I’ve always really loved music. I can Melanie Tinson & Tania Houston remember spending my first savings on a radio/cassette player which I took everywhere with me. It cost me a small fortune in batteries and, as this was pre-headphone days, made me pretty unpopular with the neighbours. Although music took a bit of a backseat when my children were young, they are both at university now and I have revived my interest. I attend lots of concerts and music festivals throughout the summer and have joined a Meetup group for other music lovers (www.meetup.com/OMGOutdoor-Music-Group or Google “OMG Meetup”). With a few exceptions, I’m really not into the music I grew up with; I like modern music and current artists. I’m fit, healthy and reasonably slim, but one look at my face and you’d know I’m not exactly Radio 1’s target audience, meaning I sometimes feel out of place at live events. If I go to concerts, these are mostly in the dark and I can’t generally be seen. But if I go to a music festival during the day it’s a different matter. I was near the front at one the other week and I suddenly realised I was older than anyone else there by at least 25 years. ‘The kids’ should have been staring at me wondering which teenager I was accompanying. However they were far too interested in the act on stage, their friends and themselves to bother looking at me. Yes my backache might tell me I’m too old and I certainly can’t ‘do’ camping, but I’ve come to the conclusion that nobody else is bothered about your age or how you look. So next time you think ‘I’m too old’, ask yourself ‘who says?’ Get your dancing shoes on, pack some painkillers, and get on out there!

HOME & INTERIORS
Storage Solutions For Every Room By Katherine Sorrell Well-designed storage makes an enormous difference to our homes, so interiors expert Katherine Sorrell takes us through some room-by-room ideas. Our homes are full of stuff, and each room requires specific solutions. You could do this yourself, plotting on graph paper where doors, windows, radiators and other furnishings will go, making use of ‘dead’ spaces such as under stairs or sloping ceilings, the alcoves either side of a chimney breast or the space below a bay window. Alternatively, interior designers can create an overall ‘look’, but should understand space planning, while architects are suited to more extensive works that involve extensions or alterations, and can help to make the most of your space. Living Rooms Often the public face of a home, the living room is where you’ll show off treasured possessions whilst concealing less attractive items, so to cope with these twin demands build in storage that includes open shelving and/ or display niches as well as cupboards. A central chimney breast with alcoves either side is ideal for shelving above and 8
Form playroom storage, featuring Form Konnect 1x1 cubes, £10; Form floating shelves, from £5; and Form photo shelves, £10. All Form at B&Q, tel. 0333 014 3098; www.diy.com.
cupboards below, or run a long, low cupboard along one wall – perhaps incorporating a fireplace or TV in the centre – the top of which can serve as seating or display space. If two rooms have been knocked into one there may be space for shelving or cupboards over the central double doors, or in a small room it may be possible to fit shelving above or around the door or the windows. Halls Hallway storage is all about organisation – slimline furniture such as console tables or storage benches works well. For a variety of storage types, supplement coat hooks behind the door with shoe racks at the bottom, an umbrella hook, and a shelf at the top. Alternatively, it may be possible to build an under-stair cupboard, kitted out with hooks, shelves and racks. Bathrooms Custom-made floor and wall cabinets are ideal for storing toiletries and spare towels, keeping surfaces clear, while vanity units with shelves, drawers and cabinets can be built around sanitaryware to cover up pipe work. Alternatively, consider free-standing options such as dressers, cupboards and chests,
and wall-mounted pieces like shelves, racks and mirrored cupboards. Pipe runs can be hidden behind false walls of studwork and plasterboard, within which you can punch shallow shelves and cupboards. Do the same when building a shower wall and create niches in which to store shampoos and soaps. Bedrooms There are four ways to fit out a bedroom: use free-standing pieces that you can take with you when you move (but probably won’t be space efficient); find a carpenter or joiner to make a bespoke room; use a fittedfurniture specialist, whose ranges often feature ingenious storage solutions; or use inexpensive, off-the-shelf elements from DIY shops or storage specialists, and make it up yourself. It’s a question of working out what best suits you, your property and your pocket. Children’s Rooms Raised beds with storage underneath are great for storing clothes or toys. Drawers should be easy to open, but with stops that prevent them from sliding right out. Use large boxes, baskets or cupboards for bigger toys, and smaller containers for things like Lego, toy soldiers and paints.

RECIPE
Salmon and Broccoli Quiche Serves 6
Ready in 1 hour 30 minutes, plus chilling and cooling
A rich and creamy quiche packed full of succulent salmon flakes and broccoli. Serve warm or cold with a crisp green leaf salad. Ingredients: • 250g shortcrust pastry • 300g salmon fillets • 200g small broccoli florets • 4 large eggs • 250ml double cream • 100ml milk • Salt and freshly ground black pepper • 50g Cheddar cheese, finely grated
TIP Replace the salmon with flaked smoked mackerel for a change of flavour and add a handful of fresh chopped dill or parsley to the egg mixture. 12
1. Roll out the pastry on a lightly floured surface and use to line a 20cm loose-based flan tin (it should be at least 4cm deep). Trim off the excess pastry and prick the base all over with a fork. Chill in the fridge for 30 minutes.
2. Preheat the oven to 200C/180C fan/Gas 6. Place a baking sheet in the oven to heat up. Line the chilled pastry case with baking paper and baking beans. Place the flan tin on the baking sheet in the oven and bake blind for 15 minutes. Remove the paper and beans and bake for a further 5-6 minutes until the pastry is crisp and pale golden. Reduce the oven temperature to 190C/170C fan/Gas 5.
3. Meanwhile, place the salmon fillets in a deep frying pan and cover with water. Bring to the boil then simmer gently for 5-6 minutes until just cooked through. Remove with a slotted spoon and leave until cold. Roughly flake the salmon discarding any skin and bones. Steam the broccoli florets for 1-2 minutes until almost tender.
4. Place the flaked salmon and broccoli in the pastry case. Whisk the eggs in large jug then whisk in the double cream and milk. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper.
5. Gently pour the egg mixture over the filling then scatter over the grated cheese. Bake for 25-35 minutes or until the filling is set and golden brown. Serve warm or cold.

I Take It You Are Not A Fan Then? Ben Collins: Of course you know him. He’s was once in the white racing suit on Top Gear and latterly a stunt driver in James Bond films; he knows a thing or two about driving. So it came as no surprise when I learnt the former Stig is none-too-enamoured with the prospect of driverless cars on our roads. He laments that already the likes of lane-departure warning and collision avoidance systems are removing control from the driver and reducing them to “supervising passengers”. “The less of that the better” he says. “This stuff just makes people more prone to get their phones out and start texting.”

A good point. To date the majority of driverless cars have been tested at reasonably slow speed, on test tracks or with a capable human ready to take over if things go wrong (of which, in one well publicised coming together, the bus won). Ben raises a very significant point too: car electronics can go wrong. What happens when the sensors fail or get blocked by road dirt? If, and when, driverless cars are given the go ahead onto our roads (predications range from 10 years to never) they will be competing for road space with millions of existing “conventional” cars, all being driven by us drivers who will offer no special exemptions to the new kid on the block. I’m with Ben in wanting to keep humans in control, because those driverless cars will be, in effect, learner drivers with no L plates. By Iain Betson

MINI Countryman vs Skoda Yeti By James Baggott MINI Countryman
All MINIs have a distinctive and instantly recognisable look to them, and with the Countryman range, it carries this identifiable image into a stockier frame to give you more space and practicality. The stylish bodywork helps to make the Countryman a tantalising option in the CUV sector and with great additions and features to match, it’s difficult to see why you wouldn’t choose it. However, it has competition from Skoda’s Yeti, a CUV similar in size and price and both cars have their good elements. For starters, both models have had recent redesigns to create more space and alter their looks to be more modern and upto-date. It has to be said that the Countryman certainly looks better than the Yeti, with the distinguishing features of the
MINI range, such as the shape, the headlights and front grille, to make it truly stand out on the road. The size of both models also make them very practical, with the smaller Countryman offering 350 litres of space in the boot with the seats up, whilst the Yeti has only 66 litres more in a car 20cm longer and 10cm taller. This means you can get more for your money space-wise in the Countryman, especially as the range starts off cheaper than the Skoda. Customisability has also been a recent appeal of the MINI market, and with the Countryman this is no exception. With MINI’s design additions that can be fitted to the whole range, you can personalise your Countryman as much as you wish. Also you can fit satellite navigation, stereo system, leather trim and ‘Run-Flat’ tyres to your model; great options that can be added to any of the range. Good options aren’t as easy to come by on the Yeti, as the better choices to fit are only available further up the Yeti model range, whilst almost all are compatible with every Countryman model. To compete with the Yeti’s off-road capabilities in the Yeti
16
Outdoor and more expensive models, MINI offers the ‘All-4’ all-wheel drive system throughout the class. With a higher ride height and great grip on offer, the Countryman All-4 system will give you confidence both on and off road, with only a small premium on top of the two-wheel drive versions. The Yeti’s base model is fitted with a 1.2-litre TSI petrol engine producing 110hp, whilst the 1.6-litre in the One produces just 98hp. This doesn’t compromise much in speed with only a marginal difference in acceleration. Overall, with a wider variety of vehicle and equipment options, value for money and great 4x4 system, the MINI Countryman is the better option of the two, and with the great looking bodywork to encase you, why wouldn’t you want to drive it? The MINI Countryman is available from £17,105 for the One Countryman, with the top of the range 218hp John Cooper Works All-4 starting at £28,985. For more information on the Countryman or any other models in the MINI range, contact your nearest Inchcape MINI dealership.

INTERVIEW
LeAnn Rimes LeAnn Rimes first hit the charts in 1998 with ‘How Do I Live’ Since then, she has starred in the classic movie ‘Coyote Ugly’, won two Grammys, a dozen Billboard awards, two world music gongs and a roomful of country music awards! She’s back with a new single and album and The Breeze’s Robert Kenny caught up with her to talk hits, new music and whether you should mention a lady’s age.
Congratulations on the new single. It’s called ‘The Story’ and it’s one of those songs that just hooks you straight in. Your voice on the opening line just grabs you. Thank you. Yeah this song is so beautiful. It’s a love story but I think it’s also a story of selfacceptance and owning every bit of your story and your life and how we’re all connected, and one collective story. So I think all of us can relate to this in a number of ways. You can get to a point where you settle into yourself and own every piece of you – it’s really empowering! ‘How Do I Live Without You’ is number four on Billboard’s greatest songs of all time. That is absolutely amazing. You must be thrilled with that? It’s mind blowing actually. People really connected with that song in such a way that it became a part of everyone’s lives. There are weddings, funerals, whatever – it’s amazing what music can do. So I’m very grateful for that song and still enjoy singing it. And ‘Can’t Fight The Moonlight’ was number one in 11 countries. How are you going to top that?! There’s got to be something on this record that’ll do that! I do believe it’s possible – I really do! There are so many awards you’ve won. You’re the youngest ever Grammy award winner?
18
Yeah I was fourteen. That’s still there – that’s pretty crazy! And now you’re in your thirties. Can we mention that? Yeah you can totally talk about that. I’m 33. Quite a lot in music and even how we listen has changed in those eighteen or so years. Looking back, would you still take this career path? Would you change anything? I’m sure there are things that I would probably change but at the same time, I feel that everything that I’ve gone through has led me to this point, to be prepared for now. I’ve learned so much and I think you have to go through the ups and the downs to get to this point.
Robert Kenny presents the daytime show on The Breeze every weekday from 10am-3pm with the latest entertainment news and the chance to win up to a £1,000 every day with ‘All Or Nothing’. Find out more at the

Twenty 20 Art For Oakhaven 3 – 9 September More than 160 original pieces of art will go ‘under the hammer’ at St Barbe Museum & Gallery in Lymington this September to raise funds for Oakhaven Hospice. Now in its third year, and with around £10,000 raised by the previous two events, this is the first time that Twenty20 Art will exhibit at St Barbe Museum & Art Gallery in New Street. It is being sponsored by Rathbones Investment Management. Some famous painters, celebrities, local established artists and undiscovered artists have generously created pieces of 20x20cm artwork, and donated it for auction in aid of the Hospice. The 164 pieces of art include original paintings from John
Illsley from Dire Straits; Rosemary Welch, famous for her equestrian art; successful local artist Will Rochfort and a delightful pen and ink sketch from Enid Blyton’s illustrator, Mary How. All the paintings can be viewed in the Old School Gallery at St Barbe, which is free to enter, from 3 – 10 September (closed Sunday). There will then be a traditional auction of paintings numbered 1-21 at 7pm on Friday 9 September. Paintings numbered 22 – 164 will be included in the week-long Silent Auction. Oakhaven Hospice volunteers will be on-hand at St Barbe to show participants how to submit their bids. Bids on all the paintings can also be emailed to 2020bids@ oakhavenhospice.co.uk. All online bids should be received by 5pm

on Thursday 8 September. As an additional incentive to visit Twenty 20 Art at St Barbe, there will be a £5 envelope draw to win a large painting by award winning local artist Dave White. And also, make sure you look out for 200 mini wooden special ‘Oakhaven Palettes’ which will be around the local area, perhaps on a bench on the sea wall or maybe on the table in a coffee shop… like a mini treasure hunt! Anyone who finds one will gain free entry into the envelope draw.

STORY
The Bucket Of Damsons By Jackie Brewster The presence of a muddy bike abandoned on the grass verge made Marion suspect that the creature perched high in the branches of her damson tree was no bird. “You’d better not be scrumping,” Marion said, wrapping her pashmina tightly around her shoulders, “I’ll be having a word with your mother.” “You don’t know her.” A girl, no older than twelve, peered down through the foliage. She’d come prepared. A large bucket swung from her juice-stained hand. “You’re trespassing,” Marion said with annoyance. “That tree borders my property. All the fruit belongs to me.” “You can’t own a tree,” the girl said, “it’s a living thing.” “What utter nonsense,” Marion said crossly. “Of course you can.” The girl looked dubious. “Last year all the plums just fell into the lane and got ruined,” the girl said. “That’s a waste, and we’re taught not to waste food.” Marion felt a twinge of guilt. Last year she had intended to pick the damsons, but it meant getting the step ladder out of the garage and she’d never got round to it. “They’re not plums,” she said firmly, “they’re damsons.” “They taste like plums,” the girl replied tartly. “So you’ve been eating them as 24
well?” Marion asked. “Just the one,” the girl grinned. “It was juicy.” “Why don’t you climb down with your bucket?” Marion said cunningly, “And I will take my share from what you’ve picked. The rest you can keep as a picker’s fee.” The girl considered this for a moment. “How about,” she replied, “I take my share from the bucket and you get what’s left instead?” “Certainly not,” said Marion. This child really had some cheek. “Don’t forget those are my damsons and you are a thief.” “If you cared about them you’d have picked them already,” the girl said. “I’m the one who’s taken all the risks.” “But you didn’t ask permission,” Marion said, outraged. There was a steely look in the girl’s eye. Then she smiled. “How about we play a game?” she said. “I tip this bucket and whatever you catch you keep, and whatever falls on the ground I keep.” “But I’ve got nothing to catch them in,” Marion said, annoyed. She didn’t much like games. “Then nip into your house for a bowl.” The girl smiled sweetly. “As big as you like.” “I don’t trust you,” Marion said, “the minute I’m gone you’ll be off
with the lot.” The girl looked offended. “Brownie’s honour I would not,” she said. “Alright then, why not catch them in your scarf?” “It’s not a scarf, it’s a pashmina,” Marion said, then realised what a good idea that was. The girl clearly wasn’t aware just how big her pashmina was. If she held it taut she could catch every damson, and the annoying child would end up with none at all. “Alright then,” Marion agreed, “you’ve got yourself a deal.” She unfolded the length of fabric. “Not fair!” the girl cried. “It’s massive.” “You can’t back out now,” Marion said, pleased that the balance of power had been redressed. “Alright,” the girl conceded reluctantly, “get ready then.” Marion squinted up into the branches of the tree with the pashmina outstretched like a fireman’s net. The girl wedged herself against a branch and held up the bucket. Slowly it began to tip. Marion braced herself. Frist there was a strange rattling sound, then a slurry of wet damson stones rained down upon her. “You know how I said I’d only eaten one?” the girl laughed, swinging nimbly down with her empty bucket. “Well, I might have been lying.”

GARDENING
Plan Your Planting by Pippa Greenwood www.pippagreenwood.com
Many gardens are now looking a little tired, as summer flowers try hard to put on a reasonable show despite the tougher conditions and the fact that their season is drawing to a close.
26
It is not a good time for planting shrubs or trees, as the soil tends to be fairly dry, so you can’t even make things look better with a shrub or two. So, do what you can to perk up flower beds and borders and then start to plan ahead for spring - right now garden centres are starting to take delivery of huge quantities of fabulous bulbs, just ready for planting, and a sure fire way to get your garden looking fabulous in those first few months of next year, and indeed for years to come. Get down to the garden centre sooner rather than later, so that you can have the pick of the bunch.
so send off for a few of these to ensure you have something particularly special to enjoy - and to show off to your friends and neighbours! If ordering from catalogues you will need to get a move on, however, so send off for a few as soon as possible. Then enjoy putting your feet up with a cuppa and a pile of catalogues, ready to choose some delightful bulbs ready for planting in the next month or so.
Many bulbs will actually start to put down roots at the back end of summer and into autumn, giving them a head start and ensuring a fabulous display in spring, so prompt planting is advisable. The only thing you need to delay is the planting of tulips; these are best planted in October to help them avoid a nasty infection called tulip fire.
Before you set off to the garden centre, take a look at your borders - and indeed anywhere else in the garden - and decide where you can cram in a few bulbs. Remember, the great thing is they are often in flower before the rest of the garden gets going, and so they can be used to under-plant existing trees, shrubs and herbaceous flowers. Bulbs are an excellent way to make the most of every square metre of garden soil, and to ensure that your garden looks lovely as early as possible in the year.
Don’t forget that many mail order catalogues are available and these have an even bigger array of bulbs, often including many of the more unusual varieties,
Many bulbs do really well in containers, so if you have a permanently planted up container this too can be underplanted with several layers of
spring flowering bulbs. Use a transplanting trowel to plant in these tight spaces and that way you’ll minimise damage to the existing plants’ roots. If you are new to using bulbs and feel unsure of what goes together, don’t feel frightened to experiment. Alternatively, many catalogues and even some garden centres offer mixed selections of bulbs for specific purposes and there are also some lovely packs of bulbs following colour themes. These usually represent good value for money too. Have you got a dull patch of lawn? Brighten it up in the early months by planting some small bulbs. Things like crocus or miniature narcissus are particularly useful, as once the flowers have faded you don’t have too much deteriorating
foliage to cope with. In larger areas, consider planting up drifts of full-sized daffodils, but make sure that the grass beneath these trees or shrubs is not something you want to keep regularly mown, as you will have to wait for at least six weeks after flowering before you can safely remove the leaves of the daffodils. When choosing bulbs, always make sure they are in good condition before you buy. With a quick look through the packaging (bulbs are often hidden by large quantities of sawdust or wood shavings) you should be able to find the bulbs itself. Avoid any which are showing even the slightest signs of deterioration such as sunken brown spots, excessive softness or the presence of patches of bluish
mould on their surface. Larger bulbs generally seem to do better than smaller versions of the same variety so, if possible, choose really good sized plump ones. If you want to buy large quantities of the same variety, then it may be possible to buy a net of bulbs from your garden centre or direct from a mail order specialist nursery. Ideally bulbs should be planted promptly, but if this isn’t possible make sure that you keep them in a cool and well ventilated spot before planting, as this is essential to reduce the risk of them deteriorating. Next month I’ll be looking at novel ways to make the best use of the gorgeous array of available bulbs, so plant some now and then treat yourself to a few more for September planting!

The Woodlanders Burley VIllage Hall Exhibition Back in the summer of 1990 two Burley artists, Diana Hawkins and Suzan Houching, came up with the idea of putting on an exhibition of paintings, ceramics, woodcraft, pottery and jewellery. Seven friends were invited to join them and they called themselves The Woodlanders. Apart from two exhibitions at Highcliffe Castle they still considered Burley Village Hall their home.
