A big slice of support from leukaemia patient & husband
Gill and Ray with their £1,000 cake!
In 2002, Gill Adkins, 53 found that the glands in her neck were swollen and showing no signs of going down. After a visit to her GP she was tested and found to have leukaemia cells. After many difficult years of treatment, recurrences and remissions, Gill, in April this year underwent a Bone Marrow Transplant in Southampton Hospital. Living in Christchurch, she will have to make regular return visits to the hospital, twice a week for check-ups.
Southampton Hospital Charity’s Red & White Appeal aims to raise £1.76million to create a dedicated day treatment unit for patients like Gill. When Gill and husband Ray found out about the Red & White Appeal they were keen to help, having experienced first-hand the need for a new treatment area to enhance patient care. Husband Ray said, “We found out that ward sister Yvonne Lo and the team regularly sell home-made cakes and biscuits to raise money for the appeal and decided to make a bid for a particularly tasty cake.” Reflecting on her treatment so far, Gill said, “I will be eternally grateful for the help, encouragement and high level of professional treatment that I’ve received from all of the team at Southampton. Our donation is just a small token of our appreciation. I just really like home-made cakes!” To find out more or to make a donation to the Red & White Appeal please call 023 8079 8881 or visit www.redandwhiteappeal.org
Can I do it again? Yes, I can! How can you help? Donate £1... It’s nearly 10 years since I ran 10 miles but I couldn’t turn down the opportunity to help raise the remaining £300,000 of Southampton Hospital’s Red & White Appeal by running the Great South Run in October.
Just finished! After a half marathon in 2004.
I publish your Discover Southampton magazine and if every house that gets a copy donates just £1, I’d raise £15,000! Please help and visit http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/DiscoverSouthampton and make a small donation to this worthy cause. Thank you.

Anniversary celebrations for Argonaut Community Enterprises ARGonAuT is celebrating the end of its second year this September. Established by Stephen Dering and Gill Winstanley who are both deaf, Argonaut is a not for profit social firm that delivers cleaning, gardening, plumbing and electrical services to homes across South Hampshire.
Gardener Richard has never worked since leaving college despite holding qualifications because of his learning disabilities and there was no support to find work. Yet he is part of the Argonaut’s Gardening team in demand in across Portsmouth, Southampton, Fareham and Meon Valley.
What makes Argonaut unique is that all the employees have a disability from deafness to learning disability to cerebral palsy. “Our staff value the real work opportunities that we are able to give them,” says Gill. “Many will be have been out of work for a long time and lack the confidence to do well in job interviews.”
Cleaner Julie from Hedge End was lacking in confidence and would not travel far from her home. “I started working at Argonaut in September 2011. My new job involved working with different customers and I was nervous about meeting new people. My confidence has improved a lot for part of my job I visit peoples homes and
communicate with different people every day. I learned to try and communicate in different ways so that customers can understand me.” “I was also not confident about going to new places by bus, train or even driving. Thanks to Argonaut I am beginning to feel more confident about getting around independently.” The more work that Argonaut can take on, the more local disabled people that will be able to benefit from the same opportunities that Jase and Catherine have had. Sexism in the Workplace by Alan Price Peninsula Group Director
££ £
£
IT may seem old fashioned but sexism in the workplace is still an issue that needs to be addressed. Acts of sexism are liable to be punished under the Equality Act 2010, legislation put in place to clamp down on any form of sexist discrimination in workplace. The most common form of sexism in the workplace is whereby a member of one sex is treated less favourably than a member of the other sex simply due to their gender; this is known as direct discrimination. Indirect discrimination occurs where a rule or criterion in a workplace puts a particular gender at a disadvantage. Peninsula Business Services state that sexual harassment is the most frequently occurring type of sexist discrimination, with many people not realising the possible consequences to what they think of as a joke. Said consequences can take the form of a sex discrimination claim thus Peninsula Business Services state that it is essential to create a workplace in which it is clear that such behaviour will not be tolerated and that any abuse of anti-discrimination policy will be consistently punished. The procedure for reporting harassment is set out by Peninsula whereby an employee should raise a grievance which would need to be dealt with under an organisations grievance procedure or personal harassment procedure where there is one. It is important to note that where a sex discrimination claim is made to a tribunal, there is no upper cap on the amount of compensation that can be awarded for a successful claim. Under the vicarious liability provisions, where an employer cannot show that it took measures to ensure discrimination does not occur in their workplace, the employer will also be held responsible for compensation for discrimination in respect of a matter of which he had no control or knowledge. For more information on sexism in the workplace please contact Peninsula’s 24/7 Advice Service on 0844 892 2772.

10th Anniversary of The Prince's Trust Team - delivered by Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service HAMPSHIRE Fire and Rescue Service are celebrating 10 years of being Delivery Partners of the Prince's Trust Team programme across Hampshire. In 2002 the very first team started at St Mary's Fire station and 10 years on, 59 Teams have been delivered across local areas of Southampton, Basingstoke, Rushmoor, Andover, new Forest, Eastleigh and Gosport. The programme is a 12-week personal, social and educational development course that offers young people the skills and confidence to get into work, training or education. Over 800 young people from across Hampshire have been
through the course with Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service since it started in 2002, which has helped many of them go on to have successful careers. Louise Kovacs, Delivery Partner Manager for the Prince's Trust Team, says: “Many young people that go on the course don’t have the skills or confidence to find work, and often they feel as though they have no hope. " “The Team programme has helped many of these young people to turn their lives around over the years, enabling them to move forward into successful careers, or back into education.
We would love to speak to those people and hear their stories as part of the 10th anniversary celebrations.” If you have a great story to tell drop us a line on: princes-trust@hantsfire. gov.uk RECRuITInG noW for September & January Teams in the Southampton, Rushmoor, new Forest and Basingstoke areas - if you are 16-25 or know of any young people who are currently unemployed and would benefit from this unique course delivered by Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service, contact us on: 023 8062 6706 or visit www. hantsfire.gov.uk/ princestrust
