It should be the last week of August when you receive your magazine this time round. If you were still away when this popped through your door then lucky you; if you’ve been and come back I hope you had a great time; if you haven’t been away at all, well, we had pretty good weather this summer, didn’t we?
So anyway, the idea was that our holiday would be a couple of weeks off work. The reality was that a business opportunity unexpectedly came up just Melanie Tinson before we left meaning that I did have to do some emailing and phone calls (and poor Melanie had a ton of extra stuff to do as well as ‘holding the fort’). However the result is that we have just launched two additional magazines covering Locks Heath and Fareham, bringing the total to 10 editions. You might imagine that behind the scenes, Discover Magazines is a big office with staff, cars and shiny computers. But far from it, all of us in the team work from home, some local, some not. With the DO YOU USE A SMART PHONE? wonders of technology we have To save our contact details been able to set up systems direct to your smart phone, use that wouldn’t be any better I-nigma QR code reader APP and scan for instant download. even if we were in the same room. What I’m saying is that if you are thinking of starting a business – and more people do in September and January than any other time - renting an office or taking on the commitment of staff isn’t always essential. If I could offer two tips to get you started, I’d say to use one of our computer services advertisers to set you up with your systems; and go to peopleperhour.com to find freelancers (or to become one yourself).

PROFESSIONAL SERVICES
Finance Save Money Now Winter might seem like some time away but you can save money by preparing for it now. Some services and products have lower prices while the weather is warmer and there are still offers on insulation and boilers so start work now before winter arrives and the prices go up. Switch your bills now It’s a great time to switch to a cheaper provider as the major providers typically start to increase their prices any day now, just in time for winter. Find a copy of your last gas and electricity bills, go to the energyswitching page on Moneymagpie. com and find a cheaper deal for yourself. It’s often worth considering one of the smaller suppliers to obtain a better price. You could save up to £60 a year by moving to a smaller supplier. Sainsbury’s Energy, First Utility, Ovo Energy and The CoOperative Energy all trumped the major suppliers for cheaper tariffs in early 2013.
8
Make hay while the sun shines
If you want to stick to one of the major suppliers you may be eligible for discounted bills through the government’s ECO (Energy Company Obligation) scheme. The ECO scheme offers heating and insulation improvements for low-income and means tested households. You’re eligible for the scheme if you receive certain benefits; see www.gov.uk/energycompany-obligation for the full list. You can apply through the Energy Saving Trust on 0300 123 1234. Once you have switched to the best-priced deal, the next step is to make sure your home retains heat with the efficiency of an oldtime dragon. Boilers If your boiler is coming to the end of its life, now is a good time to have it replaced. Most boilers over 15 years old can be repaired to keep them working, but they will be less efficient than modern ones. Even factoring in the cost
of a new boiler you could save money by replacing it now. Also, you could receive up to £270 cashback for updating your boiler through the new government energy improvement scheme, The Green Deal Cashback Scheme. The scheme will give you money back if you make energy efficiency improvements in your home such as installing a new boiler, having loft or cavity wall insulation done, improving heating, draught proofing, double glazing and installing renewable energy such as solar panels. The Green Deal is available to households in England and Wales and operates on a first-come, first-served basis. You can apply even if you are renting privately or in social housing providing the landlord can pay for installations costs. Firstly, have a Green Deal assessment carried out on your property which will provide you with a report of what could be improved. Then agree to a quote or Green Deal plan with a Green Deal Provider. You can find them online
through www.greendealorb.co.uk/ consumersearch. Once you have agreed the quote, apply for the Green Deal Cashback Voucher at www. gdcashback.decc.gov.uk. Make sure you have the work completed before the voucher expires and you’ll receive your cashback within 30 days. Insulation Now is a great time to get upto-date insulation as it’s a quiet period for installers. Insulation materials are also much cheaper to buy in the summer and early autumn when the demand is low, so it’s worth checking out B&Q or Homebase. Efficient insulation can cut the cost of heating and cooling by 40%, while loft insulations save an average 20% on your energy bills annually. Don’t forget you can also find loft
insulation vouchers on websites like Groupon as well as applying for the Green Deal. Draught-proofing Draught-proofing is one of the cheapest and most efficient ways to save energy in your home. The Energy Saving Trust claims you can save £55 a year. You could save more money by taking the DIY route; materials should set you back around £100 while a professional might cost double this. Some older properties with single glazing will be more difficult to draughtproof however and if you are not comfortable with your DIY skills, hiring a professional could save you money in the long run. Check with your home insurance policy before carrying out work yourself to ensure that you are covered for any mishaps.
Plumbers Summer and early autumn is a slower time of year for plumbers so you could find the rates more favourable, and you’ll also be able to get the work completed quickly. Have any pipe repairs or radiator work done now to eliminate cold spots and fix wasteful dripping taps. It’s also worth having the plumbers in just to check everything is ship shape for winter. By Jasmine Birtle, Moneymagpie.com. Moneymagpie.com has up to date information on hundreds of ways to earn a bit on the side and boost your income – and more are being added every week. There is also a wealth of information on best-buy financial products, plus heaps of articles to help you be a clever consumer and make the most of your money.

Dear Maggie
VARILUX S SERIES LENSES
I don’t know whether or not I should go to my brother’s wedding. The problem is that Ian hasn’t invited my partner, who I’ve been living with for over four years. I think he’s afraid that Andy will let the side down. This goes back to April, when Andy got injured in a pub incident. Since then he’s given up alcohol but Ian still looks down on him, even though they used to get on fine.

Dear Gemma I expect you have been considering several options, ranging from not attending the wedding to going along for the full works. You probably feel both angry and sad, which is why it’s so difficult to come to a decision. While you may not wish to upset either Ian or Andy, your own feelings are important too. Ian needs to understand that questions will be asked by the wider family and you have a right to tell them how proud you are of Andy and how sorry you are that he wasn’t invited. Whether or not you decide to attend, you need to let others know how sad you are at having to make this decision.

UPFRONT & PERSONAL
The People Behind Your Local Businesses Kay Murrant was feeling a little down after a family death, and a friend insisted on dragging her out to a flower arranging event at the local village hall. Little did she know at the time that this would lead to the start of a whole new way of life for Kay and her family. Watching the flower arranging demo that night inspired me. I returned home to my husband and three boys determined to make the most of my life. I convinced my husband that with our youngest son going off to school, now was the perfect time to follow my passion of flowers. I had always created floral arrangements for the family but started creating centre pieces for friends’ parties and special occasions, gradually building up my knowledge and confidence. This could easily have been enough to keep me busy (my husband certainly hoped so) but pre-family I had run my own sign writing business and I knew I could do more. I was fortunate that I had been able to be a full time mother while the boys were babies, but now I needed to do something for me.
So, I enrolled on an intensive floristry course in London, run by world renowned florist Jane Packerand so began the arduous daily commute to London. The long days proved a swift and steep learning curve for us all (my husband and sons had to master the oven, washing machine and vacuum cleaner!) The course taught me to became more aware of the importance of seasonal flowers and foliage, through to the complexity of wiring full shower bridal bouquets. Newly qualified I set up Pomp and Petals, creating a studio and website, slowly building my reputation for a bespoke design service. I feel truly privileged to provide flowers for weddings and only take on one wedding per day to ensure first class service. I then ran a successful Christmas Wreath Making workshops and now I regular run floral workshops throughout the year. I really enjoy passing on skills and sharing my love of flowers and take great satisfaction in seeing happy people take home their own floral creations, inspired to try further designs at home. The boys have all helped with

the business; I'm waiting for my eldest to pass his driving test so he can start delivering the bouquet orders. I feel so lucky to be able to follow my passion and look forward to many years of making people smile. After all who doesn't love receiving flowers, although sadly this is no longer a pleasure I experience myself: my husband says how can he possibly buy me flowers now!

HAMPSHIRE WALKS
Exton Walk Walk Distance approx 6.5 miles from the Shoe Inn Exton lies just off the A32 Droxford to West Meon road in the Meon Valley. Park in the Shoe Inn (SO32 3NT) car park located on Shoe Lane. Authorisation to park is required (01489 877526). Alternatively, drive through the village almost back to the A32 and park in the small lay-by opposite the entrance to Manor Farm. This walk is described from the Shoe Inn. On leaving the pub, turn left towards the church, follow the lane through the village for 200 yards to a ‘T’ junction and turn right. Keep straight on until you join the main A32. Cross the road onto a footpath signed “No through road”. Cross a footbridge over the Meon River. Trace this path for around 400 yards and with barns in front of you and a path joining from the left, turn left along the signed ‘South Downs Way’. Cross a section of wooden duckboards and walk along the narrow footpath between hedge and tree lined fields that narrows down to a gully and climbs steadily for some 600 yards. *Climb some wooden steps up to the disused railway track bed and turn left; walkers and cyclists can be seen heading up from the right from Wickham. Beacon Hill on your left and Old Winchester Hill on your right are occasionally glimpsed through the trees. Keep going straight for approximately 1200 yards ignoring other paths and tracks until you descend onto a minor road. Cross the road and climb the opposite bank to return to the track bed. 16
Continue along the track for a further 1800 yards until it passes under a road bridge. Access to this road is by walking further along to a footpath joining from the left for another 200 yards then turning left back on yourself up the slope to the road above. Turn left and walk along the road past Hayden Barn Cottage on the left. The road climbs steadily uphill for some 600 yards. Approaching the top of the hill, turn right onto a gravel track signed ‘Peake Farm’ and also signed as Monarch’s Way. Follow this track towards the farm for a good 1000 yards. At a left hand bend, ignore the track going straight on into a field. Follow the track around towards the farm, passing some fields with show jumping fences and stables for the local horses.
At the farm buildings, turn sharp right onto a waymarked footpath running between fields. The path emerges onto a metalled road to Peakes Farm. Turn left at the road. Walk approximately 50 yards then turn right along the side of a barn. Follow the path around the end of the barn and then along the left hand boundary of a field. Turn left through a gateway at the field boundary to join a concrete and tarmac farm track. Follow the signed path left along the right-hand boundary of a field, which switches half way up into a field requiring the walk to continue on the left hand edge. The path climbs steadily uphill, but offers some stunning views across mid Hampshire, Old Winchester Hill and surrounding areas. At the top of the rise, turn left along the field fence line and follow the path as it turns right along the left hand side of the field. At the end of the field, turn right onto the South Downs Way footpath leading away from Old Winchester Hill. The path meanders downhill alongside field boundaries with chalky conditions underfoot and some 1500 yards of twisting decent. At the bottom of the hill, turn left into woodland. Follow the path left ignoring paths merging from
the right. *Climb some wooden steps to the railway track bed. Cross straight over and descend more steps onto the footpath used on your outward journey (as shown in the dialogue marked). Follow the footpath back to the A32, cross the road into Church Lane and retrace your steps back to your car. A downloadable pdf of the walk and en enlarged map is available online at www.discovercommunity.co.uk
HISTORICAL NOTE... In 940 AD, the village of Exton carried the name of East Seaxnatune meaning the farmstead of the East Saxons. The 13th century church of St Peter and Paul was heavily restored in 1847. In 1801, the population of Exton was 224. By 1901 it had grown slightly to 299 persons but reduced again to 230 in 2001. The Meon Valley railway line was opened for business in June 1903 to connect Alton to Fareham and Gosport. It was one of Hampshire’s least successful railway enterprises and closed in 1955.

Inspiring people to cycle
LOCAL GROUPS & CLUBS
Romsey Hares & Tortoises Bike Rides The CTC is the national cycling charity; it inspires and helps people to cycle and keep cycling. It encourages all types of cycling, on the road or off it. It supports you if you already ride, or would like to ride, to work or school, for health, touring, sport and leisure – or just because it’s fun. Members of CTC South Hampshire range from those who like to ride 10-20 miles to those who ride Sportifs and events of over 1000km. Some members also enjoy touring in the UK and abroad. Part of CTC Southampton, the Hares and Tortoises is a group for those who see themselves as hares who prefer to sleep in the sun, or determined tortoises. The group meets at Palmerston’s statue, central Romsey at 10am on the 1st Saturday of each month for all-day ride, and at 2pm for tea-rides on 3rd Saturday of each month between April and October and starting at 1.30 pm from November to March. Rides are led at an average pace of 9 to 10 mph. Hills are ridden at each individuals’ own pace or walked if needed. All-day rides are about 35 to 40 miles and tea-rides about 17 to 25 miles. We lunch in a pub and the tea rides have a tea stop. Contact Viv Mackay (01794 368207) romsey@southhampshirectc.org.uk or go to southhampshirectc.org.uk for more details. 19
LIFE LIST
New Rules Unlike Harry Secombe, if I ruled the world, putting everything in order wouldn’t require fixing the seasons, compulsory singing or any lunar joviality. Practicality that’s the way forward: The Minus Five Rule. Everyone must drive at five miles an hour less than the appointed speed limit. Some of you are underdoing this already. The Apostrophe Tax. My goodness, the abuse those poor pieces of punctuation have to contend with. It’s £2 per use, with a £10 fine for incorrect use. Plus a separate £15 fine if they’re not used where they should be. Any revenue raised will go towards much-needed English courses. Greengrocers, you know who you are. The Horse Racing Safety Charter – especially for the jumps. If they decide to shoot the horse, the jockey has a 10 second start and then...well, you get the idea. I predict a 99% reduction in equine fatalities within two weeks. The Child’s Play Act. All Playstations, Wiis and whatever else you call them are henceforth manufactured - or re-engineered - so that they can only work for two hours at a time, and that’s after a ten-hour resting period. The Utilities Initiative. No water, electricity or gas bill can be despatched with an estimated reading. If you can’t be bothered to turn up - and at a civilised time, when I’m actually in - you don’t get your money. Now, surely, that’s not a lot to ask? 20

It’s Where the Others Fall Down! When your fence is damaged by weather, or even just deteriorates through age, it’s expensive and troublesome to maintain or replace it. Chances are you’ll have mature plants hindering access, and digging up the ground may damage the roots of your precious shrubs. As we come into the autumn, you can be pretty much guaranteed that we are going to see some ‘lively’ weather in the coming months. According to MetOffice statistics October and January are the two gustiest months of the year in this area, closely followed by March, then November, December and February. And if there’s one part of your property that doesn’t like wind it’s your garden fence. So, if you are going to do a replacement, you need it to last. This is where a new breed of boundary fencing comes into its own.
Colourfence is made of high tensile steel making it extremely strong but also very lightweight. It is a very practical alternative to traditional wooden fencing as it will not warp, corrode or peel and can stand up in winds of up to 130 miles per hour. Furthermore it has a tough painted finish that lasts many times longer than wood. With a 25 year guarantee, Colourfence is virtually maintenance free except for the occasional hose down. The product has won accolades and awards including a Gold Award at the RHS Blenheim Place Show as part of a show garden, and a Silver Award in the 'Best Labour Saving Product or Service' category of The National Gardening Awards 2004. Do it once, and do it right - call Colourfence today!

LOCAL GROUPS & CLUBS
Cycling’s a Breeze Want to get fit without joining a gym, make new friends, get some fresh air, or try something new? The local Breeze Rides are an ideal start for women and mums who are looking to get back on a bike, as a confidence booster, and the perfect way to introduce an active lifestyle into your routine. The rides are leisurely introductory rides, using mainly cycle paths and quiet lanes, aimed to get ladies back on their bikes again, (whether it's months or years since you've ridden a bike), in a supportive atmosphere. The routes are gentle, with few hills, and some of us walk up these! The rides take between an hour and an hour and a half. The aim is to have a social outing and make new friends locally. A rewarding treat of coffee and cake in a cafe is always part of the fun.

The popular saying “whatever floats your boat” is very apt after my recent excursion on SS Shieldhall from Southampton’s Eastern Doc. And the other “Don’t knock it till you’ve tried it.” also applies as it was far more enjoyable than anticipated! On Friday 9 August I boarded this ship with family and my father in law who is a ship and train fanatic, so a day out on this heritage cargo-passenger ship during Cowes Week was his perfect birthday treat.
SS Shieldhall was built in the Clyde Shipyards and launched there 1955. She had a long and successful first career with Glasgow Corporation carrying treated sludge out to sea and, in the summer, taking passengers ‘doon the watter’ on pleasure trips, despite its cargo! Bought in 1977 by Southern Water she was finally withdrawn from commercial service in 1985 but saved and purchased for £20,000 in 1988 by The Solent Steam Packet Ltd that still operates her now. TSSP is a charity, registered as an Industrial and Provident Society, with its main objective being to preserve the SS Shieldhall in operational condition. She is maintained and operated entirely by volunteers and resides in Southampton’s Eastern Docks. TSSP was recently awarded a £1.4 million grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund South East. TSSP MD, Graham Mackenzie said: “This grant means that in addition to her silver anniversary, we can look forward to celebrating her ‘golden anniversary’ too. We look forward
34
to all the hard work that lies ahead, safe in the knowledge that Shieldhall is, and will continue to be, ‘Alive and Steaming.’ However, Graham points out that the award represents just the start of saving Shieldhall: ‘It is critical that support for the ship continues through our programme involving volunteers, members, donors, events and functions. We’d be delighted to welcome anyone who would like to support and get involved in the project.’ Stuart McLeod, Head of the Heritage Lottery Fund South East, said: “SS Shieldhall is part of the National Historic Fleet and is a fantastic surviving example of its kind. Through helping secure Shieldhall’s future the project will open up opportunities for young people to learn the skills needed to operate a ship of this type, and for the volunteers to reach out into the local community, encouraging engagement with one of the country’s most important maritime heritage assets, such as the Scouts Training Days this summer.” We set “sail” at 11am and
headed for the Solent where it is confined until necessary structural work is carried out and it holds the necessary certificate to go further afield. However, with Cowes Week in full flow there was plenty of action on the water and time flew by. With a bar and light snacks for refreshments we enjoyed lunch in the sun on deck. On tour of the bridge I met Southampton’s Harbour Pilot but they refrained, wisely, from giving me free rein at the helm! The engine and boiler rooms were well worth a visit, despite the heat. I learned it takes three days to fire the burners to “steam ready” level and 17.2 tonnes of oil are stored in port and starboard bunkers, used to “level” the ship. In their heyday, tramp steamships used to burn 26 tonnes A DAY so we were lightly loaded in comparison. My father in law was right. “C’mon, Melanie, you’ll regret not seeing these magnificent machines in motion.” And as usual, he was absolutely right.
Forthcoming Events Merchant Navy Day 7 September 11am – 4pm, £30 Final public trip of the year. A special welcome to members of all the Services and Volunteer Organisations who would like to take part in a short service of remembrance and wreath laying conducted by its own Chaplain.
To apply to be a volunteer please call Graham on 07751 603190, or e-mail: graham@ss-shieldhall.co.uk. Discover will announce the 2014 Programme when it is released or visit www.ss-shieldhall.co.uk

A SHORT STORY
The Cream Jug Story by Jackie Brewster
Cheryl said,
him in spite of herself.
“You know what I’d like to try? Potholing.” You could have knocked Ken down with a feather. He said,
Ken thought they’d finally come to blows when Frank insisted she wear a safety helmet. It was all very well for him but Ken knew how long Cheryl spent on her hair every morning. She gave that mop more attention than she gave him. Reluctantly, she clipped the thing on muttering about health and safety gone mad. Ken didn’t dare let her see him laughing.
“Where’s this idea come from?” She explained that Donna tried it recently and had been raving about it ever since. Cheryl never liked to be outdone by Donna. That’s sisters for you. Ken joked, “Aren’t you worried about breaking a nail?” And she said tartly, “Sometimes, Ken, you’ve just got to get a bit dirty.” He was surprised and said, “Fine, you arrange it.” So he left it with her. They turned up on the day at a car park on the edge of Bower Crags and met the instructor, a nice lad called Frank. There was also a couple from Kidderminster and an older chap who never spoke. Frank took one look at Cheryl’s peep toe mules, and said, ‘You’ll need to change your footwear.” He offered her some battered Wellington boots, which she pulled on most begrudgingly. Then Frank handed them all a set of waterproof overalls. Cheryl turned very sulky. Ken tried cheering her up by pointing out that her linen slacks were dry clean only, and it was better to be safe than sorry. She had to agree with 38
They assembled at the mouth of the cave and Frank gave an introductory talk on potholing. Ken wished Cheryl could have paid more attention but she was texting Donna. She insisted she could text and listen at the same time. ‘Who’s she trying to kid?’ Ken thought, ‘Cheryl can’t listen even when she’s not doing anything at all’. Finally Frank said, “Right we’re ready to go in.” Cheryl looked up from her phone and asked, “Is that where we’re getting the clay from?” He looked surprised and said, “Yes, there’s lots of slippery clay in these caves, so go steady now.” Cheryl nudged Ken gleefully saying,
One by one, crocodile-style, they entered the mouth of the cave. Cheryl did Ken proud. She squeezed through every tight passageway, crawled on her hands and knees, and even dragged herself along on her stomach, getting absolutely filthy with not a peep of complaint. Though Ken was right at the back and couldn’t hear a word anyone was saying anyway. But Cheryl did it, and that’s the main thing. “You’re a star Cheryl!” Ken said, as they emerged, squelching, into the daylight. Yet Cheryl seemed bewildered. “When do we get started on the potter’s wheel?” She frowned, looking around. “Why would we need one of them dear?” Ken asked gently, concerned the darkness had affected her mind. “I thought we were going potholing,” she snapped. “That’s right, and we did,” he said. “Potholing, caving, spelunking – call it what you like.” Her mouth dropped open,
“Donna never got her clay from a cave.”
“I’ve only gone and mistaken potholing for pottery making,” she said, turning pale. “All I wanted was to make a cream jug like the one Donna made.”
Ken had no idea what she was on about, but was pleased that they were finally one up on Donna.
“You could still make a jug,” Ken replied. “After all, you’re wearing enough clay.”

HISTORY
This Month in History September 27th 1825: Opening of Stockton & Darlington Railway September 15th 1830: Opening of Liverpool & Manchester Railway
The beginning of the railway boom If there were such an event as World Railways Month, it would have to be September, when two of the most significant anniversaries in the history of tracked transport fall. The Stockton & Darlington Railway was the world’s first thoroughgoing commercial passenger and freight railway specifically designed for steam locomotives. It was officially declared open on September 27th 1825 and when the inaugural train – drawn by George Stephenson’s Locomotive No 1 and carrying 600 passengers in coal wagons with a luxury coach for VIPs – completed the 26-mile journey to the Tees wharfs at Stockton it was greeted by a crowd of 40,000 and a 21gun salute. It wasn’t the world’s first steam railway, though. The first attempts at adapting steam engines – by then a mature technology – went back to the late 1780s when Boulton & Watt’s chief designer, Andrew Murdock, was experimenting with high-pressure steam and building prototype miniature locomotives in his back garden. His next-door neighbour, something of a child prodigy called Richard Trevithick, took note of 46
what he was doing and when he grew up exhibited his own loco, Puffing Devil. That was in 1801, and by then other designers were already building steam-powered carriages designed for road use. The engines were too heavy for the roads though, so in 1804 Trevithick tried running an adapted engine (normally used to power a drophammer) on the tramway at Penydarren ironworks in Merthyr Tydfil. Again, the rails, which normally carried horse-drawn wagons, were too fragile. In 1808 Trevithick exhibited a purposebuilt loco, Catch Me Who Can, on a circular track at a “steam circus” held in Euston, London. Everything worked but although many people enjoyed the ride, no-one was buying. Trevithick gave up. Mine owners didn’t, though. In 1812 a short line using steam locos opened between Middleton colliery and the wharves at Leeds. George Stephenson himself built two such lines, at Killingworth and Hetton before starting work on the Stockton & Darlington. Great engineer he might have been, but he wasn’t much of an organiser. The S&DR owned the line (which was only single track) but not the locos; instead, colliers and carriers paid to run their own trains, some steam, some horse-drawn. The

confusion was indescribable. A second track was built and the need for timetables was soon discovered. The Liverpool & Manchester, on which Stephenson and his son Robert also worked, was a very different operation. The 35-mile line was intended to undercut the canal-owners who charged extortionate rates to bargees shuttling raw cotton and finished textiles between Liverpool docks and the Lancashire cotton-mills. It was two-track, steam-only, and properly timetabled. The L&M itself owned and operated the locos (including Stephenson’s Rocket), and even invented a crude form of signalling. The line itself was a miracle of engineering: it had 46 bridges and viaducts, one of nine arches, the Wapping tunnel was 1 miles long, one two-mile cutting was 70ft deep and to lay the line securely across the 4-mile swamp, Chat Moss, the engineers had to sink hundreds of hurdles of heather and stone. The grand opening was marred by the death of the Liverpool MP William Huskisson, who was hit by the Rocket himself, losing his legs and his life soon after. Nevertheless, the L&M was a wild commercial success – and the railway boom was on, not just in Britain, but around the world.
