The Age of NOW! My daughter is 22 years old but when she was about three she asked for juice. Picking her up on her manners I said, “Juice, what?” She brazenly replied, “Juice…NOW!” Although it’s still a family joke, these days we do live in an “instant” world where information is at our fingertips and we’ve lost the skill of patience. Many of our advertisers are small businesses, often without a receptionist or anyone to take calls while they are working or with customers. It’s a juggle for them to answer calls on the go and if they do, background noise and struggling for a working pen makes them look unprofessional. On hearing an answering machine, many of you will simply put the phone down and dial another rather than leave a message and wait for a call back. This local magazine is only made financially possible by the investment from our advertisers and we want to help them and you, our readers, to get the most from Discover. “At Your Service” is a telephone answering service readers can use to contact any of our many advertisers; all with one call. Details are on page 55 so please feel free to give it a try. And if you don’t see a business advertising in these pages but trust the team at Discover enough to let us suggest a local business, just ask.

INTERVIEW

Travis

Fran Healy and Andy Dunlop are one half of Travis. They spoke to Lucy Ambache on The Evening Breeze and talked comebacks, making movies and why they might be responsible for Coldplay. Where have you been? What’s been going on? Fran: In the last six weeks I’ve been in Mexico City, Texas, Paris, Tokyo, Berlin, London, Glasgow, Milan and now here. We’re just running around telling everyone we’ve got a record out! We hadn’t been played for a long time on the radio and I think that’s because we’d gone off to be dads. We were putting records out but we weren’t putting the ‘foot down’. Now the kids are 8,9, 10 years old we can really concentrate on getting out there. You scheduled dad time? Blokes do that? Fran: Before you have kids, people tell you that you’ll never get that time back with your kids and if you’re in a band, it’s not a normal job - you’re away for six months or so. So I think for us we were ‘nah, let’s be at home’ and we were lucky enough to be pretty successful 14

so we could buy that time with our kids. A lot of (other) people buy gold racing cars and ridiculous, stupid things but I think it was money well spent. You’re credited for paving the way for the likes of Coldplay and Keane. That’s pretty amazing? Andy: We invented Coldplay in a room. Fran: We constructed them out of foam and bits of wires – and gave them our cast-off songs <laughs>. We were around at the end of the nineties, and we made the ‘Man Who’ album which was pretty incongruous with what was going around at the time and it was very successful – and I think when something like that happens, the record industry goes ‘let’s sign a bunch of this’ so for the next four years that was pretty much what you got. It wasn’t our intention but that’s what happens. A song like ‘Why Does It Always Rain On Me’. Do you still love it?

The simpler the song, the better - so I love it. Your new single ‘Magnificent Time’ is so ‘your sound’. Fran: Interesting story about that track is that it is a co-write between me and Tim from Keane. He sent me a text and said he’d written a song that sounded like him doing a bad impersonation of Travis! You’re on tour throughout May. You’re looking forward to that? Andy: Yeah. We’ve done one proper full show in Japan, and we had eight songs in the set and they sat brilliantly with all the old songs. It’s going to be an exciting show I think Fran: The thing is because we’ve done the album and the movie, we’ve done the visuals so they look great so we were like “we have to bring the live show up to that level as well”. So for the first time ever it’s a ’show’ show!

Andy: We get to play it every night and people still go mad to it so it’s still our touching point. Fran: I like that song because it’s really easy to play – it’s super simple! When you’re playing songs in a gig, the more complicated chord structures and rhythms, and then you have to think about lyrics, they get in the way of enjoying the show.

Work Starts On Eastleigh’s New State Of The Art Leisure Centre The new Fleming Park Leisure Centre (FPLC) is being developed by Eastleigh Borough Council, next to the current centre on Passfield Avenue, which remains open throughout the construction and will not close until the new centre is available for use. The Borough’s Mayor, Councillor Jane Welsh, was joined by representatives of partners in the scheme to turn the first sod on the development. The £25 million, state-of-the-art facility underpins the council’s commitment to promoting a healthy borough. It provides a quality design in keeping with the parkland

environment and has high environmental standards. The new building will boast facilities that are larger than at present, including a 15-badminton court sports hall and gym, and `wet facilities’ that encompass an eight-lane, 25-metre swimming pool (an increase from six lanes), a larger and more versatile learner pool, with a floor depth that can be altered depending on use, and a changing village. However, careful design means that it will occupy a similar footprint to the current centre with no net loss of green space. Other indoor facilities include three multipurpose studios and a group spinning studio. The new centre will also be familyfriendly, with a crèche and a large soft play area incorporating party rooms. Outside, the full-size, all-weather pitch and five-a-side pitches will be retained and refurbished and four new tennis courts will be opened. There will be free parking for more than 550 cars, together with a large number of cycle spaces. The council’s HealthWorks base, which promotes health and wellbeing, will be on the ground floor, close to reception for easy access. Updates on the new Fleming Park Leisure Centre development can be found at: www.eastleigh.gov.uk/flemingpark.

BEAUTY

Akamuti’s Sweet Orange Facial Cleanse

A Touch Of Indulgence

Work and family demands can make it pretty difficult to find time to treat ourselves. Thankfully, our top picks this month make indulgence easy.

Odylique’s Rose Velvet Body Lotion 18

I have very dry skin, so tend to use rich body butters. But sometimes I like something a bit lighter, that doesn’t take half an hour to sink in. Odylique’s Rose Velvet Body Lotion, £29, has proven a godsend. It’s a powerhouse of botanical ingredients, including aloe, avocado, cocoa bean, coconut and rose petals, smells gorgeous and absorbs quickly. My skin just drinks it up, and feels much softer and more hydrated for the rest of the day. Plus, as it’s 100% natural (93% organic), it’s gentle enough to use on even my daughter’s sensitive skin. Continuing on with the rose theme, another of my beauty essentials at the moment is Mixtress’s It’s All Roses Toner, £10.95. I find most toners too drying for my skin, but this one is really hydrating. The main ingredient is rose water, from petals that have been steamed to extract the oil and juice. Unsurprisingly, it smells beautiful and is perfect for freshening up on a hot day. I like to keep it to hand to spritz if my skin feels

dried out by central heating or air-conditioning. It’s great at removing any last traces of makeup, and leaves skin feeling wonderfully soft.

Mixtress’s It’s All Roses Toner

I try a lot of cleansers as a beauty writer, but Akamuti’s Sweet Orange Facial Cleanser, £7, is one of my all-time favourites. The sweet orange oil works as a natural exfoliator, to wipe away dead skin cells and leave me with softer, ‘glowier’ skin. Other natural oils, including sweet

almond and olive oil, ‘feed’ my skin and leave it softer and plumper. It’s effective at removing makeup (including mascara), but gentle enough for even my sensitive skin. Plus, a little goes a long way, so it’s superb value for money. A new lipstick always feels like a real indulgence. More so than a mascara or pretty much any other cosmetic product. A pop of colour and I’m set for whatever lies ahead that day. Joli Rouge Clarins’ new Brilliant Lipsticks Joli Rouge Brilliant Lipsticks, £19.50,

are a real treat. Formulated with organic marsh samphire extract and mango oil, they’re very hydrating, so leave lips feeling utterly pampered. With a choice of 12 colours, there’s one to suit any skin tone. Guava gets my vote for daytime wear, though coral tulip comes a very close second. I’m a bit lazy when it comes to skincare, so I do love a product that makes it easier. Plantscription Powerful Lifting Overnight Mask, £52, by Origins does just that. As implied by the name, you massage it into your skin before bed, then forget about it. It absorbs into your skin, so you don’t need to faff around with cotton wool pads or a muslin cloth to remove it.

Plantscription Powerful Lifting Overnight Mask

Natural ingredients sourced from around the globe include Indian Commiphora, a tree resin that works to stimulate skin’s own antiageing Hyaluronic Acid. HOBBIES

Why You’ll Be Bowled Over By This Popular Game By Kate McLelland]

A team of uniformed players lined up to bowl on a perfectly manicured green is one of the most evocative sights of the summer. Lawn Bowls is a gentlypaced team game that – like cricket matches on the village green – seems to reflect a British way of life that has barely changed in hundreds of years.

Never played bowls before? Enjoy a free taster session with a qualified coach at the Banister Park Bowling Club Banister Park Bowling Club Stoneham Lane, Eastleigh Hampshire SO50 9HT 02380 643406 banistersecretary@gmail.com banisterparkbowlingclub.com 26

Bowling is popular for two main reasons: it’s a highly social game, offering a strong sense of camaraderie within the club itself and the potential to develop wider networks through inter-club matches. It is also accessible to new members, being one of the easiest team sports to pick up (although regulars will tell you it takes time and skill to perfect the techniques required).

older generation. That view has recently been challenged by an upsurge of interest in Barefoot Bowls, a relatively new Australian variant of the game that has attracted more young people to play. Barefoot Bowls uses four players per team with a game length of between 30-60 minutes, although the main objective – to get your bowls as close to the jack as possible – remains the same.

Lawn Bowls is played in singles, pairs, triples and four player teams. Players use weighted bowls known as ‘woods’ that are heavier on one side, giving them a bias. The bowls are rolled along a flat grass bowling green towards a smaller ball, or jack, with points scored for the woods that stop closest to the jack. The team captain (or ‘skipper’) always plays last and takes responsibility for directing the team’s shots and tactics.

Another more traditional variant of Lawn Bowls is Crown Green Bowls, which adds an additional level of challenge as it is played on an uneven surface. In France the game of Pétanque is played on a hard dirt or gravel surface, either in public parks or dedicated areas called boulodromes. Hollow metal balls are bowled towards a ‘cochonnet’ (which translates as ‘piglet’), which is the Gallic version of the English jack. Pétanque is surprisingly popular in the UK too, and the English Pétanque Association website (www.englishpetanque.org.uk) lists 16 regions where the sport is played.

Despite its status as one of Great Britain’s most popular sports, up to now Lawn Bowls has had the reputation of being more suitable for the

There are thousands of bowling clubs across the UK where you can pick up the basics and eventually go on to play in leagues if you want to take part at a more serious level. The game can be enjoyed at any age (provided you are reasonably mobile) and you can play all year round, as the sport goes indoors in the winter. The British Isles Indoor Bowls Council (www. biibc.org.uk) can provide information on indoor clubs while the sports section of the BBC website (www.bbc.co.uk) provides contact information on the various Lawn Bowling associations for England, Scotland and Wales, each with a search facility to help you find your local club. No one is said to be more than 15 miles away from their nearest bowling ground, so next time you come across the classic scene of players assembled on a green, don’t just walk on by: find out how you can become involved in one of the UK’s best loved sports.

The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service the Eastleigh area

What is a Dental Implant? a dental implant is an artificial replacement for a tooth root, usually made from titanium. there are many different implant systems available and when competently used they all deliver a highly reliable form of treatment. the main aim during the placement of any implant is to achieve immediate close contact with the surrounding bone. over time further growth of bone onto the implant surface enhances the stability of the implant. Frequently AskeD questIons Will I be able to eat what I like afterwards? Once completed, patients should be able to eat a normal, healthy diet with little or no difficulty. What Costs are involved in implant treatment? The cost can vary, depending on the degree and extent of treatment required. The full cost is therefore explained and confirmed in a written treatment plan from your implant dentist.

How long will it take? Implant treatment usually requires a number of appointments over a period of months. In some cases, however, implant work can be completed in a much shorter period. How long will it last? Once treatment s completed a regular routine of dental hygiene and regular check-ups should ensure that implants last for many years. Am I too old for implant treatment? There is no upper age limit for patients to undergo implant treatment, provided they continue to enjoy reasonably good health. Is the treatment painful? Patients are often surprised at how little discomfort they experience during and after implant procedures.

Bundle hanging chair, £395, Idyll Home, 01270 812717; www.idyllhome.co.uk.

Today’s gardens are more like an outdoor room, used for playing, cooking, socialising and resting; they are multifunctional spaces that look good but also work hard for every member of the family.

for a hammock or a deck chair – perhaps near some scented flowers or under a tree for shade. And the dining area is best closest to the house, with space nearby for a barbecue or even an outdoor kitchen.

If your garden is in need of an update, the secret is in the planning - how will you use the space and what do you want from it? Sketch a plan of your garden on graph paper, and gather samples of the materials you intend to use – such as slate, willow or terracotta – to ensure that they co-ordinate. If in doubt, consider consulting a professional, who will undoubtedly come up with practical solutions and inspirational ideas you would never have thought of.

Consider changes in levels – they add interest and are easier to deal with than slopes, but avoid lots of steps between the door and the dining table. Flooring is key, too - will you choose stone slabs, gravel, bricks, decking, wood chips or perhaps tiles that complement your kitchen flooring for an inside-outside look? Just like indoors, your choice of garden flooring can signal a change from one area to another. It is also a question of practicality and cost: specify stone slabs for the dining area, for example, and save money with woodchips in the children’s play area.

In a large garden, the ideal layout includes separate areas for dining, relaxing and playing – perhaps with a ‘secret’ children’s area at the far end, including structures such as a swing, trampoline, climbing frame or tepee. A peaceful area away from both the house and the kids is ideal 38

Verticals are just as important, providing privacy, screening and dividing, adding visual interest and offering places for climbers to grow. Think about fences, hedges, walls, arches, arbours

and pergolas – a simple metal archway over a path entwined with fragrant honeysuckle makes a lovely focal point, while a small wooden pergola can link two different areas of the garden and offer a shady spot to sit in. Finally, furniture. Consider waterproof upholstery, outdoor sofas and all-weather rattan, choosing designs and colourways that link with the whole space. You can even accessorise outdoor sofas with scatter cushions and interior throws or blankets for when it gets chilly. If space is restricted, opt for folding furniture and play equipment that can be put away, or build seating into your hard landscaping – an extra-wide low wall makes a great bench seat and you can even build in hinged storage for cushions. The time is right to start planning your stunning summer garden, and creating more useable space outdoors is far more economical than a new basement or roof conversion – in fact, turning outdoor space into an extra outdoor room may add value to your property.

TECHNOLOGY

Phone Home Philips Hue smart bulbs

Are you ready to control everything in your house with a smartphone app? In the 1930s, magazines predicted a really exciting thing called the smart home - a home where everything was automated and easy to control. It’s taken its time to turn up, but smart home technology is finally here. From your boiler to your light bulbs, there’s an app for almost everything.

such as Google’s Nest and British Gas’s Hive, that can automate your heating and even turn the heater up and down when you’re away from home. There are smart bulbs, such as Philips’ Hue, that can completely change the colour of your room with a single tap of your phone’s screen. There are smart baby monitors such as BabyPing that stream video of your (hopefully!) sleeping child to your phone, and there is a whole selection of smart cameras that you can use to monitor your house.

Most smart home technology is designed to connect to your Wi-Fi network, either directly or via a little box called a hub. Once it’s connected you can then control it from your phone. There are smart thermostats,

And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Both Apple and Google have bet on home automation as one of the next big things, so they’re encouraging firms to make even more smart devices although inevitably, Apple

and Google’s systems aren’t compatible with one another so you need to pick sides. That’ll change in the longer term, because it’s in nobody’s interest to have rival, incompatible systems for such basics as light switches and heating controls, but at the moment it’s really important to check compatibility - so for example if you want to control smart home technology via an Apple iPhone or Apple Watch, you should look for devices that support Apple’s HomeKit. If you don’t, you could end up in a situation where you need a different app for each smart home product you buy, which is hardly making things simple. If you’re wondering what’s so smart about smart home technology, the answer is that by connecting different things together you can make interesting things happen. For example, Philips’ Hue bulbs work with Apple’s Siri voice recognition, so you can say “Hey Siri! Set scene to movie!” and the lights will change. Nest learns your habits to work out the best

times and temperatures for heating your home, and can talk to your phone, see that you’re heading home from work and make sure the house is nice and toasty for your arrival. Sky’s latest Sky Q system can send video including your recordings - from your Sky box to any other room in the house, or to your phone or tablet when you’re far from home.

There’s a catch, of course. Because this is all brand new technology, it’s quite expensive - so if you fancy a Bluetooth-enabled DeLonghi coffee machine that you can command from the sofa, it’ll cost £1,500. Even relatively simple devices can be expensive, so for example smart plugs for remotely turning things on and off cost around £40, while a starter

Sky Q system

AQUATEC

DeLonghi PrimaDonna Elite Wi-Fi coffee machine

kit of three Philips Hue bulbs and a hub will set you back £149. Upgrading from Sky+HD to Sky Q costs from £99 to £249 and then comes in at £56 per month. As ever, being first on the block with new technology doesn’t come cheap - so maybe the really smart homes will wait until the technology gets cheaper before taking the plunge.
