Sweatshirts, jeans and - horror of horrors - my Bruce Springsteen 2005 tour t-shirt.
“Not at all.”
I examined the pair picked by Sarah. To my untrained eye, they looked identical to the jeans I’d just chosen. Identical that is, except for the price. Sarah’s were fifty pounds dearer. “Why would I pay seventy-five pounds for something I can get for-twenty five, I just don’t…”
“Not the Boss! Please?”
Grabbing the seat of the expensive jeans, Sarah pointed to a yellow logo stitched onto the rear pocket.
“No Tom, this lot is off to the charity shop in the precinct.
“Look! That’s why. They are designer.”

“So, they sew a little squiggle onto the pocket and they charge you treble the price? Are you being serious?” The look from Sarah told me that yes, she was indeed being deadly serious. She picked out another pair from the rack, handed both of them over and pointed in the direction of the changing rooms. I sloped away to the curtained-off area where a glumfaced child handed me an orange circle on which was printed a number two. I battled with the first pair for what seemed like an age. Eventually I gave up, deciding that in the words of my Auntie Joyce they “Wouldn’t go near me.” The second pair I actually managed to heave myself into. And a more uncomfortable pair of pants I couldn’t imagine. Baggy round the crotch and barely covering the posterior, I assumed that this particular “Designer” - in his hurry to stitch on the magic money squiggle, had stamped them with the wrong size. Outside, I informed Sarah of the manufacturer’s error. Sarah, shaking her head in defeat, flung back at me the cheap pair I had originally chosen. I tried them on right there in the store. Of course, they fitted perfectly. Eye rolls from Sarah, a triumphant beam from her husband. The next day Sarah arrived home from work to find me wearing the new jeans and another, different purchase. “Tom! What are you doing wearing that tatty old Bruce Springsteen T-shirt? I thought I gave that thing away?” “It’s very simple darling, yesterday afternoon, decided to go to the charity shop and do my bit for cancer research...”

RECIPE
Caramel Apple Sponge Bake This delicious moist sponge makes a perfect pudding for a special lunch. Serve warm or cold with ice cream or a spoonful of tangy crème fraiche.
Ingredients: • 100g granulated sugar • 4 tbsp cold water • 2 dessert apples, peeled, cored and thinly sliced • 200g self-raising flour • tsp baking powder • 1 tsp ground cinnamon • 200g caster sugar • 200g unsalted butter, softened • 3 large eggs, lightly beaten • 3-5 tbsp milk • Icing sugar, to dust • Scoops of vanilla ice cream and lemon balm sprigs, to serve
Makes 9 squares Ready in 1 hour 10 minutes
TIP
Replace the apple slices with peeled and sliced pears or try peeled and segmented oranges for a lovely citrus flavoured dessert. 42
1. Preheat the oven to 180C, fan 160C, Gas 4. Grease a 23cm square shallow cake tin and line the base and two sides with a baking paper.
2. Put the granulated sugar and water in a heavy-based saucepan and heat gently, stirring until the sugar has dissolved. Bring the syrup to the boil and continue boiling, without stirring, until the syrup has turned to a golden caramel.
3. Carefully pour the hot caramel into the base of the prepared tin. Arrange the apples slices over the caramel (don’t worry if the caramel has set).
4. Sift the flour, baking powder and cinnamon into a large bowl and add the caster sugar, butter and eggs. Using a hand-held electric whisk, beat the mixture for 2-3 minutes until smooth and creamy. Whisk in enough of the milk to give a soft dropping consistency.
5. Spoon the mixture over the apples and gently level the surface. Bake in the preheated oven for 35-45 minutes or until the sponge is golden and springy to the touch and a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean.
6. Leave the cake to cool in the tin for 10-15 minutes then carefully lift it out of the tin using the baking paper up the two sides of the tin. Cut into 9 squares and serve warm or cold, dusted with icing sugar. Top each square with scoop of ice cream and decorate with a sprig of lemon balm.

Barton Peveril Class of 75 Reunion WHEN three old school pals met for the first time since their sixth form days this photo brought back many memories and sparked plans for a class reunion - 40 years on. At the start in March the three knew of only six others from the Barton Peveril class of '75 but since then word of mouth, internet searches and the help of other enthusiasts have put the reunion organisers in touch with more than 100 of their college mates. The group’s locations range from Hampshire to as far afield as Australia and New Zealand and their list of occupations is almost
an A-Z of careers from accountant and business entrepreneur to writer and zoologist. The 'class of 75' started the sixth form in the year that Barton Peveril in Eastleigh became a sixth form college, and were the first graduates of the new system. It was previously a grammar school and half of this year group had attended since age 11. For the reunion on November 21, a return visit has been arranged to the college, now completely remodelled. The class of 75 will find that the 'New Block' has been replaced by the even newer

HOBBIES
Fishing: The Hobby That’s Just On The Tip Of Your Tongue! “Hook, line and sinker”, “Cold fish”, “something fishy”, “fishing for compliments”: the British language is peppered with colourful expressions that celebrate our traditional love of fishing. Catching fish with a rod and line may have been a matter of survival for our ancestors, but these days it’s simply regarded as an enjoyable hobby or sport.
By Kate McLelland
Angling generates a staggering £3.5 billion a year for the economy, employing 37,000 people across the UK. In a recent report the Angling Trust estimated that over the last two years four million people have gone fishing, and numbers are growing all the time. So if you’ve longed to try your hand at angling, here’s a quick guide to get you started:
What is angling? By definition “angling” is any kind of fishing that uses an “angle” or fish-hook. Over time this activity has evolved into three different types: coarse fishing, game fishing and sea fishing. “Game fishing” is limited to catching trout and salmon, while “Sea fishing” applies to any species of fish that lives in the sea. The term “Coarse fishing” is used for catching any freshwater fish apart from salmon or trout.
What’s it like to go fishing? Angling can be a hobby, a competitive sport or the focus of a relaxing holiday (87% of respondents in a recent survey said that their main reason for fishing was for “rest and relaxation”). While some anglers enjoy getting away from it all, others prefer to go fishing with friends, or chat to fellow fishermen. Angling can also be a gateway to learning about, and caring for, the environment. 46
What does it cost? Fishing can be expensive if you allow yourself to get carried away, buying expensive equipment and accessories. However it’s possible to start out on a relatively modest budget and upgrade over time. You can buy a basic coarse fishing kit, with nets, rods and accessories, for about £60.
What do I need? You will need a rod and reel, a line, hooks, bobbers, weights, pliers, a landing net, a small tackle box, a scale and tape measure and perhaps a few lures (unless you are going to use live or prepared baits at first).
Do I need permission to go fishing? Over the age of 12 you will need a licence to fish with a rod and line for salmon, trout, freshwater fish, smelt and eel in England (except the River Tweed), in Wales and the Border Esk region of Scotland. You can buy your rod licence at Post Offices: over the phone (telephone 0844 800 5386) or online. Licences can be arranged for short periods of time or for as long as a year. An annual licence currently costs £27 (or £72 if you want to fish for salmon and sea trout). If you are unsure about taking up fishing in the long term, you should probably choose a one day or an eight day licence. However, don’t be tempted to try
fishing without a licence: if you are caught, you may face a fine of up to £2,500.
When can I fish? The “close season” for fishing is between 15th March and 15th June each year and during that period you are not allowed to fish. The coarse fishing close season applies to all rivers, streams and drains in England and Wales but not most stillwaters (although there are exceptions). Some clubs and fisheries introduce their own close season rules, so check before you fish.
Where can I fish? There are thousands of rivers, streams, lakes, piers and waterways in urban and rural locations where you can gain some experience. You will find information online at www.rodand-line.co.uk and www.fish-uk. com or join the Environment Agency’s page on Facebook to
discover waterways that have recently been cleared for fishing. If you prefer to wait till the summer you can follow www. nationalfishingmonth.co.uk: a site created to encourage more people to go fishing. Either visit their website or phone (during office hours) on 0333 577 9970.
What do I do once I’ve caught a fish? The anglers’ website www.fish-uk. com states that anglers should always return a fish to the water after it has been caught. It recommends laying the fish on an unhooking mat and gently removing the hook (barbless hooks make removal much easier). Fish should be handled as little as possible or they will lose their protective, slimy coating. Never throw one back into the water: instead you should slowly immerse the net and let the fish swim away. Many anglers
like to measure their catches, weigh them or take photographs before putting them back. Anyone who has listened to anglers’ tales about “The one that got away” will know that patience and skill plays a large part in fishing and it may be helpful to learn from an experienced angler when you are starting out: a list of instructors is available at www.fish-uk.com. As an island nation, it’s hardly surprising that fishing has become embedded in our language and our culture. Angling is growing in popularity, so don’t be a fish out of water: it won’t be long before you are well and truly hooked!
