GOLDEN YEARS
Memories of 50 Years Ago by Ted Bruning
Exactly 51 weeks after coming to power with a majority of four, Harold Wilson seized a very public opportunity to prove that when he said he was going to reforge Britain in the white heat of the technological revolution, he meant it. For on 8th October 1965 he cut the ribbon on perhaps the most visible manifestation in Britain of the new world of high-tech telecommunications: the Post Office Tower. Not all was as it seemed, of course. First, Harold Wilson had absolutely nothing to do with the tower’s creation: it was first proposed in 1954; construction started in June 1961; and it was topped out in July 1964, three months before the general election. Secondly, the microwave technology it existed to support was not quite whitehot: the purpose of the tower was to replace an array of microwave antennae that had been built on top of a neighbouring telephone exchange in 1947, and which was now in danger of being overshadowed by the many much taller office-blocks that were at the planning stage. But performing the official opening made a great photo-opportunity for such an avowed moderniser as Wilson.
Happy 50th Birthdays to Ardal O’Hanlon (8th), Luke Perry (11th), Steve Coogan (14th), and Steve Lamacq (16th). Cake and botox to you all! 4
At 177 metres tall (191 if you include the antennae), and on foundations rammed 53m deep into the clay beneath Maple Street, Fitzrovia, it was London’s tallest building until the NatWest Tower was completed 15 years later. The slim, elegant, greenglass shaft with its 29 microwave dishes and 16 storeys packed with mysterious technology was visible from almost everywhere in London, and was utterly unlike anything Londoners had ever seen. Serene and unmoving
it may have appeared but it was actually frenetically busy: TV shows, radio programmes, long-distance telephone calls, air traffic control data and military traffic – all began their silent and invisible journeys round the country from this point. But this was the ‘60s, when the concept of modernity was as much cultural as technological; and culture in the ‘60s was a democratic affair. Not only was the tower entirely designed by the in-house architects at the Ministry of Works, not only was it entirely publicly funded (to the tune of £2.5 million), and not only was it open to the public, but the whole thing was crowned by a restaurant that revolved at a snail’s pace, taking 22 minutes to complete a circuit without causing a ripple on the surface of the diners’ glasses of Blue Nun. To novelty-hungry Londoners it was a sensation: more than a million people visited the Tower in its first year and 100,000 dined in the restaurant. Then in October 1971, the IRA set off a bomb in the gents’ loo on an observation deck underneath the restaurant. Noone was hurt and no structural damage was done but security was ever afterwards a concern. In 1980 the tower was closed to the public. Ostensibly this was on security grounds, as the Troubles were intensifying; actually, though, the newlycreated BT (after which the tower was renamed) saw a great deal less trouble and more profit in operating the upper stages as a swish venue for corporate functions than as a downmarket tourist attraction; it’s rather telling and perhaps indicative of the times that even though the Troubles are ancient history now, the tower has never reopened.

Some years ago when spotlights and track lighting were all the rage, I was a bit of a home fashion victim, and installed them in every room I could. On hindsight I overdid it a bit as my husband recently declared in exasperation, “do you know we have 88 bulbs in this house? 88!” . Each year as the nights start drawing in again and so the lights are on for longer, bulbs going “pop” becomes a daily occurrence. With the old fashioned ones as rare as hen’s teeth, I tried those long life ones that come to life after you’ve tripped over the wellies in the unlit garage. OK plan C, I’ve taken advice from my local electrician and switched from 50w spotlights to 5w LED bulbs. This is all in a bid to reduce our embarrassingly large electricity bill. I began with restricted use of the national-grid-draining tumble dryer. I’m now using the oven feature on my microwave rather than using the main oven simply to warm up plates or cooking a meal just for two. Alas, training teenagers to turn off the lights/TV/ computer/hair straighteners before leaving the room is a skill I have yet to master. My husband suggested abandoning the dishwasher but I assured him I’d read somewhere that it is false economy and washing by hand is more wasteful (and if I didn’t read it, I’ll write it myself). There are many ways to keep the bills in control from having a programmable central heating controller to changing light bulbs, and your local plumber, electrician or builder can help you. We also have an article on page 16 with a few other ideas. Until next time.

BEAUTY
Tresses That Impress By Kate Duggan Whether long, short or inbetween, afro, curly, wavy or straight, our hair is one of the first things people notice about us. The right style can detract from imperfections, and tells the world a little something about our personality. It can make us more self-assured; more confident in the workplace and social situations. And, of course, it’s not just about the cut; having the right tools in your arsenal at home can make all the difference.

Aveda Be Curly Co-Wash
I have a confession – until recently I didn’t own a hairbrush. I just used my daughter’s, which is shaped like Hello Kitty, but does the job. Thankfully, now I am the proud owner of a Wet Brush, the US’s bestselling hairbrush, which detangles wet or dry hair like a dream. My daughter is also a fan, as it doesn’t pull as much, which is making mornings rather more pleasant. The Wet Brush costs £11.99 from www.cultbeauty.co.uk. If you only make one change to your haircare regime, swap to a gentler, more natural shampoo. Most high street shampoos contain Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, which can strip your hair of essential oils, leaving it limp and lifeless. A gentler alternative is Green People Quinoa & Artichoke Shampoo and Conditioner (£9.95 each), which are designed to nourish and protect damaged
hair. The quinoa and artichoke leaf work together to condition, minimise frizz, strengthen and protect from UV radiation. Curly and coily haired women have cause to celebrate, with the release of Aveda Be Curly Co-Wash, £17.50, which cleanses hair, while preserving moisture and minimising frizz. The key ingredients are organic babassu oil and baobab oil. Subrina Kidd, Aveda UK’s Textured Hair Specialist, explains, “Regular cleansing shampoos can often leave hair looking and feeling dry and brittle – this low-lather, sulfatefree formula will refresh and revive the hair texture or curl pattern without removing necessary
moisture. To avoid tangling, sub-divide the hair into four sections, massage the Co-Wash into each section, comb through and then rinse thoroughly.” Looking for a salonstyle deep conditioning treatment? Try Philip Kingsley Geranium & Neroli Elasticizer, £31.50, a pre-shampoo conditioning treatment that contains neroli, geranium, lavender, rose and orange oils. The Elasticizer has been around for a few years now, and has won numerous awards and accolades. This new version looks set to be just as successful, as it leaves hair soft, bouncy and easier to style. While you can just apply it a few minutes before showering, for best results lather it on before bed. It may seem pricey, but a little goes a long way, so you’ll get a fair few weekly treatments from each jar.

LOCAL NEW AND EVENTS
Langley Equinox This summer has seen volunteers doing work on fences and gateways. Hefty new gateposts, shaped from fallen oaks, have been dug in with a lot of sweat and cement and the metal gates rehung on these strong supports. The old wooden wicket gates beside them have been replaced, and nearby fencing repaired. Rhododendron is being cut systematically, and all the Himalayan Balsam along the section of the Blackwater that flows through the wood was pulled up before it could set seed. Late autumn brings in winter birds such as Fieldfare and Redwing and these tend to be seen around the wood’s edges. Tawny Owl activity, and especially their calling, increases significantly in autumn as young birds move around seeking new territories. Many butterflies and moths will over-winter as adults (Brimstone, Small Tortoiseshell, Peacock, Comma) and during September they need nectar so that they can be in good condition to sit out the winter. They’ll also be looking for good places to hibernate: log piles, hollow trees, sheds, anywhere sheltered, hidden, dry and cold. As for the younger generation, many butterfly and moth caterpillars will now be in a race against time to feed before their food plants die. Some stay as caterpillars for the winter, others turn into chrysalis and pupa. It’s important not to clear up too thoroughly in the autumn, whether in the wood or your garden; it’s vital to leave logpiles, leaf and bracken litter, tussocks of dead grass and such, otherwise there’ll be nowhere for these and other insects to overwinter. Leave the rake in the shed! 8

Downton Horticultural Society The Downton Horticultural Society was officially founded in 1905, although there is some evidence that the Society, in some form, existed before that date. It is a small, friendly Society with our membership ranging from novices and armchair gardeners to experts who exhibit at both regional and national events. Each year we hold three shows, Spring, Summer and Autumn. During the year we also arrange a series of garden workshops where members get together to discuss gardening matters and possibly get advice from an expert on some aspect of gardening. During the summer we normally organise a coach trip on a Sunday and a mid-week evening visit to a local garden.

Spend Now, Save Later By Alison Runham, ww.alison.runham.co.uk
These days, we’re all being urged to return to ‘make do and mend’; to reduce, reuse and recycle because it’s economical and ‘green’. But sometimes this can be false economy – and false ecology, too. Some things may be worth replacing or investing in.
Cars Ever hung on too long to a car that’s eventually cost more in total repairs than it did to buy? Buying a new (or even relatively new!) car is expensive, but in the long run it may save you money – depending on what car you buy. ECONOMY: A new car should be more fuel efficient, saving you money on petrol or diesel costs. Treat it well and it shouldn’t need major maintenance for years, plus a brand new car won’t need an MOT until it’s three years old. ECOLOGY: Greater fuel efficiency and lower emissions mean newer cars tend to be greener.
Boilers Once again, we can hang on to boilers too long and they can be expensive to repair, particularly if you need to call someone out overnight or during a holiday. 16
Maintenance contracts aren’t always cheap either. ECONOMY: Boilers account for around 55% of your energy costs; replacing your old one with an A-rated condensing boiler and modern heating controls will ensure your home and water are warm when needed but aren’t wasting energy when not, and could save you up to £305 a year on energy bills. ECOLOGY: A new boiler will reduce your energy use and carbon dioxide emissions.
Water softeners About 60% of UK households have hard water that can damage and lessen the efficiency of appliances and heating systems; just 1.6mm of scale build-up can cause a 12% loss in heating efficiency. Shower heads, toilets, taps, pipes, radiators, boilers, kettles, dishwashers and washing machines will all need more frequent repair and replacement, not to ...Continued on page 18

mention the cost of limescale removers for appliances, sinks and toilets, and the greater quantities of detergent, shampoo, shower gel, washingup liquid and toilet cleaner required. ECONOMY: British Water estimates that a water softener could save the average 4-person household around £200 a year. ECOLOGY: Softened water can remove existing scale deposits over time in heating systems. Fewer chemicals and less energy are used, and appliances will need less frequent repair or replacement.
Solar Panels The government’s FIT (feedin-tariff) scheme offers 20 years of guaranteed, tax-free, index-linked payments to households that produce their own electricity from renewable technologies. To make the biggest saving, use as many appliances as possible in the daytime when generating your own power. ECONOMY: You’re paid for every kilowatt of energy you create, and every kilowatt you don’t use, which feeds back into the National Grid; and of course the bills from your supplier will drop dramatically too (solar

panels create about two thirds of the energy necessary for a family of four). On average, installation costs around £7000 and you may need to replace the inverter, which links the panels to your domestic supply, once every 20 years. It takes around 10-12 years to get back the cost of installation. Bear in mind that the FIT has dropped dramatically over the past few years, but then installation costs are dropping too. ECOLOGY: Your household will be producing renewable energy and none will be wasted, as it’s fed back into the Grid when unused. Always research any major purchase to ensure you get the best deal for you.

And Another Thing... by Tom Hughes I have a blended family. I don’t mean one night I went mad, chopped them all to bits with an axe then heaved their dismembered corpses into a giant Moulinex. What I actually mean is Sarah and I have four kids between us. And no, it’s not Piccadilly Circus in our house, it’s Grand Central Station. “Dad, I’m just going out.” “But Rob, you’ve just come in.” “Yes I know, I’ve come in to say I’m going out. Bye.” (slam). “Dad, will you take me to the cinema?” “Emma, what are we going to see?” “I’m going to watch Minions..” “Will it make me want to eat mini onions?” “What? Dad you’re not coming, you’re just giving us a lift.” I get ready to take Emma to the cinema in my trusty Mondeo Ghia (half leather trim, heated seats). Now, do I have everything? Keys, coat, shoes, glasses….ready. 22
Beep! Beep! Hang on, who is that outside sounding their horn?
“Glasgow.”
“It’s OK, Rebecca’s Mum’s here, she’s taking us now, mix up, bye!” (slam).
“I’ve got tickets to see The Sausage Knotters.”
I sit back down in my coat. Ollie (the dog) sees that I am now wearing my anorak and trots off to retrieve his lead. He drops it at my feet and gives me his, “Well, come on!” look. We make it to the front porch just as the heavens open. “I’m taking Ollie out, bye!” (slam).
“Glasgow?”
“Glasgow?” Eyebrows up, chin down, “So… that’s a no?” “I’m not entirely sure the Mondeo is up to it.” “Fine!” Sarah delayed her countdown just a touch too long - “Three…..two (slam), oh damn!”
Don’t think door banging is confined to the entrance to our castle; all the internal doors take a hammering. I am an expert in counting down the slams.
Amateur. And so another week begins - football, gymnastics, swimming, cinema, proms, cheerleading, sleepovers, horseriding.
“Dad! That’s so unfair! Right! Fine.”
Have you ever tried to organise a parent’s lift rota on Facebook? It’d be easier to start a protest flash mob outside a G8 summit.
“Three, two, one …(slam!) Ooh, right on the money.” Sarah was impressed. “You’ve got that down to a tee.” “Here, do you want a go?” “OK” Right on cue, Evan popped his head round. “Dad, can I have a lift on Friday?” “No problem, where to, your girlfriend’s? The cinema?”
No one tells me who is picking up who. Emma was in the back seat ready to go to Duke of Edinburgh (It was a meeting about his Award, he hadn’t called round to see if she was playing out) and I was just about to set off when a Chelsea tractor with blacked out windows skidded to a halt on the pavement in front of us. A strange creature with Gucci bug eyes and a mouth like
a salmon was at the wheel. I shrugged. The creature shrugged back. Emma looked at me and shrugged. We all shrugged. Then the creature sped off, beeping her horn and pouting rude words at me. “Who was that?” “Rebecca’s Mum, I think she was supposed to take.” “Well nobody told me.” Then, a miracle, a gift from the gods. Rob passed his test. We were so proud, his Mother was overjoyed. A whole new world opened up. Lifts to the pub, lifts to the game, lifts to the pub; my life was coming back to say hello!
“Two hours.”
pounds thirty one pence. With a nine hundred pounds excess.”
“One moment please”. A pause while the computer flicked over into improbability mode.
“But….the car is only worth eight hundred quid. So, what am I actually paying for?”
“That will be an additional premium of one hundred and thirty pounds.”
“…Peace of mind?”
“How long licence held?”
“Really? That’s very reasonable.” Long summer nights at our local watching other couples throw car keys at each other filtered into my mind. “Yes, that additional premium takes you to your renewal date which is next Saturday.”
It was my birthday last week. I came home and everyone was in the front room grinning. I sat down, Rob pushed Olly off my lap and handed me my present. A pair of driver’s gloves and some furry dice. Everyone fell about. A car horn blared outside. “That’s not that Rebecca’s scary Mum again is it?”
“Ok, and how much is it for the year?
“No. Come on Dad, we’re taking you to dinner.”
“Good morning, I’d like to add an additional driver to my policy.”
“One moment please…five thousand eight hundred and fifty nine pounds, and thirty one pence.”
Outside, a minibus. We all piled in. What’s this - free food and a lift home? Priceless. You see, it doesn’t take much….
“Additional driver’s age?”
“You what?! Five thousand – “
“Seventeen.”
“..Eight hundred and fifty nine

NATIONAL TRUST
Autumn Colours At Stourhead Alan Power, the head gardener at Stourhead said they have over 600 species of tree and shrub in the landscape gardens, planted 250 years ago to create a changing view as the seasons progress.
‘We expect a few early hints of autumn, it is the Maples, both the Norway and Japanese Maples, are always the first to turn with the rest of the garden will follow along at a nice steady pace,’ said Alan.
The huge number of tree types at Stourhead mean the fiery colours of Autumn start early and have a long season, being expected to develop over September and October.
‘We are fortunate to have a garden with such variety which means that Autumn is never a single day event here - there is no best time to visit – it is a six to eight week period when people love to come again and again and watch the changes as the colours wash across the different trees in the garden. Every autumn at Stourhead is different as the trees respond to weather throughout the summer and subsequently during September. Depending on the amount of moisture in the ground and the stresses the trees have suffered from weather over the summer months, autumn can start very suddenly or can develop gently across the gardens. Alan added: “Autumn is perhaps my favourite season in the gardens at Stourhead. The plant collection itself is
24
worth coming to see but added to it the architectural features within the landscape, the way the trees reflect in the lake on the calm days – especially when the tulip trees on the islands turn yellow – makes it a very special time of year.” The vision of the garden was laid down in the 18th century by Henry Hoare II who placed Stourhead at the forefront of the 18th-century English landscape movement. Inspired by the views of Italy captured by artists in paint, he decided to create a landscape garden at Stourhead that would bring art to life. His work was carried on by his grandson Richard Colt Hoare who added to the garden and developed the current paths also adding many of the broadleaved trees, especially beech, acers, chestnuts, planes and the tulip trees. RECIPE
Chinese Roast Pork with Vegetable Fried Rice Serves 4
Lean and tender pork fillet (also called tenderloin) is a great cut of meat for family suppers as it cooks fairly quickly and slices beautifully. Ingredients: • 500g pork fillet (also called pork tenderloin) • 3 tbsp hoi sin sauce • 3 tbsp soy sauce • 225g easy cook long grain rice • 2 tsp vegetable oil • 2 carrots, peeled and diced • red pepper, deseeded and diced • 6 spring onions, trimmed and chopped • 4 tbsp tinned sweetcorn kernels, drained • 50g frozen peas, thawed • 1 large egg, beaten
Ready in 1 hour 30 minutes, plus marinating
TIP
You can add a bit of extra heat to the marinade with a finely chopped red chilli pepper or a few crushed dried chilli flakes, if liked. 26
1. Place the pork fillet in a shallow dish. Mix together the hoi sin sauce and 1 tbsp of the soy sauce and spread over the pork fillet. Cover and leave to marinate in the fridge for 1-2 hours. Remove from the fridge and stand at room temperature for 20 minutes. Preheat the oven to 200°C / Fan 180°C / Gas Mark 6.
2. Place the pork fillet on a rack set over a roasting tin. Pour 600ml water into the base of the tin (this helps to keep the pork moist during cooking). Roast in the oven for 35-40 minutes until just cooked through. Cover with foil and leave to rest in a warm place for 15 minutes.
3. Meanwhile, cook the rice in a large pan of boiling, salted water for 8-10 minutes until just tender. Drain well. Heat the oil in a large frying pan or wok and fry the carrots for 5 minutes. Add the pepper, spring onions, peas and sweetcorn and cook for a further 2-3 minutes.
4. Stir in the cooked rice and beaten egg and cook over a high heat, stirring all the time, for 1-2 minutes, or until the rice is piping hot and the egg has just set. Stir in the remaining soy sauce and season with freshly ground black pepper. Use a sharp knife to slice the pork fillet and serve on a bed of the hot vegetable rice.

GARDENING
Lovely Lawns by Pippa Greenwood www.pippagreenwood.com
Almost every garden has a lawn, and even if you have no aspirations to turn yours into a smart bowling green style creation of smooth perfection, there is a lot you can do to keep the typical UK back garden lawn in good condition.
30
With a bit of work, it will be looking healthy and green over the next year too so, rather than waiting until the spring, you should get to work now with some autumn lawn care. If there are any large weeds present in small lawns, you are probably best off just removing them by hand, perhaps using a sturdy old kitchen knife – perfect for removing dandelions, small clumps of daisies and other weeds which are so easily missed by the mower. You should also take a look at the level of moss in the lawn. When it is green and luxuriant, I have to confess to rather liking moss – it can look quite attractive and certainly feels pleasant underfoot, but once it dies out the lawn will look really awful, as it will be gappy and bare. On the whole, moss in lawns is encouraged by compaction, poor drainage of the soil and lawn surface and by excessive shading, perhaps by nearby trees or herbaceous plants in adjacent borders which have been allowed to get too big or flop over. It is certainly worth doing anything you can to alleviate these problems, and for shading
you should consider pruning back shrubs which overhang the lawn or having nearby trees professionally crown thinned or lifted, so that more light gets through to the lawn. Herbaceous plants are often easily dealt with using a few bamboo canes and some string to create a barrier and ease them up and away from the grass. Compaction is a relatively easy problem to deal with, and in small areas where the problem is not too bad, you can use a normal garden fork. Drive this into the lawn every 10 – 15 cm (4 – 6 in) and ease it back and forth slightly, so that the holes created by the tines of the fork are enlarged slightly. By spiking the area in this way you will have created some drainage channels, which will also improve aeration. On very heavy sites or if compaction is bad, you are much better off using a special hollow tine aerator. These are available to buy as attachments for some lawnmowers, or you can buy or hire a dedicated machine or piece of equipment. Each time it is driven into the ground, a hollow tine aerator will remove cylinders of turf and the soil
beneath, thus producing a better effect than the simple method of using a garden fork. Once you have created these longer-term drainage channels, you should then brush a sandy top dressing mixture into all the holes. Use a mixture of sieved garden soil and horticultural sand, perhaps mixed with a small quantity of sieved leaf mould. Once in the holes, the top dressing ensures that they are kept open to allow better drainage and aeration over a much longer period of time. It may also be necessary to kill off the moss if it is really out of control, and for this you can use a proprietary moss killer. This must be applied exactly according to the manufacturer’s instructions and you should make sure that the moss is killed off completely before you attempt
to rake it out. Raking out can be combined with what is known as scarifying, which means that you use a spring tined rake and very aggressively rake the surface of the lawn, so that dead moss, thatch (the accumulated bits of dead grass and other lawn debris) and any other surface debris are removed. Once done, you will find that the lawn looks a lot worse than it did when you started (it can be almost scary!), as it will look thinner and more moth-eaten. However, scarifying helps to ensure that the grasses receive plenty of air and allows for better re-growth; have faith, the situation will improve.
you can re-seed or over-seed the area using a suitable grass-seed mixture. To ensure that the seeds germinate and grow relatively quickly, pin a piece of horticultural fleece or Enviromesh over the newly sown area. This will not only help to keep it a bit warmer, but will also prevent birds from stealing the grass seed.
Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood.com for vegetable plants, Nemaslug, mesh and fleece, Speed Hoes, Speed Weeders, SoftTie, popup crop covers, copper tape and lots more besides.
If you have any areas that are completely bare, then once you have improved the texture of the soil and checked that there are no drainage problems,
