Editor’s Letter
CAMPING IN COMFORT This editor’s letter is usually written by Melanie but this time you’ll notice a change of picture and name. A reshuffle in the production team means that Mel is managing some of our other magazines and I’m now managing Eastleigh. You won’t notice much difference other than someone with red hair rather than blonde hair in the picture! Before the arrival of our children 20 years ago, my husband and I used to have a small boat. Kevin would love to have another (boat that is, not child) but all the preparation and launching only to see the clouds roll in, puts me off. Still, we like the idea of being out for the day or a weekend and going to outdoor music events too, which often finds us in a field some distance from home. So, we pushed the boat out (ha!) and bought a second-hand campervan in January. Aside from the purchase price and the very reasonably
priced insurance, I figured that a root around the back of the kitchen cupboard for pots and pans and my spend would be done. Hmm, wrong. The speedo wasn’t working; we knew that when we bought it. Then it needed a service and a cambelt change, and some welding underneath. And some hoses for drainage from the sink had split. We weren’t planning a ‘proper’ holiday this summer, which is just as well really. Still, once the necessary but boring stuff was out the way, I took myself down to Viscount Caravans in West End (see page 12). I needed a top up of my Calor Gas bottle anyway, but they have a fantastic accessories shop with every gadget you could imagine. I had been browsing on various internet sites before I went but I was delighted to find that Viscount’s prices were consistently lower than those online. Even this early in the season, we’re loving the whole outdoor life. As well as the accessories, Viscount have a fantastic range of caravans and campervans (wish I’d gone there when I bought!) if you fancy making the most of summer 2017.

Gardening
flower power You can inexpensively and easily grow a huge range of flowers from seed at home. Just about every perennial flower is available to grow from seed, and once they have reached flowering size they’ll just keep on performing! There are lots to choose from, including lupins, silene, Echinaceae, geranium, perennial poppies, delphiniums, gaillardia, hollyhocks, rudbeckia and salvia. Pay a visit to your local garden centre or use a seed catalogue and start planning; you could save a fortune, and all from a packet or two of seed. To start, you need containers to sow the seed into – I like to use half-sized seed trays, RootTrainers or smaller individual cells – and some good quality compost and your chosen seeds. It helps if you have something to tamp down the compost too, plus labels, a permanent marker, a dibber and some vermiculite (for covering seeds that need some light to germinate well). Sieve compost through a compost sieve to remove 8
the larger lumps, leaving fine compost perfect for seed sowing. If you sieve it straight into the pots, cells or trays, make sure you collect up any that falls on the surface below. Once the compost is in the tray or pot, firm it down so that there are no large gaps beneath the surface, and level it off to make it easier to sow the seeds evenly and at the same depth. You can make your own tamper using a piece of wood with a small block of wood nailed to it to make a ‘handle’. It is easier to look after seedlings if the seed has been sown in straight rows; make the rows using a plastic plant label. Check the packets for the correct depths for the seeds, and if you are sowing seeds in small cells then it is easier to make the holes using a dibber (or a pencil if you don’t have one). RootTrainers are ideal for larger seeds such as sunflowers. Don’t sow too densely or the seedlings will need more thinning out and will be more likely to become drawn, leggy and weak. Once in place, just cover the seed with compost. If you are sowing larger seed into cells, just pop the seeds in to the prepared holes and cover to the
required depth.
Finally, label your seed trays clearly, ideally with a permanent marker. Many perennials need heat for Next, use a watering can with the rose attached the seed to germinate reliably. Put the trays, pots and water thoroughly. If the seed sown was quite or cells into a propagator, standing each on moist small, it is best to stand the tray in a shallow tray capillary matting. Once the or bowl of water, so the compost absorbs water seedlings appear, gradually from below – this way the seeds are less likely to be lower the temperature displaced. and then prick each one out into its own pot. Hockley Meadows Farm Appeal Supporters of the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust have raised £153,000 towards the purchase of Hockley Meadows Farm in Twyford. The Wildlife Trust plans to use the land to recreate the traditional wildlife-friendly farming methods that have shaped the Itchen Valley’s water meadows. As well as running a working wildlifefriendly farm, they’ll manage the surrounding floodplain meadows as a vital habitat for fantastic species like water vole, otter and the rare southern damselfly. • The 31 acre farm has been put up for sale by the farmer, as he is retiring. To ensure that the land is protected from future development or intensive farming, he has kindly offered to sell the farm to the Wildlife Trust at market value of £400,000.

• A generous gift in a Will from a Winchesterbased support met half the purchase price, with an additional £153,000 being donated to the Wildlife Trust in response to its appeal for help. • The farm’s central location makes it a key piece in the jigsaw of wildlife-friendly sites the Wildlife Trust manages in the Itchen Valley. • The artist’s impression is by local painter Dan Powell, and shows the kinds of wildlife that will benefit from our plans for the farm’s water meadows. The Life List
It’s All Right For Some! By Derek Thompson When faced with delayed pensions, jobs stolen by robots, and endless reality television (we were lucky with The Family in 1974!), you can see why the younger generation thinks that we’ve had the best of it. Even their technology has helped us to catch up on decades of our favourite radio and TV programmes. It wasn’t always that way though, as they sometimes need to be reminded. Here’s a list of conversation starters, with just a hint of exaggeration. Our childhood was so deprived... • At Christmas we each got an orange painted stone.
• The school dinners were leftovers - from the dinners at other schools. • We were told that the radio only worked at teatime. • We shared a toilet with the municipal baths. • We had a single pair of socks between three of us - a brown one and a blue one. • Our Father Christmas letter simply read: all donations gratefully received. • We made all our own decorations out of last year’s decorations. • We glued pencil shavings together to make a new pencil. • It was a treat to be sat outside the pub with a lemonade. • As dad was a keen gardener, we had to follow the rag and bone horse until we’d collected a bagful. • We were only allowed to stay up late to watch programmes we couldn’t understand. • All the kids in class knew you’d redecorated by the cover on your exercise book. • Every child had to learn fractions to cope with mum’s Green Shield Stamps.

Motoring
NEW AUDI Q5 Replacing ultra-successful cars is never easy for a manufacturer, but that’s the challenge Audi has faced with the Q5, the brand’s best-selling SUV. Built at the manufacturer’s most advanced ‘smart factory’ in Mexico, the refreshed offroader is packed with clever technology, features revised engines and a fresh look that the maker hopes will continue to win over buyers. But has it done enough? Looks and image
The new Q5 may be a little less flashy than its Jaguar F-Pace rival, but that smart new octagonal nose, dramatic headlights and sharp body creases give it fantastic presence on the road. That’s helped by a wonderfully squat stance and perfect proportions. Inside the quality is clear. Solid, good quality materials are everywhere and the leather seats are comfortable and perfectly adjustable. There is plenty of space around the driver and logically placed controls for the multimedia system. 16
There’s also a three-zone climate control system, an optional Bang & Olufsen sound system, and the optional virtual cockpit, which replaces the dials with a 12.3-inch high resolution display.
Space and practicality
The new Q5 is bigger and wider than its predecessor – but still 90kg lighter. Inside there’s more headroom and rear knee-room, while boot space is up 10 litres. Two adults will sit comfortably in the back, but a large transmission tunnel seriously eats into rear legroom in the middle seat.
Safety systems are plentiful and buyers can opt for active lane assist, pre-sense assistance which helps detect if a crash is imminent and can apply the brakes for you, and cross-traffic assistance at the rear that will help when pulling out of parking spaces. In slow moving traffic it’s even partly autonomous, slowing down and speeding up in jams while keeping you in your lane.
What’s under the bonnet?
There are three engine options to pick from – but the best seller, and our pick of the bunch, is the 187bhp, 400Nm, 2.0-litre TDI, which will account
for 60 per cent of sales in the UK. This comes as standard with a clever new Quattro Ultra all-wheel drive system that can switch seamlessly between two and four-wheel drive automatically. Fuel economy is 56.5mpg with emissions of 132g/km, and it hits 60mph in 7.7 seconds and goes on to a top speed of 135mph. A 2.0-litre TFSI petrol option with 250bhp is also available. It’s capable of returning 40.9mpg and emits 157g/km. A feisty 3.0-litre V6 TDi completes the line-up, producing 284bhp and a stonking 620Nm of torque.
Behind the wheel
The new Q5 is quite simply brilliant to drive. We tested the car on a variety of terrain, from motorways to cities and beaches to dirt tracks; it took them all in its stride. On the road it’s quiet, refined and accomplished, while in the grit it was surefooted and secure.
The revised 2.0-litre diesel engine is punchy and works brilliantly when combined with the 7-speed S-tronic gearbox - overall it’s by far and away the best choice of transmission.
Verdict
Audi has moved the game on with its new Q5 but not ruined a recipe that has won it so many admirers. Stylish, comfortable and great to drive, it’s now packed with even more clever technology and features. With best in class performance and economy, and some highly tempting optional extras, we’d be very surprised if any of its rivals managed to usurp it at the top of the sales charts any time soon. ON TRACK FOR SUCCESS Hampshire’s brightest and best young athletes have been awarded County Council funding.
The scheme - Hampshire Talented Athletes Scheme (HTAS) - includes 181 sportsmen and women who aim to follow in the footsteps of some of the scheme’s former athletes, including Olympic and Paralympic gold medal winners. Councillor Andrew Gibson, said: “HTAS is a real success story. We were all inspired by the record medal haul of GB athletes at Rio, including five HTAS athletes who won eight medals”. “We know from speaking to the sportsmen and women how much of a difference the scheme made to their sporting careers. We’re delighted to support the next generation of talented athletes, including many aiming for glory at the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympics, and the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and Paralympics.”
HTAS is funded by the County Council and administered by the independent charity Energise
Me. All 181 athletes will have access to free training at leisure centres, whilst 105 of the athletes will receive grant funding worth a total of £35,200 for competition and travel costs.
Richard Millard, chairman of the Energise Me board, added: “The athletes are fantastic role models and encourage and inspire Hampshire’s schoolchildren to take part in physical activity and sport.” Two of Eastleigh brightest athletes pictured: Serena Vincent - record breaking shot putter Will Flynn - member of the England Physical Disability Cricket Team

Home Interiors
a home with character There’s more to interior style than eyecatching accessories. Consider introducing an appealing sense of charm and character with these interesting ideas. Is your home lacking in an indefinable something? Has it lost its period features? Would it benefit from some appealing detailing, the restoration of authenticity or some aids to functionality? Sometimes it is worth considering some more architectural alterations, which don’t necessarily have to cost a fortune. Here are a few suggestions. Improve your floors If you have original timber boards in good condition beneath your floor coverings, then sanding them back, staining and/or oiling them is a relatively straightforward procedure for a competent DIYer; alternatively, employ a professional. Boards in poor condition can be renovated to an extent, or consider replacing them with reclaimed boards that match the style of your home.
Homes built between the late 19th century and the middle of the 20th often feature colourful, patterned geometric or encaustic tiles, generally along the hallway and garden path. Even if they are discoloured or damaged they should be repairable, and with the right specialist the results will be dramatic. Think about mouldings From skirting to ceiling roses, door surrounds to dados, mouldings contribute enormously to the overall look of a home. Research carefully, to ensure they

correspond in scale and design to the age and style of your architecture. Modern replicas are often available, but sometimes going to a specialist is necessary and this is not cheap. Ease of alteration depends on your circumstances but this is definitely a project to bear in mind when considering renovation work. What about woodwork? In living rooms lacking storage, build across the recesses either side of the fireplace, with cupboards below and display shelving above. The same goes for alcove shelving elsewhere, window seats, wardrobes and other forms of built-in joinery. Consider these additions carefully, so that they complement your home in terms of scale and detailing. And, plan to remove and replace completely inappropriate built-in storage or seating when possible. Replacing poor quality or badly designed
interior doors with beautiful ones is a major enhancement. In a period home you might seek out reclaimed examples or find well-made reproductions; also, decide whether to paint them or, conversely, strip them. Panelling can enhance a room or hallway and comes in a wide variety of styles, from Jacobean to contemporary, and is relatively easy to fit.

Get the lighting right You can improve inadequate or imbalanced built in lighting or out of character fittings: either discreetly with minimal downlighters in the ceiling, simple wall lights or versatile LED strips - or go for full-on drama with huge, eye-catching chandeliers. All in the details Small details like cupboard knobs, door and window furniture, light switches, plug sockets and even the humble pull cord can all make a difference. Cheap plastic light switches can be swapped for upmarket ones which are lovely to look at and pleasant to touch. The same goes for door and window furniture: think, for example, how different your front door would look with a gorgeous, matching set of letterbox, bell and numbers.

Recipe
SERVES 8
RHUBARB and Almond tart
Ready in 1 hour 30 minutes plus chilling time
A delicious tart with a layer of tangy roasted rhubarb topped with a sweet almond frangipane. Serve warm or cold with crème fraiche or vanilla ice cream. • Flour, for dusting • 300g ready-made shortcrust pastry • 250g rhubarb, trimmed and chopped • 175g caster sugar • 3 tbsp orange juice • 150g unsalted butter, melted • 125g ground almonds • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract • 2 medium eggs, beaten • Icing sugar, for dusting 28
1. Preheat the oven to 200C/Fan 180C/Gas Mark 6. Lightly
dust a work surface with flour and roll out the pastry to about 3mm thickness. Use to line a 23cm loose-based fluted flan tin. Chill in the fridge for 30 minutes.
2. Meanwhile, place the rhubarb, 25g of the caster sugar and the orange juice in a shallow roasting tin. Roast in the preheated oven for about 20 minutes until just tender, turning once. Leave to cool.
3. Trim off the excess pastry from around the edge of the chilled
pastry case and prick the base all over with a fork. Line the case with baking paper and baking beans and bake blind for 10 minutes. Remove the beans and lining and bake for a further 5 minutes until pale golden.
4. Strain the rhubarb from the roasting juices and spoon into the pastry case. Beat together the melted butter, remaining caster sugar, ground almonds, vanilla extract and eggs in a bowl until smooth and creamy. Gently spread over the rhubarb.
5. Bake the tart for 30-35 minutes until the topping is golden and just set. Serve warm or cold dusted with icing sugar. See tip for serving suggestion.

I LOVE GIN. And apparently, I’m not the only one... Fetch the ice and tonic – the gin industry in the UK is indeed booming, with 49 distilleries opening in 2016 alone, and £400 million spent on buying gin bottles. The trend for small batch gin is still on the increase this year with new gin lists popping up in restaurants, pubs and bars all over the county, Winchester leading the way of course! But do you know which gin you actually prefer? And why? The Hampshire Wine School offers an education, in a fun and relaxed way at the Winchester Wessex Hotel, on how gin is created, and how to make THE perfect Gin & Tonic by comparing 5 styles of gin, 3 premium tonics and 5 types of botanicals. A real mouth-watering and eyeopening experience for £32.50pp. Do not miss out on Winchester’s forthcoming House of Gin Festival either, which is returning to Winchester GuildHall on Saturday 27th May, 5pm-10pm, in association with Winchester Distillery and East Imperial tonic and mixers. The Festival will have three Gin bars showcasing a wide selection of small batch and Award Winning Gins. Producers shall also run masterclasses on how their gin is distilled, offer tastings and an opportunity to purchase bottles at a discounted rate. Copperhead Gin, Nordes gin, Marylebone Gin, Liverpool Gin,

Nginiuos Gin, Brennen & Brown Gin, 6 o’clock Gin, Burleighs Gin and Elephant Gin to name a few will be presented on the day. Tickets on sale for £8.03 at EventBrite.co.uk. My favourite gin of the moment is Pinkster Gin, as it makes a refreshingly different G&T, with a delicate raspberry flavour appealing both to seasoned gin drinkers and recent converts. It even won ‘Overall Best Contemporary Gin’ at The Gin Guide Awards 2017! So, how about this wonderful ‘Je T’Aime’ pink cocktail for the one you love. … • 37.5ml Pinkster Gin
• 15ml Chambord liqueur (or raspberry equivalent) • 50ml Pineapple juice

Short Story
lost and found
By Jackie Brewster
“A gentleman’s come in with a lost and found card for the window.” Carly was new to the job at the village newsagent, and felt as though she was constantly interrupting poor Frances with questions. “What should I say to him?” “Is he wearing a flat cap covered in badges?” Frances looked up from a pile of invoices. “Yes,” Carly said. “It keeps slipping over his eyes.” “That’s Mr Pemrose.” Frances took off her glasses and pushed back her chair. “I’ll be right there.” The gentleman in question was stood at the counter holding a crisp white postcard. He smiled at the sight of Frances. “I’m intrigued to hear what you’ve found this week, Mr Pemrose,” she said warmly. “I’m glad you asked,” he winked. “I found a cloud of starlings over Kirk’s Farm that looked, for a moment, like the ribbon on a birthday present.” “How wonderful,” Frances said taking the card from him. “Carly would you mind putting this in the window so that passers-by can see it?” Greatly puzzled, Carly took the neatly written card, and squeezed herself between the crisp boxes and the window to reach the lost and found display. “I’m afraid there are no spaces left. Are there any old cards that could be taken down?” “I’m sure there’s a few,” Frances said. “What do you think Mr Pemrose, shall we make some space?” “Oh yes.” The man chuckled as the hat again slipped over his eyes. “Maybe the one about the full moon that rolled up Copper Hill can go?” “Perhaps,” Frances said, “but has that snowy field you found that looked like candyfloss now been returned to its rightful owner?” “I’m sure someone must have claimed it by now,” Mr Pemrose said, turning cheerfully to Carly. “Can you 36
find it, dear?” Carly pulled each card out of its slot and read the descriptions. There were lost cats and bus passes, found cats and bus passes, and every now and then she recognised Mr Pemrose’s neat handwriting. These found things were strange. He’d found a cherry tree in full bloom in February, a double rainbow over the moor and the song of a thrush at midnight. Who could possibly have lost these things she wondered. Finally, she found a fading card about a field of candyfloss. “Would you like the old card back?” she asked, slipping the new card into the vacant slot. “You keep it,” he said, adjusting his hat while opening the door. With a ring of its bell he left. Carly dusted down her jeans. “Well I don’t know what he’s found,” she said, “but I strongly suspect he’s lost his marbles.” “Mr Pemrose is perfectly sane,” Frances laughed. “But why does he do it?” Carly asked. “No one has lost a flock of starlings, because they don’t belong to anyone, so how can he say that he’s found one?” “Because a year ago Mr Pemrose saw a card posted in our window which said ‘LOST – MY SENSE OF WONDER’,” Frances said. “Ever since then he’s been trying to reunite them with it.” “Weren’t you concerned for the person who posted it?” Carly worried. “Oh, no,” Frances laughed, “the card didn’t originally say that; condensation had made the ink run.” “So what did it really say?” Carly asked. “I can’t remember,” Frances frowned. “A lost umbrella maybe; nothing to lose any sleep over.” “Does Mr Pemrose know?” Carly asked. “If he does it hasn’t stopped him,” Frances smiled. “Besides, everyone likes to read his cards. We all mislay our sense of wonder occasionally.”

Health
these boots (and bodies) are made for walking
by Alison Runham
May is National Walking Month. Yes; sadly, simple old walking needs promoting. Many of us walk far less than previous generations did, yet walking is great for our health and brings other benefits, too. The Health Benefits Walking as exercise shouldn’t be underrated. Regular walking is proven to reduce the risk of stroke, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, asthma, obesity and some cancers, and helps maintain musculoskeletal health. On average, walking 10,000 steps burns 400kcal a day. Walking can also lift your mood and reduce stress, anxiety and depression. Countryside walks also offer nature, tranquillity and fresh air.
While our skin and eyes do need protection from unhealthy UV exposure, some UV light is essential for good health. The UV light we absorb while walking can alleviate depression, help to regulate our body clock and stimulate Vitamin D production. Vitamin D boosts immunity, aids blood cell formation and helps us absorb calcium and phosphorous, necessary for healthy bones and teeth. The World Health Organisation says 5 to 15 minutes of casual sun exposure of hands, face and arms 2 to 3 times a week during summer is enough to keep vitamin D levels high. Other Benefits of Walking Accessibility: Walking can be done anytime, anywhere; as part of an everyday journey to school, 40
work or activities, or a special trip. You’re not obviously ‘exercising’, which may reduce any selfconsciousness.
Social: You can walk with a family member or friend, allowing you quality time together. You may meet other people while walking or choose to join a walking group or health walk (see links below). Environmental: Every time we walk to work, school, shops or activities instead of using transport, we reduce pollution and congestion, helping the environment and improving everyone’s health and safety - both now and in the future. Financial: Simple, level walks require no special clothes or equipment. It’s free exercise that can reduce travel costs, too.
Walking Dos and Don’ts DO wear comfortable, weather-appropriate clothes and footwear. Any comfy footwear and your usual clothes are fine for walking around streets or parks, but you’ll need proper walking boots if walking in rural or hilly areas and waterproofs for bad weather. In warmer weather, remember a sun hat and sunglasses (your eyes can be damaged by the sun’s UV rays just as your skin can). Apply sun cream before and during your walk.
DO be prepared and safe. Ensure you take a drink and a snack, especially on hot days and long or more rural walks. Know where you’re going and how long it will take (and consider telling someone). Know what weather to expect and don’t play music too loudly - be aware of what’s happening around you. DON’T ignore pain from footwear. Head back.
Blisters can quickly become agonising.
ARE YOUR
DON’T ignore weather warnings or advice from walking guides, whether written or human, and leave long or challenging hikes until you’re fitter and more experienced.

History
TIME FOR TEA By Catherine Rose Tea is enjoyed all over the world but the English adopted it as their own around four hundred years ago. Believed to have originated in Southern China, tea drinking dates back to around 3000 BC. However, it didn’t become popular in England until the 17th century, when it was made fashionable by King Charles II and his Portuguese wife Catherine de Braganza, who brought it over to the Royal court from her native country. Coffee houses had recently been established in London and the custom of tea drinking was quickly introduced. Samuel Pepys referred to it in his diary of 1660: ‘…I did send for a cup of tee (a China drink) of which I never had drank before’. The coffee houses also sold loose leaf tea so that women, who did not frequent them, could enjoy it at home. It soon became popular for wives to host tea parties and invite their friends. Tea was very much the privilege of the wealthy. It was expensive to import and seen as a valuable commodity, kept locked inside ornate caddies. Teapots, tea-cups and saucers were prized 46
possessions and there were many different designs produced during this time. Because it was so expensive, the tea smuggling trade flourished. In 1785, following pressure from tea merchants, the government slashed the high import tax on tea, making it much more affordable to the masses. Thus, tea drinking grew in popularity among the working classes, sparking a debate about whether tea was bad for the health, causing ‘idleness’ and ‘melancholy’ amongst other things. Eventually, alcohol came to be viewed as the far greater evil and working class people were then encouraged to become ‘teetotal’. The concept of afternoon tea is a peculiarly English tradition but tea served with food was only introduced in the mid-19th century by Anna Russell, the seventh Duchess of Bedford, to bridge the gap between lunch and dinner, which in those days was traditionally served quite late in the evening. Soon friends were joining her for ‘afternoon tea’ at her home in Woburn Abbey and, thanks to her frequent trips to London, the custom grew to become a fashionable social event amongst the upper classes. During the Victorian era, a wider selection of tea
began to be imported from Sri Lanka (Ceylon) and India. Tea rooms serving afternoon tea grew in popularity, especially among women, being one of the few places where they could meet without a chaperone. By the early 20th century, many establishments had expanded on the custom of a musician playing in the background and were holding tea dances in the afternoons. Today, tea has become an integral part of our daily routine and could be described as Britain’s national drink. Although invented in America in the early 20th century, the tea bag didn’t become popular in England until the 1970s, when it revolutionised our tea drinking habits and put fortune tellers who read tea leaves at the bottom of a cup into decline! Still considered a rather genteel English custom, today, sumptuous afternoon teas are served by many top hotels with a bewildering number of different tea blends on offer along with a ‘tea sommelier’ to help you choose. They are often booked up months ahead - a testament to tea’s enduring popularity.
