My mother was born during Melanie Tinson & Tania Houston wartime and for most of her life had a ‘make do and mend’ attitude. Recycling was second nature to her, not something she did to be green, and bargain hunting was practically a hobby, particularly in relation to Christmas. Every January she would buy up cut price Christmas cards and wrapping paper. Car boot sales were a great hunting ground for presents throughout the year and in autumn she’d buy gifts in the sales. I’m really not sure it worked though as by December she’d forgotten what she’d bought and where she’d hidden it and still seemed to be out shopping for even more. On Christmas morning itself, our unwrapping was supervised. We weren’t allowed to tear the paper and she’d take it from us and carefully fold it up to be used again next year. (Again though, she’d forget she’d done that by the following year and still buy anew.) I don’t buy many presents in advance though. Once my sister-in-law had her fifth child we diplomatically suggested not buying presents for each other’s children. And if I buy too early for my own – now teenagers – chances are they’ll have already bought something similar themselves or gone off that particular fad long before the big day. But there’s one economy measure that really does work: stay away from the internet. If you think about it, when you are in a shop, an overflowing basket or a long queue is enough to make you reconsider. Online however, you can browse, ‘add to basket’ and pay without leaving your armchair, meaning it’s too easy to impulse buy. (Yeah right, if I can effect that policy in my own life, I’ll be spending Christmas polishing my halo.) Happy New Year from the Discover Magazines team!

My grimace gave it away. “... Tom?”

“Right, let’s just hope it fits. We have to be there for seven!”

The Chairman’s annual dinner dance is the highlight of our social calendar (the other important dates being Christmas and my Mum coming for Sunday tea) so what to wear is a stress known only to the fairer sex. I on the other hand have no such conundrum, needing only to dust down my penguin suit (although sometimes the previous twelve months over-indulgence can result in a fight to the death with the trousers).

So my problems were as nothing compared to Sarah’s. Rushing in from work, she ran upstairs to our bedroom, where on the bed lay her nemesis - the ball gown. I was half way up the stairs when an ear piercing scream froze me to the spot. “Tom!” I burst in to see my beloved stuck inside an oversized meringue. “They’ve sent the wrong dress!” Immediately I went into damage limitation mode. “It’s not too bad. Here, can I pin it?” “Since when did you become a 10

My eyes bored into her as I nodded furiously and said, “Doesn’t that dress look lovely on your Mum?” Hannah, glancing up momentarily from her smartphone, took one look at her Mother and said, “Have you not got anything else? What about that black one?” Dragging the Apple of my Eye out onto the landing I said, “Word of advice, don’t ever apply to be a diplomat, will you?” As Hannah rolled her eyes I heard Sarah call from the bedroom. “Right that’s it. I’m not going, you can go on your own.” Disaster loomed. I had to think quick. “Look, let’s see what Debi says.” Debi was Sarah’s best friend and my last hope. Hurriedly, I took some pictures.

“You could at least smile darling.” “Listen David Bailey, there isn’t time.” With Sarah in the bathroom, I seized my chance as Debi’s messages pinged through. “Sorry hon, that dress is awful!” (delete) “Is there nothing else? What about that gorgeous black -” (delete). Beep! The taxi arrived. Bustling Sarah into the back of the cab, I handed over her phone. “Debi hasn’t replied, but I’m sure she loved it.” Outside the hotel, Sarah made a final adjustment to her dress as she looked me up and down. “Have those trousers shrunk or something?” “Let’s just go in shall we?” Shuffling into the lobby, we were greeted by a glitter ball on legs The Chairman’s Wife. “Mrs Hughes, don’t you look... nice?” “There you go, she loves it”, I whispered through my fixed grin. “You’ve a lot to learn about women”, replied Sarah through gritted teeth. Fruit and Nut Granola Bars If you’re worried about additives or extra sweeteners in shop-bought granola bars then why not try making your own? Packed with crunchy nuts and seeds and sweetened only with brown sugar and honey, these home-made oaty bars are perfect for a snack or as an after-school treat.

Ingredients: • 140g porridge oats • 50g unsalted blanched peanuts • 25g pecans, roughly chopped • 25g pumpkin seeds • 20g sunflower seeds • 100g butter, plus extra for greasing • 80g light soft brown sugar • 3 tbsp runny honey • 75g sweetened dried cranberries or jumbo raisins • 2 tbsp sesame seeds

Makes 8 bars or 16 squares Ready in 50 minutes, plus cooling 20

1. Preheat the oven to 160°C/Fan 140°C/Gas 3. Grease an 18cm square shallow cake tin and line the base and sides with baking parchment.

2. Spread the oats, nuts and seeds on a large baking tray and place in the preheated oven for 10-12 minutes until just lightly toasted, stirring once with a wooden spatula.

3. Place the butter, sugar and honey in a large saucepan and heat gently until the butter has melted. Tip the warm oat mixture into the pan and mix thoroughly then stir in the cranberries or raisins and nearly all the sesame seeds.

4. Turn the mixture into the prepared tin and level with the back of a spoon, pressing down firmly. Scatter over the rest of the sesame seeds.

5. Bake in the oven for 25-30 minutes or until just pale golden around the edges. Leave to cool in the tin for 10 minutes, then use the tip of a knife to mark into 8 bars. Leave in the tin until cold then lift out, using the lining paper to help you. Peel away the paper and cut through the marks to make 8 bars. You can vary the nuts and fruit you add to these wholesome bars. Try different nuts, such as walnuts or hazelnuts and replace half the cranberries with goji berries or chopped dried apricots or dates.

Taking Part In Local Amateur Dramatics Amateur theatre is alive and kicking locally with 14 theatre companies, 1100 members and over 50 plays and pantomimes staged every year. The largest in this area is RAODS of Romsey with 250 adult and 60 youth members performing a different play or musical monthly in the 230 seat Art Deco Plaza Theatre. Then there’s The Mountbatten Players whose 26 members perform their much-loved pantomimes every December at The Point in Eastleigh. Nick Coleman of The Chameleons of Chandler’s Ford explained how his love affair with amateur theatre developed, “My father was a member of Canterbury Amateur Operatic Society for over 40 years so I grew up listening to Gilbert & Sullivan operettas and being envious of the fun he was having. I’d always fancied having a go on stage but lacked the time and the courage! When I decided to look into it four years ago I was surprised by how many theatre companies were active locally.” Nick found that there was little collaboration between the amateur theatre community so a year ago he formed The Local Drama Network to encourage the sharing of resources such as props, costumes, cast members and promotional activities. Make Room for Roses by Pippa Greenwood www.pippagreenwood.com It’s the perfect time of year to plant roses, and there should be a good selection in any local garden centre but better still, arm yourself with a few catalogues from the specialist rose nurseries and you can be guaranteed an unbelievable choice of extremely high-quality plants. Although roses look good in beds, borders and sometimes even in containers, why not take the plunge and create your own fantasy rose arch or rose-clad arbour?

If you have an existing arch or pergola then transform it by planting roses now to ensure fabulous colour and perhaps some perfume for many summers to come. If you don’t have an arch, create your own using sturdy timber, or if you don’t feel up to too much DIY and carpentry then simply invest in a good quality wooden or metal arch or pergola kit. You need to start by deciding which type of rose you want: basically, either ramblers or climbers can be used to cover pergolas and arches. The advantage of ramblers is that they tend to have more flexible and pliable stems and so are easier to train over an arch or pergola, particularly one which is relatively tight or narrow. They do, however, have one big disadvantage and that is that they only flower once a year, whereas many of the climbers have two flowering periods or even continue to flower intermittently for months. Choice of colour is down to personal preference, but when choosing a rose or roses to add to your garden bear in mind that many have quite strong colours, so ensure that these will look good with adjacent highly coloured trees and shrubs

and will not look out of keeping with any nearby painted or treated surfaces such as window frames, doors, decking or garden furniture. Don’t forget perfume. This is a vital ingredient as far as I am concerned and certainly adds a wonderfully mystical and sensuous ingredient to any garden. Walking beneath an arch or pergola heavily laden with perfumed roses on a warm summer’s evening takes some beating! If you get your roses delivered, don’t be put off if they appear rather miserable, with somewhat lopsided roots, uninspiring woody stems and little else. This is normal for bare root roses as they will have recently been lifted from the soil, but despite their forlorn appearance they usually establish extremely well. If you can’t get your new purchases into the ground immediately (do always try to plant them as soon as possible), then make sure that you keep the root systems moist by wrapping them in thoroughly moistened hessian or by burying the roots temporarily in garden soil. Make your planting hole close to but not immediately on top of the base of the arch or pergola.

A distance of about 30 – 45 cm (12 – 18 in) works well, but it is essential that you do not make the planting hole too close to any concrete footings or other material located in the soil. Although roses quite like fairly heavy soil, if you soil is based on clay and really heavy and there is any risk of it becoming waterlogged, prepare a really good, large area thoroughly before starting to plant. Dig in well rotted manure, garden compost and grit to ensure good fertility and decrease the risk of waterlogging. This needs to be done over a sizeable area, not just a small planting hole - more of a planting pit! With bare root roses, if the roots are really lopsided and all crammed together, then you do need to spread them out before planting. It may help if you soak the roots in water for a couple of

hours (overnight at the very most) before prising them apart into a good open shape, pruning out any which have been damaged in any way and then getting the rose into the ground as speedily as possible. Always make sure that you plant at the correct depth: the swollen graft point slightly above where the roots start protruding should be just above soil level. This means that only the roots are beneath the soil and the rose will perform better, and with far less risk of growth appearing from the rootstock. Once in place, keep your rose well watered during dry conditions, paying particular care to this over the next 18 months or so. In the spring it is sure to benefit from an application of a rose fertiliser and a topping up of the mulched area.

Newly purchased roses are unlikely to have much in the way of top growth, but once they get going you will obviously need to train these stems into the arch or pergola, securing them at regular intervals with great care, so that they are not damaged by being buffeted against the arch or pergola during windy weather. I like to use the steel wire with a dense foam covering – strong but soft! Good varieties for planting over pergolas and arches: There are lots of different varieties suitable, but some of my favourites include: Veilchenblau ‘Paul’s Scarlet’ (climber), Excelsa ‘Crimson Shower’, Albertine Albericbarbier ‘Golden Showers’, ‘Iceberg’ (climber), Malvern Hills ‘Super Fairy’, ‘Gloire de Dijon’, ‘Zéphirine Drouhin’.

It’s Time To Get That Strictly Sparkle With an average audience of 10.7 million viewers for the 11th series, it’s clear that Strictly Come Dancing is still one of Britain’s favourite TV shows. In addition to its UK success, the BBC has sold the format to other countries and the show renamed ‘Dancing with the Stars’ for overseas audiences - is now watched by over 250 million people worldwide. So what is ballroom dancing and why is has it proved so addictive, not only for Strictly’s high profile participants but for the many thousands who take part in social and competitive dance events throughout the world? The term “Ballroom Dancing” refers to a set of partner dances that have their roots in Europe, North America and Latin America. In Europe formal dances began to receive recognition in the late 16th century, when a French writer called Jehan Tabourot published a study of the social dances of the day, including popular medieval dances such as the pavane, galliard and branie. 38

The French enthusiasm for dance continued strongly throughout the 17th and 18th centuries, when Louis XIV decided to found a royal academy of music and dance and ordered officials to draw up precise rules for the execution of every dance. During this period the Minuet was the height of fashion. This dance required multiple partners, holding hands at a respectful distance, to move together in formation. In the early 19th century the introduction of the waltz, which required partners to move independently, facing each other in a ‘closed hold’, initially caused outrage as it was thought to encourage scandalous intimacy. The waltz sounded the deathknell of the old-fashioned sequence dances and by the early 20th century the pattern of modern ballroom dancing had begun to emerge. A new wave of music, inspired by black jazz musicians in America, encouraged the development of a range of new dances including the Charleston. The public was hungry to learn these new routines and so a number of enterprising professional dance teachers made it their business to analyse, write down, publish and teach the new moves. If popular dance was

to flourish it was essential that people should be able to learn the right steps, and establishments such as the famous Arthur Murray School of Dance in the USA led the way: bringing dance to the masses. This intense interest in ballroom dance eventually led to competitive events, and the first unofficial world championship took place in 1909. Nowadays referred to as “Dancesport”, competitive ballroom dancing is recognised by the International Olympic Committee. Pupil Becomes The Teacher Sam Wilkinson started swimming at 5 years old in a pool with just a newly qualified teacher and his Dad sat on the poolside. Eleven years later and the first Wessex Swim School pupil has just passed his STA Level 2 Award course and has started teaching in the pool where he learnt to swim himself. Sam pictured above with Chris Rees the Managing Director of Wessex Swim School is teaching at Kings’ School in Winchester with small classes of just 3 pupils. Chris who set up the Wessex Swim School when he was just 18 years old himself is delighted to see his first pupil return to the poolside this time as one of the 45 strong staff.

“It’s great to see Sam now using his passion for swimming to encourage others in the water, the swim school has grown massively from when we just had Sam in the water. We now teach over 850 swimmers a week in 3 locations” The only thing Chris is not so keen on is how his former pupil is now taller and faster in the water than him!

Sam is delighted to get a job with his former swim school. “It feels great to be back and passing on all the skills I learnt, I love being in the water and I will be more than happy to demonstrate Butterfly with more classes”

After doing lessons with Chris and Wessex Swim School Sam moved to Locks Heath Swim Squad and after initially struggling with Butterfly in the early years it is now his favourite stroke.

Sam started teaching in September 11 years after first starting lessons. Wessex Swim School now operates in Winchester, Southampton and Salisbury.

Rod Stewart At the age of 70, Rod Stewart is showing no signs of slowing down. After a critically acclaimed 2013 album, he has returned with a new CD for 2015 ‘Another Country’. He caught up with Lucy Ambache from the Evening Breeze, and talked superheroes, haircuts and yoga.

Rod - you’ve still got it. What is it that I’ve got? I don’t know! You’ve had it for a long time. Well I’m not going to give it back, that’s for sure! What is it though? I don’t know, You tell me! You haven’t changed really. Is that what it is? I dunno. Maybe. The album’s really awesome. Oh thank you. I did get a lot of inspiration from the previous album, ‘Time’. The fans had put together a book of all the emails and texts sent to the fan club and I thought “they really did like this one” so it gave me the inspiration to make another one. It’s really dedicated to the fans. You’ve got a bit of reggae on there, along with some ska. Yeah and one of my favourite tracks is dedicated to my four year old son called ‘Batman, Superman, Spiderman’.
