Empty Nesting My youngest went off to Melanie Tinson & Tania Houston university in September, his sister already being there, leaving me and my husband with a part-time empty nest. I’ve heard some parents talk of devastation at children leaving; and others with delight at the freedom. We’re somewhere in the middle. We’re quite sad to see them go, and it does seem quiet without the comings and goings each day. But my goodness, life is simpler, more impulsive and considerably cheaper with just two of us to plan for and fund. I was able to look at this edition’s forthcoming ‘what’s on’ listings with a blank diary. I didn’t need to check on whether I was expected at a family meal, was being waited on for a lift somewhere or was going to have an uninvited tag-along hinting about what I could buy for them. Mind you having two at university does make a whopping dent in the family coffers, so I’ll be make a beeline for bargain and free events. Being on the edge of the New Forest means glorious autumn walks which cost nothing so that’ll definitely be on my list. If you have children yourself - of any age - you’ll know as soon as they can walk, your property will start to suffer. So that’s my other autumn plan – use the businesses in this magazine to get some home improvements underway knowing we have a chance of it staying pristine…till Christmas at least when the chaos will resume. Until next time.

INTERVIEW

The Maccabees Return to Southampton

Number 1 Album ‘Marks To Prove It’ Out Now

Exclusive:

Izzy Ewen of Discover Magazines interviews guitarist, Felix White

Left to right: Felix White, Sam Doyle, Orlando Weeks, Rupert Jarvis, Hugo White

The Maccabees break their three year silence with their eagerly anticipated self-produced 4th album with the recent explosive single ‘Marks To Prove It’.

What has been the best gig for you over the past ten years since your debut single came out? We’ve had some special ones. In Southampton we had some great early times at Lennons right through to the shows at the Guildhall. What has been your favourite venue or festival to play at and why? Brixton Academy in London holds a lot of meaning to us, having grown up watching bands there, and it still stands up as the best place for a show even having been round the world. Where do you retreat to when song writing? We’ve got a studio in Elephant where we do everything, write, record etc What is your favourite lyric you’ve written and sung to date? Probably not for us to decide Whose music do you listen to most on tour? I’ve got into a habit of listening to the Beta Band a lot. I just got into Dead Can Dance on the last tour too. Who would be your ideal band or artist to tour with? We’ve played or toured with a lot of them. We’ve talked with Foals about doing something together sometime this year which would be fun.

16 6

If you could have dinner with any singer dead or alive who would it be and why? Too many. But Joe Strummer probably. Any interesting musical collaborations in the pipeline? Just touring the record at the moment .... What are your hopes for next year professionally? I think this album is going to carry us to a few moments, just not sure exactly what they’ll be yet! Hoping there will be some special shows. Tell us what you will be releasing next and what we can look forward to from The Maccabees? The album is just out so we are into the idea of celebrating that at the moment and looking forward to the November Guildhall show. Beautiful place.

“Their best record yet” Q Magazine “A triumph” The Times “A beautifully crafted album” NME

The Maccabees will play at Southampton O2 Guildhall on Tue 24th November 2015

Dovetail Framing Where The Framer Comes To You!

Where the framer comes to you! Enjoy the benefits of: • Making framing choices in the comfort of your own home. • Wide range of mouldings and mount colours. • High quality, professional framing. • Free, no obligation quotations. • Free collection and delivery in the Romsey area.

Dovetail Framing For advice and to book your consultation please contact Jonathan Birch

Tel: 01794 341274 info@dovetailframing.co.uk www.dovetailframing.co.uk

It’s been a busy year for Dovetail Framing, which celebrates its first birthday on 1st November. This unique business provides customers with a visit from a framing expert who helps them to make frame and mount choices and then delivers the finished product direct to the customer’s home.

Jonathan Birch

Dovetail Framing is the brainchild of former Police Inspector Jonathan Birch of Awbridge, who ended a varied career as part of the team delivering security for the 2012 London Olympic Games. “After many years in such a demanding role, I was looking for both a change of direction and a creative challenge” says Jonathan. “Prior to joining the police I ran a successful framing business. I wanted to further develop my expertise in this area, while designing a business centred around the customer”. Dovetail Framing offers both convenience and the ability to make framing choices with reference to home décor and surroundings. Jonathan visits customers, including professional artists, in their homes, offices or studios, and spends as much time as necessary making sure they choose the right mount and frame. Once an order has been taken, items are taken to the workshop for completion and delivered back to the customer once finished. Visits are without obligation, and no extra charge is made for this service. As well as paintings, prints, drawings and certificates, Jonathan has also framed a number of more unusual items. These include record sleeves, fishing flies, football shirts, badges, medals, and even a bag of fairy dust! “One of my customers had organised a ‘Frozen’ party for his grand-daughter, which resulted in her receiving a certificate and a vial of ‘fairy dust’ in a bag” says Jonathan. “I hand-finished a frame in exactly the right colour to match, and displayed the certificate and the vial in a shadow box, much to her delight!” Jonathan is enthusiastic about the future. “I have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know my customers and bringing their projects to fruition and am looking forward to meeting many more in the coming year. Call me on 01794 341274 or visit the website at www.dovetailframing.co.uk and I’ll be happy to help”. 9

HOBBIES

Why Cards Are Still King When You Want To Play Fancy a game of Strip Jack Naked? Or maybe Black Maria? What about a quick hand of Snip Snap Snorum? If these activities sound strange you may be relieved to discover that they are all card games whose rules are now lost in the mists of time, but it’s probably no surprise to find that some games have fallen out of fashion over the centuries. What is surprising is that card games have managed to survive at all in this age of virtual gaming. The fact that card games have lasted into the 21st century speaks volumes about the enduring power of playing cards to fascinate and entertain us. It’s now widely believed that they were invented in China: some of the earliest references to card playing by the Chinese nobility date as far back as the 9th century. Because they were light and 10

easy to transport, traders carried decks of cards abroad and so the fashion rapidly spread to Egypt, Persia and India. Card games eventually reached Europe in the 15th century. During this period the Italians invented the Tarot deck, which saw an additional set of trump cards added to the standard deck. These were used as ordinary playing cards until the 18th century, when they also began to be used for fortune-telling. The Georgians and Victorians were keen card players and favourite games included Whist, Ecarte, Faro and Loo. In the early 20th century games such as Pontoon, Gin Rummy, Canasta and Contract Bridge became popular but the interest in card games began to fade in the second half of that century as television and other distractions tempted people to abandon their social gaming habits. It’s good to know that in spite of computers and the internet (or perhaps because of them) card gaming is once more growing in popularity, but in addition to online gaming, people are also coming together to play socially. As well as old favourites such as Poker and Bridge, there’s a huge interest in collectible card games, where players use specially

designed sets of playing cards and trade their cards during a game. You can find a list of local clubs at www.orcsnest.com/clubs. htm and www.ukgmn.co.uk or alternatively ask at your local library. Many pubs now host informal groups playing card games such as Cribbage or Poker, so it’s worth asking the landlord of your local pub if they have card playing evenings. If you can’t find a local group that meets your needs, you could consider setting up your own club. A pub or local café may be the ideal place to get together, but do check with the owner to see if they have any objections before setting up a meeting. This is particularly important if you want to play for money, as the premises may not be licensed for gambling. If you are joining – or starting – a club you’ll find it’s a good way to make new friends who share your passion. It’s also a great way to exercise your brain. So many different games … so many ways to play them. When you consider that all this potential can be found in just 52 pieces of printed paper, it’s no wonder that card games have managed to retain their appeal over thousands of years.

The “agency” secret that could double the number of enquiries on your property

Sheonah Marshall Branch Director Ewemove Southampton North 02380 007 500

www.ewemove.com/southamptonnorth

Most Estate Agents list houses for sale or let at just under Rightmove or Zoopla’s search bands. For example, if somebody is looking for a house between £190,000 – 200,000, many agents list their houses at £199,950.

They think that the £50 reduction will be more tempting. But here’s the problem. The property portals default listing is to show in price order, with the highest price first. The smart agent who realises this will have listed their house to align with the Rightmove’s search bands. In this example, £200,000. So their client’s property will be at or near the top of the search.

Listing at just under a price band, means your property will show up in one search result. But this clever tip gets even better. If you list exactly on a band, for example at £200,000, it will show up for people looking between £190,000 - £200,000 AND those looking between £200,000 - £210,000. So twice as many people will see the property, helping it to sell for the best price.

Royal Marines Band Charity Concert In Aid Of Seafarers UK The Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines from HMS Collingwood will be performing at 7.30pm on Thursday 10 December at Southampton’s Guildhall, with a concert to raise money for Seafarers UK. Major Jon Ridley RM, has recently taken over this band after two years as the Director of Music and Training at the Royal Marines School of Music. The programme will certainly have a Christmas flavour and, as always, include a little audience participation! Tickets are available from the Guildhall Box Office, phone 023 8063 2601, website www. livenation.co.uk, priced at £17, £16 or £15, with £1 concessions. Seafarers UK is a charity that

helps people in the maritime community, by providing vital funding to support seafarers in need and their families. The charity does this by giving money to organisations and projects that make a real difference to people’s lives across the Merchant Navy, Fishing Fleets, Royal Navy and Royal Marines. The services Seafarers UK funds have a positive impact on all seafarers. Last year grants totalling £2.5 million were paid to more than 70 maritime welfare charities. As an ‘island nation’ we depend on our seafarers to defend our shores, trade with other countries and import essential fuel and food. The job of a seafarer is therefore vital, but also demanding and hazardous with a much

greater chance of injury than many other professions. A large number of those serving will be facing problems of very different kinds; long periods of separation from friends and family, extended periods of duty, fatigue, and working heavy machinery whilst being exposed to harsh weather. Such dangers and difficulties can lead to disability, depression, debt, relationship breakdown, homelessness or even death. Seafarers UK funding enables seafarers to access advice and information, adapt to life on shore, re-train and find new employment. It also improves their quality of life by helping to provide the essentials of daily living that a small pension (or none) cannot cover. Often it may be the family of a seafarer who has been injured, held hostage or who has subsequently passedaway that require assistance. Because Seafarers UK works closely with all of the organisations that support seafarers and their dependants, donations can be targeted where they will make the biggest difference. Seafarers UK receives no government funding and relies on donations and fundraising to be able to carry on providing long-term aid. Without this, there simply wouldn’t be the level of support the charity is able to provide today and that last year gave hope and help to over 170,000 seafarers and their families when they needed it most.

RECIPE

Chinese Roast Pork with Vegetable Fried Rice Serves 4

Lean and tender pork fillet (also called tenderloin) is a great cut of meat for family suppers as it cooks fairly quickly and slices beautifully. Ingredients: • 500g pork fillet (also called pork tenderloin) • 3 tbsp hoi sin sauce • 3 tbsp soy sauce • 225g easy cook long grain rice • 2 tsp vegetable oil • 2 carrots, peeled and diced • red pepper, deseeded and diced • 6 spring onions, trimmed and chopped • 4 tbsp tinned sweetcorn kernels, drained • 50g frozen peas, thawed • 1 large egg, beaten

Ready in 1 hour 30 minutes, plus marinating

TIP

You can add a bit of extra heat to the marinade with a finely chopped red chilli pepper or a few crushed dried chilli flakes, if liked. 28

1. Place the pork fillet in a shallow dish. Mix together the hoi sin sauce and 1 tbsp of the soy sauce and spread over the pork fillet. Cover and leave to marinate in the fridge for 1-2 hours. Remove from the fridge and stand at room temperature for 20 minutes. Preheat the oven to 200°C / Fan 180°C / Gas Mark 6.

2. Place the pork fillet on a rack set over a roasting tin. Pour 600ml water into the base of the tin (this helps to keep the pork moist during cooking). Roast in the oven for 35-40 minutes until just cooked through. Cover with foil and leave to rest in a warm place for 15 minutes.

3. Meanwhile, cook the rice in a large pan of boiling, salted water for 8-10 minutes until just tender. Drain well. Heat the oil in a large frying pan or wok and fry the carrots for 5 minutes. Add the pepper, spring onions, peas and sweetcorn and cook for a further 2-3 minutes.

4. Stir in the cooked rice and beaten egg and cook over a high heat, stirring all the time, for 1-2 minutes, or until the rice is piping hot and the egg has just set. Stir in the remaining soy sauce and season with freshly ground black pepper. Use a sharp knife to slice the pork fillet and serve on a bed of the hot vegetable rice.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Justin Friel feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving

people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Romsey & North Baddesley area and Justin is finding that his

approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve

done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Justin a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

And Another Thing... by Tom Hughes Last Tuesday morning I drew back our bedroom curtains and watched bleary-eyed as the autumn wind sent plastic bottles, newspapers and Dominos pizza cartons swirling into my neighbour’s gardens. Cursing the litter louts who had blighted The Avenue, I turned to my slumbering beloved and said, “Sarah, what’s with all the rubbish outside? Should I ring the council?” From under the duvet came the muffled reply, “What day is it?” “Tuesday. Why?” My Dearly Beloved suddenly sprang from the matrimonial divan and stood frozen on our 80% wool twist, deep in thought. “Yesterday was a bank holiday... Tom, is Mrs Murphy out the front?” “Yes, why?” The look of horror on Sarah’s face said it all. Clasping our hands to our faces, we both screamed together: “The bins!” Time was of the absolute essence. “Tom, what are you doing?” “I’m er, looking for my other sock.” “Never mind socks, just go down as you are! There isn’t time!” “In my jimjams? Why can’t I get 34

dressed?” “Because... you are a man, you don’t care what people think. Now go! And don’t wake your little nephew.” Heartened that my sartorial insouciance gave me licence to roam the streets half naked, I leapt quietly down the stairs, through the kitchen and out onto the patio where lay the dreaded recycling receptacles. Dropping the waste food bin (eugh) onto the cardboard bin, I stuck the one for plastic bottles under my arm and ran towards the front door. I made it just in time to see the pink recycling lorry meandering away down The Avenue. Oh well, maybe we could just wait until next week? The bang from the window above told me that wasn’t an option.

and out of the open-sided van. Eventually, I caught up with the happy band of council employees at the end of The Avenue. Triumphantly, I dropped my containers at one of the Recycle Operative’s feet. Ignoring me completely, he joined up with his pals as the lorry trundled out of my road. And there I remained, standing in my pyjamas on the corner of The Avenue and Harrington Drive, smelling of stale milk. Undeterred I pressed on, managing to barge my way past the lorry to dump my bins at the feet of a tattooed Hell’s Angel in a hi-viz vest. “Can you empty my bins, please?”

Along the road I limped, hitching the boxes up onto my shoulders as bottles and tins clattered down around me.

Giant Haystack’s surly half-brother gave me a stare and then with his massive paw began lifting up my receptacles. Thank goodness for that, now I could end this nightmare, go home and tweezer the gravel out of my feet. Wrong!

“Mr Hughes? You’ve dropped something!”

The black bin crashed an inch away from my foot, un-emptied.

Mrs Murphy, aggressively sweeping her designated part of the pavement, shook her head as I staggered on, cursing my burden of domestic detritus.

“What’s the matter?”

Up ahead, a swarm of tattooed bin men swung plastic boxes in

“There’s a tin can in your cardboard box bin.” “Did you know that in China, a new coal-fired power station comes online every six months, so I don’t think one tin…”

“Sorry sir, I can’t take your bin now, I’ve put a sticker on it.” I looked down. On the side of the container was now stuck a bright yellow note – “Incorrectly Packed Bin”. Giant Haystacks shrugged his shoulders as he and his lorry rolled down Harrington Drive. The sky darkened, commuters stared. There was nothing left for it. The walk of shame awaited. I carried my still-full bins back home. Mrs Murphy shook her head as Sarah opened the door, took one look at my burden, then turned on her heel and went back inside. We didn’t speak until lunch. Billy, my little nephew, was sat at the kitchen table mashing his eggy soldiers as I shuffled mournfully towards the patio. “Uncle Tom, when I grow up I want to be a bin man.” “Why on earth would you want to be a bin man?” “Well, you get to wear a cool hi-viz jacket, you get a good pension, and you only have to work one day a week....”

GARDENING

Leaf Litter By Pippa Greenwood

Are you surrounded, engulfed and swamped with huge quantities of fallen leaves? Whether they come from trees in your own garden or from a neighbour, the deluge of leaves that falls in autumn is often enough to get level headed, treeloving gardeners eyeing up chainsaws!

At this time of year most of us are feeling as if we are being buried alive by falling leaves. Yes, the vast majority of leaves that are dropping from our own and our neighbours’ trees are pretty enough, and for a while their bright reds, yellows and oranges look stunning both on and off the tree. The problem is that it seems as if there is a virtually endless supply of them and after that initial flurry of pretty colour, the positive feeling soon starts to diminish. Leaves that are allowed to build up in your garden can cause problems - on the lawn they smother the turf grasses, often causing patches of die back, largely due to lack of light and oxygen. If the crowns of the less tough herbaceous perennials or alpines are covered in a soggy blanket of leaves, they too start to deteriorate. So, like it or not, you need to do something - and the sooner you get started the better! A spring-tined rake is perfect for raking leaves off the lawn, and can even work quite well on a gravel drive (provided you don’t rake too deeply and end up ploughing up the stones too!). If you have a lot of lawn or a lot of leaves (or worse still, a big lawn and lots of leaves too) then the

44

easiest way to deal with them is to mow the lawn. Provided you keep the hopper or grasscollector on the mower, when you empty it out you’ll have a fantastic mix of grass clippings and chopped leaves. On beds and borders you’ll usually end up hand picking, or if time and energy is in short supply you could invest in a leaf vacuum or a leaf blower (and this can, of course, be used on most drives and paths, and lawns too). Great, so you spend a lot of time and effort collecting up all these leaves. Then what? Don’t take them to the tip or make a bonfire: make leaf mould. It is as easy as anything and makes a fantastic soil mulch or conditioner…for free! Leaves are best rotted down on their own (they take longer to decompose than the rest of the stuff in your compost heap and need less air and warmth), so make yourself a simple and inexpensive leaf mould bin. Just drive four stakes into the ground to make the corners of a square, and then attach chicken mesh around the outside to make a cage. Stack the leaves in, tread or firm them, add some water if they are dry, then more water if the weather remains dry…

INTERVIEW

Hometown

Hometown burst onto the Irish music scene in 2014, scoring them two consecutive number ones in their homeland. Under the watchful eye of mentor Louis Walsh, they are set to become big on the other side of the Irish Sea. Lucy Ambache caught up with them on The Evening Breeze, and did her best to not come across as a concerned mum!

Brendan, you’re the shy one? Brendan: I can be. Cian, you’re the little cute one Cian: I’ll take that as a compliment Dayl is the pretty boy! Do you get the girls? Dayl: No! Dean. You’re the one that can dance. Dean: I can but I’m not the one you’re looking for. That’s Dayl – he’s really good. Josh. You’re the one who can sing. Josh: No I can’t <laughs> Ryan. You’re the clever one aren’t you. Ryan: You hit the nail on the head there. You redeemed yourself! <laughs>

surreal, meeting up with him and talking about the band – and the future plans. But you get used to it very quickly. What do your mums think? Are they worried about you being young and in showbiz? Dean: My mum’s glad to have me out of the house! Kian: Brendan’s dad called me about an hour ago, making sure he’s alright. Because Brendan broke his glasses and for some reason he feels the need to ring me to look after the situation! So do the girls love you? Dayl: They love Josh! Cian: They actually do Dayl: They love Josh. Dean loves them!

I feel like your mum. How old are you guys? 18, 19,20? What’s going on with the kids these days? Are they wearing tight trousers? Ryan: Yes. I usually wear the skinniest ones. Let’s talk about your debut UK single ‘Where I Belong’. It’s really nice. It’s a love song really. Dean: It was written by Kodaline and Jamie Scott. As soon as we heard it, we immediately fell in love with it and related to it in different ways. You are Louis Walsh’s band – he’s your manager. It must be pretty cool working with him? Six of you! This is a big band! 50
