Quick, Quick, Slow I spend my life trying to find ways to get things done more efficiently, in an effort to save time. Technology has been a fantastic facilitator of this goal and things that took forever 10 years ago can now be done in a flash. So why don’t I actually feel I have more time at all? My husband said it’s because whenever I offload/outsource/automate something in our lives, I then take on another project which is bigger than the time I have just freed! I guess also, whereas years ago I might have said ‘that’ll do’, now I set myself higher standards. A case in point: yes I have an automatic washing machine which is wonderful. So now I iron my teatowels (at which the whole family shakes their heads in disbelief). The whole ‘rush rush’ spills over into other aspects of life and my children’s generation doesn’t expect to wait for anything. My daughter – already notoriously impatient – orders online at 8pm in the evening then expects her goods to arrive by 9am the next day. And sometimes they do! As for having a gap in the day to do nothing… perish the thought. We are either speaking, surfing, texting, watching or doing. Except on holiday when somehow sitting by a pool, doing nothing other than watching the world go by is the activity of choice. The days slow down, our batteries are recharged, and all is well with the world. I don’t have an answer to this dilemma by the way, I’m just acknowledging that it’s the way of the world and I’ll bet most of you can empathise. But as my next birthday looms and I realise I started my first magazine 10 years ago, it does remind me that aiming for a few unrushed days is a good thing. In the summer months particularly, fetes, fairs, carnivals, open days, gardens and the like (see our what’s on listings on page 42) are good use of my life and certainly a lot more memorable than another day in front of a PC.

A Feast of a Festival Jam Making

Every July Hampshire celebrates its abundance of food and drink through the Hampshire Food Festival, a delicious month-long diary of events for everyone to enjoy. This popular festival is organised by the county’s food group, Hampshire Fare, with events throughout the county held by local producers, farmers, pubs and restaurants. Popular events include brewery, farm and vineyard tours, cookery classes and demonstrations, produce markets and tastings, picnics, barbecues and cream teas, jam-making and cheesemaking, and special Festival menus showcasing local ingredients plus much more. Tracy Nash, Commercial Manager, Hampshire Fare, describes it as the foodie event of the year, “ I’m really excited as the Festival has moved up a gear this year. The quality, variety and geographical spread is brilliant. There’s something for everyone. We’ve seen a lot of our members getting 6

involved for the first time and quite a few businesses who aren’t Hampshire Fare members coming on board, too. This year is really shaping up to be the best Festival yet!” There’s much to be excited about. Highlights include an invitation from Lord and Lady Wakeham and Hampshire Fare to a special Local Food Shopping Experience Evening on Friday, 11 July, to be held in the magnificent surroundings of Pinglestone Barn, a 15th century monastic aisled barn. Tickets are £10 and include a glass of Hattingley Valley fizz with all profits going to Age UK Winchester. There is also a Vineyards of Hampshire Wine Festival at Jenkyn’s Place Vineyard on Sunday, 13 July and Sparsholt’s, ‘A Taste Of Hampshire’ on Saturday, 19 July with eight leading Hampshire chefs in the

Hampshire Fare Cookery Theatre, including James Durrant (seen on Great British Menu) and Luke Holder (from Lime Wood) plus Kids’ Kitchen and Cake-Off competition judged by Harry the Junior Bake-Off winner. The Festival starts from 25 June with a theatre menu and performances in the gardens of The Thomas Lord, West Meon and runs until 3 August with Trout ‘n About Stockbridge market-style food festival. Discovering the stories behind the producers is a great way to explore the county with its varied landscape of lush farmland, downland, woodland, chalk stream valleys and coast. Pick up a free copy of the Hampshire Food Festival programme from Southern Co-operative stores or download the programme from www.hampshirefare.co.uk.

Sunny Summer Days... Or Not By Ted Bruning

Ahhh, it’s summer at last; the sky is blue; the air is warm and your neighbourhood smells delightfully of sun-tan lotion and barbecue. Of course, being British, we understand that our summers are never a glorious succession of hot dry days and long evenings of tennis and Pimms. Indeed, it has even been known to rain sometimes. But let’s forget about the weather for a moment and focus on the climate – the difference being that the weather is what actually happens to you, while the climate is what weather becomes when people start analyzing it. The other difference is that climate is almost predictable but weather most certainly isn’t. The wedding planners, barbecue chefs, church fête organisers etcetera want to know when is the best time for the wedding/barbecue/fête/day-trip or whatever? But the best answer is – and it’s a truly British answer, this – none of them. And any of them. So let’s narrow it down. Which is usually the least rainy month of summer? It has 10

to be July, surely. Wrong! July is usually the wettest, actually, with an average of 101mm over the five years 2008-12. Then – another big surprise – was August with 91.6mm, then September with 77.1mm, and taking gold by a healthy margin, was June with only 50.5mm. Mind you, June 2012 was also the rainiest month of all five summers in the sample with a squelching 157.8mm, and the two biggest rain-induced flash floods in living in memory weren’t in July but August – Lynmouth in 1952 and Boscastle in 2004. This, of course, being the difference between weather and climate. All right then, which is the sunniest, i.e. which has the best average of sunny hours per day (which we shall call SHPD for the sake of brevity)? This one has to be July, right? Uh-uh. The 10year average for July is 6 SHPD, better than August at 5.5 SHPD and September (when of course the days are shorter anyway) at only 5 SHPD; but the winner is once again June with 6.9 SHPD. Still, July 2013 racked up an average of 8.2 SHPD, which is a record in recent years. July is, at least, the warmest month of summer, with average temperatures ranging from 13.723.4C over the past 20 years; but only just. August has been a close challenger, with an average

low just edging ahead of July’s at 13.8C but an average high just missing at 23.1C; so not much in it there. June and September, though, fall woefully short with ranges of 11.8-21C and 11.420C – it’s almost as if they aren’t even trying. All this, of course, depends on where you are. The further north you go the colder it gets, right? Well, yes; but not directly because you’re north – England has vineyards at the same latitude that Canada has polar bears. The skies above us are a battleground where four sets of weather fight for supremacy: Western Scotland gets its from the Maritime Polar region (cold and wet); Eastern Scotland and the North of England get theirs from the Continental Polar (cold and dry); Wales and the West Country are at the mercy of the Maritime Tropical (warm and wet); and East Anglia and the South of England bask in the Continental Tropical (warm and dry). Hence the hottest day on record was 10th August 2003 in Faversham, Kent (38.5C), while the coldest was 30th December 1995 at Altnaharran, Sutherland (-27.2C). Well, that’s me decided, then. This year’s barbecues will be in Faversham. Which is handy, because that’s where my Mum lives.

Look up! And get more space at home for just £325 We'd all like more room at home. But not everyone can afford to move or extend. So what if there was a way to get extra space for just a few hundred pounds, ready to use in less than a day? In truth, that space is already there. It's just not being used to its full potential. For most, the loft is a dark and dingy place visited on rare occasions; a precarious scramble across dusty beams with torch in hand, grabbing what's needed then clambering back past boxes filled with long-forgotten belongings. But that dark and dingy place is worth thousands. In fact, it takes up a third of the floorspace in an average home.

Call us now on: 0800

So shouldn't we be making the most of it? And that's where More Than Loft Ladders (MTLL) comes in. Founded in Bolton six years ago, MTLL specialises in generating space by making our lofts easily accessible. The latest MTLL franchise is based in Bournemouth and is run by skilled local, Jon Burt, who says the company's no-frills approach is what most people are looking for. “We're not selling £15,000 loft conversions,” says Jon. “This is a low-cost and simple alternative. For just £277 + VAT you can get a ladder that slides easily up and

down, as well as a proper light and some boarding to make the space safe and secure. We can also fit a draft-proof loft hatch if required from only £55.” The price customers are quoted is the price they will pay, with no additional call out charges. Jon provides a free guarantee on all parts and labour too. For a free survey and quotation with no obligation, contact More Than Loft Ladders now! GARDENING

Mediterranean Magic By Pippa Greenwood Your very own relaxing haven

If you can’t get away this year, how about creating your own Mediterranean hotspot in your garden? Even if you do manage to escape to the sun for a week or two this year, you’ll still have the rest of the summer at home and a little slice of Italy, France or Greece outside your back door will bring happy memories flooding back.

The first thing to do when making a Mediterranean corner in your garden, is to choose the sunniest spot available – it’ll not only make sitting out there more enjoyable, but will also mean that you can install some serious sun-loving plants too. Painting the nearby house, shed or garage wall with white masonry paint will help to create the right atmosphere and look. At the same time it will help to reflect our sunlight – often a bit washed out compared to more southern climes - so providing a stronger light for the type of plants that appreciate it. Mediterranean gardens often make full use of the walls and any other vertical surfaces, so put up pot-rings, pot-hangers and brackets with hanging baskets, pots and wall baskets and cram them full of plants. If the containers are small they will need very regular watering so go for some of the more drought-tolerant plants such as geraniums, pelargoniums and sedums. Plants in pots are a must and if possible choose stone or terracotta containers as these add to the Mediterranean feel.

32

If you want to make brand new pots look more weathered try painting them with a solution of plain yoghurt – it may sound crazy but this will help to encourage rapid colonisation by mosses, algae and lichens all of which will help to give that well-loved look. Any new hard landscaping such as wall, paths or patios and terraced surfaces will look best in natural stone and there are now also gorgeous looking terracotta tiles available that are suitable for use in the garden. All these help to give the right feel and bring about a definite warmth. Terracotta tiles can also have a storageheater effect too – after a long, hot day they will have absorbed a good deal of heat and this will then be released gradually in the evening making it even more appealing to sit out and enjoy that glass of something continental. Add interest to a vertical surface - be it a wall with supports attached or an arch or pergola - by planting a vine. They have attractive leaves and there are plenty to choose from that will fruit well in our climate. You may not be able to create your

own vintage but the vines will look gorgeous especially when draped with a few bunches of grapes. Glazed tiles, wall-hangings and even the odd ornament or two can also add to the Mediterranean look, but make sure you choose items that won’t be instantly bleached by the sun. If you have wooden garden furniture which is past its best, paint it white or a vivid blue, and buy a brightly coloured tablecloth. Eating alfresco will instantly make you feel like you are on holiday. If you look at photos of Mediterranean scenes, you’ll notice that much of the hard landscaping is ‘shabby-chic’. Rough plastering, crumbly mortar and plants growing in cracks create an authentic feel.

Try growing your own oranges or lemons. It is easier than you might have thought and with our generally milder winters some gardeners are even managing to keep these plants outside all year round with only the minimum of protection. Growing your citrus tree in a good-sized terracotta pot means that you can move it into a more protected spot if necessary. With their wonderful silvery grey leaves and their often rather untidy or gnarled shape, olives too are a plant well worth considering. These Mediterranean classics are now readily available in many garden centres. In warmer parts of the country and especially in city-centre gardens crops of edible olives are now becoming more common too. Olives are best grown in a large container unless you have a warm

garden and a very well-drained soil as they hate winter wet. Some plants just spell out Mediterranean Magic – try geraniums and pelargoniums, aeoniums and sempervivums, rosemary, thyme, oregano and pretty well anything with silvery foliage. Plant up beds, borders and pots for colour and don’t forget, that in the case of the herbs, your new holiday destination will also benefit from a subtle Mediterranean aroma too. Visit Pippa’s website www. pippagreenwood.com for her ‘Winter thru’ Spring’ vegetable collection, great plants for September planting and regular advice emails from Pippa, and a great range of gardening products including Nemasys caterpillar, slug, ant and other biological controls, Enviromesh & Envirofleece

Hambrooks Winning Design for Hampton Court Palace Flower Show 2014 Winning Design ‘Halo’

The Royal Horticulture Society (RHS) and the Association of Professional Landscapers (APL) have selected Hambrooks to build a garden for the annual RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show in July for their ‘Your Garden Your Budget’ project.

Hambrooks Garden Designer Stuart Towner

34

Landscapers across the UK are invited to submit designs and this is the third year that the RHS and APL have jointly sponsored this project. It features four categories of gardens as part of a scheme to bring to the general public’s attention what can be achieved within particular budgets. Hambrooks Garden Designer Stuart Towner, created the winning design called ‘Halo’, which was selected for the £13,000 budget category. The Mediterranean themed garden with arid planting, traditional crazy paving and paths is based on the imagery of a classic Greek island with a contemporary interpretation of the Greek Orthodox Church. A small courtyard garden that is almost theatrical in style, it is primarily for entertaining. Stuart Towner who is a student member of the revered Society of Garden Designers, is currently studying part-time for a BA in Garden Design at Greenwich University. His idea materialised from a concept that takes in the

natural harmony of the Greek landscape and creates a modern interpretation of the classic Greek style that has been around for thousands of years. Managing Director Norman Hambrook said, “This idea of presenting gardens that are within a certain budget to visitors at the prestigious Hampton Palace Court Flower Show, is an excellent way of demonstrating the fact you don’t have to spend a fortune on gardens to have something really quite spectacular – you just need great garden design!”

The RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show 2014 is being held from the 8th - 13th July.
