We run a total of ten magazines in Hampshire Melanie Tinson & Tania Houston and until this month, only Discover Winchester didn’t have a local groups and clubs page. As great as the internet is, it’s quite hard work to find the relevant detail and contacts, but we’ve done our best and there’s a now a listing on page 36 (we’d welcome more though).

ADVERTISING SALES ENQUIRIES Tel: Melanie Tinson 023 8027 6396 Email: melanie@discovermagazines.co.uk Web: www.discoveradvertising.co.uk

As we are coming into the warmer weather (so they say!) we also have a particular feature on cycling opportunities. Possibly kick-started by Sir Bradley Wiggins’ success in the Tour de France and the Olympics, followed by Chris Froome’s win of the 100th Tour de France, the sport and leisure (and even commuting) activity has never been more popular. If you turn to page 38, you’ll find our feature on cycling and also some of the rides available over the next few months, with options for both casual and serious cyclists. If you aren’t cycling at the moment but interested in taking it up, the national cycling charity www.ctc.org.uk is an excellent place to start.

It goes through the doors of households in Winchester including Kings Worthy, Headbourne Worthy, Weeke, Harestock, St Cross, Abbots Barton, Sleepers Hill, Hyde, Teg Down Meads, Sarum, Olivers Battery and Badger Farm. 10 Highlights of a Holiday in Croatia Relax on the beach

View from Rozac

apartment balcon

y

Just a week or two in the unspoilt Dalmatian Coast gives you a taste of what Croatia has to offer; history, sun, sea and lots to do. If you haven’t booked your summer holiday yet here’s ten tempting reasons to choose Croatia this year.

1 Historical town of Trogir;

Wind your way round the narrow, cobbled streets, wine and dine under the palms of the “riva” in view of the super yachts berthed nearby.

2 3

Hire a speedboat for the day.

Swim in the falls of the Krk National Park.

4

Visit Split by boat from Trogir. Walk amongst the Diocletian’s Palace, set within the centre of Split itself

5 Okrug Gornji beach, Ciovo.

Be served drinks while you soak up the sun.

6 From dolphin watching to

spearfishing, bike tours and island hops to Hvar; excursions all start from Trogir so take your pick.

7 Laganini Beach Club... heaven.

8

A day trip to Mostar, Bosnia & Herzegovina.

9

Ride the Cetina River in many ways; by raft, canoe, kayak, abseil or just in a wetsuit and drift downstream.

10 Relax by the pool at

Rozac, a luxury 3 bedroom apartment with two balconies, air conditioning and private pool. Located in the heart of Ciovo island, walking distance to Trogir and five minutes stroll to the beach. When’s the best time to go? Peak season is July and August so it’s bustling and weather is beautifully hot. June and September is quieter and a little cooler.

Some excursions might not operate in May and past 15 September. What’s the currency? Kuna and good value for money at current exchange rates. Do they drive on the left or right? On the right but with the network of water buses and boats you don’t need to hire a car. Rozac apartment is available for rent from May to September. Low cost flights from Gatwick and Heathrow to Split. Call Melanie Tinson on 023 8027 6396 or 07900 307636 for availability and costs. Prices from £450 per week.

“During talks with various military stakeholders during the run up to the WW1 centenary it became clear that we could make more of the fascinating military history of the district. 2014 – 2018 is expected to see an increase in day-trippers attending WW1 commemorative events. The trail is tailored for people who have a particular interest in military stories – and gives a broad context that tells a story that starts in the Iron Age and ends in the Nuclear Age.”

And Another Thing... by Tom Hughes

Where to take my beloved for a much needed break? Tenerife for some early sun? Or how about springtime in Paris? Or maybe somewhere nearer home....? “Southport? In March? But Tom, I thought we were going to Paris?” “Did you know Southport’s Lord Street is the inspiration for the boulevards of most romantic city in the world?” “Oh, for a horrible minute I thought you meant we were going to -” “Southport, that’s right. We can take Olly on the beach. Go for a stroll along Southport Pier?” “You know how to spoil a girl, don’t you?” “Come on, grab your coat, better take an extra layer, best take an umbrella too.” “Anything else?”

“A flask of Bovril? Oh and a woolly hat.”

“Tom, as fascinating as this is, can we just get out of the rain?”

In no time at all the Mondeo Ghia was within striking distance of the classiest seaside town north of Liverpool (and south of Blackpool). I parked up on the coast road and after leaping acrobatically to catch my airborne umbrella, shouted over to Sarah.

“Here let’s go down this side alley and get our fortune told.”

“Have you got any change for the machine?” “What!? The wind, I can’t-” She shook her head, no change. No matter we could pay via mobile phone. Thirty minutes later I was in the newsagents changing a five pound note. “You can pay by mobile mate.” “Unfortunately I failed my computer programming A-level, so can I have five pound coins please?” At last, we were ready to explore. “So you see, the design of this street, with its wide thoroughfare, is just like the boulevards of Paris. It is said that Napoleon III lodged just off Lord Street, in 1834 I believe, and that gave him the idea-”

16

“I’ll tell you what Tom, you go and get your fortune told, I’m going into Russell & Bromleys.” Refusing to be dissuaded, I popped my head through the beads hanging across the door and sat down in Madame Sylvia’s bijou front parlour, with Olly sat quietly on my knee. She took my hand in hers which was of course the signal for me to start giggling. “I would say that you are quite a happy-go-lucky person. Always smiling.” “Well fancy you knowing that?” I beamed. “Now, you haven’t got a younger brother have you?” “No.” “Older sister?” “No. I have a younger sister and an older brother.” “Yes I thought so.” Well done Madame Sylvia, right on the money again! Leaving Madame Sylvia’s armed with the knowledge that my fortune was

on its way, I met Sarah coming out of the shoe shop. Eventually, we battled our way across the coast road and found our way to Southport Pier. “Tom look at it, it’s sheeting down.” “It’s OK darling worry not, we can take the train.” And there, coming into the tiny station on the shortest bit of track known to man, was a real live proper train. “Is this the right train for the end of Southport Pier?” The exhausted driver looked at me like he hadn’t heard that joke for hours.

seedy amusement arcade. We decided to sit out the storm with a restorative cuppa. Unfortunately, a stroppy little man in a hi-viz jacket and moustache barred our way. “Sorry sir, no dogs in the cafe.” We all looked down at Olly, now soaked and shivering with the cold. “It’s OK, he’s a guide dog.” The little Jobsworth’s eyes narrowed. “Well where’s his harness and tunic?” “It’s his day off.”

“Ninety pence please.”

“His day off?”

At the other end of this pile of Victorian Iron we discovered a seedy amusement arcade and tatty cafe which had been refurbished completely and replaced with, er, a tatty cafe and

“Yes. Do you wear that tunic on your day off?” “Er, no.” “Well neither does he, now excuse us.”

HELPING HAMPSHIRE HEAR Leightons are a family run optical and hearing company with over 85 years of professional experience.

After our greasy Eccles cake and stewed tea we decided to head home. I made a dash for the train but it had already gone. “Blast! What time is the next one?” “I’m not sure but I think I can see it now, you know that one there, at other end of this pier?” We returned to our Mondeo Ghia only to find a nice shiny yellow parking ticket stuck onto the windscreen. “I thought you bought one?” “I thought you paid by mobile?” And the moral of this story? When a fortune teller says it’s your lucky day to go and buy a ticket, always follow her advice.

For people with mobility problems, stairs often are the biggest obstacle they’ll face if they want to remain in their own homes. Stair lifts are the answer for many.

New Stannah Stairlift available at Hampshire Mobility Services

With engineering skill and technology advances, stairlifts are becoming more available to suit all if not most styles of staircase. There will still be limitations based on the users dimensions – that’s why it is best to seek advice face-to-face with experienced stairlift companies who can advise on an individual basis.

As with all stairlifts they should comply with the British and European standard (BS EN), this new model 600 does. With its narrower rail profile, the lift’s track is only 6” (150mm) from the wall giving more space for the taller or a less flexible person to travel up and down the stairs. The easy folding seat and arms ensure that the staircase is left fairly unobstructed and with many

Unlike when you talk with family and friends, Marcus isn't trying to say the right things, isn't judging and doesn't want to change the subject. It's a huge relief to be able to speak freely, and I’d strongly recommend his services Mrs A., Chandler’s Ford

TECHNOLOGY

Gadgets for Green Fingers While few of us are likely to spend nearly £900 on Flymo’s latest robot lawnmower, let alone £2,500 for a high-end robot mower, there are lots of garden gadgets that can make life easier and more fun. One of the most useful developments is the arrival of cordless tools ranging from lawnmowers to electric chainsaws. Battery technology has improved dramatically in a very short time, so it’s possible to get tools such as Black & Decker’s 36V cordless strimmer that can cut up to 3,750 metres on a single charge. Just remember to charge them up before you use them, as recharging flat batteries can take a while. If you fancy something a bit less high tech, Japanese hori-hori knives might be right up your street: the name means “digging digging” and a hori-hori knife’s straight sharp blade makes it perfect for everything from planting to cutting roots. They can be a little tricky to find, but eBay is always a good source of such tools. Another great tool is the Woodman’s Pal. It’s a little pricey 22

Edyn Smart Garden Sensor

- expect to pay £50 upwards but it’s really clever and really useful. The Pal was originally designed for the US Army in the early 1940s and it’s a cross between an axe and a machete, with a hooked section on the end. That makes it great for clearing all kinds of vegetation, and it replaces a whole bunch of tools including pruning saws, shears, loppers and in some cases, even chainsaws. This year’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES) featured the usual home entertainment technology, lots of TVs and even more laptops, but it also had an unusually large selection of garden gadgets. One of the cutest was the Green Farm Cube. Another Japanese design, and it’s a hydroponic grow box that enables you to grow plants such as herbs anywhere all year round. At around £120 it’s quite expensive, but it looks great and works well. It’s particularly good for people who want to grow things but don’t have a garden to do it. It seems that smartphones are taking over every aspect of our lives, so it’s not a surprise that they’re starting to look at our gardens too. App-connected gadgets

are everywhere at the moment. Netatmo’s Connected Weather Station (approx £110) tells your phone about indoor and outdoor humidity, temperature and air quality as well as predicting the weather, while Koubachi’s Plant Sensor 2 Outdoor (approx £96) measures soil moisture, sunlight, infra-red light, temperature and more to let you know exactly how well valuable plants are doing. Another CES exhibitor, Edyn, promises to deliver the “connected garden” with sensors that analyse the soil, monitor the temperature and even check the weather forecast to help you decide what to plant and how to look after it. The product range also includes smart water valves that automatically water your plants, and solar power means you don’t need to run any cables. It’s overkill for a couple of blooms from Homebase, but if you’re a serious gardener it’s a seriously clever bit of kit. Edyn is currently available for pre-order, and the sensor and water valve are $99 (£65) and $59 (£39) respectively.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Justin Friel feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving

people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Winchester area and Justin is finding that his approach is

a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done

work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Justin a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

HOBBIES

Get Ready for the Cycling Revolution by Kate McLelland

When Graham Flavell moved to rural Dorset to begin a new job, he decided to take up cycling as a way of exploring the countryside. For many years he continued to enjoy low-key, leisurely bike journeys: discovering more about the local area and enjoying the occasional family holiday on two wheels. In recent months, however, Graham’s commitment to cycling has undergone something of a revolution. He is now one of the many thousands of people in the UK for whom cycling has become a serious hobby, and he currently cycles up to 140 miles each week with a few like-minded friends. Graham says: “We meet twice a week and I enjoy the camaraderie of cycling in a group. It was hard when I started, but I’ve been amazed how my fitness has improved over the last six months.” So where do you start if you have decided to take up cycling for the first time? It really depends on what kind of cycling appeals to you. Will you be using your bike for transport, for leisure or for competition? Budget is another important factor. Not everyone can afford to buy models such as the new, lightweight carbon framed bicycles, which can cost up 38

to £1,000. An old bike can fit the bill (provided you’re not competing in the Tour de France or planning any off-road trekking), but if you’re buying second hand it’s advisable to get your bike serviced to ensure that it is roadworthy. If you’re not sure what type of bicycle you need - and there are a bewildering variety of models out there - a specialist cycling shop should be able to help. Alternatively Guardian journalist Helen Pidd’s book The Complete Guide to Everyday Cycling (published by Penguin) offers a practical, illustrated guide to buying and riding a bike for the first time. Once you have bought your bicycle, you’ll need to acquire some basic skills. How to signal, how to ride in traffic, how to do an emergency stop and even how to change a tyre: these are all essential things to learn before you before you set out on a busy road. The British Cycling website (www.britishcycling.org.uk) allows you to search for a local Bikeability course, designed to teach you the skills you need to ride confidently on today’s roads. Britain’s network of cycle lanes and paths is steadily growing, and cycling is now a much safer activity than it used to

be, although urban cyclists often complain of cycle lanes being too narrow, or the layout stopping abruptly. Rural roads offer their own challenges, but after a lifetime’s cycling along country lanes Graham Flavell says that the drivers he has met are generally respectful. Sport England claims that over 2.1 million people currently cycle on a weekly basis in the UK and in the autumn of last year the government published a draft version of its Cycling Delivery Plan for consultation, giving details of a 10-year strategy that includes the ambition to double the amount of cycling activity on Britain’s roads by the year 2025. The government is keen to promote this plan because cycling not only benefits our mental and physical health, it also protects the environment by cutting down on carbon emissions. Graham Flavell agrees there are really no better reasons to get on your bike!

Winchester Cycle Rides The CTC is the national cycling charity; it inspires and helps people to cycle and keep cycling. It encourages all types of cycling, on the road or off it. It supports you if you already ride, or would like to ride, to work or school, for health, touring, sport and leisure – or just because it's fun. Further details at www.winchesterctc.org.uk.

Spring Motoring Winter driving is well behind us, but spring brings its hazards too. Iain Betson offers these driving tips to get you safely to summer. 1. Run your AC at least once a week, even in winter. Remember, you don’t have to turn it down to a chill level that a penguin would love; just make sure all is working OK. So it will work when you really need it. 2. Check the fluid levels and, perhaps while you’re at it, give the bodywork a good wash too. Get all the salt deposits off from the wheel arches and underneath. 3. In these months the sun is still quite low in the sky but the glare will be getting stronger.

Don’t just rely on the sun-visor; take a pair of sunglasses with you. 4. April showers will lift all the rubber and other muck out of the tarmac, causing the road surface to be slippery for a time – extra care will be needed when cornering or braking. 5. In springtime, we all like to get out pursuing our pastimes after the dark winter months. For many, this will mean using the roads, but not as motorists. Be aware of extra walkers, joggers, cyclists, horses and riders 6. Winter takes its toll on road surfaces and traffic makes a small pothole bigger. It doesn’t just make for a bumpy ride; hitting a pothole can throw the steering out of alignment and, if you have alloy wheels, crack the spokes. Do your best to avoid potholes, but not at the expense of swerving dangerously to avoid them.

GARDENING

Facing North by Pippa Greenwood www.pippagreenwood.com www.pippagreenwood.com

The problem I am asked about most frequently is one that almost all of us have: “What do I do with a north-facing wall?” What everyone wants to know is what you can plant up it but more, what can you do to turn your luck around and increase the chances of your chosen plant not just surviving but also thriving.

Getting the right plant for the spot is essential and I’ve listed some great north-facing wall climbers below. But first consider whether you need year round cover (and so something evergreen) or would accept a deciduous climber that will lose its leaves but keep a framework of stems, or if you could live with an herbaceous climber that will die back each year and return again in the spring. If the wall is very shaded it may be worth reducing the shade somewhat if you can. Nearby wall-shrubs could be pruned back or overhanging trees crown lifted (the lower branches removed) or crown thinned (the crown’s density reduced). Walls may be a dark grey or brick colour but you can make the spot considerably more plant friendly if you change the colour of the wall before planting. Use of a pale-coloured masonry paint on the wall will cause light to be reflected back to the plant and make it more likely to thrive even if conditions are a bit gloomy. Consider growing more than one climber to increase the season of interest and so the amount

42

of time that the wall looks good – perhaps a climber for spring and another for summer. Flowering may be reduced if the site is gloomy and so to maximize your climber’s flower power make sure that you apply sulphate of potash as this will increase flowering potential somewhat. Follow the instructions on the pack, and generally try to apply it to the root area in late summer and then again in spring. Make sure that the climber goes in at a good distance from the wall up which it is to grow. A minimum of about 45cm (18in) should mean that it can develop a good strong root system and this will help to keep it growing well and strongly even in this rather shaded spot. Self-clinging climbers such as the climbing hydrangea or a variegated ivy can look great and help to provide at least part of the interest you’re after for your north-facing wall, but even these often need a bit of a helping hand to get them started – train the stems on to the wall and protect from wind until they get properly attached.

Jim’s Mowing Has your lawn woken up from its Winter sleep? It will start demanding your attention when the soil is reasonably dry and the grass has begun actively to grow. Typically your first cut will be during March or early April. To avoid severe yellowing, ensure that those first few mows are made with a higher blade

setting. This is also a good time to apply moss-killer, and to repair any broken edges. When the grass is growing strongly, lower the mower height and give the first feed to ensure vigorous growth for the rest of the year. Once your lawn is awake, so too will be the weeds. The Grass Is Greener ...Or Is It? You don’t need to be a weatherman (or woman) to know that the UK isn’t blessed with the most desirable of climates. Our weather is unreliable and generally takes the middle ground in terms of heat, cold, sun, cloud, rain and snow. There’s not enough of any one to be worthy of note, except on the odd few days when it veers to an extreme - so unusual it makes headline news. Still, every cloud has a silver lining…literally! This temperate climate means we can have gorgeous gardens during the summer without having the worry of hosepipe bans and scorching heatwaves. And for most of us, the cornerstone of outdoor living is the lawn – the canvas for horticultural artistry. Even if you aren’t green fingered, it is likely that more of your garden will be given over to lawn than any other single feature. Unfortunately, if your grass looks more grazing meadow than bowling green, a beautiful space will elude you until it’s sorted. But where do you start, and what do you need?

Analysis Is your soil chalk, clay or sand? Do you have a problem with any particular types of weeds 46

and pests. Are there any bare patches and what’s causing them (e.g. pets)? Is the lawn type suitable for purpose – the finest blades aren’t going to stand up to footie with the kids.

Equipment If your lawnmower hasn’t had any maintenance in years, the blades are blunt, and the blade height is difficult to adjust, you need to choose between a service or a new model. But lawns also need scarification (removing moss and other debris) and aeration (small holes in the ground to allow air, water and nutrients to circulate) and both of these require specific tools.

Products Plenty of water of course, but no garden reaches its full potential without products to feed the growth and kill the weeds. These are relatively inexpensive and can be purchased at most DIY stores and garden centres. However, if you don’t know what you are doing, you can waste money or worse do damage; many a garden has been scorched by an over enthusiastic application of fertilizer.

Time Oh yes, that elusive element,

lack of which is the enemy of any outdoor plans. If you can’t be consistent with your maintenance, it’s hardly worth starting. It’s all very well being enthusiastic in March and April, but if you’ve lost interest by July, both time and money will be wasted.

The professionals Feeling enthused? Or overwhelmed and resigned to golden yellow thatch instead of a glorious green sward? It is possible with research, time, dedication and money to achieve great results taking the DIY route. But in reality it’s a job many just don’t enjoy doing and consequently the professional lawn treatment market has rocketed over the last few years. Most people do still like to mow their own lawns (although many even outsource that these days), but buying and storing expensive equipment and carrying out lawn work, is a job better left to those that do it all the time . With treatments typically starting at around £14 a visit (4 visits a year), you could spend more on the fuel taking you to and from the garden centre!

Still Longing For Our Own Loving Home Lizzy and Cokie have been in care for a year now since being rescued from cruelty and neglect. They have responded well to love and attention, and their sweet affectionate characters are shining through. Their fosterer is surprised and saddened that they keep being “overlooked” - for they are lovely cats, and would so appreciate a happy future with owners who will give them the love and security they rightly deserve. They need to be the only pets, and considering their traumatic past -- owners will need to have patience with them (possibly more than usual) for them to settle and gain confidence. They are approximately 12 years, and of course would love a garden to explore once happy and settled. Anyone wishing to offer them a loving forever home should please contact 02380 435855 49
