My mother was born during wartime and for most of her life had a ‘make do and mend’ attitude. Recycling was second nature to her, not something she did to be green, and bargain hunting was practically a hobby, particularly in relation to Christmas. Every January she would buy up cut price Christmas cards and wrapping paper. Car boot sales were a great hunting ground for presents throughout the year and in autumn she’d buy gifts in the sales. I’m really not sure it worked though as by December she’d forgotten what she’d bought and where she’d hidden it and still seemed to be out shopping for even more. On Christmas morning itself, our unwrapping was supervised. We weren’t allowed to tear the paper and she’d take it from us and carefully fold it up to be used again next year. (Again though, she’d forget she’d done that by the following year and still buy anew.) I don’t buy many presents in advance though. Once my sister-in-law had her fifth child we diplomatically suggested not buying presents for each other’s children. And if I buy too early for my own – now teenagers – chances are they’ll have already bought something similar themselves or gone off that particular fad long before the big day. But there’s one economy measure that really does work: stay away from the internet. If you think about it, when you are in a shop, an overflowing basket or a long queue is enough to make you reconsider. Online however, you can browse, ‘add to basket’ and pay without leaving your armchair, meaning it’s too easy to impulse buy. (Yeah right, if I can effect that policy in my own life, I’ll be spending Christmas polishing my halo.) Your next issue will be in 2016 so an early Happy New Year from the Discover Magazines team!

“Don’t buy me anything. There’s nothing I need.” Isn’t that the most irritating thing anyone can say to you in the lead-up to Christmas? Especially after you’ve searched the shops for hours or pored over hundreds of websites, trying to think of a suitable present.

It’s the festive season, and not buying anything just isn’t an option, unless you want to feel like a cross between the Grinch and Ebenezer Scrooge on Christmas morning. The Chairman’s annual dinner dance is the highlight of our social calendar (the other important dates being Christmas and my Mum coming for Sunday tea) so what to wear is a stress known only to the fairer sex. I on the other hand have no such conundrum, needing only to dust down my penguin suit (although sometimes the previous twelve months over-indulgence can result in a fight to the death with the trousers).

I’m not going, you can go on your own.” Disaster loomed. I had to think quick. “Look, let’s see what Debi says.” Debi was Sarah’s best friend and my last hope. Hurriedly, I took some pictures.

James Morrison James Morrison came to fame in 2006 with the hit debut single ‘You Give Me Something’. After a year or two out of the limelight, he’s back with a new single and album. He talked to the Evening Breeze’s Lucy Ambache about fame, fitness and Frozen.

Where have you been? It has been ages!

<laughs> I think when I came out, it was still quite poppy with a little bit of soul in there. It’s just one of those things. I just did what felt right at the time.

I kind of just wanted some time away. I felt like I was losing my mind a bit. I’d been on tour and making albums constantly for nearly eight years so I just wanted some time off with my kid. She was getting big and I just thought I’d rather live with screwing my career up and having a few years out than being a rubbish dad. I thought that was only a mum thing! No I definitely felt it! I needed

What do you think of the current crop of Brits that are doing so well? Good. They’re good enough to make me feel nervous. It’s funny that the sound that you had when you established yourself is really “now”. You are almost ‘before your time’.

How has it changed from those days I guess it’s not so ‘sweet’? The single Demons is far from sweet! The video’s dark but the message behind the song is I think the opposite. It’s about owning your own demons and not letting them get the better of you. It was quite poignant for me because when I was writing the album, I was close to a point of letting all those things in my head take over - I’m rubbish, I shouldn’t do it, I’m not good enough - they nearly got the better of me. So that song sums up those months of writing. Your little girl and my little girl both love Frozen! <laughs> She’s over it now, fortunately. I’m so glad You mean there’s light at the end

of the tunnel? I was quite distraught over that period of time. I’ve watched the DVD about 50 times – the first time I watched it I loved it. The worst point was when nine of her friends were round our house having a Frozen party! I even went to a Frozen themed birthday party and I asked the girl there whether she was sick of singing the songs – and she said “this is the last day I’m doing this!”. So even the people doing it are sick of it! What’s in the future then? Getting ready to do gigs really. I’ve got a bit of rust – although I’m fitter than I’ve ever been. Before, I’d only run if somebody was chasing me! I can run 12 miles now, and box a little bit, and lift slightly heavy weights! Have you got into this celebrity macro-biotic diet thing as well? No. I could survive on super noodles but I think it makes a difference when you eat well. I’m not mad crazy but I was beginning to look bad for my age!

You know the type: Americans are loud, Germans disciplined, we Brits are stuffy. But, sorry Italy, when it comes to you and motorised road transport, the two of you should never have met. I love your food, your weather, your style, but boy am I scared of your driving! This year, our family holiday was spent on the Amalfi coast. The temperature never dipped below 34°C, the lemon trees groaned under the weight of their fruit and the Limoncello tasted divine. But whenever I ventured out of the hotel, I felt I was

taking my life in my hands. Our original plan was to hire a car in Naples, but a quick search strongly advised to the contrary. Confirmation that this was the right decision came within three minutes of being picked up at the airport. Scooters and cars observed no lane discipline, horns were used incessantly and the breaking of speed limits by large margins was commonplace. Every car boasted dents, scuffs and/or missing wing mirrors, I saw a Chevrolet Spark being driven around town even though it had been involved in a major front-end smash, and the buses appeared to have emerged from a war-torn country. Italy: home to Ferrari with its prancing horse, Lamborghini’s bull and Maserati’s Neptune’s trident badge - perhaps these logos are subtle nods that Italy should stick to four-legged road transport or put its faith in the Gods when it comes to moving around safely. Growing Fruit Trees by Pippa Greenwood www.pippagreenwood.com Who doesn’t enjoy sinking their teeth into a delicious, flavour-packed, superbly juicy apple or pear? Mmm! But if you want the ultimate in gorgeous apples, pears, plums or more, then the fruit needs to be freshly picked and sun-warmed - so grow your own and you can also save yourself a few bob, have fun and make some good looking additions to your garden, even when space is limited. There’s no need to have a massive plot or an orchard to grow fruit trees…

Pear Tree Trained Over Arch

You can grow fruit trees in surprisingly small spaces, especially if you don’t grow them in a classic tree shape, but train them. Training them into espaliers (so that they have several sets of horizontal ‘arms’), cordons (as single main stems grown at an angle) or fans (with branches trained into a fan shape) means that you can grow many varieties of apples and pears up against a suitable vertical surface such as a wall, fence or set of sturdy wires. You could also train fruits like apples as ‘step-overs’ - this just means trained so they make a neat edging for a bed or border, about 45cm or so above ground level. A step-over apple basically goes up to a height of about 30cm and is then trained so that it forms two horizontal ‘arms’. They look great when in flower and will even bear a smallish crop of fruit along the arms. Try stepovers around the edge of your vegetable plot or flower bed. Alternatively, why not make a real feature of fruit and use a tree to create a decorative and, later on, a productive arch? Buy an inexpensive bare-root cordon (straight stem) or a ‘whip’ fruit

tree of your favourite variety, pair it with another variety that is a suitable pollinator (check with the nursery) and plant one on each side of the arch, training them in as they grow. It will look great, phenomenally pretty when covered in blossom in spring, and after a few years will bear tasty fruit too. But what if you don’t have any open ground, beds or borders in your backyard style garden? Provided you get the right rootstock (see below) it is quite possible to grow fruit trees in large containers. The container needs to be as big as possible - a half-barrel at least - and must have drainage holes kept clear using a few inches of broken china or ‘crocks’ at its bottom. Good quality loam-based compost such as John Innes No.3 will work well, but help to keep it well aerated and free-draining by adding 25-50% multi-purpose loam-free compost. Whatever the size of your garden, but especially if space is short, when you are choosing fruit trees it is essential to get them on the right ‘rootstock’, as this determines the ultimate size and vigour of the tree. The rootstock

is the type of roots onto which the chosen variety of apple has been grafted. Apples are particularly complicated and a good nursery will advise you, but as a rule, for step-overs, cordons, dwarf bushes and trees in containers try the extremely dwarfing but somewhat tricky M27 - but do beware weak varieties or any tree grown on this rootstock in poor soil or not well pampered may well fail. For bush, cordon, espaliers and halfstandard try the easier to look after dwarfing rootstock M26, while for a cordon, an espalier on poor soil, arches and bush trees

try the semi-dwarfing MM106. You can either buy one year old ‘maidens’ or ‘whips’ which are small, fairly straight stems and train them yourself, or if you want to save time you can often buy trained or part-trained fruit trees. Obviously you’ll pay more for a trained tree, but it can save you several years work! Make sure you choose the varieties you grow so that they are in flower at the same time and thus can pollinate each other - if there is no suitable pollinator in the vicinity you will not get

fruit. Check with your supplier who will be able to tell you which ‘pollination group’ each variety is in. At this time of year you can buy fruit trees which are really good value because they are sold ‘bare root’, this just means lifted from a field and not container grown. These are not only inexpensive, but also establish particularly well. Bare root fruit trees are generally available from about November until early March, depending on the weather - so don’t delay, get ordering or planting today!

Hailing A National Business Bus in Winchester Small Business Saturday on the 5th December is a campaign to highlight local business success. Its aim is to encourage consumers to ‘shop local’ and in support of this the Small Business Saturday bus is touring the country during November. Winchester High Street will be hosting the bus tour which stops off in the city on Tuesday 24 November from 10am to 2pm, and is open to all local small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to hear from local experts in business skills. Winchester City Council along with Hampshire Chamber of Commerce and Winchester Business Improvement District (BID), have arranged for local industry experts to be on hand. They will be giving a series of

short ‘hot topic’ talks ranging from workplace pensions to effective website copy, and business rates relief to setting up a green enterprise. Local entrepreneurs are invited to take part in as many sessions as they choose, all for free, and can register for more information as the bus tour approaches. Stollen This spiced and fruity Continental sweet bread is perfect for serving over the festive season with a glass of warm mulled wine.

Ingredients:

Put the butter, milk and caster sugar in a small pan and heat gently until the sugar has dissolved and the butter has melted. Leave to cool for 10 minutes.

Sift the flour, salt and mixed spice into a large bowl and stir in the dried yeast. Make a well in the centre and stir in the milk mixture, lemon zest and egg. Mix together with a round-bladed knife to form a soft and sticky dough.

Turn the dough onto a well floured surface and knead for 5-8 minutes until smooth and elastic. At first the dough will be quite sticky so add more flour as necessary.

Flatten out the dough and knead in the raisins, cherries and peel until just combined. Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with cling film and leave in a warm place for about 1� hours, or until doubled in size.

Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for 1-2 minutes, then roll out to a 25cm square. Shape the marzipan into a sausage shape and place down the centre of the dough. Fold one side over to cover the marzipan then repeat with the other side, overlapping in the centre. Seal the ends. Place seam-side down on a greased baking sheet. Cover with oiled cling film and leave in a warm place until doubled in size. Preheat the oven to 190°C, fan 170°C, gas 5.

Bake the stollen for 35-45 minutes until golden and sounds hollow when tapped underneath. Brush the hot stollen all over with melted butter and roll in the icing sugar to coat. Leave to cool.
