Pixie Lott To Star In Truman Capote’s Breakfast At Tiffany’s 25th - 30th April • Mayflower Theatre Box Office: 02380 711811 • www.mayflower.org.uk The first UK and Ireland tour of Breakfast at Tiffany’s, the classic tale of Holly Golightly written by Truman Capote and brought to life so memorably by Audrey Hepburn in the 1961 film, will be coming to Mayflower Theatre as part of a UK tour and prior to a West End run. The novella has been adapted for the stage by Pulitzer Prize-winning Finalist and Tony and Olivier Award-winning playwright Richard Greenberg (Take Me Out, Three Days of Rain), and contains memorable songs from the era as well as original music by Grant Olding (One Man, Two Guvnors). Pixie Lott will star as Holly Golightly.

“The goal of this version is to return to the original setting of the novella, which is the New York of the Second World War, as well as to resume its tone – still stylish and romantic, yes, but rougher-edged and more candid than people generally remember,”

Richard Greenberg explained. “Capote was a great writer and a natural maker of plots and Breakfast at Tiffany’s has a drive that makes it very alluring to dramatise.”

Breakfast at Tiffany’s will be directed by Nikolai Foster, the Artistic Director of Curve Leicester, as part of his inaugural season for the company, with production design by Matthew Wright (La Cage Aux Folles).

Pixie Lott said, “I am so excited to play Holly Golightly in Breakfast at Tiffany’s on tour and in my first West End play. I absolutely love her style, and free spirit; she has always been an icon to me and I can’t wait to bring my own personality to the role. Alongside music, I’ve always wanted to be in a play, and getting the opportunity to be in one of my all-time favourites and play this fabulous character is a dream come true.”

I started my first local magazine like this one, in Chandlers Ford back in 2004. Like many small businesses starting out, I couldn’t afford staff so I was a Jack-of-all-trades, one-woman industry.

I still had small children at home then, so in addition to running the family, I had to quickly become competent in advert design, article writing, selling, accounts and I even carried out the physical door to door distribution myself. And yes sometimes I’d be doing two or three of those things at once e.g. child in a pushchair while I did deliveries.

It didn’t take long before I outsourced the things that took me too much time or that I wasn’t very good at. Deliveries door-to-door was first to go and now we do everything either with our wonderful team of helpers, or using RoyalMail for the more rural areas. Advert and magazine design followed shortly afterwards - creativity just isn’t me – and as a result the business flourished.

This was a valuable lesson and at home we make an effort to recognise each family member’s strengths and weaknesses, and ensure that responsibility for elements of running the house goes to those best at the job.

It still leaves gaps though. There are some jobs we are all rubbish at, or even if capable, none of us want to do it (meaning it doesn’t get done). Then of course there are the jobs for which you don’t have the correct tools. We’ve never cleaned or laid a carpet, tried to fix our own appliances, done anything that involves plumbing or electrical or serviced our own cars. And it’s no coincidence that you can find professionals to do all of these jobs – and more - in this magazine!

Vertical Cover With Climbers

If the boundaries of your garden are uninteresting or drab, then it is time to think about some vertical gardening. Upright surfaces are itching to be clothed in glorious climbers or wall shrubs, and if you have several vertical sites then so much the better.

A visit to your local garden centre will reveal a plentiful supply of suitable plants. Start by looking at the surface you have, the size, the direction it faces and the amount of sun or shade the plants growing on the wall or fence are likely to receive. Soil type is important as the plant you choose must be suited to the site.

Some climbers are quite quick growing and will look good later this year, and improve as the years pass. Many provide strong colour and others will be a useful backdrop for the garden as a whole.

Most buildings can have climbers grown against them, so if you have an unsightly shed, garage or even a fairly uninteresting looking back to your house, 8

then consider erecting some sort of support system on which to grow your climbers.

Break up the monotony of a long stretch of wall with a range of different plants, and make a tall, narrow building seem broader by only allowing them to reach the height of the first floor. A climbing hydrangea, Hydrangea petiolaris, or self-clinging plants such as ivies are ideal, but make sure the mortar on your wall is in good shape before planting.

Climbers are best planted in open ground as they tend to have sizeable root systems. If grown in containers you must re-pot regularly and ultimately plan to use a big container such as a half barrel. Use a loam-based potting compost and add extra grit for drainage, and place a deep layer of crocks at the base of the container. Add controlled release fertilizer granules to the compost, to ensure that plants get adequately fed for the first few months. A triangular or V-shaped trellis panel at the back will give initial support for the plant to climb up before moving on to your wall or fence. Tie the top section of the trellis into the wall or fence, so that it does not rock about.

For ground planting, dig a large

hole at least 18 inches (45 cm) from the wall or fence and incorporate plenty of compost or well rotted manure. Soak the plant’s root ball and place in the hole, ideally at a 45 degree angle so that it leans towards the wall, then spread out the roots and plant. If your climber came already attached to bamboo canes, untie the stems from any central stake and train the best looking shoots towards your new support system, using the bamboo canes to help it on its way. Keep climbers well watered, particularly if they are on or near a sunny wall.

Any good garden centre will have a range of plants, but here are some suggestions: Vigorous climbers for a quick effect: Actinidia chinensis; Akebia quinata; Clematis montana; Clematis montana ‘Rubens’; Vitis coignetiae Climbers for clay soils: Campsis; Celastrus scandens; Clematis; Ivies; Golden hop; Climbing hydrangea; Honeysuckles (most); Vitis coignetiae Climbers for an alkaline or chalky soil: Actinidia kolomikta; Akebia quinata; Clematis; Ivies; Climbing hydrangea; Jasminum officinale; Honeysuckles; Trachelospermum jasminoides

The Fast Growing ‘Cult’ of Small Things When 89-year-old Nora Boll recently sold her collection of over 30 dolls’ houses, the auction sale sparked huge interest in the national media, bringing together collectors and dealers from all over the country.

Nora, whose mother started the collection in 1925, had amassed hundreds of items over the years, including miniature chandeliers, little curtains made from parachute silk and even tiny rolls of toilet paper.

John Anderson of auctioneers Anderson and Garland, who managed the sale, commented: “There is something of a cult hobby based on dolls’ houses and furniture”. He went on to add that in his experience a piece of miniature furniture such as a chest of drawers can sell at auction for more than its full-size counterpart.

All grown up Collecting dolls’ houses, furniture and accessories is clearly no longer just a children’s pastime.

For serious hobbyists it’s an activity that allows for different specialties and interests, from kitting out period dolls’ houses in accurate historical detail to creating chic, contemporary interiors.

Fostering, Making The Right Choice For You You’ve decided to discover more about the rewards of fostering, so here are few guidelines to help you.

FOSTERING AGENCIES There are different types of fostering providers, including private companies, charities and local authorities. All will appear similar so look closely at each offering.

APPLICATION PROCESS Your initial enquiry should be responded to swiftly and an appointment arranged to visit you at your home. During the visit they should explain in detail about the challenges and rewards of fostering, the application and assessment process, and answer all

your questions.

You’re going to be looking after vulnerable children so it’s important that all the necessary checks are completed. This is a detailed process and usually takes about 6-8 months, however some agencies take less time.

Consider the values and ethics of the provider and the culture they promote.

TRAINING YOU Every agency will provide basic training in fostering, but consider those that go further by encouraging and helping you develop a career path in fostering.

Ensure that all the training offered is fully funded by them, that you receive independently accredited qualifications and they have the professional expertise to ensure you acquire the skills, confidence and understanding to make a difference to the lives of the children you foster.

Trash to Treasures in Romsey Abbey From 23 February to 19 March, Transition Town Romsey are staging this event at Romsey Abbey to challenge the way we look at ‘waste’, and show how everyday waste materials can be recycled and up-cycled to make beautiful and useful objects.

On display will be examples of recycled objects from a number of countries, along with information about how people around the world make a living from other people’s waste.

Free workshops will be run by local community artists and organisations; here’s what’s confirmed so far (open to schools and groups on weekdays).

You will be able to make jewellery out of junk, paper crafts from old books, new clothing from

old and decorative objects from plastic bags. Bring an old item of clothing or other object, such as a bag, to up-cycle at ‘Trash Fashion’or bring your old plastic bags to make decorative objects at ‘Plastic Fantastic’. Duran Duran Duran Duran returned to the music scene in 2015, with the single ‘Pressure Off’ and the album ‘Paper Gods’. The Evening Breeze’s Lucy Ambache caught up with bassist John Taylor and talked collaborations, mature touring and Glastonbury.

I hear you’re a fan of The Breeze?

I have found myself listening a lot and you guys are almost always playing something I like listening to.

Well this interview is going to go very well! <laughs> We have been loving playing ‘Pressure Off’. I watched the behind the scenes video and it’s great to see the musical brilliance of Duran Duran, Mark Ronson and Nile Rodgers working together. It really is quite something!

Yeah. We worked a lot with Nile in the eighties and it wasn’t until working with him on this song that we really appreciated what he brings to the room – and as a bass player, you just don’t get to play with musicians like him that often. And Mark’s a very different kind of guy – he’s like watching all the time. It was a great experience and nice to have something on the album that married the old eighties sounding Duran with the 36

contemporary Duran.

It’s sort of been updated into 2015 on the album.

That’s the job. You can’t just throw the baby out. You’ve got to hold onto the classic aspects but you’ve got to let in enough new energy so it sounds fresh and interesting. Otherwise you’ll just be preaching to the converted. With every album you do, you’ve got the opportunity to open things out a little bit. What ended up defining this album was the amount of featured artists we’ve got on it.

And that’s not usual for you?

Not at all. We like to think of ourselves as a closed shop – that’s what bands do - “we’re a gang, we’re all inclusive”. You look at the culture and what’s going on in music over the last few years and it’s all about features. You’ve got EDM and hip hop and they’re all about features. By the end of this album, we’d have anybody on it!

So you’re taking this album out on the road. Are you still up for this?

Are you ready to tour?

After spending two years in the studio, we’re like “get us on tour!”. You’ve got these two different experiences that make up doing what we do. There’s the introspective studio work where it’s like a ‘man cave’ and the touring balances it out.

I wouldn’t want to only be a

touring musician but I wouldn’t just want to be a studio musician either.

Is it going to be a bit more different for you guys? A bit more civilised?

We’re very civilised! I know what you’re getting at though. You just don’t have the energy to party like you used to. Now the energy just goes into making the show as great as it can be.

We’re very relaxed professionals and when you’re married and you’ve got families, it’s not like it was when you were in your twenties. But I would hope so too! I wouldn’t want to be me now doing what I was doing then – it would be pretty sad.

We’ll see you at Glastonbury 2016, right? It’s got to be, right?

Why has this not happened?

I don’t know. I’ve never had the opportunity to do the ‘hard sell’ but I’m sure one day we’ll get there. I’d better get down there and do the shmooze!

Tom and the boastful brother in law

by Tom Hughes @groomsdaybook My Dearly Beloved’s glance at the clock did not bode well. “Tom, isn’t it time you were in bed?”

“Can I finish my hot chocolate first please, Mother?”

“Well Tom, it’s nearly ten. You have to be at the airport at five.”

“Yes I know and then we’ve got to endure a whole week of it.”

“A whole week of what?”

“Your Kevin’s boasting.”

In 1991, Sarah’s spotty brother emigrated to Canada, where he grew up, married and made his fortune. Standing bleary-eyed in the airport multi-storey, I’d only just heaved Kevin’s matching luggage into the boot when it started. “Hey Tommy, are you still driving this old heap? I change my auto every two years, on the advice of my tax planner.”

“Really Kevin? How fascinating!”

The drive home (apart from some quite severe boasting about his trip to Dubai) was fairly uneventful.

Sarah greeted her brother warmly and once safely ensconced in the kitchen he finally - to everyone’s relief - stopped boasting about Dubai but started boasting about his house.

“I see you’ve upgraded your kitchen, Sis.” “Yes, we changed it last year, didn’t we Tom?” I opened my trap to have a mini boast all of my own, but was too slow out of the boasting blocks.

“It’s a pity this place isn’t big enough for an island. You see back home I have this huge island,” 42

“I bet it’s not as big as Richard Branson’s.”

“What’s that Tommy?”

A kick to the shin from Sarah was my first warning of the day. Then it was time for lunch. Back in the Mondeo we headed into town as Kevin thankfully left his island paradise behind and moved neatly onto his next subject - Kevin Junior” “Now that my boy is at Yale doing law, we have so many adjustments to make. OK $40,000 a year isn’t cheap, but when you have a gifted child, what can you do? How’s your Evan doing, Tommy?”

This was my cue for some desperate parental Top Trumping.

“Well funnily enough, he’s just taken his bar exams.”

Another kick from Sarah.

“Well what do you know? Maybe one day they’ll lock horns in front of a judge?”

“You never know Kevin, they just might.”

Then Kevin spotted a generic taxdodging coffee emporium. “Hey, let’s jump in here and grab a skinny latte. A taste from home!”

We had only just taken our seats when we were greeted by Evan, wearing a company polo shirt and a wide smile. “Hi Uncle Kev! We’ve all missed you! Hi Dad, I forgot to mention - I moved branches last week!”

Evan disappeared then returned with our order as I waited for the inquisition.

“Tom, I thought you said…”

“What? Oh Evan? Yeah. He’s qualified now. He’s a Barista.”

“A barrister?

“Yeah, like I say, he’s taken his bar exam and now he’s a Barista.”

“A…barrister?”

“Yeah, I just told you (now mumbling into my creamy hot chocolate) a…brrstrr.”

We sipped in silence. I waited for a kick from Sarah. But none came.

The week slipped by until it was time to say goodbye to Kevin. Back in the airport car park I heaved his matching luggage out of the boot. Through the grey drizzle we both looked out across at the retail park in the distance. “You see, in Canada, we have none of this constant awful weather - the summers are hot and the winters are snowy and cold, they’re perfect, I…” His voice trailed off. Wondering what was the matter, I caught his eye and blow me if the old chap wasn’t blubbering! “Kev, are you ok?”

“I miss England Tommy, and I miss my boy. You know something Tom, you’re a lucky guy.”

Driving back through the roadworks and the pouring rain I pulled onto the drive to see Sarah arguing with the man from the water board who was about to start digging up the pavement.

Well, I thought to myself, Kevin could keep his island and his money; after all, there’s no place like home…

RECIPE

Chicken In Red Wine Serves 4 This is a quick, easy and flavoursome way to serve chicken. Use a full-bodied red wine such as a Burgundy for the best flavour, although there is no need to buy a really pricy one!

Ingredients: •

2 tbsp olive oil

•

600g skinless chicken breast fillets, cut into chunks

•

225g button mushrooms

•

200g shallots, peeled

•

1 garlic clove, peeled and crushed

•

300ml red wine

•

200ml chicken or vegetable stock

•

2 tbsp sun-dried tomato puree

•

1 bay leaf

•

2tbsp cornflour

•

Sprigs of fresh parsley to garnish

•

Sautéed potatoes and steamed green beans, to serve

Ready in 1 hour 15 minutes

1.

Heat the oil in a large frying pan over a medium heat.

Add the chicken chunks and fry for 4-5 minutes, turning frequently until golden brown all over. Transfer to a plate with a slotted spoon.

2.

Add the button mushrooms and shallots to the pan and fry for 5 minutes until just beginning to brown. Add the garlic and fry for a further minute then return the chicken to the pan and stir in the red wine, stock, tomato puree and bay leaf.

3.

Bring to the boil then reduce the heat, cover and simmer gently for 25-30 minutes or until the chicken and onions are tender.

4.

Blend the cornflour and 2 tbsp water to a smooth paste then stir the paste into the pan. Simmer gently for further 2-3 minutes, stirring all the time, until the liquid has thickened. Serve with sautéed potatoes and steamed green beans and garnish with parsley sprigs.

This dish freezes well, so it’s worth doubling up the quantities to freeze away half for another day.

Allow to cool completely then spoon into a shallow freezerproof container and freeze for up to 2 months. Defrost thoroughly then reheat in a flameproof casserole until piping hot.

I’m seeking people with the MLQ (Summer) award willing to support Gold Duke of Edinburgh Expeditions in the UK for Chandlers Ford Scouts. Further training by the Scouts related to supervising a Duke of Edinburgh group will be provided. I am the Chandlers Ford Scouts DofE Gold Mentor and you would team up with me in supporting up to two groups each year. This would involve supervising four nights of practice and expedition in UK classified wild country with scout teams of 4 to 8 individuals.
