NEXT ISSUE: DIARY DATES Editorial copy deadline: 26 August Advertisement copy deadline: 28 August Distributed: Drop 1 w/c 5 September Drop 2 w/c 29 September

DISTRIBUTION This Winchester edition of Discover is published every other month and distributed by hand. It goes through the doors of households in Winchester including Kings Worthy, Headbourne Worthy, Weeke, Harestock, St Cross, Abbots Barton, Sleepers Hill, Hyde, Teg Down Meads, Sarum, Olivers Battery and Badger Farm. This is a total of around 9000 properties over a three week distribution period.

We’re coming home I’m not much of a football fan, but when it’s a big event like the World Cup, like the rest of the country, I get swept along with the enthusiasm. Clearly, supporting our national team didn’t demand much of my attention this year. We think of ourselves as a footballing nation but a) we just don’t do well in international competitions and b) it’s definitely of more interest to men. However something we are great at is music, and what’s more it’s equally appreciated by male and female, young and old alike. Whilst the internet has brought both its benefits and its challenges to this industry, the one part which has seen huge growth is that of live music, and particularly festivals. In 1970 Michael Eavis opened his 150-acre farm to 1,500 people, each of whom paid just £1 to watch a handful of pop and folk performers. With that the Glastonbury Festival was born. But that was just the beginning and this year there are more events than ever, many of which feature lesser known names and showcase up and coming talent. The good news is that although many venues are miles away and have a pretty hefty entrance fee, smaller festivals run locally and are more affordable. Also, of particular appeal for those of us long out of teens or who have young children, being driveable within an hour means you can come home to your own bed! We’ve put together a page of the festivals we know about over the next couple of months, and included arts and film festivals too. Although not until October, I can personally recommend Austentatious at the Winchester Comedy Festival in October. We saw this at the Edinburgh Fringe a couple of years ago – so funny, and really really clever. I’ve booked my tickets already so don’t mind if it sells out now! (Tip, it’s cheaper to phone to book than doing it online).

HOBBIES

Have You Got The Baking Bug? by Kate McLelland Cupcakes make you smile!

In recent years baking has become a bit of a national obsession. With events such as the Sugarcraft, Cake Decorating & Baking Show visiting large conference venues in London, Birmingham and Manchester, new cake-craft shops opening in our high streets and countless community bakeoffs taking place all over the country, it would appear that the UK has been well and truly bitten by the baking bug. Home baking has always featured heavily when it comes to local fundraising events: if you visit any school fete or village fair you are almost certain to find a stall heaving with homemade cakes. But nowadays you won’t just see any old cakes displayed for sale: you’ll find creations made and decorated with real flair and passion. Much of the renewed interest in what can be achieved with butter, sugar, eggs and flour can be ascribed to the BBC’s now legendary TV

6

show, The Great British Bake Off, which features a team of amateur bakers (observed by expert judges Paul Hollywood and Mary Berry) taking part in progressively harder baking challenges over a period of ten weeks. The show promises to attract an audience of over eight million viewers when Series 5 is broadcast later this year. The first episode of GBBO traditionally kicks off with “Cakes” and it’s fitting that this aspect of baking should open the competition, as cake making and decorating has become one of the most popular hobbies in Britain today. Perhaps it is the combination of cookery and artistic skills that has captured the public’s imagination. The current trend is to create specialist cakes that are not only delicious to eat, but beautiful to look at, and bakers are now using a range of specialist tools and equipment to help them achieve stunning effects for their cake creations. A whole industry has sprung up around cake making and decorating and it’s easy to find a vast selection of professional cutters, paper cases, novelty cake tins, sprinkles, icing figures, ribbons, boxes and cake boards, either by shopping at specialist high street outlets or by searching for cake equipment suppliers

online. Cupcakes are especially popular: decorated with butter cream icing, sprinkled with edible glitter and often topped with exotic decorations, they can easily be turned into individual, quirky masterpieces. These little cakes can even be displayed on a multilayered framework (a “cupcake tower”) in place of a traditional wedding cake. The name “cupcake” first appeared in an American cookery book published in 1796. They were so named because they were baked in individual pottery cups, ramekins or moulds, the size of a small teacup. Their popularity was revived in the 2000s thanks to the US TV series “Sex and the City”, when lead characters Carrie and Miranda scoffed cupcakes from New York’s famous Magnolia Bakery as they discussed their love lives. The craze is still going strong today, with UK artisan bakeries getting in on the act, using ever more exotic ingredients and themes to tempt us. These days you can buy special tin moulds for cupcakes and it’s possible to experiment with a huge range of recipes, from the ordinary (Raspberry Swirl Cupcakes) to the bizarre (Pumpkin Spice Cupcakes with Cream Cheese Frosting). Try them out on family and friends, or if you’re feeling ambitious

you can even enter the National Cupcake Championships. You can view the entry guidelines at www. nationalcupcakeweek.co.uk but hurry, as the deadline for entries is 15th August. Although many people enjoy pottering alone in the kitchen, trying out new recipes and finding original ways to decorate their cakes, The Great British Bake Off seems to have inspired a real enthusiasm for communal baking, whether that’s about learning together or indulging in friendly competition. It’s understandable to want to share your baking triumphs – and disasters – with someone else, and participating in a group can encourage you to try out different techniques and develop new skills. You can look up cake decorating courses in your local area by going to www.cakedecoratingcourses. co.uk or alternatively visit your

local library to find out if they hold a list. If you fancy getting away from it all in order to really focus on your art, then there are a number of cake decorating short breaks and holidays available, with one day courses costing from around £100 (not including accommodation). If you want a real holiday experience you could sign up for a cake-making course in France, with accommodation and meals included for £649 per person. See www.frenchcakebreaks.com for more details. For those who simply don’t have the money to spend on courses (having already laid out a small fortune on gourmet sprinkles), there are a number of tutorials on YouTube (www.youtube.com) that will teach you everything you need to know, from creating a basic cake mixture to advanced piping techniques.

If you don’t enjoy learning alone, you can always invite a friend around to experiment with you, or get together with neighbours to create your own version of the Great British Bake Off. One thing’s for certain: there’ll be no lack of volunteers to help when it comes to tasting the results!

GARDENING

Mediterranean Magic By Pippa Greenwood Your very own relaxing haven

If you can’t get away this year, how about creating your own Mediterranean hotspot in your garden? Even if you do manage to escape to the sun for a week or two this year, you’ll still have the rest of the summer at home and a little slice of Italy, France or Greece outside your back door will bring happy memories flooding back.

The first thing to do when making a Mediterranean corner in your garden, is to choose the sunniest spot available – it’ll not only make sitting out there more enjoyable, but will also mean that you can install some serious sun-loving plants too. Painting the nearby house, shed or garage wall with white masonry paint will help to create the right atmosphere and look. At the same time it will help to reflect our sunlight – often a bit washed out compared to more southern climes - so providing a stronger light for the type of plants that appreciate it. Mediterranean gardens often make full use of the walls and any other vertical surfaces, so put up pot-rings, pot-hangers and brackets with hanging baskets, pots and wall baskets and cram them full of plants. If the containers are small they will need very regular watering so go for some of the more drought-tolerant plants such as geraniums, pelargoniums and sedums. Plants in pots are a must and if possible choose stone or terracotta containers as these add to the Mediterranean feel.

20

If you want to make brand new pots look more weathered try painting them with a solution of plain yoghurt – it may sound crazy but this will help to encourage rapid colonisation by mosses, algae and lichens all of which will help to give that well-loved look. Any new hard landscaping such as wall, paths or patios and terraced surfaces will look best in natural stone and there are now also gorgeous looking terracotta tiles available that are suitable for use in the garden. All these help to give the right feel and bring about a definite warmth. Terracotta tiles can also have a storageheater effect too – after a long, hot day they will have absorbed a good deal of heat and this will then be released gradually in the evening making it even more appealing to sit out and enjoy that glass of something continental. Add interest to a vertical surface - be it a wall with supports attached or an arch or pergola - by planting a vine. They have attractive leaves and there are plenty to choose from that will fruit well in our climate. You may not be able to create your

own vintage but the vines will look gorgeous especially when draped with a few bunches of grapes. Glazed tiles, wall-hangings and even the odd ornament or two can also add to the Mediterranean look, but make sure you choose items that won’t be instantly bleached by the sun. If you have wooden garden furniture which is past its best, paint it white or a vivid blue, and buy a brightly coloured tablecloth. Eating alfresco will instantly make you feel like you are on holiday. If you look at photos of Mediterranean scenes, you’ll notice that much of the hard landscaping is ‘shabby-chic’. Rough plastering, crumbly mortar and plants growing in cracks create an authentic feel.

Try growing your own oranges or lemons. It is easier than you might have thought and with our generally milder winters some gardeners are even managing to keep these plants outside all year round with only the minimum of protection. Growing your citrus tree in a good-sized terracotta pot means that you can move it into a more protected spot if necessary. With their wonderful silvery grey leaves and their often rather untidy or gnarled shape, olives too are a plant well worth considering. These Mediterranean classics are now readily available in many garden centres. In warmer parts of the country and especially in city-centre gardens crops of edible olives are now becoming more common too. Olives are best grown in a large container unless you have a warm

Some plants just spell out Mediterranean Magic – try geraniums and pelargoniums, aeoniums and sempervivums, rosemary, thyme, oregano and pretty well anything with silvery foliage. Plant up beds, borders and pots for colour and don’t forget, that in the case of the herbs, your new holiday destination will also benefit from a subtle Mediterranean aroma too. Active change for home, work and life 27

And Another Thing... by Tom Hughes I am getting married. This year. To a woman. Things are being set in motion, heads of steam are building, snowballs are rolling, rabbits are running. You get the picture. Sarah and I (or is it me and Sarah? I never know) met when we were old enough to know better, and fell in love anyway. But what started as a “bit of a do” has morphed into something much, much bigger. Where to start? Shoes, let’s start with the shoes. What is it about shoes and women? I have a pair of black shiny loafers for work. In fact I have three pairs. I also have a pair of brown slip-ons that I step into to go for the milk and the paper. The back of them are squashed down because sometimes I can’t be bothered putting them on properly if I’m say, just putting the bins out. The trainers I wear to go the gym are so tatty I think even the tramp in the precinct would turn his nose up at them.

What I’m saying is that the look I strive for daily is shabby chic. Ok, just shabby then. But as I recently discovered, shoes for women are a completely different kettle of battered cod altogether. If weddings send women funny, then wedding shoes send them to planet Giggly Girly. Because I wanted Sarah’s day to be special, I needed to make sure that everything was perfect from the ground up. So we toddle off into Manchester. Ok, so how difficult can it be? You can’t bloomin’ move for shoe shops. We wouldn’t be long surely? Sarah had a spring in her step as we marched determinedly past Clarks, Footlocker and all the other shoe wear emporiums that I have never seen the inside of. Then we stopped outside a posh looking outlet called Selfridges. After dodging the scary looking perfume sprayers prowling the make-up department, we arrived at the shoe concession, where we were suddenly surrounded by gorgeousness. Casually, I turned over one of the stilettoes. Oh, I thought to myself, that must be a European

size….495. I put my glasses on – 495 quid!? The room started to spin. I looked up to see Sarah deep in conversation with a handsome young man who was holding up a pair of sparkly shoes so delicate and strappy that they were almost invisible to the naked eye. Usually, if I see Sarah giggling and smiling with a good looking guy I get jealous. But when he stood up and did a little twirl of delight, I began to relax. I sat down next to a misty eyed Sarah who held up a shiny pink box and said, “Darling, these are the ones.” Do you remember the scene at the end of Pulp Fiction when Tim Roth opens the briefcase and a golden light shines out? A similar thing happened in Selfridges. The lid fell away and there they were, laying together like two perfect sparkly poodles. “Hello Tom, we are the Choo twins. My name is Jimmy and this is my brother - he’s called Jimmy Choo!” Sarah tried them on. She walked up and down, they did look amazing on her. “Can I have them, please?” “If it’s what you want darling, you

can have them.”

“Over here, next to my thumb.”

Sarah hugged me tight. She broke away, I saw tears in her eyes. The handsome guy who sold them to her looked like he was about to sob with joy. They were wrapped and taken to the till where I handed over my card. And then, as the pretty girl keyed in the price, I started crying too.

“Oh that? And how –“

Ok, that was that. The pain was just about bearable. I had survived. Or had I? Imagine a boxer against the ropes, his gum shield is out and the towel is on the canvas. Do the punches stop landing? Not a bit of it.

“Three hundred quid.” “A bargain, I’ll take two.” “Don’t be funny.” My squashed down slip ons didn’t come with a matching flat cap. There isn’t a matching pair of gloves to go with my corduroy trousers. But maybe it’s just because I don’t do co-ordination. Not really what your bride wants to hear when she is planning a wedding, is it? To be honest, I always thought

“Tom darling, this is the bag that goes with the shoes, isn’t it lovely?” “Where? Where is this bag?” “Here, here in my hand.” “Where in your hand?”

that me and fashion were strangers. That is until we left the shoe concession and went to choose my outfit. The fabulous gentleman in the menswear department could just see me in a slim fitting Hugo Boss. He picked out my suit, stood me in front of a full length mirror, turned to Sarah and went ‘ooh’. Sarah joined in, “Ooh Tom, that looks absolutely lovely on you, don’t you think?” “Do you know something Sarah? I think I could get used to this twirling business….”

Tom Hughes is a writer from the North of England. Befuddled and bemused by the modern world, Tom, when he has nothing better to do (which is most of the time) likes to commit his musings to paper. Follow Tom and Sarah’s wedding at groomsdaybook.com Project1:Layout 1

LIFE BEGINS

Three Essential Tips for the IT Phobic By Kate McLelland

“I was too busy bringing up the children”, “I’m not technically minded”, “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks”. Whatever excuse you’ve used over the years to avoid learning about it, information technology is here to stay. These days so many of the things we do are dependent on the internet and in future years our interaction with the online world is set to increase still further. If you’ve never held a mouse in your hand (except for the furry kind), prepare for the world as you know it to change beyond all recognition.

Tip One: get hold of a computer Buying a computer doesn’t necessarily mean a huge financial outlay. There are Microsoftauthorised dealers from whom you can buy a “bundle” of refurbished computer equipment (including hard drive, monitor, mouse, keyboard, software and a one year warranty) for under £200. Allow a further £30£60+VAT for a local computer engineer to set up the equipment if you don’t have anyone who can do it for you. If you prefer a portable version you can buy a new laptop computer from about £300 upwards. Smaller, tablet computers are available from £220 but if you like a traditional 32

keyboard you may find it harder to get to grips with the tablet’s touchscreen functions.

mistakes or losing information: most of the errors you will make can be easily corrected.

Borrowing is fine if you have a friend or neighbour willing to offer lengthy periods of access to their home computer. If you are visiting a local library to use their equipment, you may need to book in advance.

There are a number of books available from high street newsagents that explain computing in very simple, basic terms, so it may help to buy one of those, particularly if it has a glossary in the back where you can look up any words you don’t understand.

Tip two: find a good teacher Once you’ve mastered the basic operation of mouse and screen you’ll need someone to show you how everything else works, and at this point you have two options: ask someone you know to teach you, or go for professional help. In September and January many of the local colleges start courses teaching you how to become IT literate, and you may also enjoy the experience of learning with like-minded people. If you don’t know anyone who can teach you the basics, Age UK can help you find a computer course in your area. You can call them on 0800 169 6565 or alternatively check with your library to find a local training centre.

Tip three: don’t panic! Computer circuits are used in everything from washing machines to mobile phones these days, so computers should really have lost their ability to scare us. Don’t worry about making

Not just for shopping A recent study in America discovered that older people who regularly spent time online were one third less likely to suffer from depression than their peers who did not use the internet. The study, which contacted 3,075 people, found that access to the internet helped with issues of loneliness and social isolation. Out of all the reasons offered by the IT phobic for not learning basic computing skills, the ultimate excuse is probably “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks”. Phobics may therefore be dismayed to hear that the same US study found people in their 80s, 90s and even their 100s were still capable of learning to use a computer.

Summertime Blues Some years we barely see the sun at all, unless looking at old holiday photos counts. Then suddenly we’re all aquiver with the latest weather forecasts, and before you know it the shops are stocking sunscreen and fishing hats again. But let’s not forget the downside to summer. Mowers and strimmers - it’s bad enough when it’s your own and you have to cut the grass, but the sporadic, deafening noise pollution all around is enough to send anyone scurrying indoors. There’s no excuse now not to do all those outdoor painting jobs you’ve been putting off since last year. Wearing shorts again – I’m not sure the world-atlarge will ever be ready for the sight of my milkbottle white pins.

More flesh on display, from both sexes, than a butcher’s shop window - and not always so tastefully arranged. Traffic - there’s always some idiot on the road with a caravan, in front of me with my caravan. Bitey things - and always when you least expect them. Roadworks - it wouldn’t be summer without endless lines of sunbathing roadcones. Just when we’ve got used to the idea of summer being back, it gets rained off. 36

Sunny Summer Days... Or Not By Ted Bruning

Ahhh, it’s sunny July at last; the sky is blue; the air is warm and your neighbourhood smells delightfully of sun-tan lotion and barbecue. Of course, being British, we understand that our summers are never a glorious succession of hot dry days and long evenings of tennis and Pimms. Indeed, it has even been known to rain sometimes. But let’s forget about the weather for a moment and focus on the climate – the difference being that the weather is what actually happens to you, while the climate is what weather becomes when people start analyzing it. The other difference is that climate is almost predictable but weather most certainly isn’t. The wedding planners, barbecue chefs, church fête organisers etcetera want to know when is the best time for the wedding/barbecue/fête/day-trip or whatever? But the best answer is – and it’s a truly British answer, this – none of them. And any of them. So let’s narrow it down. Which is usually the least rainy month of summer? It has to be July, surely. 38

Wrong! July is usually the wettest, actually, with an average of 101mm over the five years 200812. Then – another big surprise – was August with 91.6mm, then September with 77.1mm, and taking gold by a healthy margin, was June with only 50.5mm. Mind you, June 2012 was also the rainiest month of all five summers in the sample with a squelching 157.8mm, and the two biggest rain-induced flash floods in living in memory weren’t in July but August – Lynmouth in 1952 and Boscastle in 2004. This, of course, being the difference between weather and climate. All right then, which is the sunniest, i.e. which has the best average of sunny hours per day (which we shall call SHPD for the sake of brevity)? This one has to be July, right? Uh-uh. The 10year average for July is 6 SHPD, better than August at 5.5 SHPD and September (when of course the days are shorter anyway) at only 5 SHPD; but the winner is once again June with 6.9 SHPD. Still, July 2013 racked up an average of 8.2 SHPD, which is a record in recent years. July is, at least, the warmest month of summer, with average temperatures ranging from 13.723.4C over the past 20 years; but only just. August has been a close challenger, with an average

low just edging ahead of July’s at 13.8C but an average high just missing at 23.1C; so not much in it there. June and September, though, fall woefully short with ranges of 11.8-21C and 11.420C – it’s almost as if they aren’t even trying. All this, of course, depends on where you are. The further north you go the colder it gets, right? Well, yes; but not directly because you’re north – England has vineyards at the same latitude that Canada has polar bears. The skies above us are a battleground where four sets of weather fight for supremacy: Western Scotland gets its from the Maritime Polar region (cold and wet); Eastern Scotland and the North of England get theirs from the Continental Polar (cold and dry); Wales and the West Country are at the mercy of the Maritime Tropical (warm and wet); and East Anglia and the South of England bask in the Continental Tropical (warm and dry). Hence the hottest day on record was 10th August 2003 in Faversham, Kent (38.5C), while the coldest was 30th December 1995 at Altnaharran, Sutherland (-27.2C). Well, that’s me decided, then. This year’s barbecues will be in Faversham. Which is handy, because that’s where my Mum lives.
