If you were born and bred in the UK (or have lived here for a long time) you sort of get used to the weather (although it doesn’t stop us moaning about it). But if you are a visitor it must be quite hard to understand how we tolerate it. We hosted a student from the south of Japan this summer who was doing a short course in English language and culture at the University of Winchester. He was actually quite surprised to hear that this is summer; he thought perhaps it was another time of year! But when the sun does come out – as it did on a day trip – it’s simply glorious. Not so hot you have to find shade or keep retreating to air conditioned buildings, and everywhere so picturesque and green. So I’d say our good days are some of the best in the world, we just don’t have quite enough of them. Our student had fun practising his pronunciation particularly with some of our town names. Bournemouth took many attempts to get right and his first attempt at Beaulieu had us in stitches (he guessed it would be something like Bowleeoo). On the subject of studying, in October Barton Peveril are holding their open evening for future students (p39). My son went to Barton and loved his time there. The environment and education was very supportive of him as an individual – you don’t have to be one of the ‘cool kids’ or to fit into a clique to be happy and to excel in your exams. If you have teenagers I’d really recommend considering Barton Peveril for their future education.

Car Traffic Control Iain Betson thinks if airports were like our car parks, we’d never get on a plane. On my return flight from holiday I spent time, prior to boarding, watching the preceding flights being prepared for take-off. I was struck by the care the ground and air crew took when moving the aircraft from the jet bridge to the taxiway. Each person knew their job and checks were made prior to each manoeuvre. I particularly noted that an aircraft, ready to push back from the gate, was not allowed to start its engines as a second aircraft was taxiing immediately behind it. When it was clear, the tractor carefully pushed the jet backwards onto the taxiway. Only then did the dispatcher give the signal for the pilot to start up. I contrast this with the actions of drivers in multi-
storey car parks. Most have speed limit signs and bumps, and give way markings on the road. Yet the driving attitude of more than a few motorists is just breathtaking: speeding around corners, narrowly missing pedestrians or not checking properly when reversing out of spaces. If a pilot acted in a similar fashion, throwing the jet out of the gate and speeding along the taxiway, we would surely shout about airline safety. Contrasting this with the free-for-all car parks and the same high potential for an accident, there really is no difference. We rightfully expect the airlines to look after us but, when it comes to driving, it’s our responsibility to look after the safety of ourselves and other road users. After all, we’ve parked our cars, the reckless drivers become the at-risk pedestrians.

GARDENING
Leaf Litter By Pippa Greenwood
Are you surrounded, engulfed and swamped with huge quantities of fallen leaves? Whether they come from trees in your own garden or from a neighbour, the deluge of leaves that falls in autumn is often enough to get level headed, treeloving gardeners eyeing up chainsaws!
At this time of year most of us are feeling as if we are being buried alive by falling leaves. Yes, the vast majority of leaves that are dropping from our own and our neighbours’ trees are pretty enough, and for a while their bright reds, yellows and oranges look stunning both on and off the tree. The problem is that it seems as if there is a virtually endless supply of them and after that initial flurry of pretty colour, the positive feeling soon starts to diminish. Leaves that are allowed to build up in your garden can cause problems - on the lawn they smother the turf grasses, often causing patches of die back, largely due to lack of light and oxygen. If the crowns of the less tough herbaceous perennials or alpines are covered in a soggy blanket of leaves, they too start to deteriorate. So, like it or not, you need to do something - and the sooner you get started the better! A spring-tined rake is perfect for raking leaves off the lawn, and can even work quite well on a gravel drive (provided you don’t rake too deeply and end up ploughing up the stones too!). If you have a lot of lawn or a lot of leaves (or worse still, a big lawn and lots of leaves too) then the
easiest way to deal with them is to mow the lawn. Provided you keep the hopper or grasscollector on the mower, when you empty it out you’ll have a fantastic mix of grass clippings and chopped leaves. On beds and borders you’ll usually end up hand picking, or if time and energy is in short supply you could invest in a leaf vacuum or a leaf blower (and this can, of course, be used on most drives and paths, and lawns too). Great, so you spend a lot of time and effort collecting up all these leaves. Then what? Don’t take them to the tip or make a bonfire: make leaf mould. It is as easy as anything and makes a fantastic soil mulch or conditioner…for free! Leaves are best rotted down on their own (they take longer to decompose than the rest of the stuff in your compost heap and need less air and warmth), so make yourself a simple and inexpensive leaf mould bin. Just drive four stakes into the ground to make the corners of a square, and then attach chicken mesh around the outside to make a cage. Stack the leaves in, tread or firm them, add some water if they are dry, then more water if the weather remains dry… ...Continued on page 14

and then leave them be. If you can chop larger or tougher leaves (like horse chestnut) up first, they’ll rot down much faster - either mow them with the lawnmower or ‘chop’ them with a sharp spade. It is worth avoiding very spiky leaves (the spines seem to withstand rotting and get you later!), and any that are very leathery and tough - mainly evergreens such as holly, laurel and camellia, or those from sycamore and plane. If you want to speed the process up you can add a leaf mould
activator, which is available from garden centres. If space, time or money is short then you can also make leaf mould in a bin liner or other bag. Choose a good quality bin liner - not a really thin one - and cram it full of leaves, again adding water and/or activator if you wish. Then stab a few holes in the bag with a garden fork, loosely fold over the top and weigh it down with a brick. Bin liners full of leaves can be hidden anywhere that you have the space - perhaps behind the

shed, garage or greenhouse. If you don’t like the idea of black plastic, then there are now some lovely jute mesh bags which can be crammed full of leaves and act as a perfect container whilst the leaf mould is forming, but will eventually rot down and add to the useful material you produce. You can see these on my website www.pippagreenwood.com/products. Whichever method you use you should have a useable product in 12-18 months, but leave it a bit longer and it will be even better!

Royal Pier Waterfront Proposal by Lucent Group Developers Lucent Group are planning to link Southampton’s Old Town with a vibrant and attractive new waterfront quarter created as a prime destination for residents and visitors alike. The vision for the new Royal Pier Waterfront promises to deliver the most atmospheric urban waterfront experience on the South Coast, giving unprecedented access to the city’s water-side and celebrating Southampton’s unique heritage links with land, sea and sky. Royal Pier Waterfront will include around 730 contemporary apartments; a major new 47,000 sq m (about 500,000 sq ft) high quality office development; 40-50 new shops, waterside restaurants, cafes and bars plus a gourmet Epicurean Market; a 250-bed, 4-5-star signature hotel and spa; a large casino with leisure and entertainment facilities (subject to licencing decisions); a civic,
cultural / arts and technology hub; and car parking with 2,000 spaces. It will also enable the improvement of Mayflower Park, site of the world-renowned PSP Southampton Boat Show,
and the creation of a soaring monument to Southampton’s famous Spitfire aeroplane. The ambitious development will include a network of attractive routes for pedestrians and cyclists to connect the city with the waterfront, and a range of high quality public spaces and squares where people can enjoy time next to the waterfront overlooking new boat moorings, marine activities and views across the Solent. At the heart of the plan is an enhanced Mayflower Park to provide a landmark recreational asset for the city throughout the year. The regeneration plan will also provide new first class facilities for the Isle of Wight ferry operator Red Funnel which will be relocated to Trafalgar Dock.

RECIPE
Halloween Macaroons
For the ultimate Halloween sweet treat why not have a go at making a batch of French Macaroons? Makes 16 Ready in 1 hour, plus cooling 230g icing sugar, sifted 75g ground almonds 2 large egg whites 50g caster sugar Orange and black food colouring gel 55g unsalted butter, softened ½ tsp vanilla extract TIP The filled macaroons will keep in an airtight box in the fridge for 2-3 days. Stand at room temperature for 30 minutes before serving.
1. Place half the icing sugar and all the ground almonds in a food processor and process for 30 seconds, or until fine and powdery. Sift the mixture into a mixing bowl, discarding any tiny pieces of almonds left in the sieve. Set aside. 2. Whisk the egg whites in a large bowl until softly peaking. Gradually whisk in the caster sugar, to make a firm and glossy meringue. Whisk in enough of the orange food colouring gel to colour the meringue deep orange. 3. Fold one third of the icing sugar mixture into the meringue using a spatula. Repeat with another third of the mixture. Finally add the last third and continue to cut and fold the mixture until it forms a shiny and thick batter that falls in a slow ribbon when the spatula is lifted. 4. Line 2 large baking sheets with baking paper. Spoon the mixture into a large piping bag fitted with a 1cm plain piping nozzle. Pipe 32 discs of the mixture onto the baking sheets, each with a diameter of 3cm. Lift the nozzle at the
24
top of half the piped discs to create a small point. Leave for 30 minutes to allow the macaroons to dry and form a slight crust. Preheat the oven to 160°C / Fan 140°C / Gas Mark 3. 5. Bake, one sheet at a time for 10-15 minutes, or until the macaroons have a crisp shell and the frilly bases don’t stick when gently lifted from the paper. Leave on the baking sheets for 10 minutes, then carefully transfer to a wire cooling rack to cool completely. 6. To decorate, dip the tip of a fine paintbrush into the black food colouring gel and paint pumpkin faces on the 16 pointed macaroons. 7. To make the filling, beat the butter, remaining icing sugar and vanilla extract in a bowl until smooth and creamy. Place all the undecorated macaroon shells flat-side up on a board. Pipe a small mound of the buttercream onto each shell then gently sandwich together with a decorated shell, pressing down gently.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Justin Friel feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving
people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Winchester area and Justin is finding that his approach is
a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done
work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Justin a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

INTERVIEW
Mika After a worldwide hit with ‘Grace Kelly’ back in 2007, Mika is back with a brand new album. Lucy Ambache caught up with him on the Evening Breeze and talked about everything from speed dating to opera.
Great to have you back. You have a voice that you recognise straight away. It’s that high singing thing that you do. How did that come about? Did you study operatics? I did! I studied classical music and I went to music college - I wanted to be an opera singer. So when you sing classically, you aren’t afraid of using all those different parts of your voice. But also I write at the piano but I’m a really simplistic piano player - I kind of use it as a percussion instrument. So to tell a story I had to use my voice - and that’s why I use those different areas. So the new album is called ‘No Place In Heaven’. What’s happening? Are we all going to hell here? No! But you know what they say. Paradise is good for the view. Is there room for you in heaven? The company’s better in hell! But why is it called that!
Mika’s new single is ‘All She Wants’ and is out on the 4th of September. 32
When you’re thirty years old, you have to take hold of your life. But before you’re thirty, things are kind of written for you - you go to school and then you work. But from the age of thirty everyone looks at you and goes “now it’s time for you to completely write it yourself”. Nothing’s decided for you and you need to work out what kind
of adult you hope and wish to become in the future. But the title is just a provocation. If there’s no place in heaven, it forces me to take account for my present life and to live every day as if it’s my last. It’s a coming of age thing, in a way. Tell us about the single ‘Talk About You’ You know when everyone says “oh it’s a really happy love song”. It doesn’t exist. There are no happy love songs. They’re always complicated. Love is complicated. Talk About You is joyful because it’s about a crush! Have you ever done speed dating? No. Well. Unintentionally. Because you think you’re going out on a normal date, but it’s really short - and people just leave! But normal speaking - I think it would be a disaster. Are you single? No I’m not so it’s not really on the cards. I had to go speed dating once with a couple of male friends and they met women they really liked. And the last scene of the night is me sitting between them and they are with their new women. How long did those relationships last? Are we talking months, weeks or hours? Probably the latter!

Work Starts On New Lakeside Centre Mayor of Eastleigh Cllr Jane Welsh visited Lakeside Country Park to see the start of the construction of the new Eastleigh Lakeside community buildings by the Construction Partnership, who are based in Hamble.
Mayor of Eastleigh Cllr Jane Welsh with Cllr Paul Bicknell and Darren Hancock from the Contruction Partnership
The Council’s Eastleigh Local Area Committee approved plans to replace the existing buildings with a new watersports and storage building, which includes new changing facilities, offices and a multi-use room developed on the site - enabling improved use of the lakes by the local community, voluntary groups and the education sector. The multi-use room will also include a kitchen area and serving hatch to provide an opportunity to use the facilities in this great location. Three offices will also be provided that could be used by local organisations or businesses, together with new office facilities for Council staff. The popular Lakeside facility
is currently used by a range of local groups and organisations for canoeing, kayaking, open water swimming and other activities including fishing, model boating and dog training with around 10,000 users and 700 sessions on the water last year. Use of the lakes and the country park will continue throughout the build as temporary showers and other facilities have been provided. Residents are reminded however that this is a construction site and that care and attention must be taken when visiting the park. For more information about the scheme visit www.eastleigh.gov.uk/ lakesideproject

And Another Thing... by Tom Hughes Last Tuesday morning I drew back our bedroom curtains and watched bleary-eyed as the autumn wind sent plastic bottles, newspapers and Dominos pizza cartons swirling into my neighbour’s gardens. Cursing the litter louts who had blighted The Avenue, I turned to my slumbering beloved and said, “Sarah, what’s with all the rubbish outside? Should I ring the council?” From under the duvet came the muffled reply, “What day is it?” “Tuesday. Why?” My Dearly Beloved suddenly sprang from the matrimonial divan and stood frozen on our 80% wool twist, deep in thought. “Yesterday was a bank holiday... Tom, is Mrs Murphy out the front?” “Yes, why?” The look of horror on Sarah’s face said it all. Clasping our hands to our faces, we both screamed together: “The bins!” Time was of the absolute essence. “Tom, what are you doing?” “I’m er, looking for my other sock.” “Never mind socks, just go down as you are! There isn’t time!” “In my jimjams? Why can’t I get 36
dressed?” “Because... you are a man, you don’t care what people think. Now go! And don’t wake your little nephew.” Heartened that my sartorial insouciance gave me licence to roam the streets half naked, I leapt quietly down the stairs, through the kitchen and out onto the patio where lay the dreaded recycling receptacles. Dropping the waste food bin (eugh) onto the cardboard bin, I stuck the one for plastic bottles under my arm and ran towards the front door. I made it just in time to see the pink recycling lorry meandering away down The Avenue. Oh well, maybe we could just wait until next week? The bang from the window above told me that wasn’t an option.
and out of the open-sided van. Eventually, I caught up with the happy band of council employees at the end of The Avenue. Triumphantly, I dropped my containers at one of the Recycle Operative’s feet. Ignoring me completely, he joined up with his pals as the lorry trundled out of my road. And there I remained, standing in my pyjamas on the corner of The Avenue and Harrington Drive, smelling of stale milk. Undeterred I pressed on, managing to barge my way past the lorry to dump my bins at the feet of a tattooed Hell’s Angel in a hi-viz vest. “Can you empty my bins, please?”
Along the road I limped, hitching the boxes up onto my shoulders as bottles and tins clattered down around me.
Giant Haystack’s surly half-brother gave me a stare and then with his massive paw began lifting up my receptacles. Thank goodness for that, now I could end this nightmare, go home and tweezer the gravel out of my feet. Wrong!
“Mr Hughes? You’ve dropped something!”
The black bin crashed an inch away from my foot, un-emptied.
Mrs Murphy, aggressively sweeping her designated part of the pavement, shook her head as I staggered on, cursing my burden of domestic detritus.
“What’s the matter?”
Up ahead, a swarm of tattooed bin men swung plastic boxes in
“There’s a tin can in your cardboard box bin.” “Did you know that in China, a new coal-fired power station comes online every six months, so I don’t think one tin…”
“Sorry sir, I can’t take your bin now, I’ve put a sticker on it.”
First Choice
I looked down. On the side of the container was now stuck a bright yellow note – “Incorrectly Packed Bin”. Giant Haystacks shrugged his shoulders as he and his lorry rolled down Harrington Drive.
Rubbish Clearance Specialists
The sky darkened, commuters stared. There was nothing left for it. The walk of shame awaited. I carried my still-full bins back home. Mrs Murphy shook her head as Sarah opened the door, took one look at my burden, then turned on her heel and went back inside. We didn’t speak until lunch. Billy, my little nephew, was sat at the kitchen table mashing his eggy soldiers as I shuffled mournfully towards the patio. “Uncle Tom, when I grow up I want to be a bin man.” “Why on earth would you want to be a bin man?”
“Well, you get to wear a cool hi-viz jacket, you get a good pension, and you only have to work one day a week....”

Centenary Celebrations The WI Turns 100
1915 First WI meeting venue
A Slow Start
This month marks one hundred years since the first UK Women’s Institute (WI) meeting. As the WI celebrates its centenary, we look at its history and its role today.
1940 Wartime fruit preservation centre
As the twentieth century began, few branches of the new AOS (Agricultural Organisation Society) welcomed women, and female attendees were often too afraid of ridicule to speak. Yet in Canada, the Farmer’s Institutes had inspired women to found WIs to share knowledge on farming and raising a family. The movement spread throughout Canada and to the USA, Poland and Belgium. However, in the UK, WIs weren’t established until the arrival of Madge Watt, a founder member of British Columbia’s first WI. Her speech about the vital contribution women could make to the war effort through working the land to grow food helped persuade the AOS to appoint her as founder of WIs in the UK. WIs would provide a hub for sharing knowledge about agriculture and home industries, and for social activities, but would initially focus on increasing food production to counter WW1 shortages. The first UK WI meeting was held on 16th September 1915 in Llanfair PG, and by 1918 there were 99 WIs. Soon the WI became independent from
the Board of Agriculture; the National Federation of Women’s Institutes (NFWI) was formed in October 1917 and began publishing its Home and Country magazine in 1919. With WW1 over, the WI urged members to become active citizens and stand for election at local and parliamentary level. In 1921 WI member Mrs Margaret Winteringham became the first English born female MP and the second woman in Parliament. By 1924, when Jerusalem was adopted as the WI song, there were 3,223 WIs.
World War Two to Diamond Jubilee The WI had continued to support the League of Nations, and was preparing for war once again. Lady Denman, the WI chair, became Director of the Women’s Land Army in 1938 and WI Preservation Centres played a vital role, canning produce and making jam to turn over 5,300 tons of potential waste into food for the nation. Meanwhile, the NWFI’s 1941 report on evacuees, Town Children through Country Eyes, stimulated debate about families that ultimately resulted in the family allowances after the war. ...Continued on page 46

1941 ambulance presented to the army Aby NFWI Queen Mary had become President of the Sandringham WI in 1919, and in 1943 her daughter Elizabeth joined the WI too. In 1945, the WI founded Denman College.
1975. At the AGM that year, the NFWI confirmed its belief in ‘the principle of equality of opportunity and of legal status for men and women’ and pledged it would continue to work towards it.
With the war over, the WI spread its wings, beginning the fifties with a national music festival. Members also designed a house ideal for a working family for the Ideal home Exhibition (including a porch for muddy boots).
A Thoroughly Modern Institution
1965 was a significant year. The rule prohibiting the founding of WIs in places with populations over 4,000 was abolished, and representatives from 8,700 WIs celebrated the WI’s Golden Jubilee at a special garden party at Buckingham Palace. WIs also compiled Scrapbooks of the Countryside, now held in Local Record Office archives. The sixties ended with performances of The Brilliant and the Dark, an NFWIcommissioned musical following women’s lives throughout the centuries. In 1974 the number of WIs reached an all-time high of 9,309, just in time to celebrate the institution’s Diamond Jubilee in 46
In the 1980s, the WI made its first appearance at the Chelsea Flower Show and launched a three year campaign to raise the profile of the WI, culminating in the WI Life and Leisure Exhibition at Olympia in 1984, opened by the Queen.
in 1999 the WI joined with the National Farmers’ Union to hold A Women in Farming conference, with an address given by The Princess Royal, but perhaps what most overthrew its ‘jam and Jerusalem image’ was the widely reported response of many members to the Prime Minister’s address at their Triennial General Meeting in 2000. Feeling his speech was becoming a party political broadcast, they rewarded him with a slow handclap. However, the WI is still just as committed to preserving traditional skills as it is to addressing the issues of the day, as demonstrated by their Craft Spectacular exhibition in 2000. Today, the WI is the largest voluntary women’s organisation in the UK, with 212,000 members and 6,600 WIs. It still strives to provide women with educational opportunities and campaigns on issues that affect all women and their communities, from equal pay and better midwifery to climate change and the plight of the honey bee, and over the last 100 years it has effected genuine change. So happy birthday, WI; thank you for all you have done, and long may you continue.
There was a growing awareness of By Alison Runham modern technology and current concerns as 1952- The Royal Show at Newton Abbot the WI moved into the 1990s and it campaigned with partners on several issues, including a project to promote sport as part of a healthy lifestyle. Significantly,
