Hello and Welcome January is typically one of the harder months of the year to live in the UK. The days are gloomy, often cold and wet; coughs and colds are widespread; it’s back to work with any planned holidays still months away. On top of that so many begin the year full of remorse for overindulging at Christmas, and the focus on improving our health is higher at this time than any other. I’m a real advocate of exercise and believe in it both for the physical and mental benefi ts that it brings. Although Mel and I and our husbands have been lifelong exercisers, for us girls there was always the added incentive that it might help us to lose weight. But on its own – without addressing what we ate – that benefi t always eluded us. But last year I finally found Utopia: I lost weight, I absolutely know I’ll never put it back on, I wasn’t hungry, it wasn’t (that) hard. Mel joined me a couple of months down the line and she agrees that we’ve

found the solution. I’ve had so many people ask me about it that I’ve written up a few notes about my research and some practical ideas at www.discoveryourtoes.co.uk. Something I think that does make January more interesting is to get a home project underway. Whether it’s something small such as having the garden tidied, or big, such as fi tted furniture or a new kitchen it’s a great time to improve your property. (Did you know that Rum’s Eg was the Old English name for Romsey?) Romsey has a new arts and crafts exhibition and saleroom. The light and airy gallery at 27 Bell Street is crammed with ceramics, jewellery, sculpture and paintings by local artists at prices ranging from affordable pocket money pieces to very reasonably priced original artwork. If you want to buy an imaginative gift then Rum’s Eg is the place to go – and unique wrapping paper and cards are available too. Of course, you could just treat yourself to something to cheer up a dull corner at home, or simply enjoy a cup of coffee in the Art Café. The Hampshire Arts and Crafts Community Interest Project (CIC) was formed in May 2012 by

4

Directors Siriol Sherlock (who is widely recognized as one of the world’s top contemporary botanical artists) and Annie Jeffrey (a local sculptor whose work reflects her interests in human, equine and botanical shapes). As well as being a much needed permanent showcase and sales point for Hampshirebased artists, Rum’s Eg will run workshops for various groups within the community including disadvantaged children and adults with disabilities. Facilities will be provided for groups to learn from the skills and experience of artists and craftspeople who are already showcasing their work in the gallery.

The opening night and first week of trading for this brilliant venture was a roaring success and the Gallery was able to extend the Christmas Exhibition opening into January instead of closing on 22 December and reopening in February. They had to restock with artworks! On the opening night Waitrose donated £10,000 from their Community Matters Fund which will pay for the refurbishment of the second floor of Rum's Eg to include The Leckford Art Studio and Longstock Meeting Room. Jaguar F-Type

More than 1,000 buyers have placed a deposit or expressed a serious interest in buying the F-Type. Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) managing director Jeremy Hicks said that he asked his dealer network to find out just how popular the new sports car would be, and the results came as a nice surprise. ‘We asked how many people were seriously interested,’ said Hicks. ‘What we’ve found is a very strong level of interest. F-Type will draw from performance saloon and coupe buyers because the design credentials are great. We want this car to re-establish the Jaguar brand. It’s a big statement car and returns us to where our roots lie: sports cars.’ Priced from £58,000, Jaguar is aggressively targeting the Porsche 911 and even though it’s a small sector in terms of sales, the British manufacturer is hoping for great things. ‘We have huge expectations of what it can do for the brand,’ added Hicks. ‘It’s not going to be massive in terms of volumes – remember this is a niche sector we are operating in. The good news is we have three positives; it’s well priced, it drives brilliantly and there’s a home advantage.’ The F-Type, arriving in the brand’s 90 dealers in the spring, is the start of a product offensive from Jaguar. The XF Sportbrake will also be arriving soon and other volume sectors are being explored too. ‘We are laying the foundations for growth and that means new cars in new segments,’ revealed Hicks. ‘The obvious place to go is down to the burgeoning area of the market. We need smaller cars, saloon cars and we’re looking at the crossover market. The SUV market is growing and even though we’re there with JLR, the definitive SUV maker, there is scope for Jaguar too.’

Cat’s out of the bag There’s no shortage of interest in the new Jaguar F-Type, the firm’s boss Jeremy Hicks tells James Baggott

Hicks explained JLR invests £2bn a year in R&D (he claims that’s higher than any UK car manufacturer) and the team are looking at several options including a replacement for the X Type. ‘Jaguar has an opportunity to move down from the XF,’ he said. ‘A Mondeo sized car. We’ve been there with the X Type and did well however the problem with the X and S Types, in my opinion, was that they were too retrospective. The F Type isn’t; it has lineage and clear DNA, but it’s not a retro car.’ JLR has been a fantastic success story. Whilst in 2008 the manufacturer was accepting loans from the government, new products have launched successfully and the maker has bounced back. ‘What’s the secret? Great cars,’ explained Hicks. ‘The crisis was a combination of financial problems and the SUV market being down in general, plus this was immediately prior to the XF launch.’ ‘Since then we’ve had the XF and Evoque launches which have transformed things. We are up 30% year on year. I put that down to a passionate team and a real can-do attitude. Even the dealer network can see that.’ Hicks said the dealers are seeing the returns too with profitability up. But the MD has ruled out increasing the size of either the Jaguar or Land Rover networks from their current 90 and 120 points respectively. ‘Both franchises are profitable,’ he said. ‘But that doesn’t mean we’re going to drive growth by expanding the network. The current sites are making good returns so it’s more important to drive more capacity through those. We can see bigger sites at some of our outlets, but not new dealers.’ by James Baggott, editor of Car Dealer Magazine (CarDealerMag.co.uk)

Southampton area. Roy had fitted contact lenses to an incredible 15,000+ Southampton people.

If you suffer from myopia – short sightedness – you will almost certainly have tried contact lenses at some point. They really are a revolution for so many people, giving you normal sight, with better peripheral vision than glasses offer and none of the problems such as steaming up or dirt. Certainly if you do any sort of sport, you probably couldn’t imagine life without them. But you are putting something directly in your eye, so the fit and care of your lenses is a really important part of using them.

The really good news is that Roy and his wife Lynne have set up an entirely new practice in Chandlers Ford. Hampson Opticians Ltd is where he continues to fit contact lenses, welcoming new and existing wearers to his skillful care. Hampson Opticians also conducts full eye examinations and has a vibrant range of superb glasses frames all at very low prices.

Roy Hampson, acknowledged as one of the globally acclaimed group of British contact lens pioneers, began fitting contact lenses in Southampton when he opened the first Optique practice in Bedford Place early in 1985. Other practices in Bitterne and Totton soon followed and by the time he sold the business in 2010, Optique had grown to six practices all in the

Roy actively supports the competitive supply of contact lenses especially over the internet. Consequently he is very shortly going to be launching his website to enable you to do that. In the meantime, please call or pop in and you’ll find you’ll be able to buy now at the prices he will be offering online (prescription details required).

Timsbury and Michelmersh Walk Walk Distance 3.9 miles Historical Notes Timsbury derives its name from ‘timber + byrig’ meaning timber fort or manor. Similarly, Michelmersh derives its name from ‘micel + mersc’ meaning a large marsh. St Mary’s church at Michelmersh is of 12th century origin. It is alleged that Henry V rested his troops in Agincourt Field, situated just below the church, before their embarkation to France as part of the Hundred Years War. These troops it is said were fielded at the famous battle of Agincourt in October 1415. • Timsbury is situated on the A3057 Romsey to Stockbridge road just a few miles north of Romsey. Park in the Jubilee Hall car park at Timsbury which is sign posted from the A3057. Alternatively, park in the small lay-by just past the hall on the right hand side of the road. The Jubilee Hall should not be confused with the village hall in Heron Lane shown on the OS 131 map. • Leave the car park and turn right along the road. • Turn right onto a signed footpath and walk along the gravel track. • At a fork in the track, keep right and walk past Hunts Farm. • Emerge onto a road and turn right. Walk past the farm where the road is joined by another road from the right. Keep straight on for approximately 50 yards then climb the bank on your right onto a footpath running parallel to the road. • The footpath descends to the road again adjacent to a pair of metal gates either side of the road. Continue straight on along the road. • As the road turns sharp right, cross over a stile onto a signed footpath leading into a field. • Continue straight ahead following the fence line and ignoring any crossing tracks. • As the track bears left into a field, continue straight ahead onto a signed footpath through a woodland fringe with a field to your left initially then a field on your right. • Cross a stile into a field walking along the right hand boundary on top of a ridge. • The path drops down off the ridge to a stile. Cross the stile into a copse.

• Emerge from the copse into a field. Walk along the left hand fence line. • Cross a stile at the field boundary, turn left and cross a second stile to follow the right hand fence line of a field. • The track goes straight on initially and then starts to veer left away from the fence. As the farm track starts to turn away left, look for a stile slightly diagonally right in the far hedge line. It is situated some 100 yards from the right hand corner of the field. • Cross the stile onto a gravel track, then cross two further stile directly opposite to emerge into a field. • The original footpath here has been ploughed out, so follow the left hand field boundary to the field edge then turn right keeping the fence to your left. • At a ‘T’ junction of paths, turn left onto a signed footpath across the centre of the field. • Cross a stile into another field and follow the left hand fence line to the opposite side of the field. • Cross a stile onto a gravel track and turn left. • Follow the track to its junction with a tarmac road. Turn right to Manor Farm. • Walk through the farm going straight on along a gravel track as it rises slightly uphill. • At a pair of private dwellings, the track turns sharp right. Continue straight on into what appears to be the entrance drive to the left hand bungalow. As you reach the gates, cross a stile on the right hand side to walk between the two properties. • Cross yet another stile into a field. Walk across the field to a signpost located in the field centre. ...Continued on page 16

New Year, New You It’s January, and you are feeling in need of a quick fix so you can begin to feel healthy again. But how do you decide on a suitable exercise regime to help you lose weight and regain vitality? Working out at home with the help of a video console has become a popular alternative to going out to a dance class or a gym. The great advantage is that it allows you to design a programme to suit your own needs and preferences. However if - like me - you’re not a great self-motivator, you may find it hard to keep going without a human instructor to give encouragement. After several attempts to follow an aerobic routine in my lounge I made the decision to join a regular exercise class. A quick browse round the websites of local clubs brings up an array of exercise styles with exotic-sounding names such as Zumba, Pilates, Ashtanga Yoga, Hatha Yoga and Tai Chi. It’s nice to be spoiled for choice, but there are a few things to consider before you start. How old are you? Do you have any medical conditions? How much exercise do you normally take? If a leisurely stroll round the supermarket is your main form of exercise then a cardiovascular workout is probably not the place to start. You need to build your programme slowly, so you could begin with a beginners’ yoga class where you will be concentrating on breathing and stretching. If you are new to structured exercise you will be glad to know that yoga is about doing as much as you feel your own body can manage. Its emphasis on slow movements, posture and deep breathing really helps to build muscular strength and improve balance. There are a variety of different kinds of yoga, some of which are really quite challenging for a beginner, so do have a chat with the instructor before booking your course. Pilates borrows heavily from yoga and was originally devised to help injured dancers and athletes. Once again there is an emphasis on good posture and exercises are designed to strengthen the spine, improve circulation and open up the joints. As with Yoga you can look forward to a fantastic sense of release and revitalisation at the end of each class. However you decide to pursue your new exercise regime, make a promise to yourself to keep it up. A fitness programme that is currently enjoying huge success

in this country is Zumba. Invented by Columbian choreographer Alberto Perez in the 1990s, Zumba combines exercise with dance. Unlike conventional dance classes where the instructor faces the class and teaches a series of steps, Zumba is a continuous series of free-flowing moves – the instructor stands with his or her back to the class, demonstrating actions for the students to follow. If you enjoy dancing to music then this is probably a good choice, but do think twice if your movement is restricted or if you suffer from high blood pressure. However you decide to pursue your new exercise regime, make a promise to yourself to keep it up. After a few weeks you’ll be surprised to find how much better you feel, both physically and mentally. It may take a few attempts before you find a class that suits you, but it will be worth it in the end. Make sure the New Year really does mean a new you. By Claudia Leaf

Dear Maggie

Hearing problems?

Six months ago a friend set up a Facebook account for me. I’ve linked up with some old chums and a few relations and enjoy reading their posts and viewing their photographs. A real highlight was pictures of my god-daughter’s new baby. Two months ago I accepted an invitation from my grand-daughter, who is 13, to be a Facebook ‘friend’. Now I’m very concerned about what I see she is doing, drinking alcohol and talking explicitly about sex. What should I do? y

Dear Lesley

Through Facebook you have found out things about your grand-daughter that you would prefer not to know, and you’re not sure what action to take. Regarding the sexual content, this kind of talk is not unusual for a girl her age amongst her peers, but isn’t appropriate when many others can see. I am concerned about the alcohol, which may be clouding her judgement and can also lead to sexual promiscuity. Who is purchasing this for her and thereby breaking the law? Do her parents know? Try to find out more. But if you raise a storm in the process you may run aground. Start perhaps by quietly asking her.

The Life List A Canine Conundrum

Sometimes empty nest syndrome strikes. We miss that joyful chaos in the mornings and may even yearn for the pitter-patter of tiny feet. Why not opt for tiny pads? We’ve had a 7000 year-old best friendship and here’s what you need to know... The best part about having a pet dog • An easy friend to get presents for: a stick, an old bone, or the ball that’s been stuck in the drawer for two months. • Someone to blame for unexpected wind. “Ooh, bad doggie...” • A portable, 24-hour waste disposal unit recycling on the go. • A loyal friend who never reveals your

secrets, including the Sunday ‘walk’ to the pub for an hour. • They’ll keep you fit - chasing after them. • No more cat poo in the garden. • Always pleased to see you no matter how indifferent, irate or drunk you are.

The worst part about having a pet dog • What goes in must come out, usually in front of strangers when the last poo bag is ripped. • Doors and furniture, unlike the backs of ears, do not need to be scratched. • Doggie breath, when you least expect it. • The, ahem, cleaning routine. Now you know why your mum never let a dog lick your face when you were young. • Dog poos in the garden are bigger than next door’s cat poos used to be. • As it never speaks, your dog may appear smarter than you are. © Derek Thompson www.alongthewritelines.blogspot.com

Haywood Office Services Choosing an office chair If you are working in a home office you’ll probably spend more time sat in your office chair than you do sitting on your living room furniture. So comfort of your seating is an important consideration but even more so is the ergonomics. An office chair that supports the lower back and promotes good posture will not only help you to avoid aggravating back problems, but will often stop them developing in the first place. A good chair is adjustable for the height of the seat and arms, the angle of the backrest and the lumbar support. The seat needs to be wide enough for you, but also deep enough from front to back – you neither want to be hanging off the edge, or finding yourself unable to sit

far enough back. Then the matter of the material covering the chair and the colour and style are other elements to decide on. Of course with something like this being so personal, it’s really important to go and try out your chair before you buy. Haywood Office Services have an extensive showroom of office furniture and chairs in their centre in Chandlers Ford. You can try out the chair sat in front of a proper desk, make all the adjustments and sit much as you would if you were at home. Even better, when you’ve found the perfect office chair, they’ll give you £10 for your old chair which is definitely better than throwing it away!

HAMPSHIRE HERITAGE Exploring Country Churches There’s a scene early in Downton Abbey in which Matthew and Edith are touring the local countryside exploring churches. Church exploring was once the preserve of the leisured classes, but while attending services in church has declined dramatically in the last hundred years, visiting churches simply to soak up their atmosphere has probably never been more popular. Why? Almost anyone you talk to will tell you they love the atmosphere of little country churches. This feeling, a mixture of comfort and awe, has been described perfectly by the poet Philip Larkin in his well-known poem ‘Church going’ (a title that is a play on words). There can be little doubt that our enthusiasm for visiting churches stems from some deep human need that is unfulfilled in our materialistic, often agnostic, lives. But that doesn’t mean exploring churches must be a spiritual exercise. Churches reflect our island’s history and are architecturally absorbing, often beautiful. And their interiors contain a great variety of aspects

The church of St Mary and St Michael at Stoke Charity

of interest – soaring architecture, sculpture in stone, carving in wood, richly ornate monuments. Every church is different and is always more than the sum of its parts. The oldest churches to be found in Hampshire were built in Saxon times, before the Norman conquest. Many more are Norman, built in the 11th and 12th centuries. None of them look today just as they did when they were built. Much of the fascination of churches lies in the way they reflect the changing patterns of religious worship. Changes in the liturgy (the form of the services) brought huge changes in church interiors. Henry VIII’s break with the Roman Catholic church in the 16th century resulted in the carved screens between nave and chancel being ripped out, carvings and statues broken, stained glass windows smashed, wall paintings covered in lime wash. And it happened again, some would say even more violently, a century later in the time of Cromwell and Puritanism. During these upheavals, which will have been hard for ordinary people to understand or bear, the focal point of the church moved from the altar to the pulpit. Churches became ‘preaching boxes’ with the emphasis on the spoken word of the sermon and biblical texts on painted boards on the walls. Church attendance became compulsory by law and preaching likewise. Grim though it sounds, this movement ...Continued on page 30

produced some handsome interiors, with clear glass windows giving a beautiful light, fine box pews and magnificently carved pulpits. Church interiors became simple again, revealing something that Catholicism had obscured: the beauty of simplicity. But things were not to remain like that. For every action, there is a reaction, and in the church it was called the Oxford Movement, a group who believed that the church must return to the forms of service and architecture of what they saw as the high point in its evolution, the Decorated or middlepointed Gothic style (roughly 1250-1350). What I have said above briefly sketches some the background to the changes in church design that have occurred over the centuries. But what of individual churches in our county? What to see, where to go? With so many churches to choose from, even a random approach will yield much of interest. Hampshire’s strength probably lies in early (preGothic), small churches in deeply rural settings, exactly the sort I like best. So it is a few of these that I shall briefly describe now. The church of St Mary and St Michael at Stoke Charity, east of Sutton Scotney, stands in a field, near a pond. Inside it feels like a miniature cathedral. To quote the church’s excellent guide book, it is a treasure house of beautiful and ancient objects. The building dates mainly from the 12th and 13th centuries, the Norman nave and chancel perhaps being added to a small Saxon church. In complete contrast, nothing prepares you for the Georgian church of All Saints in Minstead, in the New Forest . Viewed from the lychgate, the church could be mistaken for cottages, but for the later brick tower. Stepping inside reveals an interior almost like a house. There were once three large private pews for the comfort of the parish’s gentry. They even had their own fireplaces. The church of St Nicholas at Boarhunt should not be missed. The Saxon walls are mostly original and the interior wonderful – quite small, rather dark because the windows are very

All Saints Church, Minstead

small, plain and simple. But hugely atmospheric. Lastly, my personal favourite: the tiny church of St John at Farley Chamberlayne, in deep rural isolation northwest of Hursley. It can seat only about 70 people, and apart from some fine monuments to the great and good, it is fairly basic. It is also utterly charming. Every visit to a new church is exciting. Be warned, though, about the bane of the church explorer: the locked church. In theory there may be a telephone number or an address from which the key can be obtained. But I’ve seldom found it to be like that, so if a church is locked I simply move on. To me, a locked church is a contradiction in terms. But let’s assume that, happily, you find the door unlocked and are savouring the atmosphere of a brand new (to you) church. My advice would be not to worry too much about historical identifications but to enjoy the entirety for what it is. Nearly all churches have a little guide book on sale, which is well worth buying. It will help you learn about what you see, and you can build up a collection to look back on. Finally, if you possibly can, do leave a donation in the box in the wall. The cost of maintaining our churches is frightening, and they are a unique part of our heritage. Think of your great-greatgrandchildren. How tragic if they were never to see an English country church. by Stephen Harvey

Short Story The Resolution

“Interested in my New Year’s resolution?” Clive asked his daughter as they were eating dinner one evening. “Mmm”, said Jenny. “I’ve decided to start going to your Zumba class, so I can spend more time with you”. The statement was rewarded with a sudden clatter of cutlery. “But you can’t!” she exclaimed. For weeks now Jenny had been going to Zumba. At first Clive had not given it a thought until he accidentally read one of her text messages: ‘Expecting you at 7.30 tonight. Don’t be late, I’m seeing another girl at 8.30. Brian’. Clive hated snooping on his daughter. Yet even though she was now eighteen, she was always going to be his little girl. So who was this Brian? It didn’t sound like a young man’s name, which worried Clive. What worried him more was the cocky tone of the message. And could his lovely, bright Jenny fall for a bloke who had a string of girls on the go? Something was making her lie about where she was going and Clive was determined to find out what, even if he had to call her bluff. “Why can’t I come to Zumba darling?” Clive asked sweetly. He braced himself for a full confession. “Because you’ll be completely embarrassing,” Jenny muttered. And this was how, two evenings later, Clive found himself the only man in a freezing church hall full of ladies wearing leggings. “Let’s stick near the back,” he whispered to Jenny. There followed, as Jenny predicted, a completely embarrassing hour of squatting, wiggling, skipping, arm waving and accidentally poking people in the eye. Before the warm up had even finished Clive resolved never to doubt his daughter again. When everyone in the room turned left Clive stumbled right. When they sashayed forward he staggered back. He had never inadvertently patted so many ladies’ bottoms in his life. He felt like a bowling ball careering through a room full of skittles. Then he completely misjudged a lunge and fell hands first against the large chest of a lady wearing a pink tee-shirt emblazoned with the words ‘The Fun Starts Here’. The hour could not end soon enough. Finally the music stopped. “Thank you, ladies and gentleman,” the instructor announced. “And well done to our two new members”. Everyone in the room turned and looked at Jenny and Clive. By the horrified expression on Jenny’s face Clive realised the truth - this was Jenny’s first Zumba class as well.

They had an uncomfortable walk to the car park. Finally Jenny cleared her throat, “Okay Dad, you’ve caught me out,” she confessed. “The truth is I’ve been going to kickboxing classes”. “Kickboxing!” Clive exclaimed, imagining all sorts of horrible things. “Before you go mental, it’s not dangerous, it’s…” Jenny searched for the right word, “…disciplined”. Clive wished he could believe her. At least at Zumba no one got hurt, well apart from all the ladies he’d trodden on that evening. “Come and watch me Dad, before you make up your mind. I’m good at it”. She hugged his arm. “You did say you wanted to spend more time with me”. Clive felt himself soften, but he still had one big question. “So who’s this Brian?” Jenny looked surprised. “Brian’s the instructor.” She sounded suspicious, “How do you know about him?” Clive decided now was a good time to change the subject, “Shall we get some chips?” He patted his stomach. “All that Zumba has made me hungry”. “The fun starts here!” Jenny giggled and gave him a hug. Clive pulled his sternest face. “We shall never speak of that incident again”.

Romsey Hospital League of Friends The League of Friends was formed in 1949 following the creation of the NHS. Volunteers who had previously contributed towards funding and running many hospitals found that they now had a different role to play. The League of Friends is a charitable organisation and has continued to play a vital role in NHS hospitals nationwide. Recently, the Romsey League of Friends has raised money to supply equipment for the x-ray clinic, special mattresses for wards, chairs for the outpatients department, and cups, saucers and a toaster for the kitchen. The Romsey volunteers maintain the therapeutic garden where patients can enjoy fine weather. Volunteers make and serve tea to patients every day throughout the year. Money to fund these ventures comes from fundraising and public donations. Membership is £5 a year. For further details please contact Jean Denham, tel 01794 513312.
