Hello and Welcome We often entertain our teenage children with stories of how life was when we grew up. Their favourite topic is tales of the world without computers and mobile phones, and of great amusement is the thought that the phone wouldn’t fit in your pocket. If you remember, because of the power they used, all mobile phones were fitted into cars. The first one I used which was truly mobile had a battery pack which was the size and weight of a large shoebox filled with lead. And the first laptop computer I was given by my employers wasn’t really portable…so heavy, it was at best ‘transportable’. So many people do say that it was a simpler world then, but having the ability to work from home, to stay in touch with friends and family, to buy online and have it delivered to my door and to find out almost anything I want to instantly is fantastic. One of the other things I love about the internet is that we can have a team of people working on the magazines and it doesn’t matter where they live. Our designer Heather is in Scotland, our
administrator Lauren lives in Kent and Marina, our short story illustrator, lives in Serbia. Still there is a limit. We all still need local tradespeople, gardeners, hairdressers, garages and – of course – someone to fix our computers when they go wrong. And that’s what this magazine is all about. A choice of services in one handy guide and two pages this month of events, for the days when you feel like interacting with the real world rather than just the virtual one! Tania PS: Following on from my article in your last magazine, I have added more updates to my weight loss blog at www.discoveryourtoes.co.uk. DISCOVER MONTHLY FEATURE
Bring in the May One of the best indications that summer is about to arrive is when Britain’s hedgerows explode with the pink and white blossoms of the hawthorn. The hawthorn is one of those quintessentially English trees: although quietly unobtrusive for most of the year, it bursts into spectacular life in the late spring, with flowers crowded so densely together they look like snowfall. In the autumn it glows with clusters of red berries. No wonder the tree features so strongly in ancient folklore. The old name for hawthorn was “may” and the flower of the may tree has long been considered a symbol of hope. It even gave its name to The Mayflower, the famous ship that sailed from England in 1620, transporting a stalwart band of pilgrims to build a new life in America. As its alternative name suggests, hawthorn was central to ancient May Day celebrations. The old Celtic festival of May Day was known as ‘Beltane’ after the Celtic god of light, or the sun. The beginning of summer was also celebrated in Ancient Rome at the Floralia festival (dedicated to the flower goddess Flora), which took place at roughly the same time. May Day celebrations in Britain were probably a hybrid of both traditions mixed up with Druidic tree worship, and the introduction of Christianity did little to dispel these pagan traditions. On the first day of May, villagers would wake at daybreak and roam through the countryside, gathering flowers and hawthorn twigs to decorate their houses. A maypole – usually the trunk of a birch tree, stripped of its branches and decorated with ribbons and flowers - was set up in the middle of the village green. In olden times maypoles were constructed with three rings on the top - the highest and smallest was made of hawthorn. The community danced around the pole, singing
6
traditional songs, while the men of the village performed Morris dances and the prettiest girl, dressed in floral garlands, was crowned Queen of the May. Occasionally a May King was also chosen, and the pair ruled over the festivities. In Elizabethan times, the king and queen were given the names ‘Robin Hood’ and ‘Maid Marian’. These celebrations were derived from ancient fertility rituals and the ‘greenwood marriages’ that took place provide clear evidence of this. Often young girls came home from their country rambles with more than a garland of flowers. As one observer wrote: “I have hearde of tenne maidens whiche went to set May, and nine of them came home with childe.” May Day festivities reached their height in England during the Middle Ages but in 1644 the Puritans passed a law which made them illegal. This attempt to repress the celebrations eventually failed, mainly because they were too deeply rooted in rural culture. When the monarchy was restored some years later and Charles II came to the throne, people all over the country put up maypoles as a sign of loyalty to the crown. For the next two hundred years the old customs continued, but interest in May Day traditions began to fade. They enjoyed a brief revival in the Victorian era but any connection to fertility rites was deliberately overlooked and maypole dancing was reduced to an innocent children’s game. Sadly by this time the hawthorn – once the embodiment of hope for the coming summer – had also lost its significance, becoming just another tree in the British landscape. By Kate McLelland

Awbridge, Dunbridge & Mottisfont Walk Walk Distance 4.2 miles A downloadable pdf of the walk and enlarged map is availabe at www.discovercommunity.co.uk
Historical Notes The lake at Awbridge Danes was excavated in the 1920s to provide work for the local unemployed, each man being paid one shilling (10p) a day and a loaf of bread. Roman occupation of the area is confirmed by tiles, pottery and coins being found at Awbridge House, dating from the late roman period of AD 307. The names Danes Road and Awbridge Danes record the presence of Danish occupation of the area, possibly from the 11th or 12th centuries. Mottisfont church is a Grade I listed building originally of 12th century origin that initially claimed pastoral responsibility for Mottisfont, Lockerley and Broughton. Its earliest parts predate Mottisfont Abbey. Among its artefacts, the church contains a 17th century clock which has no face and no pendulum. Its movement derives its energy solely from hung weights and a bell is rung on the hour. Which hour is of course anybodies guess. The modern road that runs between Awbridge, Lockerley, the Tytherleys, Broughton and the A30 was originally a turnpike {toll) road in the mid 18th century. Similarly, the short stretch of road from East Dean joining this road was also a toll road.

At a track crossroads, keep straight on. • Cross the bridge over the railway line and bear left along a signed path with the railway to your left. • Cross a footbridge over the River Dun and turn through a kissing gate. • Walk through a field with woodland to your left. Cross a stile at the field boundary and keep straight on. • With a cemetery on your right, follow a gravel track onto tarmac bearing left with the church on your right. ...Continued on page 12

Professional Tree Surgery & Hedge Trimming Sound advice from Josh Laurence of J.L. Tree Care It is the time of year when we turn our attention once more to our gardens and trees. But does your tree have a TPO?
WHAT IS A TREE PRESERVATION ORDER?
Tree Preservation Orders, also known as TPOs were introduced in the late 1940s to enable Local Planning Authorities to protect important trees. The orders can be made on single trees, groups of trees, areas of trees or whole woodlands. TPO laws prohibit the cutting down, uprooting, topping, lopping, wilful damage or wilful destruction of trees without prior consent from your Local Planning Authority.
WHY YOU SHOULD CHECK IF YOUR TREE HAS A TPO?
Pruning or cutting down protected trees without the appropriate consent can result in prosecution and a maximum fine of £20,000 for each offence. If you are unsure if your tree has a TPO or if you are living in a Conservation Area, always check first with your local council.
Josh Laurence of J.L. Tree Care Proficiency Test Council Certificate). You could even ask to see the Contractors NPTC card which is proof of competency in a range of skills, including the safe use of chainsaws, chippers, stump grinders, tree climbing and aerial rescue. Choosing a Tree Surgeon wisely will result in your trees being safely and expertly kept in top condition. Josh Laurence, J.L Tree Care ‘Professional Tree Surgery & Hedge Trimming’ Tel: 02380 862975 / 07919886166
WHAT TO DO IF YOUR TREE DOES HAVE A TPO?
You can usually still carry out work to your tree as long as you first submit a written application to the Authority. These application forms, along with helpful guides are found on your local council’s websites. After you have submitted your application the council will view the tree and make a decision within 6-8 weeks, informing you what work is permitted or not. A good Arborist will guide you through the process of TPO applications, advising on the correct terms and tree surgery methods required, increasing the likelihood of you receiving prompt permission from your local authority.
CHOOSING A PROFESSIONAL TREE SURGEON
Tree surgery is a highly skilled and dangerous operation, don’t be tempted to do the work yourself, invest in employing a professional Arborist (Tree Surgeon). Ensure you choose an experienced and insured contractor who is fully qualified in Arboriculture, holding a NPTC (National F o r c o m m u n i t y i n f o r m a t i o n v i s i t w w w. d i s c o v e r c o m m u n i t y.c o. u k

DISCOVER LOCAL HISTORY
Southampton Maritime Festival The Hampshire and Wight Trust for Maritime Archaeology on behalf of the Southampton Heritage Federation is delighted to announce the Southampton Maritime Festival, taking place on Sunday 5th and Monday 6th May 2013 at the Ocean Cruise Terminal, Southampton. This exciting new event promises to celebrate the long and proud maritime heritage of Southampton in style. Never before has an event of this scale been seen in Southampton! The Festival will be taking over the docks and water within Dock Gate 4 to bring you a whole host of activities and attractions that hark back to the Second World War with a 1940s theme. There will be a wide range of historic vessels in attendance, including a flotilla of Dunkirk Little ships, numerous displays and demonstrations and even a Lancaster bomber fly over. With so much going on, it’ll be sure to keep the whole family entertained! A highlight of the festival will be the arrival of the Steam Tug Challenge as she returns to Southampton, fresh from her recent Heritage Lottery Funded refit. Challenge, a veteran of the Second World War, will be accompanied by a flotilla of Dunkirk Little Ships. His Royal Highness Prince Michael of Kent, patron of the Dunkirk Little Ships Restoration Trust, will also attend. Heritages buses will provide a park and ride service to the docks from the city centre throughout the event and the SS Shieldhall will offer cruises up and down Southampton Water. Amongst the numerous displays and demonstrations over the course of two days will be Second World War re-enactors, vintage Rolls Royce cars, and the Historical Diving
18
Society demonstrating ‘Hard Hat’ or Standard Diving Gear. Visitors will be able to try their hand at controlling Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs), see the Pufferspheres from the National Oceanography Centre, and learn more about Southampton’s historic trams. They can explore the various exhibits and stalls of heritage organisations and traders or take a pit-stop at one of many eateries while enjoying the live music and entertainment. The fleet of historic vessels will be moored alongside the terminal, waiting to tell their colourful stories. As well as being a fantastic day out for all the family, Southampton Maritime Festival will raise awareness of the city’s rich seafaring traditions. The Hampshire and Wight Trust for Maritime Archaeology is urging local residents in particular to get involved; whether people wish to enjoy the attractions or join in as a valued volunteer, they can help make the festival an event for Southampton to be proud of. North Baddesley Village Day North Baddesley village day is a free day out for the family. It takes place on the recreation ground in North Baddesley on 18th May 2013. Bringing together charities, groups and businesses it is a great family day out, with arena events including the return of the popular Dog Dancing and Kids Rome petting farm, both kindly sponsored by the Parish Council. There are also several new events for this year. The very popular beer tent is kindly provided by The Bishop Blaize in Romsey. The event is not for profit, so any money made from our Grand Raffle will be donated to North Baddesley groups and charities. Last year the committee were able to donate to ÂŁ80 each to The Guides, The Village Hall Jubilee Garden and the Red Cross. In 2013 they will be supporting the Friends of North Baddesley Library.

DISCOVER THE BETTER LIFE
The Better Life The Better Life is the tales and observations of a London townie, who downshifted to Cornwall. A bit like the Good Life, but with the internet. It all started one morning in the kitchen, when Anne asked, “How would you feel about keeping chickens?” I didn’t answer right away. In the time we’ve been together I’ve learned the language of subtext. I finished my breakfast and replied, “When are we picking them up?” I wasn’t entirely averse to the idea of a little self-sufficiency. Who doesn’t have fond memories of The Good Life - and especially Felicity Kendal? Plus it’d be a chance to shed my townie upbringing and dispel that grim story my dad used to tell - the one about dispatching a chicken for the first and only time, where the head came off in in his hands and the headless chicken ran up the path. Stage one in Operation Chickadee was researching coops and chicken feed and, well, chickens really. There’s a lot to learn about chicken behaviour, the different breeds and their foibles. Having taken advice, we decided on hybrids, as they’re more reliable for eggs and point-of-lay birds for immediate production. We went upmarket with the coop, choosing an easy care metal and plastic affair from Omlet (yes, really!). Now all we needed to do was find the right chickens - and Anne was already on the case. The day after the chicken coop and run were installed in the front garden, we entered the mysterious world of farm supplies. Layers pellets, grit (for strong shells), straw and worming treatment - check. However, my suggestion that we buy jodhpurs as well fell on stony ground. Having located a poultry supplier, we headed out with an empty cat box and a pile of newspaper. The farmer led us to a densely populated barn and said, “Take your pick.” I don’t know exactly how Anne chose the chickens - which the farmer insisted were hens - but we went home with Sweet Pea (a Plymouth Rock / Maran)
30
and Pepperami (a Plymouth Rock / Rhode Island). The chickens were confined to barracks for a few days, to allow them to settle in and retrain the cat. Once they emerged, we noted the following: At least an egg a day! A huge reduction in the snail population. Sweet Pea failed to live up to her name, went broody and took it out on the cat (luckily it’s a very fast cat). The garden quickly came to resemble The Somme. Something had to be done because, unlike me, Anne is a passionate gardener. Plus, the round up in the evenings was time consuming. We fenced off one half of the garden and, after a few ‘great escapes’, augmented the fencing with extra bamboo canes in leaf, whereupon the chickens looked as if they were starring in their own episode of Tenko. Sweet Pea and Pepperami were both restful to watch and very entertaining. They performed chicken yoga wing stretching exercises. They played tug-of-war with snails and ‘I’ll have what she’s having’ tussles over worms, morning porridge and, on one unfortunate occasion, a wood mouse. Our neighbours relish the availability of fresh, local eggs and they enjoy the egg-laying serenade every morning. And the poultry poop makes great compost. No chickens were harmed in the making of this feature. My dad would be proud. Derek Thompson is a writer and humourist based in the West Country. Frustrated with how your PC or laptop is performing? We regularly get customers contacting us reporting that the computer they purchased years ago has become very slow and almost unusable. Sometimes in desperation and on advice from a friend or even their telephone/ broadband provider, they have run their system install disk and wiped the machine clean. The problem here is that whilst on occasion what is termed a format/reload is necessary in order to resolve system problems, it does wipe everything off of the hard drive, including all the saved documents such as letters, photographs and programs. But in the majority of cases it isn’t necessary to take that drastic a measure. The reason systems become slow are varied but more often than not it is simply the result of an accumulation of temporary/junk files, redundant registry items and memory sapping software. As each item of software updates (especially some internet security applications) the amount of disk space or memory required to run it gets more demanding and can end up making the system work much harder than it is capable of. There are good and bad utilities available on the internet that promise to ‘speed up your PC’ but some are in fact riddled with malware – particularly where they are offered free of charge - and end up causing more problems than they are worth. In over 90% of the cases that come into our workshop, we are able to carry out a cleanup of the system that the ordinary Windows tools fall short of. Also with RAM memory being so much cheaper, we can install additional modules to make the computer run much faster and more efficiently. By removing memory hungry software and replacing it with leaner alternatives (often free)
34
it is possible to ease the burden on your system even further and there are other useful tips and measures that can make a real difference to how your computer runs. So if you are frustrated with how your PC or laptop is performing, just remember that from time to time we all need a bit of looking after or an energy boost and it doesn’t always mean that if your computer is running slowly then it has to be replaced. DISCOVER SHORT STORY
Short Story The May Day Parade Cyril helped the May Queen and her two attendants climb onto the straw bails in the trailer. The girls, clutching posies of wild roses and gypsophila, looked lovely in their white dresses and floral crowns. “Hold on tight to the bailing twine,” Cyril repeated sternly. Ten years ago an attendant had not heeded his advice and that had been a sorry sight. Cyril clambered into the tractor and started the ignition. With a blast of fumes and noise, they left Glebe Farm and began the bumpy journey down the muddy track towards the main road, where the marching band were tuning up their instruments. Clouds were hanging over the village after last night’s heavy rain, but promised to burn off by lunchtime, when Cyril has plans to be sitting outside the Nag’s Head with a pint of bitter as his reward. As he pulled off the farm track the marching band fell into formation in front of them, and the parade began. Cyril followed the band up Chapel Lane. He took the job of chauffeuring the May Queen very seriously. He had even worn his best overalls for the occasion. People were out, lining the streets. The previous year, for the Jubilee, many villagers had worn masks of Her Majesty, and Cyril thought it was the strangest sight he had ever seen. But this year, things were different again. He could see folk squeezed onto the pavement ahead of him, waving their flags and cheering, but as the tractor approached, the flags drooped and the cheering fell silent. They frowned at him. Anyone would think they had never seen a May Day Parade before, and had no idea how to behave. “They can’t be from ‘round here”, Cyril thought. Mrs Cramp, from the Post Office, called something up to him. Her words were lost over the rumble of the engine, but her expression was not. “Poor gal looks peeved”, Cyril thought. “She’s thinking
36
the same thing as me – funny crowd”. As he turned towards the Village Green he slowed down so that everyone could have a good look at the trailer. The local school children had spent all morning decorating it with balloons, tissue paper flowers and bunting. A few young kids waved their flags, but most people just stood and stared. “Miserable bunch”, Cyril muttered to himself. He’d never seen such an unappreciative crowd. Finally he turned onto the Green. The Brass band started ‘When the saints go marching in’ and Cyril drove his precious cargo between the cream tea stall and the bouncy castle. He gave the horn a friendly peep and switched off the engine just as the marching band did one final turn. The music trailed off as though the trumpets had suddenly run out of air, which was an unusual way to end the song, Cyril thought. Straightening his cap, he jumped down from the tractor to attend to the May Queen. To his astonishment she wasn’t there. Nor were her two attendants, or the trailer and bails of straw. Somewhere between Glebe Farm and the Green the whole lot had vanished. The sun peeped shyly from behind the clouds just as, red faced and panting, the May Queen and her attendants came running onto the Green, their posies drooping and their dresses dripping with mud. There was a cheer of relief from the crowd and the band played ‘We’ll meet again’. The landlord of the Nags Head handed a crestfallen Cyril his pint. “Well done, lad”, he said, unable to stifle his laugh. “And for next year’s parade, try to remember to hitch the tractor to the trailer first”.
