Spring Into Action

Melanie Tinson & Tania Houston

As I write this month’s letter, the sun is shining and there’s definitely a feeling that spring is on its way. It’s still freezing out, but it’s such a feeling of hope when the sun gets a bit brighter. Interestingly many of our advertisers tell us that business picks up and this time of year. Not just the gardeners – you’d expect that – but it seems that the sunlight streaming into our homes shows up wear and tear and more than a few days of dust too (and I’m not just talking about my face in front of the mirror, hah!). ‘Book early’ is the lesson if you want to get home and garden improvements underway. It wasn’t much of a winter to speak of, but still dark and damp enough to discourage going out in the evenings. So now is the time to review the magazine to see our events features and pages to top up the diary for the next couple of months. In my last note I mentioned trying to tackle my procrastination problem. I’m not an awful procrastinator, but like many of you I do avoid the tricky and boring tasks. But once you start, you do get momentum and it makes it easier to move onto the next job. I keep reminding myself of that, knowing that if I say to myself ‘there’s no rush’ I’ll get out of the habit and I’ll be back at the beginning, feeling like I’m pushing water uphill. No excuses Tania – just do it!

And Another Thing... by Tom Hughes Follow Tom @groomsdaybook Where to take my beloved for a much needed break? Tenerife for some early sun? Or how about springtime in Paris? Or maybe somewhere nearer home....? “Southport? In March? But Tom, I thought we were going to Paris?” “Did you know Southport’s Lord Street is the inspiration for the boulevards of most romantic city in the world?” “Oh, for a horrible minute I thought you meant we were going to -” “Southport, that’s right. We can take Olly on the beach. Go for a stroll along Southport Pier?” “You know how to spoil a girl, don’t you?” “Come on, grab your coat, better take an extra layer, best take an umbrella too.” “Anything else?” “A flask of Bovril? Oh and a woolly hat.” In no time at all the Mondeo Ghia was within striking distance of the classiest seaside town north of Liverpool (and south of Blackpool). I parked up on the coast road and after leaping acrobatically to catch my airborne umbrella, shouted over to Sarah. “Have you got any change for the machine?” “What!? The wind, I can’t-” She shook her head, no change. No matter we could pay via mobile 6

phone. Thirty minutes later I was in the newsagents changing a five pound note. “You can pay by mobile mate.” “Unfortunately I failed my computer programming A-level, so can I have five pound coins please?” At last, we were ready to explore. “So you see, the design of this street, with its wide thoroughfare, is just like the boulevards of Paris. It is said that Napoleon III lodged just off Lord Street, in 1834 I believe, and that gave him the idea-” “Tom, as fascinating as this is, can we just get out of the rain?” “Here let’s go down this side alley and get our fortune told.” “I’ll tell you what Tom, you go and get your fortune told, I’m going into Russell & Bromleys.” Refusing to be dissuaded, I popped my head through the beads hanging across the door and sat down in Madame Sylvia’s bijou front parlour, with Olly sat quietly on my knee. She took my hand in hers which was of course the signal for me to start giggling. “I would say that you are quite a happy-go-lucky person. Always smiling.” “Well fancy you knowing that?” I beamed. “Now, you haven’t got a younger brother have you?”

“No.” “Older sister?” “No. I have a younger sister and an older brother.” “Yes I thought so.” Well done Madame Sylvia, right on the money again! Leaving Madame Sylvia’s armed with the knowledge that my fortune was on its way, I met Sarah coming out of the shoe shop. Eventually, we battled our way across the coast road and found our way to Southport Pier. “Tom look at it, it’s sheeting down.” “It’s OK darling worry not, we can take the train.” And there, coming into the tiny station on the shortest bit of track known to man, was a real live proper train. “Is this the right train for the end of Southport Pier?” The exhausted driver looked at me like he hadn’t heard that joke for hours. “Ninety pence please.” At the other end of this pile of Victorian Iron we discovered a seedy amusement arcade and tatty cafe which had been refurbished completely and replaced with, er, a tatty cafe and seedy amusement arcade. We decided to sit out the storm with a restorative cuppa. Unfortunately, a stroppy little man in a hi-viz jacket and moustache

barred our way. “Sorry sir, no dogs in the cafe.” We all looked down at Olly, now soaked and shivering with the cold. “It’s OK, he’s a guide dog.” The little Jobsworth’s eyes narrowed. “Well where’s his harness and tunic?” “It’s his day off.” “His day off?” “Yes. Do you wear that tunic on your day off?” “Er, no.” “Well neither does he, now excuse us.” After our greasy Eccles cake and stewed tea we decided to head home. I made a dash for the train but it had already gone. “Blast! What time is the next one?” “I’m not sure but I think I can see it now, you know that one there, at other end of this pier?” We returned to our Mondeo Ghia only to find a nice shiny yellow parking ticket stuck onto the windscreen. “I thought you bought one?” “I thought you paid by mobile?” And the moral of this story? When a fortune teller says it’s your lucky day to go and buy a ticket, always follow her advice.

Alan Bennett’s Hit Comedy Single Spies 18th to 23rd April Main House at Salisbury Playhouse Ticket Office: 01722 320333 A new production of Alan Bennett’s hit comedy Single Spies will visit the Main House at Salisbury Playhouse from Monday 18 to Saturday 23 April 2016 in a collaboration between Chichester Festival Theatre and Birmingham Repertory Theatre. Olivier Award-nominated Rachel Kavanaugh will direct Nicholas Farrell (as Guy Burgess), Belinda Lang (as Coral Browne and Her Majesty the Queen) and David Robb (as Anthony Blunt) in an extensive UK tour. Nicholas Farrell starred as Alan Bennett in The Lady in the Van (Queen’s Theatre) and his extensive film career includes The Iron Lady, Legend and Chariots of Fire. Belinda Lang is best known for playing Bill Porter in hit TV show 2 Point 4 Children (BBC) and other screen credits include Second Thoughts (LWT), Doctors (BBC) and Midsomer Murders (ITV). She has recently appeared on stage in Oklahoma! (Northampton/tour), Ladies in Lavender (national tour), Hay Fever (Royal Exchange and Haymarket Theatre) and East is East (Birmingham Rep). David Robb is currently on screen as Dr. Clarkson in the multi-award winning drama Downton Abbey (ITV). His extensive television credits also include Wolf Hall, Roman Mysteries and Garrow’s Law (all BBC). On stage he has recently appeared in The 8

Audience (Apollo Theatre) and Hamlet (tour & West End). Bennett’s award-winning espionage double bill is a pointedly satirical snapshot of two members of the infamous ‘Cambridge Five’, Guy Burgess and Anthony Blunt, both recruited as spies by the Soviet Union during World War II. In 1950s Moscow, Coral Browne receives an invitation to lunch with shunned Soviet spy, Guy Burgess, with the sole instruction to ‘bring a tape measure’. An Englishman Abroad is a wry and touching play which chronicles the pair’s fleeting friendship and Burgess’ attempts to cling to his way of life as a Soviet citizen. A Question of Attribution gives a glimpse into Anthony Blunt’s life of espionage within the very walls of Buckingham Palace. Following his double-life as an art historian to royalty and a Soviet spy, this witty tale of forgery and deceit culminates in a sharp and candid interrogation from Her Majesty the Queen herself. Single Spies premiered at the National Theatre in 1988,

opening to critical acclaim and receiving an Olivier Award for Best New Comedy in 1990. Rachel Kavanaugh was Artistic Director of Birmingham Repertory Theatre and has directed many celebrated productions at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre including The Sound of Music, Much Ado About Nothing and As You Like It. For Chichester Festival Theatre, Kavanaugh’s Love Story was Olivier Awardnominated for Best New Musical and received a West End transfer. Single Spies visits the Main House at Salisbury Playhouse from Monday 18 April to Saturday 23 April. For tickets or further information please contact the Ticket Office on 01722 320333 or visit www.salisburyplayhouse. com.

It’s been a busy year for Dovetail Framing, which recently celebrated its first birthday. This unique business provides customers with a visit from a framing expert who helps them to make frame and mount choices and then delivers the finished product direct to the customer’s home.

Jonathan Birch

Dovetail Framing is the brainchild of former Police Inspector Jonathan Birch of Awbridge, who ended a varied career as part of the team delivering security for the 2012 London Olympic Games. “After many years in such a demanding role, I was looking for both a change of direction and a creative challenge” says Jonathan. “Prior to joining the police I ran a successful framing business. I wanted to further develop my expertise in this area, while designing a business centred around the customer”. Dovetail Framing offers both convenience and the ability to make framing choices with reference to home décor and surroundings. Jonathan visits customers, including professional artists, in their homes, offices or studios, and spends as much time as necessary making sure they choose the right mount and frame. Once an order has been taken, items are taken to the workshop for completion and delivered back to the customer once finished. Visits are without obligation, and no extra charge is made for this service. As well as paintings, prints, drawings and certificates, Jonathan has also framed a number of more unusual items. These include record sleeves, fishing flies, football shirts, badges, medals, and even a bag of fairy dust! “One of my customers had organised a ‘Frozen’ party for his grand-daughter, which resulted in her receiving a certificate and a vial of ‘fairy dust’ in a bag” says Jonathan. “I hand-finished a frame in exactly the right colour to match, and displayed the certificate and the vial in a shadow box, much to her delight!” Jonathan is enthusiastic about the future. “I have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know my customers and bringing their projects to fruition and am looking forward to meeting many more in the coming year. Call me on 01794 341274 or visit the website at www.dovetailframing.co.uk and I’ll be happy to help”.

RECIPE

Iced Orange Bundt Cake This delicious citrus flavoured sponge is made in a classic ring-shaped bundt tin. You’ll find them in most good cook shops and larger supermarkets, or you can use an ordinary 1.5L capacity ring mould tin instead.

Ingredients: • 200g unsalted butter, softened, plus extra for greasing • 300g self-raising flour, plus extra for dusting • 200g caster sugar • 3 large eggs, beaten • 1/2 tsp baking powder • Finely grated zest of 1 large orange • 100ml fresh orange juice • 100-150ml milk

FOR THE ICING • 100g icing sugar • Approx 2 tbsp fresh orange juice

Serves 10 Ready in 1 hour 30 minutes, plus cooling and setting times 12

1. Preheat the oven to 170C, 325F, Gas 3. Thoroughly grease a 22-23cm Bundt tin (measured across the top) with butter then lightly dust with flour, tipping out the excess.

2. Put the butter and sugar in a large bowl and beat

together until pale and creamy. Gradually beat in the eggs, then sift over the flour and baking powder and fold in along with the orange zest and juice. Fold in enough of the milk to give a soft dropping consistency.

3. Spoon the cake mixture into the prepared tin and

gently level the surface. Bake in the preheated oven for 40-50 minutes, or until the cake is risen and golden and a skewer inserted into the cake comes out clean. Leave to cool in the tin for 5 minutes then carefully turn out onto a wire rack and leave to cool completely.

4. For the icing, sift the icing sugar into a bowl then beat

in the orange juice to make a smooth and thick icing. Drizzle the icing over the top of the cake, letting it drizzle down the sides. Leave in a cool place until set.

TIP

Make sure to grease and flour the bundt tin thoroughly or you may find it tricky to turn the cake out. Use the tip of a small palette knife or silicon spatula to gently loosen the edges of the cake first.

The Test Valley Croquet Club Our local croquet club will soon be restarting for April to September inclusive. Normally play is at Hunts Farm Sports Field between 13:45 & 16:30 on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. We are an informal and relaxed club where no one need feel daunted by an excess of zeal or any form of snobbery. We are ordinary folk and many of us are, quite frankly, past our prime for other sports but age is almost irrelevant with croquet. There are a few techniques to learn, like how to make your ball jump, but it is largely a matter of tactics and careful aim. New players of all ages and all abilities are very welcome. All necessary equipment and tuition is provided. Your first two sessions are absolutely free. If you do wish to become competitive, there are club and inter-club competitions that you may enter when you feel ready. We play both Golf Croquet and Association Croquet. Top Tyre Care Tips Iain Betson goes tyre kicking Having just forked out £450 for three tyres on the car - no it’s not a Reliant Robin; fate being what it is I fully expect the fourth one to go pop in the near future - right now I am in a zone of “tyre care awareness”. Sad I know, but if it saves me having to replace tyres on a regular basis then so be it. So here are some nuggets of tyre wisdom I’ve learnt and pass to you: 1. Use the correct pressures, and change them depending upon your load (increase for heavy use, reduce for everyday journeys). Doing this will improve stability, save fuel and prolong the tyre’s life. 2. Tread wear: check the tread wear indicators – raised areas at the base of the grooves of the tread. If the tread is level with

the indicator you have only 1.6mm of tread left. Under that and it’s a fine and three points per illegal tyre. 3. Putting nitrogen instead of air in the tyre increases its life and saves fuel as it lessens the rolling resistance by dispersing heat more effectively. 4. Avoid those kerbs: hitting them will damage the tyre side wall, with a cut or bulge raising the risk of a blowout. 5. Potholes: do your best to avoid them safely. Hitting these will damage the tyre and, quite possibly, the wheel too, especially if you have “run-flat” tyres as they have very little give in the sidewall, meaning the wheel takes more punishment. A replacement wheel is a lot more expensive than a tyre. 6. If your car has traction control, changing just one tyre can make the system behave oddly as it receives conflicting information from the different tread depths, and thus grip, on the tyres. In some cases it will even inhibit the car’s performance as it attempts to keep the car safe from what it perceives is a dangerous condition.

GARDENING

Vertical Cover With Climbers by Pippa Greenwood www.pippagreenwood.com Blue Clematis

Take a look at the boundaries of your garden; are they rather uninteresting, drab or perhaps even downright boring? It is time to start thinking about doing some vertical gardening - don’t just concentrate on beds, borders and beautiful containers, but think about all those upright surfaces just itching to be clothed in glorious climbers or wall shrubs. If you have several vertical surfaces then so much the better.

A visit to your local garden centre will reveal a plentiful supply of suitable plants. Start by taking a look at the surface you have to offer, get a rough idea of the size of the area to be covered, the direction it faces and the amount of sun or shade the plants growing on the wall or fence are likely to receive. Check your soil type too – discover whether it is sandy and free-draining, sticky and full of clay or somewhere in between as the plant you choose must be suited to the site. Some climbers are quite quick growing and will look good later this year, and then go from strength to strength as the years pass. Many provide strong colour and others will be a useful backdrop for the garden as a whole. Don’t forget that most buildings can have climbers grown against them, so if you have an unsightly shed, garage or even a fairly uninteresting looking back to your house, then consider erecting some sort of support system on which you can grow your climbers. If you have a long stretch of wall you can break up its monotony by planting up with several

20

different plants. If you grow a wide range of plants and only allow them to reach the height of the first floor, it will make a tall, narrow building seem somewhat broader. A climbing hydrangea, Hydrangea petiolaris, or self-clinging plants such as ivies are ideal for this situation, but make sure the mortar on your wall is in good shape before planting. Climbers are best planted in open ground, as they tend to have sizeable root systems. However, you can grow them in containers if you get really stuck, but make sure that you re-pot regularly and that you have enough space to ultimately use a really good sized container such as a half barrel. You will need to use a loam-based potting compost and add extra grit to ensure that the compost continues to drain freely. It is also essential to place a really deep layer of crocks at the base of the container so that the drainage holes are loosely covered and will not become clogged by the compost. I always add some controlled release fertilizer granules to the compost, as this will help to ensure that plants get

tterns

adequately fed at least for the first few months. If you plant the container up using a triangular or V-shaped trellis panel inserted at the back surface, this will give the plant an initial support and it can then climb up this before moving on to your wall or fence. You will, of course, need to tie the top section of the trellis into the wall or fence, so that it does not rock about. Once you have decided where to plant the climber, dig a really good sized planting hole, making sure that it is at least 18 inches (45 cm) away from the wall or fence. This may sound like a long way, but it ensures that the plant receives adequate moisture and does not suffer any adverse effects from the proximity of the nearby wall. Incorporate plenty of planting compost, well rotted manure or garden compost,

and then once you have soaked the root ball of the plant you can place it in the hole. Ideally you should position it at a 45 degree angle, so that it is already leaning towards the wall. Once you have checked that the levels are right you can spread the root system out and plant in the normal way. If your climber is already attached to some sort of support system, such as bamboo canes, it helps if you gently untie the stems from any central stake and then choose the best looking shoots and train these towards your new support system. You can use the existing bamboo canes to help it on its way. It is essential to keep climbers really well watered, particularly if they are on or near a sunny wall. Any good garden centre will have a range of plants available, but here are some suggestions for
