We’re into our food, my family. Of course everyone is ‘into’ food to survive, but some people do just Melanie Tinson & Tania Houston eat to live. Not us though – we finish each meal dreaming of what we are going to be having at the next. My husband is the cook and even though our children are 20 and 17 now, he likens us all to chicks in the nest, beaks open wide hungrily calling for the next morsel. But we’re really not into plates piled high with processed food, it’s food quality that counts for us. So one of the highlights for us in the calendar is Hampshire Food Festival. From the 1st July to the 2nd August venues across the area hold workshops, demonstrations, tours, tasters and special menus to celebrate the best of Hampshire food and drink. The award-winning Hampshire Food Festival will be in its 15th year in 2015 and last year attracted over 295,000 visitors. Many events, which are all held at numerous different locations across Hampshire, are free or low-cost, and there is plenty for adults, children and families. Mel and I were invited to the press launch day last year (unfortunately too late to tell you about it here) and had the most wonderful few hours sampling some of the producers’ wares. Chutney, ice-cream, cakes, cheeses, wines and beers…mmm, my mouth is watering just writing about it. I promise you I’m not just saying it to get another press invite, so much of what we tried was a league above the mass-produced versions.

LIFE BEGINS
Care Home Conundrum: Responding to a Relative’s Complaints By Kate McLelland When I visited my 92-yearold mother at her residential care home recently, she wasn’t in a good mood. Her purse was missing and she was convinced that the cleaners were to blame: “They’ve stolen it! And I had thirty pounds in there.”
Although I checked her handbag, rifled through her chest of drawers, searched in the laundry basket and even bent down to peer under the bed, the purse was nowhere to be seen. It wasn’t until she stood up, ready to accompany me to the manager’s office, that I realised she had been sitting on it all the time. This story will undoubtedly be familiar to many people with an elderly relative living in residential care. It’s often hard to know what to do when someone who may be suffering from confusion or mild dementia complains about a care issue. Should you take their concern seriously or just put it down to their age and mental condition?
Moira’s decision to check out her aunt’s complaint – no matter how far-fetched it sounded – was undoubtedly the right course of action. Confusion in elderly people can lead them to make false accusations but the same confusion also makes it easy for care workers to get away with poor standards of care and sometimes, actual abuse.
Sending out a signal
Moira Wilson from Cumbria was worried when her elderly aunt kept insisting that a young male, carer – Jack - was bothering her. Her aunt told her that Jack had said he loved her and often stood at the foot of the bed, watching her.
My mother – who is almost blind and has limited mobility – gets help with showering twice a week at her nursing home. When, on a number of occasions, she told me that she hadn’t been washed “Because the shower isn’t working”, I began to be suspicious. On some days she had her shower as usual and on others it mysteriously refused to work: what’s more, it seemed more likely to break down at times when a particular carer was there.
“The home had a good reputation so I didn’t like to complain,” says Moira. “But you hear all these stories about elderly abuse and it played on my mind. I thought she’d probably imagined
All it took was a friendly email followed by a brief chat with the manager. After that, the problem disappeared and mum has enjoyed regular showers ever since.
Better safe than sorry
6
it, but I had to be sure. To my great relief the manager told me that they had no male carers currently working there.”
Sometimes that’s all it takes to sort out a problem: the very act of making an enquiry can signal to staff that are not pulling their weight that their actions are being monitored. If the problem is not easily resolved then your emails will provide a written record in the event that the dispute escalates.
New legislation to combat abuse The charity Action on Elder Abuse describes abuse as: “A single or repeated act or lack of appropriate action, occurring within any relationship where there is an expectation of trust, which causes harm or distress to an older person.” Recently new legislation has been introduced in response to the Mid-Staffs and Winterbourne View abuse cases. The Care Act 2014 comes into force in two
stages, between April 2015 and April 2016, providing a new statutory basis for safeguarding vulnerable adults and making it easier to prosecute managers who have allowed an abusive culture to exist in their organisations. The public will also be able to see ‘Ofstedstyle’ ratings for hospitals and care homes so they can make comparisons between organisations and services. The Act also introduces a new, lower threshold for lodging a complaint with a local authority where abuse is suspected. An official enquiry can now be triggered if there is a “reasonable cause to suspect” abuse and this means that problems can be reported much earlier, before they lead to serious physical harm or longterm mental distress.
Elite Lift Solutions Making Access Easy
The right time to complain When an older person swaps their own home for a residential care setting, they will inevitably have minor niggles about the care they are receiving. These comments may be just a way of letting off steam, but it’s important to keep listening. If you detect that an issue is causing real anxiety or distress, then you must act. If your relative is able to explain the problem, you should encourage and support them as they speak to the care supervisor or manager. If not, don’t be afraid to approach these people yourself: a good care home should welcome your feedback. Making a complaint is never entirely easy, but it’s a small price to pay if it means that someone you love will receive better care and attention in future.

And Another Thing... by Tom Hughes Waiting to board the plane for our weekend in Nice, my breathing became shallow, my hands felt clammy and my heart began to race. But it wasn’t the terror of being entombed in a silver tube burning gallons of kerosene in an illogical attempt to defy gravity, rather it was my other flying phobia - a brat sat in the seat behind. After our furious dash across the tarmac elbowing non-priority boarders out of the way (we’d paid three quid extra to be treated like VIPs you see), we stored our luggage and settled into our seats. As Sarah began debating which variety of microwaved toasty to scald her mouth with, I commenced my nervous fidgeting. I craned my neck, scanning for infants. “Tom, just relax. We will be off in a minute.” “Look, there’s one coming now, and it’s getting nearer.” “They seem a perfectly nice family to me.” “It’s not Mum and Dad I’m worried about, it’s that red faced urchin I don’t like the look of.” The smug thirty-something parents scanned the row numbers as they squeezed themselves inexorably nearer. Thirty one, thirty two, thirty....three - there, 16
perfect. And where do you think they ended up? You know it brother. The smiling cabin crew snapped the overheads shut and fussed everyone into their places as the Irish lilt of the pilot’s voice reassuringly purred our route over the PA system. I closed my eyes. Maybe the kid with E numbers smeared over his sticky intemperate mush would be perfectly behaved, maybe he would just nod off in his Mummy’s arms? What did it matter that he was directly behind my head? The flight was short, it didn’t… thump! Oh no, we hadn’t even taken off and it had started. Thump!
slumber. I closed my eyes and tried to join the little darling. Unfortunately, my attempt at a cat nap was shattered by the racket from the well-padded lady in the seat next to mine. Her vast paw swirled inside her plastic cashew tub, like Trevor Brooking choosing the FA Cup quarter finalists. Finally content with her haul, she pulled yet another catch of nuts from her bucket. Her powerful elbow, nudging me with each swirl, was like a JCB digger excavating a drain. As she daintily tossed nuts into her pie hole with all the skill of a serial grazer, I leaned over to Sarah and whispered,
It isn’t the actual kick that drives you insane, it’s the anticipation of the tiny toes tapping the back of your seat that’s so unbearable.
“Do you think she’s coming to Nice to sample the gastronomy? (Nudge).
“Tom, just ignore the little chap, we’ll be there before you know it, read your guide to Nice.”
“Good!” (Nudge).
“I am trying to ignore it (thump), but it’s not easy when you have parents who can’t control their blasted kid (thump).” “Tom! Shush, they’ll hear you!” “Good!”(Thump). As the big tin bird eased herself into the stratosphere, the blonde terror behind succumbed to fatigue and fell into a fitful
“Shush Tom, she’ll hear you.” Then thankfully, she nodded off. A moment’s pause, then inevitably, the snoring began. Her huge proboscis making a noise like a gnu with sinus trouble Zzzzzzphhh! This terrible cacophony, apart from deafening me, roused the little cherub sitting behind. And off we went again! Thump! “Right, that’s it, I’m going to say something!”
“Tom! Please, we’re nearly there!” “I’m sorry Sarah but this is ridiculous (thump). Excuse me, I’m sorry to bother you, but can you not control you child? I’m not bothered but my wife is getting very angry.” “Tom!” Sarah squeezed her head next to mine through the little gap between the head rests. With our faces squashed together, we must have looked quite alarming. She tried to smile, but the glare from the brat’s Mother was enough to make her retreat. Sat back in her seat, Sarah’s weapon of choice (elbow) was immediately deployed to painful effect. “How dare you bring me into it.” (Dig) “Ow! I...wanted to present a united front?” (Thump, Zzzzz) “In future Tom, leave me out of your squabbles please.” “Whatever you say dear and by the way, this is going to bruise.” “Good! And so will this one, hopefully!” (Dig).

Should I start my business from scratch or buy an existing one? Investing in a “going concern” brings the security of trading history, established customers, suppliers and staff who already have relationships with your customers. On the downside, you have to pay for it. While starting a business from scratch gives the owner a completely blank canvass, there are significant hidden start-up costs not to mention a high degree of risk. Found empty premises of the right size, location, rent and lease terms? Are the premises are approved for your intended use? All commercial premises are classified by your local authority’s Planning Department and
planning consent will be needed if you want to change the current permitted use. The application process will take at least 8 weeks and you will have to pay £385 just to find out if your proposed use will be permitted. As a rough guide, florist shops, hairdressers and sandwich bars are classified as A1. Restaurants, snack bars and cafés selling hot food for consumption on the premises are A3. Hot food takeaways such as Fish & Chip shops, pizza and burger bars are A5. Will your premises need new flooring, lighting and heating? Have you sourced and worked out the cost of all the essential equipment? There are strict
Health & Safety laws protecting staff and customers - non-slip floors, hand wash stations, disabled access and staff rest rooms, for example. Your business plan will identify how long it takes to hit the monthly sales and profit targets needed to cover your monthly rent, rates, insurance, utilities and staff wages. Don’t forget that on top of these fixed monthly costs there is also the question of risk. What guarantee is there that your customers will support your new business within your estimated time scale?

HOBBIES
The Art of the Pen: Learning Calligraphy By Kate McLelland
20
The word “calligraphy” is a combination of the Greek words for “beauty” and “writing”, but calligraphy is very much more than just “beautiful writing”: it’s an ancient visual art form, practised for thousands of years, that continues to attract admiration and interest today.
These days you’ll find calligraphic scripts appearing on wedding and event invitations, testimonials, birth and death certificates and announcements. You may also see it used in religious art, font design and typography, graphic design, stone inscriptions and memorial documents.
The printing press was developed in Europe in the mid-15th century but before that time the knowledge of the Western world was painstakingly written by hand on natural materials such as stone, clay tablets and animal skins.
It is estimated that there are up to 50 professional scribes working in Britain today including Paul Antonio (www.paulantonioscribe. com) who writes for a list of clients that includes television companies, upmarket jewellers and corporate events organisers.
Thanks to the development of parchment - a more sophisticated writing surface made of stretched and treated calf or sheep hides - our medieval ancestors were able to create beautiful manuscripts that have survived up to the present day. For early calligraphers the beauty and expressiveness of the writing was just as important as the meaning of the words themselves and this led to the creation of illuminated books like The Book of Kells, created around AD 800, which was skilfully embellished with gold leaf and vivid paintings.
Calligraphy is a popular hobby and there are plenty of online resources available to help you learn, from YouTube ‘how to’ videos to step-by-step guides. You can find some helpful tips to get you started on the website www.calligraphyforbeginners. com but if you prefer to take lessons with a tutor it may be worth popping into your local library to ask about adult education classes. Alternatively the Calligraphy and Lettering Arts Society publishes a list of UK tutors on their website (www.clas. co.uk). You’ll need some fairly basic equipment to start out: a set of pens with nibs of different sizes (costing approximately £20), pencils, a ruler, a soft rubber for
erasing guidelines, some ink (or ink cartridges) and a quantity of high quality, ink-friendly paper. As you’re likely to spend considerable time practicing and writing, it’s important that you make yourself as comfortable as possible, so make sure that you are sitting near a source of natural light with your back well supported at a desk or table of suitable height. It will take many months of practice and study to develop a good technique, but it will be worth it in the end when you are able to transform mundane items such as Christmas cards, invitations and place settings into attractive keepsakes. Even medieval monks (who had to write for hours on end) were not without complaint. Monks often wrote notes in the margins of illuminated manuscripts and comments range from comic observation (“Oh, my hand!”) to seething frustration: “New parchment, bad ink: I say nothing more.” Although learning your craft can be hard work, thankfully these days we don’t have to spend hours creating parchment pages or sharpening quill pens in order to create something unique and beautiful. Just putting pen to paper is enough to turn simple words into works of art.

Who Dreamt That One Up? Iain Betson Asks What’s In A Name? In the seventies, car names conjured up far flung places of style, with sun kissed beaches and rolling countryside. Ford were masters at this: Cortina, Capri, and Granada, although let’s brush over the Escort. Then they completely lost it with the likes of Ka and Mondeo and Probe. British Leyland had the lame offerings of Marina (it’s a car not a boat, but it should have sunk without trace all the same), Allegro (it was hardly quick), or Dolomite (more like Termite). But the Japanese have cornered the weird name market starting with The Bongo Friendee and the Suzuki Mightyboy. From Toyota: The Lucinda Joyful Canopy (it has two sunroofs apparently) and from Mitsubishi the Cyborg-R. Europe, anxious not to be left out, entered VW with its Golf Club and Golf Driver. After that they decided to stay with a simple, descriptive name, so came up with Bora. Vauxhall/Opel had a go as well. There is an urban myth circulating that amongst Spanish speaking countries the Nova enjoyed poor sales as, translated, it means “No Go”. The Koreans unleashed a whole raft of silly, inappropriate or misunderstood monikers: Hyundai “Accent” - nothing wrong with that per se, except the script style typeface at a quick glance looks like “effluent”. From Kia: The Cee’d (don’t forget the apostrophe!) Hyundai again: The Pony - never a truer word said. But it won’t end there, because coming over the horizon are the Chinese. With a manufacturing industry geared to produce just about everything, mass car export is just a matter of time and with it some more silly names.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Justin Friel feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving
people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Romsey & North Baddesley area and Justin is finding that his
approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve
done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Justin a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Cycling Challenge If cycling is your sport and you’d like to combine a fantastic day out with other cyclists, with the bonus of raising money for charity, put the 27th June in your diary. The Solent Coasts Cycling Challenge is 66 mile circular route which follows the Hampshire and Isle of Wight coasts. With stunning views over the Solent, there will be especially fine views of the yachts competing in the Round the Island Race. Although there are off road sections, there are alternative routes for “road” bikes. Included within the registration fee are tickets for six cross Solent and local ferries. This fun day out raises money (riders are asked to gain minimum sponsorship of £125) for the UK humanitarian aid charity Hope and Aid Direct. Volunteers within the charity fundraise and collect donated aid which is then taken personally to families living in extreme poverty and to victims of disasters both in the UK and abroad. So why not have a great day out and raise money for a worthwhile cause. More information and online registration can be found at: www.solentchallenge.org.uk 38

GARDENING
Making a Pest of Themselves by Pippa Greenwood www.pippagreenwood.com
They might be small but aphids - widely known as greenfly and blackfly - are one of the most common and widespread garden pests, with more than five hundred different species found in the United Kingdom alone. Greenfly and blackfly vary in colour, from green or black to grey, yellow, pink, brown or khaki. The majority are about 2mm long Most damage is done throughout spring and summer but there are aphids feeding somewhere pretty well throughout the year. In sheltered parts of your garden or in greenhouses and conservatories, some can be found even during the cooler winter months. They can breed rapidly and this is often done asexually or without need of a male. For much of the year females are predominant and give birth to huge numbers of genetically identical offspring. The symptoms they cause include leaf yellowing or other brightly coloured discolouration, puckering, poor growth and stunting. The plant sap on which the aphids feed has an extremely high 42
sugar content; in fact it is so sugary that the aphids cannot digest it all, so their excreta is very sticky and sugary. This is called ‘honeydew’ and you may have noticed it beneath aphidinfested plants. Because it is so sugary, honeydew attracts harmless but unattractive black ‘sooty moulds’. On roses there are several species of aphid which may attack, often forming dense colonies on shoot tips, new leaf growth and flower buds. These aphids are mostly green, pinkish or yellowish in colour and up to 3mm long. If vegetables are more your thing then you may see the black bean aphid as it forms dense colonies especially at the shoot tips and beneath the leaves of broad beans in the spring. If you pinch out the aphid-encrusted shoot tips on beans the problem is often solved. Another common one is the woolly aphid which attacks apple trees and is also often seen on ornamental Malus such as crab apples, pyracantha and cotoneaster. Colonies of the aphid covered with white, waxy, fluffy fibres develop on the bark, especially near pruning cuts on older stems, or on younger stems where they also cause swellings
on the stem. It is pretty well impossible to garden without aphids causing some grief – the best you can do is to reduce their numbers. Encouraging naturally occurring predators such as blue tits, ladybirds, hoverflies and lacewings will all help. In some situations it is also worth introducing biological controls and these work especially well in an enclosed area such as a greenhouse or conservatory. Aphid predators such as the larva of the midge Aphidoletes and even ladybirds, can all be purchased, as can the tiny parasitic wasp Aphidius. Ladybirds (available from my website, www. pippagreenwood.com) are perfect for using on aphid outbreaks anywhere in the garden from pots and borders to hanging baskets and hedges. The great thing with these is that, once established they will start to breed and add to the natural ladybird population. There are a number of different chemicals (including organic or ‘green’ ones such as those based on fatty acids or plant oils) available for controlling aphid pests too, but not all are suitable for use on every plant, so check the label carefully before buying or using, and always follow the instructions carefully.
