The Ageas Salisbury International Arts Festival Friday 27 May – Saturday 11 June 2016 In conversations with Richard E Grant, Frieda Hughes, Sir Vince Cable, Ben Miller, Juliet Stevenson and Dame Joan Bakewell Returning for a 44th year and taking its inspiration from New Zealand, the Festival will once again fill every corner of the medieval City and surrounding countryside with a thrilling mix of music, comedy, film, theatre, circus, dance, walks, poetry, exhibitions, children’s workshops and street theatre, featuring an outstanding range of high-profile and emerging talent from the UK, New Zealand and beyond. A specially commissioned Opening Ceremony will celebrate the start of this year’s Festival drawing on the long and rich tradition of the Maori welcome, powhiri, and the arts of kapa haka. Under Festival Chorus director Howard Moody, hundreds of singers will welcome

Ngati Ranana, the UK’s foremost Maori arts club, performing traditional Maori arts before joining forces with the Chorus in a newly commissioned ‘waiata’ or song to launch the Festival. A diverse array of in-conversations and special guests fill the programme including the Right Honorable Sir Vince Cable MP; actor Richard E Grant; one of the world’s most respected Maori authors, Witi Ihimaera; naturalist and broadcaster Stephen Moss; comedian and writer Ben Miller; journalist and author Dame Joan Bakewell; actress Juliet Stevenson; former England Rugby Union captain Will Carling; comedian Jon Culshaw; Queen of Shops Mary Portas; and former Artistic Director of the National Theatre Sir Richard Eyre among others. Festival Director Toby Smith said: “This year we look southwards

to New Zealand, a distant land defined by Maori culture and its fusion with European and contemporary Pacific island traditions. “New Zealand artists spanning every art form will be coming to Salisbury, bringing work rarely seen outside of the country. The Festival is all about bringing the world to Salisbury and showing off our city to the world. Let’s bring it on.” The 2016 Ageas Salisbury International Arts Festival is supported by Creative New Zealand Toi Aotearoa Booking is now open www.salisburyfestival.co.uk

Melanie Tinson & Tania Houston

Some people love the process of home improvement. The whole choosing the furniture, the colours, the accessories and planning how everything is going to be laid out. I’m not one of them. But our house is 18 years old now and we’ve been really trying this year to start bringing it up to date, but much as I love the finished look, the getting there is a slog. As for husband Kevin, he wouldn’t even come to the showroom. As an aside, when he asked me to come and look at a new lawnmower with him I had no guilt in saying ‘categorically no’. However, a bit of envy got me moving on it. A friend of ours moved into a new home and visiting for the first time I realised that our house – although only 18 years old – had become dated and frumpy. These days, tiles in bathrooms are always fitted horizontally, not vertically, and forget the twiddly little border tiles half way up the wall. And if you still have carpet in your bathroom, well, ewww. Fancy coving and ceiling roses? Out. Inset spotlights in kitchens and bathrooms? In. Now, I have to say I’m a lot more interested in my life outside of the house than in it. I love the what’s on listings (p36) that our artwork and editorial coordinator Izzy pulls together for us. Particularly at this time of year there are some wonderful outdoor events to go to. But I can now see the pleasure that comes from having a nice home. So gritted teeth, keep focused on the finished product, and get on with it. And despite his reluctance Kevin will give an opinion on ‘this one or that one’ from the pile of catalogues I’ve accrued. I’m still not compromising on lawn mowers though.

GARDENING

The Grass Can Be Greener by Pippa Greenwood www.pippagreenwood.com Your garden should now be starting to look lush and green, with beds and borders beginning to come into their own. But if your lawn spoils it all, or you want to install one, now is the perfect time to get started.

Preparing the site Remove all weeds, large stones, debris and any old grass, then dig or fork over thoroughly to remove all taproots of weeds. Kill off an old lawn or a weed infested site with weedkiller based on glyphosate, then strip it off or dig it in once it all dies off. Incorporate organic matter to improve moisture retention on sandy soils; on heavy soils dig in grit and organic matter for drainage. Next, firm the whole area by treading it over evenly in flatsoled boots, then rake thoroughly and remove stones or other debris from the surface, treading gently

down again if necessary.

Buying turf Buy turf from a reputable supplier which is suitable for your requirements – some, especially those including lots of dwarf ryegrass, are much tougher, while some contain a seed mixture for use in shade. A ‘bowling green’ effect may look superb but will need more maintenance and be less hardwearing. Avoid cheaper turf as it can contain weeds, pests or diseases, or is simply not a good grass mixture. Arrange delivery of turf when you need it and never store for more than two days. It can remain rolled up for up to 24 hours, but for any longer unroll immediately, lay out flat on paving or plastic sheeting and water regularly.

Laying the turf Lay turves closely together and do not allow the edges to overlap. For an even finish, joins on each row should be staggered, like bricks in a wall. Lay the first row of turf using the adjacent path or lawn edging to form a straight line to work to. Roll out each turf carefully so that the edge abuts onto its neighbour.

8

Lay the next row, again ensuring that the long edges of each abut onto the long edges of the last row. To avoid damage, kneel on a plank placed over the previous row and continue until your new lawn is in position. If you need a small section of turf to complete a row, add this in the middle of a row rather than at the end so it is less likely to be dislodged or dry out. For a curved edge lay the turves so that they overlap the new lawn edge and cut to shape. When finished, gently tamp the area over using the back of a rake and if any turves sink place some extra soil underneath until they are level. Finally, brush in a mixture of horticultural sand and finely sieved soil over the surface, ensuring that gaps between the turves are filled in.

Care and maintenance Gently water the new lawn using a sprinkler, ensuring that the water penetrates right down to the root level. Water regularly in dry weather, particularly for the first couple of months whilst the roots establish and avoid walking on it during this time. You will soon have a gorgeous lawn to be proud of.

It’s been a busy year for Dovetail Framing, which celebrated its first birthday on 1st November. This unique business provides customers with a visit from a framing expert who helps them to make frame and mount choices and then delivers the finished product direct to the customer’s home.

Jonathan Birch

Dovetail Framing is the brainchild of former Police Inspector Jonathan Birch of Awbridge, who ended a varied career as part of the team delivering security for the 2012 London Olympic Games. “After many years in such a demanding role, I was looking for both a change of direction and a creative challenge” says Jonathan. “Prior to joining the police I ran a successful framing business. I wanted to further develop my expertise in this area, while designing a business centred around the customer”. Dovetail Framing offers both convenience and the ability to make framing choices with reference to home décor and surroundings. Jonathan visits customers, including professional artists, in their homes, offices or studios, and spends as much time as necessary making sure they choose the right mount and frame. Once an order has been taken, items are taken to the workshop for completion and delivered back to the customer once finished. Visits are without obligation, and no extra charge is made for this service. As well as paintings, prints, drawings and certificates, Jonathan has also framed a number of more unusual items. These include record sleeves, fishing flies, football shirts, badges, medals, and even a bag of fairy dust! “One of my customers had organised a ‘Frozen’ party for his grand-daughter, which resulted in her receiving a certificate and a vial of ‘fairy dust’ in a bag” says Jonathan. “I hand-finished a frame in exactly the right colour to match, and displayed the certificate and the vial in a shadow box, much to her delight!” Jonathan is enthusiastic about the future. “I have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know my customers and bringing their projects to fruition and am looking forward to meeting many more in the coming year. Call me on 01794 341274 or visit the website at www.dovetailframing.co.uk and I’ll be happy to help”. 21

And Another Thing... by Tom Hughes Waiting to board the plane for our weekend in Nice, my breathing became shallow, my hands felt clammy and my heart began to race. But it wasn’t the terror of being entombed in a silver tube burning gallons of kerosene in an illogical attempt to defy gravity, rather it was my other flying phobia - a brat sat in the seat behind. After our furious dash across the tarmac elbowing non-priority boarders out of the way (we’d paid three quid extra to be treated like VIPs you see), we stored our luggage and settled into our seats. As Sarah began debating which variety of microwaved toasty to scald her mouth with, I commenced my nervous fidgeting. I craned my neck, scanning for infants. “Tom, just relax. We will be off in a minute.” “Look, there’s one coming now, and it’s getting nearer.” “They seem a perfectly nice family to me.” “It’s not Mum and Dad I’m worried about, it’s that red faced urchin I don’t like the look of.” The smug thirty-something parents scanned the row numbers as they squeezed themselves inexorably nearer. Thirty one, thirty two, thirty....three - there, 22

perfect. And where do you think they ended up? You know it brother. The smiling cabin crew snapped the overheads shut and fussed everyone into their places as the Irish lilt of the pilot’s voice reassuringly purred our route over the PA system. I closed my eyes. Maybe the kid with E numbers smeared over his sticky intemperate mush would be perfectly behaved, maybe he would just nod off in his Mummy’s arms? What did it matter that he was directly behind my head? The flight was short, it didn’t… thump! Oh no, we hadn’t even taken off and it had started. Thump! It isn’t the actual kick that drives you insane, it’s the anticipation of the tiny toes tapping the back of your seat that’s so unbearable. “Tom, just ignore the little chap, we’ll be there before you know it, read your guide to Nice.” “I am trying to ignore it (thump), but it’s not easy when you have parents who can’t control their blasted kid (thump).” “Tom! Shush, they’ll hear you!” “Good!”(Thump). As the big tin bird eased herself into the stratosphere, the blonde terror behind succumbed to fatigue and fell into a fitful

slumber. I closed my eyes and tried to join the little darling. Unfortunately, my attempt at a cat nap was shattered by the racket from the well-padded lady in the seat next to mine. Her vast paw swirled inside her plastic cashew tub, like Trevor Brooking choosing the FA Cup quarter finalists. Finally content with her haul, she pulled yet another catch of nuts from her bucket. Her powerful elbow, nudging me with each swirl, was like a JCB digger excavating a drain. As she daintily tossed nuts into her pie hole with all the skill of a serial grazer, I leaned over to Sarah and whispered, “Do you think she’s coming to Nice to sample the gastronomy? (Nudge). “Shush Tom, she’ll hear you.” “Good!” (Nudge). Then thankfully, she nodded off. A moment’s pause, then inevitably, the snoring began. Her huge proboscis making a noise like a gnu with sinus trouble Zzzzzzphhh! This terrible cacophony, apart from deafening me, roused the little cherub sitting behind. And off we went again! Thump! “Right, that’s it, I’m going to say something!”

“Tom! Please, we’re nearly there!” “I’m sorry Sarah but this is ridiculous (thump). Excuse me, I’m sorry to bother you, but can you not control you child? I’m not bothered but my wife is getting very angry.” “Tom!” Sarah squeezed her head next to mine through the little gap between the head rests. With our faces squashed together, we must have looked quite alarming. She tried to smile, but the glare from the brat’s Mother was enough to make her retreat. Sat back in her seat, Sarah’s weapon of choice (elbow) was immediately deployed to painful effect. “How dare you bring me into it.” (Dig) “Ow! I...wanted to present a united front?” (Thump, Zzzzz) “In future Tom, leave me out of your squabbles please.” “Whatever you say dear and by the way, this is going to bruise.” “Good! And so will this one, hopefully!” (Dig).

Cloudy2Clear Announce Trusted Trader Partnership Consumer champions Which? have now joined the thousands of customers who recognise that Cloudy2Clear Windows really are a business that you can TRUST. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. Group Managing Director Marcus McGee believes that Which? have endorsed Cloudy2Clear’s long standing company

policy of delivering the highest standards possible at all times. ‘Our service is simple. If your double glazing has misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service the Salisbury East

Village area & manager Justin Friel agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Justin a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be

RECIPE

Thai Beef Salad Serves 4 Ready in 50 minutes, plus marinating time This colourful and fragrant main-meal salad is great for easy entertaining. Choose thick pieces of steak and take care not to overcook them or they will become tough and chewy.

Ingredients: • • • • • • • • • • •

2 x 175g sirloin steaks 1 tbsp lime juice 2 tbsp light soy sauce 1 garlic clove, peeled and crushed 1 tsp dried chilli flakes 6 spring onions, trimmed and thinly sliced 8 radishes, trimmed and thinly sliced 100g fresh bean sprouts 1/4 cucumber, thinly sliced 4 firm plum tomatoes, quartered 200g mixed salad leaves

FOR THE DRESSING • • • • •

juice of 2 limes 2 tbsp Thai fish sauce 2 tsp brown sugar 1 tbsp fresh chopped coriander 1 tsp finely chopped lemon grass

1. Place the steak in a shallow dish. Mix together the lime juice, soy sauce, garlic and chilli flakes. Season with freshly ground black pepper and cover and leave to marinate for 1 hour.

2. Heat a cast iron skillet or griddle until very hot. Add the steak and cook for 4-6 minutes on each side. Remove from the pan, cover with foil and leave to rest for 15 minutes.

3. Toss together the spring onions, radishes, bean sprouts, cucumber, tomatoes and salad leaves. Mix together all the dressing ingredients, stirring until the sugar has dissolved. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper.

4.

Slice the warm steak thinly across the grain. Toss gently into the salad with the dressing. Pile into a large shallow serving dish and serve immediately, or leave to cool and serve chilled.

TIP

Lemon grass stalks are sold in small packs by the fresh herbs in the supermarket. You only need a small amount to give an extra zesty fragrance to the dressing but the stalks will keep for 1-2 weeks in the fridge. Try adding chopped to curries, fruit salads or infuse in hot water for a refreshing alternative to tea.
