Sean Hughes – Mumbo Jumbo Multi award winning comedian Sean Hughes is back with a new show called Mumbo Jumbo. Throughout his life he has been battling to stay on the right side of sanity. This is because in middle age he has realised that the two sides of his brain are in constant conflict. There is common sense against mumbo jumbo and mumbo jumbo seems to have the upper hand. The show consists of stories including being serenaded at the break of dawn by Robert Smith, trekking mountain gorillas in Rwanda and coming to the conclusion that he will never have a proper conversation with his dear mum. I don’t know about you but when I come back from a few weeks holiday I see things with a fresh pair of eyes; things that I had previously not noticed (or tried to ignore!). I often rearrange the furniture in a room, move picture frames that have been positioned quite happily on a shelf for years or weed out my every increasing wardrobe (I’m a bit of charity shop addict) . The same applied to getting back to work on Discover Magazines; I purge the filing trays and start on improvements I’ve thought of while supposedly resting! The biggest change though, is a reshuffle of areas we deliver to in order to create a new edition, Discover Eastleigh. What has been the best gig for you over the past ten years since your debut single came out? We’ve had some special ones. In Southampton we had some great early times at Lennons right through to the shows at the Guildhall. What has been your favourite venue or festival to play at and why? Brixton Academy in London holds a lot of meaning to us, having grown up watching bands there, and it still stands up as the best place for a show even having been round the world. Where do you retreat to when song writing? We’ve got a studio in Elephant where we do everything, write, record etc What is your favourite lyric you’ve written and sung to date? Probably not for us to decide Whose music do you listen to most on tour? I’ve got into a habit of listening to the Beta Band a lot. I just got into Dead Can Dance on the last tour too. Who would be your ideal band or artist to tour with? We’ve played or toured with a lot of them. We’ve talked with Foals about doing something together sometime this year which would be fun.

If you could have dinner with any singer dead or alive who would it be and why? Too many. But Joe Strummer probably. Any interesting musical collaborations in the pipeline? Just touring the record at the moment .... What are your hopes for next year professionally? I think this album is going to carry us to a few moments, just not sure exactly what they’ll be yet! Hoping there will be some special shows. Tell us what you will be releasing next and what we can look forward to from The Maccabees? The album is just out so we are into the idea of celebrating that at the moment and looking forward to the November Guildhall show. Beautiful place.

The Pavilion on the Park is a community centre serving the Eastleigh community by offering affordable facility hire and delivering a variety of activities for the community. Sadly, it’s no real secret in this industry that folk are being cheated as a result of the lure of cheap / half price MOTS. There are many promotions out there offering huge discounts and half price MOTS but often it’s just a cheap trick to get you in the door and more often than not a cheap MOT turns out to be very expensive! Shades of Autumn By Kate Duggan

This issue we’re looking at make-up, including the key trends for autumn/winter. As your tan fades, you may find that you want slightly more foundation. ’Contouring’ is the art of using different shades to add definition to your face. Lighter tones highlight areas and make them stand out slightly, while darker tones add shadow and depth. If you’ve been thinking of trying contouring, but are worried that it will take hours, or make you look a bit fake, read on for our cheat’s guide…

Cheek Colore, £28, is a good choice. Available in five shades, including a natural looking coral, it’s easy to apply, blends well and lasts for ages. Colorescience is available from www.beautyproduct-online.co.uk

Start with an overall base that’s the same tone as your natural skin, before adding slightly darker shades under your cheekbones and along your jawline. Use a lighter shade on top of the cheekbones, under the eyes and between your eyebrows. And don’t forget to blend well! If you’re still not convinced, try searching online for video tutorials. MAC has some great ones on its website, for example. When it comes to the product itself, a cream tends to give a fresher appearance. Iconic London’s Multi Use Cream Contour Palette, £32.99, is a good choice, as it has several easy-toapply shades in one kit, which also double-up as eyeshadows. If you don’t fancy contouring, but do want to add a touch of colour to your cheeks, Colorescience Pressed Mineral

Statement lips don’t have to be red. We love Bobbi Brown’s new Lip Trio in Twilight Glow, £39 – the perfect shade for autumn. One of the key looks for this season is ‘polished’. Think sophisticated, ‘grownup’ make-up. The Lip Trio is perfect for this, as it gives you perfectly defined lips, with just a hint of gloss.

Victoriana looks set to become another one of this season’s key looks. Forget soft romantic frills though; this is Victoriana with an edge. Think dark, gothic eroticism. If you don’t fancy going the whole shebang, you can dip your toe (or fingertip) in the water with a dark red or purple nail varnish. We like Vamp by HJ Manicure, which is £9.50 and doesn’t contain the strong chemicals often found in nail polishes, such as formaldehyde and dibutyl phthalate.

Want to master the perfect autumnal smokey eye? Neal’s Yard Remedies tells us how*: Apply a tawny brown shadow over the entire eyelid and up into the socket line using a medium eyeshadow brush. Apply to the lower lash line with a small eyeshadow brush. Using a medium brush, apply a dark hazelnut shade to the outer corner of the lid and blend into the crease of the socket line. Blend the colours using soft back and forth strokes. Apply dark brown mascara. Press a dark chocolate eyeliner into the eyelash roots, moving along the upper lash line. Go over this with a precise line, staying close to the lashes. Fleming Park Development The proposed new Fleming Park Leisure Centre moved a step closer with the Council formally selecting a preferred construction partner for the exciting new development. The Council has selected Interserve, the international support service and construction group, as its preferred construction partner and has issued notice of its intention to enter into the second stage of tendering with them to work up

detailed plans, timescales and costings over the next few months. The new modern facility will include a larger main pool, (six lanes to eight), a larger learner pool, expanded and improved gym facilities, improved café/restaurant and will maintain free car parking. The new building will have a similar ‘footprint’ to the current leisure complex, but the new design makes much more efficient use of space - resulting in bigger and better facilities than before. The project will build the new centre alongside the current building which will continue to

operate during the construction period with customers able to continue to use the centre in the normal way. It is planned to take a report to Cabinet in December to award the construction contract with work on the new centre planned to start early in 2016.

Most Estate Agents list houses for sale or let at just under Rightmove or Zoopla’s search bands. For example, if somebody is looking for a house between £190,000 – 200,000, many agents list their houses at £199,950.

They think that the £50 reduction will be more tempting. But here’s the problem. The property portals default listing is to show in price order, with the highest price first. The smart agent who realises this will have listed their house to align with the Rightmove’s search bands. In this example, £200,000. So their client’s property will be at or near the top of the search.

Listing at just under a price band, means your property will show up in one search result. But this clever tip gets even better. If you list exactly on a band, for example at £200,000, it will show up for people looking between £190,000 - £200,000 AND those looking between £200,000 - £210,000. So twice as many people will see the property, helping it to sell for the best price.

Leaf Litter By Pippa Greenwood

Are you surrounded, engulfed and swamped with huge quantities of fallen leaves? Whether they come from trees in your own garden or from a neighbour, the deluge of leaves that falls in autumn is often enough to get level headed, treeloving gardeners eyeing up chainsaws!

At this time of year most of us are feeling as if we are being buried alive by falling leaves. Yes, the vast majority of leaves that are dropping from our own and our neighbours’ trees are pretty enough, and for a while their bright reds, yellows and oranges look stunning both on and off the tree. The problem is that it seems as if there is a virtually endless supply of them and after that initial flurry of pretty colour, the positive feeling soon starts to diminish. Leaves that are allowed to build up in your garden can cause problems - on the lawn they smother the turf grasses, often causing patches of die back, largely due to lack of light and oxygen. If the crowns of the less tough herbaceous perennials or alpines are covered in a soggy blanket of leaves, they too start to deteriorate. So, like it or not, you need to do something - and the sooner you get started the better! A spring-tined rake is perfect for raking leaves off the lawn, and can even work quite well on a gravel drive (provided you don’t rake too deeply and end up ploughing up the stones too!). If you have a lot of lawn or a lot of leaves (or worse still, a big lawn and lots of leaves too) then the

easiest way to deal with them is to mow the lawn. Provided you keep the hopper or grasscollector on the mower, when you empty it out you’ll have a fantastic mix of grass clippings and chopped leaves. On beds and borders you’ll usually end up hand picking, or if time and energy is in short supply you could invest in a leaf vacuum or a leaf blower (and this can, of course, be used on most drives and paths, and lawns too). Great, so you spend a lot of time and effort collecting up all these leaves. Then what? Don’t take them to the tip or make a bonfire: make leaf mould. It is as easy as anything and makes a fantastic soil mulch or conditioner…for free! Leaves are best rotted down on their own (they take longer to decompose than the rest of the stuff in your compost heap and need less air and warmth), so make yourself a simple and inexpensive leaf mould bin. Just drive four stakes into the ground to make the corners of a square, and then attach chicken mesh around the outside to make a cage. Stack the leaves in, tread or firm them, add some water if they are dry, then more water if the weather remains dry…

and then leave them be. If you can chop larger or tougher leaves (like horse chestnut) up first, they’ll rot down much faster - either mow them with the lawnmower or ‘chop’ them with a sharp spade. It is worth avoiding very spiky leaves (the spines seem to withstand rotting and get you later!), and any that are very leathery and tough - mainly evergreens such as holly, laurel and camellia, or those from sycamore and plane. If you want to speed the process up you can add a leaf mould

activator, which is available from garden centres. If space, time or money is short then you can also make leaf mould in a bin liner or other bag. Choose a good quality bin liner - not a really thin one - and cram it full of leaves, again adding water and/or activator if you wish. Then stab a few holes in the bag with a garden fork, loosely fold over the top and weigh it down with a brick. Bin liners full of leaves can be hidden anywhere that you have the space - perhaps behind the

shed, garage or greenhouse. If you don’t like the idea of black plastic, then there are now some lovely jute mesh bags which can be crammed full of leaves and act as a perfect container whilst the leaf mould is forming, but will eventually rot down and add to the useful material you produce. A few simple measures to update your property can make an enormous difference.

Step One - Get to know your home Knowing what your home is made from, how was it originally built, and what changes have been made will make it easier to work out how you can ecoimprove it. Step Two What are its weak points? Obvious problems are rattling, draughty windows, gaps around the edges of the front door and heat escaping through the roof. To help target improvements where they are most needed, commission a professional test for air tightness and heat loss. Best done on a cold, clear winter’s night, it is non-invasive and should cost around £300. Step Three - The loft A top priority for ecoimprovement, with 300mm of quilt insulation recommended, though there should be some ventilation in the loft to avoid condensation. There is a range of insulation materials, but natural materials, such as sheep’s wool or hemp, tend to be better for older properties, as they absorb water vapour and release it. Check your 38

Step Four - Windows Windows can leak a lot of heat, especially if they are old and single glazed, and short of double glazing, draught proofing is the answer. For a longerterm solution you will need to cut in a rebate and fit either compression seals (hinged windows) or wipers (sashes). Alternatively, secondary glazing will dramatically improve both air tightness and heat loss, and there are clear panels that fix to the window frame with a magnetic strip. If you can get below the boards or are planning to lift them, consider adding insulation underneath. Step Seven - Walls It is usually straightforward to insulate modern cavity walls but older, solid walls are more of a problem. Modern systems may trap moisture and cause damp, but one option is to add timber panelling inside, leaving an air gap behind. It may also be possible to add external or internal insulation, but be sure to get impartial advice.

QUICK TIPS • Installing shutters can reduce heat loss by 60%. For efficiency, they should meet with a rebated edge and include a brush strip or rubber seal. • A thick rug helps to reduce draughts through gaps in floorboards. • Adding a pelmet to a window treatment helps to reduce draughts and stop warm air disappearing behind your curtains or blind. • Place radiators on internal walls rather than below windows, where their heat can disappear more easily.

Eastleigh BID (Business Improvement District) is a notfor-profit organisation aimed at working with local businesses and residents to improve the activities and events happening in Eastleigh town centre. Currently Eastleigh BID have been working with the shops in the town to introduce a new parking initiative. Simply spend £25 or more in one transaction in a shop in Eastleigh (excluding grocery shops and food outlets) and receive a voucher issuing you £2.60 of your car parking back. Bring your voucher, along with your shopping receipt, to the Eastleigh BID offices, Wells Place, (next to McDonalds)

Don’t forget, you can still park ‘Free after 3’ along either Market Street or High Street on weekdays for an hour after 3pm. The offer is valid weekdays only. But remember visitors are still required to display a parking ticket from the machine to register what time they’ve parked.
