We’re into our food, my family. Of course everyone is ‘into’ food to survive, but some people do just eat to live. Not us though Melanie Tinson & Tania Houston – we finish each meal dreaming of what we are going to be having at the next. My husband is the cook and even though our children are 20 and 18 now, he likens us all to chicks in the nest, beaks open wide hungrily calling for the next morsel. Food quality is more important than quantity though. So one of the highlights for us in the calendar is Hampshire Food Festival. From the 1st July to the 2nd August venues across the area hold workshops, demonstrations, tours, tasters and special menus to celebrate the best of Hampshire food and drink. The award-winning Hampshire Food Festival is now in its 15th year and last year attracted over 295,000 visitors. Many events are free or low-cost, and there is plenty for adults, children and families. Mel and I were invited to the press launch day a couple of weeks ago and had the most wonderful few hours sampling some of the producers’ wares (see page 31). Jams, breads, cheeses, meat and fish, wines and beers…mmm, my mouth is watering just writing about it. What was really lovely though was meeting the people who had started their businesses with a passion for food, giving up careers and often taking over the family kitchen in order to develop and produce their unique offerings. The full list of events is on-line at www.hampshirefare. co.uk and watch out for the logo as pictured here at local restaurants and food outlets throughout the year, indicating they are supporting local producers.

Until next time.

And Another Thing... by Tom Hughes My Sunday morning began like any other. Settled into my favourite chair with my brew, a slice of freshly buttered toast and two episodes of Broadchurch on catch-up, I was just about to take my first sip of tea when in walked Sarah, closely followed by Hannah and Emily. Sarah, wearing a benevolent, concerned expression on her face gently relieved me of my steaming mug, sat me down and said, “Tom, What we are about to say is said out of love and concern, nothing else.”

“Sarah, what about these?”

“A what?”

“You haven’t just grabbed the cheapest have you?”

Next to pipe up was Hannah. “Yes Dad, look at that jumper, look at those jeans?” “What’s wrong with them?” “Dad, who wears hiking socks, walking shoes and a snood to the gym?” “Yes Tom, the girls are embarrassed. Their friends are talking about you. You need a new wardrobe, urgently”, said Sarah.

Then I realised what was happening, it was a family intervention! But an intervention about what? Was my customary Friday night pint of mild down the Paraffin Lamp getting out of hand? Was my chocolate habit becoming a cause for concern? What could it be? I decided to confront the issue head on.

“Well ok, I’ll go through my stuff and - “

“Listen, if anyone is wondering why all the cream eggs keep disappearing, I want you all to know that from now on I promise to share the value pack with everyone else.”

“No Tom, this lot is off to the charity shop in the precinct. Now, grab your coat and let’s go shopping! Err, on second thoughts, leave the coat, let’s just go.”

A confused silence descended. The three women in my life all stared at each other. Chocolate Eggs it seemed, were not the issue. Sarah pressed on. “We are gathered here today Tom 10

to tell you that, well, you are a bit of a scruff.”

“Too late, we’ve done it for you.” Then Sarah, much to my dismay, produced a black bin liner full of my precious old clothes. Sweatshirts, jeans and - horror of horrors - my Bruce Springsteen 2005 tour t-shirt. “Not the Boss! Please?”

In the vast outlet clothes store I wandered aimlessly around, fingering the rails without a clue what I was doing. Eventually I held up a pair of jeans with the very pleasing price tag of £24.99.

Sarah examined my choice.

“Not at all.” “Right put them back and go try on these.” I examined the pair picked by Sarah. To my untrained eye, they looked identical to the jeans I’d just chosen. Identical that is, except for the price. Sarah’s were fifty pounds dearer. “Why would I pay seventy-five pounds for something I can get for-twenty five, I just don’t…” Grabbing the seat of the expensive jeans, Sarah pointed to a yellow logo stitched onto the rear pocket. “Look! That’s why. They are designer.” “So, they sew a little squiggle onto the pocket and they charge you treble the price? Are you being serious?” The look from Sarah told me that yes, she was indeed being deadly serious. She picked out another pair from the rack, handed both of them over and pointed in the direction of the changing rooms. I sloped away to the curtained-off area where a glum-faced child handed me an orange circle on which was printed a number two. I battled with the first pair for

what seemed like an age. Eventually I gave up, deciding that in the words of my Auntie Joyce they “Wouldn’t go near me.” The second pair I actually managed to heave myself into. And a more uncomfortable pair of pants I couldn’t imagine. Baggy round the crotch and barely covering the posterior, I assumed that this particular “Designer” - in his hurry to stitch on the magic money squiggle, had stamped them with the wrong size. Outside, I informed Sarah of the manufacturer’s error. Sarah, shaking her head in defeat, flung back at me the cheap pair I had originally chosen. I tried them on right there in the store. Of course, they fitted perfectly. Eye rolls from Sarah, a triumphant beam from her husband. The next day Sarah arrived home from work to find me wearing the new jeans and another, different purchase. “Tom! What are you doing wearing that tatty old Bruce Springsteen T-shirt? I thought I gave that thing away?” “It’s very simple darling, yesterday afternoon, decided to go to the charity shop and do my bit for cancer research...”

Hope and Aid Direct Registered Charity No. 1077146

Spring 2015 Convoy to Konik Refugee Camp, Montenegro. On 27th March this year volunteers from all over the UK including some from Chandlers Ford and Winchester drove trucks for six days, loaded with humanitarian aid, across the continent to Europe’s largest refugee camp in Podgorica, Montenegro. They were part of a team from the charity Hope and Aid Direct going to Konik refugee camp which houses nearly 2000 people who were originally displaced from Kosovo during the war of 1999. The poverty is extreme. We saw two very young boys rummaging through the rubbish skips and a child of 4 or 5 playing in one of the open sewers. The 10 squat style toilets (some without roofs or doors) keep blocking and sewerage runs down the alleys between the containers and shanty huts they live in. Ill fitting or odd footwear was evident, some shoes with heels cut away to make them fit, some with plastic bags inside for waterproofing, some with no shoes at all. The UNHCR and Red Cross do what they can but we were told that no other NGO has been to Konik since we took 60 tons of aid in 2010. This time each family received pasta, biscuits, tinned food, plates, utensils, toiletries, clothing, toys and much more. Our 40 tons of aid was a drop in the ocean but we also gave them hope that others are thinking of them and the smiles on their faces said it all. For more information on the work of Hope and Aid Direct go to www. hopeandaiddirect.org.uk or contact John Desty on 02380 907241 12

INTERVIEW

Leona Lewis X Factor winner, Leona Lewis, is back with a new single, album and tour. The Evening Breeze’s Lucy Ambache caught up with her.

to leave. Although it’s scary, I think it’s a good thing.

So you’ve signed with a new record label. Is that like the first day of school?

Because I still think of you in the ballad niche. Is that annoying?

It’s just a whole new vibe and energy. The team are amazing it’s been really good! And what was it like parting with Simon Cowell. Was it difficult? Yeah it was. Because we’d worked together for years and he’s been amazing to me. Simon’s not there on the ground A & R’ing my records with me. At first he was more but X Factor’s now in a thousand million different countries and he’s all over the place and it’s difficult to pin him down and I just needed to do my own thing, and go my own way. But I still have so much love for him and we’ve got a good relationship still.

14

So let’s talk about ‘Fire Under My Feet’. It’s uplifting, it’s got a bit of gospel feel, it’s very earthy and very free which is what I love about it.

No because I still have those ballads on (the album) and I love singing those songs. There’s an amazing song by Dianne Warren on the CD that I really love, and that’s a huge ballad so there’s still that sort of thing there. You’ve an amazing mezzo soprano voice which spans four octaves. What do you think is special about your vocal range? I was classically trained which I suppose helps. I thought I was going to be an opera singer and so did my mum.

Would you go back to opera? I still do opera. I’ve recorded a couple of classical songs and I love the training behind it and the discipline. I think it’s a great foundation for any singer. You strike me as a shy person so how do you feel when you go on stage? I’ve been performing for such a long time that it feels natural and something that I do. You’re alright with 20,000 people staring at you? I’ve been alright so far. I still get nervous of course but somehow I get through it. I love what I do! You are a fellow vegetarian. Since you were twelve? Yeah What made you turn to vegetarianism? Once I knew that the sausage was a pig, I was like “no no.. no thank you”. What about when you go around to people’s houses? Do you ever feel bad? I do!

How do you take that moment and take that deep breath?

I get that when I go round to my sister’s in law! (laughs)

Usually it takes something quite drastic to happen and I felt it did take that with me in that what sparked me to leave was that I was told I had to do a record of covers which I didn’t want to do. And it just wasn’t me. So that sparked me

Barton Peveril Class of 75 Reunion WHEN three old school pals met for the first time since their sixth form days this photo brought back many memories and sparked plans for a class reunion - 40 years on. At the start in March the three knew of only six others from the Barton Peveril class of '75 but since then word of mouth, internet searches and the help of other enthusiasts have put the reunion organisers in touch with more than 100 of their college mates. The group’s locations range from Hampshire to as far afield as Australia and New Zealand and their list of occupations is almost

an A-Z of careers from accountant and business entrepreneur to writer and zoologist. The 'class of 75' started the sixth form in the year that Barton Peveril in Eastleigh became a sixth form college, and were the first graduates of the new system. It was previously a grammar school and half of this year group had attended since age 11. For the reunion on November 21, a return visit has been arranged to the college, now completely remodelled. The class of 75 will find that the 'New Block' has been replaced by the even newer

The Season Art Class Exhibition The Seasons Art Class Hampshire held its end of term exhibition at The Hilt, Chandlers Ford, on 21st May. The event was attended by students, visitors and guests from the Winchester, Southampton, Romsey, Itchen Valley and surrounding areas. The work on display included pencil drawings, oil pastel paintings covering a selection of different projects, watercolour landscapes and birds, and everything from abstract art to landscapes and trees in acrylic paint. The students produced all the exceptionally high standard of work on display which went from strength to strength as the course progressed. Some of the visitors were so impressed that they booked onto future drawing and painting classes with Seasons. All courses are designed to be fun for absolute beginners, who have never picked up a brush before, through to intermediate students. Courses are open to adults of all ages, and are geared to provide students all the help they require to develop their artistic skills. The curriculum is fun, comprehensive and interesting. Students are made to feel very welcome, with refreshments provided. The class is informal and fun, but is very much a teaching class, and the tutor goes through the techniques of each medium and project step by step. Take a look at some of the exhibition photos - these are all beginner students, look what they've achieved!! The next course starts on Thursday 10th September 2015 at The Hilt, Hiltingbury Road, Chandlers Ford. Do get in touch if you are interested, on 01962 676360.

Ocean Drive Living, Parchment Street Husband and Wife team Judy and Mike run Ocean Drive Living in Winchester’s Parchment Street and Judy told Discover that more people should explore beyond the High Street of towns and cities. “Most people gravitate toward the High Street but we are finding more and more that they are seeking out smaller shopping communities like Parchment Street and once they find us they just keep coming back.”

Forme, Parchment Street “An area such as ours with independent traders is an antidote to the homogenised high street, shopping becomes an experience.” Andrew Butling is owner of interior design studio and shop Forme in Parchment Street. “Personal service rather than the coldness of on-line shopping, and the fact we are very much a community makes it very easy to get up and go to work each day. Much of our business is repeat so we are very much a big footprint in the community.” 23

RECIPE

Veggie Bean Burgers Makes 8

Packed with flavour these burgers will be enjoyed by both meat-eaters and vegetarians. For a lovely nutty texture replace the sweetcorn with 100g chopped walnuts.

Ingredients: • • • • • • • • • • • • •

3 tbsp olive oil 1 large red onion, peeled and finely chopped 2 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed 4 spring onions, trimmed and finely chopped 1 carrot, peeled and grated 2 tsp chilli powder 2 x 400g cans mixed bean salad, drained and rinsed 100g canned sweetcorn, drained 100g fresh breadcrumbs 1 large egg 1 tbsp lime juice 4 tbsp fresh chopped coriander (or parsley) Toasted burger buns, baby spinach leaves and sliced tomatoes, to serve

Ready in 40 minutes, plus chilling The uncooked burgers freeze well, just place on a lined baking tray and freeze until solid then pack away into freezer bags. To cook from frozen, place the burgers on a lined baking tray, brush lightly with oil and bake for 25-30 minutes at 200C, fan 180C, Gas 6 until golden and piping hot.

TIP

24

1. Heat 1 tbsp of the oil in a frying pan and fry the chopped onion over a medium heat for 8-10 minutes until soft and golden. Add the garlic, spring onions and carrots and fry, stirring, for a further 2-3 minutes. Stir in the chilli powder.

2. Tip all the beans into a large bowl and roughly mash with a fork. Stir in the onion mixture along with the remaining ingredients and mix well to combine. Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper.

3. Divide and shape the mixture into 8 burgers. Cover and chill in the fridge for at least 30 minutes.

4. Heat the rest of the oil in a large nonstick frying pan over a medium heat and fry the burgers for 3-4 minutes on each side until golden brown (you may need to do this in two batches so add a little more oil, if needed). Drain on kitchen paper then serve in toasted burgers buns with spinach leaves and sliced tomatoes.

Winchester family amazed at the difference soft water has made! I had known about the benefits of water softeners for some time but more recently realised the difference it could make to my life day to day – not only saving me hours of time cleaning but also from my plumber I knew it would help to keep my heating system and boiler scale-free and in good working condition. The water in the South East, specifically the Winchester area, is very hard – the consequence is one many households can relate to – the dreaded limescale. Mrs. Mellor from Winchester was no exception. She said, “I live in a reasonably sized house with two bathrooms and a cloakroom and because the water is so hard in the Winchester area you can imagine my ongoing battle with trying to keep them clean. It was my shower that really frustrated me; because of the limescale it was almost impossible to keep the shower door smudge-free and the shower head scalefree. When I thought of the amount of money I had spent on spray limescale removers, I desperately needed to find a longer-term solution.

Deciding to use a local company was important for me to know that I’d have that level of customer service on my door step – our local Kinetico Dealer, Advanced Water Softeners, visited our home to explain the benefits and reassure us as to how easy the installation would be. The thought of freeing up more of my time and saying goodbye to scrubbing bathrooms meant my decision was easy – installation of our Kinetico water softener was pain-less and didn’t take long at all. In four months, I’ve already noticed the benefits – my taps are clean and shiny and I can now enjoy a free flowing shower; even the glass shower doors are smudge-free. I think I’ll even save on detergents. My only question is, why didn’t I do it sooner?”

Banish limescale from your Hampshire home forever!

Hampshire Food Festival Over 100 invited guests of Hampshire Fare gathered at THE PIG Hotel in the New Forest to celebrate the launch of the 15th Hampshire Food Festival. THE PIG is a shining example of an organisation serving its customers only the finest local produce. With all food either grown on site in the hotel’s breathtaking walled gardens or sourced from within 22 miles of the hotel, the venue for the launch was chosen to emphasise the message that local food is best. Local producers engaged enthusiastically with guests sharing stories of their food and drink whilst offering tastings. From world Mike Smales from Lyburn Cheese with Discover’s own Melanie Tinson! famous cheese to organically reared meat, handmade charcuterie to rapeseed oil, the freshest trout to craft ale there was something to impress every taste. Hampshire Fare masterminds the Hampshire Food Festival which this year is being supported by local law firm, Eric Robinson. Hampshire Fare is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to supporting the county’s food and drink producers. Events this year include farm and vineyard tours, pop-up dining experiences, jam and chocolate making classes, cooking demonstrations and more. All events can be viewed on the food group’s website, www.hampshirefare.co.uk, where there is also a competition being run in association with The Southern Co-operative to win a Gourmet Break in Winchester. GARDENING

Keeping Healthy in the Sun by Pippa Greenwood www.pippagreenwood.com

There is something lovely about this part of the summer. The veg plot tends to be in overdrive and there are some delicious fruits cropping too. But sometimes your beloved flower beds and borders, pots and planters can be looking ever-so-slightly sorry for themselves. There is often a distinct midsummer-flop.

You planted up your flower beds and numerous pots and containers to make them look good but how can you keep them looking on top form for as long as possible? Regular feeding is essential, particularly for anything growing in a container. Often crammed into a fairly small space and with compost whose fertiliser content is pretty well used up after a few weeks, by July plants in pots can be close to starving if you’ve not fed them regularly. At this time of year I would still feed herbaceous perennials and annuals growing in open ground too, but I suggest you resist the temptation to feed shrubs as these could be encouraged to put on new growth which will not be toughened up enough by the time winter comes; this late growth is then very prone to frost damage. A tomato feed with a high potash level works well for anything that you grow primarily for the flowers so every time you feed your tomatoes make up a bit of extra feed and pop it onto flowering plants. I tend to buy concentrated tomato food by the mini-tanker full as this works out much more economical! Make sure that everything is deadheaded regularly, both the faded flowers and if necessary remove the flower stem too. On

soft stemmed plants you may be able to make to do it using your thumb nail, but a pair of sharp scissors or similar often makes for the quickest, neatest and least messy job. Do this as soon as the flower starts to deteriorate so that no energy whatsoever is used to form seed heads and it will make a huge difference to the performance you see the plants put on over the next few weeks. I am a great believer in the ‘hair cut’ approach where perennials are given a trim using scissors or shears as soon as their flowering period is over. Do this promptly and follow it with a good feed and you can often encourage a second, later flush of flowers too. If plants have become a little too tall or there has been a lot of rainfall they can literally flop over, clogging up the lawn on borders next to the grass, and generally looking a real mess. This is easily solved if you check that stakes and other supports are still doing their job and re-position them if necessary, taking care not to snap any flower stems in the process. You may even find that you need to add a bit of extra support or tie in a few of the taller or more wayward stems – the foamcovered wire works really well for this. ...Continued on page 34

...Continued from page 32

At this time of year many flowers succumb to common diseases. This is how to deal with them: Powdery Mildew Keep the plant well watered at the base but avoid wetting the leaves and spray with a suitable fungicide if necessary

Aphids Remove with a strong jet of water, introduce ladybirds or spray with an insecticide

Leaf spots Just pick off the worst affected leaves

Rusts Pick off the worst affected leaves, try to keep the foliage dry and spray with a suitable insecticide

Caterpillars Pick off by hand or spray with a suitable biological or chemical control Keeping on top of these small problems is essential - regular checks should allow you to take prompt action, so avoiding too much damage occurring and often meaning that you do not even need to spray. Weeds tend to be growing rapidly too, so try to remove these as they make for a lot of competition for water, food and even light. Pulling them out or

hoeing them off when they are still fairly small is a much easier and more efficient way to deal with them than trying to pull out a massive, long-rooted triffid that has already done a lot of damage. If the weather is dry, regular watering will also help to keep your flower beds and containers looking their best. To minimise water wastage and the risk of those delicate petals becoming scorched, I suggest that you should only water in the evening or, if this is not possible, very early in the morning. A less frequent but thorough drenching is a lot more beneficial than very frequent but light waterings. So, with a little extra TLC everything in the garden can still look gorgeous for a long while yet!

Our Meadows

Call us for your free no-obligation quote

By David Rumble, Head of Conservation and Education at HIWWT Before the Second World War, meadows dripping with wildflowers and humming with insects would have been a familiar sight across the UK. However in Hampshire our flower-rich grasslands have declined by a staggering 98% in the last century.

Tel 07927 471929 www.brushupdecorating.co.uk claire@brushupdecorating.co.uk

Unfortunately agricultural use have hit meadows hard. Growing towns and cities have also been instrumental in the loss of these habitats.

Meadows are home to a huge range of grasses and flowers, which provide nectar and other food for beautiful bees, butterflies and hundreds of other insects. They also help protect our rivers from pollution, hold together healthy soils that store carbon, and enable landscapes to retain water and reduce flooding. Hampshire’s speciality is ‘water meadows’ which were traditionally irrigated with river water to maintain good grass for sheep and cattle. They are now among Hampshire and the Isle of Wight’s richest places for wildlife. Good examples are Winnall Moors and along the Itchen Navigation between Winchester and Eastleigh. Meanwhile our Hoe Road Memorial Meadow in Bishops Waltham is the Coronation Meadow for Hampshire, meaning it’s a flagship nature haven for the county. Seeds from donor plants there are used to restore other grasslands across Hampshire. The meadow can be sponsored in someone’s memory, making it a tribute that will bloom year after year. Though the decline of our meadows is shocking, we have an opportunity to recognise the pockets of meadow that we still have left, and take vital action to protect and restore them for future generations. 37

“We regularly have 15+ disabled children training and playing alongside their disabled and ablebodied friends and family every week”, said Sharon Collins, one of the player’s parents. “But Hornets is more than just a sports club – although it enables disabled young people to excel at sport, its sometimes bigger role is helping players to forget their worries, build positive self-esteem and personal confidence and help forge lasting friendships. Hornets provides a really positive outlet to channel frustrations created by the physical limitations of daily life.”

Hampshire Hornets provides the opportunity for disabled children and teenagers aged between 7-19 years to excel at sport. It burns with a passion to motivate, challenge and inspire young people who are often marginalised at school and within the wider community to play fast and at times, fiercely competitive, basketball.

Right Side of the Road Taking your car on a holiday to Europe is a great way to avoid exorbitant airfares, hidden airport and airline costs and rip-off duty-free. And don’t get me started on airport crowds and stress. However, before setting off for the continent in your car, there are a number of boxes you should tick before you get behind the wheel. Here’s a very simple checklist… • Prepare the proper documents: Ensure all car documents are up to date, including the insurance papers and V5c ownership document. Take both parts of drivers’ licences for all appointed drivers. • Preparing the car for driving on the continent: Book an off-schedule MoT, it will throw up any mechanical or electrical

fix my garage door.co.uk

problems to be attended to. In many European countries, it is illegal to drive with a broken exterior light for instance. Packing a full replacement bulb kit is worthwhile, too. • Take an emergency warning triangle (two in Spain) and a hi-vis jacket (some countries require a vest for each passenger, too, so check before you go). If you are driving in France, breathalysers are still on the legal list of items that you are required to have in the car, but there is NO FINE for not having them. • British cars should wear a GB sticker on the back to identify their country of origin, OR have Europlates bearing the blue GB symbol. • Headlights: You will also need to adapt your headlights to avoid dazzling oncoming vehicles. You can buy conversion kits, or your main dealer may be able to adjust the beam. Drive safely, have a wonderful time and remember – never drive faster than your guardian angel can fly. Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Justin Friel feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving

people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Winchester area and Justin is finding that his approach is

a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done

work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Justin a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Festivals with a

You might imagine that all music festivals are versions of the televised Glastonbury Festival. All the beautiful young things dancing to the latest music, some of which an older generation may not recognise as music at all! Yes, there are some huge festivals taking place this summer, attracting the very top bands and with prices to match. But there are far more smaller events taking place which are targeted at families and/or an older audience, which are very affordable and, best of all, are local. A little bit of knowledge goes a long way so here are a couple of tips:

r Don’t judge an event purely by the headline acts - some of the best performances come from little-known names. And if there is more than one stage you’ll have a choice of artists to watch throughout the day.

r Do your homework by going to Youtube,

Soundcloud or a music streaming site, and getting a taste of the particular acts that you might want to see

r Travel light if you can. If the event has

several stages you’ll want to move without having to take a pile of stuff with you

r Take a jumper or a jacket you can tie round your waist (and sit on if the ground is dry), rather than a coat you have to carry

r Don’t wear white – festivals

are always on fields, festival food doesn’t often involve cutlery and people do spill drinks

r You’ll be walking before, dancing during and walking again after, so do wear comfortable shoes (or wellies if rain is forecast)

are hosted by OMG (see page 52 for details) 53
