SP5 & Test Valley’s No 1 Community Magazine 11 local editions 145,000 circulation

Melanie Tinson & Tania Houston

This will be the first time you have received a copy of Discover, your new local community magazine for the residents of SO20 and SP5. Although Discover is new to you, we are not new to running magazines. We started in 2004 with our first edition in Chandlers Ford, and now have 11 very local editions reaching over 140,000 households in the Solent region. With this coverage, you might imagine we are some national company with big flashy offices, but far from it. There’s me Tania, Melanie who manages our sales and marketing, Lee and Heather our talented designers, and Izzy our magazine co-ordinator who is the contact for community news and events. We love including ‘what’s on’ features and always include as much as we can, particularly free, charity or low cost so do send them in (details on the left). The SP5 and Test Valley area is a beautiful, rural part of the country. However that makes door to door delivery a real challenge, so we use Royal Mail to ensure everybody receives a copy. You can expect to receive your magazine with your daily post around the last week of every other month (July, September, November etc). Finally, your Discover magazine is made possible with the investment of its advertisers. It’s local business that keeps an community alive so they really appreciate your support. Until next time.

GARDENING

Keeping Healthy in the Sun by Pippa Greenwood www.pippagreenwood.com

There is something lovely about this part of the summer. The veg plot tends to be in overdrive and there are some delicious fruits cropping too. But sometimes your beloved flower beds and borders, pots and planters can be looking ever-so-slightly sorry for themselves. There is often a distinct midsummer-flop.

You planted up your flower beds and numerous pots and containers to make them look good but how can you keep them looking on top form for as long as possible? Regular feeding is essential, particularly for anything growing in a container. Often crammed into a fairly small space and with compost whose fertiliser content is pretty well used up after a few weeks, by July plants in pots can be close to starving if you’ve not fed them regularly. At this time of year I would still feed herbaceous perennials and annuals growing in open ground too, but I suggest you resist the temptation to feed shrubs as these could be encouraged to put on new growth which will not be toughened up enough by the time winter comes; this late growth is then very prone to frost damage. A tomato feed with a high potash level works well for anything that you grow primarily for the flowers so every time you feed your tomatoes make up a bit of extra feed and pop it onto flowering plants. I tend to buy concentrated tomato food by the mini-tanker full as this works out much more economical! Make sure that everything is deadheaded regularly, both the faded flowers and if necessary remove the flower stem too. On

6

soft stemmed plants you may be able to make to do it using your thumb nail, but a pair of sharp scissors or similar often makes for the quickest, neatest and least messy job. Do this as soon as the flower starts to deteriorate so that no energy whatsoever is used to form seed heads and it will make a huge difference to the performance you see the plants put on over the next few weeks. I am a great believer in the ‘hair cut’ approach where perennials are given a trim using scissors or shears as soon as their flowering period is over. Do this promptly and follow it with a good feed and you can often encourage a second, later flush of flowers too. If plants have become a little too tall or there has been a lot of rainfall they can literally flop over, clogging up the lawn on borders next to the grass, and generally looking a real mess. This is easily solved if you check that stakes and other supports are still doing their job and re-position them if necessary, taking care not to snap any flower stems in the process. You may even find that you need to add a bit of extra support or tie in a few of the taller or more wayward stems – the foamcovered wire works really well for this.

At this time of year many flowers succumb to common diseases. This is how to deal with them: Powdery Mildew Keep the plant well watered at the base but avoid wetting the leaves and spray with a suitable fungicide if necessary

Aphids Remove with a strong jet of water, introduce ladybirds or spray with an insecticide

Leaf spots Just pick off the worst affected leaves

Rusts Pick off the worst affected leaves, try to keep the foliage dry and spray with a suitable insecticide

Caterpillars Pick off by hand or spray with a

suitable biological or chemical control Keeping on top of these small problems is essential - regular checks should allow you to take prompt action, so avoiding too much damage occurring and often meaning that you do not even need to spray. Weeds tend to be growing rapidly too, so try to remove these as they make for a lot of competition for water, food and even light. Pulling them out or hoeing them off when they are still fairly small is a much easier and more efficient way to deal with them than trying to pull out a massive, long-rooted triffid that has already done a lot of damage.

To minimise water wastage and the risk of those delicate petals becoming scorched, I suggest that you should only water in the evening or, if this is not possible, very early in the morning. A less frequent but thorough drenching is a lot more beneficial than very frequent but light waterings. So, with a little extra TLC everything in the garden can still look gorgeous for a long while yet!

If the weather is dry, regular watering will also help to keep your flower beds and containers looking their best.

Salisbury Contemporary Craft & Heritage Festival Fabulously sited beneath the cathedral's soaring spire, the Salisbury Contemporary Craft & Heritage Festival returns to showcase the best craftmakers in the UK, whilst at the same time providing a fun-filled day for all the family! Over 100 of the UK's top designer-makers will gather under a marquee on the West Lawn of the grounds of Salisbury’s medieval cathedral, selling exquisite handmade textiles,

furniture, glassware, metalwork, jewelry, ceramics and more. There is also a lively programme of talks, tours, workshops and trails alongside the exhibitor marquees, so visitors can explore the setting, try their hand at the demonstration and workshop stands (such as weaving, wood turning, stone etching) and buy from the best in their field. The Salisbury Contemporary Craft & Heritage Festival is returning for its second year

on the weekend of 5th and 6th September and the organisers, Salisbury Rotary Club, are expecting over 5,000 visitors. Tickets cover the whole weekend and include all the workshops, tours, talks and trails – as well as access to the craft marquees. Festivals with a 12

You might imagine that all music festivals are versions of the televised Glastonbury Festival. All the beautiful young things dancing to the latest music, some of which an older generation may not recognise as music at all! Yes, there are some huge festivals taking place this summer, attracting the very top bands and with prices to match. But there are far more smaller events taking place which are targeted at families and/or an older audience, which are very affordable and, best of all, are local. A little bit of knowledge goes a long way so here are a couple of tips:

r Don’t judge an event purely by the headline acts - some of the best performances come from little-known names. And if there is more than one stage you’ll have a choice of artists to watch throughout the day.

r Do your homework by going to Youtube,

Soundcloud or a music streaming site, and getting a taste of the particular acts that you might want to see

r Travel light if you can. If the event has

several stages you’ll want to move without having to take a pile of stuff with you

r Take a jumper or a jacket you can tie round your waist (and sit on if the ground is dry), rather than a coat you have to carry

r Don’t wear white – festivals

are always on fields, festival food doesn’t often involve cutlery and people do spill drinks

r You’ll be walking before, dancing

Music in the City; Southampton 3 & 4 October www. musicinthecitysouthampton.org

Right Side of the Road Taking your car to Europe means you can avoid exorbitant airfares, hidden airport and airline costs, and expensive duty-free. And don’t get me started on airport crowds and stress. However, before setting off for the continent in your car, there are a number of boxes you should tick before you get behind the wheel. Here’s a very simple checklist… • Ensure all car documents are up to date, including the insurance papers and V5c ownership document. Take both parts of drivers’ licences for all appointed drivers. • Book an off-schedule MOT, it will throw up any mechanical or electrical problems to be attended to. In many European countries, it is illegal to drive with a broken exterior light for instance. Packing a full replacement bulb kit is worthwhile, too. • Take an emergency warning triangle (two in Spain) and a hi-vis jacket (some countries require a vest for each passenger, too). If you are driving in France, breathalysers are still on the legal list of items that you are required to have in the car, but there is NO FINE for not having them. • British cars should wear a GB sticker on the back to identify their country of origin, OR have Europlates bearing the blue GB symbol. • You will also need to adapt your headlights to avoid dazzling oncoming vehicles. You can buy conversion kits, or your main dealer may be able to adjust the beam.

RECIPE

Veggie Bean Burgers Makes 8

Packed with flavour these burgers will be enjoyed by both meat-eaters and vegetarians. For a lovely nutty texture replace the sweetcorn with 100g chopped walnuts.

Ingredients: • • • • • • • • • • • • •

3 tbsp olive oil 1 large red onion, peeled and finely chopped 2 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed 4 spring onions, trimmed and finely chopped 1 carrot, peeled and grated 2 tsp chilli powder 2 x 400g cans mixed bean salad, drained and rinsed 100g canned sweetcorn, drained 100g fresh breadcrumbs 1 large egg 1 tbsp lime juice 4 tbsp fresh chopped coriander (or parsley) Toasted burger buns, baby spinach leaves and sliced tomatoes, to serve

Ready in 40 minutes, plus chilling The uncooked burgers freeze well, just place on a lined baking tray and freeze until solid then pack away into freezer bags. To cook from frozen, place the burgers on a lined baking tray, brush lightly with oil and bake for 25-30 minutes at 200C, fan 180C, Gas 6 until golden and piping hot.

TIP

16

1. Heat 1 tbsp of the oil in a frying pan and fry the chopped onion over a medium heat for 8-10 minutes until soft and golden. Add the garlic, spring onions and carrots and fry, stirring, for a further 2-3 minutes. Stir in the chilli powder.

2. Tip all the beans into a large bowl and roughly mash with a fork. Stir in the onion mixture along with the remaining ingredients and mix well to combine. Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper.

3. Divide and shape the mixture into 8 burgers. Cover and chill in the fridge for at least 30 minutes.

4. Heat the rest of the oil in a large nonstick frying pan over a medium heat and fry the burgers for 3-4 minutes on each side until golden brown (you may need to do this in two batches so add a little more oil, if needed). Drain on kitchen paper then serve in toasted burgers buns with spinach leaves and sliced tomatoes.

The Children’s Sherfield Community English Garden The Children's Garden started in Sherfield English as a Community project in 2007 at The Gilbert's Nursery and is now in its 8th year. Children aged 4+ from Sherfield English and the neighbouring villages come to The Garden every Saturday from 10 am to 12 noon between March and November where they have fun growing food on their own individual plot. Over the past 7 years with funding from the Parish Council, TVBC, Hampshire County Council and the members of the local community the Garden has developed into a pleasant

environment featuring a potting shed, a pond with solar powered fountain (pond dipping is a favourite pastime), a polytunnel and a recent addition of a greenhouse clad with recycled plastic bottles . They also grow soft fruit, have a few fruit trees and even a composting facility. Midway through the session children have a break with refreshments provided by Gilbert Nursery. They finish in November at the end of the growing season with a Hallowee'n Party. The Children’s Garden are always looking for a new intake every year, so if you have a child interested in gardening in the company of other children in a friendly outdoor environment, bring him/her along on a Saturday morning at 10.00 am.

INTERVIEW

Leona Lewis X Factor winner, Leona Lewis, is back with a new single, album and tour. The Evening Breeze’s Lucy Ambache caught up with her.

to leave. Although it’s scary, I think it’s a good thing.

So you’ve signed with a new record label. Is that like the first day of school?

Because I still think of you in the ballad niche. Is that annoying?

It’s just a whole new vibe and energy. The team are amazing it’s been really good! And what was it like parting with Simon Cowell. Was it difficult? Yeah it was. Because we’d worked together for years and he’s been amazing to me. Simon’s not there on the ground A & R’ing my records with me. At first he was more but X Factor’s now in a thousand million different countries and he’s all over the place and it’s difficult to pin him down and I just needed to do my own thing, and go my own way. But I still have so much love for him and we’ve got a good relationship still.

So let’s talk about ‘Fire Under My Feet’. It’s uplifting, it’s got a bit of gospel feel, it’s very earthy and very free which is what I love about it.

No because I still have those ballads on (the album) and I love singing those songs. There’s an amazing song by Dianne Warren on the CD that I really love, and that’s a huge ballad so there’s still that sort of thing there. You’ve an amazing mezzo soprano voice which spans four octaves. What do you think is special about your vocal range? I was classically trained which I suppose helps. I thought I was going to be an opera singer and so did my mum.

Would you go back to opera? I still do opera. I’ve recorded a couple of classical songs and I love the training behind it and the discipline. I think it’s a great foundation for any singer. You strike me as a shy person so how do you feel when you go on stage? I’ve been performing for such a long time that it feels natural and something that I do. You’re alright with 20,000 people staring at you? I’ve been alright so far. I still get nervous of course but somehow I get through it. I love what I do! You are a fellow vegetarian. Since you were twelve? Yeah What made you turn to vegetarianism? Once I knew that the sausage was a pig, I was like “no no.. no thank you”. What about when you go around to people’s houses? Do you ever feel bad? I do!

How do you take that moment and take that deep breath?

I get that when I go round to my sister’s in law! (laughs)

Usually it takes something quite drastic to happen and I felt it did take that with me in that what sparked me to leave was that I was told I had to do a record of covers which I didn’t want to do. And it just wasn’t me. So that sparked me

BEAUTY

Festival Frenzy By Kate Duggan Ah we do love a good festival. Whether you’re off to Leeds to watch Mumford & Sons, heading to Sundown for a spot of glamping, or taking the whole family to Camp Bestival, you can’t beat a festival for creating some long-lasting memories of summer.

While you don’t need to pack your full make-up bag, there are still a few beauty essentials you’ll want to squash into your rucksack. Trying to keep your cool on a sweltering summer’s day, surrounded by a few thousand people, is not an easy task. A re-usable water bottle and pocket fan are pretty much essential, but you may also want to add Green People Toning Hydrating Mist to your arsenal. A lot of toning mists are formulated with alcohol, so can actually dry your skin out even more, but this one is alcoholfree and contains aloe vera, orange blossom, rose water and marshmallow extracts to give your skin a real hydration boost. It’s wonderfully refreshing and also ideal for long-haul flights and taking the burn out of shaving. A bottle costs £13.95 from www.greenpeople.co.uk and should last you for most of the summer. A good suntan lotion, that offers both UVA and UVB protection,

is vital, but even if you are religious about avoiding sunburn, it’s still worth having a decent aftersun to hand. We like Hawaiian Tropic After Sun Cooling Aloe Gel, which (as you’ve probably guessed) contains aloe vera, along with a vitamin A & E complex. As well as soothing sunburn, it helps to prevent peeling, eases the itch of insect bites and hydrates your skin. It can feel a bit sticky, but it gets the job done. Pick it up for just £5 from www.FragranceDirect. co.uk If you’re planning to slum it in with the other campers, you might want to take a packet of baby wipes to freshen up between showers. Baby wipes can be a bit too harsh for your face though, so if you have space, pack some Pacifica Coconut Cleansing Wipes. One of my own personal beauty

And Another Thing... by Tom Hughes I am getting married. This year. To a woman. Things are being set in motion, heads of steam are building, snowballs are rolling, rabbits are running. You get the picture. Sarah and I (or is it me and Sarah? I never know) met when we were old enough to know better, and fell in love anyway. But what started as a “bit of a do” has morphed into something much, much bigger. Where to start? Shoes, let’s start with the shoes. What is it about shoes and women? I have a pair of black shiny loafers for work. In fact I have three pairs. I also have a pair of brown slip-ons that I step into to go for the milk and the paper. The back of them are squashed down because sometimes I can’t be bothered putting them on properly if I’m say, just putting the bins out. The trainers I wear to go the gym are so tatty I think even the tramp in the precinct would turn his nose up at them. 30

What I’m saying is that the look I strive for daily is shabby chic. Ok, just shabby then. But as I recently discovered, shoes for women are a completely different kettle of battered cod altogether. If weddings send women funny, then wedding shoes send them to planet Giggly Girly. Because I wanted Sarah’s day to be special, I needed to make sure that everything was perfect from the ground up. So we toddle off into Manchester. Ok, so how difficult can it be? You can’t bloomin’ move for shoe shops. We wouldn’t be long surely? Sarah had a spring in her step as we marched determinedly past Clarks, Footlocker and all the other shoe wear emporiums that I have never seen the inside of. Then we stopped outside a posh looking outlet called Selfridges. After dodging the scary looking perfume sprayers prowling the make-up department, we arrived at the shoe concession, where we were suddenly surrounded by gorgeousness. Casually, I turned over one of the stilettoes. Oh, I thought to myself, that must be a European

size….495. I put my glasses on – 495 quid!? The room started to spin. I looked up to see Sarah deep in conversation with a handsome young man who was holding up a pair of sparkly shoes so delicate and strappy that they were almost invisible to the naked eye. Usually, if I see Sarah giggling and smiling with a good looking guy I get jealous. But when he stood up and did a little twirl of delight, I began to relax. I sat down next to a misty eyed Sarah who held up a shiny pink box and said, “Darling, these are the ones.” Do you remember the scene at the end of Pulp Fiction when Tim Roth opens the briefcase and a golden light shines out? A similar thing happened in Selfridges. The lid fell away and there they were, laying together like two perfect sparkly poodles. “Hello Tom, we are the Choo twins. My name is Jimmy and this is my brother - he’s called Jimmy Choo!” Sarah tried them on. She walked up and down, they did look amazing on her. “Can I have them, please?” “If it’s what you want darling, you

can have them.”

“Over here, next to my thumb.”

Sarah hugged me tight. She broke away, I saw tears in her eyes. The handsome guy who sold them to her looked like he was about to sob with joy. They were wrapped and taken to the till where I handed over my card. And then, as the pretty girl keyed in the price, I started crying too.

“Oh that? And how –“

Ok, that was that. The pain was just about bearable. I had survived. Or had I? Imagine a boxer against the ropes, his gum shield is out and the towel is on the canvas. Do the punches stop landing? Not a bit of it.

“Three hundred quid.” “A bargain, I’ll take two.” “Don’t be funny.” My squashed down slip ons didn’t come with a matching flat cap. There isn’t a matching pair of gloves to go with my corduroy trousers. But maybe it’s just because I don’t do co-ordination. Not really what your bride wants to hear when she is planning a wedding, is it? To be honest, I always thought

“Tom darling, this is the bag that goes with the shoes, isn’t it lovely?”

“Ooh Tom, that looks absolutely lovely on you, don’t you think?” “Do you know something Sarah? I think I could get used to this twirling business….”

Tom Hughes is a writer from the North of England. Befuddled and bemused by the modern world, Tom, when he has nothing better to do (which is most of the time) likes to commit his musings to paper. Follow Tom and Sarah’s wedding at groomsdaybook.com

“Where? Where is this bag?” “Here, here in my hand.” “Where in your hand?”

that me and fashion were strangers. That is until we left the shoe concession and went to choose my outfit. The fabulous gentleman in the menswear department could just see me in a slim fitting Hugo Boss. He picked out my suit, stood me in front of a full length mirror, turned to Sarah and went ‘ooh’. LIFE LIST

Edinburgh Festival The Festival season will soon be upon us in the fair city of Edinburgh. Not only can you see a cornucopia of arts events, you can also test the limits of your crowdophobia (yes, I know it’s really called ocholophobia too). And come on, who doesn’t enjoy having mime artists thrust leaflets in your face? However, despite the wisdom of “When in Rome...” there are some things that simply aren’t done when you’re visiting Scotland’s beautiful capital: 1. Calling it Auld Reekie with no idea what you’re actually talking about. 2. Asking for pasties because you think you’re actually in Cornwall. 3. Trying tablet and then declaring, in a pompous voice: “Well, it’s just like an overcooked fudge, really.” 4. Wearing a tartan hat and not expecting to be chinned. 5. Asking a piper to do a request of God Save the Queen. 6. Insisting that you’re one quarter Scotch, even if you are a heavy drinker. 7. Stopping a genuine Scot and trying to get directions to the Highland Clearance sale. 8. Asking if they still take English currency. 9. Mentioning how reasonably priced that whole tram thing turned out to be. 10. Contacting the police to tell them there’s a dormant volcano under Edinburgh Castle. Learn from the experience of others - they already know and they’ll not thank you for the call. And to really take the biscuit - a shortbread, naturally: 11. Trying to speak in a faux Scottish accent, bearing an uncanny similarity to Dr Finlay because yer dinnae ken. 38
