Have I got a deal for you I’ve noticed over the years that bargaining is not a thing that many Brits do. Being a largely reserved bunch, we accept the price as is, and buy online rather than speaking to people. Still, who doesn’t love a deal and there’s money to be saved for those that ask.
Sometimes you don’t even need to ask, especially in a competitive market like phone or utility services. I was looking recently at changing my phone and broadband provider. I’d narrowed down my supplier of choice, was at the point of pressing the ‘go’ button on their website, when I realised there was something I wasn’t clear about. So I phoned them up. I didn’t mention that I was just about to buy online, but having discussed my query the salesperson then made me an offer of six months at half price. I can understand the logic; I might have just hung up and still not quite pressed the go button, and with the offer he got a ‘yes’ from me. So I’m thinking ‘how good is that’? But if he was prepared to give 6 months at half price without being asked, why didn’t I ask if he could give me more? I didn’t even think of it, that’s why! It’s a game though. If I’d phoned with my query and opened with ‘I’m about to buy online but have a question…’ I’d likely have been offered nothing because I’d already said ‘I’m going to buy’. Whilst you aren’t about to start haggling with the shops in West Quay, or asking for a discount on a loaf of bread in the supermarket, spotting the opportunity to save a few pounds here and there is a worthwhile effort. Just don’t be offended if the seller gives a firm no!

TECHNOLOGY

The Best Christmas Gadgets For Him Buying gadgets can be tricky: if you’re buying for a grownup there’s a very good chance that they’ve already bought the gadgets they want. But don’t despair, because it turns out that there are lots of gadgetrelated gifts you can buy for the man who has everything. A good place to start is with a case. You can spend hundreds if you want something from a name designer, but firms such as TuffLuv make really nice vintage leather Kindle cases for around £40. And of course you can get leather cases for other devices such as laptops and tablets too. If he hasn’t already got a tablet, there are plenty of alternatives to the all-conquering iPad and iPad Mini. Amazon’s Kindle Fire HD (£89) is good for ebooks and movies, and a range of affordable Windows 8 tablets have been launched by the likes of Asus, Acer and Toshiba, all below £200. If he fancies himself as the next Jamie Oliver, Belkin’s Chef Stand and Wand (£29) is a smart gift idea. It’s a tablet stand designed specifically for the kitchen, enabling him to see the recipe (or the tutorial videos if he’s using 6
cooking apps or YouTube) without getting it covered in food. If he’s more of an outdoor cooking type, iGrill’s range of smartphoneconnected thermometers (from around £34.99) give him a new toy to play with while he’s burning burgers. One of the more unusual new gadgets we’ve seen is the PlayBulb, a bluetooth speaker that’s also an LED light bulb. The £59 device is controlled via an iPhone and Android app that enables you play music and, er, turn the light on and off. For sporty types there are stacks of gadget gifts, such as the Fitbit Flex activity tracker (£75), the Zepp motion sensor for tennis players (£129), Garmin’s Forerunner GPS watches (£89) and the TomTom Multi-Sport GPS Watch (£149). If you really want to delight a gadget fan, this year’s hot technology is the smartwatch - of which LG’s G Watch R is one of the nicest. The price hadn’t been announced as we went to press but the Androidcompatible smartwatch is likely to be keenly priced -
not least because Apple has its own smartwatch, which is likely to be a big seller this Christmas. If he’s already shelled out for a smart watch, how about a drone? Parrot’s AR.Drone 2.0 (£224) is a smartphone-controlled quadricopter, a flying drone that can stream high definition video back to the owner’s phone or tablet. There are drones to suit all budgets, from the £36 Quadricopter X4 to drones costing more than £600. Many bigger drones are designed to carry GoPro cameras, which are small high definition cameras that can be attached to almost anything. Our current favourite video, a YouTube hit, was made by strapping a GoPro to a dog’s collar and then letting it sprint down to the beach for a swim, but we’ve seen GoPros strapped to bike helmets, to remote controlled cars and even to musical instruments. Expect to pay from around £199. You don’t have to spend lots of money for a great gadget gift, though. The excellent Aeropress coffee maker produces brews that rival the world’s most expensive coffee machines, and you can pick one up brand new - for around £25.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Justin Friel feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving
people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Winchester area and Justin is finding that his approach is
a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done
work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Justin a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

GARDENING
I’m Dreaming of a Green Christmas by Pippa Greenwood With Christmas just around the corner, there is always plenty to do. True the garden side of things may be a little less busy than usual, but everything else seems to be going into overdrive.
I love giving presents, but only when I think that the recipient will really enjoy receiving it - whether that gift is a thing of beauty or something totally practical. With gardening as one of the nation’s top pastimes, I’m sure you’ll know more than a few gardeners so here are a few ideas for things which I am sure most green fingered friends would be delighted to receive. If you know a newish gardener or someone who has recently taken on a garden then the basic garden tools are always well received, especially if you choose good quality, sturdy ones. So think fork, spade and rake – yes, they are difficult to wrap but worth the effort. For anyone gripped by the Grow Your Own bug and who’d appreciate a helping hand you could give one of my ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood ‘ gift cards – they choose the veg they want to grow and I send them out, at the right time for planting and accompanied by weekly advice and tips emails….it couldn’t be simpler! Find out more at www. pippagreenwood.com Weeding is always an issue so a hoe is useful or for smaller spaces (such as in between plants, in gravel, between paving, in asparagus beds or to tackle weeds
12
within planters) try the hand held red-handled weeders – I think they’re indispensable. Small but always appreciated gifts could include a few packets of vegetable seeds. Although many garden centres are currently crammed full of tinselly, twinkly items for the festive season, most already have a good number of seeds in stock. Choose some particularly scrumptious varieties of vegetables or for those who are more concerned about looks than taste, how about some flamboyantly colourful flowers to brighten up their garden? If you want to spend a bit more and the person loves growing things from seed, a heated propagator makes a fantastic gift. With tomatoes, peppers, aubergines and many of the fancier ornamentals needing to be sown soon, it’ll be a gift put to use straight away. Gardening gloves too are something that any gardener can always have more of. Particularly useful are some of the gauntlet style gloves which are perfect if you have to tackle a pruning job on a thorny plant or one with really rough or sharp leaves. Totally practical, but gauntlets can make even a really unpleasant job so much easier – I even used mine to harvest holly for decorating the house last Christmas. Alternatively,
there are many lower-priced types of gloves available with gripping pads on the fingers or with leather toughened strips across the knuckles to make sure that your hands don’t get too much of a beating while you are out in the garden. Classic greens, ravishing reds or funky florals, gloves are definitely not boring. Many gardeners and nongardeners alike love having birds in the garden. They not only help to keep certain pest numbers down, but they also add an extra charm to the garden environment. How about a peanut feeder, nest box or perhaps even a bird table; there are many designs available from the modern to the rustic. For the husband, wife or partner who is less inclined to help with the tough jobs in the garden, give them a gentle nudge by gifting a brand new garden fork and spade; but if you feel that they really are
beyond help, then admit defeat and give them a garden lounger or perhaps even a hammock? As container gardening continues to rise in popularity, another idea is to give a few gorgeous looking containers - either empty for the friend or relative to decide what to put in it themselves, or make them into a complete gift by planting them up with a selection of plants and under planting them with bulbs which you know will bring extra delight next year. Finally, don’t forget the plants themselves. Garden centres are currently crammed full of a delightful array of plants, mainly with houseplants being perfect for providing bright colour indoors at this time of year – take a look at the poinsettias, cyclamen, indoor azaleas and jasmines to get an idea of just some of the plants that would be great to give as gifts and remember when you buy

LIFE BEGINS
Confronting the Cold Some Simple Tips to Keep Safe and Warm Over Winter By Kate McLelland Over 24,000 people will be so badly affected by the cold this winter that their lives will be at risk. The charity Age UK has estimated that 1.7 million older people in Britain cannot afford to heat their homes, and many have admitted to living mainly in one room to save on energy bills. In Britain we have some of the least energy efficient homes in Europe and many households could reduce fuel bills by using simple techniques such as cavity insulation. You can check your eligibility for a government grant towards energy saving improvements at www.gov.uk. In addition to grants, there are payments available to help with fuel bills. People born on or before 5 July 1952 will get tax-free, automatic payments of between £100-£300 if they are receiving the State Pension or another social security benefit (not including Housing Benefit, Council Tax Reduction, Child Benefit or Universal Credit). You can learn more about Winter Fuel Payments by calling 08459 151515 (8.30am-4.30pm, Monday to Friday) or visiting www.gov.uk/ winter-fuelpayment. If you’re not 18
eligible for government support, there are still some things you can do to keep heating bills down, for example, comparing your current gas and electricity supplier’s prices against other providers at www.uswitch.com. The expression “Every little helps” may have been hijacked by one of our leading supermarkets but it’s particularly true if you can’t afford to heat your house. Here are some more practical steps you can take to keep the cold at bay:
Clothing and exercise It’s better to wear several thin layers rather than one thick one, because each layer traps warm air close to the body. Choose clothes to made from fleecy fabrics, wool or cotton. A lot of warmth is lost through the head and neck, so don’t hesitate to wear a hat and scarf indoors. Try not to sit still for long periods of time, but if you have to sit, keep your feet off the ground and cover yourself with a shawl or a blanket.
Energy saving tips Draw your curtains as soon as it gets dark to stop the heat escaping. Keep windows and doors closed. Have the central heating system regularly serviced to ensure that it is working as efficiently as possible, keep the
chimney swept and do your best to insulate against draughts. Set your central heating to the right temperature - your main living room should be around 21ºC (70ºF) and your bedroom should be around 18ºC (65ºF). It’s more energy efficient to extend the period your heating is on than turn up the thermostat when it’s cold. Switch TVs and microwaves off at the wall rather than leaving them on standby, and don’t add any more water than necessary when boiling the kettle.
Food Drink plenty of hot drinks throughout the day. Make sure you have regular hot meals that include carbohydrates such as potatoes, rice, pasta and bread. Have porridge with hot milk for breakfast and soups and stews for lunch and dinner. Keep healthy by eating fruit and vegetables. If all this sounds rather depressing, remember that on average the UK only experiences a maximum five or six really cold days each year. While it’s difficult to face those freezing temperatures, it helps to know that our winter woes will quickly be forgotten as soon as the spring sunshine appears.

ADVERTISER FEATURE
Imagine Winchester With Fewer Local Businesses! The internet is getting smaller According to Google 61% of smartphone users search the internet every day on their mobiles and 57% search for local information at least once a week. What does this means for local businesses in Winchester? If you search for information about a local company on your smartphone already you probably know there are 3 types of website: • Ones that don’t work • Ones that look really tiny and make you have to zoom in to read them • Ones that resize themselves to fit nicely on your small screen. When you’re looking for answers quickly which one are you most likely to read?
Supporting local can be hard It’s all very well trying to support local business, but it gets harder when large companies have invested in making their websites so easy to use on a mobile. The irony here is that the big companies 24
Special report by Chris John
work better when they are smaller than small companies do. The frustrating fact is that it needn’t be this way, ANY local business can have a website that works well on mobiles and tablets for that matter.
It’s not rocket science it’s responsive design Responsive design is a way of creating websites so they respond and adapt to the screen size they are being viewed on. Sadly even with so many web designers and online tools to choose from, millions of websites still don’t do this. As a consumer this is painful; as a business owner it is disastrous. Online visitors don’t have the patience to pinch, scroll and flail about, and businesses lose a potential customer.
But that’s why they advertise in magazines Magazines are a great way to promote a local business. However, there is no escape from the smartphone, over 60% of the UK own one and 31% of them are prompted to make a search by a magazine advert at least once a month. Many people reading magazines
will be following up ads they are interested in by searching websites on their smartphones only to end up squinting at illegible text.
What can you do to help? Search for your favourite local business on your smartphone. If it doesn’t work or it looks tiny - next time you see them tell them. Explain that if you didn’t already know them you’d probably be put off by their website. We all want local business to succeed. They make a community come to life, they offer local employment and they offer goods and services on our doorsteps.
Where to get mobile ready local business websites If you own a local business or you want to point your favourite ones in the right direction, Winchester based Smart Little Web Co create fully responsive and mobile ready websites for local businesses. See their website www.smartLittleWeb.com or call 01962 600044.

And Another Thing... Christmas Shopping by Tom Hughes It was that time of year again, when the late autumnal chill turns to a sharper, wintery shiver. “Tom?” “Mmmm?” “What are you doing this Thursday? “I’m busy.” “Doing what.” “Er, I have to creosote the dog.” “Don’t be silly and stop hiding behind the paper. On Thursday we need to go … late night Christmas shopping.” “Listen, I hate Christmas, and I hate Christmas shopping. I’m like the condemned man shopping for rope. I’m a grown adult, I can make my own choices in life, so please find someone else, and that my dear, is my final, final word.” The Trafford Centre car park was heaving as we bumped the Mondeo up onto the pavement and joined the happy throngs. As soon as we entered, Sarah headed straight for the Christmas decorations. “Now Tom, do you think we need another Santa to stand in the corner of the front room?” I turned around and stared at the 28
rosy cheeks and glassy eyes of the little fat man with the white beard. I felt like punching him. But instead I just pulled at his realistic whiskers. “Er, do you mind?” “I’m most terribly sorry,” I immediately apologised as the chubby old chap backed away from me, his furious wife in tow. “Tom, what have I told you about not wearing your new glasses? Look, this is going to be a long night so let’s just get on with it.” “I’ll tell you what - let’s split up. You give me a list and we can finish in half the time.” Sarah’s eyes narrowed as she ripped her brown envelope in half. “Ok ... but don’t just go to Waterstones and browse for hours.” “As if.” The film section at Waterstones was bigger than I remembered, with huge glossy tomes full of scenes from my favourite films. One Spielberg book was as weighty as it was marvellous. But at forty quid I couldn’t justify the price. I looked over the book to see the whiskered old man whom I mistook for Santa
meekly shuffling along behind his wife. He looked over at me, our differences forgotten as I held up my list. A moment of male bonding amongst the manic dash for presents. Then, as I replaced the Spielberg book, he gave me a strange, conspiratorial wink. The next destination was the perfume counter in Debenhams. A scary looking woman with cartoon eyebrows blocked my path. “Paco Rabanne?” “No, Tom Hughes, but pleased to meet you.” I offered my hand. The sales lady tried to look annoyed, but her plastered face couldn’t quite manage it. “No sir, it’s a perfume ... pour l’homme.” The sensual pout took me aback - who was this raging fire of pure epicurean femininity? Fingering the exotic bottle of scent, I rummaged for my list Uncle Barry, aftershave. Perfect! “How much, madame? “£44.50 sir.” I was in Boots when Sarah rang. “Did you buy Barry’s aftershave?” “No.” “Why?”
“Because I haven’t time to remortgage the house. Have you seen the price of Paco Rabanne?” “The Hugo Boss is on offer.” “No chance.”
“Is that it?”
“Because he dressed the Nazis.” “Tom, I don’t think we have time to discuss the ethics of Christmas - just go and buy something, anything.” I trudged back to my Gallic friend and handed over thirty quid for a tiny silver bottle of what to me smelt of catnip. I met Sarah at a generic coffee emporium. Weighed down with bags, she flopped onto the bench as I brought her a restorative skinny latte. “You’ve been busy.” “Well, I just want to finish and go home. Where are your presents?”
“Right, make yourself useful. Carry these, time’s marching on, let’s go.” Now reduced to a mute pack mule, I followed Sarah dutifully around the stores, sulkily accepting bundle after bundle of sparkly loveliness. And, before I knew it, it was Christmas morning and time to open our presents. Sarah had told me what to buy her and when she
opened her box gave me a polite look of mock surprise. Then I opened my present - it was the Spielberg book.
“Well, I was distracted, the old man with the beard ....” Sarah, half standing, slurped her coffee.
“Why not?”
“Here.”
I held up my little aftershave bag.
“How did you know I wanted this?” “I just had a feeling.” The doorbell rang. It was Uncle Barry looking for his bottle of catnip. Everyone ran out to greet him. From the hall I heard a rousing “Merry Christmas!” Now alone, I glanced over at the corner of the room, where sat a chubby, red faced Santa. So Sarah had bought one after all? And do you know something? If I didn’t know better, and if I wasn’t on my third Bucks Fizz, I could have sworn he winked at me....

The Christmas Truce by Alison Runham
Christmas Eve 1914. The Western Front. Weeks of rain have ended and mud is becoming ice. Despite calls for a Christmas ceasefire, fighting has continued throughout December, although today it seems half-hearted in many places. Staff Sergeant Clement Barker is in his trench with his comrades. Across No Man’s Land, the Germans are decorating tiny trees sent from home with candles as they sing Stille Nacht (Silent Night). “The trenches were a blaze of Christmas trees,” one Tommy recalled, “and our sentries were regaled for hours with traditional Christmas songs.” In some places, English troops decide that they “ought to retaliate in some way.” “So we sang The First Noël... they all began clapping; and then they struck up another favourite of theirs, O Tannenbaum.” At Barker’s trench, a German soldier appears. “He said that if (we) did not fire, they wouldn’t in the morning,” Barker wrote later. Next morning, Barker’s men cautiously venture out to retrieve and bury their dead. 40
German soldiers of the 134th Saxon Regiment and British soldiers of the Royal Warwickshire Regiment meet in no man’s land, December 26
No shots are fired. Soon they’re shaking hands with the Germans and exchanging gifts, and then “a football is kicked out of our trenches, and Germans and English play football.” Henry Williamson, who later wrote Tarka the Otter, also recalled football matches, but behind German lines; if British and German troops played together, he made no mention of it. However, despite the myths surrounding Truce matches between both sides, some are well-documented in letters. Two soldiers of the 6th Cheshires described a huge, free-for-all match in Wulverghem, Belgium, where No Man’s Land was less damaged by shell fire. Williamson recalled the Germans singing Silent Night, too, before inviting the English closer. His unit suspected a trap. “We crept out... expecting any moment to fall flat with the machine guns opening up. And nothing happened.” Both sides were soon exchanging gifts and greetings, and similar scenes were occurring at many points along the Front. Cigarettes, rations, uniform buttons and even addresses were exchanged. One English trench received a German chocolate cake, together with a ceasefire request and an invitation to an impromptu concert. “Just think,” wrote one soldier to his family, “while you were eating turkey I
was talking and shaking hands with the very men I had been trying to kill a few hours before!” The truce at Williamson’s position held for four days before orders arrived to end fraternisation, while the Germans were warned to expect visits from senior officers; they sent a message across, explaining that they would have to fire their machine guns, but would fire high to avoid hitting anyone. For Barker, peace lasted a little longer too. “Night came and still no shots. Boxing day the same, and has remained so up to now,” he wrote a few days later. But gradually fighting resumed. Captain J.C. Dunn’s account of resuming hostilities is poignant: “I fired three shots in the air and put up a flag with “Merry Christmas” on it, and I climbed on the parapet...[the Germans] put up a sheet with “Thank you” on it, and the German Captain appeared... We both bowed and saluted... he fired two shots in the air, and the War was on again.” Both truces (and football games) had occurred in earlier wars. So what makes the 1914 Christmas Truce especially memorable? Perhaps because in a war that cost over 10 million lives, it was, as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle said, “one human episode amid all the atrocities.”
