Getting Things Done
Melanie Tinson & Tania Houston
A few years ago I bought a book called Getting Things Done by David Allen. I read a bit of it, but the irony of not having finished it isn’t lost on me. Chapter 1 should have been “How to get to the end of this book”. But even though like most people I manage to do most that I need to, I find it hard to drive myself to finish every last outstanding task. That is, if it’s a little job – say, paying a bill – I’ll do it there and then. But anything like stopping a mobile phone contract or a Sky subscription is really painful and time-consuming. I’ve just tried to change a phone from a contract to a payand-go arrangement and it was a full 45 minutes, with me repeatedly saying “no thank you, I don’t want a new contract, I just want pay-and-go”. It’s exhausting. And buying something…we have so much choice, I find myself bamboozled by the options, and stymied by indecision. But as much as I dislike pushing myself to ‘get things done’, the sense of satisfaction once the call has been made, or the item purchased is fabulous. Procrastination fills your headspace, and frankly there so much already in there, I can’t afford to keep anything more. I read an excellent and amusing article online recently, which talked about why we procrastinate, and importantly what to do about it. The author openly acknowledges he is a procrastinator himself, so he certainly wasn’t being smug about it. You can read this yourself at http://tiny.cc/postponing.

Accident? You Mean Collision Iain Betson learns there are no accidents on Britain’s roads. Speaking to a Highways Agency officer the other day, I was intrigued to learn that the emergency services now do not class “incidents” on the road as “accidents”, but as “collisions”. Previously, they would have attended a “Road Traffic Accident” (RTA). Now they attend a “Road Traffic Collision” or RTC. Why the subtle change in wording? Well, the use of the word “accident” implies something that was unexpected, unforeseen or that “just happened”. And calling these incidents as such has been used as a defence in a court of law. “Yes your honour. I know I was clocked by the speed camera doing 60mph in a 30mph zone. It is true I
was pulled by the fire crew from my wrecked car that was part of the multiple pile-up outside the primary school at going home time. And I know my car was subsequently found to have four bald tyres, no insurance and dodgy brakes. But the whole event was classed as a traffic accident, so you can see I couldn’t have foreseen any of it happening. So, therefore, I am innocent of all charges.” Accident or incident. Collision or coming together. You say tomaytoe and I say tomato. It may be interpretation but, ultimately, the results are the same. If we all took a little more consideration and, dare I say, care in our driving, then I think it’s likely the number of “collisions” our already stretched emergency services have to attend would be reduced. With, of course, a corresponding drop in the number of people killed or seriously injured.*
*Department of Transport figures for 2014: 1,775 killed; 22,807 seriously injured.

GARDENING
Feathered Friends by Pippa Greenwood www.pippagreenwood.com
Watching wild birds in your garden is a real delight, and the fact that many of them also help to keep pests at bay for much of the year means that it makes sense to do everything you can to encourage them in.
Gardens which are very regimented and sparse are much less likely to prove a haven for wild birds, but if you have a fair number of potential hiding places such as a few good sized shrubs or trees, then so much the better. Obviously trees which provide berries or other fruits are always going to be welcome and, although it means that the display of autumnal berries you looked forward to is slightly foreshortened, you can be sure that the birds eating them will have put them to good use! But what else can you do to encourage your feathered friends into the garden? There is no doubt about it that a source of water really is one of the best features you can have. There are many ornamental birdbaths available, or you can create something cheap and just as effective using a shallow dish with sloping sides. The water should be no deeper than 2” (5 cm) if it is to be safely used by a wide range of birds, and if you do have a deeper container then you should fill the lower depths of it with good sized stones, so that the water is not too deep. Ideally the water should be
8
changed every other day, but at this time of year when freezing temperatures prevail, it is essential to make sure that the water does not become frozen over for long periods of time. Don’t forget that other garden water features, including ponds with shallow sloping sides, are perfect for many birds to feed and bathe in. Providing birds with additional food materials is also well worthwhile, but do remember that you need to maintain a constant supply of food or else they may come to rely on something that is not there when they need it most. If you have a problem with squirrels, then feeding the birds can be a real nightmare – but on the whole, the heavily armoured looking wire structures which rather resemble bird cages and hold a central cylinder of peanuts seem to work well. Admittedly these will set you back anything up to £40, but they do seem to do the job. If squirrels are not a problem, you can use many of the cheaper nut feeders with great success, but of course wherever you position the feeder you should ensure that it is well out of range of the local cat
population. Site the feeder in an area where a cat cannot leap up at it, or where there are no other plants nearby from which it can make its ambush. Save household scraps for the birds too; there are lots of things they enjoy eating including apples which have lost their appeal to the household, cooked rice, cheese, old breakfast cereal, raisins and sultanas and, of course, bread. You can also buy fat balls which contain large quantities of mixed seeds, and these can be hung from trees or large shrubs where they will provide a fantastic meal for many birds and, provided you position them in a suitable spot, means that you can also enjoy watching them as they feed. Having once found a blue-tit caught by the foot in a fat ball’s net, I now only
buy the net-free fat balls. Luckily I happened to pass the feeder soon after the bird had been trapped, so was able to cut it free, but the outcome could have been tragic! If you wish, and if you have a strong enough stomach, you can buy numerous grubs and larvae which you can feed to the birds. These high protein bird snacks are particularly useful for birds once they start feeding their young in the spring and are best distributed on a bird table or even on a garage roof. They are available by mail order from various companies as well as in garden centres and pet shops.
accessible by cats, and position it in a place where you can sit indoors or on a garden seat and watch the birds as they feed and drink. I mainly feed the birds on top of an old, established hedge. It is just tall enough for me to reach its flat clipped top surface and I put out bird food on flat wooden trays – perfect for me to view and impossible for cats to get the wrong idea about who is meant to be eating!
If you feel like making or buying a bird table on which to set out the feasts you are supplying, then so much the better. Remember to choose one which is not easily

Heat half the oil in a large heavy-based pan over a medium-high heat. Add half the lamb pieces and fry for 3-4 minutes, turning occasionally until browned and sealed all over. Remove the lamb with a slotted spoon and set aside. Add the rest of the oil and fry the rest of the lamb pieces in the same way.
2.
Add the onion and garlic (and a splash more oil, if needed) and fry over a medium heat, stirring occasionally for 3-4 minutes, then stir in the curry paste and fry for a further minute until fragrant. Return the meat to the pan and stir to coat in the curry paste.
3.
Stir in the chopped tomatoes, 300ml cold water and the lentils. Reduce the heat then cover and simmer for about 30 minutes, or until the lentils are soft and the meat is tender. Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper.
4.
Stir in the spinach and coriander. Cover and cook for a further 2-3 minutes until the spinach has just wilted. Serve with the boiled basmati rice and lemon wedges.
• 2 tbsp oil • 600g lean lamb steaks, cut into chunks • 1 garlic clove, peeled and crushed • 1 large onion, peeled and chopped • 6 tbsp balti curry paste • 75g red split lentils • 400g can chopped tomatoes • 200g baby spinach leaves • 2 tbsp chopped fresh coriander • Boiled basmati rice and lemon wedges to serve
Ready in 55 minutes For a spicier flavour replace the balti curry paste with one that has a little more heat such as Madras. Adding some finely chopped red chilli when frying the onion will also boost the heat factor!

Memories and Hopes When the Langley Wood volunteers were asked what they enjoyed most about the wood in 2015 and what they were looking forward to in 2016, most said something like "The cake with our coffee. And more cake next year." But also: R says: "I've been pleased with the areas we deer-fenced last year showing such good regeneration, compared to the deer-browsed area of woodland. "I'm looking forward to completing a whole section of rhododendron removal, as part of the longterm renewal of the ground flora." J agrees, adding "I'm looking forward to seeing the bluebells again in 2016, and I'd like to
replant some of the gaps in the wood with Langley oak saplings." "Personally I think the best thing we did was build those windrows [long piles of brash, good shelter for insects, birds, small mammals] where we felled the larch last winter," says G. "That parcel of ground should become good for butterflies." N's highlight of 2015 was the day we moved a huge chestnut log across the wood, dragging it along on rollers. We spend a lot of time keeping the public paths usable. "Clearing fallen trees from the Circular Walk and training the Dexter bullocks to come to the bucket were things I enjoyed," says W. "Next year it has to be setting up a bat hibernaculum."
The Dexters grazed a special deer-proof enclosure in the wood for a while, as part of ongoing research into the effects of their munching. "The Dexters were the highlight for me because the deer-fenced pen is developing into fantastic habitat, and shows how amazing the Mary’s Walk wood-pasture area could be," says Stuart Hales, Senior Reserves Manager for Wiltshire. "My hope for 2016 is that we start to see a reduction in deer browsing and that we get the funds to erect a cattle fence around the wood pasture."

And Another Thing... The Winged Chariot by Tom Hughes Follow Tom @groomsdaybook
I dread January. Not because of the long winter nights or postholiday credit card bills (although they aren’t much fun), I hate New Year because that’s when the Mondeo has its dreaded MOT. Could I squeeze another year’s motoring out of the old darling? The mechanic’s intake of breath was so sharp I thought he was going to hyperventilate. MOT fail! Now, I’m sure that to Jeremy Clarkson my Mondeo Ghia X is a tired old rep mobile, good only for slogging up and down the M6 driven by some dulleyed paperclip salesman. But whenever I nestle behind the wheel (in my half leather heated seat) I am not in a Ford, rather I am in a beautiful Winged Chariot, perfect for whisking Sarah away to distant magical places, like Southport. The mechanic shook his head as the bonnet slammed shut. Sarah put a comforting hand on my shoulder. It was time to face facts; the old chap had to go. And that meant only one thing - a visit to the showroom to lock horns with a car salesman. Colin was an affable chap. As wide as he was tall, he possessed a big red face and the worst fitting suit I had ever seen. He came waddling towards us with such a swagger in his gait I 24
thought for moment he was going to announce “I’ve come for ma Boy.” He shook my hand, nodded to my car and said, “That your Deo? Great car....in its day.” “In its day? Cheeky -” I was about to give him a mouthful when Sarah interrupted me, “Shut up Tom. Now what about this one?” Sarah pointed to a new five door hatchback. Colin beamed.”Want to take her for a spin sir?” “Her? That’s a bit 1970s isn’t it? Why can’t I take “him” for a spin?” I said indignantly. “Very well sir, I’ll get the trade plates.” He glanced at Sarah, shook his head in sympathy, and handed me the keys. With Sarah sat demurely in the back we eased out of the showroom as Colin explained all about this fantastic motor. “Now Tom, this model is in the Elite trim which means that every conceivable toy is on this car. Everything you can think of as an extra, this baby’s got it.” I stared at the dashboard. “Has it got Sat Nav?” “No.” “Climate control?” “Er, no.” “Rear parking sensors?”
Suddenly, Colin’s eyes lit up. “Rear parking sensors? Tom, can you just pull over a second and put her in reverse gear for me?” I stopped the car and engaged reverse as Colin jumped out and ran to the back of the motor. I looked in the rear view mirror and saw Colin waggling his hips and waving his arms about. “Tom, what is he doing?” “I’ve really no idea.” After this strange display was over, he trotted up to the driver’s side, stuck his sweaty face through the open window and asked hopefully “Now Tom, did you hear a beep! Beep! Beep!?” “No.” Back in the car and now staring straight ahead, Colin, through gritted teeth said, “Drive on please.” After a while, we found ourselves on a narrow country road where Colin, with a conspiratorial wink whispered, “Now then Tom, do you want to see how she performs through the twisty bits?” Too embarrassed to ask what that actually meant, I smiled and began trundling along the B road, nervously creeping round an endless procession of blind bends. Exasperated, Colin began shuffling about in his seat.

“Now Tom, can’t you feel it? She wants to go, come on, give her her head!” I looked in the mirror at Sarah, who shrugged her shoulders. Colin was insistent, “Put your foot down, let’s see what this baby can do!” The engine whined as I stamped on the pedal. The bonnet lifted and the car lurched forward as around the corner we went - “Tally Ho!” Later, after Colin had exchanged insurance details with a rather miserable looking farmer, Sarah leaned down to inspect the damage. “Well a tinny thing like this is always going to come off worse against a tractor.” Waiting with Colin for that tow truck to take us back to the garage was the longest hour of my life. And so, after shelling out a small fortune on a double-wishbone something or other, my beloved Winged Chariot was back on the road. I took Sarah for a spin. I turned up the climate control to maximum. “Right Sarah darling, shall we see what this baby can do?” “Tom, just keep your eyes on the road, OK? And Tom?” “Yes my sweet?” “Keep a look out for tractors?”
