DIY? You Probably Shouldn’t!

Melanie Tinson & Tania Houston

A few years ago I bought a book called Getting Things Done by David Allen. The irony of not having made it past chapter two isn’t lost on me. Page 1 should have been “How to get to the end of this book”. Now, procrastination can’t always be dealt with by saying to yourself ‘just get on with it’. No amount of self-criticism is going to make you good at finances for example, if you are number blind. And actually if there is something you know you are really rubbish at, you should be finding someone else to do it, not beating yourself up about your tardiness. I started 2016 with exactly that realisation. I can’t do DIY and my husband can, but hates it so is a bear to live with while he’s doing it, so I’ve been making good use of our advertisers. DIY of course is generally less money (although actually not always) but is always more time. And if you are over 41, you are half way through the average UK life expectancy. You can always work a bit harder to make more money; you can’t make more life though. However, ultimately we all drag our feet about things we shouldn’t and the irony is that you probably don’t get round to doing anything about your behaviour! But I happened to come across this brilliant article (written by a procrastinator) which really resonated with me. This has two parts and can easily be read in under 30 minutes and has the added bonus of being funny and well written meaning you want to read it! You can read this yourself at http://tiny.cc/postponing. Enjoy!

And Another Thing... by Tom Hughes Follow Tom @groomsdaybook Where to take my beloved for a much needed break? Tenerife for some early sun? Or how about springtime in Paris? Or maybe somewhere nearer home....? “Southport? In March? But Tom, I thought we were going to Paris?” “Did you know Southport’s Lord Street is the inspiration for the boulevards of most romantic city in the world?” “Oh, for a horrible minute I thought you meant we were going to -” “Southport, that’s right. We can take Olly on the beach. Go for a stroll along Southport Pier?” “You know how to spoil a girl, don’t you?” “Come on, grab your coat, better take an extra layer, best take an umbrella too.” “Anything else?” “A flask of Bovril? Oh and a woolly hat.” In no time at all the Mondeo Ghia was within striking distance of the classiest seaside town north of Liverpool (and south of Blackpool). I parked up on the coast road and after leaping acrobatically to catch my airborne umbrella, shouted over to Sarah. “Have you got any change for the machine?” “What!? The wind, I can’t-” She shook her head, no change. 8

No matter we could pay via mobile phone. Thirty minutes later I was in the newsagents changing a five pound note. “You can pay by mobile mate.” “Unfortunately I failed my computer programming A-level, so can I have five pound coins please?” At last, we were ready to explore. “So you see, the design of this street, with its wide thoroughfare, is just like the boulevards of Paris. It is said that Napoleon III lodged just off Lord Street, in 1834 I believe, and that gave him the idea-” “Tom, as fascinating as this is, can we just get out of the rain?” “Here let’s go down this side alley and get our fortune told.” “I’ll tell you what Tom, you go and get your fortune told, I’m going into Russell & Bromleys.” Refusing to be dissuaded, I popped my head through the beads hanging across the door and sat down in Madame Sylvia’s bijou front parlour, with Olly sat quietly on my knee. She took my hand in hers which was of course the signal for me to start giggling. “I would say that you are quite a happy-go-lucky person. Always smiling.” “Well fancy you knowing that?” I beamed. “Now, you haven’t got a younger

brother have you?” “No.” “Older sister?” “No. I have a younger sister and an older brother.” “Yes I thought so.” Well done Madame Sylvia, right on the money again! Leaving Madame Sylvia’s armed with the knowledge that my fortune was on its way, I met Sarah coming out of the shoe shop. Eventually, we battled our way across the coast road and found our way to Southport Pier. “Tom look at it, it’s sheeting down.” “It’s OK darling worry not, we can take the train.” And there, coming into the tiny station on the shortest bit of track known to man, was a real live proper train. “Is this the right train for the end of Southport Pier?” The exhausted driver looked at me like he hadn’t heard that joke for hours. “Ninety pence please.” At the other end of this pile of Victorian Iron we discovered a seedy amusement arcade and tatty cafe which had been refurbished completely and replaced with, er, a tatty cafe and seedy amusement arcade. We decided to sit out the storm with a restorative cuppa. Unfortunately, a stroppy little man in a hi-viz jacket and

moustache barred our way. “Sorry sir, no dogs in the cafe.” We all looked down at Olly, now soaked and shivering with the cold. “It’s OK, he’s a guide dog.” The little Jobsworth’s eyes narrowed. “Well where’s his harness and tunic?” “It’s his day off.” “His day off?” “Yes. Do you wear that tunic on your day off?” “Er, no.” “Well neither does he, now excuse us.” After our greasy Eccles cake and stewed tea we decided to head home. I made a dash for the train but it had already gone. “Blast! What time is the next one?” “I’m not sure but I think I can see it now, you know that one there, at other end of this pier?” We returned to our Mondeo Ghia only to find a nice shiny yellow parking ticket stuck onto the windscreen. “I thought you bought one?” “I thought you paid by mobile?” And the moral of this story? When a fortune teller says it’s your lucky day to go and buy a ticket, always follow her advice.

Downton Cuckoo Fair 2016 The Downton Cuckoo Fair is an ideal one-day family event, held on the greens in the picturesque village of Downton, six miles south of Salisbury on the Ringwood road. Although the first fair dates back to 1249, it has been re-established in its present form since 1979 and always takes place on the May Bank Holiday Saturday. This year the Downton Cuckoo Fair is on the 30th April. A highlight of the fair will be the crowning of the Cuckoo Fair Princess, which takes place outside The White Horse Inn and signals the official opening. This is followed by a colourful procession, beginning at the Bull Hotel and consists of the Downton Band, the Princess, Maypole dancers, Morris dancers and many others. There are four Maypole displays throughout the day, the first taking place directly after the procession. Freshly cooked lunches are prepared in seated areas by some of the best cooks in the village. For those who prefer to savour all the fair’s events whilst eating on the move, there are numerous outlets for barbequed sausages, burgers and bacon rolls. There are plenty of stalls as well as a large produce market and in the Memorial Gardens there are livestock, country crafts, displays and numerous activities to keep the children amused for hours. Entry to the fair is free and there are facilities for the disabled. Ample car parking can be found around the fair at £5 per car. Downton truly comes alive on Cuckoo Fair Day and always proves to be a great family day out! 12

RECIPE

Chicken In Red Wine Serves 4

This is a quick, easy and flavoursome way to serve chicken. Use a full-bodied red wine such as a Burgundy for the best flavour, although there is no need to buy a really pricy one! Ingredients:

1.

Heat the oil in a large frying pan over a medium heat. Add the chicken chunks and fry for 4-5 minutes, turning frequently until golden brown all over. Transfer to a plate with a slotted spoon.

2.

Add the button mushrooms and shallots to the pan and fry for 5 minutes until just beginning to brown. Add the garlic and fry for a further minute then return the chicken to the pan and stir in the red wine, stock, tomato puree and bay leaf.

3.

Bring to the boil then reduce the heat, cover and simmer gently for 25-30 minutes or until the chicken and onions are tender.

4.

Blend the cornflour and 2 tbsp water to a smooth paste then stir the paste into the pan. Simmer gently for further 2-3 minutes, stirring all the time, until the liquid has thickened. Serve with sautéed potatoes and steamed green beans and garnish with parsley sprigs.

• 2 tbsp olive oil • 600g skinless chicken breast fillets, cut into chunks • 225g button mushrooms • 200g shallots, peeled • 1 garlic clove, peeled and crushed • 300ml red wine • 200ml chicken or vegetable stock • 2 tbsp sun-dried tomato puree • 1 bay leaf • 2tbsp cornflour • Sprigs of fresh parsley to garnish • Sautéed potatoes and steamed green beans, to serve

Ready in 1 hour 15 minutes This dish freezes well, so it’s worth doubling up the quantities to freeze away half for another day. Allow to cool completely then spoon into a shallow freezer-proof container and freeze for up to 2 months. Defrost thoroughly then reheat in a flameproof casserole until piping hot.

Seedy Sunday 13th March, 2-4pm Memorial Hall, Downton, SP5 3PD

OHJ BATHROOMS For Complete Bathroom And Tiling Solutions

Seedy Sunday is all about sustainable living with particular emphasis on growing your own fruit and vegetables and minimising what we throw away through re-use and recycling. At the heart of Seedy Sunday is the Seed & Plant Swap. If you have spare seeds (veg or flowers), either ones you’ve collected yourself or spare commercial ones, please bring them to swap for others. Alternatively just come and pick the seeds you’d like for a donation. Also present will be ‘More Veg’, who sell seeds in small quantities, and hopefully neck rot resistant onion sets on sale too. Although there’ll be no seed potatoes this year, as it’s a little late, we will have some early vegetable seedlings to get you started. Garden accessories should include pea/bean sticks (made from coppiced material). In addition children can take home a FREE vegetable/ flower starter kit so they can start their very own garden. EASTER will be only a couple of weeks away so New Forest Chocolates will be selling locally made hand crafted eggs (just wrapped in cellophane without all that packaging). Other seasonal gifts will be available. If you have any blunt garden tools then please bring them along; the charity ‘Tools for Self Reliance’ will be sharpening garden tools with the profit going to provide implements to developing countries. Gardening to encourage those vital pollinators and other good wildlife (hedgehogs to eat the slugs) features this year. Wild flowers, as well as looking lovely, are important for bees who pollinate fruit bushes and veg plants. You can buy wildflower seeds and learn about pollinators from the ‘Bees Knees’. The RSPB will be present selling bird food, nesting boxes and insect homes. Children can learn how to make their own insect house. And of course the perennial favourites will be there – chickens, and honey from our local beekeeper. Finally please bring unwanted garden items, tools or books for the Recycling Table (but no small plastic pots please). Enjoy tea with homemade cakes and Easter biscuits! Seedy Sunday - the start of Spring!

Normally play is at Hunts Farm Sports Field between 13:45 & 16:30 on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. We are an informal and relaxed club where no one need feel daunted by an excess of zeal or any form of snobbery. We are ordinary folk and many of us are, quite frankly, past our prime for other sports but age is almost irrelevant with croquet. There are a few techniques to learn, like how to make your ball jump, but it is largely a matter of tactics and careful aim.

GARDENING

Vertical Cover With Climbers by Pippa Greenwood www.pippagreenwood.com Blue Clematis

Take a look at the boundaries of your garden; are they rather uninteresting, drab or perhaps even downright boring? It is time to start thinking about doing some vertical gardening - don’t just concentrate on beds, borders and beautiful containers, but think about all those upright surfaces just itching to be clothed in glorious climbers or wall shrubs. If you have several vertical surfaces then so much the better.

A visit to your local garden centre will reveal a plentiful supply of suitable plants. Start by taking a look at the surface you have to offer, get a rough idea of the size of the area to be covered, the direction it faces and the amount of sun or shade the plants growing on the wall or fence are likely to receive. Check your soil type too – discover whether it is sandy and free-draining, sticky and full of clay or somewhere in between as the plant you choose must be suited to the site. Some climbers are quite quick growing and will look good later this year, and then go from strength to strength as the years pass. Many provide strong colour and others will be a useful backdrop for the garden as a whole. Don’t forget that most buildings can have climbers grown against them, so if you have an unsightly shed, garage or even a fairly uninteresting looking back to your house, then consider erecting some sort of support system on which you can grow your climbers. If you have a long stretch of wall you can break up its monotony by planting up with several

28

different plants. If you grow a wide range of plants and only allow them to reach the height of the first floor, it will make a tall, narrow building seem somewhat broader. A climbing hydrangea, Hydrangea petiolaris, or self-clinging plants such as ivies are ideal for this situation, but make sure the mortar on your wall is in good shape before planting. Climbers are best planted in open ground, as they tend to have sizeable root systems. However, you can grow them in containers if you get really stuck, but make sure that you re-pot regularly and that you have enough space to ultimately use a really good sized container such as a half barrel. You will need to use a loam-based potting compost and add extra grit to ensure that the compost continues to drain freely. It is also essential to place a really deep layer of crocks at the base of the container so that the drainage holes are loosely covered and will not become clogged by the compost. I always add some controlled release fertilizer granules to the compost, as this will help to ensure that plants get

adequately fed at least for the first few months. If you plant the container up using a triangular or V-shaped trellis panel inserted at the back surface, this will give the plant an initial support and it can then climb up this before moving on to your wall or fence. You will, of course, need to tie the top section of the trellis into the wall or fence, so that it does not rock about. Once you have decided where to plant the climber, dig a really good sized planting hole, making sure that it is at least 18 inches (45 cm) away from the wall or fence. This may sound like a long way, but it ensures that the plant receives adequate moisture and does not suffer any adverse effects from the proximity of the nearby wall. Incorporate plenty of planting compost, well rotted manure or garden compost,

and then once you have soaked the root ball of the plant you can place it in the hole. Ideally you should position it at a 45 degree angle, so that it is already leaning towards the wall. Once you have checked that the levels are right you can spread the root system out and plant in the normal way. If your climber is already attached to some sort of support system, such as bamboo canes, it helps if you gently untie the stems from any central stake and then choose the best looking shoots and train these towards your new support system. You can use the existing bamboo canes to help it on its way. It is essential to keep climbers really well watered, particularly if they are on or near a sunny wall. Any good garden centre will have a range of plants available, but here are some suggestions for
