Hello Residents A Reluctant Happy Camper I’ve never seen the attraction of sleeping under canvas, lining up to wash the dishes; grass, mud or sand getting into everything. However, after years of badgering by my outdoor enthusiast “Bear Grylls” of a husband (I wish …), I impulsively agreed to adopt a 30 year old VW campervan named Jessie from friends. If you are umming and ahhing about going out of your comfort zone, follow Nike’s advice Just Do It. As recent empty nesters, we’ve had such fun exploring the beautiful Hampshire countryside, we survived our first music Festival and recently avoided expensive taxi fares by car park camping. Talking of comfort zones, I need to either improve the bedding situation or go to the Spire’s forthcoming talk on hip pain – ouch! (see p3) I certainly feel my age the morning after. Talking of old age; our finance article this month focuses on what benefits are available to pensioners (page 16) and pop veteran Jimmy Osmond talks about guest presenting on The Breeze (page 12) proving that youthful thinking really is a matter of mind over body. I’ll remember that when I’m packing up Jessie for another adventure!

Eating & Drinking
BON APPÉTIT!
By Cecile
I’m in love. With good food and good wine … or gin, or beer, or … you get my point. My name is Cécile and I run the Hampshire Wine School, with venues in Winchester, Southampton and Poole, sharing my passion in a really fun way with like-minded people. As a French sommelier and wine tutor, my aim in life is to discover the latest trends in beverage, to experiment with food, to find out what makes my tastebuds salivate. I want to know what’s good, what’s great and what’s not worth swallowing (well, I do spit for a living after all). Welcome to my new food & beverage gossip page. I LOVE MONDAYS. Unusual, I know. But it happens to be my day off. And if like me, you happen to work weird shifts and treat breakfast as your main meal of the day and as a social event with your friends, then GREAT NEWS … My favourite breakfast place – the Corner House (71 North Walls, Winchester) - is now opening up on Mondays. Hoorah! Why do I like this cosy eatery so much? Because it’s “loyal, lovely, local”, like both its customers and food suppliers. You will therefore see me sat there on Monday mornings from now on, probably in front of a plate of yummy Eggs Alresford (you got it … with local watercress! Lol) and a mug of freshly brewed Moonroast Coffee. So don’t be shy, come and say hi! Whilst breakfast might be high on my agenda, afternoon tea is actually what I dream about having every single day. Especially, when you spend that hour at shabby chic Bayleaves Larder (8791 Hiltingbury Road, Chandler’s Ford). On a Saturday afternoon, every single month, this most amazing delicatessen, community store and coffee shop invites you to enjoy home-baked scones and cakes, mouth-watering sandwiches, alongside a lovely selection of teas, all served in vintage china cups, saucers and plates – also available to hire for your very own parties! I have been lucky enough to experience the owner’s - Sarah Guilder - catering first hand and her party food is to die for. 8
And if you still fancy some food after all that, then I would recommend Enoteca (5 Bedford Place, Southampton) – which literally translates into a small restaurant focused on quality wine and food. This extremely friendly place is ideal for people that love to order share many dishes with their companions – as in “Italian Tapas”. It’s a fun, affordable and extremely successful idea. No pretention. Just good, fresh, home-cooked food. That’s probably why Enoteca is now Number 1 on TripAdvisor for restaurants in Southampton. And considering that you only opened up in January, I need to seriously congratulate you both, Neil and Laura Moodley for a job well done! I shall be back soon …

Recip
CHOCOLATE & ORANGE BATTENBURG CAKE Makes 2 cakes (each serving 8) Ready in: 1 hour 10 minutes plus cooking time 225g self-raising flour 1tsp baking powder 225g caster sugar 225g butter, softened 4 medium eggs, beaten 2tsp finely grated orange zest
1tbsp orange juice 1tbsp cocoa powder blended with 1tbsp hot water 4tbsp apricot jam, warmed and sieved 450g marzipan
1. Preheat the oven to 180C, 160C fan, Gas 4. Sift the flour and baking powder into a large bowl and add the sugar, butter and eggs. Beat with an electric mixer until the mixture is pale, smooth and creamy. 2. Divide the mixture equally between 2 bowls and fold the orange rind and juice into one bowl and the blended cocoa powder into the other.
SWEET POTATO & CHICK PEA CURRY Serves 4 • Ready in: 45 minutes 1-2 tbsp vegetable oil 2 garlic cloves 3cm piece fresh root ginger 1 large onion 1 aubergine 2 tsp ground cumin 1 tsp ground turmeric 2 tsp ground coriander
½ tsp hot chilli powder 3 medium sweet potatoes 500g carton passata 400g can chick peas 1 tsp garam masala Salt and ground black pepper Freshly chopped coriander
1. Heat the oil in a large deep frying pan and fry the garlic, ginger and onion over a medium heat for about 5 minutes until light golden. Stir in the aubergine and fry for a further 2 minutes. 2. Add all the spices to the pan and cook, stirring, for 1 minute until fragrant. Stir in the sweet potatoes, the passata and 150ml water and bring to the boil. Reduce the heat to a simmer and cook, uncovered, for 15-20 minutes or until the sweet potato is tender and the sauce has thickened. 3. Stir in the chick peas and garam masala and season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Simmer for a further few minutes. Serve in warmed bowls garnished with chopped coriander. 10
3. Spoon each mixture into separate greased and baselined 18cm square shallow cake tins and level the surface. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes until the cakes are risen and just firm to the touch. Cool for 5 minutes then turn out onto a wire rack to cool completely. 4. Trim the edges from each cake then cut each cake into four even-sized strips. Using a little of the jam, sandwich 2 of the chocolate strips with 2 of the orange flavoured strips to create a chequered effect oblong cake. 5. Roll out half the marzipan on a surface dusted lightly with icing sugar to an 18 x 30cm rectangle. Brush the top of the assembled cake with a little more jam and press onto the marzipan. Brush the remaining sides of the cake with jam and carefully wrap the marzipan all around the cake. Use your fingertips to crimp along the top edges of the cake. Repeat with the remaining cake strips and marzipan to make a second cake.

Mark Franklin talks to
JIMMY OSMOND The Breeze recently welcomed legendary Jimmy Osmond as guest presenter throughout the month of September. Mark Franklin spoke to him about fifty years in show business, touring and being a radio presenter.
Do you enjoy doing the show on The Breeze?
I love it. I’ve always grown up being on the other end of the microphone so being able to do a radio show, especially in the UK, is something that I always wanted to do.
You’ve had such a staggering career – and you’re celebrating your fifty year anniversary by releasing a new album and touring in the UK as well!
Yeah, who would have thought that - fifty years ago when I was just a three-year old boy, performing with my brothers. I thought every kid did what I did! I never thought I’d end up owning Andy’s (Williams) Theatre and being empowered by him and his family to continue to celebrate his award winning music. We have 27 dates in the UK following our Las Vegas run and it’s just so fun to be a part of this show. It’s not about me, it’s about remembering his amazing music. Andy touched so many people’s lives with his songs, videos and TV series. I have some special guests – Charlie Green from Britain’s Got Talent, Emily Penny, surprises and the Moon River Band. You mentioned Britain’s Got Talent. So staying on the reality TV theme, of course Donny (Osmond) won the US version of Strictly a few years back. Would you do our version if someone said to you “come and have a go”?
Well I don’t know. I’m always up for anything – from cooking to the jungle and now a presenter on The Breeze - so who knows what’s in the pipeline. I’m just honoured and grateful to be asked to do 12
these projects. One thing that is so special for me, and the reason why I love the UK so much, is that I’m not just a guy that ‘was in that band that recorded that song’. You guys have allowed me to do these unique things as an individual which has been so much fun. And you can hear that in your voice when you’re presenting the show. Your anecdotes and passion for the music (yours and others) really shines through.
Well I kind of grew up in a different way. It was this old Hollywood kind of training ground where we had these mentors who we knew as just average, regular guys who became legendary entertainers. We would be on their variety shows, they would be on our variety shows and to be able to talk about some of these artists (I hope it doesn’t sound like I’m bragging) I have some really unique stories as I got to know these people as ‘everyday people’ and work alongside them. Their songs, their music and those memories together have really been a really special tapestry of experiences for me.

WHAT BENEFITS AND CONCESSIONS ARE YOU ENTITLED TO IN LATER LIFE? As you grow older, you’re entitled to age-related public benefits and concessions to help with day-to-day living. There may be local authority concessions available such as adult education or fitness classes. The most obvious is the state retirement pension, but what are the other less well-known top-ups and concessions available? Pension credit Although pension credit is a well-established benefit, not everyone realises they can claim it, so check if you’re missing out on this valuable supplement to your state pension. There are two elements to pension credit – Guarantee Credit which guarantees a minimum income of £155.60 if you’re single, and £237.55 for couples. The second element, Savings Credit, is for people who 16
have saved a small amount towards their retirement. Single people and couples By Ann Haldon could receive up to £13.07 and £14.75 of Savings Credit per week respectively. You may be entitled to one or both elements if you’ve reached state pension age, and are on a low income. For help to make a claim call 0800 731 7898 Attendance Allowance This is available to people aged 65 or older, who have care needs at home. You don’t have to receive professional care to be eligible; a care-provider is often a spouse or family member. The weekly rates depend on the level of care needed: • Lower rate: £55.10
• Higher rate: £82.30 è
17
Claimants of the lower rate often need help with washing and dressing, while the higher rate reflects greater care needs during the day and night. Carer’s Allowance If you care for someone for 35 hours a week or more, and they are in receipt of certain benefits, you could get Carer’s Allowance of £62.10 per week. If eligible, you automatically receive National Insurance credits. Carer’s Allowance can affect other benefits that you and the person you are caring for receive, so factor in the possibility of these being reduced or taken away. Carer’s Allowance support team 0843 504 7223 Winter fuel allowance To qualify for the payment this year of between £100 and £300 to help you with your winter heating bills, you must be born before 5th May 1953. If successful, payments are automatically paid between November and December in future years. Claimline 03459 15 15 15
TV licence Anyone over 75 qualifies for a free TV licence. The government offers concessions to older people in residential care reducing the cost to £7.50. Public transport Men and women are entitled to a bus pass at the female state pension age, giving free off-peak travel on local buses. Prescriptions Over 60s are entitled to free prescriptions and NHS sight tests. You should tell the pharmacist you’re eligible and complete the back of your prescription (they may ask for proof of age). Need Advice? Call Age UK Advice free on 0800 169 2081 Visit www.gov.uk

Gardening
TOOLS OF THE TRADE With the arrival of autumn, there is plenty of maintenance work needed in the garden. Using the right equipment will ensure that jobs are completed as easily and quickly as possible. It really is worth buying as good a quality garden tool as you can afford. Poorly made and badly designed tools can work out a lot more expensive (and frustrating!) in the long run, so start with a few good ones and build up gradually. A good quality fork and spade are essential and they need to be sturdily built. The neck and head 20
of the spade should be By Pippa Greenwood moulded from one piece of metal for added strength. The shaft is usually constructed from wood or metal and you should make sure that it is firmly attached at both the head end and the handle. Ensure the metal parts have been treated to prevent rust. A hand fork and trowel are essential for smaller jobs such as weeding or gardening in confined spaces, and they are also great for moving and dividing smaller plants, for planting bulbs and for mixing up small amounts of compost. It is definitely worth feeling the handle to ensure that that the grip is comfortable. Next decision: stainless steel or coated steel? Stainless steel does not rust and many people find they move through the soil better, but they are pricey. Coated steel tools are much cheaper and provided you keep them clean and oil them periodically and at the end of each season, they last well. è

You will need a hoe for weeding between small plants and for aerating the surface of the soil. Sharpen your hoe regularly and it will last for ages and slide rapidly and easily through the soil. Most hoes have a 1.5 metre (5 foot) shaft but if you are very tall, then longer ones are available from some manufacturers. My favourite is the SpeedHoe, UK designed and with an unusual almost heart-shaped head with a blade running around all edges and a pronged rear, making it the easiest and most effective hoe I’ve ever used. A spring-tined rake is really useful because it has thin flexible wire tines which make it perfect for raking up lightweight debris and fallen leaves or, of course, lawnmower clippings. Although a garden rake can also be used to rake up
leaves, its main purpose is to break up lumps of soil and help you to create a fine level area for sowing seed, whilst at the same time removing stones, lumps and other debris. If you plan to grow vegetables, then a small hoe known as an onion hoe is an invaluable tool and allows you weed between fairly closely spaced crops. For really tight spaces and weeding between paving, I’m addicted to my SpeedWeeder, a small red-handled tool l which is the best I have used for hoiking out dandelion roots in one piece too! Finally, if the tools carry a guarantee then make sure that you keep the receipt and any relevant label from the tool itself or else it may well be difficult to prove precisely when and where you bought it.

The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. Group Managing Director Marcus McGee believes that Which? have endorsed Cloudy2Clear’s long standing company

But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service the Eastleigh area
and manager Justin Friel agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Justin a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be

THE BUCKET OF DAMSONS
By Jackie Brewster
The presence of a muddy bike abandoned on the grass verge made Marion suspect that the creature perched high in the branches of her damson tree was no bird. “You’d better not be scrumping,” Marion said, wrapping her pashmina tightly around her shoulders, “I’ll be having a word with your mother.” “You don’t know her.” A girl, no older than twelve, peered down through the foliage. She’d come prepared. A large bucket swung from her juice-stained hand. “You’re trespassing,” Marion said with annoyance. “That tree borders my property. All the fruit belongs to me.” “You can’t own a tree,” the girl said, “it’s a living thing.” “What utter nonsense,” Marion said crossly. “Of course you can.” The girl looked dubious. “Last year all the plums just fell into the lane and got ruined,” the girl said. “That’s a waste, and we’re taught not to waste food.” Marion felt a twinge of guilt. Last year she had intended to pick the damsons, but it meant getting the step ladder out of the garage and she’d never got round to it. “They’re not plums,” she said firmly, “they’re damsons.” “They taste like plums,” the girl replied tartly. “So you’ve been eating them as well?” Marion asked. “Just the one,” the girl grinned. “It was juicy.” “Why don’t you climb down with your bucket?” Marion said cunningly, “And I will take my share from what you’ve picked. The rest you can keep as a picker’s fee.” The girl considered this for a moment. 32
“How about,” she replied, “I take my share from the bucket and you get what’s left instead?” “Certainly not,” said Marion. This child really had some cheek. “Don’t forget those are my damsons and you are a thief.” “If you cared about them you’d have picked them already,” the girl said. “I’m the one who’s taken all the risks.” “But you didn’t ask permission,” Marion said, outraged. There was a steely look in the girl’s eye. Then she smiled. “How about we play a game?” she said. “I tip this bucket and whatever you catch you keep, and whatever falls on the ground I keep.” “But I’ve got nothing to catch them in,” Marion said, annoyed. She didn’t much like games. “Then nip into your house for a bowl.” The girl smiled sweetly. “As big as you like.” “I don’t trust you,” Marion said, “the minute I’m gone you’ll be off with the lot.” The girl looked offended. “Brownie’s honour I would not,” she said. “Alright then, why not catch them in your scarf?” “It’s not a scarf, it’s a pashmina,” Marion said, then realised what a good idea that was. The girl clearly wasn’t aware just how big her pashmina was. If she held it taut she could catch every damson, and the annoying child would end up with none at all. “Alright then,” Marion agreed, “you’ve got yourself a deal.” She unfolded the length of fabric. “Not fair!” the girl cried. “It’s massive.” “You can’t back out now,” Marion said, pleased that the balance of power had been redressed. “Alright,” the girl conceded reluctantly, “get ready then.” Marion squinted up into the branches of the tree with the pashmina outstretched like a fireman’s net. The girl wedged herself against a branch and held up the bucket. Slowly it began to tip. Marion braced herself. Frist there was a strange rattling sound, then a slurry of wet damson stones rained down upon her. “You know how I said I’d only eaten one?” the girl laughed, swinging nimbly down with her empty bucket. “Well, I might have been lying.”

What is a Dental Implant? a dental implant is an artificial replacement for a tooth root, usually made from titanium. there are many different implant systems available and when competently used they all deliver a highly reliable form of treatment. the main aim during the placement of any implant is to achieve immediate close contact with the surrounding bone. over time further growth of bone onto the implant surface enhances the stability of the implant. Frequently AskeD questIons Will I be able to eat what I like afterwards? Once completed, patients should be able to eat a normal, healthy diet with little or no difficulty. What Costs are involved in implant treatment? The cost can vary, depending on the degree and extent of treatment required. The full cost is therefore explained and confirmed in a written treatment plan from your implant dentist.
How long will it take? Implant treatment usually requires a number of appointments over a period of months. In some cases, however, implant work can be completed in a much shorter period. How long will it last? Once treatment s completed a regular routine of dental hygiene and regular check-ups should ensure that implants last for many years. Am I too old for implant treatment? There is no upper age limit for patients to undergo implant treatment, provided they continue to enjoy reasonably good health. Is the treatment painful? Patients are often surprised at how little discomfort they experience during and after implant procedures.

You can’t claim the total cost of the holiday, but you can ask to be reimbursed for the extra travel costs, plus a fair sum for the change to your holiday. Start by writing an email or letter to the tour operator’s customer services department; quoting a booking reference number, explain your grievance and specify the amount of compensation you’d like. Include the details of when you tried to contact your tour operator while you were away, and copies of taxi or car hire receipts. HAVE WE BECOME THE STUFF OF CLASSIC COMEDY?
By Kate McLelland
If you belong to the Baby Boomer generation (born between 1946 and 1964) you’ve probably noticed that the programmes you watched on TV when you were young are now available everywhere, with episodes on YouTube and repeats on mainstream television – not to mention the opportunity to binge on box sets.
The Art of Grumpiness Since the character of Victor Meldrew appeared in One Foot in the Grave, we’ve turned being grumpy into an art form, with Grumpy Old Women theatre tours, Grumpy Old Men birthday cards and “grumpy” celebrities like Lord Alan Sugar.
But there is a downside: gone are the days when we could watch as young people, laughing at the follies of the old. This time around we are more likely to see a reflection of ourselves. Walk into any party where Baby Boomers are gathered together, and you’ll recognise some familiar types:
Envy Thy Neighbour
40
As you enter the party it won’t be hard to find a present-day Victor Meldrew. Follow the loudest voice in the room to overhear a blow-byblow account of his latest victory over “faceless bureaucracy”.
The one-upmanship demonstrated by Hyacinth Bucket in Keeping Up Appearances is far from dead. Last year in a survey of 1,016 UK adults, 13% said they envied a neighbour’s home, while 80% were prepared to spend £100+ on home accessories to impress the people next door. è
Today’s Hyacinth is likely to be the hostess of the party, standing in her perfectly-planned kitchen, surrounded by every conceivable gadget. The canapés may have been delivered by Waitrose, but you can bet the wine came from the budget supermarket across town. Love thy Landlord We all loved to hate Rupert Rigsby in Rising Damp. Rigsby was the penny-pinching, vain, boastful and cowardly landlord who lorded it over a household of seedy bedsits. Of the two million buy-to-let landlords in the UK, many are Baby Boomers who have invested in property to supplement their pensions. Most are, of course, model landlords: but as the wine flows more freely, don’t be surprised if you overhear some less than scrupulous Boomers swapping tips about how to disguise a damp patch. Perhaps that’s why we’ve seen an almost twentyfold rise in tenants’ complaints between 2007 and 2015… Good for the planet Of course, not all of us have become grumpy, envious
or dishonest in our old age. Some have learned to respect the environment and live sustainably. These are the guests who - like Tom and Barbara from The Good Life - arrive late via public transport, proffering a box of freshly-laid eggs. They love nothing better than to air their views on ‘green’ topics and you’ll enjoy chatting to these people, until they point out that your lifestyle is destroying the planet. Research suggests that we tend to grow more eccentric with age. “ Younger people modify their behaviour to social norms,” says Peter Tyrer, a professor from Imperial College London. “But as people get older, there is evidence of reduced plasticity of the nervous system.” In simple terms, that means we become more set in our ways and cease to care what others think. Perhaps it’s not all bad. We feel affection for TV’s classic comedy creations precisely because of their unique and quirky character traits. Let’s hope that as we age, people will learn to love us in the same way.

MICROCHIPPING YOUR DOG New legislation to have your dog microchipped is aimed to relieve the pressure on local authorities and animal welfare charities to care for lost dogs.
By Ann Haldon
Microchipping your dog will make it easier for you to be reunited should they be lost or stolen, as your contact details are placed on an approved database.
How does microchipping work? A tiny electronic chip is implanted under your dog’s skin, between the shoulder blades. It contains a unique number which correlates with your up to date contact details. You receive an activation card with an ID number and a phone number to call to update your contact details or you can go online www.petchipregistry.co.uk. Microchipping doesn’t hurt your dog, and no anaesthetic is needed. It can be carried out by a vet, in pet retail outlets, re-homing centres, or via charity organisations such as Dogs Trust who carry out the procedure free of charge. The law applies to dogs over 8 weeks. Non-compliance means a fine of £500, and potentially criminal prosecution. You’ll receive a warning notice giving you 21 days in which to comply. Dog wardens and other enforcers including community support officers have the right to seize your dog, have it microchipped and reclaim the cost from you later. 44

AFFORDABLE CREATIVE SPACES AVAILABLE ‘A Space’ Arts now have a number of subsidised studio spaces available across Eastleigh and Southampton. Tower House is a 700 year old building containing dry studios with desk space available for screenbased practitioners. They are perfect for graphic/ web designers, or those working in the cultural industries.
Read more about the spaces through the website: www.aspacearts.org.uk/projects or contact Ria at ria@aspacearts.org.uk or on 02380 338778 to arrange a viewing or to ask any questions. The deadline for applications is 30th October.

AUTUMN ACTIVITIES It can be difficult to entertain children in the winter months. If you’re stuck for something to do this weekend, maybe we can help… Head outside Getting kids out for some fresh air isn’t always an easy task, particularly when the weather is miserable. If the promise of puddle jumping isn’t 48
doing the trick, these ideas might tempt them into their coats and hats: • Cut a strip of sticky-backed plastic and secure it around your child’s wrist, sticky side out. Help them collect leaves to stick on to make an autumnal bracelet. • Collect autumn leaves to make a woodland picture when you get home. Use the leaves for the body of a hedgehog, owl or Gruffalo. • If you’d rather not stray too far from the house, why not set up a treasure hunt in the garden, with a pirate map and clues to follow? For treasure you could hide some chocolate coins or a small gift. Geocaching is popular with children and adults alike. You use a smartphone to find a ‘cache’ using its GPS coordinates. There are more than 70,000 hidden across the UK and popular walks can have several caches on route. Caches are usually small containers containing a logbook to sign and sometimes a small trinket, which you can swap with something of your own. You’ll need to download an app for your smartphone and visit www.geocaching.com to plan your route. Pokemon Go was a hit in the summer, and there’s nothing stopping you giving it a go now that it’s colder. If you haven’t heard of it, it’s basically a
smartphone app that gets users to search for and collect digital cartoon characters. They can be anywhere, so it’s a good way to encourage the kids to head into town with you. Get crafty Ah - the hours of fun that can be had with an empty washing up bottle and some sticky-backed plastic. The best craft activities result in something you can use again. (Children tend to get a bit annoyed when their masterpieces end up in the recycling box.) You could: • Make skittles out of empty plastic bottles. Decorate them with coloured tape or mix acrylic paint with PVA glue and paint them. • Design a T-shirt, using tie-dye or fabric pens. • Order some cyanotype paper (also called nature print or sun paper). It acts a bit like photographic paper, but develops in sunlight. Areas not covered turn blue. Place beads, leaves, feathers etc. on the paper and put it in the sun to develop. • Cover a box with photos cut out from a magazine, to keep hair slides, pencils or knickknacks tidy.
If film is more your thing, many of the larger cinemas offer discounted tickets for family showings. Odeon Kids shows, for example, are £2.50 or less per ticket. Why not let the kids entertain the adults with a puppet show? You could make puppets, although we love the Bead Bazaar Storybook and Finger Puppets set, £15.99, and the Oskar&Ellen Doorway Theatre, £61.99.

Fair Oak and Horton Heath will have its own parish office, at the former White Tree Farm, for the first time in history. It will locate the parish team in a more central spot, making it easier for residents to access services and will enable staff to store and care for equipment in a more efficient manner. Temporary closure of the White Tree car park will take place during the building of the facilities but the Park-and-Stride facility will remain available from other locations including the car park in Knowle Lane on the far side Knowle Park. An excellent, newly created footway across the park will mean children and parents can still make their way safely to school, whilst enjoying the benefits of fresh air and the wonderful parkland on offer at this local jewel. EASTLEIGH HERO SCOOPS PARALYMPIC GOLD David Smith, who was born, raised and educated in Eastleigh and already a Freeman of the Borough for his sporting achievement has built on his Gold in Beijing and Silver in London with GB’s first Boccia medal in Rio. David, who dominated the final, said, “I had lots of chances and didn’t take as many as I would have wanted. It could have been a hatful but it wasn’t. At least I won the game and proved I can beat anyone in the world.” Mayor of Eastleigh, Cllr Des Scott adds, “We were all cheering David and the team on. To win another Paralympic gold is a tremendous achievement and I, on behalf of all the residents of Eastleigh, congratulate David on his superb gold medal victory.” Well done, David!
